Dr. Eggman

I might be wrong, but my guts tell me that Sega hopes to make a 5th member of Classic Cast. But of course it all will depend on audience reaction to her.

So, dear audience, what's your reaction?

Mine? Mixed, some thing work, some don't. Basic idea is cute. A nervous newbie, constantly tripping due to almost literal too large shoes to fill. She works better without the helmet, but still find comfort in hiding under it. And both her designs are pretty good, although I find Armored Design with more personality. But her backstory... too similar too Knuckles, at least I think so, everything is so vague with her. Is she last of her kind? Was she protecting magic gem? Was she tricked into working with Eggman? Is her power just climbing? Umm, definite maybe. If they kept her as such a big mystery I would expect satisfying answers. And her reformation doesn't grab me, since 1) Fang is mean to her, true, but not unfairly, she kept failing at every step 2) and due to that she never does anything for bad guys which makes me question why even make her "evil" in the first place? (And while I'm talking about Fang, I don't feel he accomplishes anything in the story that Eggman couldn't done himself, promotional material aside. He really should do less in his vehicle, because that's Eggman's thing).

Thumbs Up

I like the idea of trip, but will they keep her? Cream seems to have failed, sticks (and boom in general)has failed. Rouge in Prime is sort of working but is not a great fit. I just hope they look to develop her a bit further beyond as has been said a "female knuckles". Her design and dragon form is a winner, and she has the potential to link / unlock more stories with her race and origins...in maybe a "Superstars 2"?.?

Sticks didn't failed, Boom failed, she's casualty.

And Modern Cast is large, so everyone fight for spot. (And frankly Cream never was real 5th member. Even Prime Rouge is clearly getting least focus.)

I agree, modern has a huge cast.

I think Trip can work as a 5th member for new "classic era" / style games

Knuckles the Echidna

I'm of a different opinion.  I don't think Trip was intended as a recurring cast member; just a sort of guest star for the purposes of this game, like, say, Chip in Unleashed.  She could come back, sure, anytime Sonic Team (or perhaps more importantly the audience) wants, but I don't see a pressing need for it.  She'll be fine even if she's only ever in Superstars.

Miles ‘Tails’ Prower

The fact that they went and included a new playable "classic" Sonic character at all (a non-mammalian one at that) and gave her a move that actually affects traversal in an interesting way is great, and I wouldn't mind seeing Trip again. I'd like to see her fleshed out beyond "shy" though, and I don't really expect her to be a new main character or anything.

Superstars story spoiler:

I like that her super form is an actual dragon, but in practice it really doesn't work with the level design. Interesting idea, at least.

So, yeah. I like Trip a lot. Needs some fleshing out, but otherwise a great add to the larger cast, in my opinion.

Palas

Yeah, I didn't get the impression that he would be a mainstay at all. But I would  like that.

amazing character and a definitely different species than what we've been getting for some time

Reasons I think she's planned to be a mainstay - Very fact she's a new playable character. Not like Chip or even Sage, actually playable. The last one was Silver in 2006. (Don't count Avatar or minor spin-offs). - With her own campaign and story deeply focused on her, unlike Mighty & Ray, who were just a DLC - A simple fact that Sega might want a 2nd female in the classic core cast. - Her backstory doesn't feel fully told. It's either sloppy writing or leaving stuff for a sequel. - And lastly, unique Super Form. Like, the most unique Super Form we have ever seen (that still is super form, not Perfect Chaos).  That's faaaar too generous for a one-time character. And don't say "Chip", Gaia Colossus wasn't playable... in stages.

Feels a bit contradictory to me. Like yeah she has a story, compared to Mighty and Ray, but it's pretty threadbare.

I see this more as a reason not to expect her to come back. Any time she would be able to go Super, that's extra work compared to other characters. Once is one thing, but are they willing to commit to that cost going forward?

Anyway she's...fine, I guess. Mechanically she doesn't offer anything super unique but what she's got works well enough, her story's underdeveloped but her personality's cute. I'm increasingly disappointed in her design though, it just nags at me.

A super No.1 washedupgamer

A super No.1 washedupgamer

I like her. Her gameplay was fun and I wasn't offended by it at all. She made the levels fun as well. Her final boss was frustrating but It didn't take me too long to figure it out and beat it.

What she really need was more story as to why she was going through the island again. I feel like they wanted to show more about the backstory of the island during her story and about the dragon if the purple haze in the background of some of the boss fights were any hints but it wasn't conveyed well enough. Was it because of fang still at large and causing trouble on the island? Does eggman deploy the egg robo units ad a backup everytime his plans fail? Did the weird purple haze control some of the bosses?

It would've made more since to have her final stage be golden capital zone.

Shiny Gems

I like her as well. I liked her gameplay. Her rolling on walls and ceilings reminds me of Espio walking on such surfaces in Knuckles' Chaotix, and her jump and spin dash reminded me of Vector's jump and spin dash, which was also from Knuckles' Chaotix. Her gameplay was fun, and so was her story. She is such a fun character, and a cute one at that. I would love to see her appear in future Sonic games.

I just think she is a really good character. Her story was hard, especially the final boss, but it was worth it in the end.

