SHAPE – the Society for Heritage Architecture Preservation and Enhancement has created a map-leaflet and also 30 minute tour podcast to help visitors explore the beautiful of Roseau.

Around the island, you’ll will also discover many small wood-framed houses that are know as’Ti kaz’.

Also, a visit to the dwellings of Dominica’s indigenous kalinago Indians might be the highlight of the tour. These hut-like structures built of palm leaves, reeds and local materials give visitors a historical insight to the way the kalinago indians lived on the island.

6 Epic Things to do in Roseau Dominica (During a Cruise Stop!)

Dominica is known to be one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean Islands. Famous for its incredible scenery, spectacular forests, and volcanic peaks, it’s an island of contrasts and dramatic vistas, where sulfuric, boiling lakes heated by underground thermals tower above beautiful beaches.

The capital of this scenic Caribbean Island is Roseau, and it’s the perfect place to be based in order to explore this unique island to the full. But more than just a base, Roseau is a destination in its own right.

With ramshackle streets that were first laid down in the colonial days, museums and old markets to explore. It’s a colorful, cultural and intriguing place to visit on Dominica.

To help you plan your trip to Roseau and to Dominica, here is our ultimate guide to visiting the city and the island. From exploring museums to hiking volcanic peaks, every day there’s a chance to experience something new on Dominica.

Best Things to do in Roseau Dominica

Table of Contents

There are many great activities and sights to see in the city of Roseau and across the rest of the island of Dominica. Much of the charm of Dominica lies in the beautiful scenery, which is quite unlike many other places in the world, but there is also much to see and experience in the capital too.

View from Morne Bruce Roseau Dominica

1. Morne Bruce

When arriving in Dominica, the best thing to do first is to walk to the top of Morne Bruce, a small mountaintop that’s just outside of Roseau.

This is one of the best and most accessible viewing areas on the island, being just a short but steep walk to the summit, but offering incredible views over the city and the mountains behind to help you become easily orientated on the island.

Top Morne Bruce tours:

  • Roseau City Tour Including Botanical Gardens
  • Middleham Falls and Ti’tou Gorge Half-Day Excursion

Old Roseau Market

2. Old Roseau Market

Dominica’s old market in Roseau is an incredibly historic place. This was one of the major trading markets in the Caribbean, and unfortunately, was primarily used a slave-trading market for centuries.

Today, the market has found new life though as a center of arts and crafts on the island, showcasing local goods and giving traders and craftspeople a place to sell their unique cultural creations.

Champagne beach, Dominica

3. Champagne Beach

Just south of Roseau, can be found the strange yet beautiful spectacle of Champagne Beach. Off this beach, can be found a rich array of coral reefs and marine life, but what makes it special are the hot vents that continually emit volcanic gases, causing a weird ‘champagne’ effect as you swim or snorkel through the water.

Top Champagne Beach tour:

  • Mega Bite Volcano Snorkeling Tour

Roseau Botanic Gardens

4. Roseau Botanic Gardens

The Roseau Botanic Gardens are one of the most loved sights on the island. Established in the colonial days, these gardens are a source of life in the city, but also a reminder of the troubles the weather can cause here.

A devastating hurricane destroyed much of the gardens in the 1970s, and a large tree even fell on a school bus. The school bus and fallen tree are still on the grounds as a reminder of the fragility of island life during hurricane season.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park - Roseau Dominica

5. Morne Trois Pitons National Park

Dominica is famous for its natural, volcanic scenery, and the best place to experience this is in the magnificent Trois Pitons National Park. Named for the mountain peak, Morne Trois Pitons, which presides over the island, this is a spectacular area of beauty.

There are many hiking trails leading through different parts of the park, with many different difficulties and lengths.

Within the park are many beautiful waterfalls too, which are favorites among locals and visitors alike for their brilliant and refreshing plunge pools and year-round water, which make for a refreshing respite from the sticky, sweaty humidity of the surrounding forest.

The best waterfalls to travel to are the Emerald Pool, which is excellent for swimming and bathing, if a little frigid, and the large Middleham Falls, a long drop waterfall surrounded by lush green jungle

Volcanic Boiling Lake in Dominica, Caribbean Island

6. The Boiling Lake

The Boiling Lake is Dominica’s most incredible natural attraction, but also it is most dangerous. Found within the Trois Pitons National Park This huge freshwater lake is heated from below by the boiling gases produced by the violent volcanic activity below the surface of the island.

