Need to enable Java on Safari 12

When I updated Safari to v.12, I found out that Java no longer works. I installed the latest version of Java restarted my Mac and Safari. When I went to the Java test page I got the message "Unsupported plug-in." Also enabled java in Safari and in the Java control panel. What is the "unsupported plug-in?" How do I fix this?

The Tech Help link suggests that Community Specialist i_rina is wrong and Java applets are no longer allowed in Safari as of Version 12.0 released on 17 September 2018. The article has some workarounds using a version of Firefox that is no longer supported, but I haven't tried that. There may be opportunities to use Java programs if they are structured using Java Web Start, not applets. However, when I last looked into that, it required the developer to sign the code with both a Java certificate and an Apple certificate.

The "have a wonderful day" signoff by the Community Specialist seems off-tune with the reality.

The latest versions of Safari, Firefox and Chrome have all dropped support for Java. It's a massive online security risk and always has been. Flash is next on the list. Can't remember the exact date, but Adobe is dropping all support and development for it soon. HTML5 can play video on its own. It needs no help from a Flash or Shockwave plugin.

I've tested Java Web Start. As on Windows, it works despite Java applets no longer being allowed in browsers, as long as the developer builds in Java Web Start support.

The user needs to jump through a bunch of hoops to get this to work, but the result is a local JNLP file that launches the Java software without needing a browser.

The user needs to go to a download link for the JNLP file, and save the JNLP file despite all the weird things that happen when you try to do this in various browsers in various Macintosh environments, such as having a Discard option but no Keep option. But once the JNLP file is rescued from Downloads, for the first launch you need to right-click on it and choose Open, and answer that you are sure you want to open it. Then you need to do the usual Java security choices (as on Windows the Java code needs to be signed with a Java certificate). Afterwards you can just launch the software from the JNLP file.

Presumably if the developer double signs the Java code with both Apple and Java certificates the procedure is easier (on Windows you only need the Java certificate). So although it is much easier on Windows, it does work on Macintosh for users willing to jump through the byzantine double security procedures.

William, I'm not an IT guy or proficient with the inner workings of a Mac, but this did work for me... Restart your computer and hold down the COMMAND and R on the keyboard. This will put your computer in recover mode. Re-install the OS from the command window. The OS will install Safari 11.1.2... you will be back up and running. The install will not delete any of your data, but a back-up would be a good idea before you do this. BE QUICK! Not sure how long Apple will keep Safari 1.1.2 in it's iOS download. TURN OFF AUTO UPDATE!!! Hope that works for you. Cheers.

Hi, please follow the below steps to enable Java in Safari 12 browser properly:-

1.Click on Safari browser and then choose Preferences 2.Here, simply select the Security option 3.Select Allow Plug-ins, then click on Manage Website Settings 4.Click on the Java items, select an option (Ask, Allow or Allow Always) from the pulldown list When visiting other websites 5.Finally, click Done, then close the Safari Preferences window

After that, restart your browser to make the above process happen in your Safari browser. Also, you can take the help of internet plugins in Safari browser for Mac.

This is silly.

Many switches and other equipment are managed from a browser and is using java. We are now left back to use Internet Explorer from a Windows PC to manage the equipment or change all switches in our industrial environments.

This is silly. We are in sted of more security forced to so use even less security.

Our company has been working with Apple Macintosh for decades. Our workflow, homologated to work in the Safari browser using Java Applet to select and indicate the path of the files, simply will not work anymore! That simple! When we buy new equipment with new versions of OS and Safari, what will we do? It's complicated.

Try to instal Mozilla Firefox v. 52 and disable automatic update. That version is the last that support the Java API from the browser. I am going to try that.

Correction, is has to be v. 51 not 52. of Firefox, this work.

Be fast and go in to the settings and disable automatic update and restart Firefox. Check again that it no already have updated the version, it did for me. In that case reinstall v. 51 and you can go.

Cannot enable Java in Safari (or any other browser) in OS X

I have the following running on my Mac:

• OSX Yosemite (10.10.2)
• Java version 8 update 31
• Safari 8.0.4

I am unable to run any Java applet on Safari. I have added multiple sites to the exception lists (in System Preferences -> Java Control Panel -> Security), but it has not changed anything.

I also don't see anything related to Java in Safari preferences:

When I try to run a Java applet, it says, Error. Click for details. , and when I do, this is what I get:

I've tried Chrome and Firefox as well, and this is the common error they give me:

Whatever I do, I cannot allow for Java applets to be run on any browser.

