What does meet on location entail?

Meet on location means travelling to the location of the tour yourself and then meeting our tour guides rather than being picked up and taken to the location.

How is it best to be ready for a pick-up for a tour with Arctic Adventures?

This is a great question. We ask all participants to be ready from the start of the pickup time indicated. This is because you may well be the first pick up of the day. Please be at your assigned location at the start time that you chose when booking the tour.

Here you should wait for your guide.

Have your email and phone number listed with us so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.

View our pick-up locations in Reykjavík.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

Before and during activities on the multi-day tours consumption of alcohol is prohibited. If we suspect that a participant is intoxicated, we will prohibit them from joining the activity.

After the activities of the day are finished, you are welcome to have a drink and relax.

Do you offer any family friendly tours, for younger children?

Yes, we do. Langjökull Ice Cave is a magical experience, the tour has no minimum age and is a wonderful option for the whole family. Whale Watching with our partner company Elding has been a favourite with families traveling with young children, these guys have a great success rate in seeing whales (upwards of 98% in the summertime).

Another option would be the Landmannalaugar Safari on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our super jeep tours  are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon tour .

Can the itinerary for the tour change?

Your safety is our number one priority! Keeping this in mind, Arctic Adventures reserves the right to adjust the itinerary and/or take different routes depending on conditions. Please read more information in our cancellation policy .

Is there a guide on each Arctic Adventures tour?

Yes, there is a specially trained and certified guide on each of our tours. The only exception to this is for our self-drive tours .

All of our tours are guided in English.

Can the guide advise if I am eligible for rescheduling the tour and/or a refund?

No, for all your questions and concerns you would need to contact our customer service.

What type of power outlets are used in Iceland? Do I need to bring an adapter?

The standard in Iceland is 230V and 50Hz and we use F-type power sockets and plugs, so you might have to bring an adaptor if you are visiting from UK, USA, Canada or other countries using a different voltage, Hz or plugs.

How are the tours rated in terms of difficulty?

Our tours are split into four different categories that help participants to understand what to expect from the tour. The categories are Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Demanding. Each tour is rated making it easier to find tours that suit you.

For further information about the difficulty ratings and descriptions.

How does carbon offsetting work?

We’ve partnered with the Kolviður Fund in a new carbon offsetting program, which passengers can select to participate in at the time of booking.

The Kolviður Fund is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Kolviður forests are strategically planted to absorb the maximum amount of CO2 and the forests are protected for a minimum of 60 years. During their lifetime the trees absorb carbon and store it in their root system, trunk, and branches. Trees also prevent soil erosion and maintain storage of carbon in the soil.

About Vatnajökull Glacier

highest mountain peak of Iceland

Not for nothing did Vatnajökull feature in the James Bond film A View to Kill and the fantasy TV series Game of Thrones . Its unparalleled eerie beauty, wind-buffeted peaks, and giant sea of glinting white snow make the landscape look like another planet.

Situated in Southeast Iceland, Vatnajökull stretches 8,100 km² (3,127 mi²) and covers more than 9% of Iceland’s land, making it the largest glacier in Iceland and Europe. The average thickness of the ice reaches up to a whopping 400 m (1,312 ft)!

Today, this mammoth ice cap is a part of the Vatnajökull National Park, which was established in 2008 to safeguard Iceland's precious nature. Vatnajökull feeds into countless rivers and glacier tongues. It’s responsible for a large portion of Iceland’s attractions, including the celebrated Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. During the tour, your local guide will tell you fascinating natural and historical stories about the majestic glacier.

Vatnajökull is also home to Iceland’s highest summit, Hvannadalshnjúkur. You’ll have a chance to feast your eyes on this beautiful, pyramid-like structure. Beneath Vatnajökull sits some of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. While you probably won’t see any volcanic eruptions, the vast, wintry expanse of the glacier will send shivers down your spine!

Difficulty Ratings

Easy, moderate, challenging … What does this really mean? Below you can read the definitions we use for our ratings. We hope this will help you get an idea of the trip difficulty to make sure you choose a trip that suits you best.

