Best Safari Parks & Game Reserves Near Nairobi

Stuart is a travel writer and author of numerous Lonely Planet guidebooks, including 'Kenya', 'Rwanda' and 'Tanzania'.

Nairobi is a city that lives and breathes wildlife, from the carved wooden hippos and lions for sale in every tourist handicraft shop to the real-life versions haunting the wildlife reserves near Nairobi. Kenya makes a superb base for day or overnight excursions to a diverse array of safari parks.

Overlooking the city are Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa where all the Big Five, bar elephants, can be found. Just a few hours further away are forest-cloaked volcanoes, flamingo-filled lakes and shady gorges bustling with baboons. It’s little wonder Nairobi is the safari capital of East Africa.

689 Short Safaris From Nairobi

1. Nairobi National Park

Rhino at Nairobi National Park

No other capital city on Earth can boast of having a fully fledged national park complete with lions, cheetahs and rhinos against a backdrop of city center tower blocks. This one-of-a-kind park is a gorgeous 117km 2 /45mi 2 stretch of hilly grasslands and patches of mixed woodland that surprises everyone with its abundance of life. In fact, if you want to see rhinos then Nairobi National Park is actually one of the best safari parks in East Africa, along with healthy populations of lions, cheetahs and hyenas, so you’ve a very good chance of spying some predators. There’s also solid populations of buffalo, impalas and wildebeest. One thing the park doesn’t have (and never had) is elephants. Nairobi National Park is the obvious choice for someone with only half a day or so to visit a safari park near Nairobi, and it’s also a very rewarding park to visit as part of a longer Kenyan safari.

  • Distance from Nairobi: 9km/5mi (around 20 to 45 minutes) from central Nairobi but instant access if staying near the park gates
  • Accommodation: Wide number of city center or airport hotels from which access is easy or, for a more genuine bush experience, try the Nairobi Tented Camp which is the only camp actually within the park
  • Activities: Game drives, safari boardwalk, animal orphanage

2. Lake Nakuru National Park

Pelican at lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is like the twin sister of Nairobi National Park. Sitting right on the doorstep of the fast-growing city of Nakuru, this popular and very rewarding park packs a lot of glam into a relatively small 180km 2 /69mi 2 . This is excellent rhino country and visitors are almost guaranteed to see both black and white rhinos as well as hippos, baboons (lots and lots of baboons!) and, if you’re really lucky, lions, which are locally famed for their tree-climbing skills. However, aside from the rhinos the real stars of the park are the flamingos. When conditions are just right tens of thousands of these enchanting birds cover the surface of the lake. Even if they’re not in residence there are always massive numbers of pelicans and plenty of other avian life.

  • Distance from Nairobi: 180km/111mi (around 3½ hours)
  • Accommodation: Nakuru city has accommodation to suit all budgets and most people base themselves in town when visiting the park. If you prefer to stay within the park itself then there are several upmarket and expensive choices.
  • Activities: Within the park all safaris are conducted by vehicle. Around Nakuru are a number of other interesting sights, including the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and the Menengai Crater, an impressive volcanic crater that can be climbed.

3. Hell's Gate National Park

Pinnacle of honey-toned rock at Hells Gate National Park

Pinnacles of honey-toned rock reach toward the sky, deep gorges shatter the landscape and sun-bleached savannah grasslands bustle with dark striped zebra, huge troops of baboon and curious giraffe. Hells Gate National Park is an excellent overnight excursion from Nairobi. The park has plenty of plains wildlife but very few predators or other dangerous animals. It is also unusual among Kenyan national parks in that you can walk or cycle at will throughout the park. If peddling frantically past a group of moody buffalo isn’t exciting enough, then Hell’s Gate has some superb rock-climbing opportunities. All up, this is an ideal place for an on-foot African safari near Nairobi. Weekends, however, can be busy with people fleeing Nairobi.

