18 Day Spain And Morocco Tour Small Group Andalucia & the Imperial Cities TOURCODE: ES4

Duration: 18 Days

Activity Level: 2

When To Go: May, Sep, Oct

Countries Visited: 2

Arrive In / Depart From: Madrid / Casablanca

Max Group Size: 18

Tour Style: Cultural

Price From:

Discover the country's true culture with the help of experienced local guides.

  • Small group sizes to help escape the beaten path.
  • All-inclusive with top-rated restaurants and hotels.

Separated only by the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain and Morocco tours venture to two countries worlds apart but intricately woven together through history.

While both are incredibly scenic, each has a unique flavour and perspective to present. Journey from Madrid to Casablanca to taste, smell, and experience the rich culture of both countries.

When the Moors invaded the Iberian peninsula in 711 AD, their presence would leave a lasting impression on the Spanish countryside until present day. In their wake they left a myriad of architectural wonders.

Our Spain and Morocco tours visit their masterpiece of the Alhambra in Granada, a palace complex set amongst the backdrop of the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains, the highest mountains of Spain.

We will wander the cobblestone alleyways of this medieval city, spy the Islamic decor and landscaped gardens found within this 13th century fortress with extraordinarily ornate 'lace in stone' details found within the palace. Without a doubt, this monument is without rival in Europe.

Beyond the Alhambra are many more impressive Moorish sites. In Cordoba, Spain and Morocco tours visit the Great Mosque of Cordoba, one of the oldest structures still standing which was built by the descendants of the exiled Umayyads.

The Alcazar Palace in Sevilla, is a 14th century palace set in the picture-perfect image of Andalucia, complete with orange groves and flower-filled patios.

It was here where King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella once resided and finally conquered the Moors, freeing their lands from 700 years of Moorish rule. The Catholic Monarchs would go on to create papal decree for the Spanish Empire that would colonize the Americas and claim them for Spain.

It is after Sevilla that the Spain and Morocco tours jump the continent, leaving behind Europe and venturing to Africa.

From the Strait of Gibraltar the first entrance into Morocco showcases a blend of North Africa, Spain, Portugal and France. But also a country drenched in exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, and friendly people.

It is by exploring the imperial cities of Morocco (Fez, Meknes and Rabat) that one begins to understand the nuances of this ancient land.

Wander the labyrinth of alleys and lanes lined with shops, mosques, homes and schools in the historic cities that were once the capitals.

The souks and squares in each town offer a chance to see locals wares such as carpets and pottery, two artistic pursuits for which the Moroccans are known for. The smell of mint tea never seems far away and the cities themselves seem to have changed little over the centuries.

Away from the imperial cities, it is the mountainous backbones of the High and Middle Atlas mountains that leave even intrepid travellers in awe. Folded mountains and high, windswept plateaux, vast forests of cork oak and cedar, and lakes and streams full of trout are the qualities that make up this Berber country, with sheep and goat-rearing as the main occupation.

Spain and Morocco tours offer the chance to stand on the shifting sands of Mergouza, sand dunes reaching heights of more than 45 metres (148 ft) with their colour shifting from pink to gold to red to white depending on the time of day.

From Madrid to Casablanca, Spain and Morocco tours are for the curious. For those who love a mix of metropolitan and traditional, historic and artistic, spicy yet sweet. For those looking to find UNESCO world heritage sites and memorable landscapes around every corner.