Easy Suitable for most people in fair condition. You have to be able to walk on uneven surfaces and hike for at least 2 – 3 hours at a slow pace, with breaks. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Moderate Suitable for those in good condition who are able to walk for about 4 hours at a low or moderate pace. Trails are generally of good quality and glaciers travel at a relatively low angle.

Challenging For someone in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking. Trails are generally in fair conditions but some parts of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel can be on uneven ground with challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 12 km a day on rugged trails and snow.

Demanding Only a few of our trips are defined as Demanding. Hence most of our tours are rated Easy, moderate, or challenging.

Demanding tours are for someone in very good hiking and physical condition. Trails are generally in fair conditions but large sections of the tour might be off track. Glacier/snow travel on uneven ground with some challenging sections. Increased distance. We recommend guests have the ability to cover 20 km a day on uneven trails and snow. A significant increase in elevation and some technical difficulty should be expected.

Equipment list

Try to pack as lightly as possible and take only essentials. Excess baggage can be a burden to you and to our support crew. Keep in mind that there are limits on how much your duffel bag can weigh because the weight restrictions on international and domestic flights are usually around 20 kg.

Luggage for Multiday tours and longer journeys with assistance vehicle An extra bag clearly marked with your name can be kept at your Reykjavik accommodation. Large duffel bag (60/80 liters) sturdy and water-resistant, not exceeding 15 kg Daypack (30 to 50 liters)

Clothing You will need to bring comfortable and adequate clothing to protect you from the cold and wet weather. Wool, synthetics, and wool/synthetic blends are good. We discourage the use of cotton, as this does not insulate against cold or wet conditions. When camping, tents are provided. You will be responsible for bringing your mattress and sleeping bag.

When layering, the innermost layer should be long underwear. The middle layer can be a synthetic turtleneck or wool shirt, and pants. The outermost layer should be a synthetic jacket, and/or a good quality Gore-Tex wind/rain parka and over-pants.

For quantities for each item listed, use your own judgment, based on the expected weather conditions and overall packing/weight restrictions for your luggage.

  • Regular underwear. Synthetics are easier to wash and dry
  • Synthetic or wool thermal underwear
  • Long-sleeved, synthetic, or wool shirt
  • Short-sleeved synthetic or cotton/synthetic T-shirts
  • Medium-weight synthetic fleece sweater or jacket
  • Full-length pants, quick-drying synthetic fabric

  • Hiking shorts, quick-drying synthetic fabric

Fantastic experience

"We had an amazing experience on this tour. Our driver (Elias) was knowledgeable and had the perfect balance of sharing information but also giving us time to reflect and enjoy the breathtaking landscape of Iceland. Highly recommend this company, tour, and driver!"

Glacier hike with Alberto Marini

"We had a private guided glacier walk for 3 active senior friends with Alberto Marini who is an Italian-born mountain/rock climber. Though cautious by nature, I felt completely comfortable with Alberto who apparently trained many of the other guides we encountered. He was knowledgeable about glaciers and the natural history of Iceland-verified by my geologist husband. Definitely worth doing especially if with Alberto."

Snowmobiling gone wild on a glacier

"We had a private tour with 2 couples to do snowmobiling on a glacier. Magnus was a very skilled ATV driver taking us on an adventurous 1hour drive to get to the glacier to meet snowmobiles. We enjoyed the vantage point even on a cloudy windy day to ride around to see the surrounding volcanoes. Quite a fun 3 hour tour."

Private Tour to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach

" We took a private tour from Hotel Ranga out to Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. We rented a car but decided it was too far to drive on our own there and back in one day so we booked a tour with Southcoast.

Our driver, Stefan, was fantastic! It was a 10-hour journey (including a stop for lunch) so it was nice to have a guide that was a great conversationalist and very knowledgeable about Iceland. He answered all of our questions about Iceland and stopped at a few places we never would have found on our own.

