We got from MIA to FAI in one day thanks to Flight Aware!

We had a long 3 segment flight from MIA to FAI through DTW and SEA. We only made it through this app. I used it to track all our flights plus the inbound flights that had our planes as we had a tight connection in DTW. Using notifications it let me know all the statuses and told me before Delta did of delays. Our initial flight had a 2 hour weather related ground stop while we were sitting on it and we would miss our connection in DTW except Flight Aware kept updating me that our DTW-SEA flight kept getting pushed back due to delays so when we got there we made the flight as it got pushed back a few more times due to mechanical issues with the jetway. Except we would miss out SEA-FAI connection! Once again Flight Aware informed me before Delta of delays with our SEA-FAI flight and we ended up making it! Without Flight Aware I might have wrongly accepted Delta’s offers to reschedule a day later and would have missed parts of our scheduled events in Fairbanks!

All good except for the update nag screen

Great app overall, but it has one incredibly annoying, erm, “feature” that I need to vent about. The app checks the App Store for updates at startup and, if an update is found, displays a nag screen about the update that you have to click through before proceeding, disrupting your workflow. For myself and the other 99% of iOS users who have Automatic Updates turned on for the very fact that we don’t want to—and shouldn’t have to, quite frankly—ever consciously think about updating apps and would rather have the OS do it for us automatically in the background at night, this manual update reminder is unnecessary and intrusive. None of my other apps are this OCD about updates. Relax already, the OS will update your app for us eventually. And, by the way, since the app apparently uses the App Store’s staged rollout option, whereby updates can take up to 7 days to reach 100% of users—to wit, I was only just today (Feb 22) auto updated to the Feb 15 release—displaying the update nag notice the instant the app is released makes this practice even more logic defying. If you insist on keeping this update screen, fine, but at least wait 8 days after the update is released to the App Store so that it is only seen by those who don’t use auto app updates.

won’t set up notifications

UPDATE: I waited a bit and before I deleted the app, I tried it one more time - the issue seems to have been fixed and the app is working as advertised. I actually got responses from the developer regarding this, which I found impressive and surprising. Changing my rating from one star to 5. PREVIOUS REVIEW: app worked fine for awhile, but suddenly, it will not allow me to set up notifications for flights. When I try to set a notification for a flight, I get a message that “email to friends for single day only” (or something similar). I don’t have emails to friends set up in my settings, so the error message makes no sense to me. I have settings to just email to me to track flights I want to meet. I tried turning off even emails to me to reset to “send to my device”, but I still get the error message. Flight Tracker is a much more reliable app, and it has become my go-to app for tracking flights I need to meet. This one just doesn’t work anymore.

Developer Response ,

***Update: This has been fixed as of yesterday afternoon (5/23). Again, sorry for the inconvenience. Hi Fran70809, Thanks for letting us know about the issue you found. We're working to address it and there should be a fix in the next few days. Sorry for the inconvenience.

How to Track the Status of Your Flight in Real Time

Google and flightaware are among the tools that can help you determine if your flight will be delayed—often even before the airline announces it..

If you’re wondering where in the world the airplane you’re supposed to be boarding soon might be, a flight tracking service can help.

Perhaps you want to track the status of your flight so you’re aware of any delays or changes that could affect your plans. Or maybe you want to double-check the anticipated arrival time of your loved one’s flight before heading to the airport to pick them up. Maybe you’re curious where the plane you just disembarked is going next. Or perhaps you saw a plane overhead and are wondering where it’s going. There are myriad reasons why you might want to check the status of a flight.

Luckily, there are tools to help you do that. Here are some of the best apps and websites for tracking a flight, and how to use them to check a flight’s status.

Flight status trackers

There are various apps and websites that share information on when your flight is expected to depart and land, but some can also give you a deep dive, pulling information like previous flights on that aircraft and what the weather looks like at the connecting airports. Here are a few flight trackers we recommend.

Entering your flight information into Google can help locate estimated departure time, terminal, and gate.

One of the easiest and fastest ways to check whether or not a flight is still slated to depart or arrive on time is to Google it. All you need to do is search for “[flight number] status” in the search bar (for example, “AA 2488 status”) and hit enter. Google then aggregates various flight-tracking websites and displays the estimated arrival and departure times at the top of the page. Google will also display the most up-to-date terminal and gate information.

FlightRadar24

If you’re looking to get the complete picture of where a plane is on its journey—including real-time position— FlightRadar24 is a helpful resource that comes in the form of both a website and a free app.

You can really get into the weeds and look at data like all the scheduled arrivals and departures at a specific airport, including what type of plane it is and who it’s registered to (both commercial carriers and private aircraft owners). It’s also possible to see a plane’s flight records and everywhere it’s previously flown—including that day or over its lifetime, depending on how you set the search parameters.

If you’ve seen a plane overhead and are wondering where it’s going, FlightRadar24 can help there, too. It can pull all the planes flying within your vicinity. If there are multiple planes flying within your vicinity, it’ll share all of them, which makes it more challenging to figure out which one you’re looking at exactly, but it can help give you an idea.

Those who opt for the Premium service (which ranges from $10 to $500 per year, depending on the plan) can also learn more about the exact type of aircraft, how fast it’s going, and its altitude.

FlightAware

Like FlightRadar24, FlightAware offers flight tracking data for any commercial flight worldwide with the help of a network of servers that capture a plane’s position in real time.

Whether you’re a frequent flier or an aviation geek, there are many ways to use the free service (available in both app and website form). If you have the flight number, FlightAware can provide information about expected departure and arrival times. If you don’t have the flight number, the Flight Finder option can help locate the flight number (though you do need to know the aircraft’s origin and destination airport). FlightAware also offers an interactive MiseryMap , which can show you what airports are currently experiencing problems (and more specifically, what routes are seeing delays and cancellations that day).

FlightAware is available as a free app or website, with the possibility of searching for five flights per month. After that, there are a handful of premium plans, which range from $40 to $130 per month, depending on how deep of a dive you want to do, such as tracking more flights or following a specific plane over time.

How flight tracking apps and websites work

Flight tracking apps and websites track flights in real time, all over the world. They’re used to check the status of a flight, see if an inbound aircraft has any anticipated delays, observe the weather radar throughout the flight path, view the exact route a plane is taking, and determine what type of aircraft it is.