Prices below are per person , twin-sharing costs in Canadian Dollars (CAD) . Pricing does not include airfare to/from the tour and any applicable taxes. Day 1 Arrive in Madrid Today we arrive in Madrid and transfer to our hotel. The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the center of the Castillian plain, is a cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family. Overnight in Madrid. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Madrid & The Prado This morning we have a panoramic tour of broader Madrid, terminating at the Prado Museum for a guided tour. Our route to the museum likely takes us past Plaza Espana point and the Cervantes Monument. Originally opened to the public in 1819, the Prado houses all of the finest works collected by Spanish Royalty as well as Spanish paintings gathered from other sources over the past two centuries. The Prado is one of the most important repositories of art in the world, including a vast collection of Italian paintings. For the purposes of our visit, however, we will concentrate on works by Spanish masters -- Velasquez, Goya, Ribera, El Greco, Zurbaran, to name a few. After our tour, we'll head off on foot for an informal stroll up Gran Via and into the old quarter of Madrid. You'll then have free time for lunch and an afternoon of independent exploration. Your Tour Leader can help you plan your free time, with recommended shopping, other historical sites and galleries. You may want to visit the nearby Reina Sofia for the important modern art collection, including Picasso's masterpiece, "Guernica." Or visit the Museo Naval, one of the world's most important Navy Museums, to learn about the history of the Spanish Armada. Overnight in Madrid. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Madrid: Toledo Day Trip This morning we travel to Toledo, a city with a unique blend of Arab, Jewish, Christian, Roman, and Visigothic elements. Toledo sits on a rocky promontory isolated on three sides by a looping gorge of the Tagus River. The history of several different cultures is contained within this region, represented by the houses, synagogues, churches, and mosques. Our excursion includes a visit to the Cathedral, as well as the Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue, which shows the influence of the Granada Moors. We also see one of Toledo's most outstanding attractions, El Greco's masterpiece "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz" located inside the Church of Santo Tome. After lunch and some free time in Toledo, we return to Madrid. Overnight in Madrid. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Madrid - Cordoba: City Tour Today we travel by fast train to Cordoba (+/- 2 hours), crossing the Despenaperros Mountains and the border pass between Castile and Andalucia. During our time in Cordoba (a World Heritage City), we will gain a sense of the city's long and varied past and multicultural nature. Our tour starts at the Roman Bridge and the Calahorra Tower, an Arab defensive tower. Next we arrive at the Mezquita-Catedral, or Great Mosque of Cordoba, one of the oldest structures still standing from the time Muslims ruled Al-Andalus. The buildings on this site are as complex as the extraordinarily rich history they illustrate. Historians believe that there had first been a temple to the Roman god, Janus, on this site. The temple was converted into a church by invading Visigoths who seized Cordoba in 572. Next, the church was converted into a mosque and then completely rebuilt by the descendants of the exiled Umayyads -- the first Islamic dynasty who had originally ruled from their capital Damascus (in present-day Syria) from 661 until 750. We visit the Alcazar fortress, built by King Alfonso XI, and containing mosaics and sarcophagi. Finally we will have a stroll in the Jewish Quarter where the synagogue is located. Please note: Our official meal plan for today is "breakfast & dinner"; however, due to other variables, however (such as hotel location), your Tour Leader may choose to include lunch instead of dinner today. You will, of course, be advised in advance. Overnight in Cordoba. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Cordoba - Granada Our tour continues to Granada, set in the heart of Andalucia with the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains as a backdrop. Conquered by the Moors in AD 711, Granada blossomed into one of Europe's wealthiest and most refined cities. The legacy of Granada's rich history and heritage remain visible throughout the city centre with its cobblestone streets and lovely plazas. In 1992 Granada celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Christian re-conquest by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand, and Isabella. On arrival we visit the Royal Chapel, featuring tombs carved out of marble by the Tuscan sculptor Domenico Fancelli. As both Queen Isabel and King Fernando died before the Royal Chapel was finished, they were first buried in the Friary of San Francisco in the Alhambra. They were then later moved to the chapel once it had been completed, and buried alongside King Felipe and Queen Juana. Although their original idea was for all future Spanish Kings and Queens to be buried here, this did not happen as the monastery in El Escorial was used instead. Overnight in Granada. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Granada: The Alhambra The focus of our sightseeing today is Granada's main attraction, the Alhambra, a mighty fortress that houses an extraordinarily delicate and beautiful Moorish palace begun in the 13th century. This was the palace of the Nasrid Sultans, rulers of the last Spanish Moorish Kingdom. A fantasy of "lace in stone" surrounded by arabesque gardens and fountains, it affords superb views of the Old Quarter and Sacromonte, a mountain occupied by gypsy cave dwellers. In many ways, the Alhambra represents the Moorish concept of life itself -- something glorious to be ennobled by learning and enlivened by every kind of pleasure. We also visit the nearby Generalife Gardens. The balance of the day is at leisure for independent exploration, or you can join your Tour Leader on an informal stroll in the city's old Moorish quarter of the Albaicin. Overnight in Granada. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Granada - Reserva Tauro - Ronda: Town Tour We continue our tour (by road) to Ronda, a historic town located on a towering plateau in the mountains of Malaga Province. En route we visit Reserva Tauro, a 500 acre bull and horse breeding farm. Here we have the opportunity to get close to bulls and gain an understanding of the culture without attending a bull fight. Of course this cultural/historical practice is controversial, but the farm does a good job in presenting bull fighting in an even, objective way without in any way promoting or excusing it. In Ronda, we will walk around the old town where you will learn the origins of this ancient town where Romans, Arabs, and Christians left their traces. We visit the Mondragon Palace, built in a Mudejar style. Ronda is famous for its dramatic escarpments and views, and for the deep El Tajo gorge that carries the rio Guadalevin through its centre. We suggest a walk to the 18th century Puente Nuevo 'new' bridge, which straddles the 100m/328 ft chasm below, for its unparalleled views out over the Serrania de Ronda mountains. Overnight in Ronda. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Ronda - Pileta Caves - Olive Oil Tour - Sevilla Today we travel to Seville via a stop at the well-preserved rock paintings at the Pileta Caves (walking required on wet stone with no hand rails - speak to your leader for further guidance). The 25,000 year old Neolithic and Paleolithic drawings of black, ochre, and red are mostly just lines or patterns, but there are also horses, goats, cattle, and a rare giant fish, made from a mixture of clay and fat. This is not a well-developed tourist attraction; you must be steady on your feet and prepared for some slow walking. We then follow the route known as "the Route of the White Villages" for the singularity of the scenery. The villages -- Pueblos Blancos -- are a series of whitewashed towns and villages in the northern part of the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, mostly within the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. These charming settlements feature whitewashed houses festooned with pots of colourful flowers, mountain vistas, and traces of the Islamic and Christian past. For a bit of a break we stop briefly in the White Town of Grazalema, a white hill down nestled in Grazalema National Park, before continuing to a visit to one of the region's olive oil producers for a tour and lunch (included instead of dinner today). The region is renown for extra virgin olive oil, which transmits all the aroma, the flavour, and the essence of the olive groves of Zahara de la Sierra. The process is difficult and extreme, with steep slopes which require manual caretaking and harvesting; the reward is a very fruity, sweet, and gentle flavour partly due to high rainfall in the area. We will learn all about this process and have a chance to taste both the oil and the wine also made locally. Our visit will culminate with a lunch typical of the region with an assortment of tapas, local cheeses, fruits and other sweets (vegatarians are well-catered for). After a relaxing lunch, we proceed to Sevilla arriving late afternoon. Though we don't include dinner this evening, our hotel is well-placed and your Tour Leader will provide suggestions for your free time. Overnight in Sevilla. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 9 Sevilla: City Tour Sevilla, the fourth largest city in Spain, is the picture-perfect image of Andalucia, complete with restored Andalusian architecture, orange groves, flower-filled patios, and castanet-rattling Gypsies. While in Sevilla we visit the largest cathedral in Spain, built in a Gothic style with lovely stained glass windows, choir, and chapels. We visit the Giralda Tower, with its spectacular views of the city. We will also see the Moorish Alcazar Palace, a 14th century palace, the oldest royal residence in Europe and still in use. Later we will walk along the Guadalquivir riverbank and view historic monuments like the Maestranza Bullring, the Torre del Oro, and the Monument to the Tolerance by Eduardo Chillida. Overnight in Sevilla. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Sevilla - Tarifa, Spain - Tangier, Morocco Today we travel by road to the Spanish port of Tarifa from where we ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa and the Moroccan city of Tangier.* Tangier is a fascinating Moroccan city to visit. It has many of the things that travellers love -- a sense of exotic mystery, interesting history, beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches, and friendly people. Tangier is an interesting mix of north Africa, Spain, Portugal and France. Upon arrival we'll have a tour of this quickly growing and very colourful city. * In the event that the tour runs with a small group, it may be more expedient for us to fly from Seville to Morocco instead. This potential situation will become clearer closer to departure. Overnight in Tangier. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 11 Tangier - Casablanca Today we travel by road to Casablanca with a stop for lunch en route. Casablanca is believed to have been a Phoenician settlement and later a Berber town. It was conquered by the Almohads in 1188, and developed by Sutlan Abd el-Moumen as a port. In the 14th century the Portuguese established a settlement here on the site of the village of Anfa, but when it became a pirates' base in 1468, they destroyed it, repeating this act in 1515. The Portuguese reestablished themselves in the late 16th century, renaming the town Casa Blanca, staying until 1755, when an earthquake destroyed the settlement. Overnight in Casablanca. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Casablanca - Rabat - Fes This morning we visit the Hassan II Mosque, a glorious structure believed to be only second in size to Islam's most important site, Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The mosque was inaugurated in August 1993, the culmination of five years of intensive labour by over 30,000 workers and craftsmen. Non-Muslims may enter as part of a guided tour. From Casablanca we travel to Rabat, Morocco's third oldest Imperial City and modern capital. Among the sites in Rabat that we will visit are the the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum. Leaving Rabat we travel to Fes arriving in time for dinner. The historic city of Fes lies in the Oued Sebou basin, astride the traditional trade route from the Sahara to the Mediterranean and the path from Algeria and the Islamic heartland beyond. For centuries the dominant axis within Morocco was of Fes and Marrakech, two cities linked by their immense power and rivalry. Fes is still seen as the spiritual and cultural capital and holds an enduring fascination for visitors with one of the largest historic medinas full of monuments reflecting the different periods of Morocco's imperial past. Overnight in Fes. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Fes - Volubilis - Meknes - Fes This morning we visit the impressive site of Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco. Situated on the ledge of a long plateau, the dramatic site was once one of the Roman Empire's most remote outposts. Our local guide here will take you on tour of the site; we also allow free time for photographs. We also see the sacred town of Moulay Idriss (photo stop only). Moulay Idriss is a dramatic sight, houses and mosques piled up around two rock outcrops, with the 'zaouia,' or sanctuary, in between. We continue to Meknes, Morocco's youngest Imperial City. We feature the Bab El Mansour gate dating from 1752, complete with its Corinthian columns. The city was built by a massive army of slaves, both Moroccan and Christian, and the Sultan was in particular famed for his barbaric treatment of these people, supposedly interring them in the walls. The city contained within it all that was necessary for such a large population and military machine, with store houses, stables, armouries, exercise areas, gardens and ponds. We return to Fes. Overnight in Fes. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Fes: City Tour Today we will have a walking tour of Fes El Bali, the extraordinary medieval walled city. Once inside the gates of this great spectacle, you will see an entirely different view of life in Morocco. In contrast to the well-planned Ville Nouvelle, the old city is a labyrinth of alleys and lanes lined with shops, mosques, homes and schools. In 1980 UNESCO designated the medina a World Heritage Site. Our guide will take us to the medina to view the market shops, or suqs. Everything from food to clothing can be purchased. We will see the famous dying works with the brightly coloured cloth hanging to dry. A visit to the Royal Palace, several mosques, theological schools, and shops where we can see craftsmen tailoring their work will round out the day's tour. Today's walk is an amazing look into the life of the Moroccan city dweller where little has changed over the centuries. Overnight in Fes. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Fes - Erfoud We have a morning departure for the Middle Atlas, a region of folded mountains and high, windswept plateaux, vast forests of cork oak and cedar, and lakes and streams full of trout. This is Berber country and sheep and goat-rearing is the main occupation of these resilient, friendly people. We drive via the Berber villages of Imouzzer du Kandar; Ifrane, a fairy-tale town unlike any other in Morocco with white-walled French-style villas with steep red roofs and gables. As the altitude increases, we come to a bare, arid, sandy plateau with another range of mountains in the distance. We continue to Erfoud, an attractive town -- red and sandy, exuding desert ambiance. Overnight in Erfoud. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Rissani & Merzouga Dunes This morning we journey to the historic 8th century caravan town of Rissani to visit the Tafilalt Oasis. The first capital of the Tafilalt and the last stop on the caravan routes south, Rissani has a special place in Moroccan lore. The ruling Alaouite dynasty (from whom Morocco's current ruler, Mohammed VI, is a descendant) launched its bid for power here before triumphing finally in Fes and Marrakech. Today, a quarter of Rissani's population still inhabits a large 17th-century ksar in the center of town. Later this afternoon we drive by 4WD vehicle to Merzouga to witness sunset over the dunes. We have time to explore the dunes on foot, or by camel! This is a magical Saharan landscape, with huge drifting expanses of sand dunes reaching heights of more than 45 metres (148 ft). Their colour shifts from pink to gold to red to white depending on the time of day. Overnight at Merzouga. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Merzouga - Todra Gorge - Ouarzazate This morning we depart for the Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's most spectacular sights. It is a vast fault in the plateau separating the High Atlas from the Jbel Sarhro, two sheer cliffs over 300 metres (958 ft) high separated by a narrow corridor only 20 metres (66 ft) wide. Later we cross the southern slopes of the High Atlas before arriving at the captivating city of Ouarzazate. We stop en route in the heart of the Dades Valley at the oasis of Kelaa Mgouna. Overnight in Ouarzazate. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 18 Ouarzazate - Casablanca - Depart Today we fly back to Casablanca and connect with flights that generally leave in the evening. NOTE: The flight to Casa is included in your trip cost; if booking your own flights from Casablanca, land only passengers need to take into account the timing of the flight from Ouarzazate before booking their air from Casa. BON VOYAGE!! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner (hotels & local restaurants) daily. All sightseeing, transport and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving / departing on tour dates.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international air taxes (if applicable), excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring and fall when temperatures are mild. Showers are possible in spring and possible in late fall and winter. For a couple of years, starting from 2020, our spring dates are a little later in the season in order to avoid widespread closures or reduced hours for important sites during the holy month of Ramadan in Morocco. For these times, late May/early June, we will likely experience some heat in certain locations.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport throughout by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size'). Though we will have some full bus days (especially in Morocco) there are plenty of stops of interest. Train journeys are comfortable (2nd class). YOU MUST BE ABLE TO MANAGE YOUR OWN BAGS ON/OFF TRAINS AND IN TRAIN STATIONS. Please also note that, due to the narrow and winding nature of the streets and the size of our vehicle, we may need to park some distance away from our hotels in Granada, Córdoba, and Rhonda and walk our luggage a short distance. Our difficulty "Level 2" refers to the overall ambitious nature of our program, some long road journeys, some early starts, and time spent at remote locations (Morocco). Depending on season, you may also experience some heat at some locales. Much of our sightseeing is conducted on foot, with walking tours of towns & cities, medinas, archaeological sites, and museums. You must be prepared to be on your feet for several hours at a time, walking at a leisurely pace. We will also have short walks to dinner. All hotels in Spain have elevators; however, a couple of our smaller 3-4 story properties in Morocco (ie Essaouira) may not. You will also encounter stairs quite frequently during our sightseeing visits.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Accommodation Well-located, air- conditioned, mid-range hotels (3-4 star) throughout. All hotels have en suite bath, though some may have shower only. Porter service is usually available is Morocco (see 'inclusions'), not so likely in Iberia-you should be independent with your luggage. Single rooms are limited and likely smaller than twins.