  • Distance from Nairobi: 125km/77mi (around 2½ hours if the traffic is good)
  • Accommodation: Nearby Lake Naivasha has plenty of good quality shore-side accommodation, including the colonial-period Elsamere Lodge, which is the former home of Joy Adamson (conservationist, artist and author)
  • Activities: Cycling, walking, rock climbing; nearby Lake Naivasha offers boat safaris and exceptional bird watching

4. Mt Longonot National Park

3. Mountt Longonot National Park

As you drive west out of Nairobi the ever-sprawling fingers of the city slowly give way to cool, muddy, green agricultural land and patches of forest. And then, quite suddenly, the land tumbles steeply downwards to the searing hot, dry floor of the Great Rift Valley, pockmarked with great, dimple-like volcanic craters and sun-sparkled lakes. It’s the kind of view that makes people fall in love with Africa. The most visible of these volcanoes is giant Mt Longonot (2,776m/9,107ft). Today this dormant volcano is a little-visited national park that makes for a perfect ‘away from it all’ escape from Nairobi. This isn’t a park offering a classic safari experience. Instead, Longonot is all about hiking. The steep volcanic slopes are carpeted in a thick forest (birds and monkeys are common) and a sharply ascending trail wends upwards to the crater summit and rewards with astonishing views both down into the huge Lost World crater itself and – a thousand meters below – the bleached grass plains.

  • Distance from Nairobi: 83km/51mi (around 2 to 2½ hours if the traffic is good)
  • Accommodation: There’s a basic campsite at the park entrance, or lots of options at nearby Lake Naivasha

5. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Buffalos at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

This park is somewhat further afield than any of the others included here (a minimum of two days is needed to make a visit worthwhile but longer would be better). However, the world-renowned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is everything you hoped East Africa might be. A backdrop of Mt Kenya, the classic, savannah grasslands and clumps of fever trees make a scenically stunning park that is home to so much wildlife it’s like a vision of Eden. All the Big Five are present, including lots of rhinos and elephants (attention: the elephants in this part of Kenya have a well-founded reputation for aggression) and easy-to-find lions and buffalos and some leopards. The reserve is also a great place to see cheetahs.

But the good news doesn’t end here. Lewa has some of the best wildlife guides in Africa, dreamy safari lodges and an air of absolute exclusivity. Best of all, Lewa is at the forefront of community conservation projects in Africa, so you can be sure that every dollar you spend will go towards progressive conservation policies and community development. Of all the wildlife reserves near Nairobi, Lewa offers the stand-out African safari experience.

  • Distance from Nairobi: 250km/155mi (around 4½ hours); daily flights from Nairobi straight to Lewa are also available
  • Accommodation: There are nine camps and lodges within Lewa – all are gorgeous, and all are expensive
  • Activities: Vehicle jeep safaris are the main activity but it’s also possible to do some thrilling bush walks where encounters with large mammals are common

Ololo Safari Lodge & Farm

Our family owned and run lodge, where your safari begins.

Ololo Safari lodge is where our African story all started. It was 2008 when the Chapman family uprooted their lives in Australia and took the ambitious leap to purchase a farm and old homestead, located on the edge of Nairobi National Park, with the dream of converting it into one of Kenya's most beautiful and sustainable lodges. Five years later, the lodge was finally opened, and has since become one of Kenya's most iconic destinations for eco-tourism, wildlife safaris and food fresh from the Ololo regenerative farm.

Ololo is perfectly situated, on the beautiful banks of the Mbagathi River which forms the southern border of the Nairobi National Park. The lodge is a mere 45-minute drive through the park from Nairobi and both main airports, yet the lodge's secluded location feels like a world away. Set on a productive 20 acre working commercial farm Ololo offers the joys of delicious ‘paddock to plate’ fresh ingredients . With our established and secluded gardens, guests are able to settle in and soak up a unique safari experience.