Typically, they work by crowdsourcing where planes are at any given time (which is possible because planes are constantly sharing their position with other aircraft and air traffic controllers for safety reasons). They gain access to this information through satellites.

Beyond letting you know if your flight will be delayed, flight trackers can help travelers get ahead of potential log jams, especially during busy travel periods (like the holiday season) or any time inclement weather threatens to derail your plans. Knowing ahead of time that your flight will be significantly delayed allows you to start proactively researching alternative flights and get yourself rebooked before everyone else on your flight starts flooding the help desks and customer service lines.

How to Track a Flight in Real Time

Ever wondered how to track a flight? Here’s what you need to know, including nine flight tracker apps and websites to check out.

real time air travel

If you've ever looked up at a plane flying by and wondered where it's coming from and where it's going, it's actually rather easy to find out. Thanks to flight tracking programs, all the information about any given flight is just a click (or tap) away. These days, many flight trackers provide real-time updates about a plane's location, altitude, and speed, and they can be used to monitor nearly all commercial and cargo flights, and even some private and military flights, too. So if you're curious about where your inbound flight is, or if you'd like to track the arrival of someone you're picking up at the airport, you can use a flight tracker to keep tabs on the plane.

How does flight tracking work?

Radar is technically still the global standard for tracking flights, but it has many limitations — numerous areas don't have radar coverage, like the majority of the ocean. Today, flight tracking is shifting to a surveillance system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast, or ADS-B. "Most aircraft today (and virtually all commercial aircraft) are now equipped with an ADS-B transponder which shares every second its detailed position, altitude, and speed parameters with other aircraft and with air traffic control. This is a much more efficient system than the previous system relying on radar," Kathleen Bangs, a spokesperson for flight tracking company FlightAware, tells Travel + Leisure . Companies that track flights can use global networks of ADS-B receivers to determine the positions of flights all around the world.

How to Track a Flight

While the specifics vary depending on your tracker of choice, generally speaking, you can input any flight number into a flight tracking app or website and see all the key data about that flight, from its ETA to its altitude to its ground speed. Some flight trackers are less sophisticated and might only provide limited information, like departure and arrival times.

Best Flight Tracker Apps and Websites

Flightaware.

" FlightAware operates the world's largest flight tracking and data platform," says Bangs. "We receive data from our terrestrial network of over 35,000 ADS-B receivers in 195 countries, air traffic control systems in over 45 countries, FlightAware-Aireon global space-based ADS-B, and datalink (satellite/VHF) via every major provider including ARINC, SITA, Satcom Direct, Garmin, and Honeywell GoDirect." On both the desktop website and the mobile app, you can input specific flights to track, or you can look at a global map to see what planes are nearby. We particularly like that you can add a weather radar overlay to the map.

Flightradar24

"Flight tracking on Flightradar24 is powered by a network of ADS-B receivers, the largest such independent network in the world. Individuals apply to host an ADS-B receiver, and once installed, this receives signals from aircraft," Chris Lomas, a Flightradar24 aviation content specialist, tells T+L . "Thousands of aircraft are tracked by our network each day." Like Flight Aware, it has a global map for you to peruse current flights. But one of the most fun tools on the Flightradar24 app, specifically, is the AR feature. When you use it, it opens up your camera, and any plane within the image will be tagged with details like its flight number, departure point, and destination.

Plane Finder

Plane Finder has both a global map showing air traffic as well as a search function to find specific flights using flight numbers, routes, callsigns, tail numbers, or even aircraft types or airports. It also provides useful data points for airports and airlines, from departure and arrival boards to a list of the different aircraft in a fleet.

RadarBox is another service that shows a real-time map of current flights. Our favorite feature is the most-viewed flights ticker at the top of the webpage, which is updated with real-time viewer stats. You can also tune into several air traffic control radios.

FlightView doesn't have a full map like FlightAware, Flightradar24, Plane Finder, or RadarBox, but it does allow you to track your flights with ease by inputting either your flight number or your departure and arrival information. It also has a useful airport delay map, which shows the delay status of many of the major airports around the country.

FlightStats

FlightStats is quite similar to FlightView in that its sole purpose is tracking specific flights. You can also research current conditions at airports, from delays to weather forecasts, as well as see a full list of arrivals and departures at each airport.

Flighty is a particularly useful flight-tracking app that keeps your data from past flights, so you can track annual and lifetime data (for example, how many miles you've flown or how many different aircraft you've flown). It's also ideal for keeping tabs on changing information in real-time, such as equipment changes, gate changes, and delays — and you can easily set up notifications.

Google Flight Tracker

Google's flight tracker might not be very advanced, but it does provide some crucial information: departure and arrival times and gate information. All you have to do is search for a flight number on Google, and a box with those details will appear in the search results. There's also a helpful visual to show you how much of the flight has been completed.

Airline Apps

You can also track a flight via the airline's app by navigating to the Flight Status tool (you can also find this on an airline website). Though each airline has its own tracking features, they typically show the departure and arrival times, gate information, altitude, and map of where the plane is located.

If you also need info on online check-in procedures or baggage rules and fees, we also provide that for each airline for each airline.

American Airlines

Carrying an average of more than 500,000 passengers daily, American (AA) Airlines is the biggest commercial airline in the world and one of the founding members of the OneWorld alliance.  Operating to/from 55 countries stretching five continents, American has a network of 95 international and 95 domestic destinations. The airline has 10 hubs, with the largest one being Dallas/Fort Worth. Use the  American AA flight status tracker  to track this airline's flight.

United Airlines

United Airlines is the third largest commercial airline in the world. The Star Alliance member has a route system that stretches to 48 countries across five continents, with a total of 118 international destinations (Africa has returned to be a part of United Airlines' fly-zone once again). Domestically, United operates in 240 destinations. The airline operates 8 hubs, with the largest one in Chicago. The  United flight status tracker  will provide you live information specific to the flights of this airline.