Trip was never a bad guy. She was forced by Fang into working for him and Eggman, and lacked the courage to fight back until she snapped after Fang pushed her too far following the Golden Capital boss fight. She wasn't tricked like Knuckles was. It's not portrayed very clearly in-game, but the prequel comic gets the point across.

Either way, I like her. It's a bit of a shame that she isn't a new villain and never really was one either, because that prospect was interesting. I've heard others say that they'd have liked her to be a "villain that isn't very good at being a villain", and I tend to agree.  But she's very likeable regardless. Her unmasked design is great and her arc is the only part of Superstars story that really gets any emotional response from me. She's clearly nervous all of the time and gets beaten and bashed by Fang. When he doesn't do shit to help her in Lagoon City, a chance encounter with Amy leads to an insanely adorable moment when we see just how harmless and frightened she is.

In terms of her abilities, I feel like Superstars leaves a lot to be desired. The game is clearly designed for the original 4 only, and therefore Trip only gets an minor play on what everyone else is capable of. She's a Jack of All Trades, and kind of a master of some too.

  • She's got the same universal moveset as everyone else.
  • She doesn't have Sonic's drop dash, but Sonic is the only character without any unique traversal abilities.
  • She has Amy's double jump and extended spin attack radius.
  • She has a buffed version of Knuckles' wall climbing ability, making her faster, able to cling to slopes and ceilings and able to damage enemies as she climbs.
  • She can't fly like Tails can (unless Super), but between her double jump and superior wall/ceiling-climbing abilities, she can usually match Tails' vertical movement when it counts.

She's not exactly OP (again, unless Super), but you can see how they weren't comfortable with giving Trip any unique mechanics that would either break the game or risk being so niche that they didn't get used. She doesn't really bring anything new and different the table, except being a better climber than Knuckles if that even counts.

I hope she makes a comeback in future Classic games. But even more, I hope she eventually makes her grand return in the modern games. I wonder if she's just never North Star Island? Regardless, however she comes back I'd like it if she was given a new and unique moveset to take advantage of her potential abilities. Keep the ability to cling to ceilings, but get rid of wall climbing and the double jump. Other characters can already do both of those moves, so she really ought to do different actions instead.

I think people worry a little too much about explaining Trip's Story; same with a Knuckles playthrough of S3&K.  The "plot" is just a conceit to make you go through all the levels again but harder and fight a new final boss.  The story doesn't really matter.

DaBigJ

She's just another character in the laundry list of Sonic characters. I don't have any strong feelings for her either way.

King of Fanta

King of Fanta

She's fine, I guess? I don't have a strong opinion about her, but her design is nice, and I liked her very different super form.

This isn't really a valid carte blanche to tell whatever story it does have in the incredibly lackadaisical way Superstars did. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, almost 30 years ago, was more coherent in its storytelling and does explain why we're playing with Knuckles, and why only at that point. Nothing abut Trip is properly explained, so it's hard to know what we are even against as her.

It's not engaging at all, and it's not so much a matter of explaining as much as it's a matter of not raising questions that need explaining in the first place. The story matters because, by pointing towards something  about her species and super form, something about her newfound rivalry with Fang, something  about Eggrobo and something  about her home, but never looking twice in any direction, it's actively distracting.

Ryannumber1gamer

Ryannumber1gamer

I think she's a fine enough addition that suffers a bit from how barebones Superstars' story is. I think it's pretty interesting that they distinguish her from Knuckles by basically having her forced into the villainous acts that she helps partake in throughout the story, but it does also ultimately suffer from the fact that the story is  so  barebones that you need to read into a lot of it to kind of get it. I'd argue even S3&K is a bit more clear about Knuckles' heel-face turn, compared to Trip's.

It also doesn't help that - as mentioned - while Trip does have her own story campaign, it basically means nothing because the game plays out exactly as it did before. They don't explain where her story takes place after the main game, if it's meant to be a alternative take or something that's going on after Eggman is taken down, why Egg Robo fills in, compared to S3&K where obviously, Knuckles was meant to believe Eggman was working with him, so therefore Egg Robo makes more sense, etc. I think it would've been nice to at least have a new animated intro to establish things, like where this takes place in relation to the main story, what causes her to set out. Right now, it feels like a half-hearted attempt to ape Knuckles' storyline in S3&K without much of the effort.

I'm interested to see if they'll have the sense to strike when the iron is hot, so to speak. There was a real bad habit, even up to Infinite that new characters in this franchise get locked out of extra material. Trip could be expanded upon pretty well if they allow her to immediately join the classic cast within the comics, especially now when Nack's getting a miniseries, or hell - even add her to Dash/Speed Battle as a special promotional character. But it'll suck if we just have nothing new with her for years on end until SEGA arbitrarily decides it's time to allow her to appear.

I thought both stories take place shortly after the main one?

After Sonic defeats Eggman, both Egg Robo and Mecha Sonic try to take Knuckles down on their own. Similarly in Super Star after Eggman lost, Fang tries take over by himself, using Egg Robo for support.

For me the "meat" of the story happens in Sonic playthrough, not Knuckles/Trip. Except Knuckles actually causes you a lot of problems, so his reformation carries some weight (and if you read the manual, you know everything you need to know about him). Trips is more empathetic, but it never feels like she worked with bad guys in the first place, her reformation feels like an inevitability.