The lake is spectacular, but the hike there is an arduous 8-hour return slog, so it’s only for the fit and healthy. It’s well worth the effort to witness the continually boiling waters of this spectacle.

Roseau, Dominica Travel Planning Guide

Roseau, Dominica

Where is Roseau Dominica?

Dominica is a small island nation located in the eastern Caribbean, with the islands of Guadeloupe found to the north and Martinique lying to the south.

The eastern side of the island faces out over the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea while the western side faces out onto the stormier waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Roseau, the capital and largest city of Dominica, is found on the sheltered, southeastern side of Dominica.

Soufriere Bay, Dominica, Caribbean

How to Travel to Roseau Dominica

Traveling to Dominica is not as easy as traveling to other Caribbean islands in the region. Due to the rugged, volcanic nature of the island – which is the main reason many people visit! – the island has few suitable spots for airports.

The two airports on the island, one near Roseau in the south-east and the other in the northeast, one hour from Roseau along the coast, both have small runways that are only suitable for accommodating light aircraft from other regional islands.

To reach Roseau and Dominica, therefore it’s necessary to transit through other nearby Caribbean Islands. Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Martinique to name just a few, all have connections onto Dominica, and from there, it’s possible to fly further afield to more international destinations such as North America and Europe.

It’s also possible to arrive on the somewhat frequent ferries from neighboring Martinique and Guadeloupe, or of course, as is common in the Caribbean, via cruise ship.

Check out this guide if arriving by cruise ship:   Fodor’s Caribbean Cruise Ports of Call

Best Time to Visit Roseau Dominica

Dominica experiences a very stable, but hot, year-round temperature, with little to no fluctuations due to its southerly location near the equator.

There are just two different seasons, a dry and wet season, with the dry season running generally from December through to April and the wet season from May through to November.

The wet season is unpredictable and although some days the weather may be glorious, the next there may be violent storms.

Hurricanes have been known to hit the island too, especially during the Caribbean Hurricane Season, which coincides with the end of the wet season.

The dry season and particularly the period over Christmas and New Year, are the most popular and busiest times to visit, as the weather is great and many travelers from the north are looking for winter sun.

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Roseau Dominica

Where to Stay in Roseau Dominica

There is much accommodation to be found around the island, most of it on the low lying coastal regions, particularly on the more sheltered eastern side. Roseau has a great selection of hotels catering to different budgets and it’s a good choice for a stay on the island.

Here are a few great options to consider when planning your trip to Roseau Dominica.

  • Luxury hotel: Secret Bay
  • Mid-range hotel: Hibiscus Valley Inn
  • Budget hotel: Jacoway Inn
  • Hostel: Sea World Guest House

Ultimate Guide to Visiting Roseau Dominica

Language in Roseau Dominica

Although everything in Dominica appears named in the French language, the official language is, in fact, English, as the island was won by the British after it was first colonized by the French.

To confuse matters even more, many of the locals do still speak a French Patois dialect, although most will also speak excellent English too.

Roseau Dominica

Safety in Roseau Dominica

Dominica is a very safe island to visit within the Caribbean. Locals in the city and outside are all very friendly and welcoming, as there is an increasing reliance on tourism in the economy.

Always travel safely though, be careful of your belongings, especially on public transport, and in the rainy season, be careful in the mountains and on the roads.

Roseau Dominica Things to Do

Here Are 10 Amazing Things to do in Roseau Dominica

' src=

With a population of around 72,000 people and an abundance of nature and wildlife, Dominica is the perfect place to travel to when you want to “get away from it all.”  Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, Dominica (pronounced Do-mi-knee-ka) is a tiny island in the Lesser Antilles. The capital Roseau is a colorful city lined with colonial buildings and shops. It is one of the least populous capital cities in the Caribbean, with a population of just 16,582 people. The locals in Dominica are warm and friendly – perhaps it’s the small town vibe!

