South India Temple Tour Itinerary Package

Day 1 : Arrival in Chennai

Your 12 days of south India temple tour will commence upon your arrival in Chennai. You will be greeted by our tour representative who will get you checked in to your hotel for relaxation, dinner followed by an overnight stay.

Day 2 : Chennai – Tirupati – Chennai

After having your breakfast at the hotel in the morning you will be made to head out to the temple tour destination of the day, Tirupati. Tirupati is an ancient holy Hindu town located in Andhra Pradesh which is about 3 to 4 hours of drive away. The town is considered so holy that it receives almost 1 lakh visitors and devotees on a daily basis. On reaching Tirupati you will be taken to some of the most famous temples in Tirupati which will include – Sri Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanoor, Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Srinivasa Mangapuram, Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Kapila Teertham, Sri Kodandaramaswami Temple, Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple at Srikalahasti and Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Narayanavanam. After the completion of temple Darshan and offering your prayer you will be driven back to your hotel in Chennai to get ready for the next day and an overnight stay.

Day 3 : Chennai – Kanchipuram – Mamallapuram

Today, after breakfast, early in the morning you will be made to head for your next destination to Mahabalipuram which is also known as Mamallapuram with a quick stopover at Kanchipuram en route. Did you know that Kanchipuram is also known as the city of 1000 temples? On Reaching Kanchipuram you will be taken around so that you get the importance and vibrancy that this place has to offer. Kanchipuram is one of the holiest places in India which has also served as the capital of the cholas during the 2nd century. After some sightseeing around you will be finally headed to Mahabalipuram. On reaching you will be first checked in to your hotel before starting the sightseeing. After freshening up you will be taken for sightseeing to Krishna Mandapam and the iconic shore temples of the 2nd century. The shore temple is a must visit in Mahabalipuram which is located right on the shore of Arabian Sea and displays the Dravidian architecture in its complete glory. Finally after the sightseeing, by sundown you will be made to head back to your hotel in Mamallapuram for an overnight stay.

Day 4 : Mamallapuram – Tiruvannamalai – Pondicherry

Early in the morning, post breakfast, you will be headed to Pondicherry with a small stopover in Tiruvannamalai for a brief excursion. The entire journey from Mamallapuram to Pondicherry is about 5 to 6 hours of drive by road. On the way you will be taken for an excursion to Tiruvannamalai. Tiruvannamalai is another one of the holiest towns in Tamil Nadu and its name literally translates into Red Mountain, inspired by the volcano mountain located right behind it. This holy town is also an ancient heritage site which is also the hub of Saiva religion. You will be taken to Arunachal hill temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built during the 9th century. Finally you will be driven to Pondicherry or Puducherry where on arrival you will be immediately checked in to your hotel where you will be staying for the night.

Day 5 : Pondicherry Sightseeing

This day in Pondicherry will be reserved for a full day of sightseeing excursion. After having breakfast in the morning you will be taken for an assisted full day of Pondicherry sightseeing to some of the most popular locations.

Sri Aurobindo ashram will be your first destination. Established in 1926, this has to be one of the most unique and extremely popular ashrams dedicated to the iconic sage, saint, philosopher and thinker Sri Aurobindo. Your next destination will be the Pondicherry museum which will shed light on the history this small, quaint town has been through. The building of the museum belonged to an ex French administrator and displays various rare sculptures and other stuff made from precious and semi-precious stones like beads, necklaces, temple lamps and so much more. Church of the sacred heart Jesus will be the next place of interest on the list. Your Pondicherry experience remains incomplete without an interesting visit to the church. This 17th century church is one of Pondi’s finest churches and a must visit. You will end your list of places by a final visit to Manakula Vinayagar Koil Temple which is a 300 year old temple dedicated to lord Ganesh and boasts of golden spire on top.

Finally you will be taken back to your hotel in Pondi for an overnight stay.

Day 6 : Pondicherry – Chidambaram – Thanjavur

After breakfast in the morning you will be made to head on to your next destination of Thanjavur or initially known as Tanjor which is about 5 hours of road journey away. En route you will be stopping over at Chidambaram which is dedicated to Lord Nataraja and is one of the rare places that houses and enshrines both idols of Lord Shiva and Vishnu under the same roof. It is also rare for being the temple that is solely dedicated to the dance form of Bharatnatyam and also where Lord Shiva is shown in the form of an idol rather than the customary lingam. Spreading out over an area of about 40 acres with towering gopurams on either sides, separated by 5 Sabhas is not just a holy land but is also an inspiring destination for devotees.