Trip's Story doesn't point to most of those though.  It's literally just a carbon copy of a Knuckles playthrough.  X is chilling with their animal friends, suddenly Eggrobo, badniks are everywhere and destroyed Robotnik bases are back and carbon copies of the bosses but harder have appeared, and there's a surprise alternative final boss at the last second.  It didn't make sense in 1994 and it doesn't make sense now, but it's not there to make sense.  It's there to be an alternative harder campaign, and in that respect the only real misstep in Trip's Story is calling it Trip's Story and not Hard Mode.

Trip's story lower-case, the plot of Story Mode and Last Story as a whole, have issues towards the end which could use clearing up.  But Trip's Story with a capital S is there just for fun.  (At which it also fails, but that's a whole other topic of discussion.)

Unamused

StaticMania

Knuckles didn't go through "every" level and had alternative paths that led to different areas where you fought bosses, 2 of the bosses were entirely original...technically 3.

The backgrounds changed to reflect that things were happening after Sonic's story, certain set pieces didn't happen the same since you were playing 'as' Knuckles, and it's not too much of a stretch for a random Egg-Robo to gain sentience and rebuild all the bosses.

The only thing that didn't really make sense is Flying Battery being one of the levels that came back.

sonicclaasic

sonicclaasic

I thought Trip was a very Interesting character to play as she Is very similar to Knuckles everyone saying on here. When I played her Story It had a very similar settings to Knuckles that replace Dr Eggman with the Eggrobo as a boss.

When you do the boss fights that reminds me of the Sonic & Knuckles game. Overall I enjoyed playing her Story campaign.

Amalgamous

As someone with mixed feelings on Superstars overall, Trip was the highlight for me. She has two really cool designs, a very impressive and unique super form and again: she's already playable. There's also the whole "designed by Oshima" thing. I wouldn't be surprised if this was meant to be her origin story and she'll be a mainstay going forward, just so Amy isn't the only girl character in the Classic Era. I'd like to see her make the jump to the Modern games too, if only so we can get more out of her than just "adorable and shy", but I suppose we'll have to see where that goes (e.g. if that tease in TailsTube pays off).

I hope trip will return as a playable character in future Classic Sonic games.

regularmilo

regularmilo

Trip is a pretty neat, cute character. I think her looks are bordering on almoooooost over-designed, at least for a classic Sonic game, but she's no more flashy than Vector, really.

Her gimmick is super fun and I've been having a blast going through Trip's story. I've been having fun with Superstars as just a Sonic game, but it's really a pretty good platformer and Trip's story really lets the level design shine and makes for some unique platforming challenges.

Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) in the TV series 'Knuckles'

‘Knuckles’ Got His Own Time To Shine and It Is Glorious

Image of Rachel Leishman

Few perfect little shows exist, but then we were given Knuckles . The Paramount+ series is a continuation of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie universe, and in it, we get to see Knuckles (Idris Elba) on his own, away from the evil of Dr. Robotonik, with Wade Whipple (Adam Pally).

A short and sweet series that just gives us a new pairing to love (in Wade and Knuckles), it doesn’t change much about the Sonic franchise, but it does serve to give characters like Wade their own chance to shine . For as much as this series is about Knuckles, it is also about Wade trying to be his own hero when everyone around him feels like laughing at him.

Knuckles destroys a bit too much of Maddie and Tom’s home, and so when Wade wants to embark on his quest to be a champion, he takes a road trip with Knuckles to a bowling tournament. It is not without its run-ins with The Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.), and we even get to meet people like Pistol Pete Whipple (Cary Elwes), Wade’s father who is a bowling legend.

But for all the action sequences and iconic Knuckles fights, what makes this show work is the same thing that exists in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies: a lot of heart to connect with.

We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t love Knuckles

The first Sonic movie brought us Ben Schwartz as Sonic and we were all instantly obsessed with this blue hedgehog, his rings, and his need to run really fast. The second movie brought in Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) as the two faced off against Knuckles, and the rest has been history. Yes, Knuckles is a bit too specific in how he needs to do things, but he is also the last of his kind and trying to find where he fits in the world.

That’s why his pairing with Wade is so good. Seeing Wade back with his family and how Knuckles reacts to Wade’s mother (Stockard Channing) is beyond sweet, and it makes this show so much more than just another installment. If you made Knuckles just a series of fights with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, we probably would have had a lot of fun with it.

But making it more about Knuckles and Wade helping each other made this the kind of show you want to revisit time and time again.

Keanu reeves' shadow casting makes the next sonic the hedgehog spinoff inevitable.

Confirmation that Keanu Reeves has joined the Sonic 3 cast as Shadow is exciting news both for the movie and the future of the franchise.

  • Keanu Reeves casting as Shadow in Sonic 3 hints at a potential spinoff show, following the success of Knuckles spin-off series.
  • Reeves' high profile suggests a major focus on Shadow, setting up future involvement in the franchise beyond Sonic 3.
  • Sonic 3's development of Shadow's character is crucial for a potential spinoff project, with Reeves indicating significant narrative dedication.

Keanu Reeves confirmed casting as Shadow for the upcoming sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an exciting development for the video game-based action movie, but the move also makes the franchise's future direction all but inevitable. After the success of the first two films, Sonic has already released a Knuckles spin-off series – highlighting the franchise's potential for expansion. However, while several Sonic characters could be suitable for similar treatment, Reeves' arrival indicates a clear story preference.