Dominica is still a relatively hidden gem.  You won’t find any huge chain hotels or all-inclusive resorts, but you will find more than enough activities to keep you occupied. The best part is that food and lodging are really affordable compared to the neighboring islands. Aside from the occasional cruise ship during high season, Dominica is generally unspoiled by mass tourism. Here are 10 things you must do in Roseau, Dominica:

The view of Roseau – I only came across one cruise ship in 4 days!

Stay at the Fort Young Hotel

Take a one minute walk from the marina of Roseau and you’ll find yourself at the steps of the Fort Young Hotel . This is the place to stay if you want to be in the heart of the city. The Fort Young Hotel manages to create a sense of seclusion for their guests, even in spite of it’s central location. Some highlights of the property include either a  a terrace or balcony in each room,  free wifi throughout the hotel,  rooftop jacuzzis, an oceanfront infinity pool, and a spa. With just 71 guest rooms and suites, a stay Fort Young will be an authentic and intimate experience in Roseau. Head to the activities desk if you want to book an excursion or a tour of any of the places on this list.

Eat at the Flamboyant Hotel

The last time I was in Dominica, I stayed at La Flamboyant Hotel , a boutique hotel also located in the heart of Roseau. Breakfast was included with my stay, which is how I discovered their restaurant! The menu at La Flamboyant’s restaurant reflects their commitment to creating cuisine with the freshest local herbs, vegetables, fruits and spices. Farm-to-table dining is not just a fancy buzzword in Dominica, it’s a way of life. The majority of restaurants rely heavily on the resources available on the island to serve food that is satisfying and delicious. At the Flamboyant Hotel quality ingredients are a top priority, with a focus on great customer service. Make sure you order a Kubuli, the unofficial national beer. The water used to make Kubuli is sourced from Dominica’s Loubière Springs and it’s one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted!

Go Fruit Tasting at the Water Bar

I loved the scenery! I could have easily spent a day there.

One of my favorite stops in Dominica was the Water Bar, which is like a wine tasting, but with fruit! Dominica is famous for it’s lush vegetation, and the island has the perfect conditions for growing a wide range of tropical fruits. A visit to the Water Bar is a sweet experience where you can order up a fresh juice and sample locally grown pineapples, sugar cane, watermelon oranges and coconuts. It’s located on the main road on the way to Trafalgar Falls. If you hire a tour guide or driver, ask them to stop by and they should know where to take you. Bring cash for tips or in case you’d like to order something from the bar.

Which fruit would you choose?

Explore the Emerald Pool

The Emerald Pool is only about 14 miles from Roseau, tucked away in a protected National Park World Heritage Site called Morne Trois Pitons National Park. A 15 minute walk through a lush rainforest will lead you to the Emerald Pool, which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a stunning 40 foot waterfall that pours into a grotto with a distinct green color. There is a paved staircase, so you don’t have to hike through a wild terrain to access it. Remember to bring your swimsuit if you want to swim, and cash for the entrance fee which is about 14 EC, or $5 USD. I also recommend a pair of sturdy swim shoes.

Visit Two Waterfalls in One at Trafalgar

Trafalgar Falls is a rare phenomenon with two towering waterfalls that flow parallel to one another. Once you arrive, the view is unforgettable. You have the “Daddy Falls” and on the right, and “Mommy Falls” on the left. Like the Emerald Pool, there is an entrance fee of $5 USD to access Trafalgar Falls but it’s totally worth it! If you plan on spending a few days in Roseau, you can purchase a weeklong pass to Dominica’s most popular sights for $12 USD. Trafalgar Falls is one of the most visited attractions on the island, so it’s recommended that you arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially if there is a cruise ship in Roseau that day.

Two waterfalls in one – amazing

Hike to a Boiling Lake

Did you know that Dominica is home to the world’s second largest boiling lake? Simply called the The Boiling Lake, this natural wonder is situated about 6.5 miles east of Roseau. The temperature at The Boiling Lake ranges from 180 to 197 degrees Fahrenheit, so don’t get to close! It’s a World Heritage site, and an experience you have to work for. This hot springs can only be reached at the end of a rigorous hike, and an experience tour guide is required. The hike involves a fair amount of elevation, so it is recommended that you be in good physical shape.