Finally you will be made to head on to your final destination in Thanjavur where you will be checked in to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 7 : Thanjavur – Tiruchirappalli (Trichy)

Early in the morning after breakfast you will be checked out of your hotel and headed for your complete sightseeing of the famous sightseeing locations in Thanjavur. This will include visits to places like Brihadeshwara Temple – a UNESCO world heritage site, Great living Chola temples – another interesting UNESCO world heritage site. By afternoon you will be headed on to Trichy. On arrival in Trichy you will be checked in to your hotel. The remainder of the evening will be free for you to spend in leisure followed by an overnight stay.

Day 8 : Trichy Temple Tour – Madurai

Early in the morning, post breakfast, you will be checked out of your hotel and made to head for your next destination of Madurai. Before leaving for Madurai you will be taken for a temple tour of Trichy city. Firstly you will be taken to the holy island temple town of Srirangam. This holy island is over 600 acres wide across the 7 gigantic walls of Srirangam Temple. It is famous for housing over 22 different gopurams with one of them making it to the Guinness world record for being the tallest Gopuram in the world. Your next location will be the famous landmark of Trichy, the fort. The rock in the fort is the oldest piece of rock in the world with the main attraction being a small temple within the fort too. Finally you will be headed to Madurai where on reaching you shall be checked in to your hotel here for an overnight stay.

Day 9 : Madurai Sightseeing

A full day of temple hopping in Madurai will begin early in the morning, post breakfast. Madurai is another holy city that resides just next to the holy river Vaigai. The place boasts of a great cultural heritage and a very strong background of mythological accounts. The city was constructed by the pandya kings in the shape of a lotus which has also earned its name of being the lotus city. These sightseeing will include visit to places like Meenakshi Amman Temple, Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal, Vaigai Dam, Alagar Kovil and Koodal Azhagar Temple. After a full day of exploring the temples in the holy town of Madurai and shopping for souvenirs, you will be taken back to your hotel in Madurai for an overnight stay.

Day 10 : Madurai – Kanyakumari

After having your breakfast in the morning and having checked out of your hotel in Madurai you will be headed to your next destination of the shore city of Kanyakumari. This road journey will be about 4 to 5 hours long. On reaching Kanyakumari you will be taken for a sightseeing expedition before checking into your hotel. This half day of sightseeing will include visit to places like: Swami Vivekananda’s memorial which is built in a small rocky island which is just 200 meters away from the shore; Kumari Amman Temple – the temple is situated near the seashore and as per mythology goddess Devi is said to have performed intense prayers in order to get the hand of the lord in marriage to her and Thiruvallur statue. Finally you will be checked in to your hotel in Kanyakumari for an overnight stay.

Day 11 : Kanyakumari – Trivandrum

After having your breakfast in the morning you will be taken to Trivandrum which is about 3 to 4 hours away from Kanyakumari. You will be reaching Trivandrum by afternoon and immediately checked in to your hotel. After freshening up a little bit you will be taken for some sightseeing in Trivandrum. This will include visits to places like Padmanabha Swamy Temple which is famous for being the wealthiest temple in the world and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This will be followed by a visit to Napier museum which is a 19th century monument and displays a rare and unique collection of carvings and murals. Finally you will be headed to your hotel in Trivandrum where you will be checked in and stay for the night.

Day 12 : Trivandrum Departure

Post breakfast in the morning you will be checked out of your hotel and made to depart for your point of departure. The drop off at the place of departure like airport or railway station will mark the end of your 12 days and 11 nights of South India Temple Tour Package .

Day 01: Trivandrum Arrival – Kanyakumari (100 Kms Drive)

After arrival at Trivandrum airport, meet our representative and transfer to visit Padmaswamy & Ganapathy Temple & Kovalam Beach, later drive to Kanyakumari for check-in the hotel and overnight stay.

Day 02: Kanyakumari – Madurai (250 Kms Drive)

Early morning visit Kanyakumari Temple where Mata Parvati is worshipped. Later visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar statue. Later proceed to Madurai & check-in the hotel for Overnight stay.

Day 03: Leisure at Madurai

Next day in the early morning transfer to Rameshwaram – the place from where Lord Rama, built a bridge across the sea to rescue his consort Sita, from her abductor, Ravana. Arrive at Rameshwaram On arrival visit APJ Abdul Kalam Museum – Small museum in the childhood home of India’s one-time president Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. In the evening visit beautiful Ramanathan temple. Later check-in the hotel & overnight stay.

Day 05: Leisure at Rameshwaram

Today in the early morning visit beautiful Ramanath Swamy Temple (one of the 12 Jyotirlinga). And also we will see Adam’s Bridge (Popular of Ram Setu), Thiruppullani temple & Dhanushkodi and more. Later back to hotel for Dinner & overnight stay.

Day 06: Rameshwaram – Tirchy (230 Kms Drive)

Next day in the morning after breakfast drive to Trichy. Visit the Brihadeeshwara temple – a World Heritage site and Vyonkoji Palace museum. Also visit Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple – largest temple in India and one of the largest religious complexes in the world.

