Woman in Monument Valley during a Navajo guided tour, Utah, USA

Take a ten-day road trip from the glitzy hub of Las Vegas to the trendy San Francisco, stopping at national parks, deep canyons, fascinating landscapes and small towns along the way. Start with Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon hikes, kayak across Lake Powell, discover the iconic Monument Valley with a Navajo guide then hit the famed Grand Canyon for an epic sunset and a walk along the rim. Visit the Kelso Dunes and hear them sing, then visit the towering sequoias – some of the oldest trees on Earth! Your last stop is the incredibly diverse lands of Yosemite National Park, where you’ll stargaze with a local naturalist and walk the best trails with an expert trip leader.

Trip overview

  • Marvel at one of the nation’s greatest national parks, The Grand Canyon, and walk along the rim, hike into the canyon or just soak up the expansive views.
  • Kayak across the waters of Lake Powell, weaving your way past fascinating rock formations as your leader shares stories of the lake’s history.
  • Hike through the varied landscapes of Zion National Park, taking in views of massive canyon walls and red sandstone cliffs as you go.
  • Learn about the culture and history of Monument Valley during a Navajo guided tour, followed by a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch.
  • Experience world-famous Yosemite National Park, taking in the breathtaking scenery as well as the pristine night sky as you go on leader-led walks both day and night.
  • Walk among the towering timber of Sequoia National Park and see General Sherman, the world’s largest tree by volume, along with the other soaring sequoias that make up the Giant Forest.
  • Some of the best scenery in Yosemite, Zion and Sequoia is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities. You’ll also need to be prepared with hiking shoes, a water bottle and a day pack.
  • You’ll be travelling to desert and mountainous regions where the temperature can vary greatly from day to night. Make sure you pack the appropriate clothing for all weather.
  • This trip includes time spent travelling in a vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Welcome to Las Vegas! The real wild west is home to some of the USA’s most incredible scenery. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 8 am. Then, you’ll hop aboard a private van. Get to know each other over a picnic lunch, then venture into the stunning landscapes of Zion National Park. Join your leader for a guided hike, then spend the night in Springdale – known as the gateway to the park.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Zion National Park - Walks

Please make your own way to the hotel lobby to meet your leader at 8 am this morning. It’s recommended you append an extra day or two in Vegas so you have plenty of time to get there.

Your total travel time today is approximately 3 hours.

The exact trail we hike in Zion will depend on the group's interest and ability, and will typically be either the Emerald Pools trail, or the Watchman trail. The hiking is easy to moderate with a distance of approximately 3 miles/4.8 km with 350 ft/107 mt of elevation gain.

After breakfast this morning, it’s time to make tracks for Bryce Canyon National Park – make sure your camera is ready to go, as some of the views you’ll come across today are truly out of this world! Take a short drive in your private vehicle, then spend the morning hiking through the epic landscapes of the park. Walk along the canyon rim and marvel at hundreds of unique sandstone towers, known as hoodoos, that jut out from the natural amphitheatre. Relax while you enjoy a picnic lunch and take in your magnificent surroundings, then hike down into the canyon for a closer look at the fascinating hoodoos. Then, drive on to the town of Page, where you’ll spend the night.

  • Bryce Canyon - Leader-led Walk

Your total travel time today is approximately 5 hours.

Today's hiking distance is 3 miles (4.8 km) with 450 feet (137 m) of elevation gain.

Bryce Canyon is situated at 8000 ft (2440 m) above sea level. You can expect cooler temperatures, thinner and dryer air than elsewhere on this trip. Make sure you stay hydrated while hiking in the park.

Journey south this morning, driving through more spectacular scenery before arriving at Lake Powell. This gorgeous reservoir is certainly a sight to behold from the shore but to really appreciate it, you’ve got to get on the water. Jump in a kayak and paddle across the water’s surface, weaving your way through remarkable rock formations while your leader regales you with stories of the lake’s history. Back on dry land, set out for a gentle walk along Horseshoe Bend, taking in beautiful views with every step. This afternoon there is an option to visit Antelope Canyon before returning to Page for the evening.

