Lake Juneau Safari Park

by Sam Irwin

April 18, 2013

Wild Things: And how they came from Africa to Avoyelles

Don't worry that you’ve never heard about Lake Juneau Safari Park—it’s not really a secret, but Juli and Stewart Juneau, founders of the certified wildlife habitat, don’t go out of their way to publicize it either.

Lake Juneau Safari Park has no regular hours—because the park is open by invitation only— intended to benefit children who may have never seen exotic animals like a blue wildebeest, American bison, zebra, red kangaroo, nilgai, elk, eight different species of deer, lamas, alpacas, reindeer and many, many others. They may never have seen wilderness like Lake Juneau’s fifteen hundred acres or may never have slept overnight in an African Village tented cabin before.

Located on the eastern side of the Bayou Des Glaises levee, which famously gave way to the Mississippi River flood waters in 1927, Lake Juneau Safari Resort is in a part of eastern Avoyelles Parish where there are no towns, but there are plenty of wildlife management areas—the Grassy Lake State Wildlife Management Area, Pomme de Terre State Wildlife Management Area and Spring Bayou State Wildlife Management Area. See a pattern developing? Wildlife is the operative word.

One of ten children, Stewart Juneau’s family has been in Avoyelles Parish since 1755.

“We’re one of the original families of Avoyelles Parish,” he said. A hotelier and real estate developer, Stewart splits his time between there and New Orleans.

“I’m a country boy at heart, but I could not stay in New Orleans if I didn’t have this place in the country to come to.”

The Juneau’s place in the country came out of their love of Africa, a continent they have visited many times. Of the two, Juli was the experienced Africa hand. She had previously explored Africa via donkey cart, boat, barge and train for thirty months before she met Stewart. In 2003, a call to Africa was sent to the Juneaus from Bill Clinton. Yes, that Bill Clinton.

“Juli and I went on a mission to Africa to help Bill Clinton set up the International AIDS Trust in Africa,” Stewart said. Nelson Mandela was also one of the organizers.

Heady company, Bill and Nelson, but even those that travel in the highest circles are not immune from personal loss. Stewart’s mother died around this time.

The loss of his mother, coupled with their first-hand experience of the incredible poverty of many African children, led the Juneaus to create this new African setting in Avoyelles to benefit the underprivileged and honor his mother’s love of family and children.

Lake Juneau Safari Park was born and quietly began serving the needs of Louisiana children shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. Busloads of kids displaced by Katrina were hosted with barbecues and safari trail rides as the camp took shape. The official grand opening of the park was in 2006.

What can a group expect from Lake Juneau Safari Park?

Exotic wildlife, lots of exotic wildlife—and fun. The resort is host to more than eighty mammal and bird species, including American bison, water buffalos, wallabies, kangaroos, lamas, reindeers, beefalo, oryx, antelopes, emus, zebras, peacocks, watusi—even giant loggerhead turtles.

Safari guests enter the wilderness from Highway 1 and cross over the Big Bend protection levee near Hamburg. They’ll drive along a lonely three-mile bayou road lined with bottomland hardwood trees and palmettos past wheat and soybean fields.

As you get closer to the main gates of the wildlife park, newly planted magnolias line the road. A gateway guarded by two statuary elephants heralds your arrival. Once inside the gates, you’ll spy kangaroos loafing about in pastures, zebras munching on feed from the feeders and wildebeests running about wildly. Safari rides, petting zoo, a stay in the African Village and exotic treehouses await.

“We like to host an organized group of children, like a 4-H club, a church group or inner city kids, for an extended weekend,” Stewart said. “When we do that, we find we can begin teaching the children about the animals and their environment right away. We provide some day tours. We also do outreach by loading animals into trailers and visiting nursing homes and places like that so the adults and children can interact with the animals.”

The Juneaus pay all the expenses for an invited group which is why donors and donations are always welcome. A group of twelve to sixteen is optimum, but Juli has accomodated forty Boy Scouts who wanted to pitched their tents on the grounds.

“The kids already can identify a lot of the animals from watching The Lion King,” Juli said. “They know what a wildebeest is.”

