Brisbane Riverfire is not just an event; it’s a spectacle of light, sound, and joy. It’s that one magical night when the city’s night sky is awash with vibrant fireworks, and what better way to bask in this dazzling display than aboard a Brisbane Riverfire Cruise ? Pack up your excitement and let’s sail through the ins and outs of planning the perfect family adventure on the river!
What Is Brisbane Riverfire?
Before we embark on our cruise details, let’s chat about what Riverfire is all about. Part of the larger Brisbane Festival, this iconic pyrotechnics show draws thousands of spectators yearly. It’s a tradition that signals the grand finale of three weekends filled with arts, music, and cultural festivities. And guess what? The Riverfire isn’t merely a visual treat; it’s accompanied by a soundtrack that’ll have your hearts thumping in unison.
Why Choose a Riverfire Cruise for Your Family?
Imagine avoiding the crowds, having comfy seating, and enjoying a clear view of the fireworks – sounds like a dream? Well, it’s a reality on a Riverfire cruise! You’ll have the luxury of witnessing the pyrotechnic miracles from the best vantage point – the river itself.
- Unobstructed Views: No more jostling for space or kids hoisted on shoulders; everyone gets a front-row seat to the action.
- Comfort and Convenience: With amenities at hand, there’s no need to worry about little legs tiring out or finding restrooms in a sea of people.
- Exclusive Experience: A cruise adds that special ‘wow’ factor, turning the night into an exclusive experience your family will remember for years to come.
Choosing the Right Cruise for Your Family
Not all cruises are created equal, especially when you’ve got kiddos to consider. Here’s what to keep an eye out for when selecting your vessel for the night:
- Child-Friendly Amenities: Look for cruises offering facilities like changing rooms, high chairs, and children’s menus — small comforts that can make a big difference.
- Type of Cruise: From luxury liners to more intimate vessels, there’s a range to suit your family’s style and budget.
- Duration of the Cruise: Consider bedtime routines and opt for a cruise timing that won’t turn your magical evening into a pumpkin hour.
Maximizing Your Riverfire Cruise Experience – Tips and Tricks
Okay, let’s make this cruise unforgettable! A little bit of planning goes a long way, and I’m here to sprinkle some insider tips for you:
- Arrive Early: Boarding times can be strict, and traffic is expected. Aim to be early to prevent any last-minute rushes.
- Layer Up: Evenings on the river can get chilly, especially for the little ones. Bring layers to ensure everyone’s comfy from start to finish.
- Pack Essentials: Think snacks, water bottles, and any must-haves to keep the kids happy. Being prepared never goes out of style!
Alrighty, isn’t this exciting? We’re about to dive deeper into planning your family’s memorable Brisbane Riverfire cruise. Stay with me as we cruise along and I shall reveal everything you need to know from booking your tickets to waving goodbye to a night filled with epic sparkles and warm family memories. So hold onto your captain’s hats – adventure awaits!

5 Essential Things Parents Should Know in Preparing for Brisbane Riverfire Cruise
There’s no denying that preparation is key, especially when you’re setting sail for a night packed with fireworks and family fun. Let’s walk through five essential things parents should know to ensure that their Brisbane Riverfire Cruise is smooth sailing:
1. Booking Your Tickets: Getting the Best Deal
Early Bird Gets the Worm: Riverfire cruise tickets can sell out faster than hotcakes, so it’s crucial to book early. This not only ensures your spot on the boat but often secures you an early-bird discount. Many cruise operators also offer family packages, so keep a lookout for deals that could save you some bucks.
2. Planning Your Journey: Transportation and Parking
Go Public or Carpool: Due to expected traffic congestion, public transport might be your best bet. If you’re driving, pre-book parking near the departing terminal, or better yet, carpool with another family to minimize the number of vehicles. Make sure you map out your route and have a backup plan in case of any delays.
3. What to Bring: The Ultimate Checklist
Pack Smart: In addition to the essentials like snacks and water, consider bringing glow sticks for the kids—it adds to the fun and helps you keep an eye on them. Binoculars can bring those high-flying fireworks up close, and don’t forget a fully charged camera or phone to capture the memories.
4. Safety on Board: Keeping Everyone Secure
Brief the Kids: Excitement can run high, but safety comes first. Have a chat with your little ones about staying within designated areas and following crew instructions. Always keep an eye on your children and stay together as a family during boarding and disembarking.
5. Dietary Considerations: Meals and Snacks
If there are any dietary restrictions or allergies, speak with the cruise company beforehand. Most are happy to accommodate special requests, but they’ll need a heads-up. Don’t rely solely on the onboard menu—packing some of your kids’ favorites is always a good backup.
Getting There and Back: After the Fireworks Fade
As the last spark fades in the night sky, it’ll be time to head home. Plan your exit strategy, as everyone will be leaving at the same time. Some patience will be needed, and remember, the kids will be tired, so a calm, organized departure will help end the evening on a good note.
With these priceless tips and mindful planning, your family’s Brisbane Riverfire Cruise is set to be an enchanting evening that combines the thrills of a sparkling spectacular with the warmth of family togetherness. Embrace this special occasion as an opportunity to create lifelong memories amidst the glimmer of Brisbane’s beautiful skyline. Remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about the journey there together. Happy cruising! ??