  • Horseshoe Bend Visit
  • Lake Powell - Kayaking
  • Page - Antelope Canyon Tour - USD70

You will get wet during the kayaking excursion, therefore we recommend wearing a swimsuit and water shoes/sandals, or bring a change of clothes and shoes with you on this day.

During November and December, you may be unable to kayak on Lake Powell. There will be a local slot canyon walk included when kayaking is not possible. This hike does involve soft sand, stairs and ramps, so it’s best to wear closed-toe shoes.

ANTELOPE CANYON: Since this tour is very popular and tends to sell out, we recommend you pre-book your space. You can book any time slot 2pm or later. Please book the Lower Antelope Canyon Hiking Tour here: https://www.antelopelowercanyon.com/tours/

Start the day with a drive to Monument Valley – one of the world’s most iconic sights. If this landscape dotted with towering sandstone buttes looks familiar to you, it’s no surprise – Monument Valley has been the filming location for many famous Western films. More importantly, this is the native land of the Navajo. When you arrive, you’ll transfer from your vehicle to a 4WD and enjoy a Navajo-guided tour of Monument Valley, where you’ll have the chance to learn more about their rich culture and history in the area before sitting down to a traditional homecooked, family-style Navajo lunch. Continue your journey onto the iconic Grand Canyon for some awe-inspiring walks along the rim.

  • Monument Valley - Navajo guided 4x4 Jeep tour including traditional lunch

We aim to experience either sunset or sunrise at the Grand Canyon rim, depending on season. During spring and fall when the sun sets earlier and rises later we typically visit for sunrise on Day 5. During the summer months we visit for sunset on Day 4.

This morning it's time to return to Las Vegas, but first we'll make a stop along Historic Route 66. You’ll have another welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight to meet your new group and leader. Later, maybe head out for dinner with the members of your new group to get to know each other.

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours.

This is a combination trip, meaning your trip leader and group will most likely change today.

Leaving Sin City in your dust, you’ll road trip across state lines and through the Mojave Desert today, on the way to Mojave National Preserve. Stopping at the Kelso Dunes, you’ll feel a world away from the bright lights of Sin City. The dunes are known for their singing sand which produces a deep, eerie sound. To get the full effect, shove off as much sand as possible from the crest of a dune that hasn’t been walked on for a while and feel the boom in your bones. You’ll then set off around the southern Sierras to Sequoia National Park, settle into your accommodation near the park and head out for an included dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Mojave National Preserve - Kelso Dunes hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

Today is simply about seeing the best of the USA’s Sequoia National Park. You’ll embark on leader-led walks around Sequoia, driving from stop to stop as you get to feel small next to the staggering size of General Sherman, the Giant Forest and other specimens of Sequoia’s towering timber. You may even drive through a tree at Tunnel Log, peer into Tharp’s Log and spot marmots, black bears and recently re-introduced bighorn sheep.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Sequoia National Park

After breakfast, you’ll hit the highway headed for the world-famous Yosemite National Park. To start, get acquainted with the awe-inspiring Yosemite Valley during a guided hike. Strewn with dramatic waterfalls, gigantic granite outcrops and lush meadows, this is one of the most spectacular spots in the country. Your leader will also teach you about the ecologically diverse landscape along the way. After sunset, you’ll join a Naturalist from the Yosemite Conservancy for a guided stargazing program. The park’s minimal light pollution makes it an excellent place to see the stars while learning about astronomy, constellations and local lore.

  • Yosemite National Park - Stargazing with Yosemite Conservancy Naturalist
  • Yosemite National Park - Entrance Fee
  • Yosemite National Park - Leader-led hike

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Today, Yosemite is all yours to explore! In the morning there’ll be leader-led walks around some of the park’s best trails. If it’s a clear day you may also drive up to Glacier Point for a view you won’t soon forget, looking down over the valley and across to the iconic Half Dome. The afternoon is yours to fill how you’d like. You might choose to hike along the breathtaking Mist Trail with its many fabulous views, hire a bicycle and pedal along some of the 12 miles of designated (and flat) path or immerse yourself in the park’s history at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Once you’ve seen the sights, the day will be capped off with a pizza picnic in the park for dinner.