Delta Airlines

Being one of the founding members of the SkyTeam alliance, Delta Air Lines is the second-largest airline in the world. Delta flies over 325 destinations worldwide, serving in 52 countries on six continents. They're the only company that operates flights from the US to Copenhagen, Lagos, Stuttgart, and Dakar. The airline has 9 hubs located all over the US, with the largest one being in Atlanta. Want to  track your Delta Airlines flight?

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue Airways is the seventh-largest airline in North America in terms of passengers carried. This  low-cost  carrier has a large network of 100+ domestic and international destinations. Most of these are centered around the United States and the Caribbean. It also operates in a smaller number of destinations in Central and South America. It was one of the first airlines to be granted a license to fly to Cuba in 2015. It isn't part of any major airline alliances but has codeshare agreements with 21 airlines. Track your Jetblue flights using the  JetBlue Airways flight status .

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines is currently the world's largest low-cost carrier. Southwest operates in the United States as well as to Mexico, Central America,  & the Caribbean, flying to over 100 destinations. Being one of the major American airlines, it carried the most domestic passengers in the States in 2022. The airline focuses on a point-to-point system and doesn't use the hub and spoke system of major airlines. All your Southwest flights can be tracked using the  Southwest Airlines flight status tracker .

Note that most airlines (like Delta, United, Southwest, British Airways, etc), use slightly different criteria for "arrival" vs "departure", vs what the airport might report, or the civil aviation authority (i.e. the FAA). Is the aircraft at the gate, or is it actually taxiing? This is why the live flight tracker aggregates the flight status information from multiple sources,  helping travelers to accurately track flights  in real-time.

About the Flight Tracker

iFly, along with a myriad of websites and apps,  provides a live flight tracking system that gives passengers with real-time updates on where the flight is at any moment. The flight tracker gives you the power to track a flights' status, see their arrival and departure times, check the gates associated with the flights, and get the live position of your tracked flight on our interactive map.

Whether you're the occasional vacationer or business traveler, you won't need to be rushing to the airport prematurely, or worse yet, be late after making your friends wait in the lounge. You'll also avoid the hassle of locating your flight at the airport and looking at different gate monitors to find where you're supposed to go. Additionally, you'll save yourself from the frustration of unnecessary waiting at the airport in case your flight is canceled. If you're a plane-spotting aviation enthusiast, you already know how valuable flight trackers are!  Explore more benefits of flight tracking here .

How it works

A ircraft are tracked by a variety of means , but primarily through their use of trans p ond ers . Aircraft trans p ond ers are devices that emit a signal that is received by ground - based receivers . The signal provides information about the aircraft , including its altitude , speed , and location . The trans p onder signal is also used to identify the aircraft to air traffic controllers .

The flight tracker relies on a host of technologies , including advanced GPS technology and ADS-B receivers and satellites stationed worldwide, making it possible to securely track flights and their arrival or departure times in real-time. This easy-to-use feature only requires you to provide your flight number, date of departure, or the route to track the location, status, and timing of every flight.

The  information  from  these  various  tracking  systems  is  combined  to  create  a  " picture "  of  the  aircraft 's  location . This  information  is  used  by  air  traffic  controllers  to  direct  aircraft  and  ensure  that  they  are  safely  separated .

Flight Tracker Q&A

The flight tracker relies on a variety of technologies, including aircraft transponders, ground-based ADS-B receivers, satellite-based ADS-B receivers, and GPS data, to track the location, status, and timing of flights in real-time. This information is used by air traffic controllers to direct aircraft and ensure that they are safely separated.

As a traveler, you can use the flight tracker to search for flights and track their status in real-time. This can be useful for making travel plans and ensuring that you have up-to-date information about your own flights or the flights of loved ones.

You can access a variety of information about a flight through the flight tracker, including the flight's status, arrival and departure times, gates, and live position on an interactive map. You can also access information about the airline, aircraft type, and flight duration.

The flight tracker can typically be accessed from a variety of devices, including desktop computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

The flight tracker may be available for a variety of flights, including commercial passenger flights, cargo flights, and private aircraft. However, the availability of flight tracker information may vary depending on the specific flight and the technologies used to track it.

There may be some limitations to the flight tracker's capabilities, such as the ability to track flights in certain locations or during certain weather conditions. It is also important to note that the accuracy of the flight tracker information may depend on the source and the reliability of the tracking technologies used.

Airlines and aviation authorities may use the flight tracker to manage air traffic and ensure the safety of flights. They may also use the flight tracker to access up-to-date information about the location and status of flights for a variety of purposes.

Real-Time Flight Tracker | Flightradar.live | Watch Air Traffic Live

Flight tracker, flight tracking from the comfort of your own home – is that possible, how do you track flights with flightradar.live.

Below we give you some tips on how to start tracking flights using the above map.

The map displays a section of airspace. Depending on which page you have selected, flightradar.live will show you either part of Europe or an airport for flight tracking. To zoom in or out of the flight radar, you can adjust your view by clicking the “+” or “-” sign in the top left corner.

If you want to move the airspace, one click is enough; simply hold down the mouse to move the map. You can of course also view the flightradar.live flight tracker on your mobile phone. Whether you use an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, the flight tracker information can be viewed on any device, including Internet-enabled tablets. It’s very easy to use; you can move the flight radar with two fingers, zooming in or out. Just make sure that your fingers are not too close to each other.

What flight information is displayed?

If you want to track a flight , you simply place the cursor over a yellow plane and the flight number will be displayed. If you click on the aircraft, a menu opens to the left of the flight radar. At the top, you will see the type of aircraft and, if you click on the image, you can view the aircraft image in full-screen mode. There may be several pictures of the same aircraft type. Below the picture, you will once again see the aircraft name and the airline.

The details in the grey area are relevant for flight tracking. Here you will find information about the route , the departure and arrival times as well as the current flight status. You will also find additional data, such as altitude, airspeed and information about the flight radar. At the very bottom you will see the latitude and longitude.

Where does the flight tracking data come from?

Plane photographed against the sun

The real-time aircraft location information shown here for flight tracking purposes is an online service provided by Flightradar24.com, which is operated by Stockholm-based sky scanner company Flightradar24 AB.