Despite long-standing rumors that Star Wars star Hayden Christensen would appear as Shadow , Reeves has been officially confirmed in the role. As perhaps the most iconic supporting character in the Sonic universe, Shadow has the potential to be a huge presence, both in Sonic 3 's story and future installments in the series. A recurring character in the games since his debut in 2001, Shadow has been both an ally and enemy of Sonic, making him one of the most enigmatic and flexible characters in the series. However, while some supporting roles might be relegated to the sidelines, Shadow looks set to play a major part moving forward.

What Is Knuckles, Paramount+'s New Sonic Show?

Keanu reeves voicing shadow strongly implies a spinoff show will happen after sonic 3.

The fact that a major star like Keanu Reeves has been selected to play Shadow strongly suggests that the character will be the next subject of a Sonic spin-off series . Had Sonic 3 set out to use the iconic anti-hero in a limited, one-and-done capacity, it seems much more likely that filmmakers would have avoided elevating his profile too high. Instead, they could have opted for a more reserved approach where Shadow's status would be more dictated by audience reaction. As it stands, Reeves' high profile means that Shadow will likely be a primary focus of the story, paving the way for extended involvement in the franchise.

Further evidence that a Shadow project will follow Sonic 3 comes from the franchise's track record. For instance, Sonic 2 cast major star Idris Elba as Knuckles before producing a separate Knuckles TV spin-off , in which Elba reprised his role. Given the success of this blueprint, combined with Reeves' greater profile and Shadow's pre-existing popularity, it seems highly likely that the character is being set up for similar treatment.

How Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Can Set Up Keanu Reeves' Shadow Spinoff Show

The primary way that Sonic 3 can help set up a Shadow spin-off project is by establishing the character's intriguing ambiguity. Even more so than Knuckles, Shadow embodies both light and dark. For instance, the character has been famously comfortable using firearms, setting him apart from the more family-friendly Sonic. Exploring this aspect of his character is not just essential for an accurate representation, but can help establish why Shadow would be a compelling protagonist for a spin-off series. Creating a sharp contrast with the rest of Sonic 's characters will make an additional Shadow project much more appealing.

For a Shadow project to succeed, it's vital that the character is given sufficient development time in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . Casting someone like Keanu Reeves is as clear an indicator as any that the movie will dedicate significant time to Shadow. This will not only help make him a compelling presence in the three- story, but will also mean that any future Shadow spin-off has an interesting established narrative to build on.

Change reality any way you like, Robotnik . Whatever you do I'll still fight you. And somehow, I'll win! Because no matter how ridiculous the situation, I'll never give up, Robotnik! I'LL NEVER GIVE UP!

Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions . He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with the ability to run at incredible speeds. Due to the amount of chaos energy he has absorbed, he can also transform into the psychotic Super Sonic .

Originally an ordinary hedgehog from Emerald Hill Zone on Mobius , Sonic met the kind Dr. Ovi Kintobor , who helped develop his speed. Unfortunately, Dr. Kintobor would accidentally turn into the evil tyrant Dr. Ivo Robotnik , whom Sonic would oppose for years alongside his band of Freedom Fighters .

One time, Robotnik got Sonic sent six months into the future with his crew, during which the doctor conquered all of Mobius. After years of battles and adventures however, Sonic managed to depose Robotnik. In the time that followed, Sonic got involved in a few incidents that threatened the planet.

Concept and creation [ ]

Nigel Kitching has said that the only character that he had in mind when creating Sonic's personality was The Fonz from the series Happy Days , but "without the sentimentality", in that he liked to spend time with his friends but only as long as it was understood that he was the coolest. [3]

Appearance [ ]

Sonic's original appearance, from Sonic the Comic #70. Art by Richard Elson.

Sonic is a short anthropomorphic hedgehog with long quills on the back of his head, two large conjoined eyeballs, a round belly with two short quill spines on his back, and a short tail. He has got blue fur that covers most of his body, and peach skin on his belly, muzzle and arms. Originally, he had black eyes, but after getting exposed to Chaos ' energy, his irises turned green.

For attire, Sonic wears white gloves and Power Sneakers .

History [ ]

Originally a normal brown hedgehog and resident of the Green Hill Zone , Sonic accidentally discovered the lab of benevolent scientist Dr. Ovi Kintobor . At this time, Sonic already claimed to be the fastest hedgehog on the planet, a fact which intrigued Kintobor. The two became friends, and Kintobor showed Sonic his various experiments and inventions.

Kintobor's main mission in life was to rid the planet Mobius of all evil. By using a machine that he called the Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor (or ROCC) and the Golden Rings of Mobius, he channelled the evil energy into six Chaos Emeralds . However, Kintobor lacked the seventh Emerald that would stabilize the machine. Sonic agreed to help Kintobor search for the final Emerald in exchange for Kintobor using his scientific knowledge to help Sonic to run faster. Although they never found the Emerald, Kintobor's experiments on Sonic's speed eventually bore fruit, when he invented a pair of friction-reducing Power Sneakers .