Shop at the Old Market

The Old Market of Roseau is the perfect place to pick up a souvenir. I am a huge advocate for purchasing locally sourced and handmade products, and Dominican vendors specialize in this. You’ll find fragrant soaps perfumed with the scent of local spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. You’ll also find crafts and objects like magnets and post cards. The market has a dark history as it was once a port that held slave auctions. Today it is a bustling hub for locals and tourists alike.  It’s a great place to start if you want to do a self guided walking tour of Roseau.

Head down to the river

The only other people at this river was a small family of Carib Indians – how much more “off the beaten path” can it get than that?!

One of the best ways to enjoy Dominica is to spend some time hanging out at one of it’s 365 rivers. Yes, you read that correctly – there is a river for every day of the year! Dominica’s longest river, the Layou, has several areas to bathe or even go tubing. You can get from point A to point B with public transportation, but if you really want to see the best rivers then you should hire a guide. They know where all the cool spots are! Roseau is located on the southwestern coast of Dominica, at the tip of the Roseau River. Some of the best rivers can be discovered by hiking, and there are over 300 miles of hiking paths that cover the island. Renting a car is also a fun way to discover roadside waterfalls and lakes.

Check out the Pirates of the Caribbean Film Locations

This is the Indian River where Pirates was shot – the boats have no motors so it’s really peaceful!

I’m a huge fan of Pirates of the Caribbean, so I was thrilled when I found out that the second installment of the film was shot on Dominica. One of the most recognizable spots is Titou Gorge, the canyon that captain Jack and his crew fell into while trying to escape the island. Located just off the main road and a short walk up a hill, it’s pretty easily accessible. The facilities are well maintained, with benches where you can leave your towels and restrooms. You must swim 200 ft to get from the entrance of the gorge to the end. There is a waterfall at the end of the canyon, and it’s beautiful but also freezing! The water is really deep, so don’t hesitate to rent a life jacket for a few dollars at the tables out front. Another film spot that will rock your world is the Indian River. Even if you’ve never seen Pirates of the Caribbean, you’ll be impressed with this idyllic boat ride. You’ll also spot Tia Dalma’s house!

Go Island Hopping

This is Martinique , which is only a short boat ride away

I hope you’ve enjoyed this list! Dominica is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited, and one that I believe should be on the top of everyone’s Caribbean travel list!

Great post, my family and I are from Dominica but I live in London. It really is the nature island of the Caribbean.

The best part about going there is the FOOD and the fact that it is not overrun with tourists, I can’t wait to go back at the end of the year!

I did not now that Pirates of the Caribbean was shot here. I would like to hike to the boiling lake. 180 degrees is hot!. Fruit tasting sounds interesting, too. Marking this in my list, but not bucket list.

Dominica is one of the few spots in the Caribbean that we have not yet visited. So good to know that Roseau retains the small town vibe. Nice that the cruise ships have not yet invaded this spot. I would definitely want to try the farm to table fare at the Flamboyant Hotel. The waterfalls and Emerald Pool would draw us to visit. Good to know I really don’t need to hike through wild terrain. Thanks for letting me know that we could visit by ferry from someplace like St Lucia. That is easy to get to from Toronto.

Hmmm, never heard of the tiny island of Dominica. What a spectacular place! It reminds me a lot of Kawai, which is also blessed with rivers and waterfalls. I love the lookout point for Daddy Falls and Mommy Falls. I had no idea The Pirates of the Caribbean has been filmed here. Not surprised though. This island is so beautiful.

I think this is the first time I heard about fruit tasting actually being a thing and integrated in a business. Not surprising for this very tropical destination! I would also love to taste all the local fruits they have. Even bring it in the waterfalls or the swim in the river!

5 Amazing Things to Do in Roseau, Dominica’s Colourful Capital

Share this Post:

Most people are likely drawn to Dominica for its natural delights rather than its urban attractions, but in my opinion it’s worth spending at least a couple of hours in quaint and colourful Roseau before venturing into the heart of the island.

With a few pretty examples of historical architecture , some beautiful Botanical Gardens and a fantastic view from Morne Bruce Hill, there certainly are some good reasons to stick around for a bit. Here’s a list of five things you shouldn’t miss while in Roseau.

This post may contain affiliate links, and I might earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. For more info, click here .