Hay is stacked on the highest ground available and underneath the resort’s many curious buildings, which are elevated twenty feet above the ground in case there is a flood.

Speaking of floods, the protection levees usually keep floodwater out, but in 2011 high water from the Mississippi River and the opening of the Morganza Spillway threatened the animals. Stewart and his extended family formed an animal roundup posse and, using four-wheelers instead of horses, herded all the animals into wagons for transport to other exotic animal farm locations in neighboring states. Berms were built to create high land for the animals that couldn’t be found and moved.

Alas, the stress of moving created hardship for the animals and a small percentage were lost. Their wonderful giraffe died, not directly from the trauma of the evacuation, but from the general stress created by the move.

“These are not domesticated animals,” Stewart said. “They’re wild animals and they don’t adapt like cattle when they have to be moved.”

Children adapt to the Lake Juneau Safari Park freely, however, and Juli and Stewart Juneau will do everything they can to accommodate them.

Details. Details. Details.

The World’s Top Sustainable Stays for the Conscious Traveler

These hotels prove that luxury doesn’t have to cost the earth, offering a guilt-free ticket to paradise that doesn’t skimp on pampering or planet-saving.

safari resort of lake resort

In a world where "eco-friendly" has become as trendy as avocado toast, the hospitality industry is stepping up its game, tossing greenwashing aside for genuine earth-loving initiatives . The modern traveler isn't wooed by the mere absence of plastic straws or a lonely recycling bin in the corner. They're scouting for true environmental guardians—hotels that are not just dipping their toes, but diving headfirst into the sustainability pool.

With the hotel industry's hefty 289,700-ton annual waste line and a carbon footprint that's hard to ignore, the call for an eco-revolution is louder than ever. We're talking about more than just slapping solar panels on the roof or offering organic cotton sheets. This is about integrating eco-smarts from the ground up: energy efficiency that's not an afterthought, waste management that doesn't end at the bin and food that's so local it practically walks onto your plate.

Sustainability isn’t simply about the eco-chic architecture or green operations at these hotels. It's also about embracing the neighborhood, from giving back to local communities and stirring up job opportunities, to championing cultural heritage with gusto. They buddy up with conservation groups to shield the local fauna and flora, turning guests into eco-warriors with hands-on conservation gigs and deep dives into the area’s one-of-a-kind biodiversity. It’s a full-circle eco-love affair, proving that saving the planet can be part of your vacation itinerary.

So, let's raise a glass (a reusable one, of course) to the very best sustainable hotels around the world. They're proving that luxury doesn't have to cost the earth, offering a guilt-free ticket to paradise that doesn't skimp on pampering or planet-saving. If you’re ready for your next green getaway, consider these trailblazers who are setting the new gold standard for travel that's as kind to the globe as it is glamorous.

From your wooden terrace, you might catch glimpses of tanagers or kiskadees. Enter the Sukha Spa, a treetop sanctuary set against the backdrop of the Arenal Volcano, offering personalized wellness journeys that connect you with nature. And for those looking to further their wellness journey, the well-equipped volcano-facing gym offers quite the motivation.

  • 2352 Coles Bay Rd, Coles Bay TAS 7215, Australia

Saffire Freycinet is a pioneer in eco-tourism, merging exhilarating experiences with sustainable opulence that will leave you in awe...and perhaps even inspire some tree-hugging. While the 20 stylish suites showcase minimalist timber designs and offer breathtaking views of the Hazards Mountains, Saffire's commitment to sustainability goes beyond its architectural beauty. The resort actively supports local conservation efforts, including the Save the Devil program to aid the endangered Tasmanian Devil and the Raptor Refuge for the protection of Tasmania's distinctive wildlife . Adventure awaits with activities like indigenous-led hikes through ancient forests, beekeeping and oyster farming.