About this event
It's one of the best Fireworks displays of the year as Brisbane celebrates its annual River Festival with Riverfire 2024. The fireworks are always awesome and where better to enjoy them than from the bow and foredeck of the MV Baroness. This vessel boats the largest open-air foredeck and bow on the River. Even better - we lay out low-set beach chairs and picnic rugs on our white fordeck so guests can relax comfortably for the light show!
Frequently asked questions
Annually, Riverfire is the busiest night of the year on the River . All have to share a limited number of public pontoons so we all work together to stagger the collections. Additionally, we need to be in the Commercial zone by 6pm and we prefer to be early to get the best vantage point!
Northshore Hamilton Public Wharf is in a light industrial area near Eat Street. There is a large carpark nearby to service the City Cat Ferry and also lots of street parking.
We typically do not book a band or DJ for Riverfire as all the action is outside in the open-air. With the airforce plane fly-overs and the drone displays as well as the fireworks - we stick to playing some popular music over the vessel speakers and switch to TripleM for the Fireworks Soundtrack.
We don't mind you bringing bags of chips of lollies to enjoy but all drinks must be purchased onboard. We have a full service bar and offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There is a meal provided and an ice-cream for dessert.

Riverfire 2023: The best spots to watch the fireworks, how to get there, and when to catch the RAAF air show
It's that time of year again: Queensland's largest firework display, Riverfire, is set to light up the sky and kick off this year's Brisbane Festival with a bang.
When is Riverfire?
Saturday, September 2 from 4pm until 8pm .
Riverfire marks the start of Brisbane Festival, a three-week program of music, art and culture running from September 1 to 23.
When will the fireworks start?
Fireworks will run from 7:05pm to 7:25pm and will spark from rooftops, barges and bridges at 15 separate sites across the city.
A crew of 25 have been working hard to prepare more than 11 tonnes of fireworks for the show.
What time is the RAAF flyover?
The iconic flyovers will kick off with a C17A Globemaster at 5pm , followed by an EA-18G Growler at 5:15pm.
Practice flyovers were held on Friday — click through the gallery to view the pictures.

However, a display by the Army Tiger Helicopter has been cancelled.
Group Captain Bent Taylor said the army had elected not to participate in flying displays for "the time being" out of respect to those who lost their lives in recent military aircraft incidents in the Whitsundays and Tiwi Islands .
"While Army will not be participating in this year's Riverfire event, we look forward to being part of future events and flying demonstrations," he said.
"Army apologises to everyone who was looking forward to seeing the ARH, and asks for understanding at this difficult time for us and our friends from the United States Marine Corps."
You can watch the practice flyovers that were held on Friday in the Live Moment below.

If you missed the flyover, you can catch it again on Saturday
That's a wrap on our live coverage for today, but we'll leave you with these photos and videos from our reporters out and about around South Bank.
You can also watch it all again tomorrow — the iconic flyovers will kick off with a C17A Globemaster at 5pm , followed by an EA-18G Growler at 5:15pm.

There were cheers from crowds in Brisbane as the planes roared past
The ABC's Kenji Sato is out and about around South Bank.
Kenji: Scattered cheers erupted from the crowd as the C17 aircrafts thundered onto the scene about 20 minutes late. Tradies clad in hi-vis stood shoulder to shoulder with office workers along the Clem Jones Promenade as the jets roared overhead.
Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.
Where can I watch Riverfire?
The best spots to view the fireworks are:
- Kangaroo Point Cliffs
- Captain Burke Park
- Wilson Outlook Reserve
- City Botanic Gardens
- River Terrace at Kangaroo Point
- Victoria Bridge
- Dock Street, South Brisbane
- Howard Smith Wharves
As many as 500,000 spectators are expected to turn out for the show that is set to be the biggest yet.
The show will feature 25,000 fireworks and will be accompanied by a soundtrack curated by homegrown musicians Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nutall.
What else is happening?
Brisbane Festival Artistic Director, Louise Bezzina, says this year's Riverfire is more than just a spectacular firework show.
"There is a full suite of beautiful and free programming to be dazzled by on Saturday," she said.
Drone show to light up the night
This year will also see 400 drones take to the sky for a light show following the fireworks.
NIEERGOO: Spirit of the Whale drone show is directed by Traditional Owner and storyteller, Shannon Ruska.
The show will centre around the Queen's Wharf project and use light to bring to life Dreamtime stories from the Yuggera and Toorbul peoples.
The show will run at 7:45pm and 9:15pm on Saturday and again on Sunday evening at 7:15pm, 8:15pm and 9:15pm.
Brisbane's (latest) pedestrian bridge opens
The newly completed Neville Bonner Bridge will welcome 500 people to be the very first to walk across on Saturday morning.
"Riverfire brings the whole community together, it's one of our most iconic Brisbane events," says Ms Bezzina.
"I'm so excited to see the city come to life in such a beautiful way."
What roads will be closed?
More than 60 roads across the city will be closed on Saturday.
Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point are the most impacted suburbs, as well as Brisbane City and South Brisbane.
Here is the full list of road closures.
How should I get to Riverfire?
Translink will be operating many additional services on the day to assist movement throughout the city.
Free bus and train services to stations around South Bank and the city will run from 7:30pm to 9pm .
- Cultural Centre Station will be closed from 6pm on Saturday so make sure to hop off at South Bank station if you're planning to watch the show from the Festival Garden.
- The river will close from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Saturday, meaning no ferry services will be available between Mowbray Park and Milton terminals.
- QUT terminal will be closed from 4pm Saturday until Sunday morning due to its proximity to the fireworks.
What not to bring to South Bank
You cannot bring pets, scooters, bikes, drones, bottles with broken seals, glass, metal cutlery or alcohol into the South Bank Parklands.