  • Yosemite - Pizza Picnic Dinner

After saying fond farewells to Yosemite, you’ll head west to vibrant San Francisco. After stopping to do a walk over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, your adventure finishes in San Francisco. No accommodation is provided for tonight, but if you do wish to spend extra time in the City by the Bay, just speak to your booking agent. There’s plenty to keep you busy, whether it’s shopping along the funky Haight Street or making your own escape over to Alcatraz Island.

  • San Francisco - Golden Gate Bridge walk

This trip doesn't allow time to visit Alcatraz, so you'll need to make your own arrangements if you want to see the island prison. Tickets must be booked in advance, as they sell out quickly and numbers are limited.

Very good trip. Tour guide and coach driver were excellent. Accommodations were great. I would recommend this trip to others. Except, I would not recommend going to the trip sponsored dinner at the Happy Girl Coffee House in Monterey. The food was just awful in my opinion. Best place for dinner that night would at one of the seafood restaurants at be Fisherman's Warf located right in back of the hotel.

Best of the West (12 Days)

The tour was good, the destination highlights were amazing! The hotels were good, but sometimes outside towns so there was nothing to do and not much choice for food- a bit disappointing. Breakfast not included. The guide was good, driver amazing! There was a lot of extras to choose from, so spent more than originally anticipated this will cost, especially with tips!

American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days) Tour

American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days)

The Tour Director and driver were first class, keeping us both very amused, and very safe. Some of the downsides were due to the weather, at times, which nothing could be done about, so we got on with it. Some of the main downs were due to my naivety, in thinking some facilities (like cash paying taxis from SLC airport; I persuaded a friendly Uber driver to accept cash!) were what I was used to, and that I wouldn't have to re-enter security when changing planes from LHR to SLC, at PHX, even though I was on a connecting, booked, flight, and my baggage had already been labelled for both airports appropriately, at LHR. Altogether, a very good, and memorable holiday, where I visited some parts of the Parks that I visited before, but saw many more, and different sights in them.

San Francisco & Yosemite Express 3D/2N (From Los Angeles)

The tour was good, my personal preference would have been to spend more time in San Francisco, doing the iconic things like a trolley car ride and an Alcatraz tour, rather than the random stops along the way. Our tour guide was great - however, right at the end of the tour - when I reached my destination - it was not the hotel that I was informed it was going to be, and both the tour guide and the driver couldn't get out of there quick enough, so I felt stranded...luckily I had been following where we were headed on my phone's GPS, otherwise I would have been totally unprepared. That was quite disappointing...I was going to tip them both - but they literally disappeared so quickly I barely got a chance to even say goodbye. I was also disappointed, as the literature all said Yosemite park, but we didn't get there because it was winter...fair enough - but I wasn't the only one who didn't understand we weren't going there..and we felt a little deceived...my tour itinerary still said Yosemite park on it, so that is where I thought we were going....

Western USA Escorted Tours

  • ITINERARIES
  • FEATURED TOURS

Welcome to the West

Here legends larger-than-life loom over landscapes sculpted in sand. Rivers tunnel through time leaving cavernous canyons in their wake. Geysers steam like clockwork precision and rocks balance, arch and bridge in whimsical formations. Go west with Tauck and you'll find evergreen giants, painted deserts, pink-hued stone citadels as you ride with cowboys, hike with naturalists and raft with guides passionate about the places they roam.

Yellowstone national park, seriously... there's no other place on earth like it – yellowstone national park.