Staff and Support Tour Leader throughout, driver, local step-on guides in various locales.

Group Size Maximum 18 plus Tour Leader

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, lisbon – the iconic tramcar and an ebullient capital city.

Lisbon will delight you with its contrasts, making it an ideal introduction to this 17-day luxury tour. Every neighborhood is different and there’s a commitment to idiosyncrasy that you’ll later find all over Iberia and Morocco. After your private driver escorts you from the airport to your hotel the afternoon will be at your leisure. Take a stroll around the grand district of Baixa, perhaps heading out to the riverside promenade or one of the districts on a hill. In the late afternoon, you will enjoy a timeless journey through the city as you ride the number 28 tramcar that connects the diverse central neighborhoods. This vintage means of travel will create a window onto the city for you. The evening will be at your leisure and Lisbon has an outstanding culinary reputation.

What's Included:

Lisbon – Highlights of Lisbon Private Tour and Fado Performance

On your first full day in Lisbon, you will discover that Portugal’s capital is the home of legends, where monuments to explorers stand on the riverfront and a unique architectural style stands out from the rest of Europe. The grandest monuments are in the region of Belem where Manueline style added glitz and glamor to the 15th and 16th centuries. Baixa was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, a complementary show of grandeur. Then there’s Alfama, the old quarter for seamen, and Bairro Alto, the slum turned 21st-century creative hub. You will explore all this on a full-day private Lisbon tour, before an evening in one of Alfama’s traditional taverns, where a classic Fado performance reveals the soulful music of the past.

Seville – The Historic Soul of Andalusia

The next morning you will take a short flight south where the atmosphere will change. You will be in another lively city, where the old quarters are draped in the ebullience of today. There’s a different soul here, one that lives life in the present even if one of Europe’s oldest historic centers provides the setting. After you touch down and settle in, the best way to initially explore will be to do so without a map. Moorish architecture enlivens the streets, mingling with murals and al fresco terraces. Cathedral spires stand over the streets of cobblestone and allure. Mazy walkways open out onto a harbor where Columbus set sail and the history of Andalusia can be found on every corner. Today you will relax, indulge, and let your footsteps roam to the southern beat.

Seville – A City of Many Sides and a Night of Flamenco

After yesterday’s open discovery you will be privately guided today as you take a tour through the monuments that elevate Seville further. You will discover Roman remnants followed by Moorish remains, such as the artistry of buildings like Casa de Pilatos. Then, take a walk through Santa Cruz, discover one of Europe’s greatest cathedrals, gaze up at the Golden Tower and get to know Seville with an insider. There will be something special for the evening, a performance of Andalusian flamenco in the home of flamenco. A soulful guitar finds the space between traditional notes, feet stamp, and hands clap to control the rhythm, and an enchanting voice improvises a story that moves through you with every word.

Rabat – Following the Iconic Barbary Coast

The next day you will begin your journey from Seville to Rabat, taking time to enjoy sherry in Jerez, the home of the fruity and fragrant sweet wine. Then cross the Strait of Gibraltar by ferry as you gaze back at the cliffs of Iberia and forward to the dusty iconicity of Africa. You will be greeted by a private driver at the ferry port and begin to trace a route along the Barbary Coast, passing cute villages and stunning stretches of untouched coast. While you will start your trip early in the morning, the Moroccan portion of the trip will be very flexible and you can stop off at various points on the route, depending on your interests. When you arrive in Morocco’s old capital in the late afternoon, you will be surprised at how calm and quaint the city is.

Marrakesh – Sublime Monuments of the Moroccan Cities

In the morning, you will notice how Medieval battlements mark the cityscape in Rabat, odes to a time of quarrel and conflict. They juxtapose with a royal palace that looks completely different to the one you saw in Lisbon. Travel beneath a 12th-century gate into the Kasbah of Oudayas, where palm trees provide shocks of green amid the sandstone architecture. Admire Hassan Tower and a series of Roman relics before the short drive south to Casablanca. Here you will have lunch at Rick’s Cafe Casablanca, the restaurant made famous by Humphrey Bogart in the movie Casablanca. After lunch, you will visit Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest mosques and a fabulous impression of Islamic architecture as the silence and design is extraordinary. Casablanca is a modern city and from here you will continue to Marrakesh, where the tradition is everywhere you look in the old town.