The signals emitted by ADS-B transmitters are received by ground-based ADS-B receivers and transmitted to the Flightradar24 network over the Internet for radar spotting purposes. Most modern civil aviation aircraft – and some military aircraft – today are equipped with these devices. The transmitted location data of the aircraft in question is correlated with further information about the aircraft type and route, and is displayed on a map. A view based on Google Earth has been used since spring 2013. The cockpit view makes you feel as though you’re actually inside the plane. This function was temporarily unavailable for flight tracking, but has been reinstalled as part of a complete overhaul of the entire website.

How do I get an ADS-B receiver?

By the end of 2014, based on information from Flightradar24, more than 4,000 ADS-B receivers were in use as sky scanners and providing their data to the website for flight tracking.

According to the operators, these receivers cover around 90% of European airspace as well as some regions of North America, Australia and the Middle East. The website claims (as of mid-2014) to see approximately 7 million visitors a month with an interest in flight radar information.

How current is the flight tracking data from the sky scanners?

Not all of the flights shown on the flight radar are displayed in real time : FAA regulations require a delay of approximately 5 minutes for flights whose data is provided directly by the FAA; this applies in particular to the North American airspace. By contrast, the flights whose location information is provided by ADS-B data are displayed in real time, according to Flightradar24.

There is both a free and a paid version of the scy scanner app available for Android and iOS-based devices. The paid version comes with a multitude of additional flight tracker features and is ad-free. There was only one paid sky scanner app for Windows and this was removed from the Windows Store in 2016.

Where else is flight tracker technology used?

Flight tracking technology is not only used on the mainland. A wave glider floating in the Norwegian Sea has been sending aircraft location data to Flightradar24 since September 2016.

Who is using the flight radar or sky scanners to track flights?

A lot of people find it interesting to track flights using flightradar.live . These may be plane enthusiasts or people who need the information for their hobby . Others may just want to see when a family member’s flight actually takes off.

There are many reasons why somebody might wish to use a sky scanner to track a flight and discover details about the altitude or plane.

What is a plane spotter?

Several Grumman E-2 Hawkeye in flight

You’re sure to have seen them before; the aviation enthusiasts who visit airports with cameras and large lenses . They are known as plane spotters and they are experts at flight tracking. Plane spotters may have collections of thousands of pictures of aircraft from hundreds of airlines, which have usually been taken at many different national and international airports.

Plane spotters are particularly interested in the plane’s registration , which is much like a car’s licence plate. The aim for many is to see every registration worn by each aircraft of a particular airline. This information and the aircraft type are displayed in a menu on the flight radar when you click on an aircraft. If you use the flightradar.live flight tracker, you can access the various airports quickly and easily via the menu. You will find the following flight radars, amongst others:

What is the history of plane spotting?

Plane spotting has its origins in the tracking of aircraft flights during World War II . In England, civilians in the coastal regions were asked to record the registrations of German aircraft in English airspace.

To this day, it is common in England to record only the registrations without taking any photos . Taking photos of aircraft only became widespread over time. The digitisation of photography, in particular, added fresh impetus to flight tracking. In addition to photography, the filming of aircraft also became more widespread. On Youtube today, you can find videos of most varied aircraft .

Flight tracking skills can also be applied outside of the aviation industry. Besides plane spotting, ship spotting and train spotting are also well established. These enthusiasts essentially do the same thing as plane spotters, but are interested in ships or trains.

What equipment does a spotter need?

A high-quality camera is essential if you want to take good pictures. A flight tracking camera needs to be able to focus and capture images quickly , which is important as planes travel at over 200 km/h. Bridge cameras , System cameras or SLR cameras are good options. A focal length of between 50 mm to 200 mm is recommended for photos from viewing platforms. For photos from outside the airport, the focal length should be 200 mm or higher.

You will also need memory cards and a tripod . Of course, to identify which planes are on the tarmac or landing, it is worth checking on flightradar.live. This will tell you in advance when an interesting aircraft has just left an airport in Sydney, for example, and will soon land in Frankfurt. This will allow you to plan better and mean that you will not be waiting around in vain.

A summer trend: Drones

These colourful, buzzing unmanned aerial vehicles (also known as UAVs) have become ubiquitous. From amusement park stalls to discount stores. What is behind the trend for drones ? For one thing, these remote-controlled aircraft are cheap to buy and easy to handle even for beginners after a little practice. Discount stores have some small drones on offer from around € 30. Larger aircraft with a built-in camera retail for upwards of € 100.

However, there is no such thing as unlimited freedom in the sky! To avoid run-ins with the police, there are a few rules that must be observed as the whirring UAVs can present a nuisance to some.

What is allowed?

Drones weighing up to 30 kilograms may be flown without a permit . However, privacy must be protected .

What are the most important points to bear in mind when handling a drone?

As the drone pilot, you should maintain visual contact with your drone at all times . Heavy drones (in excess of 500 g) can cause major damage if they should crash. We therefore recommend checking with your insurance company to make sure you have adequate coverage. Remember, drones are not a toy. Therefore, do not allow children below the age of 14 to use a drone unsupervised. The wind is another factor that is all too often neglected. If an insufficient distance is maintained from humans or animals, a sudden gust can quickly present a hazard and cause a crash.

What should be avoided when using drones?

Drones should not be permitted to fly within a radius of 100 m from large gatherings . Particular caution is also required in the vicinity of airports . The flight-tracking sky scanner on flightradar.live is helpful in connection with this. This flight radar allows you to track flights as they happen and take timely security measures. Drone cameras should only be used for photographing landscapes and close friends, especially if the captured photos or videos are later to be published on social media.

For more information about drones and what is and what is not allowed, visit: wikipedia.com .

How ai is set to transform airports and air travel.

In the rapidly evolving world of air travel, artificial intelligence is being applied to provide innovation throughout the entire experience. As we navigate through airports today, most of the seamless operations we take for granted—from security screenings to baggage handling—are powered by technologies which include AI. Yet, we’ve only just touched the surface with how AI can continue to transform air travel and the airport experience.

At the recent 2024 SXSW Conference and Festivals that took place in March 2024, Bernadette Berger, Director of Innovation at Alaska Airlines, presented on The Sky's the Limit: How AI will Reimagine Airports . She shared how AI-enabled technologies optimizing operations and transforming passenger experience. As AI technologies such as facial recognition, predictive analytics, personalized digital assistants, and real-time navigation are further brought into the entire travel experience, airports will be transformed into fully accessible and immersive hubs for travel, retail and entertainment.