  • Bawah Reserve, Anambas Archipelago, Indonesia

Bawah Reserve, an ultra-luxe private island tucked away in Indonesia's secluded Anambas archipelago, is an eco-enthusiast's paradise. Here, unplugging is the norm—no TVs, just three crystal-clear lagoons, untamed jungle and an open-air spa. But don't be fooled by the Robinson Crusoe vibe; this eco-oasis offers five-star luxury, from beachfront eateries serving Indonesian delights to the organic, machinery-free architecture by Singapore's Sim Boon Yang. Envision elegant bamboo bungalows and a jetty designed to pamper the coral reefs. Bawah stands out as Indonesia's first island resort powered by renewable energy, crafted by hand with sustainable bamboo and recycled materials like driftwood and copper. The water is locally sourced, recycled and solar-heated. The icing on the cake? Profits are poured into the Anambas Foundation to elevate the local community.

  • 500 Sargent Dr, New Haven, CT 06511

A part of Hilton's Tapestry Collection, This modern marvel of sustainability boasts Passive House and LEED Platinum certifications, running entirely on 100 percent renewable energy, courtesy of over 1,000 rooftop solar panels. The hotel's green design isn't just for sustainability marks—it enhances guest comfort. Ultra-efficient triple-glazed windows stabilize room temperatures and significantly reduce noise. Built-in motorized shades ensure a restful sleep. For those driving electric cars, there are 12 Tesla Superchargers and universal level-two chargers available in the lot.

Built from the desert's own clay, this adobe retreat is a star-gazer's dream, offering tranquility under the vast Atacama sky. Rooms, some with stunning Licancabur volcano views, are linked by verdant pathways, weaving a serene maze. The wellness center at Our Habitas offers soul-soothing treatments, while the restaurant serves up Chilean delights from a traditional clay oven. Each stay funds local hospitality training and jobs through the property's Rise initiative. Construction prioritized tree protection and for every plank used, a tree was planted. Local artisans craft all furnishings, supporting Chilean businesses. The hotel champions local sourcing, bans single-use plastics and minimizes resource use.

  • Lewannick, Launceston PL15 7QQ, United Kingdom

Coombeshead Farm in the Cornish countryside is a slice of pastoral paradise. As part of Cornwall's Farm Net Zero program, Coombeshead is on a mission to hit its sustainability target within five years, championing traditional farming methods that capture carbon in the soil.

  • Uvala Maslinica 11, 21460, Stari Grad, Croatia

Nestled on Hvar's picturesque north coast, Maslina’s clever design seamlessly integrates into the landscape, featuring pine slats, planted roofs and low-lying buildings that create a sense of seclusion while remaining just a short stroll from Stari Grad. The use of Croatian oak, terracotta, marble and limestone in the spacious interiors at this Relais & Châteaux property showcases a nature-inspired elegance that pays homage to local craftsmanship. Maslina's eco-friendly initiatives are as impressive as its luxurious amenities. The resort prioritizes low visual impact, energy efficiency through heat pumps and LED lights and the use of refillable organic and locally sourced bath products. Food waste is also composted, while water waste is processed in sealed bio tanks.

  • Gaafar Mountain, Siwa Matrouh Governorate, Egypt

Adrère Amellal, a sustainable illusion on the edge of Lake Siwa, is an eco-utopia rising from the desert sands. This rustic 40-room retreat ditches plastic and electricity for spring water and abodes built of kerchief (a blend of mud and salt). It melds with the dunes and palm oasis, offering a bucket list-worthy stay with farm-to-table delights grown steps away from where they’re served and hand-rolled beeswax candles lighting the scene by night. The trek to this ultra-secluded hotel is an epic adventure—eight hours by road or a hop on a chartered flight from Cairo—but it's a journey worth every second.

  • Kisawa Sanctuary Benguerra Island Inhambane, 1304, Mozambique

Kisawa Sanctuary, a 750-acre eco-resort on Mozambique's breathtaking Benguerra Island, offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. The resort's architecture showcases traditional Mozambican weaving, thatching and carpentry, incorporating local timber and the handiwork of artisans from the archipelago. By partnering with and financially supporting the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies, an ocean observatory on the other side of the island, Kisawa Sanctuary actively contributes to the preservation of the region's ecosystem. The resort's commitment to sustainability is also evident in its culinary offerings, with produce sourced from its own permaculture gardens or from farmers and suppliers within a 300-mile radius. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary 60-minute massage to help shake off any jet lag and start their stay in blissful relaxation.

