Kaneohe Sandbar

  • There are no restrooms located at the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar, but there are restrooms located at the Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor and the Heeia Kea State Park. It is recommended that you wear your swimsuit to your check-in so you do not have to worry about changing when you arrive.
  • Don't forget sunscreen since there is no shade at the sandbar. Wearing a rashguard or long sleeve swimwear is recommended for guests, especially children, with sensitive skin. Hats and umbrellas are also recommended.
  • To protect the coral reefs and to ensure a healthy marine eco-system, be sure to use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Please leave all the natural life undisturbed, and do not take any sand or coral with you. You are also required by state law to stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) from all Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu).
  • While you are welcome to bring any snacks or drinks to enjoy while out on the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar, be sure to pack up any trash and leave nothing behind.
  • The Kaneohe sandbar is about 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide.
  • In ancient Hawaii, the sandbar was known as “Ahu O Laka”, meaning Altar of Laka, the God of Hula.
  • The movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" was filmed at the Heeia Kea Harbor in Kaneohe Bay.

What is a sandbar?

A sandbar, like the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar, is a landform found in water that is made entirely of sand, pebbles or silt. They often create tiny islands or land bridges, and act as a natural barrier against the tide.

How long is the Kaneohe Sandbar tour?

Tour duration will vary depending on the tour book, but range from three to four hours.

How do you get to the Kaneohe Sandbar?

You can easily reach the sandbar by boat or kayak. A boat ride will take about 10 to 15 minutes, and depending on the ocean conditions, kayaking can take anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes.

Can you swim out to the Kaneohe Sandbar?

Due to the distance from shore, it is not possible for the average person to swim to the sandbar.

Are there sharks at the Kaneohe Sandbar?

Yes, but not to worry! Even though Kaneohe Bay is said to have hammerhead sharks, there have only been a few sightings, and no attacks have ever been reported. Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is one of the safest areas in the water around Oahu.

Is the Kaneohe Sandbar worth visiting?

Yes, most definitely! It is one of the most beautiful places in Hawaii with incredible views of the Koolau Mountains seen in the movie Jurassic Park. The sandbar is also very family-friendly and the shallow waters at the sandbar make it a must-do for any visit to Oahu.

What can you do at the Kaneohe Sandbar?

Whether you come at low tide or high tide, there are plenty of fun things to do at the sandbar. Not only can you simply swim and relax in the water, but you can also set up a net for a game of volleyball, kayak or stand-up paddle along the calm surface, and even go snorkeling at the nearby reefs.

Can you fly drones at the Kaneohe Sandbar?

Due to its close proximity to the Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base, it is not advised to use drones as they are not allowed within a certain distance to the base.

What is the best time to go to the Kaneohe Sandbar?

The tide is lower in the early morning, and the weather and ocean conditions are normally calmer as well.

Latest reviews of Kaneohe Sandbar

Great excursion highly recommend.

My hubby and I took our 9 and 5 year old on this Sandbar trip. It was a short boat ride out & the kids never got motion sickness. Tour guide was very thoughtful and had a bunch of water toys for everyone, we had cano ... more es, SUP, volley ball and various water sports stuff to go around. It took 3-3.5 hours which is just perfect and right when we got tired it was time to head back. The band playing music was very good and this is a nod to the singer as he was clearly a talent and easy on the eyes This trip was great!! Just enough tabs priced reasonably oh and bring your own snacks & booze!! That was cool they let us pack our own munchies!

Excellent adventure with family!! Love the vibe and staff. Mahalo!!!

Overall, the experience was awesome! Tyson and the whole crew are wonderful, extremely kind, and helpful. The boat was clean, and I felt safe. The team went above and beyond to make the sandbar and snorkeling a blast!

What a great last day of our vacation.