Wildlife is right on our doorstep and all can enjoy breathtaking views over the national park, to the famed Ngong Hills in the west, sundowner in hand. Or you may like to wile the hours away at the lodge by the pool, adventure on a safari into the park, take a tour of the Ololo Farm or perhaps an excursion with us into historic Karen.

Ololo’s rooms are unique and diverse, each tastefully appointed with attention to historical detail. The accommodation at Ololo ranges from the farm's old converted stables, our tented cottages under makuti thatch and to the original suites in the main house of the lodge and our two family cottages.

In the cooler months, guests may sit by the fire-pit in the garden or cosy up to our blazing fireplace in the inviting living room. Our stone clad cellar and small library close at hand. Whatever time of the year you visit, it’s easy to enjoy the serenity and home-style comfort that Ololo offers.

9 of the best safari lodges in kenya.

Safari lodge in Kenya balcony overlooking the bush

Going on an African safari is a dream come true for so many people; it certainly was for me! But with so many places to stay in Kenya, finding the right one for your budget and style can be harder than spotting the elusive leopard! That’s why I’ve written this post to share some of the best safari lodges in Kenya.

Most visitors to Kenya spend their time in a number of different National Parks, so I’ve split the lodges out to the best places to stay in Lake Naivasha, Amboseli, Nairobi National Park and, of course, the Maasai Mara.

Masai Mara Safari Lodges

The Masai Mara features at the top of the list for most visitors to Kenya, and with good reason! The reserve is home to some of the biggest populations of big cats in the country, as well as being a site of the Great Migration.

Some of the best safari lodges in Kenya are in the Masai Mara, and here’s just  some of our favourite lodges :

Mara Explorer Tented Camp

Mara Explorer Tented Camp  is a 5-star camp in the Masai Mara, housing 10 luxurious tents furnished with super comfy beds, hand-carved mahogany furniture and antique chests. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with twin sinks and a shower. But that’s not all… Outside on your private verandah, a free-standing bathtub means you can enjoy open-air bathing whilst looking for hippos and other wildlife along the banks of the Talek River. You really can’t beat Mara Explorer Camp for its position in the African bush!

Game drives happen three times a day in 4×4 safari jeeps with open sides and pop-up roofs for excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. The lodge’s Gold standard guides remain dedicated to helping you get the most out of each day’s sightings. You also have the option to head out on hot air balloon safaris, nature walks and cultural visits to nearby Masai villages.

Back at the camp, there are sofas, a bookshelf and a fully-stocked bar in the central lounge to keep you entertained in between game drives and mealtimes. Speaking of which… the resident chefs serve beautifully presented and delicious food at Mara Explorer Tented Camp, making it one of the best safari lodges in Kenya for foodies! The meals are served on a central verandah overlooking the river, but you can also opt for bush dining experiences for an extra special treat.

Porini Mara Camp

Porini Mara Camp  is set in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, close to the Masai Mara National Park. The conservancy is a beautiful area of wilderness, with a huge variety of landscapes and wildlife. In the rivers, you might spot crocodiles and hippos, while on the open plains, you have an excellent chance of seeing big cats, including cheetahs and lions. Even leopards have been known to frequent the acacia trees surrounding the camp. If you’re really lucky, you might spot one!

Being set in a conservancy rather than the national park, you can enjoy sundowners and picnic breakfasts out in the wild. You can even opt to head out on a nature walk with one of the Masai warriors to learn about the plants, tracks and animals surrounding the camp.

As with all Porini camps, there’s a communal mess tent with comfy chairs and dining tables where delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served by the camp’s friendly, welcoming staff.

You own tent is fully equipped with all the essentials – comfortable beds, a writing desk and chair, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with plumbed in toilet and bucket shower. Each tent overlooks a plain where the animals are free to roam. From our tent, we saw bush bucks, zebras, giraffes and impalas go about their days as we relaxed during the afternoon. During the night, you can fall asleep to the sound of hyena chattering and lions roaring in the distance, making it a very authentic place to stay in Kenya!