The panel “The Sky's the Limit: How AI will Reimagine Airports” focused on AI within the airport. The panel had additional experts in the aviation industry including Celley Buchanan (Alaska Airlines), Matt Gilkeson (Transportation Security Administration) and Ian Law (Los Angeles World Airports).

In a followup interview on Cognilytica’s AI Today podcast , Bernadette expanded on her talk, and shares more insights for this article.

Q: How do you see your role in expanding the use of AI in air transport?

Bernadette Berger : “I am the Director of Innovation at Alaska Airlines. I got my professional start actually in aviation. I'm a trained industrial designer, which means that I design physical and digital and spatial things and jumped right into designing aircraft architecture for over a decade. I fell in love with airplanes. I am a huge airplane nerd.

At Alaska, my team and I have built up the innovation practice for the company. We work on bringing together emerging technologies and human needs, either for our own employees or for our guests. We prototype in our innovation lab quickly to develop technology demonstrators, experience demonstrators, proof of concepts, test these experiences out at the airport, and eventually move them into our operations. That way, we can make sure that when we do launch new technology, we do it quickly, but also we do it in a way that's still a great experience for our employees and for our guests”

Netflix renews and also cancels the witcher as first glimpse of season 4 drops, bitcoin suddenly braced for a 35 trillion halving price earthquake.

Q: How do you see AI transform the passenger experience?

Bernadette Berger : There's two types of travelers. There's the folks who skate into the airport at the last minute. They don't want to check a bag, don't want to hang out at the airport, and just want to go from one mode of transportation to the next as quickly as possible without stopping. Then there's the passengers who want to get to the airport hours ahead of time. They want to hang out at the lounge. They want to buy a book and buy some coffee. They need things to be able to do at the airport as well. On the panel, the first thing we talked about was how we are creating a space and offering to help both types of travelers.

People may not know that AI is already very prevalent in the airport. As a passenger, you might not really feel it, because I would say we are in our efficiency era right now. Airports, airlines, and our security agencies are looking for ways to do what they're doing today, but with greater efficiency using AI. Layering computer vision algorithms on top of all of the security cameras, or using AI to be able to reduce the number of lanes that need to be used or machines that need to be used in security, or even creating tools for our employees to be able to help guests get the customer service that they need faster are all examples of how AI is currently being used in travel. All of these examples are still very much in the efficiency space, and I'm really interested to see as we evolve past just understanding the data we have, where we might go next.”

Q: What are some of the challenges you see with AI adoption within the transportation industry?

Bernadette Berger : Transportation is such a complex ecosystem. I mean, airports are cities in themselves. Every airport is controlled and governed differently. As an airline, we operate at 113 different airports with thousands of employees working across those airports. The differences between those operations is immense.

So, to be able to begin a conversation about how you can develop an AI solution for a complex problem, let's say, around bags, isn’t always as easy as it sounds. However, it’s a great application for AI because we have so much data around bags, and we can be more proactive and predictive around the way that we move the thousands of checked bags daily.

So what we do to break down this big, gnarly challenge in our innovation practice is we break down those human challenges and technology gaps into the smallest, quickest test that we can prove. And that way, an entire program might include the proving out of eight different components. First we need to collect data. Then we need an approach that can be specific for this need. Then we need to communicate those results in an interaction form for a very, very busy airport employee. And we need to communicate that to our guests. So, we need a solution that’s actually easy to interact with.

In my innovation group we break all those down. We run very fast tests in our innovation lab, where we build things out of cardboard and wood and we mount kit cameras and train and refine our algorithms there. Then we move them into the airport where we can test it in the real airport environment with real passengers and real customer service agents. From all of those small, fast iterations, we learn so much, and we learn quickly. This approach allows us to move on from programs that we otherwise could have sunk an entire team’s efforts over the course of one year only to find out it is not the right way.

Once we have proven those small tests, that's when we move it into operations. And that's where you then can say, because we've broken down this problem into its eight sub components, those are different modular ways that this AI model can flex in this situation for the way that we are handling bags at this airport. All these steps build together. It can be very daunting for teams to figure out how to apply especially such a broad topic of technology to their challenges. But we see it as human needs, technology gaps, and how can you find those small wins along the way.

Q: How do you see AI impacting passenger and customer experience?

Bernadette Berger : This is really an efficiency game, right? So the things that you might feel as a passenger is just that your checked bags have arrived at their destination. The things you might feel as a passenger are around safety and security. As you move through the airport, as you move through the air, you might feel that your interactions with a gate agent feel really warm and personal and they knew that you needed to have your seats reassigned so that you could sit with my family. They also knew that, hey, you’d love to have a coffee and a cookie or a chocolate bar when you get on the plane.

It might just feel like a good experience, but there's a lot behind the scenes that are working to make that happen. Biometrics is one of the things that I think is going to become a really big shift for passengers, but also continue to help us be able to navigate your day of travel with more simplicity. If you're traveling in a group, and you've got four different passports, do you ever do the juggle of trying to fumble for the phone to get the boarding pass going trying to manage all the different ways to prove that you are who you are and that you're supposed to be there and you're supposed to be on this flight?

We're excited about moving to a model where you can move through the airport and onto the plane with just your face or with just your phone, whether that's your mobile digital identity, whether that's comparing your beautiful face to the image that our government agencies already have of you from your driver's license or from your passport. Just comparing that photo will make it a lot easier for our guests to be prepared for a day of travel and move through the airport. Guests can experience faster lines, less lines, and less hassle. No one wants to wait in line. The hurry up and wait game is not fun.

But as we think about moving ahead and we think about being proactive and predictive for our guests now, we think about how we can make that big morning rush start to taper out so that there are no lines at the airport. Because I've sent you a real time offer saying, hey, I know that it's 09:00 a.m. and you're rushing to the plane. Just one tap here if you want to order your favorite coffee drink ahead of time. It'll be there at the counter near your gate, ready for you. All you have to do is walk by and grab it. Just making these offers and recommendations at the right time in an interaction that isn't requiring a guest to read and comprehend and make a decision has a big impact. You're in decision fatigue by the time you've gotten to the airport. It just needs to be easy. Everyone wants to feel escorted from home to the plane. And if there's ways that we can use our algorithms and our recommendations and technology to do that, then we're going to make travel not only easier for all, but more accessible for more people.