When testing the Power Sneakers for the first time, Kintobor put Sonic into a " Kinetic Gyratoscope " in order to test Sonic's speed. Sonic ended up breaking the speed of sound, causing an accident that fused Sonic's quills together and turning them a distinctly different blue colour. [4] Sonic honed his skills using the various structures around the Emerald Hill Zone and soon learned to control his super-speed, [2] allowing him to perform aerial feats and stunts. His signature move quickly became the "Sonic Spin Attack", which proved useful for destroying Badniks.

StC Sonic meets Robotnik

Sonic meeting the newly-transformed Dr. Ivo Robotnik, from Sonic the Comic #26 .

The next day, [5] Sonic was hanging out with Kintobor in the latter's lab. Wanting something to eat, the doctor only found a rotten egg (apparently from six months ago) in the fridge, and went to find some salt. However, Kintobor accidentally tripped on a cable and smashed the ROCC's control panel. The machine subsequently exploded, bathing Kintobor and the egg in evil Chaos energy. In the aftermath, Sonic saw that Kintobor had been transformed into the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik , who subsequently left the lab to "plan". [6]

A while later, Sonic and his friend Porker Lewis found a large Ring with Kintobor's brainwaves imprinted on it, which Lewis used to build the Kintobor Computer . However, a few days later, Sonic and Johnny Lightfoot realised that Porker had gone missing. Soon after, they were attacked by " Badniks ", robots who claimed to be Robotnik's minions. However, Sonic managed to destroy them with his new technique, the Spin Attack . Much to his horror however, he found out that Porker was inside of one of the Badniks. Sonic then learned from Lewis that Robotnik was planning to conquer Mobius and, along the way, he was kidnapping various mobians and using them as organic batteries for his Badniks. [6]

Wasting no time, Sonic raced across Mobius, liberating the mobians from the Badniks and collecting the Chaos Emeralds. He also had several encounters with Dr. Robotnik, although the doctor was defeated in all of them. [6] [7] Later, Sonic, Johnny and Porker were discussing what to do with the Chaos Emeralds, until Sonic accidentally absorbed their power and transformed him into the wicked Super Sonic for the first time. Fortunately, this transformation did not last long, and Sonic ended up in the Swampland Zone . There, he saved a two-tailed fox cub from drowning. The fox introduced himself to Sonic as Miles Prower , though everybody called him "Tails" because of his two tails. Tails would later on become Sonic's sidekick and best friend. [6]

Sometime later, Sonic and Tails realised that Dr. Robotnik had launched his Death Egg into space, which he could use to conquer the entirety of Mobius. Together, the heroes travelled across many Zones to free them from Robotnik's rule. Eventually, Sonic and Tails used the Tornado to go after the doctor's ship, the Wing Fortress . Afterward, Sonic managed to get onboard the Death Egg, and fought against Robotnik in his deadly battle armour . After defeating the doctor, a chain-reaction was triggered and Sonic escaped the Death Egg as it started to explode. Sonic was soon after saved by Tails in the Tornado while the Death Egg was left deactivated in space. [8] [9] [10] [11]

Sonic subsequently kept the Chaos Emeralds hidden in the North Cave in the Frozen Zone and fought off minor attacks by Robotnik. Unfortunately, on a trip to the Special Zone he discovered too late that the doctor had taken control of his old friend the Omni-Viewer , and he and his friends were thrown forward in time by six months. [4] [12]

Freedom Fighter [ ]

In Sonic's six month absence, Robotnik conquered Mobius. [12] Sonic immediately formed a Freedom Fighter organisation, operating out of Kintobor's old underground lab (along with a " Kintobor Computer " based on his brain patterns) with his friends Tails, Johnny Lightfoot and Porker Lewis. [13] Amy Rose joined later, much to Sonic's annoyance due to her insistence she was his girlfriend, [14] and a brief alliance was formed with Captain Plunder and the Sky Pirates. [15] Sonic spent the next few months sabotaging Robotnik's operations, liberating Badnik Processing Plants, fighting off assassins such as Metallix the Metal Sonic [16] and Metamorphia , [17] [18] and keeping the Emeralds safe. He also was present at the destruction of an ancient robot called a Sentinel , which would haunt him later. [19]

When Robotnik's Death Egg II crashed on the legendary Floating Island , [20] Sonic went after and finally captured the tyrant. In the process he ran afoul of Knuckles the Echidna , who had been duped by Robotnik, and they established a long-standing rivalry. [21] Unfortunately it turned out Robotnik had allowed himself to be captured so Knuckles could track him to Sonic's base and steal the Chaos Emeralds. [22] The plan worked and the Emeralds were combined with the Floating Island's Emeralds. However, when Robotnik attempted to double-cross Knuckles and steal the Emerald Energy for himself, Knuckles realised the truth that Robotnik was evil and defeated him. [23] In revenge for the defeat, Robotnik invaded and destroyed Sonic's base. [24]

Now forced to go nomadic disguised as "Bob Beaky" and his Travelling Circus , Sonic attempted to prevent the Death Egg II from being relaunched. Sonic teamed up with Knuckles to prevent the launch, initially failing [25] and having to bring it down from the inside by retrieving the Master Emerald from Robotnik. In return for saving the Emerald, Sonic made Knuckles allow the Emerald Hill residents to flee to the Mushroom Hill Zone for refuge; [26] he spent the next few weeks deliberately tracking down and rescuing every Emerald Hill prisoner. [27]

