Punch Brothers, Watchhouse, and Sarah Jarosz join forces for the second American Acoustic US tour starting tonight, with dates in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, New Haven, and more. Chris Thile says: “It took five years, but I’m elated to announce the second traveling edition of American Acoustic for this summer. Joining my fellow Punch Brothers and me in front of a pair of large condenser microphones will be our dear friends, Watchhouse and Sarah Jarosz, for a collaborative evening of music that traverses our respective catalogues and celebrates being together.” They've released a preview of what's to come with a cover of Sufjan Stevens' "Mystery of Love" performed live from Telluride; you can watch it here.

Punch Brothers , Watchhouse, and Sarah Jarosz join forces for the second American Acoustic US tour starting tonight, with dates in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and New Haven, among others. The tour takes its name from a June 2016 residency at Washington, DC’s Kennedy Center, curated by Punch Brothers’ Chris Thile , that culminated in a show including his band and I’m With Her, with half the show devoted to extensive collaboration between all the musicians. The two bands then took American Acoustic on the road in 2017.

You can catch a preview of what's to come on tour with a video of Punch Brothers and Watchhouse performing Sufjan Stevens' "Mystery of Love" live from the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, Colorado:

Thile says: “It took five years, but I’m elated to announce the second traveling edition of American Acoustic for this summer. Joining my fellow Punch Brothers and me in front of a pair of large condenser microphones will be our dear friends, Watchhouse and Sarah Jarosz, for a collaborative evening of music that traverses our respective catalogues and celebrates being together.”

Watchhouse’s Andrew Marlin adds: “My absolute favorite thing to do is sit around and pick tunes with folks. So stoked to hit the road and do just that with some of the best to ever do it.”

Jarosz, who also is a member of I’m With Her, concurs: “I’m thrilled to embark on round two of American Acoustic. There’s nothing better than making music with your friends, and it will feel particularly joyous to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians after so long a part.”

Punch Brothers—guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, mandolinist/singer Chris Thile, and fiddler Gabe Witcher—formed in 2006 and released its first Nonesuch record,  Punch , in 2008. In 2009, the band began a residency at NYC’s intimate Lower East Side club The Living Room, trying out new songs and ultimately spawning Antifogmatic  (2010). Those albums were followed by the critically praised Who’s Feeling Young Now?  in 2012 and 2015’s T Bone Burnett-produced The Phosphorescent Blues . Their 2018 record, All Ashore , won a Grammy for Best Folk Album.  Hell on Church Street , released earlier this year, is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues .

Watchhouse are a duo founded by Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz. The group sings sweet soft songs about the hardest parts of our lives, both as people and as a people. Their career has been a grassroots success story. Over the course of a decade and six albums under the name Mandolin Orange, they went from coffee shop gigs and self-released records to millions of Spotify listeners, headlining sold-out shows at Red Rocks and the Ryman Auditorium, and gaining praise from Rolling Stone , the Washington Post , and NPR. Their most recent release was 2021's Watchhouse, which the band is supporting on tour throughout 2022.

Sarah Jarosz, already a four-time Grammy Award-winner and ten-time nominee at the age of thirty, is a Texas native who started singing as a young girl; she became an accomplished multi-instrumentalist by her early teens. After releasing her full-length debut Song Up in Her Head at eighteen years old, she went on to deliver such critically lauded albums as Follow Me Down , Build Me Up from Bones , and Undercurrent , in addition to joining forces with Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan to form I’m With Her. Jarosz’s fifth studio album, World on the Ground , produced by John Leventhal, won a Grammy award for Best Americana Album. In 2021, she released the Grammy-nominated Blue Heron Suite , a song cycle that she composed after receiving the FreshGrass Composition Commission. She will continue to tour in 2022 in support of both releases.

The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.

American Acoustic: Punch Brothers and Watchhouse featuring Sarah Jarosz

Sun / aug 7, 2022 - 7:30pm.

High-energy, sophisticated bluegrass from many of the best voices in Americana.

  • Punch Brothers
  • Sarah Jarosz

About this Performance

As at ease and beloved in Brooklyn as they are the American heartland, Punch Brothers—mandolinist Chris Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjoist Noam Pikelny, and violinist Gabe Witcher—have won a Grammy and accolades over a near-two-decade career. Their 2022 album Hell on Church Street has been praised as a return to their foundations, featuring adventurous songwriting and a tribute to bluegrass legend Tony Rice.

Across five studio albums as Mandolin Orange, multi-instrumentalist Andrew Marlin and fiddler Emily Frantz have won fans for their expertly crafted songwriting and gorgeous duet harmonies. “Watchhouse” is both the sixth album for the duo and a new name that reflects their evolution toward subtly experimental folk rock that might blend an Appalachian jam session with vintage Neil Young or even Radiohead.