There's everything else, and then there's Yellowstone; it's truly like no other place on Earth. Why? Because it sits atop the largest "supervolcano" on the North American continent – one of the hottest spots on the planet. It's called the Yellowstone Caldera, and it lurks beneath the surface, giving rise to Yellowstone National Park's host of gushing geysers, steaming fumaroles, hot springs, mud pot and more – nothing less than the largest concentration of geothermal features on Earth, spectacular in winter or summer. In an amazing setting such as this, pretty much anything you do – from a wildlife safari in the summer, to a snowcoach ride in the winter… or hike, climb, horseback ride, ski, snowshoe, watch a sunrise or a sunset – is something you'll never forget.

Yosemite National Park

Through a lens, brightly and darkly – yosemite national park.

What a young Ansel Adams saw through his lens as he trekked into the California wilderness more than 100 years ago – as John Muir did a half-century before him – has inspired countless visitors to explore its chiseled landscapes. Celestial bodies trump electricity. Running water falls from rocks. Residents are furred, finned or feathered. And skyscrapers with names like Half Dome and El Capitan are nature-made. Adams iconic photographs need no words or explanation. Even in black and white, they capture what he felt about places now immortalized for future generations.

Grand Teton National Park

Big sky, big mountains, big picture... grand teton national park.

Out here in the Great American West, everything is "big." For starters, Wyoming comprises part of "Big Sky Country"... where the heavens ranging above the region's vast grasslands, winding rivers and jagged mountain peaks do indeed appear to stretch on forever and ever. Then there are the mountains themselves – in this case the Tetons, crowned by Grand Teton (that's the "big" one that gives the national park its name; other peaks in the range include Middle Teton, South Teton, Mount Owen and Teewinot) – seemingly bursting right up out of the floor of the glacial valley we call Jackson Hole, to loom majestically over everything below.

Grand Canyon National Park

Coming to grips with the impossible... at grand canyon national park.

Surely you have stumbled upon some other planet... or at least it feels that way at Grand Canyon National Park. Your first glimpse of the enormous Grand Canyon strains credulity. What giants have been playing with the rock here? Or what cataclysmic force of the universe? Then the drama starts. Clouds, shadows, and the shifting sun keep transforming the landscape. As the sun flames in the west, canyon walls turn red while the giants paint the sky, creating masterpieces so beautiful they freeze you in your tracks. The Grand Canyon sprawls wide open, carved out by the Colorado River, revealing two billion years of Earth's history; here is where air meets land, where you meet what feels like destiny, with just the white-tailed Kaibab squirrel, only found here, as witness.

Rotel, the touring German hotel on wheels, rolls to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel

rotel tours westen usa

What was that tomato-red rig breezing along Estero Boulevard?

A bus? An RV?

Nope. It’s a Rotel – a “rolling hotel.”

One of these German custom-built buses arrived Monday at the Red Coconut RV park on Fort Myers Beach, and has been drawing second looks ever since.

People assume the vehicle carries musicians, a traveling theater – "or chickens," quipped tour guide Birgit Zahn.

Such buses are a relatively rare sight in these parts. However, they provide a form of no-frills travel Rotel Tours in Tittling, Germany, introduced nearly 60 years ago, and which since has spread to remote and not-so-remote corners of the globe.

If you didn't get to see the Rotel that was in Lee County for a couple of days, here’s the 4-1-1:

This hotel-on-wheels can sleep 24 guests, a driver and a tour guide.

Guests ride in front during the day, and then move to a triple deck of berths in the rear at night.

More: City of Fort Myers, families spar in court over downtown hotel site

That sleeping experience could be a claustrophobic’s nightmare.

Single cabins measure three feet high, three feet wide – and six feet long.

Their bottom surface is all bed: You probably could prop yourself up to sitting position – unless perhaps you play center in the NBA.

Traveler Siegi Volkner, who is about 5 feet, 10 inches, finds the space manageable. Each berth has a window to the outside.

And, after a day of sightseeing, swimming in the Gulf and such, “you’re so tired in the evening. You lie down, and you sleep,” Volkner said.

Different Rotel models operate elsewhere in the world, including some with a detachable trailer of sleeping cabins that are left behind during day trips.

