Travel Health Insurance
We are traveling to Italy and Greece for two weeks and we’re wondering which is the best and most cost effective travel health insurance? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
There is no best. There is only what works for you, with your particular circumstances. Start with an online broker like insuremytrip, squaremouth, or the insurancestore. There you can compare different policies to see which suits your needs.
if just health insurance check out GEO Blue. Don't know if they would cover what you need but it's worth the look
Think about what you want to cover as well. MedEvac? Will your insurance cover any medical bills overseas?
Some travel insurance is bundled with trip insurance which you may or may not want.
I purchased travel insurance through Expedia for our Paris trip this past March which included Health Insurance - roughly $91, per person. I try to never travel without it especially since COVID.
You first need to know what your current health insurance does or does not cover. When buying travel insurance, you usually get pre-existing condition coverage if your purchase the travel insurance with a few weeks of booking your first reservation, whether flight or hotel. Be aware of what reservations are cancelable and which are not. Know and screen shot/print your cancelation policies. There is a wealth of info on this Forum, so just search for travel insurance, and refine the Search, to get more recent info. Good luck!
To get you started, you might like to read this thread. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/budget-tips/minimal-travel-insurance
It does get more interesting as it goes on (!) as people discuss different insurance policies for various needs, medical evacuation, major trip interruption, etc. etc. medicare supplement for international travel.... You also have some (coverage for minor things like lost luggage) on whatever credit card you used to purchase your flights. Yes, there is a most cost effective way, but really only you can add it all up and decide! By the way, will you be traveling again internationally within a year? I realized an annual policy is more cost effective for multiple trips. So I chose GeoBlu Trekker Choice insurance, but you need to have a major US health care provider in order to qualify.
@ Sandancisco the major health insurance would that include Medicare and/ or Medicare extension plans if the extension plan is with a major health carrier?
Hi Joyce, I hope this answers your question, but if not I apologize, I'd suggest calling primary health care provider and get details! OK, I had read on another thread listed above, that HMO's offer an international supplemental medicare coverage , so I called Kaiser Permanente to check. THEY don't offer anything in addition to medical coverage at the time of injury/hospitalization . (I have NOT had to deal with them, so I don't know the specifics.) IDEALLY you should call into your HMO ASAP after you need urgent care abroad, and figure out the paperwork, the agent told me I could wait until I'm back in the US, but I think that's riskier.
So, back to basics, I'm glad I have a GeoBlue Trekker policy! Which requires that you have a primary health care provider in order to qualify. I have the multiple trip version. https://www.geobluetravelinsurance.com/products/multi-trip/trekker-5-overview.cfm
Here is the exact coverage specified by Medicare, if you don't have a provider who offers more, and basically the answer is 'no coverage overseas' if I'm reading this right. - https://www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/11037-Medicare-Coverage-Outside-United-States.pdf

We had a 50 foot Catamaran with 11 guests total so we all had plenty of space. The boat was immaculate with two bathrooms. Our captain Brandon and first mate Jackson were professional and made sure we all had a good time. The baths on Virgin Gorda were beautiful and Jackson guided us through the caves while giving us the history of the baths and lots of fun facts. After the baths we spent the afternoon at Soggy Dollar. Jackson was a great bartender and made sure we always had a drink. The snacks were great too! We are so glad we chose Stormy Pirates and will be booking with them again for future trips to the USVIs and BVIs. Read more Written April 21, 2024

We were well taken care of the whole day. I would recommend to anyone that wants a great experience. Price may be a bit more, but the boat you ride on makes all the difference for this day and we had plenty of room to stretch out and get sun. Also, the Punch is magnificent! - Stay06606912495 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Relaxing floating on the Caribbean The views were spectacular. We already had been at Maho bay but the sea life never disappoints and we saw probably one of the biggest turtles. Then we went to Christmas Cove. The ship wreck was pretty cool to see and the many coral reefs. We had pizza at this stop which was good. The captain and boat mate did a great job navigating and answering all our questions. Jackson kept our drinks filled and pointing things out along the way. Was nice sailing and soaking up the sun. Fun for all ages. Read more Written April 19, 2024

Fun crew, friendly fellow passengers, and beautiful waters make for a great day. Lime Out is always a winner with great tacos and drinks, then snorkeling Christmas Cove a highlight. - annecP2142JO 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing time We went on this charter yesterday 4/15/24 and had the best time!!! We were worried about how long it was, but it flew by! The crew were amazing! Captain Keith kept us safe and in the loop during the trip, he was great. His first mate, Maeve was AWESOME!! SO informative on all the islands we passed, walked us through on the tour through the baths and was kind enough to take the pictures during the tour as well. The drinks were refilled at all times, they give you fresh fruit and chips after the tour. Def listen to all the directions the guide gives you, as it can be tricky walking up and down the ladders, etc. The baths was one of the most beautiful things that my husband and I have seen. One for the books for sure! And we had a great time at White Bay! If you are questioning going on this tour, don't just book it! You will not regret going on it. Thanks Stormy Pirates for a great time and awesome crew! Read more Written April 15, 2024

I was particularly pleased with the communication from the company. They kept us updated on our bookings and made it really easy to know where we needed to be, what to bring, and all other necessary information. I will definitely go with them on our future trips around the Virgin Islands. Read more Written April 14, 2024