Guided Tour of Roseau and Trafalgar Falls

If you don’t have a lot of time to spend in Roseau or prefer the company of a knowledgeable guide, you might consider taking a guided tour of the city. This one has great reviews and not only includes a sightseeing tour of the city and the Botanical Gardens, but also a trip to the nearby Trafalgar Falls . Have a look at some other options below:

5 Amazing Things to Do in Roseau

Hike to the top of morne bruce hill.

The one thing in Roseau you shouldn’t miss is the climb up Morne Bruce hill, which sits to the east of the city centre. Named in honour of James Bruce, who planned the island’s fortifications in the 18 th century, the viewing platform at the top affords some great panoramic views of the city and bay.

A cannon looking out over a city on Morne Bruce Hill in Roseau, Dominica

We also stumbled across some interesting vestiges from the past up here, including a few ruined buildings and some picturesquely overgrown cannons. More Bruce can be reached by road, but the nicer (albeit more strenuous) alternative is climbing up a footpath called Jack’s Walk , which starts at the northern end of the Botanical Gardens.

Roseau Botanical Gardens

Roseau’s pleasant Botanical Gardens are a great place to spend a relaxing hour or two. You can check out Dominica’s National Flower (the colourful Bwa Kwaib ) as well as plenty of other local flora. Two aviaries in the northern section hold noisy imperial Amazon and red-necked Amazon parrots , which are native to the island.

Close to the southwestern gate are the remains of a school bus crushed by a Baobab Tree (fortunately while no one was inside) during Hurricane David in 1979. A dramatic reminder of the potentially devastating effects of tropical storms in the Caribbean. The Botanical Gardens lie directly to the east of the town centre and there’s no entrance fee.

King George V. Street and the French Quarter

This is central Roseau’s oldest quarter, which features some interesting colonial architecture , and is definitely worth at least a short stroll. Many of the historic wooden buildings sport some intricately carved balconies , and all of them are painted in pretty pastel colours.

roseau dominica walking tour

Some smaller alleyways in the quarter offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the residents. We particularly enjoyed the small Fields lane , which runs parallel to King George V. Street, Roseau’s main thoroughfare.

Old and New Roseau Market

Roseau’s historic Old Market is located at the southwestern end of King George V. Street. Today it mostly deals in crafts and is a good place to stock up on souvenirs at the end of your trip.

Roseau’s New Market on the other hand is still a very much active produce market . There are plenty of stalls selling fruit and vegetables, as well as a small fish market. Located at the northwestern end of the harbour, we found it to be a nice place to mingle with the locals.

Roseau’s Harbour Area

While not the most picturesque harbour area in the Caribbean, Dame Eugenia Charles Blvd. features some interesting architecture and smaller historical attractions. Fort Young hotel, at the eastern end of the boulevard, was build on top of the older ramparts of Roseau’s Fort , which still can be seen around its foundations.

roseau dominica walking tour

Nearby Peebles park, though small, is a nice place to take a break, while on the western end of the boulevard you’ll find the Old Barracoon , where slaves used to be imprisoned before being auctioned off – A grim reminder of Dominica’s colonial past.

Other Things in Roseau to Check Out

Roseau’s Gothic Cathedral is impressive from the outside, but unfortunately was closed when we were in the city. So was the small Dominica Museum , which is reputedly worth a visit, yet we can’t give you any first-hand information on that.

If you’re in the vicinity of Independence Avenue, you should visit Fran’s Pâtisserie, and try the amazing fruit tarts. Also, if you happen to travel during February or the early March, it’s worth checking the carnival dates . It’s a fun and gaudy affair, and definitely worth dropping by for.

All the places mentioned above can be found in this map of Roseau.

Practicalities

How to get to roseau.

As Dominica’s capital and biggest city, Roseau is usually just a minibus-ride away from most places on the island. Routes along the coast (especially between Roseau and Portsmouth ) tend to be served more frequently than those in the interior, where you might have to wait a little longer (or simply hitch-hike).

For information on interisland boat travel from Roseau’s ferry terminal, check out my guide .

The Best Hotels in Roseau

We stayed at Ma Bass Guesthouse , which is clean, centrally located and run by the very sweet lady it’s named after. They don’t have a website, but you can call them at +1 767-448-2999. St. James Guesthouse also comes recommended as a good-value budget choice.

