FAQ about our Vietnam tours

Because Vietnam is a long expanse of country, the best time to travel depends very much on the region. North Vietnam has the driest periods from December to April, but it can also be quite cold during the winter months. In South Vietnam it is hot all year round, only it has a similar period without rain as the north. In central Vietnam, the dry season does not start until around the end of March and April and continues until about June.

Yes, regardless of which country you come from, you need a visa in Vietnam to enter. Fortunately for most nationalities can arrange this online.

To be sure of availability, we recommend booking a few days in advance for day tours. For complete Vietnam round tours it is useful to book at least 2 to 3 months in advance. When you travel during the absolute high season, it is even good to book further in advance.

Local Vietnam has two options; by credit card and by bank transfer.

• Credit Card : Our bank charges a fee of 4.3% for credit cards. 
• Bank transfer:  Bank transfers go to a European (IBAN), UK- or US account without any additional fees.

A trip to be remembered for a long time for sure. From excellent communications during the planning, great itinerary, some fantastic and sometimes challenging roads, good accomadation, a really good tour guide, Mr Cao, spoke good English. All up, I can't speak highly enough of the whole trip. Thank you, Mr Dong.

Short Northern Vietnam packages 6Days/5nights

This was a very well organised tour which covered Sapa trekking (overnight train was quite comfortable) and overnight in Ha Long Bay on the boat. I was upgraded to a single room on the boat (having booked twin share) at no extra charge since there were enough rooms on board, which was great. Accommodation was comfortable and in a good location (Hanoi A1 Hotel in Old Quarter), and Sapa was Holiday Sapa Hotel, where pick up/drop off was. The itinerary was organised well, with Cathy (main contact organiser of the tour) having done a wonderful job ensuring everything on the trip went smoothly. She was easily contactable via whatsapp and email, and ensured the drivers knew when and where for pick up. There was a bit of confusion with breakfast at one of the hotels with the reception staff unaware that the meal was covered by the tour already, however Cathy prompty contacted the hotel and ensured I got refund back. It was very helpful to have Cathy as the main contact person, so overall very satisfied and happy with this tour for the Northern Vietnam experience!

Private Vietnam Tour Reviews

We actually did this tour backwards, south to north and customised it a little. Initially we had some doubts about using a local agent, we shouldn't have been worried. From the moment we enquired via Tourradar their agent Long Pham opened a WhatsApp dialogue with me. He is knowledgeable, professional, accomodating and attentive. He was in contact at every step from initial enquiry to making sure we'd checked in for our return flight. The hotels booked were comfortable, clean and well located, each airport meet and return from hotel were private transfers, no multi drop bus rides, all tours booked (except Halong Bay) were private, just two of us, guide and driver, all tour guides used were personable, knowledgeable and flexible to our needs, don't think some of the bigger Western tour operators would have you spend an afternoon drinking rice whine in the home of a local farmer. Tip, either get yourself an eSim (used Holafly which was faultless), or a local sim, that way you have pretty much 24x7 comms open to your Realistic Asia agent.

Our guide Mai Thieu was fabulous and meant we had a great time and saw parts of Hoi A that we would not have accessed on our own. He was the perfect guide and happy to match the riding to our needs. Couldn’t recommend him and the whole tour more highly. Fantastic way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary!

Day 1: Hanoi

Xin chao! Welcome to Vietnam. You will be met on arrival and transferred from the airport to your centrally located hotel. After time to freshen up, your local guide will meet you at your accommodation, welcoming you to Vietnam over a complimentary refreshment and briefing you on the exciting days ahead. Now’s the time to ask any initial questions or if you need help with recommendations, your guide will be more than happy to assist. Afterwards head out for a welcome meal at KOTO, located a stone’s throw away from one of Hanoi's most popular tourist destinations, the Temple of Literature. KOTO is an excellent establishment and long-time friend of Intrepid which lives by the philosophy of 'know one, teach one'. It supports underprivileged local youth by giving them a chance at making a career in hospitality.

Day 2: Hanoi

Embark on a half-day city tour of town. You will visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Museum, and the tranquil Temple of Literature – an oasis of calm in the heart of town. End the city tour with an introduction to Vietnamese contemporary art and its history at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum. Enjoy your amazing lunch of Hanoi speciality, Bun Cha – charcoal grilled pork pie – among the lively vibes of Hanoi markets. The rest of the day is free to explore where your interest takes you, until an included walking tour around the Old Quarter. You'll see the well-organised chaos and taste many interesting weird and wonderful foods (with a focus on the wonderful). If you are a vegetarian, your guide will definitely try to source for the alternative.