The music from Kalani was great on the way out to the sandbar. He was so nice, making sure he was delivering the best Ohana. The sandbar was amazing, if it hadn’t been so windy it would have been the perfect day. My son ... more didn’t hesitate to get out on the kayak and SUP. The fish were breathtaking in the reef. We will definitely be back. The staff were so amazing and so ready to help out with anything. We loved it as a family. Sincerely, The Murray Family Reno, NV

The morning is the best time to go because of the calm waters and good weather. So make sure that you think of all these things before you book a tour for a truly memorable time.

How Do You Get to the Kaneohe Sandbar?

The Kaneohe Sandbar is located off the coast of Kaneohe Bay in Oahu. The easiest way to get to the sandbar is by boat. You can either take a charter boat, rent your own boat, or book a tour. If you are taking a charter boat, be sure to book your tour in advance.

What Should You Bring to the Kaneohe Sandbar?

“Would recommend the this private Oahu tour option. I’ve learned that I don’t like touring with strangers on a public tour. I prefer an intimate private tour. Our driver/guide was great! Nothing but praises all around.”

sandbar oahu tours

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Kaneohe bay sand bar, secluded sandbar .

The Ahu O Laka - Kaneohe Bay Sand Bar, is one of the exposed features (islets) in Kaneohe Bay amongst others such as the Mokoli’i (Chinaman’s Hat) and Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island),  It is the only one of its kind in the state.

The sandbar submerges into hip-deep water during high tide, and emerges as a nice sandy beach during low tide.   This Sandbar is a gathering place for local recreational boaters to BBQ, snorkel and just relax in the clear cool waters of the Pacific Ocean.   Captain Bob’s Picnic Sail has an  exclusive location of the sandbar by carrying the only commercial permit to this area so our guests can have an uncrowded area to themselves.   Our first stop is the sandbar where you can play a game of water volleyball, have a relaxing swim, take a walk on this natural wonder, or simply relax on board taking in the beautiful views and the Hawaiian sun while enjoying a BBQ lunch.

This is a must see for locals and visitors.  The calm surrounding clear water, protected by the Kaneohe Bay barrier reef, teeming with beautiful sea life, unobstructed view to the majestic Ko’olau Mountain are something that you should not miss!

Kaneohe Sandbar: Best Tours, Snorkeling, Kayaking & Photos – 2024

Kaneohe Sandbar snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Oahu – you don’t want to miss it!

Oahu is home to many amazing attractions, such as the world-famous Waikiki Beach, the historic Pearl Harbor, and the iconic Diamond Head crater.

But there’s one place that stands out from the rest: Kaneohe Bay .

Kaneohe Sandbar snorkeling from beautiful Kaneohe Bay

Kaneohe Bay is a large, sheltered bay on the windward side of Oahu , facing the Koolau Mountains. The bay is one of the most beautiful and scenic places on the island, with calm, turquoise waters, green mangroves, and stunning views.

But what makes Kaneohe Bay truly special is the Kaneohe Sandbar , the largest saltwater sandbar in the world!

Kaneohe Sandbar is a natural formation that can be found at the center of Kaneohe Bay. Depending on the tide, it can be covered with waist-high water or completely exposed, creating a small beach in the middle of the ocean.

The Kaneohe Sandbar is stunning but it’s almost a mile away from shore, so you will need a boat or kayak to get there. But trust me, it’s worth the trip.

The sandbar and its surrounding coral reefs are perfect for snorkeling, playing beach volleyball, having a lunch picnic, and enjoying views of the mountains. You can also see dolphins, turtles, rays, and other marine life in the bay.

Kaneohe Sandbar is like a paradise on earth!

What is the Kaneohe Sandbar?

Kaneohe Sandbar is a natural formation that can be found at the center of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii’s largest sheltered body of water.

It’s not an island, but it’s not just a patch of sand either. It’s something in between.

And getting to it can be tricky. Want to visit hassle-free? Book this popular boat tour!

Kaneohe Bay is on the east side of Oahu , facing the Koolau Mountains. Though it’s on the windward side of Oahu, Kaneohe Bay is protected by a reef that keeps the water calm and clear.