Apart from that, there are plenty of midrange hotels (e.g. Sutton Place Hotel ), while the historic Fort Young Hotel would be a more luxurious option. You can check the map above more places to stay.

Where to Go Next

Soufrière or Scott’s Head , great bases for hiking and snorkeling

Trafalgar, Wotten Waven and Morne Trois Pitons National Park , home to the unique Boiling Lake

Portsmouth , home to the mysterious Indian River and historic Fort Shirley

Not much to see

I was just listening to a free podcast of a walking tour of it and the history sounds really interesting.

Only island I have ever been on and felt unsafe

Whoa, that's rather alarming! Good to know!!

30,000+ Club

We've been in Dominica several times and never felt unsafe.

Not much to see but easy to walk around town on your own.

The Ft. Young Hotel is interesting. Actually was a real fort.

Still have cannons, etc. in place.

They have a nice bar/restaurant area. Many business locals have lunch there. :)

Maybe in the daylight and you are fit and do not look like an easy [emoji457].

Be careful where you wander.

Is a very poor Island with high unemployment. Would suggest a organized tour, ship or private.

I've found a guided walking tour through SHAPE (Society for Heritage Architecture Preservation & Enhancement)! It's $15 US per person for a 90 minute tour. On Wed Jan 4, she's able to do a tour at 10:30 am. Anyone else interested in joining us that day?

Wherever we walked we were followed and hounded to buy drugs. On our tour bus, wherever it stopped, they came running over for the same thing. It was almost as bad as the beaches of Acapulco .

Gosh, that sounds more like a port stop we had a while back in the Dominican Republic rather than in Roseau, Dominica.

They did sell fresh Sour Sop at the fruit stands though

I had quite the opposite experience. I spent a few hours just moseying about Roseau. It is my favorite city in the Caribbean because no one seemed to have any interest in me as a tourist. There were very few places selling tourist trinkets. I thought it was a very vibrant and interesting commercial hub. A totally different scale and pace than NY or Miami but a really culturally rich town. I chatted with locals, had a bite of curried goat, took a couple hundred pictures and bought a bottle of Havana Club rum for half the price they were getting in Aruba. I was a fifty something white guy, all by myself and never once felt threatened or unsafe.

DW and I were there a year ago and like MrSchwump thoroughly enjoyed our port stop in Roseau. We left the ship and arranged a beach excursion by bus with one of the locals. Easy peasey. When we returned we wandered through the port area. The port area was fairly new then. It never crossed our minds to be concerned for our safety.

Wow!! After having been there 6 times on a ship and stayed over 20 nights (in 2 trips - once over Carnival) on this amazing island, and I nor my husband have ever been offered drugs once. We must look like total prudes or we look like we know where to find what we are looking for. To be honest, we tend to get out of the city except to eat (Perky's Pizza is the best pizza I have ever had - how the Pizza Hut survives I will never understand) and shop. It is called the Nature Island for a reason - it is so astoundingly rugged and beautiful. Some day, I do want to go into the cathedrals; maybe the next time we fly in.

Is the island poor, yes. Do you need to be aware as you do anywhere in the world, yes. Have I ever felt unsafe in Roseau? Never. The buildings need some paint, but when you take into account the horrible storms that pummel this little island nation, and the lack of funds to do the less than absolutely necessary repairs, the city looks pretty good - the bones of the buildings are amazing. Looks and feels like home every time we step foot on land.

The 8 best things to do on Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica is a paradox. The island nation, which forms part of the Lesser Antilles in the Eastern Caribbean Sea, is an unhurried respite for those looking to disconnect from life's chaos.

But the mountainous terrain of deep gorges, riotous verdant foliage, endless trails and bountiful rivers also make it an adventurer's playground .

Don't expect a large swath of sprawling luxury beach resorts and bone-white sand beaches. Dominica's secret sauce lies in its untouched, raw qualities, earning the island its moniker “the nature isle.” To help you plan your getaway, here's our guide to the best things to do in Dominica .

Central America, Caribbean, Lesser Antilles, Dominica island, Salybia, Caribbean, Carib Territory, Kalinago Barana Aut? (the Caribbean village by the sea), a large village of Kalinagos Indians, dedicated to the development and sharing of their traditional

1. Immerse yourself in the Kalinago culture

The Kalinagos are the descendants of the pre-Columbus indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles who lived solely on what nature provided.