Days 3-4: Hanoi - Overnight boat stay

After breakfast transfer to the spectacular World Heritage-listed site of Halong Bay (approximately 4 hours). The bay is a breath-taking secluded harbour with some 2,000 limestone islands jutting out of the waters of the Bac Bo Gulf. Board your boat and cruise among the dramatic limestone peaks. There's an opportunity to swim in the famous Vietnam East Sea and explore caves filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Spend two peaceful nights on board, beneath a sky alive with stars. Your comfortable sailing junk has twin-share cabins, air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Day 5: Halong Bay - Hanoi

Return to Hanoi (approximately 3.5 hours), with the rest of the day to explore as you wish. You may like to visit the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum once you're back in the city. This Museum plays a crucial role in maintaining and promoting the cultural heritage of Vietnam’s ethnic communities. Your tour guide could assist you in making reservations for the optional AO Show (Vietnamese Bamboo Circuit and folksong music) or instead enjoy a singing session at a traditional club house. Tonight, why not enjoy dinner in one of the many wonderful restaurants in the Old Quarter.

Day 6: Hanoi - Hue

This morning you will take a short flight to Hue, the hub of Vietnam’s historic past and home to its royal treasures. Check into your accommodation located close to the Perfume River, then enjoy some free time to rest or explore. Later, take a guided visit to the war-damaged ruins of the Hue Imperial Citadel complex, which once contained temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace. Follow this up with a short and relaxing cruise on the Perfume River to Thien Mu pagoda, the heart of Buddhism in Hue. Afterwards, the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the local foods that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables, and to just spend some time living the local life. Tonight you will enjoy a home-cooked meal, the perfect chance to learn more of the fascinating flavours of the local Hue residents – with many of the dishes heavily influenced by the royal family.

Day 8: Hue - Hoi An

Day 10: Hoi An

Day 11: Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City

Today take a short morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City (approximately 1.5 hours). Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. After landing, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Later, your guide will meet you and you'll head off on a sightseeing tour around the city like a local – from the seat of a cyclo! You will marvel at colonial architecture at the Notre Dame Cathedral, General Post Office and Reunification Palace. Hear the story of the monk Thich Quang Duc who set himself alight in 1963, in protest of the government's persecution of Buddhists, and then sit among the locals and enjoy Vietnamese coffee or iced tea at a local cafe. Later you'll experience dynamic Saigon by night. Enjoy a sunset cocktail at one of the nicest roof-top bars in the city, before heading to a unique restaurant for dinner with a local beer.

Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City

Today is a free day to explore the city at your own pace. We recommend exploring the city’s restaurants and trying Ho Chi Minh City’s distinctive food. In contrast to the north of Vietnam, the cuisine here is spicier, sweeter and more varied. There are also plenty of street food stalls if you’d like to take a few bites of the local fare. Maybe head to Ben Thanh Market for some delicious flavours, colourful shopping and even more colourful characters.

Over half the island is part of a national park featuring mountains, tropical jungle, hiking trails and more – and the white-sand beaches are simply unbeatable.

Day 15: Phu Quoc – Ho Chi Minh City

After breakfast, take the flight back to Ho Chi Minh City airport, where your Tailor-Made tour of Vietnam comes to an end.

Vietnam remains a cash economy, it is thought that some 90% of all financial transactions are made with cash.   Our currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). There are ATM’s in most major centres, they usually dispense just 2,000,000 or 3,000,000 VND (though sometimes more depending on the bank)  – you are normally free to make several withdrawals each day.  Credit/Debit Cards such as VISA & MASTERCARD are accepted in most major hotels, tailors and up-market shops and restaurants – Diners Card & AMEX can be problematic.  Most smaller shops, homestays, eateries and other outlets (i.e. the majority) accept cash only.  

The $US is widely accepted.  

Major world currencies can be changed in various locations including Da Nang International Airport, banks, hotels & some shops etc.  I find most clients bring a mix of payment methods when visiting Vietnam – cash in the form of major currencies i.e. USD, AUD, Euro, GBP, NZD, CAD etc and credit/debit/ATM cards.  Some use a pre-loaded credit card, but I understand card & bank fees should be checked-out before using these. 