  • Ol Derkesi Community Conservancy, Kenya

Offering a glimpse into the golden age of safari travel , Cottar's has evolved over more than a century to become a leader in sustainable tourism. Powered entirely by solar energy, the camp boasts an on-site wastewater treatment system that ensures minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem. As one of only nine Global Ecosphere Retreats worldwide, the camp operates under "The Long Run's 4Cs" philosophy: Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce. Each guest's stay directly contributes to the camp's impressive sustainability efforts, including restoring the natural environment, protecting biodiversity, combating poaching and supporting local healthcare and education. The camp's crowning achievement is the 7,608-acre Olderkesi Conservancy, leased from the Maasai community to create a standout conservation model. By paying rent to the Maasai, Cottar's ensures a steady income for the community, reducing their reliance on farming and fostering a harmonious relationship with the wildlife. It's a win-win situation: the Maasai protect the animals and the conservancy thrives.

  • Kurhausstrasse 65, 8032 Zürich, Switzerland

Crowned a "Sustainability Leader" by the Leading Hotels of the World , The Dolder Grand is an eco-pioneer setting the standard for green luxury. Boasting top-notch Level III status in the Swisstainable program , it's leading the charge in eco-friendly indulgence. As a member of the "Responsible Hotels of Switzerland," the property opts to use organic, Fairtrade linens and paper-saving digital check-ins, while the fitness area ditches plastic bottles for water fountains and reusable containers. In the sprawling spa  all-natural and cruelty-free Amala products are used. Even the hotel's fashion sense is green, with the sustainable brand "Back Label The Wellnesswear" setting the trend in eco-chic. But the real game-changer is the hotel's geothermal system, which uses 70 probes buried 499 feet deep to cut energy consumption in half. And for that extra green touch, all electricity comes from 100 percent Swiss hydroelectric power.

Only on a Kenyan safari could you see an elephant wander freely past a football pitch

Elephants drinking at a watering hole by Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge

I had just snapped a photo of an elephant wandering in the fields a few metres away from where a football match was being played, when a man in a truck pulled up next to me and pointed at my camera.

Through a grin as wide as the Great Rift valley, he shouted: ‘When you post that photo, make sure you write “only in Africa”.’

I had seen lions, elephants and giraffes, explored sacred forests and watched beautiful sunsets throughout my trip to Kenya , but nothing turned my head so quickly, or encompassed the sheer awe and unique beauty of this country more than that moment.

An elephant passing by a football match

There’s a sense in Kenyan culture – far removed from the hustle and bustle of the West – that all will work out, one immortalised in media as the Swahili phrase Hakuna Matata . Will it rain today? We don’t know, we’ll make do. A delayed flight ? No worries, you’ll get to your destination eventually. No lion sightings today? Never mind, let’s try again tomorrow.

Even an elephant as your backdrop while having a kick about brings a wry smile from the locals, a matter-of-fact attitude that this is Kenya , this is Africa, all is as it should be, and the unexpected is the only thing that is expected.

On a safari journey

I had just finished four days of a safari trip as part of a Tui package to Kenya billed as a cheaper and more accessible travel package for those looking to explore the country’s famed nature reserves.

The concept offers travellers a taste of the Kenyan coast and the majesty of its national parks with all the scenery, wildlife and culture that make this part of the world so special.

Jeremy looking out of a safari truck

To experience a safari (a Swahili word meaning ‘journey’) is the most spectacular example of having to accept what you get you get. On some game drives, we were searching the horizon – every tree and shade of grass – for any sight of some of Kenya’s most famous animals. Sometimes hours might go by when it’s just you, your jeep, and the Kenyan wilderness.

But that can all change in an instant.