None of the rigs have showers; hence, campgrounds with shower-and-restroom facilities are favored destinations. Many have a single toilet aboard, although this one doesn’t.

“When we travel, we stop every two hours,” Zahn said.

The 18-day tour she's leading began in Newark, New Jersey. That's where the travelers flew in from Frankfurt, Germany.

More: Amavida developers apply hotel expertise to senior community soon to open in Fort Myers

Stops included New York City, Washington, D.C., Colonial Williamsburg and Myrtle Beach, to name a few.

The 15 guests on this tour all hail from Germany; however, Zahn has led tours that included Italians – and Germans who immigrated to Canada.

The group left the Beach for a day trip to Sanibel Island on Tuesday, and planned to visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers on Wednesday before heading to Miami, Key West – and then flying home.

Fran Myers, co-owner of the Red Coconut, sees the German tour group as a sign that some normalcy is returning to Southwest Florida’s lifeblood tourism and hospitality industry, which accounts for an estimated one in five jobs in Lee and Collier counties.

Fish-killing, cough-inducing red tide isn’t entirely gone from the state. However, at least for now it appears to be retreating locally.

Said Myers: “The water’s great! Our phones are ringing off the hook."

Western USA Highlights

Meaning a place of peace and refuge, Zion's sandstone walls rise thousands of feet above the valleys and cliffs high above the canyon floor's lush greenery and snaking Virgin River. Western wonders: 10 best small towns in the West

USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards logo

Best Small Town in the West (2024) April 10, 2024

The West is home to some of the most charming and scenic small towns in the country, hosting amazing art communities, tons of outdoor adventure opportunities, and top-notch dining options.

These 10 small towns — each with a population of fewer than 25,000 — have been selected by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the region for their diverse offerings.

Ashland, Oregon

No. 10: Ashland, Oregon

Located in southern Oregon, Ashland attracts thespians and theater lovers from all over with their incomparable Oregon Shakespeare Festival, ongoing since 1935. But if that’s not your thing, North Mountain Park and other nearby green spaces offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy a peaceful time outdoors. Top-notch dining, shopping, and crafts fairs and markets are also a draw.

Durango, Colorado

No. 9: Durango, Colorado

Deep in southwestern Colorado is the mountain town of Durango, a place so gorgeous it's been used as the backdrop for countless films including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "City Slickers," and "National Lampoon's Vacation." Speaking of its natural beauty, you can enjoy the great outdoors in all sorts of ways here, from rafting down the Animas River to skiing and snowboarding at any of the nearby ski resorts. Visitors can also explore over a dozen historic sites and even Mesa Verde National Park.

Williams, Arizona

No. 8: Williams, Arizona

Williams is a place for grand adventure and grand escapes, especially given how close it is to the one and only Grand Canyon (which can be accessed via the Grand Canyon Railway, built in 1901). But there's plenty of Americana charm to be found here, too, thanks to the town's connections to the historic Route 66. You'll see plenty of neon signs beckoning visitors to stop in for diner food, milkshakes, and kitschy souvenirs.

Bainbridge Island, Washington

No. 7: Bainbridge Island, Washington

A short ferry ride west of Seattle is Bainbridge Island — a harmonious respite from the nearby city life. Try a yoga class at Dayaalu Yoga and Wellness Center or spend some quiet time inside one of the local museums, like the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, or KiDiMu (if you’ve got young ones along). The Bloedel Reserve is a major attraction for visitors of all ages, where you can explore 140 acres of meadows, forests, and gardens.

Gig Harbor, Washington

No. 6: Gig Harbor, Washington

Located along the South Puget Sound, this charming little town offers plenty of activities for a relaxing time in the Pacific Northwest. Bed-and-breakfasts are aplenty, as are scenic walking areas like the Chalet in the Woods and Crescent Creek Park. A history museum, multiple breweries and distilleries, eateries (fine dining as well as more casual grab-and-go spots), plus boat tours and even gondola rides are all available to enjoy.

