The Travel Game I Can't Stop Playing

qwirkle travel game

I'm a big-time gamer of the pre-tech flavor. Games with physical components — cards, tiles, that sort of thing — are more interesting to me than moving pixels on a tiny screen. Especially when I travel. I sometimes forget to pack a bathing suit. I never forget a deck of cards and Bananagrams.

I have a new obsession: Qwirkle .

My husband and I were introduced to the game last New Year's by our always-fun neighbors on the version with big tiles , and I was thrilled to find a travel version , which I have since played in Venice, the Dolomites, New York City, and Asheville.

Qwirkle is a tile-based, rummy-style game for up to four players where the goal — insofar as board games can really have goals — is to make melds of six different shapes or colors. There's no formal board — just the flat surface in front of you at a table in your home, hotel lobby, airport lounge, or cute cafe.

The opening player lays out their best first move, and everyone then builds vertically and horizontally on what's been played. Sort of like Scrabble (without the board) or a crossword puzzles (with shapes and colors instead of numbers). Points are tallied for every turn, and the big score comes when someone makes a Qwirkle — six shapes or colors in a row. Because any good player will want to prevent their opponents from completing a Qwirkle, you play defense as well as offense. The game is at once simple and strategic, and therein lies the fun.

Another reason I love this game and have deemed it a new travel essential is that it's language-agnostic: You can play with strangers who don't speak the same language — as soon as you signal the rules in rudimentary gaming sign language. We learned this firsthand in Italy when three German couples who had watched us engaged in an intense game, approached to ask "vat ees ze gahm?" In non-existent German, we conveyed the rules, and they sat down for a match.

I've started packing an extra set to leave behind as a thank-you for hosts on my travels. I have yet to find anyone who doesn't love this game — young and old and everyone in between. It's a game for all ages, so expect to be beaten by your eight-year-old niece. Happy Qwirkling!

Description.

Qwirkle Travel provides you with all the fun of Qwirkle, in a travel-friendly package! The original Qwirkle came out in 2006 to great esteem. Susan McKinley Ross’s design went on to take home the Spiel des Jahres award. Previous winners of the SdJ include Azul, Ticket To Ride, Carcassonne and Kingdomino, to name a few. Qwirkle, placed among them, then, sits in high regard…

The aim of Qwirkle Travel remains the same as regular Qwirkle. There’s 108 wooden blocks. There’s six different shapes (square, circle, star, and so on), and each shape comes in six different colours. Each player starts with a secret hand of six blocks, which they draw blind from a bag. On your turn, you can play blocks from your hand into the communal layout. They have to be into the same row/column, and all must either be different colours, or different shapes (not both).

The layout sprawls over the game’s duration, much like a crossword, or a Scrabble board. And, like Scrabble, if you place blocks next to other blocks, you can score multiple rows and columns. You score points on a basis of how many blocks there are in the row/column(s) in which you placed. This can add up fast. (Especially if the blocks you placed contribute to multiple rows and columns due to handy adjacency!) If you place the sixth block in the row, you score 12 points, instead of six. At the end of your turn, you re-draw up to six block, picking from the bag.

Unlike Scrabble, there is no board. This is where Qwirkle works so well as a travel game. Instead of a drawstring bag, Qwirkle Travel comes with one made from durable material. It has a zip, which means that the packaging for the game is that bag, itself. No box needed! The bag is smaller than a toiletries bag, so it’s that perfect ‘grab it and go’ size. This makes it so convenient to slip into airport hand luggage, or, say, a bag for the beach. And since all you need is a flat(-ish) surface, you can play Qwirkle anywhere you want to travel!

What Makes Qwirkle A Great Travel Board Game?

We were introduced to Qwirkle some time ago as a filler game and we loved it. In fact, we loved it so much that our friends decided to gift us a traveler’s version of the larger game. Ever since then, Qwirkle has been our constant companion while the other travel board games get shuffled around.

We introduced the game to our toddlers and this game was a hit with them too. We did modify the rules though but that’s what we do with many of the travel games for toddlers.

While Qwirkle is largely because we love the game, we could also be a tiny bit biased when it comes to playing it because it was the first travel board game that we ever owned. Ours is a bit worn on the edges and for good reason. Thought I would take you through why it is so popular with us and our friends.

qwirkle rules

Either six tiles of different shapes of the same colour or six tiles of different colours of the same shape make a qwirkle.

Qwirkle comes with a multitude of tiles or cubes. It depends on the version of the game you own. I strongly suggest using the travellers pack when on the go. It is so much easier to carry. These tiles can have one of six shapes or one of six colours.