The Best Amboseli National Park Lodges

Amboseli National Park and its surrounding conservancies make for excellent wildlife viewing. Being so close to Kilimanjaro National Park, safaris are often conducted with the majestic mountain as a backdrop, making for beautiful photos. The National Park is home to all of the big 5, but the park’s huge populations of elephants with huge tusks steal the show here.

Find out the best  safari lodges in Amboseli National Park :

Porini Amboseli Camp

A safari camp with sustainability at its heart,  Porini Amboseli  is easily one of the best safari lodges in Kenya. Guest tents are spacious and comfortable and contain absolutely everything you would need for a few nights in the bush, from beds with crisp linen to a desk and chair, and from a wardrobe to store all your belongings to a fully stocked ensuite bathroom. This is safari glamping at its best.

The rest of the camp is just as impressive. The mess tent contains dining tables, sofas and a swing chair to relax during the day. There’s also a campfire around which you can tell stories of the day’s sightings as the staff bring an unlimited number of drinks from their fully stocked bar. There’s also a little shop selling crafts made by the Masai women from a nearby village, which you’re welcome to visit if you wish.

The food at Porini Amboseli was delicious; I still can’t get over how the camp’s staff managed to cook 2 course breakfasts and buffet lunches as well as 3 course dinners plus snacks every day in the literal middle of nowhere. The quality of the food is a real testament to the camp’s staff, all of whom are exceptional, from the chefs and management to the porters and guides. Everyone made an effort to learn our names and were genuinely interested in our lives. That made it almost impossible to leave!

As with all Porini camps, Porini Amboseli is dedicated to supporting the local community and conservation of the environment. To save water, the camp uses bucket showers, where a limited amount of water is heated over a log fire before being brought to your tent. Furthermore, recycling is a big part of the camp’s ethos. Plastic is virtually non-existent here, with tomato ketchup being served out of glass bottles (it’s a small thing but it counts!) and drinking water given to you in aluminium flasks.

Besides the eco-focus, another of the best parts of this camp is its location. Located in the Selenkay Conservancy bordering Amboseli National Park, you can drive off road without crowds of tourist vehicles in your way, all the while having Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop for your photos. You can also stay out after dark and enjoy sundowners in the camp, which is impossible to do within the National Park itself.

We had some of the best game drives out of the whole Kenya trip here thanks to the dedication of the staff and their expert knowledge of the animals. Nature walks are also possible thanks to the guides who know how to track animals and explain the plants and Masai culture as you walk through the conservancy around the camp.

The Best Safari Lodges in Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is unique in that it’s the only protected ecosystem in the world so close to a capital city. It’s just 7km away from the centre of Nairobi, but inside the park it feels like you’re worlds away. All of the big 5 apart from elephants are here, and you might be lucky enough to see black rhinos hiding in the forests too.

If you’re visiting other National Parks while in Kenya, Nairobi National Park makes a wonderful introduction to the safari lifestyle or, plugged on to the end of a safari, a good way of easing back into the idea of going home.

Here’s our pick of the  best places to stay in Nairobi National Park :

Nairobi Tented Camp

Nairobi Tented Camp  was the first accommodation of any kind to be allowed in Nairobi National Park. But its monopoly on accommodation didn’t mean it skimped on quality. Far from it! The camp has just 9 guest tents, kitted out with stylish furniture, comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms too.

The communal areas of the camp are made up of a dining room, where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served, as well as a lounge area with sofas, books and board games. While the National Park rules mean that you’re not allowed sundowners within the park itself, Nairobi Tented Camp has an open bushfire area where you can sit after the final game drive of the day to enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks before dinner.

Staff at the camp are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the guides are among the best in the business. We were lucky enough to be guided by Gordon, who trained in South Africa and guided in the Masai Mara, but has now settled in Nairobi to be closer to home. He took us on morning and afternoon game drives of the park, and gave us incredible insights into the animals we found on our drives. Though we weren’t lucky enough to spot the elusive leopard, we did get some wonderful sightings of lions, white rhinos and even a serval cat in the park.