The twin threats of Commander Brutus and the Brotherhood of Metallix both occurred in the same time-frame, pushing Sonic to his limits and both threatening to seize Mobius from Robotnik. Sonic was conned by Robotnik into going after the Brotherhood (even though Robotnik could've wiped them out via an auto-destruct program) and was forced to leave Porker behind on the Miracle Planet for a month as a result, [28] while Brutus was only driven off by Sonic turning Super. [29] The Brotherhood of Metallix later rewrote history so Robotnik was never created from Kintobor, allowing them to take over Mobius and wipe out its inhabitants; working with Omni-Viewer and the Chaotix Crew , Sonic was forced to go back in time and ensure that Robotnik was created in order to save the planet. To Sonic's disgust, this makes him responsible for Robotnik's tyranny. [30] As an act of revenge, he deliberately called up Robotnik to taunt him with his failed plans before helping a Metropolis Zone mob destroy one of Robotnik's statues. [31]

The road to victory [ ]

A turning-point occurred when Sonic was transformed into Super Sonic by accident when there was no enemy to fight - Super immediately tried to kill the Freedom Fighters, [32] with Sonic at one point thinking he'd been successful. [33] To stop Super, the chaos energy was drained through a Star Post from Sonic into the Special Zone but this accidentally caused Super to gain an independent existence from Sonic. [34] Worried about the damage that Super Sonic could cause in the Special Zone, Sonic had the Omni-Viewer transport him into the Special Zone so that he could track Super down and stop him. [35] As a temporary measure, Super was frozen in time inside the Omni-Viewer, but this trapped Sonic in the Special Zone. [36]

After discovering that Omni was only able to slow time to a crawl and that Super Sonic would eventually escape, as well as fending off attempts to steal Super Sonic by Lord Sidewinder 's gang [37] and Nack the Weasel , Sonic and Chaotix buried Omni-Viewer within the Black Asteroid in the hopes that Super Sonic would remain trapped even if he eventually escaped the Omni-Viewer. [38] Sonic continued to live in Chaotix's asteroid headquarters for several months, before eventually moving into his own apartment in New Tek City. He was able to contact the Freedom Fighters on Mobius through a video link-up. Sonic developed a heavy dislike of the Zone, its craziness [39] and its superheroes (such as the Zed Monkeys [40] ), constantly wanting to find a way home.

After stopping the villainous Doctor Plague , [41] Sonic learned that Super Sonic had managed to escape the Omni-Viewer, charging himself up into an electron bomb in order to destroy the Black Asteroid from within and escape that too. At the same time, Lord Sidewinder (now driven to insanity) intended to take control of Super Sonic and take control over the whole Special Zone. [42] Sonic and Chaotix were able to defeat Sidewinder and his gang, but could find no way to prevent the Black Asteroid from exploding. Even worse, the recharged Omni-Viewer told Sonic that Robotnik had found and captured the Emerald Hill Folk. Sonic was torn between returning home to help his friends, and remaining in the Special Zone to battle Super Sonic. However, when Sonic learned that the explosion of the Black Asteroid would cause an electromagnetic pulse that would wipe out every computer on the planet, Sonic had Omni teleport the Black Asteroid to Mobius. [43]

The electromagnetic pulse wiped out all of Robotnik's computer systems and destroyed his Badnik armies. Sonic finally returned to Mobius, where he helped to capture Robotnik. Robotnik subsequently escaped with the help of Grimer , but Sonic was able to prevent them from re-taking control of their systems by overloading the power core of Citadel Robotnik . The Citadel was destroyed in a great explosion, symbolizing the end of tyranny. [44]

Free Mobius [ ]

The initial days of freedom left Sonic bewildered half the time. He was annoyed seeing former enemies like the Marxio Brothers profiting as legitimate businessmen and being unable to tell if they were still evil. [45] He also had problems with boredom and a worry that, with Robotnik gone, there was nothing for him to do. [46] The politics of Mobius' first post-Robotnik election left Sonic bored to death, but an on-the-spot remark by him led to the establishment of a system of regional governments - Zone Leaders - over a global government. [47] He also tried several times to locate the missing Super Sonic, not realising the electromagnetic pulse had caused temporary amnesia and turned Super into a pacifist.

He battled Robotnik once more on Flickies' Island , determined not to allow another takeover, [48] only to witness Robotnik abducted by a Prosecutor of the Drakon Empire . [49] This led to repeated clashes against the Empire as Robotnik made a deal with the Drakon House of War 's leader Ko-Dorr . Sonic was captured and charged with the destruction of a Sentinel, [50] and forced to prove his innocence in combat against a new model Metallix (as Drakon law decides guilt or innocence in trial-by-combat). [51] With Tails' help, the Metallix was destroyed, thus making Sonic innocent in the eyes of Drakon law. Ko-Dorr allowed Sonic to leave, over Robotnik's protests. [52] Sonic battled attempts by the Drakons to invade Mobius for the Chaos Emeralds, [53] fending them off until they invaded the Floating Island, where they were betrayed by Robotnik and his assistant Grimer . [54]