One day into our safari in the tranquil Tsavo East National Park, our driver Jimmy (who had the cool air about him of a prime poker player) suddenly reversed away from where we had been observing an elephant to speed back down the road. He had just been radioed that a lioness and her cubs had come out of the long grass.

a baby lion cub

Seeing a tiny lion cub in the wild roar a beautifully pathetic roar in front of its siblings, golden fur and deep orange eyes and all, was a moment that took our breath away, locked it somewhere five minutes down the road, and didn’t return it to us until the lions had finally disappeared back within the grass.

Such sightings are rare, but that’s why you take the risk and go on a safari : for moments like that.

a giraffe in tsavo east national park with mountains behind

Much more frequent sightings include elephants, giraffes, wildebeests, antelopes and a variety of exotic birds (you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen a secretary bird doing its best Monty Python silly walk impression).

We even found numerous hippos yawning their gigantic heads out of the water before splashing them back down again.

There’s no guarantee to see anything, but the fact we were no longer surprised to spot elephants two days into our trip reflects how likely it is that you are to come across them.

TUI's Kenya package

TUI is offering a  Kenya taster safari and stay  package exploring the beautiful Mombasa coast and Kenya’s national parks on safari for a total of 9 nights.

From £2742 per person travelling on October 3, the package includes:

  • Indirect flights with British Airways
  • 23kg luggage and transfers
  • Full board five-night safari tour
  • Choice of all-inclusive or half board four-night beach stay at a choice of resorts

Beyond the animals

However, safaris are more than just the wildlife. For every ‘big five’ animal you don’t get to see is an awe-striking vista; miles of yellow grass plains basking in the golden dawn rays and mountains stretching out behind every tree.

There are a variety of incredible lodges to make the most of Kenya’s parks, and TUI have picked some of the most beautiful.

The rustic verandas outside each room of the Ashnil Aruba Lodge offer a serene Tsavo East sunrise every morning, with huge flutters of birds flying over the trees surrounding it. The only thing missing is a Hans Zimmer score.

sunrise at Ashnil Aruba Lodge

Meanwhile, the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, with its cathedral-like dining space facing out over a watering hole and backdropped by mountains upon mountains, is something out of a photographer’s dream.

But the crowning glory of Kenya’s safari accommodations is undoubtedly Salt Lick in Taita Hills. A small colony of Swiss-like towers on stone stilts, connected by wooden suspension bridges over a small lake, it’s as unique a lodge design that I have ever seen.

Elephants next to football pitches and lion cubs aside, possibly my favourite moment of the trip was waking up to see the sun rise up from Salt Lick’s rooftop bar.

salt lick safari lodge with towers on stilts over looking a watering hole

To a soundtrack of crickets sleeping and birds awakening, with rows of deep blue mist stretching right back across the fields to the mountain tops, the sun, majestically, began to reveal itself.

With a coffee in hand, I stared at the rays reflecting over the water as elephants began to make their way to drink. I knew I had never experienced a morning quite like that, and am unlikely to ever do so again.

Coastal living

TUI’s package picks the coastal region surrounding the city of Mombasa as the trip’s ‘sit-back-and-relax’ location, and has a list of serene resorts and hotels to stay at (as well as featuring some of Kenya’s most interesting cultural experiences).

Mombasa, which means ‘fighting island’, is a busy city featuring multiple historical landmarks and museums. The Swaminarayan Temple is one of them, and this awe-inspiring example of Hindu architecture in Kenya is well worth a visit, embodying the influence Indian immigration has had on the country (as well as its food).

But it is Fort Jesus – a huge fortress built in the shape of a man by the Portuguese over 400 years ago – that steals the show in Mombasa. Majestic and imposing, with canons facing off to sea in all directions speaking directly to Mombasa’s ‘fighting’ name, it’s a must-see for fans of historical warfare.

a sculpture of a maasai man from within fort jesus

You can also choose to book side excursions to visit local community projects, such as the Kaya Kinondo Forest, a sacred forest to the local Digo Mijikenda tribe and the first Kaya to open to the public. The Digo tribe also organises visits to their villages. These are important to counteract the luxury of the resorts, but tourists are reminded to be considerate and respectful (standard practice such as asking for permission for photos should apply).

Another particular highlight was the Pallet Cafe in Diani, a charming beach-side restaurant which supports hearing-impaired people in the hospitality industry.