Qwirkle Rules

The Qwirkle rules are actually very simple. The objective of the game is to join either six different shapes of the same colour together or to join six different colours of the same shape together. Qwirkle does not come with a board. The board is technically built up by the tiles that are placed. Each tile in the row that is formed by a player garners the player a point.

A ‘Qwirkle’ occurs when a player forms a row of six tiles of different shapes (and the same colour) or a row of six tiles of different colours (and the same shape). The player then gets a bonus of six points.

What Age Group Is Qwirkle For?

Qwirkle is for children aged 6 and up. This is because the rules can get pretty complicated with the addition of scores for younger children. Another reason why this rule is in place for the travel version is because the pieces could cause choking hazards.

We have played the game with our toddlers but removed the component of adding scores. All they had to do was match the tiles which was a big hit. If you do this with the travel version makes sure to keep an eye on the kids because the pieces are small! We literally watched them like hawks. Lol

Pros Of Qwirkle As A Travel Board Game

One thing that I like to do when I consider picking up any board game for a journey is to evaluate the pros and cons of taking it. So, I decided to put my thoughts down when it came to Qwirkle.

SIMPLICITY: Qwirkle is a simple game to master. The concepts are easy to explain which means that it can be introduced to new players very easily. So, it doesn’t matter if you are travelling with experienced board gamers or novices or if you want to play with a person you just met on your backpacking trip.

Keeping kids entertained isn’t always an easy task. While I may not have kids of my own, I’ve been a nurse for long enough to know that. The one thing that I realized when playing board games is that not all games are suited for kids of all ages. This is largely because of the complexity of the rules. Qwirkle however is easy to grasp and its simplicity makes it a great game to play even with kids!

In fact, my three year old has begun to start trying to play the game. That is how simple it is!

WEIGHT: One of the greatest advantages that Qwirkle has over numerous board games is its weight. It is light, easy to carry and it even comes in a traveller’s edition which is the one that we own. Qwirkle can easily be carried in one’s purse and since it comes in a nice little ouch with tiles, one doesn’t have to worry much about it getting damaged.

STRATEGY AND LUCK: Qwirkle relies on both luck and strategy. Your luck varies a lot depending on the tiles that you pull out of the bag. Strategy is what makes the game interesting because luck will take you only so far.

Cons Of Qwirkle As A Travel Board Game

Not every game is perfect, and one has to realise that there will always be certain downsides to a game. Weighing the pros against the cons is what makes picking the right travel board game so much easier.

SMALL PIECES: While it is the small pieces that make the game light and portable, it does carry a rather glaring disadvantage when it comes to small children and choking. In which case one may choose to buy the edition with the larger cubes.

SPACE REQUIRED TO PLAY: As a frequent traveller, I know that space is sometimes a luxury. Qwirkle requires a table to play on. As the game proceeds, it can occupy a rather sizable space. Hence it isn’t a game suited to be played on different modes of transportation.

YOU ALWAYS NEED A PEN AND PAPER: Okay not so much a con but it is my one pet peeve. You need a pen and paper (can’t recount the number of times we have used tissues as a substitute) to record the score.

Where To Buy Qwirkle?

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5 ( Reviews) Price: $18.95 Details: Read more on Amazon!

Like I have mentioned before, we live in India and getting board games is hard because of the cost involved in shipping and customs. Our access to buying board games is largely when we travel or someone else is travelling.

We do know that there are a couple of shops in South East Asia that sell games. Personally, we have bought them from Malaysia and Singapore.

The games do have a premium on them but not as much as the ones in India. Europe also does have its own market for board games which does not hold too big a premium.

USA still has the cheapest market and the reference that we use for costs is Amazon . I’ve included the link to Qwirkle above in case you do live in the USA and are interested in buying your own piece.

I would describe Qwirkle as a cross between dominoes, sudoku, and scrabble. It’s simple and easy to learn, but there’s a surprising amount of strategy involved. This travel set is small and portable, but because the smaller tiles don’t crowd a table as quickly, it’s also convenient for playing at home. Andrew ( read more reviews now! )

Mind you, Qwirkle is also easily available on Amazon across other markets. I have seen it sold in numerous board game stores in Europe too!

So, there you have it. All my thoughts about why Qwirkle makes a great travel board game and a couple of cons that the board game does present to travellers. I can’t wait to hear your opinions. Have you played Qwirkle? Do you like to travel with it?