We had a gorgeous day and the pictures we got on Diamond Beach were out of this world. Would highly recommend this company and this guide, especially if you're interested in a private tour. "

We were lucky to be the only ones booked in for this tour. Our guide, Mike, was really nice, very knowledgeable. We could not have imagined a better experience in these caves. Mike, and Glacier Journey, made it truly unforgettable, and a true highlight of our Iceland road trip! 10/10 would recommend to anyone. Read more Written January 26, 2024

We wad the option to take a refund or to take the Black Sand beach Super Jeep tour. We took this tour, we were the only three in the Super Jeep, as nobody else from the cancelled tour answered their email, and we had a fantastic 3-hour tour to places that we were completely alone to enjoy the black sand beach and a secret glacier lagoon! The driver Laufey and Misha (hope I pronounce it correct..) drove to unbelievably beautiful places, we had our time for photos, se saw seals, bones from sperm whales, everything so nice! Thank you so much for the beautiful moments! Read more Written January 7, 2024

  • snelson1112 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience, but way too many people in our group We were a party of 6 who have never been on a snowmobile and this was a total blast. You first suit up, which would be great on a cold day, but it was quite warm on the day we went. There were a lot of people in the little trailer (probably a little too many). We all piled in a couple of big SUVs and drove up the mountain. The drive was beautiful itself, but don't look down because sometimes you are on the side of a cliff. We got to the top of the mountain where the snowmobiles were lined up. The snow was mushy - probably because of the warm day. We got instructions on what to do and off we go. There were probably somewhere between 25-30 people in this group and we were positioned at the back of the long line. You are told to stay in the tracks of those in front of you, which is very hard to do with so many people. We were constantly stopping and starting because the people in front of us were going too slow. At one point, we stopped and the leader asked if everyone was fine with the speed and if someone wants to go slower, then go to the back of the line. Of course, no one did and we were stuck the entire time in the back and we wanted to go faster. We stopped a few times during the trip. At that time, the guides should move those who were at the front to the back to give everyone a chance to lead. We did stop at the top of the glacier, walked around and played in the snow. We had beautiful weather that day and the sight was amazing. It is like you are on a different planet. We loved the power the machines had and thoroughly enjoyed our tour. I think there were way too many people in the group. It would have been so much better with fewer folks, or at least switch up the order so everyone can get a better experience. Of all the activities we did in Iceland, this was rated number one by several of my group members. Read more Written November 28, 2023

  • Venture07174274947 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Great landscapes, but overall experience with some room for improvement I did the snowmobile tour on the Vatnajökull glacier, riding a solo snowmobile together with a group of other 5 people. The experience as a whole is nice and easy. The glacier is gorgeous, incredibly large with so many amazing crevasses and breathtaking dramatic views on the Icelandic landscape. 5 stars. The F-road to get there on the SuperJeep is worth the trip by itself. 4 stars. The snowmobile tour, however, is not so long (1 hour), has no great uphills or descents and is done at a limited speed, always in a row, due to safety reasons. Having had previous funnier experience riding snowmobiles (for instance, at Svalbard islands), I've found this one not so satisfying. 3 stars. Our guide was very nice and kind, but was not able to answer some questions I asked about the geology of the glacier and - in general - he didn't talk or explaind so much to the group. I would have appreciated more dialogue and storytelling, especially during the pretty long SuperJeep drive. 2 stars. Read more Written October 20, 2023

Adventure of a lifetime We ended up booking the snowmobile adventure the day we were leaving for Iceland and we are so happy we did as this was the best part of our vacation. Sven is amazing, extremely knowledgeable and made the entire experience so memorable. • RobM97 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience BUT... The glacier trip we went on was amazing BUT beware of having an accident... My 20 year old son had a fairly slow crash and luckily jumped off before the snowmobile ended up in a crevasse. Thankfully he was OK but there was damage to the snowmobile which we were liable for. And things in Iceland are not cheap...... The repairs ended up costing over 10% of our whole trip! Although you do sign up to take responsibility for crashing I think the guides should clearly say this before you set off. Having said all this we were blessed with incredible weather and the experience of snowmobiling across the glacier was absolutely amazing - a reaaly one off experience.. • H1988DIjohnf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The CANT MISS Iceland experience Snowmobiling the Vatnajokull Glacier is a one of a kind experience. There’s a reason it’s a filmmaker’s dream. You get the thrill of a super jeep mountain tour (ride to/from the glacier), hiking on a glacier, and you cover several kilometers cruising on a snowmobile. Turnaround point occurs at one of the highest elevations in all of Iceland, with views of the volcanoes! I proposed to my fiancé and the team at Glacier Journey went above and beyond to curate this unforgettable experience. I work in the live experiences business and you cannot beat this one! Hofn is the closest city to the pickup point and also a well kept secret…great hospitality and drier weather (at least for the days we were there). Read more Written September 7, 2023