From a practical point of view, ensure currency for exchange is clean, unmarked and unfolded – money exchanges can refuse to change otherwise. Many day-to-day purchases in Vietnam are for relatively small amounts so you should include small denomination VND notes.

Most of my Private Tours are paid at the end of your time with us in cash – $US or local currency equivalent (VND).

I know some of my clients appreciate making pre-payment before arrival to reduce the amount of cash carried, and I am happy to forward a PayPal invoice for an agreed amount on request. Up to 20% pre-payment is at no extra cost to you. Amounts over 20% and up to full pre-payment will incur an additional 4.4% to offset PayPal bank fees 

As you can understand, with running multiple tours each day I am unable to guide every tour.  But my team are trained to my exacting standards and are really enthusiastic English speakers – my tours are generally conducted in English.  I have a fluent Mandarin/English/Vietnamese speaking guide if required at extra cost.  All my team mates are university educated, government licensed and passionate about their country and our overseas visitors. 

In general the dress code is casual but conservative, unless you want to ‘dress up’ for dinner in our top-end hotels and restaurants.  Skimpy shorts and T-Shirts are considered offensive even in the larger cities like Hue, and definitely so in Vietnam’s rural areas.  Be aware that when entering someone’s house, local dwellings, or visiting religious sites like temples and pagodas, its a must-do to remove footwear at the front door.

Most importantly, respectful attire when visiting  temples and pagodas  is essential.  This means no shorts above the knee or singlet tops or to show bare midriffs or cleavage.  Shoulders, chest & legs should be covered and failure to do this will inevitably mean you are refused entry.  

Please check with me if you have any concerns, but remember our SE Asian sun can be fierce and more coverage also means better sun protection! 

I use modern air-conditioned vehicles depending on your party size.  6/7-seater SUV’s are used in the majority, 11 seat, 16 seat and 21 seat vehicles are used for larger groups.  Each vehicle is usually less than 2 years old, is maintained to manufacturers specifications and I only use drivers that are professionally trained to my stringent requirements.  Each vehicle carries cold bottled mineral water and chilled scented face towels for the duration of your tour.  My drivers are an integral part of your time with us and ensure your safety and well being at all times.

I regret I am not an expert on Vietnamese visa requirements – many change on an annual basis.  Neither can I advise on the benefits of VOA over visas granted directly by our embassy situated in your country.  However, I am happy to give general advice and to find details of our embassy in your country.

There is not really a right or wrong time to visit Vietnam as during most months of the year you will experience both sunshine and rain in varying quantities.  Welcome to my country, with 2000 + miles of coastline and three different weather systems!  Whilst Vietnam is typically warm and humid, the weather can vary significantly from one region to another due to the country’s length.   At times there has been snow (yes white snow!) in the mountainous far north whilst the beaches in the south enjoyed 32 °C and sunshine. It pays to imagine the country as three separate destinations when researching weather for your intended visit and the following information will hopefully help you.

Yes, very much so.  Babies & young children are revered in Vietnam and will be the centre of attention.  Our youngest client so far has been a 12 month old baby. My team are really adept at family groups, even ensuring the teenager is engaged throughout the day!

Yes, very much so.  Like young children our elders are revered in Vietnam.  Our oldest client so far has been a 97 years old grandmother in a family group.  She was wheelchair bound but took part in nearly all the 3 days activities when touring with us.  My team are really adept at family groups, and this is where are lovely drivers come into their own by ensuring the safety and well being of our older visitors.

With hotel pickup and return included, each half day tour will last up to 5 hours and your full day will last up to 10 hours. If you request a longer full day tour over 10 hours, I am happy to accommodate your request – even on the day, but do ask that you pay an additional $10 per hour towards my staff costs

Payment Terms For Private Vietnam Tours

Most of my Private Tours are paid at the end of your time with us in $US or local currency equivalent (VND). 

Occasionally, some higher value and/or complex Private Tour itineraries will require a deposit to secure your booking. This is payable on receipt of my PayPal invoice and will be shown in your quotation. The balance is payable in cash – $US or local currency equivalent (VND) at the end of your time with us.

Deposit Cancellation Terms:

 100% deposit return – if you cancel 28 days or more before your tour date

 50% deposit return – if you cancel between 28 & 14 days before your tour date, unless your tour slot can be resold

 Nil deposit return – if you cancel less than 14 days before your tour date, or for ‘no shows’