Getting from the UK to Kenya

While non-stop flights – which take around 8 hours and 35 minutes – run weekly from London to Nairobi, routes to Mombasa typically require a stopover and can take upwards of 11 hours.

Passengers from the UK can take a British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Nairobi before travelling via Kenya Airways to Moi International Airport in Mombasa, a journey totalling around 13 hours.

Many of the resorts here – particularly those on Diani Beach – take inspiration from both local identity and past colonial architecture.

Baobab Beach Resort & Spa is a luxurious hotel just south of Mombasa, with its infinity pools and vast site stretching far across the beach like the branches of the famous baobab trees it’s named after. Perfect for a breather. But it is further north on Shanzu Beach where you’ll find the even quieter and more quaint spots to stay.

The infinity pool sunrise at Baobab Beach Resort & Spa

Serena Beach Resort was our beautiful last stop before we headed on safari, and was one of my all-time favourite hotel stays. Built to resemble a Swahili village, wood and palm trees are found at every turn and bright pink bougainvillaea are dotted all over the white stone walls. The distant sound of the trees swaying in the coastal breeze was the ultimate background noise to drift off to, ready to taste safari.

the sunrise by mount Kilimanjaro

There are few words to describe what a tourist will take away from a brief glimpse of Kenya. It is overwhelming in its natural beauty, a paradox of serenity and mayhem. It is a country where its traditions co-exist with modernity, where its food and its buildings are influenced by different continents. But it is Kenya’s canvas of vibrant, striking images that stick with you long after you’ve left. Picture this:

Go glamping and experience nature in style: 5 sites to book this summer

safari resort of lake resort

If you're looking to spend some time in the great outdoors, but aren't a fan of the classic tent and sleeping bag combo, it's time to give glamping a try.

The Northeast is home to some of the most beautiful forests and mountains, and there's an abundance of glampsites — "glamour" + "camping" = "glamping" — that offer an immersive nature experience with the benefit of modern, luxurious living. But, these sites do book up fast, so if you're looking to level up your camping trip this summer, now's the time to act.

Book your summer glamping trip at one of these five nearby sites:

Adirondack Safari, New York

If you don't mind a trip that involves a bit of driving, consider booking a stay at Adirondack Safari in Warrensburg, New York. Recently recognized as the eighth-best glamping destination in the nation by The Dyrt, Adirondack Safari is a sprawling luxury-tent camping site located along Schroon River and just minutes from Lake George.

From June 14 to Sept. 2, guests are invited to stay in one of the sites six differently-themed tent styles , including Classic, Adirondack, Island, India, Luxe and Native American. Each tent also comes with all of your glamping necessities, including queen beds with bedding, rugs, lamps, a fan, an outdoor fire pit, a charcoal grill and covered picnic tables.

Adirondack Safari also offers daily activities that are included with your stay, including outdoor movies, river tubing, volleyball, corn hole and live entertainment. Paint classes led by local artists are also held daily at 4 p.m. for an additional $20 per person. And, if you'd like to explore outside of the glampgrounds, there's a variety of local attractions nearby.

Info: Starting rates range from $159 to $249 a night based on the number of guests and booking dates. A two-night minimum stay is required for all bookings.

Go: 346 Schroon River Road, Warrensburg; 518-600-1026, adirondacksafari.com .

Six Flags Savannah Sunset Resort & Spa, Jackson

Open for the first time this summer is the Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. This is the ultimate glamping adventure, but with a twist: Your cabin will be located in the middle of the amusement park's Wild Safari, which is home to more than 1,200 animals across 350 acres.

With a total of 20 luxury suites that can fit up to six people each, a stay at the Savannah Sunset Resort and Spa includes breakfast, daily morning giraffe feedings, evening events, daily tickets for each Six Flags Great Adventure park for every guest and the chance to book a VIP tour.

Info: Rates start at $600 per night for the couples glamping suite, and increase for larger rooms and safari views. A two-night minimum stay is required for all bookings.

Go: 1 Six Flags Blvd., Jackson; 732-928-2000, sixflags.com/savannahsunset .