With these technologies, the Java application stack has been optimized to run larger heaps and highly dynamic frameworks that can make decisions at runtime. Unfortunately, those efforts weren't good enough to make Java the preferred programming language for developers to implement cloud-native Java applications for serverless and event-driven platforms. Other languages filled in the space, particularly JavaScript, Python, and Go, with Rust and WebAssembly offering new alternatives.

Despite this competition, cloud-native Java is making an impact on cloud-centric software development. How to install Java on macOS

This future for Java development starts with more people installing and using Java. So I will walk through installing and getting started with the Java development environment on macOS. (If you are running Linux, please see Seth Kenlon's article How to install Java on Linux .)

Install OpenJDK from a Brew repository

Homebrew is the de-facto standard package manager for macOS. If you haven't installed it yet, Matthew Broberg's Introduction to Homebrew walks you through the steps.

Once you have Homebrew on your Mac, use the brew command to install OpenJDK , which is the open source way to write Java applications:

Confirm that OpenJDK installed correctly with $ java -version :

The output confirms OpenJDK 14 (the latest version, as of this writing) is installed.

Install OpenJDK from a binary

If you are not a fan of package management and prefer managing Java yourself, there's always the option to download and install it manually.

I found a download link to the latest version on the OpenJDK homepage. Download the OpenJDK 14 binary:

Move to the directory where you downloaded the binary file and extract it:

Next, add Java to your PATH:

The Java plugin is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and allows a browser to work with the Java platform to run Java applets to execute in the browser.

The Java plugin is enabled in a large number of browsers around the world and this makes it a target for malicious hackers. Any popular third-party plugin is subjected to the same kind of unwanted attention. The team behind Java have always taken security seriously and they will endeavor to quickly release an update to patch any serious security vulnerabilities found. This means the best way to minimize problems with the Java plugin is to make sure it is up-to-date with the latest release.

If you are really worried about the security of the Java plugin but still need to visit a popular website (e.g., online banking in some countries) that need the Java plugin enabled, then consider the two browser trick. You can use one browser (e.g., Internet Explorer) only when you want to use the websites using the Java plugin. For the rest of the time use another browser, (e.g., Firefox) with the Java plugin disabled.

Alternatively, you might find that you don't go to websites that use Java very often. In this case, you may prefer the option of disabling and enabling the Java plugin as needed. The instructions below will help you to set up your browser to disable (or enable) the Java plugin.

To turn on/turn off Java applets in the Firefox browser:

• Select Tools -> Add-ons from the menu toolbar.
• The Add-ons Manager window appears. Click on Plugins on the left-hand side.
• In the list on the right select, the Java Plugin - the name of the plugin will vary depending on whether you are a Mac OS X or Windows user. On the Mac, it will be called Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI Browsers or Java Applet Plug-in (depending on the operating system version). On Windows, it will be called Java (TM) Platform .
• The button to the right of the selected plugin can be used to enable or disable the plugin.

Internet Explorer

To enable/disable Java in the Internet Explorer browser:

• Select Tools -> Internet Options from the menu toolbar.
• Click on the Security tab.
• Click on the Custom level.. button.
• In the Security Settings window scroll down the list until you see Scripting of Java applets.
• Java applets are Enabled or Disabled depending on which radio button is checked. Click on the option you want and then click OK to save the change.

To enable/disable Java in the Safari browser:

• Select Safari -> Preferences from the menu toolbar.
• In the preferences, window click on the Security icon.
• Make sure the Enable Java checkbox is checked if you want Java enabled or unchecked if you want it disabled.
• Close the preferences window and the change will be saved.

To turn on/turn off Java applets in the Chrome browser:

• Click on the wrench icon to the right of the address bar and choose Settings .
• At the bottom click the link called Show advanced settings...
• Under the Privacy, section click on Content settings...
• Scroll down to the Plug-ins section and click on Disable individual plug-ins .
• Look for the Java plugin and click on the Disable link to turn off or the Enable link to turn on.

To enable/disable the Java plugin in the Opera browser:

• In the address bar type in "opera:plugins" and hit enter. This will display all the installed plugins.
• Scroll down to the Java plugin and click on Disable to turn off the plugin or Enable to turn it on.

Selenium is a well-known software used for software testing purposes. Selenium consists of three parts. One is Selenium IDE, one is Selenium Webdriver & the last one is Selenium Grid. Among these Selenium Webdriver is the most important one. Using Webdriver online website testing can be done. There are three main Webdrivers present. For the Chrome browser, ChromeDriver is present. For the Firefox browser, Gecko Driver is applicable. And for Microsoft Edge, there will be MSEdgeDriver present. Excluding these, many more drivers are present for other browsers. In this article, the process of running SafariWebdriver is implemented. It is useful for those who use Mac OS. This simple Java program can be run.