Kaneohe Bay on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, USA

The sandbar is a ridge of sand that rises from the bottom of the bay, about a mile away from the shore. You need a boat or a kayak to get there.

The sandbar changes with the tides: it can be covered with waist-high water or completely exposed, creating a small beach in the middle of the ocean.

Kaneohe Sandbar is also known as Ahu O Laka , which means “ altar of Laka ” in Hawaiian. Laka was a voyaging chief who was honored by the ancient Hawaiians.

How to get to Kaneohe Sandbar?

Since Kaneohe Sandbar is about a mile offshore, you have to take a boat or kayak.

Kaneohe Sandbar Boat Tour

The easiest way to get to the sandbar is by joining a Kaneohe Bay sandbar boat tour , a roughly 15 min boat ride.

A boat tour will take you from He’eia Kea Boat Harbor in Kaneohe to the sandbar and back, with stops at the best spots for snorkeling and other activities.

I recommend boat tours because they are convenient and enjoyable. You can see and do a lot in a short time, without any hassle or stress.

Tour boats at Kaneohe Sandbar

You can also experience the sandbar in style and comfort. Some boat tours even include lunch, drinks, and water sports like banana boats and bumper tubes.

You can also listen to live music by local Hawaiian musicians who will set the mood for your adventure.

Kaneohe Sandbar Kayak Tour

Kayaking to Kaneohe sandbar is another great option!

You can kayak from He’eia State Park in Kaneohe to the sandbar and back, with stops at the best spots for snorkeling and exploring.

Rent a two-person kayak for Kaneohe Bay now : no need to transport it, it will be set up and ready for you by the water!

Self-Guided Kaneohe Sandbar Tour

If you’re feeling adventurous and independent, you can also get to the sandbar by yourself. You will need to rent or bring your own boat or kayak, as well as your own snorkel gear and other equipment.

You will also need to check the tide chart and weather forecast before you go.

A self-guided tour will give you more freedom and flexibility to explore the sandbar at your own leisure. You can also avoid the crowds and have more privacy.

A self-guided tour requires more planning and preparation. You will need to know how to navigate the bay safely and responsibly.

I suggest self-guided tours only if you’re confident and experienced in boating or kayaking. You should also be aware of the risks and challenges involved in getting to the sandbar by yourself.

There were yellow tangs, butterflyfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, and even a moray eel. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Snorkeling with beautiful Hawaiian tropical fish

You can often see Hawaiian green sea turtles near the Turtle Reef at the edge of the sandbar.

The Best Time to Visit Kaneohe Sandbar

The Kaneohe Sandbar is a wonderful place to visit all year round, but the activities you want to enjoy will dictate when to visit.

The sandbar is only visible when the tide is low. At high tide, the sandbar is completely submerged underwater.

The best time to see the Kaneohe Sandbar is during a low tide. You can easily find the tide chart on Google or on websites like https://www.tide-forecast.com/ .

During low tide, you can see many of the sandbars

The low tide starts around 6 AM and will stay low for several hours.

Visiting the sandbar during low tide is great for snorkeling, playing beach volleyball, having a picnic, and enjoying views of the Koolau Mountains and the turquoise water.

You can walk on the soft white sand and see colorful fish, coral, and turtles in the clear water.

Visiting the sandbar during high tide can be fun too, as it is a great snorkeling spot to see Hawaii’s sea life. You can also enjoy ocean sports like banana boat, bumper tube, jet ski, or SeaWalker.

Jet skiing near Kaneohe Sandbar

The best time of year to visit the sandbar is during spring or summer, when the weather is more stable and dry. The best time of day to visit the sandbar is in the morning or afternoon, when the sun is not too strong and the wind is not too strong.

I personally love visiting the sandbar in the morning, when it is less crowded and more peaceful.