Moon Valley Campground, Vernon Township

For an option that's a little closer to home, but no less grand and luxurious, look no further than Moon Valley Campground. Located at the base of Wawayanda mountain between the Stairway to Heaven and Pochuck Boardwalk hikes on the Appalachian Trail, Moon Valley Campground offers a relaxing getaway in style.

Here, you can choose between five different camping sites, including The Lookout, Hilltop Hideaway and Heavens Landing. Each of these sites include a queen bed with fresh bedding, a pop-up tent for extra guests, a battery bank and a battery-operated fan, as well as a fire pit and picnic table.

Guests can also visit the Valley Farmers Cooperative at the entrance of the property, which sells local grass-fed meats and artisanal farm goods, or take a walk to nearby Heaven Hill Farms for farm goods and produce, as well as family-friendly seasonal activities.

Info: Rates range from $150 to $225 per night for the campground's more upscale sites, and rates are $40 per night for a basic camping site. A two-night minimum stay is required for all bookings.

Go: 442 Route 94, Vernon Township; 973-900-2773, moonvalleycampground.com .

AutoCamp Catskills, Saugerties

Another glamping site that requires a trip to upstate New York − but is totally worth it − is AutoCamp Catskills in Saugerties, New York.

The site offers five different accommodation styles, including airstreams, cabins, family cabins, basecamps and luxury tents. Each option includes a flat-screen TV with a Bluetooth audio system, a kitchenette with cooking and storage essentials, a modern spa-inspired bathroom, luxury bath products and towels, as well as heating and air conditioning.

For food, you can enjoy a la carte option from the site's kitchen and general store. And for entertainment, you can explore the historic towns of Woodstock and Saugerties, hike the many trails throughout the Catskill Mountains, relax at the site's classic Hudson Valley-style Clubhouse or participate in AutoCamp activities like forest bathing, natural dyeing, yoga and weekly campfire music.

Info: Starting rates range from $151 to $458 a night based on the number of guests and booking dates.

Go: 882 Route 212, Saugerties; 866-921-7440, autocamp.com/location/catskills/ .

Panther Lake Camping Resort, Andover

Tucked away in the 160 wooded acres surrounding the 45-acre Panther Lake, Panther Lake Camping Resort gives you the traditional camping experience with upscale cabin living.

With seven different cabin floorplans that include amenities like full-sized refrigerators, stoves and ovens, coffee makers, heating and air-conditioning, as well as picnic tables, fire rings and grills outside, you'll feel right at home. The cabins don't include linens though, so be sure to pack necessities like sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, dish soap and paper products.

Panther Lake Camping Resort also has a ton of activities available, like volleyball, tennis and pickleball courts, as well as a game room, fishing dock and a hiking trail.

Info: Starting rates for cabins range from $155 to $295 on regular days and $175 to $315 during holidays and special events.

Go: 6 Panther Lake Campground Road, Byram Township; 973-347-4440, pantherlakecampingresort.com .

Florida GOP executive director found at resort following recent disappearance, police say

safari resort of lake resort

While family, friends, and law enforcement searched last week for George Riley Jr., the missing executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, Riley had checked himself into a Lake Buena Vista spa.

According to an Osceola County Sheriff’s report, released to the USA TODAY Network-Florida this week, Riley was found last Friday at the B Resort and Spa, three days after he was reported missing. He was in good health but under the influence of alcohol, the report said.

Earlier in the week, Riley had been evicted from the Kissimmee Hampton Inn after a four-day stay for “excessive drinking" and damage to the room. Riley didn't object when told he would be charged extra because the room needing a deep cleaning.

The day before, Riley’s family had filed a missing person report with law enforcement. Deputies were advised that Riley had a medical condition and had never gone so long without communication. The medical condition and medication Riley takes were redacted in the released report.

Deputies used cell tower pings to triangulate Riley’s phone location, according to the report. When found at the B Resort and Spa, deputies said although Riley was under the influence of alcohol, he was not erratic, posed no threat to harm himself or others, and answered questions.