Being so close to the capital, there’s a real mix of guests: everything from couples of their honeymoon and families with tiny babies, to businessmen on breaks away from international business meetings. There really is something for everyone here!

Ololo Safari Lodge

Ololo Safari Lodge  is in an enviable position on the southern border of Nairobi National Park, along the banks of Mbagathi River. The lodge itself is set on a working farm that provides the kitchen with the freshest ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Any waste is either fed to the resident chickens or turned into compost, as part of the lodge’s key focus on sustainability.

As well as the composting system, Ololo makes use of sustainable farming practices and recycling programmes. The lodge also filters water from its own bore hole, which is then filtered for guests to drink and shared with the local community.

The lodge serves restaurant-quality meals on tables overlooking the park, and guests can also enjoy the facilities of the main lounge with its comfy furniture, a fireplace, library and wine cellar. Outside, there’s a fire pit for evening drinks, sun loungers around an outdoor swimming pool, and even massage tables for the ultimate in relaxation.

Guests can choose between rooms set in converted stables and thatched cottage tents (with both stone and canvas walls!) as well as more traditional hotel rooms inside the main farmhouse. Each one offers a unique experience; some have fireplaces, while some have roll-top baths and others, rooftop terraces. They are all light and airy, and decked out beautifully with furniture handcrafted by the lodge’s resident carpenters.

It is not without cause that Nairobi is the safari capital of East Africa. In the background, you will find the Hemmingway’s green hills standing watch over the city. You will find lakes teeming with birdlife, historic volcanic sites, and baboon infested territories a little distance outside the city.

1. Nairobi National Park

Nairobi is a unique city with a national park right in the heart of the hustle and bustle. What’s more, Nairobi National Park has lions, cheetahs, and rhinos in an expansive area of about 117 square kilometers. Labeled among the best safari parks in East Africa, it lives up to its fame. In addition to the wild predators like the African hyenas, you will meet impalas and wildebeests. Rhinos also live in the park, which is a rare spectacle for any city in the world. Of the Big Five family, only elephants are missing. The drive to the park is 30 minutes on average, making it a convenient destination if you plan to visit a safari park near Nairobi. There is hardly a Kenyan safari itinerary that does not include Nairobi National Park either as a stopover spot or a final destination.

The park is located about 125 km from the city center and hosts a generous population of zebras and giraffes. Additionally, baboons inhabit the area in huge numbers, often seen traveling in troops. It is the only park near Nairobi where visitors can cycle as they tour the beautiful landscape. Imagine riding past buffalos or at the edge of deep gorges where you could plummet to your death instantly. The experience at Hell’s gate is like no other, especially for an on-foot African safari. 3. Mt Longonot National Park

Driving to Mt Longonot National Park will take you west from Nairobi. Along the way, you will witness the gradual change in the landscape. You can see the glittering surfaces of lakes and the open mouths of volcanic craters from a distance. The weather here is hot and dry.

Mt Longonot National Park sits at the top of the mountain overlooking the magnanimous crater measuring 1000 meters deep. When you get to the top, you will be at 2776m above sea level. Since most people are not aware of the park’s thrills and experiences, it offers a perfect spot for seclusion and an excellent getaway from the rush of life. Unlike the other classic safari experience destinations, Mt Longonot Park provides the best hiking experiences. Trekking through the thick forests, ascending or descending the steep volcanic slopes and aerial views from the edge of the crater are all worth the long tasking hike.

•            Distance from Nairobi: 83km/51mi

•            Accommodation: Campsite just outside the park or lodges in the nearby towns.