Manitou Springs, Colorado

No. 5: Manitou Springs, Colorado

Right outside of Colorado Springs is the absolutely charming Manitou Springs, where you can find everything from art galleries and ice cream shops to an old school penny arcade. But the bigger draws? Cave of the Winds Mountain Park, where you can take a tour of the caves and enjoy thrilling adventures, as well as the Manitou Incline, where the fittest of locals and visitors alike attempt to climb up 2,000 vertical feet via 2,744 steps.

Cody, Wyoming

No. 4: Cody, Wyoming

Named after Colonel William Frederick Cody (aka Buffalo Bill), this small northwestern Wyoming town is perfect for a Wild West-style getaway. Visitors can go on a wild mustang tour to learn about local wildlife, check out a re-creation of an old frontier town, or enjoy the outdoors at Buffalo Bill State Park. And for the history buffs, there are multiple museums in the area, including the Draper Natural History Museum, the Buffalo Bill Museum, and the Plains Indian Museum.

Grants, New Mexico

No. 3: Grants, New Mexico

Just an hour west of Albuquerque, you'll find Grants — a little town that offers proximity to a variety of unique and interesting experiences. After taking an obligatory photo with the Route 66 sign, you'll find plenty of things to do, including exploring the volcanic landscape of El Malpais National Monument and enjoying a drink and a bite to eat at Junkyard on 66 Brewery, a functioning auto salvage yard.

Solvang, California

No. 2: Solvang, California

Sometimes you come across a small U.S. town that makes you feel like you've been transported to a totally different country, and Solvang is just that. Chock-full of Danish history and heritage, you'll find Danish-inspired architecture, including some truly charming windmills, Scandinavian eateries like the Red Viking, and even the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art.

Seward, Alaska

No. 1: Seward, Alaska

Known as the gateway to the majestic Kenai Fjords National Park, this port city offers an array of excursions for folks hoping to see glaciers up close, spot orcas and other wildlife, and be immersed in the culture of the Indigenous peoples of the area. The best part is there are so many ways to do all these things, from going dog sledding to enjoying a tour via kayak, or even visiting the Alaska SeaLife Center to see puffins and sea lions up close.

Rotel - The German Bus Hotel

Capsule hotels are in vogue right now. The German tour company Rotel has always been ahead of the game by providing capsule hotels on wheels since 1945.

No matter how much you enjoy staying in a five-star hotel, you will always be stationary, trapped in one district. So, to feed your sense of novelty and adventure, you decide to book yourself on a Rotel bus.

What next? Well, first, you choose your tour from hundreds of options all around the world. If the wilds of Africa are not your thing, perhaps the vast planes of central Russia are. Or maybe the frozen wilderness of the Arctic will appeal, or what about exotic Ecuador?

On the bus, you ride in passenger seats during the day and sleep in 6x6x3ft capsules at night. There is a large kitchen on board for food, but you may have to go a few days until you reach a shower as there is no one on the bus.

But who could complain about the smell of unwashed passengers when you wake up in a new and exciting location every day?

Rotel Tours

Rotel Tours is the largest bus tour in the world, based in the Bavarian town of Tittling in Germany. Their name comes from the combination of "rolling" and "hotel", which is a portmanteau (two overlapping words creating a new one).

Rotel Tours was established by Georg Höltl right at the end of World War II in 1945, but it wasn't until 1951 that the first bus took off to Switzerland. Tours went to France, Italy, and Spain in subsequent years.

Höltl's concept for Rotel was human encounters and cultural exchange enabled by a bus hotel that takes you to places. It was a fragile period for Germans to travel abroad, but it was an important mission to reconcile with the past and make way for a better, more empathic future.

Hence, the Rotel Tours soon received its nickname: "International Meeting Trips". It was a pioneering project that has been successfully transporting thousands of people to distant places in their quirky buses ever since.

Rotel Tours Retro Old Photo

Then, in 1959, the Jerusalem-bound journey started in Münich. Without using any ferries, they drove all the way to Israel through Turkey over land and made it back to Germany in 38 days.