Snowmobile Tour on Vatnajokull - The Largest Glacier in Europe

Taking the tour in a small group makes for a more memorable experience

Description

Discover the magnificent backcountry scenery of Vatnajökull glacier on an exciting guided snowmobile tour in Iceland!

This adrenaline-packed adventure upon Europe’s largest glacier offers breathtaking, scenic views as you traverse snowmobile trails across icy landscapes and powdery snow fields. There is no need to be intimidated, as snowmobiles are safe and fun for people of all ages. No previous experience in snow sports is required to join this tour. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced rider, all you need to operate a snowmobile is a valid driver’s license and a keen sense of adventure! Don’t worry if you haven’t got a driver’s license, as you may still join the tour as a passenger.

You’ll meet your experienced snowmobile guide at a location nearby. Be sure to check your voucher closely, as the meeting point may change by the season. From there, you’ll be provided with overalls, boots, a balaclava and a helmet before boarding a specially-modified super jeep, built to withstand the tough and rugged Icelandic terrain. As you make the ascent towards Vatnajökull glacier, your guide will explain the fascinating history of the region, including information about glaciers and how they have been impacted by the climate, as well as humans over time.

Once you arrive at Vatnajökull glacier, your guide will go over a number of instructions with you to ensure a safe and enjoyable time will be had by all. They’ll equip you with all of the necessary safety gear that is required for the trip and make sure that you are comfortable on your snowmobiling equipment before heading out.

Vatnajökull National Park contains some of the most scenic snowmobile terrain in all of Iceland. You’ll be taken onto one of the most remote parts of the ice-cap, where you will have spectacular views of Hvannadalshnúkur, the country’s highest peak, set amidst gorgeous mountains, valleys and active volcanoes below. As you glide over the snow, you’ll feel the cool Arctic breeze against your skin, reinvigorating you from within. It’s easy once you get started and you’ll become more confident as the pristine, snowy landscapes pass by.

During the snowmobile tour, there will be an opportunity to stop and explore the glaciated surroundings, taking in the deep crevasses and spectacular ice formations all around. It’s an incredible feeling to set foot upon thousand-year-old solid ice, particularly with the knowledge that there are many active volcanoes that lie silently beneath this ice cap!

Get away from the crowds on an adventure of-a-lifetime with this snowmobile tour on Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe! This is the perfect experience to share with friends and family. Check availability by choosing a date.

What to bring

Good to know.

The weather in Iceland changes quickly, so don't be caught unawares. It is always better to bring a sweater or dress in layers which you may take off if you are too warm. Jeans are not recommended for this tour because denim absorbs moisture quickly once wet and takes a long time to dry, leaving the wearer very cold.

Please note: A valid driver‘s license is needed to operate a snowmobile. Passengers do not need driver´s license.

Joining this subarctic adventure and driving a snowmobile over Europe’s biggest glacier, will be one of the most exciting experiences you will ever participate in.

Along with an exciting adventure, you will also experience an unbelievable view over the glacier. If you’re lucky and the view is good, you will see the east and south highlands of Iceland.

About halfway through the tour, we’ll stop and you can take pictures and peacefully enjoy the scenery. Our guides are informative and entertaining and will tell you facts about the area and the glacier. A valid driver’s license is required to operate the snowmobile. Participants combined weight on one snowmobile MUST be 180kg / 390lbs or less. If your combined weight exceeds 180kg / 390lbs you need to book single snowmobiles. The standard version of our snowmobile tour has two persons riding on one snowmobile. However, if you are travelling solo or in an odd number group 1, 3, 5, etc., you need to book at least one solo rider.