Air Travel Consumer Report: January 2024 Numbers

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) today released its Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) on airline operational data compiled for the month of January 2024 for on-time performance, mishandled baggage, and mishandled wheelchairs and scooters. The ATCR is designed to assist consumers with information on the quality of services provided by airlines.

DOT expects that airlines will operate flights as scheduled and that when they do not, airlines will provide consumers the services consumers have been promised when a flight is canceled or delayed because of an airline issue. After a two-year DOT push to improve the passenger experience, the 10 largest airlines now guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodations. Consumer-friendly information regarding airline commitments to their customers is available on the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard at FlightRights.Gov. DOT also pushed airlines to provide fee-free family seating and rolled out a new family seating dashboard that highlights the airlines that guarantee fee-free family seating, and those of the 10 largest that do not, making it easier for parents to avoid paying junk fees to sit with their children when they fly.

In addition, DOT is improving transportation for individuals with disabilities. In July 2023, DOT finalized a rule which requires airlines to make lavatories on new, single-aisle aircraft more accessible. Then, in February 2024, DOT issued a proposal to address other barriers that Americans who use a wheelchair encounter when it comes to air travel by, among other things, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passenger with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs.

Further, when necessary, DOT takes enforcement action against airlines and ticket agents that fail to comply with the Department’s aviation consumer protection requirements. In 2023, DOT issued the largest fines in the history of the consumer protection office. This includes a $140 million penalty against Southwest Airlines for failing passengers during the 2022 holiday meltdown. That penalty, which was in addition to over $600 million DOT already ensured was refunded by Southwest to passengers, requires Southwest to establish a $90 million compensation system for future passengers affected by significant delays and cancellations. DOT has helped return more than $3 billion in refunds to travelers since the pandemic began.

Flight Operations

The 560,352 flights operated in January 2024 were 99.56% of the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023. Operated flights in January 2024 were down 0.44% year-over-year from the 562,845 flights operated in January 2023 and down 7.18% month-over-month from 603,756 flights operated in December 2023.

"U.S. Airlines Operated Domestic Flights: January 2022-January 2024. Operated=Scheduled - Canceled"

In January 2024, the 10 marketing network carriers reported 582,425 scheduled domestic flights, 22,073 (3.8%) of which were canceled. In December 2023, airlines scheduled 606,218 domestic flights, 2,462 (1.3%) of which were canceled. In January 2023, airlines scheduled 573,877 domestic flights, 11,032 (1.9%) of which were canceled.

On January 6, 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered the grounding of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with a mid-cabin door plug installed operated by U.S. airlines or in U.S. territory. On January 24, 2024, FAA cleared all such aircraft to return to service after each aircraft operator successfully completed a new inspection process approved by the FAA. Alaska Airlines and United Airlines have informed the DOT that the grounding of the 737 MAX9 aircraft with the mid-cabin door plug installed has impacted their on-time statistics during this reporting period.

January 2024 On-Time Arrival

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 72.8%, down from both 83.9% in December 2023 and from 76.2% in January 2023.

Highest Marketing Carrier On-Time Arrival Rates January 2024 (ATCR Table 1)

  • Delta Airlines Network – 77.8%
  • Allegiant Air – 75.6%
  • Southwest Airlines – 73.9%

Lowest Marketing Carrier On-Time Arrival Rates January 2024 (ATCR Table 1)

  • Alaska Airlines Network – 64.7%
  • JetBlue Airways – 69.5%
  • American Airlines Network – 70.5%

January 2024 Flight Cancellations

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers canceled 3.8% of their scheduled domestic flights, higher than both the rate of 0.4% in December 2023 and the rate of 1.9% in January 2023.

Lowest Marketing Carrier Rates of Canceled Flights January 2024 (ATCR Table 6)

  • Hawaiian Airlines – 1.5%
  • Spirit Airlines – 1.5%
  • JetBlue Airways – 1.7%

Highest Marketing Carrier Rates of Canceled Flights January 2024 (ATCR Table 6)

  • Alaska Airlines Network – 11.9%
  • United Airlines Network – 6.9%
  • Southwest Airlines – 3.1%

Complaints About Airline Service

The release of air travel service complaint data in the Air Travel Consumer Report (ATCR) has been delayed primarily because of the continued high volume of complaints against airlines and ticket agents received by the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) and the time needed to review and process these consumer complaints. The Department is investing in modernizing its system for handling consumer complaints with the support of a Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) investment to improve the customer experience for the tens of thousands of consumers who use the system each year and enable OACP to more effectively engage in oversight of the airline industry.

As DOT modernizes its system, given the continued high volume of air travel service complaints concerning airlines and ticket agents, DOT has revised how it processes consumer complaints received after June 1, 2023. From June 2023 until the date its system is modernized, DOT intends to revise the ATCR to display consumer submissions (complaints, inquiries, and opinions) as opposed to complaints for this period. The Department will continue to display civil rights complaints in the ATCR in a similar manner as before and anticipates publishing submission and civil rights complaint numbers in spring.

Tarmac Delays

In January 2024, airlines reported 71 tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights, compared to five tarmac delays of more than three hours on domestic flights reported in December 2023. In January 2024, airlines reported six tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights, compared to zero tarmac delays of more than four hours on international flights reported in December 2023.

Airlines are required to have and adhere to assurances that they will not allow aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours for domestic flights and four hours for international flights without providing passengers the option to deplane, subject to exceptions related to safety, security, and Air Traffic Control related reasons. An exception also exists for departure delays if the airline begins to return the aircraft to a suitable disembarkation point to deplane passengers by those times.

The Department investigates extended tarmac delays.

Mishandled Baggage

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers handled 37.4 million bags and posted a mishandled baggage rate of 0.75%, higher than both the rate of 0.50% in December 2023 and the rate of 0.73% in January 2023.