4. Lake Nakuru National Park

The other one place apart from Nairobi National Park where you can guarantee an exceptional rhino experience is three hours away at Lake Nakuru National Park. Both the white and black rhinos roam the area freely, with sightings in the morning and late evening. Baboons are in plenty here, covering almost every inch of the park, but to see lions will take a bit of good luck and perfect timing. Locals claim that the lions have exceptional tree climbing skills, so be on the lookout for one on the trees. Lake Nakuru is a hotspot for bird watching. With thousands of flamingos and other species swarming the lake more than anywhere else in the country, you are sure to have a thrilling adventure. Seeing these birds cover the entire expanse of the lake and as they fly in and out in massive clouds is a memorable experience. Even during the off-peak season, the lake is still bustling with birdlife sufficient to keep anyone engaged and entertained.

•            Distance from Nairobi: 180km/111mi

•            Accommodation: Within the city of Nakuru, there are lodges and hotels for any budget. Accommodation within the park is available but at higher prices than in the city.

•            Activities: There are no game walks in the park, so safaris are by driving around. Menengai Crater is easily accessible from Nakuru National Park, or you can set your sights on the Hyrax hill prehistoric site just nearby.

5. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is so positioned to give you an experience of a lifetime. Behind it is the towering Mount Kenya and around is a vast landscape of stunning grassland. Fever trees scattered within the plains add to the beauty. Though located a long distance from Nairobi, the adventure it offers more than covers up for the trip. Dreamy safari lodges within the conservancy will fuel your passion for wild adventures at the end of each day. Wild animals present include elephants known here for their aggressive behavior, rhinos, buffalos, lions, and leopards. Game drives are the highlights of every day. Though they leave tourists exhausted, the thrill lasts a lifetime.

The story of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy will inspire your heart. As you tour the area, you will be helping one of the best community conservation projects in Africa. You will become part of the driving force towards progressive conservation policies and sustainable community development. FAQS ABOUT SAFARI PARKS AND GAME RESERVES NEAR NAIROBI

What is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari?

The weather affects the safari in Kenya, just like it does everywhere else. Based on factors such as animal behavior, migration patterns, water availability, etc., the seasons change from high to low. Year-round attractions and activities are offered in the parks and reserves to suit your interests and availability. For wildlife viewing and other activities, the best times to visit the parks are from July to December or from December to March, respectively, which typically correspond to regional climate conditions.

Name some animals you can see in Game reserves near Nairobi.

When visiting Kenya’s game reserves, which are home to an incredible variety of wildlife, visitors may see a wide variety of animals. Kenya is one of the best locations to see these magnificent animals in the wild. They are present in many of Kenya’s game reserves, most notably the Masai Mara National Reserve. The tall, lean giraffe is another popular animal in Kenya. Giraffe sightings are common in Kenya’s vast savannahs, much like they are in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Kenya is home to some of the most magnificent lions on the planet. They are found in many of Kenya’s game reserves, most notably the Maasai Mara National Reserve , where you can frequently see them pursuing their prey.

Which are the airlines that have service to Kenya?

From Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a number of international airlines, including Kenya Airways, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, and Swissair, frequently fly into Europe. Several airlines, including American Airlines and Delta, offer connections from North America to Europe. Air India, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, Egypt Air, and South African Airways are some additional carriers.

Are the safari guides and lodge staff adequately trained to deal with emergencies?

In the extremely unlikely event of illness or injury, the driver guides and the majority of camp and lodge staff are trained in first aid procedures. If you require medical travel insurance, we suggest that you purchase a policy with an additional benefit for emergency medical evacuation. In the event of a medical emergency, an airplane can be dispatched to a resort or a camp. There are top-notch medical facilities in the larger towns and cities if you require medical attention while traveling.

On safari in Nairobi National Park

Morning and evening game drives to explore the diversity and beauty of the place we call home.

A typical day on safari

Morning and evening game-drives are included in your stay with us at Ololo for non-residents.

Morning game-drives at Ololo typically start at 6am, returning for a late breakfast, and the afternoon drives begin at 4 - 4.30pm.