Robotnik absorbed the Chaos Emerald's powers and became a god, reshaping reality to create a Mobius where Sonic had never existed. Traumatized by the sights - Amy and Johnny frightened civilians, Porker a lackey of Robotnik, Tails dead and Emerald Hill a metal wasteland - Sonic attempted to bring hope to the people that Robotnik could be beaten. Robotnik then proceeded to put Sonic through a myriad of torments, resurrecting several of Sonic's most dangerous foes, pitting him against an evil version of Knuckles, stripping Sonic of his speed, and finally showing Sonic that he was destined to fight Robotnik for sixty-five years and never win. Despite all of this, Sonic vowed to fight Robotnik to the end no matter what, and then manipulated the doctor's ego, taunting him into restoring Sonic's powers and Knuckles' memories of the original timeline by telling Robotnik that he was scared of losing. With Knuckles' help, Sonic used the grey Chaos Emerald to drain Robotnik of his new-found powers, reverting Mobius to normal and apparently shrinking Robotnik to nothing in the process. [55] [56]

Shanazar [ ]

Robotnik's lackey Grimer discovered Robotnik still lived in a sub-atomic universe and attempted to retrieve him, with Sonic following. This left him stranded in another universe once again, this time on the planet of Shanazar , a world run on magic and similar to Arabian Nights fantasy. It turned out Robotnik had reverted to Kintobor when he landed on Shanazar and had become the Grand Vizier of Princess Kupacius (ruler of a kingdom also called Shanazar). Unfortunately it was soon revealed that the transformation was only temporary and Robotnik returned soon after Sonic's arrival. Sonic also found himself placed in a moral dilemma regarding the Shanazar custom of allowing children to contain the spirit of mighty genies; while it was beneficial to both sides and the children were willing, it would reduce their life spans to five years. Unable to accept this, Sonic destroyed the Mystic Globe that made the ceremony possible and thus made himself an enemy of the kingdom. Robotnik then ordered a court magician to erase all memory of the device that Sonic used to come to Shanazar from Sonic's mind, effectively leaving the heroic hedgehog stranded.

Sonic travelled the world as a fugitive, saving lives and fighting multiple villains, including a hive-mind alien race called the Plax, whilst trying to both find a way home and stop Robotnik's plans. He was soon joined by Amy Rose, who was using the Eternity Ring to try and retrieve Sonic but accidentally ended up trapped with him. Together they eventually went after Robotnik directly, discovering he had plans to teleport back to Mobius by increasing the size of Shanazar and colliding the two planets - he would then take control in the resulting devastation. His process backfired, instead causing the two planets to merge into one and cause dimensional portals across Mobius to open up to "New Zones", other dimensions and other times. Enraged, Robotnik tried to attack Sonic and was beaten back.

Back on Mobius, Sonic immediately started exploring the portals and new Zones alongside Amy and Tekno .

Apocalypse [ ]

Driven insane, Robotnik decided to destroy Mobius and gained the help of the Plax in doing so. On Christmas Eve, Mobius began to suffer complete environmental collapse, endangering countless lives. Sonic, Amy, Tekno and Shortfuse the Cybernik launched a direct assault on Robotnik to stop him, just barely succeeding. Much to Sonic's joy afterwards, Robotnik appeared to be dead.

It turned out the Doctor had survived and grown ever more depressed. In an attempt to help him, Robotnik's lackey Grimer released the ancient Chaos creature upon Mobius. In battle against it in Metropolis Zone, Sonic was briefly trapped inside it and emerged with green eyes due to absorbing more chaos energy. Chaos attacked again and killed Johnny Lightfoot. Sonic blamed himself for the death, admitting he'd never thought anyone would really be killed in all the years he'd risked their lives, and temporarily quit the Freedom Fighters.

Sonic rejoined shortly afterwards, having matured significantly, and was subsequently warped to the ancient past, witnessing both the Echidna-Drakon War and the creation of Chaos. Determined to destroy Chaos in the past so he couldn't kill Johnny in the present, Sonic launched an attack that saw him trapped inside Chaos again and nearly drowned; the Echidnas warped him back to the present, just in time to battle Chaos at his most powerful. Sonic was able to shrug off Chaos' ability to cause fear by focusing on rage but the final blow came when Super Sonic returned, needing chaos energy to remain alive; with the help of his friend Ebony , he'd tracked down Chaos and absorbed all of his energy. Unfortunately this caused Super Sonic to revert back to his former psychotic self and attempt to slaughter the Freedom Fighters. Determined to stop any more of his friends from being killed, Sonic had Ebony recombine the two of them into one being once more.

Personality [ ]

STC78-Sonic

Sonic refusing to admit defeat.