My wife & I were on our honeymoon for this trip & we are so glad we chose to do the Golden Circle tour with the snowmobiling & Ice Cave adventure! Our tour guide was wonderful - very knowledgeable about Icelandic culture & Norse mythology and thorough in his explanations & descriptions as we made our way to each destination. We got to see where the American & Eurasian tectonic plates meet then got to see the Geysir, which was so interesting to see - all kinds of steam & bubbling water coming up from the ground! Then we hopped ion a "SUPER" bus that took us to the snowmobiles where we quickly got a tutorial on how to ride. Then we were off to find the ice cave on our snowmobile! We got to spend some time in the ice cave which was just surreal! So crazy to not only snowmobile onto the glacier, but to then descend into the glacier in an ice cave! Once we snowmobiled back to the camp, the super bus took us back to Gulfoss, where we got to see the amazing waterfalls. Such an amazing day full of wonderful sights and an unforgettable snowmobiling/ice cave experience. HIGHLY recommend to anyone that will be visiting Reykjavik!

It was really great. Had a quality experience with it. Easy reservation, and they always responded quickly with good service. I'm willing to have a travel with it again if I have chance to come back to Iceland!

Snowmobiling in Iceland

Snowmobiles are All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) operating on rubber tracks and steered with incorporated skis. In Iceland, they are ever popular for transportation but also for recreational purposes. If you have ever driven a quad bike, then you may already be familiar with the basic drive of a snowmobile, although you can look forward to a far smoother and serene experience.

11% of Iceland is covered in ice, and the country boasts Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. The journey to this coveted destination is breathtaking by itself for its prodigious mountains and deep valleys. Speeding across this natural wonder on a Vatnajökull snowmobile tour is really the only way you get to genuinely experience the enormity and endless nature of this graceful giant.

The West is home to Europe's second largest glacier, Langjökull. Just north of the Golden Circle, Langjökull is the most popular glacial and snowmobiling destination. Gullfoss itself it fed primarily by meltwater from this gigantic ice-cap and there is no better way to get to know Langjökull than by snowmobile. Its proximity to Reykjavík really leaves no reason not to visit Europe’s second largest glacier and snowmobiling excursions can be done in combination with a tour of the golden circle .

Glaciers are dangerous terrain especially since cracks in the ice can form crevasses which are not always visible, so it is necessary to have a guide show you the right way through the ice. Luckily enough, plenty of guided snowmobile tours take intrepid thrill-seekers zooming safely across the ice and snow.

Snowmobiles do not require trails or roads and often, hitching a ride on the back of a snowmobile is the only way to access the infinitely snowy wonderlands waiting to be discovered.

The snowmobiles that you will be driving here in Iceland can reach speeds of 70km/h (44mph), guaranteeing a good flow of adrenaline complementing the breathtaking landscapes. The open-air experience of being in the driver's seat—feeling and hearing the wind rush past you as you dash through the landscapes—offers an unforgettable feeling of involvement with the stunning surroundings.

Iceland’s captivating glacial landscapes give you the opportunity to snowmobile all year round, even in the summer. The midnight sun offers you precious time flexibility as well as the stunning glow of warm sunbeams against the contrasting frozen plains.

Snowmobile tours are not just limited to exploring Iceland’s many beautiful glaciers. You can also book tours of well-known attractions in the winter, and whizz through the snow and ice in captivating areas such as on the frozen lake Mývatn.

The weather in Iceland is a keen topic for locals and an informing factor as to whether or not a tour is possible; so be prepared to be flexible. It is also necessary to mention that the Icelandic driving laws apply no differently to snowmobiles so there is a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol consumption.

Seeing your favourite attractions on snowmobile really offers an experiential involvement with the stunning landscapes Iceland has to offer all year round. Not only can you reach destinations otherwise inaccessible but you can do so whilst embracing the extreme and exhilarating sport of snowmobiling.