Snorkeling and Water Activities Gear Checklist

Though you can rent snorkeling gear or use the ones that come with tours, we invested in our own gear, mainly due to Covid-19 (why take the risk?).

  • Snorkeling Gear Set : We love our Cressi Light Weight Premium Travel Snorkel Set for All Family , compact and easy to pack, great fitting, and very clear underwater. The Zenoplige Mask Fins Snorkel Set is a great budget option.
  • Sunscreen : Hawaii’s sun can be harsh. Avoid sunburn with sunscreen compliant with Hawaii’s 104 Reef Act. The Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray , moisturizing with Vitamin E, is our go-to when we travel to Hawaii. Apply liberally and regularly!
  • Underwater Camera : Want to capture Hawaii’s incredible underwater seascape and marine life? Your best budget option is the Fujifilm QuickSnap Waterproof Disposable Camera , reasonably cheap with good underwater photos! If you want high-end photos and video, you must invest in the premium GoPro HERO12 – Waterproof Action Camera , (waterproof to 33 feet)!
  • Inflatable Life Jackets : If you’re planning paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports, and prefer your own life jacket, consider one of these two US Coast Guard approved options: the Onyx M-16 Series Belt Back Manual Inflatable Life Jacket or the Onyx A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket .
  • Water Shoes : Some of Hawaii’s beaches have sharp lava rocks or coral reefs, good water shoes will protect your feet (but please do not walk on the reef!). We use the Merrell Hydro Moc rubber shoes ( men’s , women’s ), great for slippery rocks. If you prefer sandals, we recommend the Keen Newport H2 Closed Toe Water Sandals ( men’s , women’s ).
  • Waterproof Waist Pack : Keep your rental car keys, cards, and phone dry and safe while you swim or snorkel with a dry bag. We love this 2-pack AiRun Tech Pouch with waist strap . The transparent one is touch-screen friendly!

Ocean Safety Tips

Hawaii’s beaches are beautiful, but ocean activities can be dangerous. Ocean conditions are dynamic and can change without warning.

Here are some tips to enjoy the ocean and beaches safely:

  • ALWAYS heed posted warning signs.
  • Check conditions just before you arrive at your chosen beach, and watch conditions at the beach for a bit before you decide to enter the water.
  • Swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask the lifeguard for advice before you enter the water.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, whether you are standing at the shore or on a cliff above. If you see wet rocks or sand, it means the water has been here recently.
  • Know your limitations, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer. If in doubt, do not go out.
  • If you choose to enter the water, go with a partner or in a group.
  • Know that alcohol can impair judgment and motor skills in the water.
  • Keep children close and always keep your eyes on what they are doing in the water.
  • Watch for sharp coral or rocks or sea urchins.

Oh really? Interesting. In that case would you still recommend snorkeling tour even without a boat? Or do most people just go on their own from the shore? I guess you still have to know locations and best timings, right?

I don't advise him going in by himself from shore if it's his second time ever. I assume he can swim.

The water is going to be cooler than Key West, btw.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Oahu tours. Maui or the Big Island would be much better bets, if you're going to either.

Hanauma Bay is all beat up in the "easy spots." There is decent coral but out further and I remember a current on the left hand side where we went to see good things. I would advise caution. Be sure he has a snorkel vest and maybe he can find a buddy or small group to swim with during the mandatory coral preservation instruction part..

Snorkeling from a boat is not ideal. We did it once and only once. The crew sit on surfboards in the water to monitor and ensure your safety. But they tend to “herd” the snorkelers into a rather small tight group. I had my mask kicked off my face several times. If you try to move away from the group (with a partner always) they come after you and and send you back.

I’d give it a solid pass

Well that certainly depends on the tour. I've done half a dozen at least and never experienced anything like that.

Thanks everyone. I guess it has to be Hanauma Bay then or one of the suggested tours.

Well it was our experience.

I have only been on boats on the Big island for snorkeling…only had great experiences! :)