The Department began displaying the mishandled baggage data as a percentage (i.e., per 100 bags enplaned) in January 2022. This is consistent with the manner that the mishandled wheelchairs and scooters rate is calculated and displayed.     In the prior three calendar year reports (2019 to 2021), the Department calculated the mishandled baggage rate based on the number of mishandled bags per 1,000 checked bags.

Mishandled Wheelchairs and Scooters

In January 2024, reporting marketing carriers reported checking 56,659 wheelchairs and scooters and mishandling 836 for a rate of 1.48% mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, higher than the rate of 1.39% mishandled in December 2023 and lower than the rate of 1.47% mishandled in January 2023.

As described earlier, in February 2024, the Department announced its proposal to strengthen its rule implementing the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) to address the serious problems that individuals with disabilities using wheelchairs and scooters face when traveling by air that impact their safety and dignity, including mishandled wheelchairs and scooters and improper transfers to and from aircraft seats, aisle chairs, and personal wheelchairs. The proposed rule would require that airlines meet strict standards in accommodating passengers with disabilities by setting new standards for prompt, safe, and dignified assistance, mandating enhanced training for airline employees and contractors who physically assist passengers with disabilities and handle passengers’ wheelchairs, and outlining actions that airlines must take to protect passengers when a wheelchair is damaged during transport. The proposed rule also clarifies that damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair is an automatic violation of the ACAA.

Bumping/Oversales

Bumping/oversales data, unlike other air carrier data, are reported quarterly rather than monthly. For the fourth quarter of 2023, the 10 U.S. reporting marketing carriers posted an involuntary denied boarding, or bumping, rate of 0.20 per 10,000 passengers, lower than both the rate of 0.35 in the third quarter of 2023 and the rate of 0.30 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Incidents Involving Animals

As part of its IT modernization, DOT’s Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) is improving the options for covered carriers to submit their monthly and annual Reports on Incidents Involving Animals During Air Transport. While the new system is being developed, OACP is permitting covered carriers to delay submission of reports on incidents involving animals during air transport. Annual data on such incidents will be published when DOT receives carriers’ complete submissions of the 2023 data.

In January 2024, carriers reported zero incidents involving the death, injury, or loss of an animal while traveling by air, equal to the zero reports filed in both December 2023 and in January 2023.

Consumers may file air travel consumer or civil rights complaints online at   https://secure.dot.gov/air-travel-complaint , or they may mail a complaint to the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, U.S. Department of Transportation, C-70, W96-432, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590.

Iran launches barrage of strikes toward Israel

By Tori B. Powell , Sophie Tanno, Emma Tucker , Kaanita Iyer , Paul LeBlanc and Adrienne Vogt , Jerome Taylor and James Legge, CNN

Our live coverage of Iran's attack on Israel has moved here .

Iran warns its response will be "stronger and more resolute" if Israel retaliates following latest strikes

From CNN’s Alireza Hajihosseini and Eyad Kourdi

An anti-missile system operates as seen from Ashkelon, Israel, on Sunday.

Iran has warned that it will respond with more force if Israel retaliates over this weekend's strikes, which Tehran said were themselves a reply to an Israeli attack earlier this month on its embassy complex in Syria's capital Damascus.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right of self-defense when required," Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said in a statement.

Citing self-defense against repeated Israeli military aggressions, Iravani said the strikes were specifically in retaliation to an Israeli attack on April 1 against what Iran says were diplomatic facilities in Damascus.

Iran claims the attack violated international law and led to the death of seven Iranian military advisors, including key commanders from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The statement also criticizes the United Nations Security Council for “failing to uphold international peace,” allowing Israel to “breach” established international norms and “escalate” regional tensions.

Additional context: Israel has carried out numerous strikes on Iran-backed targets in Syria, often targeting weapons shipments allegedly intended for Hezbollah, a powerful Iranian proxy in Lebanon.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the April 1 attack which destroyed an Iranian consulate building in the capital Damascus, including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top Revolutionary Guards commander.

However an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN that their intelligence showed the building was not a consulate and was instead “a military building of Quds forces disguised as a civilian building.”

China expresses 'deep concern', calls for ceasefire

From CNN's Philip Wang and Irene Nasser

China has expressed "deep concern" over the "current escalation" following Iran's attack on Israel, according to a spokesperson for its Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, adding that it is a "spillover of the Gaza conflict" and a ceasefire should be implemented without delay.

In a statement, China called "on relevant parties to exercise calm and restraint to prevent further escalations."

"The ongoing situation is the latest spillover of the Gaza conflict," the spokesperson said, adding that a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas should be implemented without any more delay.

Beijing did not  name or condemn Hamas  in the wake of the initial October 7 attacks. Since then, it has condemned the war and been a vocal  proponent of an immediate ceasefire  and the implementation of a “two-state” solution.

Last month, Chinese diplomat Wang Kejian met Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Qatar, the first meeting between a Chinese and Hamas official publicly acknowledged by Beijing since the outbreak of the  war in Gaza .

Wang’s visit follows efforts by Beijing to step up its profile as a  peace broker in the Middle East conflict.

US forces intercepted 70+ drones and at least three ballistic missiles, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Haley Britzky

US forces intercepted more than 70 one-way attack drones and at least three ballistic missiles during Iran's attack on Israel, according to two US officials familiar with the situation.

The ballistic missiles were intercepted by warships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, one of the officials said. Iran launched more than 100 ballistic missiles in total at Israel, according to a senior administration official.

The US Navy currently has two destroyers in that area, both are guided missile destroyers capable of intercepting missile and drone launches.

US fighter jets were also part of the response to Iran’s attack on Saturday and shot down drones launched towards Israel, another US official told CNN.

Biden to meet with G7 leaders Sunday as he condemns Iran's "brazen attack"

From CNN’s Lauren Koenig

US President Joe Biden will meet with G7 leaders Sunday “to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s brazen attack,” according to a statement released by the White House.

“My team will engage with their counterparts across the region. And we will stay in close touch with Israel’s leaders,” the statement from Biden reads. “And while we have not seen attacks on our forces or facilities today, we will remain vigilant to all threats and will not hesitate to take all necessary action to protect our people.”

US defensive assets moved to the region earlier this week and “helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles,” according to the statement.