We are able to do a wake-up call to your room with coffee, tea or hot chocolate & banana bread for the morning game-drives before you get going.

Your guide will be happy to discuss how long you hope to be out and what aspects of the park you are interested in. Game-drives occasionally may be on a shared basis and some groups or individuals may be asked to join others.

Background on Nairobi National Park

There is nothing more bizarre, and beautiful, than a tower of giraffe moving gracefully along a ridge, with the backdrop of city skyscrapers. This is a common scene for the Northern side of Nairobi National Park, where parts of the bustling city border the 117km-squared natural ecosystem.

Boasting more than 80 species of mammal, including lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard, not to mention the remarkable 516 species of bird recorded in the park, it is easy to forget you’re only 45 minutes from one of the largest cities in Africa. And that is what we love about our home, Ololo Lodge. Being only 45 minutes from the international airport, our guests spend most of this travel time in the park, spotting giraffe and herds of zebra after 20 minutes of leaving the terminal.

But it’s not just it’s unique setting that makes Nairobi National Park stand out. NNP is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries, being one of the few parks where guests can witness a black rhino in its natural habitat. From the open savannah plains to the gorges along the Mbagathi river, on which Ololo Lodge sits, the rhino are hard to miss, and you’ll never forget the first time you witness their powerful beauty.

When discussing Nairobi National Park it is hard not to mention Athi Dam, one of our favourite places in the park. From the dam you can sit back and watch the animals around you as they come in for a drink, cautious of crocodiles that reside in the waters. You’ll hear the hippos grunting in the background as they splash and fight in the water, it’s a place of serenity contrasted by the action around you.

So no matter what part of Nairobi National Park you find yourself in, you’ll get to experience diverse landscapes with even more diverse wildlife. And that’s what we love about our home; no two safaris are ever the same, it’s a world of unpredictability. The only thing that’s certain is that after your first visit to Nairobi National Park, you’ll be counting down the days until you return.

Ololo Safari Lodge

TripAdvisor

‘Ololo’ is an Australian family owned safari lodge, which combines the atmosphere and style of bush living while offering all the convenience and amenities of a city hotel. Ololo is picturesquely positioned on the banks of the Mbagathe River on the southern border of the Nairobi National Park, Set on twenty acres with beautiful established old gardens.

Ololo’s partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service allows full park access. Guests can be transferred to both international and local airports, avoiding the notorious city traffic and at the same time can experience the delights of one of the world's more unique national parks. Ololo Lodge is built around a traditional colonial farmhouse that has been carefully restored and extended by the owners. The lodge has become an iconic blend of classic old Africa with a slightly more modern eclectic twist.

The lodge is a mere 45-minute drive through the park from Nairobi and both main airports, yet the lodge's secluded location feels like a world away. Set on a productive 20 acre working farm Ololo offers the joys of delicious ‘paddock to plate’ fresh ingredients.

The accommodation at Ololo ranges from the farm's old converted stables, our tented cottages under makuti thatch and to the original suites in the main house of the lodge.

Great food, great staff, great service. At first, I thought the price was a bit high, but when you factor in the pickup from the airport, the included safari drives, the excellent meals and care (my dinner was special ordered, and waiting hot for me when I arrived after 10pm, with a 'free' night safari through the game park as my flight was delayed). the rooms were well appointed, and it was fun staying in the old stables (refurbished of course).

Nyati Hill Cottages

Boasting a swimming pool, a garden, a terrace and views of the garden, Nyati Hill Cottages is situated in Nairobi and features accommodation with free WiFi. The lodge provides an ironing service, as well as business facilities like fax and photocopying.

Excellent location near to all of the attractions and with direct viewing into National park! A few animals even wandered over near to the property! Safe and Secure! We had 3 huts for our family of 5 (2 were bedrooms with bathrooms, 1 for kitchen & dining). Chalo was extremely attentive in arranging all of our taxis/day drivers and ordering food for lunch and dinner. Definitely recommend!