Marrakesh – Immersed in the Seductive Back-Lanes

Today you will discover that Old Marrakesh is a maze, where even the most detailed maps can’t do justice to the abundance of back-lanes and alleyways. It will be a baffling experience to be guided by your five senses as you hear market traders calling, smell spicy fragrances floating, and experience the local life continuing. You can turn a corner and stumble upon a lively street. Or you can turn a different corner to find tranquility and an exquisite historical icon such as like Badia Palace or the Saadian Tombs. Spend a whole day being guided around, with the exact itinerary dependent on your interests. The evening will be at your leisure to explore vibrant neighborhoods, such as Djemaa El-Fna, which has been a popular hangout place for centuries. This a central square is where musicians and storytellers ply their trade, alongside a marketplace of food and vivacity.

Ouarzazate – Across the Mountains to the Immortalized Movie Sets

The following day, you will leave the city behind you to travel across the epic landscapes of Morocco. Snow clings to summits in the High Atlas, a mountain chain that casts a great scar between the coast and desert. As you descend from the mountain pass, you will arrive in Ouarzazate, a city of movie studios that are surrounded by filming locations. Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator were all filmed in this area, along with most Hollywood movies based in the Middle East or Rome. While the studios showcase one perspective of the region, Ouarzazate is also a city of tradition that sees relatively few tourists. Spending a night on the main plaza will be a great way to enjoy the local culture and lifestyle.

Erfoud – Into the Sahara and the Dunes

In the morning, a zigzag of roads will take you into the Dades Valley, where the ochre of the rock is punctuated by an oasis of villages. Plantations of olives and dates and figs stand beneath the narrowing valley walls. This is all just an introduction to the next natural wonder, Todra Gorge. You will continue deeper into the desert until the camels are more numerous than the vehicles and the sand dunes rise evocatively beyond the horizon. You have a choice tonight. Either drive out into the sand dunes by four-wheel drive, cruising to a towering point that’s surrounded by silence, before an evening at a hotel that gazes onto the dunes. Or ride by camel to a small camp that’s hidden in the dunes, for a night beneath the stars and insight into Berber tradition.

Fez – The World’s Largest Walled City

Admire the sand dunes as they change color at sunrise, the shadows turning to orange and yellow as the day starts in earnest. You will travel northwest, back through the Atlas Mountains to the world’s largest walled city. Along the way, you stop at spectacular gorges, an old French settlement, and oasis villages that are perfect for a refreshing cup of sweet mint tea. Berber King Idris made Fez the country’s capital in the eighth century and it continues to be a city of art and folklore. It’s a confusing place, a maze behind walls where it’s impossible not to get lost. Your guide will provide an orientation before leading you to a restaurant terrace for dinner amid the city’s soul.

Tangier – Legendary Tales of Culture and Tradition

This morning you will stand on a viewpoint and marvel at the scale of the city and the endless details such as the roofs that stretch across the valley. Marvel at the Blue Gate that guards the city, then enter beneath the adorned facade. Travel through the ancient souks, from the tanners to the jewelers to the antique stores and the spices. Explore the old Jewish quarter of Mellah and be guided into the heart of the Medina, where the sounds and smells are as evocative as the sights. You’ll spend most of the day in Fez before you are transferred north to Tangier, a city immortalized by the travel writers of the early 20th century. Perched on the coast, it will be a peaceful place to discover before tomorrow’s ferry ride to Spain.