Day 07: Tirchy – Mahabalipuram (300 Kms Drive)

In the morning after breakfast transfer to Mahabalipuram, its long drive for hole day. After arrive at Mahabalipuram check-in the hotel and overnight stay.

Day 08: Mahabalipuram – Kanchipuram – Tirupati (230 Kms Drive)

Next day in the early morning visit Shore Temple, Arjuna Pinance, Panch Rathas and more if possible. Later transfer to Tirupati and on the way we will also visit Kanchipuram (Kanchi Kamakshi Temple), later drive towards Tirupati for check-in the hotel and overnight stay.

Day 09: Tirupati Balaji Darshan

Today in the early morning we will get the darshan of Tirupati Balaji and stay at Tirpati.

Begin the day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel. Later, check out of the hotel. Leave for a sightseeing tour of Mahabalipuram. Explore the charming monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Start sightseeing with the stunning Shore Temple. Marvel at the Five Ratha temples, Arjuna’s Penance and the Tiger caves. Later, drive to Pondicherry.

On your arrival, check-in at one of our listed hotels. There are no more plans for the day. Opt for leisurely walk to the beach or the local markets of Pondicherry.

Upon arrival at Swamimalai, transfer to one of our listed hotels. Later in the day, visit the Swamimalai Murugan Temple.

Start the day with breakfast at the hotel. Later, head straight to Tanjore. Known as the city of temples, the ancient town of Thanjavur has many famous temples in and around the city including the Navagraha temples. Upon arrival in the town, check-in at one of our listed hotels.

Rest for a while after which you can set out on a guided city tour of Tanjore. Explore the tourist destinations that includes the Vijayanagar Fort, Shiva Ganga Garden, Aalangudi temple, and the Chandra Bagawan Temple. Day 1 Arrival Chennai

Day 2 Chennai – Mahabalipuram

Breakfast at hotel, drive to  Mahabalipuram, on arrival check into hotel.

Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram, is a town on a strip of land between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake, in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for its temples and monuments built by the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries. The seafront Shore Temple comprises 3 ornate granite shrines. Krishna’s Butter Ball is a massive boulder balanced on a small hill near the Ganesha Ratha stone temple.

Day 3 Mahabaliuram – Kanchipuram – Mahabalipuram

After breakfast drive to Kanchipuram.

Kanchipuram is one of India’s seven sacred cities and one of its loveliest temple towns also known for its handloom silks, followed by visit to temples Kailasnathar, Vaikuntaperumal, Ekambareshwara, Kamakshiamma and Sakiswarar. We visit Kailasanatha Temple. The temple is famous for exquisite carvings & attracts devotees & tourists alike. There are 58 small shrines situated around the main shrine, as a compound wall. Next we visit Ekambaranatha, ancient temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. The 3000 year old mango tree inside the temple has 4 branches each yielding different variety of mangoes. Before returning to Mahabalipuram we will also visit Kamakshi Amman Temple, known as Parabrahmaroonpini. You can do shopping of silk cloth market and weavers homes.

Later return to Mahabalipuram for overnight stay.

Day 4 Mahabalipuram - Tanjore (300 Km - 06 Hrs)

Breakfast at hotel, proceed for Tanjore.

Tanjore, called the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu. Later we visit Brihadeshwara temple, also known as Big Temple, Built in the 10th Century A.D., by Raja “Raja Chola”, the Temple Tower is capped by an 81.3 tones round monolithic cupola. The temple is considered an engineering skill of the Chola architects who planned its construction in such a way that the shadow of the cupola never falls on the ground.

Day 5 Tanjore - Madurai Via Trichy (200 Km - 04 Hrs)

After breakfast at hotel, drive for Madurai, rich cultural heritage passed for more than 2500 years old & has been an important commercial centre as early as 550 AD. Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the pre Christian era. Madurai where the people wake up at the chant of hymns is proud of magnificent ‘The Meenakshi-Sundareswara Temple. Of its 12 gopurams, four of the tallest stand at the outer walls of the temple. Later we visit Rockfort most famed landmark is an 83 m high rock which is the only outcrop in the otherwise flat land of the city. The most amazing fact about the rock is that it is one of the oldest in the world approximately 3,800 million years, which makes it as old as the rocks of Greenland & older than the Himalayas.

Day 6 Madurai

In the morning after breakfast you have an opportunity to take a Half Day Tour to Meenakshi Sundareshwar. It was first built 2000 years ago & was substantially expanded between the years (1623-55 AD). Initially there was only the Shiva temple. A striking feature of the temple is the astonishing structure known as Ayiramkaal mandapam or the Hall of a thousand pillars in the outermost corridor.