There are approximately 3000 Kalinagos who live on the 3,700 acres of communally held land reserved for the tribe on the eastern side of Dominica. The tribe is led by a six-member council and a chief.

Immerse yourself in the enduring history, rituals and customs of the island's first inhabitants thanks to a collection of tours committed to creating authentic connections to the Kalinago culture.

These tours also generate income for members of the community. The experiences range from half-day excursions to home stays with a family on the reserve in traditional housing or ajoupas  made from wood and leaves.

Local Tip: Try the roasted crayfish with coconut milk served on a warmed balisier (heliconia) leaf and sip on ouicou juice extracted from grated cassava.

Dominica, Boiling Lake Hike

2. Visit Boiling Lake

Dominica's Boiling Lake is a well-trodden landmark but worth the fanfare. The journey to the flooded fumarole starts in Laudat, a small village tucked away in the island's interior.

Depending on your hiking skill level, it will take about two to four fours before you ultimately descend upon the world's second-largest boiling lake (at 200ft wide).

The trail is deceptively manageable, but a guide is highly advised to help navigate the occasionally rocky and muddy terrain and paper-thin ridge.

The lake is a bubbling hot cauldron of slate grey liquid, shrouded in vapor. As is typical of any arduous, extended journey, you'll be pleased to know that the return trip seems much quicker.

Planning Tip: Refill your water bottle at the Breakfast river, which is the only fresh water available after the hike begins.

Caribbean, Dominica Island, hikers on segment 13 of the Waitukubuli National Trail in the north of the island between Pennville and Capuchin

3. Hike parts of the Waitukubuli National Trail

Did you really visit Dominica if you didn't hike a portion of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT)? The iconic trek is 114 miles, spanning the island's length from the northernmost Scott's Head and snaking through the dramatic mountainous landscape and dense rainforest to Cabrits National Park .

WNT is the only long-distance hiking trail in the Caribbean . Each of the trail's 14 segments presents its unique challenges so if you're not up for the entire route, pick one or more sections to explore.

The difficulty level of the trail's segments varies from easy, family-friendly fun to a more strenuous expedition. Hiking the trail is a serious time commitment — the entire route takes two weeks to complete.

But it's the ultimate scenic excursion, meandering through waterfalls, rivers, Kalinago villages, Maroon passages and multiple other historical and natural sites.

It’s always best to hire a guide or join a hiking group.

Planning Tip: With 365 rivers woven throughout the island, running into one during a hike is inevitable. Proceed cautiously — you may encounter slippery rocks or flash flooding from heavy rainfall.

Volcanic Air Bubbles at Champagne Beach, Caribbean Sea, Dominica

4. Dive into the effervescent Champagne Reef

Diving into Champagne Reef mirrors the sensation of swimming in an oversized glass of the bubbly drink thanks to the volcanic gas bubbling up from the seabed. The golden hue of the actual reef completes the illusion.

Snorkeling enthusiasts will also be enamored with the burst of color reflecting from the horde of sea creatures — including trumpet fish, parrotfish, frogfish, octopus, rays, batfish, hawksbill turtles and seahorses.

The vibrance of the pink azure, red rope, yellow tube, and purple vase sponges adds to the kaleidoscopic effect.

Planning Tip: Large pebbles dot the Champagne Reef beachfront, so don't expect to lay out on the sand. But do enjoy the local rums, Dominican cuisine and intel on the best snorkeling spots at Donny's Beach Bar .

Sulphur Springs at Trafalgar Falls, Morne Trois Pitons national Park, Dominica, Caribbean.

5. Spend a day at Trafalgar Falls

Dominica's twin falls are a mere 20-minute drive from the capital Roseau , to the west of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park .

A brief 10 to 15-minute walk through the rainforest leads to a viewing platform where you can embrace the majesty of the falls. Locally known as "Papa" (to the left) and "Mama" (to the right); each has its distinct features.

Papa towers over the surroundings at 125ft while Mama is a diminutive 75ft but with a more forceful gush of water. Consider a dip in the warm pools at the base of the falls.