With her captivating voice and richly detailed songwriting, Sarah Jarosz has emerged as one of the most compelling musicians of her generation. A four-time Grammy Award winner and ten-time nominee at the age of 30, the Texas native started singing as a young girl and became an accomplished multi-instrumentalist by her early teens. Jarosz brings songs from her award-winning World On The Ground and Blue Heron Suite albums to The Ford stage.

Programs, artists, dates, prices, and availability subject to change. Ticket limits may apply. All sales are final.

Cops locate alleged nikola jokic brother punch victim, continue investigation, nikola jokic's brother cops locate alleged punch victim ... continue investigation.

Cops are continuing to make headway in their investigation into Nikola Jokic 's brother ... telling TMZ Sports they've located the man who Strahinja Jokic punched in the face earlier this week.

A spokesperson for the Denver Police Dept. said on Thursday morning they've "been in communication" with the fan who Strahinja socked after Game 2 of the Lakers vs. Nuggets game at Ball Arena on Monday night.

The rep did not reveal, however, if the man is seeking to press charges -- or if he's formally filed a police report.

"At this point," the spokesperson said, "the investigation is still ongoing and no arrests have been made."

While currently in the clear with cops, Strahinja also appears to be safe from the crosshairs of the NBA for now.

The org. announced Tuesday it's looking into the situation , but it has yet to levy any sort of punishment on the Jokic bro ... clearing the way for him to potentially attend Game 3 of the L.A. vs. Denver series at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night.

For Nikola's part, the Nuggets superstar has not yet publicly commented on the matter.

Salt Lake Magazine

On July 28, the American Acoustic tour featuring the Punch Brothers , Watchhouse and Sarah Jarosz rolled on to the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre stage. There were so many highlights of the performance—and I wasn’t even that high (a bit punch drunk maybe).

When the entire ensemble took the stage for the opening number I knew we were in for something a little different. They kicked it off with “Little Birdie,” a well-known staple of American bluegrass and old-time music.

The Punch Brothers and Watchhouse exited stage right to allow Jarosz to showcase her talent. She did a solo acoustic rendition of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Her version really stripped down the Irish rockers’ song to its American roots. The cover was a magical moment and we were just getting started. Punch Brother Chris Thile then joined her with his mandolin for her 2016 song “Lost Dog.”  Yet another highlight!

From the opening number to the encore, the musicians played a solid three hours without a break. Their show felt like an amp-less relay race with great acoustic musicians passing the baton as they moved toward a collective victory. Talented players ebbed and flowed on stage all evening and played American roots music with Julliard precision. After Thile and Jarosz’ dueling mandolin session, the whole ensemble came back on stage for a joyous bluegrass version of the Beatles’ “Drive My Car.” Nathaniel Smith, a celebrated cellist who joined the Watchhouse crew for this tour, added haunting depth to the old song. Smith proved that the cello, a long ignored instrument in popular music, has a place alongside the fiddle, banjo, mandolin, upright bass or acoustic guitar.

Jarosz ended her set on the banjo playing the bluegrass classic “Little Satchel.” The Watchhouse crew joined her for the number and carried the baton for their leg of the show.

The harmonizing duo Emily Frantz (on fiddle) and Andrew Marlin (on mandolin or acoustic guitar) make up Watchhouse, formerly known as Mandolin Orange. On Thursday night they added cello and upright bass to the mix and launched into a beautiful version of their song “Echo.” The crowd cheered during “Gospel Shoes” and its prescient lyric “Freedom was a simple word so reverent and true/ Long time ago it meant the right to choose who you love and how you live, now it’s misused/ Twisted by the politics of men in gospel shoes.” They ended with the Punch Brothers joining them on stage for an extended jam of their 2019 track “Golden Embers.”

The Punch Brothers played nine songs before turning the stage into a collective jam session, filling the Amphitheatre with a collaborative energy. They gave “The Angel of Doubt” a hip-hop feel, inviting that genre into the American roots music family. When all the players took the stage for the Punch Brothers’ song “Rye Whiskey,” sister Frantz took lead vocal. With ego set aside, the team showed how individual talent flourishes under a collective umbrella.

The generosity and egalitarianism continued with a shared encore. The Watchhouse song “Wildfire” felt like the cherry on top of a magical night of acoustic music in a beautiful setting. The full crowd listened intently until the very end. Dave and the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre sound crew did a fabulous job. The Garden felt and sounded like a concert hall.

I hope these artists continue this American Acoustic tour next season and maybe add someone like Dom Flemons or Rhiannon Giddens to the mix. Their performance at Red Butte was a showcase of American roots music by a cadre of virtuosi.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