Biden also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu following Saturday’s attack “to reaffirm America’s ironclad commitment to the security of Israel.”

United Airlines cancels three Middle East flights

From CNN’s Sara Smart

At least three United Airlines flights headed to or departing from the Middle East have been canceled amid the ongoing conflict unfolding between Iran and Israel.

On Saturday a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Tel Aviv, a flight from Washington D.C. to Amman, Jordan, and one from Dubai to Newark were canceled, the airline told CNN in a statement.

There have been no changes to any Sunday flights for United as of Saturday night, according to the airline.

CNN has reached out to other airlines regarding cancellations.

Biden told Netanyahu US will not participate in offensive operations against Iran, US official says

From CNN's MJ Lee

A US Marine guards the entrance to the West Wing of the White House on Saturday.

The US will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran, US President Joe Biden has made clear to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.

The comments were relayed during the phone call that the two leaders shared in the aftermath of Iran's retaliatory strikes against Israel.

Biden tells Netanyahu tonight was a win, nothing of "value" hit in Israel, US official says

Israel should consider tonight a win because the current US assessment is that Iran’s attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel’s superior military capability, President Joe Biden told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in their phone call, a senior administration official told CNN.

The US’s assessment tonight was that almost all of the drones and missiles – including more than 100 ballistic missiles -- launched by Iran had been knocked out of the sky. No cruise missile made impact, the official said, and nothing of “value” was hit.

Bolton: 'Passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake'

From CNN's Heather Chen

John Bolton, the former US national security adviser and ambassador to the UN, said “passivity at this point for Israel would be a big mistake,” warning of more attacks.

“This is not time to play academic games and message and signal. This is a question of power,” Bolton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. "If they came from a different location containing nuclear warheads, Israel might not be so lucky.”

A known Iran policy hawk, Bolton served in senior national security positions during the Trump and Bush administrations. A neoconservative, Bolton has in the past advocated war with Iran and a pre-emptive strike on North Korea.

In 2022, he was the target of an alleged assassination attempt orchestrated by a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He has warned against underestimating Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran has said is for peaceful purposes only.

“I think we have enough experience with faulty intelligence by now, not to be so sure, not to know how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is really being conducted under a mountain in North Korea,” Bolton said.

If Tehran sent “a wire transfer to Pyongyang,” it would give the North Koreans “enough time to put a couple of warheads on an airplane and fly them to Tehran. (But) if you take away their nuclear capability, that would be a dramatic hit to the regime, maybe enough to topple it.”

Israel's war cabinet, chaired by Benjamin Netanyahu, meets in Tel Aviv to discuss the drone attack launched by Iran.

Iran missile and drone attack on Israel – what we know so far

Israel’s military has reported minor damage after Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles towards it late on Saturday

  • Iran attack on Israel – live updates
  • Full report: Iran launches drones and cruise missiles against Israel

Iran launched hundreds of drones as well as cruise missiles towards Israel , in the Islamic Republic’s first ever direct attack on the Jewish state, in response to the 1 April strike on an Iranian diplomatic building in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which killed a senior figure in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards and eight other officers.

Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet, said that Israel will exact a price from Iran in response to its mass missile and drone attack when the time is right. His comments came ahead of a war cabinet meeting alongside Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the country’s defence minister, Yoav Gallant.

Tehran has warned it will strike again with greater force if Israel or the US retaliate for the Iranian strike on Israel by more 300 drones and missiles on Saturday night. The air raids , the Islamic Republic’s first ever direct attack on the Israeli state, brought a years-long shadow war into the open and threatened to draw the region into a broader conflagration as Israel said it was considering its response.

However, the attack, mostly launched from inside Iran, caused only modest damage in Israel as most were shot down with the help of the US, Britain and Jordan. An air force base in southern Israel was hit, but continued to operate as normal and a seven-year-old child was seriously hurt by shrapnel. There were no other reports of serious damage. Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm Daniel Hagari said that 99% of the launches had been intercepted.

Most of the Iranian drones flying over Syria’s airspace during Tehran’s strikes overnight were downed by Israeli and US jets before reaching their targets in Israel, two western intelligence sources told Reuters .

The UN security council will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday at the request of Israel’s ambassador to the UN, the council’s president said in a statement.

Iran informed Turkey in advance of its planned operation against Israel, a Turkish diplomatic source has told Reuters . The source also said that the US conveyed to Iran via Ankara that its operation must be “within certain limits”. These reports come after Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian , said in a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Tehran that Iran had informed the US that its attacks against Israel will be “limited” and for self-defence only.

John Kirby, the White House’s top national security spokesperson, told ABC’s This Week programme on Sunday that the US will continue to help Israel defend itself, but does not want war with Iran. “We don’t seek escalated tensions in the region. We don’t seek a wider conflict,” Kirby said. News outlet Axios reported that Joe Biden , the US president, had told Netanyahu that he would oppose an Israeli counterattack against Iran and that the prime minister should “take the win”.

UK Royal Air Force fighter jets and refuelling aircraft were also involved in Israel’s defence, taking off from bases in Cyprus. Their role, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, was to fill in for the US air force in the sorties against Islamic State normally carried out over Iraq and north-eastern Syria, but also to intercept Iranian drones if they came into the UK area of operations.

World leaders have condemned Iran’s attack, with regional powers including Saudi Arabia and Egypt calling for restraint. The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said: “I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation. I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.”

Jordan’s prime minister, Bisher Khasawneh , warned that any escalation in the region would lead to “dangerous paths”, joining a chorus of condemnation from world leaders to the attack. Other countries including the UK, Spain, the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and China, have called for restraint amid fears of a regional escalation of conflict across the Middle East. Iran’s foreign ministry has summoned the ambassadors of the UK , France , and Germany to question what it referred to as their “irresponsible stance” regarding Tehran’s retaliatory strikes on Israel, the semi-official Iranian Labour news agency reported .

Major airlines across the Middle East, including Emirates Airlines and Qatar Airways , announced they would resume some of their operations in the region after cancelling or rerouting some flights in response to Iran’s attack on Israel. Israel said it had reopened its airspace as of 7:30am local time on Sunday morning, with Beirut airport also reopening this morning. Several Iranian airports, including Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International, however, have cancelled flights until Monday.