One decade later, Rotel managed to cross the Sahara, which paved the way for even farther destinations like Mongolia, China, Laos, or Vietnam.

Their specially prepared buses offer trips to far-away destinations, taking (primarily) Europeans (the journeys start in Germany) to exotic landscapes and cultures.

While most tour companies will book you a flight and an all-inclusive hotel where you will eat continental breakfast and have no interaction with locals other than the staff, Rotel offers something very different.

It takes you on study and expedition trips, going off the beaten paths, stopping at the most unlikely places, and converging with the locals whenever possible.

Rotel Tours

Rotel has four types of vehicles:

—A 20-seater four-wheel drive bus for trips off the beaten track going to South America, Africa, and Asia —A 24-seater bus combined going around European countries —A 34-seater four-wheel drive bus with a trailer for long expeditions in South America and Southern Africa —A 36-seater bus with a Rotel trailer

Rotel Tours Bus

All four buses have a unified Rotel cabin for overnight stays. It's similar to what you find in capsule hotels but can take you to the next undiscovered destination while you sleep.

The sleeping capsules are 6.6-foot (2 meters) long and 2.8-foot (80 cm) wide for singles and 5.6-foot (160 cm) for doubles.

Rotel Tour Capsule Sleeping

The idea is fifty years old but just as brilliant today. The long time since it started indicates that the concept is a commercial success.

Rotel in desert

Today, Rotel Tours offers as many as 3,400 beds on wheels and annually logs around 600,000 overnight stays.

Rotel bus in the desert

Rotel is a combination of a tourist bus and a hotel. Even while you are "sitting in your room," you discover parts of the world you have never seen before.

Rotel crossing the river

The journey will take you through winding roads, some of them so dangerous that without a professional driver, it would be too risky to take.

Rotel on dangerous roads

But every once in a while, the people onboard the bus can ask the driver to take a well-deserved stop to enjoy the cliffside panorama and relax.

Dangerous road

Another advantage of taking a sleeper bus all over the world is it can stop at some of the most famous sights, and you can enjoy the view from the window without needing to mingle with the average tourist.

Rotel in India

The offroad setup of the bus allows for taking routes that are not feasible for regular vehicles.

In the desert

The Rotel tour will take you through rugged terrain off the beaten path.

Rotel between rocky mountains

The destinations are often far off the beaten track and wide tourist paths. You are offered considerably more comfort and safety than if you were to wander around with a tent on your back.

Rotel Tours - Das Rollende Hotel - glance at the locals and their camels

Guests should not expect five-star luxury at the Rotel. There is no shower, but there is a toilet on the bus. A camping kitchen can also be used while it's stationary.

Stop at a camp

The organization uses existing campsites as much as possible, but this is not always possible in remote areas. The travel organization is active in Africa, Europe, and Asia, and the destinations are often exotic and rural.

Road to the high mountains

If more than 24 passengers come along, a trailer can be attached to the bus where you can stay overnight.

Rotel in the nature

The typical Rotel bus travels with between 20 and 40 tourists. It usually has 22 passenger seats and 24 rooms, including one for the driver and one for the tour guide.

African tribe and Rotel

The bus stops as often as possible at places where you can have a shower. On certain nights, you will also have the opportunity to spend the night in a normal hotel room.

A quick stop in Fatehpur Sikri, India

And if the bus gets in trouble, you and your fellow travelers will work as a team to get through challenging adventures.

People help Rotel to move after it got stuck

You get your own little crawl space - about 3.3 feet (1 meter) high but with ample width - where you can spend the nights in a little more comfort than in a tent.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

Technical skills and personal growth propel student's experience

Jacob Roberts

Now, equipped with a variety of internships, co-curricular activities and leadership roles, the senior aerospace engineering student is excited to continue his involvement on campus while exploring the endless possibilities of a career in aerospace engineering.

“I thought I was just coming here to be a student and to learn in academics, but I unexpectedly learned that coming here was all about personal growth and leadership,” explains Roberts.