Day 1 : Arrival at Chennai

On the very first day of your tour, when you will reach Chennai, the representative of Travelogy India will meet you and greet you ‘Namaste’. A traditional process of warm welcome will be held, after that you will be assisted by our representative to the pre booked hotel for check-in.

There you will be handed over with all the tour related documents and will be given a short explanation about the tour by him. You can relax in the hotel for the rest of the day.

Day 2 : Around Chennai

On the 2nd day of the tour, we shall take you around some of the prominent places of Chennai. So, soon after a good South Indian breakfast, we shall visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple - One of the most impressive temples of Chennai, its architecture is beyond words!  Take a good “darshan” of this temple. After this we move on towards Kalakshetra – a leading school of Tamil Classical Dance and Music . Enjoy the South Indian form of dance here as students keep on practicing.

After enjoying the dance form, we shall take you to San Thome Cathedral . Founded by Portuguese, it has one of the finest Gothic paintings around. Story of “Doubting Tomas” is famous of this place. Once you finish visiting this place, enjoy your lunch at one of the finest restaurants of Chennai.

After lunch, get on the car to reach Fort St. George . Established by Britishers, today it houses Tamilnadu’s Legislative Assembly, Secretariat and other buildings . A relic to see in itself!

In the evening we shall take you for shopping spree . Late evening, we shall return to the hotel for night stay.

Day 3 : Chennai – Tirupati – Mahabalipuram (by surface approx 325 kms / 8-9 hrs)

Soon after lunch, we shall set off towards Mahabalipuram . A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it contains monolithic temples. Out of the temples which are famous include Anjuna’s penance, caves of Govardhan Dhari and Mahishasura Mardini. The five Rathas and the Shore temple too are famous of this place. Stay overnight at Mahabalipuram Hotel.

Day 4 : Mahbalipuram – Pondicherry – Tanjore (by surface approx 265 kms / 7 hrs)

Next day get up to a refreshing breakfast soon after which we shall move towards Pondicherry . It’s a 2 hours drive down the lane and on reaching here we shall show some of the famous Churches. Pondicherry is basically a land of quiet lanes. Here we shall take you to Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple – famous for its elephants inside the temple grounds! After getting blessed by one of the elephants here, we will reach the seafront.

Rest a little and enjoy your lunch at one of the sea – side restaurants.  After lunch we move on to Tanjore . On reaching Tanjore, check – in your hotel. Night stay will be in the hotel at Tanjore only.

Day 5 (by surface approx 65 kms / 2 hrs) : Tanjore – Trichy

A place for aesthetic Dravidian styles; it has got one of the finest temples around. So, soon after breakfast, we shall see Brihadishwara Temple . It’s a different kind of temple – in the morning hours its rocks turn into white and in the evening it has shades of red, yellow, orange and pink! And that’s the reason why we will be here – twice – in the morning and in the evening. Do not forget to capture the change of colours in your eyes once you are here!

After taking Darshan in this temple, we will take you to Royal Palace of Tanjore ! Take a good look at the paintings which are so different from the North Indian miniature paintings, see the relics and the rock – cut architecture .

After this we shall serve you lunch at one of the best restaurants around! Soon after lunch we will move towards Trichy which is an hour’s drive! On reaching Trichy, check in the hotel and overnight stay.

Day 6 : Trichy - Madurai (by surface approx 172 kms / 3 hrs)

The synonym for Trichy is Temples. Trichy is filled with temples. The 1st temple we will see here is Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple . One of the biggest temples of India, it has 49 separate shrines of Lord Vishnu. One needs to pass through 7 Gopurams to reach the main temple! After seeing this, the next temple is Rock Fort Temple . With over 400 stone – cut steps to reach the temple, it was a heaven for Pallavas and Pandayas.

On reaching here, move around the temple complex which gives the feeling of a small Fort in every sense! Lunch shall be served here. After this we will take you back to the hotel. Enjoy famous South Indian Filter Coffee and take rest. Next morning we shall set off to Madurai.

Day 7 : Madurai

On the seventh day of the tour, get up and enjoy a relaxed breakfast. After breakfast, get on the coach to reach Madurai – just 1 and 1/2hrs away. On reaching here, check in. After lunch we shall show you around Madurai – one of the oldest cities of Tamil Nadu . The first thing we will see here is Meenakshi Amman Temple .

The architecture of this Temple is often compared with that of Taj Mahal of North India ! A must see! After seeing the temple, we will take you to Tirumala Nayak Palace . It’s massive scale architecture and colourful design is worth the watch! In the evening take a stroll in the local market and shop for world famous south cotton and silken fabric . In the evening, be back in the hotel for night stay.

Day 08 : Madurai – Chennai

On the last day of the tour, get up for an early breakfast; as we shall proceed towards Chennai. A 7 hours drive; on reaching Chennai, we shall help you with your flight back home!