A guide is necessary if you intend to hike the falls. Be extremely careful because slippery boulders can make for a treacherous and challenging climb. Head out as early as possible for optimal lighting.

Local Tip: Wildlife and rare plant lovers should consider a pit stop at Papillote Tropical Gardens, just before the trailhead.

6. Lounge on Pointe Baptiste beach

Much has been made of Dominica's tour de force of 365 rivers. But for an aquatic getaway, Pointe Baptiste beach is a worthy contender. Drive to the village of Calibishie on the island's northeast coast to this secluded haven that offers an opportunity to unwind in peace.

The water is shallow, warm and tranquil, which makes it ideal for kids. However, couples still have enough privacy thanks to the surrounding stones and Red Rocks. This natural auburn rock formation hugs the northeastern coastline and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

Local Tip: Explore the sweeter side of Dominica at the nearby Pointe Baptiste Estate Chocolate Factory . The small family operation takes visitors through a tour of the process that transforms cacao beans into flavorful chocolate bars.

Emerald Pool

7. Experience the Emerald Pool

Dominica is carpeted in shades of green, from the dense forests to the luminescent and appropriately named Emerald Pool . A gush of fresh water from a 40ft waterfall feeds the ethereal grotto. Its greenish tint reflects the foliage, vines and moss-covered rocks that envelop the area, allowing sunlight to filter through.

The road to Emerald Pool starts in Pont Cassé, a small centrally located village and continues inside the Morne Trois Piton National Park. It's easily accessible.

Hop a local minibus and let the driver know where you’re going. There's also plenty of parking if you decide to drive yourself.

Two viewing platforms provide a magical vantage point, but if you prefer to swim, bathrooms and changing rooms are also available at the visitors center. You might recognize the oasis as one of the stunning backdrops in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The water is chilly, even on the hottest days. The water is also not very deep, so don't jump off the higher rocks or dive in.

Local Tip: Venture about 15 minutes away to nearby Castle Bruce and enjoy a sumptuous meal and drinks from the Islet View Restaurant & Bar overlooking the bay.

8. Explore the streets of Roseau

Roseau is a small, compact southwestern city surrounded by Morne Bruce, the Caribbean Sea, and the Roseau River. Get to know the quaint capital with a walking tour of the significant sites.

Start with the Old Market , which was once a bustling trading post in colonial times. Now it has been reimagined into a craft hub where vendors ply handmade soaps, oils, accessories and fragrant spices. The Dominica Museum shares the seafront, with historical and cultural artifacts curated by the island's foremost historian Lennox Honychurch.

The once thriving Dominica Botanical Gardens suffered extensive damage at the hands of Hurricane David in 1979 but still boasts 40 acres featuring 50 types of plant life. Make the hike up Morne Bruce to soak in the stunning panoramic views of the city and cool down later at one of the local haunts with the hometown beer Kubuli.

Planning Tip: Consider purchasing a budget-friendly special tourist site pass. A weeklong pass with multiple visits to all sites within the national park system and several other nature landmarks costs USD$12.

roseau dominica walking tour

Historic Roseau

Visit a city where time loses meaning.

The capital city, Roseau, is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the Roseau River, and Morne Bruce and is built on the site of the ancient Kalinago Indian village of Sairi. The quaint town has a picturesque array of 18th-century French architecture and is small enough to be easily explored on foot.

The oldest part of town is around Old Market Square, formerly the original slave market. The Old Market Square is now a vibrant craft vendors’ market for cruise ships and other visitors. The Old Post Office building is now the home of the Visitors’ Information Center, and the Dominica Museum which showcases a small collection of artifacts tracing the island’s history. The Roseau Cruise Ship berth sits across from the Museum and cruise visitors walk off the ships directly into the city for shopping and tours.

Notable sites around Roseau include The New Market on the Riverbank, which displays fresh tropical fruit, vegetables, and herbs. The Roseau Market is liveliest on Saturday mornings but is open all day and through the night from Friday to Saturday.

Morne Bruce is located just above the Botanical Gardens, which offers a panoramic view of the entire city and is a favorite of cruise visitors. Other historic sites include the Fort Young Hotel, Anglican Church relics, the President’s Office (state house), the Carnegie Library relics, the Cenotaph, and the slave monument, all on Victoria Street.