Sonic, while a hero with a strong moral code, has a rough attitude. He is somewhat bossy, cocky, immature, arrogant, and a bit of a jerk, often insulting or belittling his friends, especially Tails. Others regularly referred to his "strange sense of humour", particularly in response to his habit to pretend to be defeated despite being in control of the situation; [23] [57] on one such occasion, Sonic deliberately let Tails think he was dead for a cheap laugh. [58] Sonic frequently made cruel jokes at the expense of Tails, whom he often refers to as "pixel brain". However, despite his flaws, Sonic truly does care about his friends and their well-being, showing genuine concern when he thinks that they are in serious danger. He also showed anger when Porker Lewis quit the Freedom Fighters; [59] writer Nigel Kitching has stated in a forum post that this was "because he didn't want Porker to go - not because he despised him for his cowardice but because he was just so desperate for Porker to stay. It's just Sonic's inability to express his feelings get him so screwed up." [60]

Sonic takes the protection of Mobius seriously; at the same time, he gets bored and restless when there's no new challenge or threat, and will often deliberately go to seek one out. [46] He will also never admit defeat, no matter how strongly the odds are stacked against him. A perfect example of this is in Sonic the Comic #129 , "Robotnik Reigns Supreme, Part 3", in which Sonic faces off against a Robotnik who has attained godlike reality-warping powers. Sonic responds as follows: "Change reality any way you like, Robotnik. Whatever you do I'll still fight you. And somehow, I'll win! Because no matter how ridiculous the situation, I'll never give up, Robotnik! I'LL NEVER GIVE UP!" (Nigel Kitching contrasted Sonic's drive to Knuckles the Echidna , who was willing to give up and go down with the Floating Island - something Sonic would never do.) [61]

Sonic is an egomaniac, but has a terrible fear of being shown up. His rivalry with Knuckles stems from Sonic's deep-seated suspicion that Knuckles is his superior. He is also embarrassed by Amy Rose (and girls in general) because she makes him uncomfortable and in danger of not looking cool. [62] Sonic is also highly intelligent, with a natural flair for cunning plans, such as his strategy to defeat the Brotherhood of Metallix, [28] his plan to send the Black Asteroid to Mobius, [43] and his plan to defeat Robotnik when he had attained godlike power.

Through most of the series, Sonic was willing to endanger not only his own safety but those of his friends without a second thought. [62] However, after the death of Johnny Lightfoot at the hands of the Chaos creature , Sonic genuinely blamed himself and admitted that, no matter how much he risked his friends' lives, he never thought that anyone would actually die, temporarily quitting the Freedom Fighters [63] and returning with a less egocentric attitude and a stronger will. [64] Following this, Sonic now has a real problem letting his friends risk themselves, although he is still "totally reckless" with his own safety. [65]

Powers and abilities [ ]

Most of Sonic's abilities stem from his central power of super speed; he can run faster than the speed of sound. The momentum of his speed allows him to smash robots with his fists and feet, and by curling up into a ball he can smash into objects with great force, a move called the Spin Attack .

By running at full speed around an enemy or structure, he forms a Sonic Cyclone , which has varied results of putting out fires, breaking out of prisons, blowing enemies away or even sinking them underwater. In a variation of the Sonic Cyclone, Sonic can also move at high speeds around such things as bombs or missiles to encase them in a "cocoon of speed," which suppresses the explosion within the vortex and keeps it from damaging anyone or anything around it.

Sonic Vibrate Hands

Sonic vibrating his hands at super speed to loosen the ropes around himself and Porker, from Sonic the Comic #19 . Art by Richard Elson .

By vibrating his hands and feet at super speed, Sonic has the ability to break free of various restraints. With this method, he has been shown to loosen rope bindings, [57] shatter blocks of ice around his feet, [66] and weaken and break plant roots. [67] He can also vibrate air molecules around him to create a force-field to protect himself. [20] [23]

Sonic is so fast that he rarely pushes the limits of his speed. He regularly breaks the sound barrier and has on previous occasions shown the ability to run halfway around Mobius in five seconds, [68] and run the entire way around the Miracle Planet in order to build momentum for a Spin Attack. [16] He once pushed himself to the limits of his speed to stop two D.R.A.T. missiles that had been fired in opposite directions; this caused him to start moving so fast that, even when he perceived himself to be walking slowly, everything around him seemed frozen. He returned to normal by forcibly relaxing himself (by looking up trainspotting websites). [69]

Super Sonic [ ]

After being exposed to massive amounts of chaos energy from the Chaos Emeralds , Sonic gained the ability to transform into the powerful Super Sonic when under extreme stress or when exposed to more chaos energy. As Super Sonic, all of Sonic's natural abilities are greatly enhanced, and he also gains the ability to fly and project energy blasts; however, Super Sonic possesses his own psychotic personality that Sonic cannot control, creating the risk that he would attack his allies as well as his enemies if 'provoked'.

Weaknesses [ ]

Initially, Sonic was unable to swim. When underwater, he was forced to gulp air from bubbles in order to stop himself from drowning. [70] However, he eventually took swimming lessons, allowing him to operate at his full effectiveness underwater when he wore a special diving suit designed by Tekno the Canary . [71]

Relationships [ ]

Amy rose [ ].

Amy has an unrequited crush on Sonic and often flirts with him or calls herself his girlfriend, which greatly annoys him. Several times, Sonic would be left exasperated by either civilians assuming the two were dating (which Amy would play along with) or her playing up the crush - because of this, when trapped on the Miracle Planet with her, he faked being lost for two days to get away from her. [72]

  • One particular idea that never made it into the comics included Sonic in a love triangle with Amy and Johnny Lightfoot : Johnny would be romantically attracted to Amy, Amy would be platonically friendly with Johnny, and Sonic would be troubled by feelings of jealousy, forcing him to assess whether he had feelings for a girl that he could not stand.