They then informed his family he was no longer a missing person and closed the case.

George Riley was recently named executive director of the Florida GOP

The 43-year-old Riley was appointed executive director of the Republican Party in February, a position he previously held 2016-19.

In the 2018 election cycle, Riley put into place a voter registration initiative called "Project Majority Red" that flipped ten counties from Democratic to Republican majorities, news reports show. He also directed the spending of more than $85 million on statewide campaigns.

In a phone call with the Tampa Bay Times, Riley apologized for going missing and trashing the hired room: “I’m deeply sorry. I have been dealing with alcoholism and mental health issues,” he said, according to the Times.

Riley specifically apologized to the Hampton Inn staff for his behavior, promised to pay any damages, and pledged to seek help so he “can be a better father, a better person and a better all-around employee.”

Kari Lake pulls in record sum at Trump's resort for her Senate campaign

safari resort of lake resort

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake’s campaign said it raised $1 million at a fundraiser at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in an event intended to boost her financial competitiveness.

With approving words from Trump and jokes from a trio of conservative comedians Wednesday, Lake pulled in a total it billed as the most collected at Trump’s resort for a non-incumbent Senate candidate.

The emphasis on the money collected in Florida comes as Lake still hasn’t announced her first-quarter fundraising numbers. The Arizona U.S. Senate race is likely to draw hundreds of millions of dollars in spending from the candidates, political parties and groups trying to tip the election.

“We were honored by the support we received from Arizonans who joined us at our historic event at Mar-A-Lago last night, as well as the strong support from patriots across the nation who know that the Senate majority runs through Arizona and don’t want to see a Far-Left socialist like Ruben Gallego in the U.S. Senate,” Lake’s campaign said in a statement Thursday.

“Arizonans want to see Senator Kari Lake because they know that she will work to secure the border and get our economy back on track.”

Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, who is also running for the GOP nomination, has yet to announce his latest quarterly fundraising figures.

U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego , D-Ariz., the only prominent Democrat running for the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., said earlier this week his campaign raised $7.5 million between January and March. That is more than double his biggest quarterly haul since entering the race in January 2023 and pushes his available cash to $9.6 million.

Lake entered the race in October after months of anticipation that she would do so. In her first quarter of fundraising, Lake’s campaign took in $2.1 million and finished with $1 million in cash and $308,000 in debt.

Lake is trying to avoid the financial and political fate of Republican Blake Masters.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., badly outraised Masters in the 2022 Senate race, and groups aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., notably didn’t invest in the Arizona race.

Lake ruminated on the subject of money during an event in Sun City West , suggesting that Gallego had once again outraised her.

She said Democrats and Gallego “take in a ton of money from God knows where and God knows who, and he’s going to run ads making himself look like he’s just a middle-of-the-road kind of guy. And it couldn’t be further from the truth.”

Lake’s Florida fundraiser featured Roseanne Barr, the former sitcom star whose career imploded after social media posts denying a Florida school massacre and joking that a multiracial former Obama administration official was the child of terrorists and “Planet of the Apes.”

London’s Daily Mail reported that Barr’s jokes included material on male-dominated Washington and women’s menstrual cycle.

“Kari, it’s time for a woman in the Senate,” the Daily Mail said. It was unclear whether Barr acknowledged that the person Lake hopes to follow in the Senate is a woman. “It’s time for a woman everywhere. You know why?

“Because anything a man can do, a woman can get another man to do even better.”

In another joke, Barr, who ran for president in 2012, said if she were commander in chief, she would create an all-woman army.

“That’s what I do. Think about it. We might win some of these damn wars for a change, you know what I mean?

“Everybody’s on their period at the exact same time. Chugging back those Red Bulls drinks ... ‘I’m looking for a man to blame all my problems on.’ Can you imagine that? ... Just be so great. Especially (if) we’re fighting against women who are thinner than us.”

The other comedians included former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Jim Bruer, who drew attention for canceling shows in 2021 at venues that required COVID-19 vaccines, and Chad Prather,  who challenged Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022 because of an executive order requiring face masks in some public places in the early months of the pandemic.