Pre-Requisites:

• For running SafariDriver, the Java jdk version must be installed in the machine previously.
• The latest version of Safari should be installed.
• It is preferable to install Eclipse IDE on the machine so that running this code will be easier.
• The most important prerequisite is latest SafariDriver should be downloaded on the machine.
• Here, using SafariDriver, the home page of Google is going to open. For, that some methods need to be imported.
• First, the Google home page link is to be stored in a string.
• Then in the program, the property of the browser is to be set. setProperty() method is going to be used here.
• In the setProperty() method, the first argument is to be the Webdriver that is to be going to use. Here, using SafariDriver specifically that argument have to be passed. And in the second argument, the location of the SafariDriver.exe is to be passed.

Note : In this case, SafariDriver.exe is stored in Eclipse, so maybe the location seems different. But also, a complete File Explorer path can also be passed.

• Then a new object called driver should be implemented which is a type of WebDriver. Here, in this case, it will be SafariDriver.
• Then using that driver object, the get() method will be used. This get() method of WebDrivers helps to open some URLs provided. Here the home page of Google is going to be opened. So, only the string where the URL has been stored will be passed. Executing this method will go to open a new Chrome window.
• Then the sleep() method is going to be implemented. This delays the programs for some time. So that the output can be visible easily.
• At last, the opened Safari window has to be closed. For that reason, the quit() method is going to be implemented.

Below is the complete implementation of the above approach:

If the above code is run, then a new Safari Window will be opened. This open window will be controlled by SafariDriver.exe.

Hence, the program runs successfully.

Update macOS on Mac

Use Software Update to install updates and upgrades for macOS and its built-in apps, including Safari.

Before you begin

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac .

Make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet . You should be able to access websites or receive email, for example.

Use Software Update

Open Software Update:

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings. Click General in the sidebar of the window that opens, then click Software Update on the right.

If you don't have System Settings in the Apple menu , choose System Preferences instead. Then click Software Update in the window that opens.

Don't see Software Update settings?

When you open Software Update, it automatically begins checking for new software.

If new software is available for your Mac, click the button to Update or Upgrade. What's the difference between an update and upgrade?

If new software is not available for your Mac, Software Update says that your Mac is up to date. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model. For example, if your Mac is not compatible with a later version of macOS or Safari, Software Update does not offer it to you. Which Mac models are compatible?

Before installation begins, you will be asked to enter your administrator password. It's the password you use to log in to your Mac. Forgot your password?

During installation, your Mac might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times. If installation is not successful, learn what to do .

If you don't see Software Update

If your older Mac doesn't include Software Update, use the App Store instead. It's in your Applications folder. Click the Updates tab in the App Store to check for updates, or search for the software by name.

An update is a newer version of the currently installed macOS, such as an update from macOS Ventura 13.5 to macOS Ventura 13.6.

An upgrade is a major new version of macOS with new name, such as an upgrade from macOS Ventura to macOS Sonoma.

Starting with Java Version 7 Update 10, a new security feature has been added to Java. Some web pages may include content or apps that use the Java plug-in, and these can now be disabled using a single option in the Java Control Panel.

Disable Java through the Java Control Panel

• In the Java Control Panel, click on the Security tab.
• Deselect the check box for Enable Java content in the browser . This will disable the Java plug-in in the browser.
• Click Apply . When the Windows User Account Control (UAC) dialog appears, allow permissions to make the changes.
• Click OK in the Java Plug-in confirmation window.
• Restart the browser for changes to take effect.

Disable the Java content in the browser

Internet explorer.

The only way to completely disable Java in Internet Explorer (IE) is to disable Java through the Java Control Panel as noted above.

Chrome browser versions 42 and above. Starting with Chrome version 42 (released April 2015), Chrome has disabled the standard way in which browsers support plugins. More info

• From the Firefox menu, select Tools then click the Add-ons option
• In the Add-ons Manager window, select Plugins
• Click Java (TM) Platform plugin to select it
• Click Disable (if the button displays Enable then Java is already disabled)
• Choose Safari Preferences
• Choose the Security option
• Select Allow Plug-ins then click on Manage Website Settings
• Click on the Java item, select Block from the pulldown list When visiting other websites
• Click Done then close the Safari Preferences window