One of the organizations Roberts is involved in is the Campus Activities Board (CAB), one the largest student organizations on campus. Soon after becoming a member in 2021, Roberts became the special events coordinator and is now serving as president, where he oversees all events, provides direction to his team, and meets with various staff and faculty to talk about University goals.

“It takes a lot of time, but the friendships and family I have made through it makes it worth it,” says Roberts. “I believe that everyone should be a part of CAB and join our family.”

Because of his role as president for CAB, Roberts is also involved in the Western Student Association (WSA) and serves as a representative on the Student Assessment Fee (SAF) Council. Through both of these organizations, Roberts advocates for University funding accordingly.

“We decide how to best utilize student money received through the SAF and how to best give it back to the students,” explains Roberts. “Through policy change, uplifting student voices, and providing feedback, WSA has accomplished many goals.”

Roberts’ student advocacy doesn’t stop there. He is also in his third year as a Fall Welcome ambassador and completed his first year as ambassador captain, helping new Western students connect with peers, WMU's campus, staff and resources all aimed at helping incoming students achieve success.

“I joined because I wanted to not only learn more about the University coming out of COVID-19 but wanted to meet new people,” says Roberts. “I’ve really enjoyed building those connections, being a mentor and guiding (students) through their University career.”

In addition to the vast opportunities for student involvement on campus, Roberts also appreciates the emphasis WMU puts on diversity and inclusion and sustainability. With a younger brother with Down Syndrome, Roberts advocates for a world where everyone is included through his involvement in programs such as Best Buddies at Western Michigan University and Special Olympics USA. Roberts is also working on pushing a new sustainability initiative titled Sustainable Housing Equipment Shed, hoping to limit waste while providing students with affordable dorm and apartment essentials.

“Through talks with the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Division of Student Affairs, things are looking up for this initiative,” says Roberts. “The goal is to have more funding provided to the Office for Sustainability so that they can fund this initiative and provide leadership through a graduate assistant and add the initiative to the University’s strategic plan.”

Along with his passion for these co-curricular activities, Roberts invests a lot of time and creativity in his studies. One of his favorite memories is from Propulsion I with aerospace and mechanical engineering chair and professor, Dr. William Liou . Roberts and his group members decided to focus their final project on the propulsive force that engineers could put into a wrench to throw it long distances titled “Project Wrench Rage: Propelling Anger into Motion.”

“My group and I decided to take the project in a less conventional way. While most other groups did research-based projects, ours was experimental,” explains Roberts. “We made a lot of mistakes throughout it, but ultimately learned about what all things need to be considered, prepared for, and thought of whenever you run an experiment.

A part of Roberts’ journey in discovering what career to pursue was joining Western Aerospace Launch Initiate (WALI), one of 20 registered student organizations offered at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Roberts joined the guidance, navigation and control (GNC) team within WALI where he learned about the details and challenges behind determining the location and orientation of a satellite. Roberts dedicates his experience in WALI to helping him land his first engineering internship at aerospace company Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut.

“I was able to get hands on experience with some of the GNC parts and run a test with the military grade GPS system,” explains Roberts. “My experience and time in WALI really helped me to secure that internship with Pratt and Whitney, as I had hands on experience outside of the classroom.”

At Pratt and Whitney, Roberts was a quality engineering intern where they track and predict non-conformance parts or processes and aim to make the engines safer and more reliable. Roberts was a part of the manufacturing process and explored a different kind of working environment. Through his internship at Pratt and Whitney, Roberts discovered a lot about quality engineering and even more about himself.

“I learned about manufacturing and product quality. I learned about the company as a whole. But most importantly to me, I learned the importance of self-reflection ," says Roberts.

Embracing this personal growth, Roberts is excited about the future of aerospace engineering and the opportunities and challenges that come along with it. Specifically, he wants to explore the development of next generation fighter jets and advanced propulsion systems.

“I’m very interested in next generation turbine jet engines, and I look forward to pursuing a career where I can be a part of those programs,” says Roberts. “Each design and program are going to come with its own challenges, and that’s something I want to take on and learn from.”