Day  12 - 13

Costa Del Sol – Beach Relaxation in the South of Spain

After tirelessly exploring Portugal and Morocco, there will be a brief change of tempo. Once you cross the Strait of Gibraltar you will settle into a quiet beach village on Spain’s southern coast, where the sounds of the surf keep you company. There isn’t much to do here and the village has been chosen for its quietude. You will be grateful for the opportunity to recharge your batteries and reflect on what you’ve experienced so far. Enjoy lazy mornings, languid afternoons, and easy evenings on a restaurant terrace. You’ll be tucked away on a beautiful part of the Mediterranean coastline and there are some excellent self-guided coastal hikes if you are interested.

Granada – The Fabulous Legacy of the Moors

Recharged and revitalized you will continue the adventure to cross a landscape that’s filled with Moorish influence. Iconic white villages (Pueblos Blancos) dot the hills and the design of the Mudejars gives every settlement an old-world beauty. Today’s destination will be Granada, home to one of the world’s greatest historical buildings, the Alhambra. It’s a fantasy land of Arabesque detail, so intricate it appears to be made of lace rather than stone. This city was the last stronghold of the Moors and there are countless other memoirs to their story, from fountains to palaces to the vernacular wonder of the past.  As the Alhambra is illuminated on the hill, the evenings in Granada will be very special, with such a wonderful impression of the past surrounding you at all times.

Madrid – Following the El Greco Trail and Tapas in the Capital

Today you will drive north across La Mancha, the landscape of open plains immortalized by Don Quixote. Your first destination will be Toledo, an old Moorish bridge that leads you into a city of medieval enchantment. Cathedral bells chime, a synagogue stands next to the remains of a mosque, and the cobbled roads lead you to some of Spain’s finest architecture. You’ll take the El Greco trail to follow in the footsteps of Spain’s pre-eminent Golden Age artist and admire his most important works, like the mural at the Church of Santo Tome. Then continue onward to Madrid where the best introduction to the city will be a different kind of trail, a tapas tour. It will not just be an insight into the flavors but an introduction to the ambiance of a capital city that is far more tranquil than its size suggests.

Madrid – Wonders of the Spanish Capital

On your last full day in Spain, you will discover the numerous wonders of Madrid. Marvel at the iconic art pieces in the Prado, one of the world’s great art galleries. Take a stroll through the lavish decoration of El Escorial, a World Heritage Site that shows the relationship between royalty and religion. Admire the ancient rooms in the Royal Palace then gaze up at the statue of Cervantes. Relax in a city square, sipping on wine or coffee as you watch the world go by. Then take a stroll through vibrant central neighborhoods that are laced in history. There’s a high degree of flexibility for you to experience as much of Madrid as you can. The guide can tailor a route to your interests and you will never be far from a grand plaza to rest your legs.

Madrid – Departure

Spend the day in Madrid, a chance to visit attractions you missed yesterday, or to simply sit back on a terrace and recount the last 17 days. You’ll be transferred to the international airport in plenty of time for your departing flight.

Detailed Description

So many legendary tales emanate from three countries around the Mediterranean. In Spain, the Moors were a pre-medieval civilization that forever shaped design and architecture. In Morocco, the Berbers created a lifestyle that is unchanged to this day around the Saharan sand dunes and rugged Atlas Mountains. There are tales of discovery, like Vasco de Gama in Lisbon and Columbus in Seville. Royal legacies dot each country, with uniquely styled palaces across Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. Walled cities are on a baffling scale while medieval remnants feel untouched by time. And the energy of the legendary tales surrounds you, like seductive souks, flamenco performances, and elegiac fado.

As you explore these three countries you will find that every legendary tale is different. Every day and each destination will create a new experience, yet each experience is bound together by soul. These are countries and destinations that have always preserved the unique as their niche cultures are as important now as they were in the eighth century. Each country and each destination has a rhythm, something you will feel with every footstep across the cobbles. Over the course of your journey, you will also start to appreciate the soul, the inexpressible element that perforates everything in this part of the world.

Your route has been handcrafted to celebrate a wide range of highlights, culturally and historically, as well as landscapes and natural wonders. You will start in Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, which offers a vibrant introduction to Iberia. Then Seville will follow, another city packed full of energy and effervescent history. You will cross the Strait of Gibraltar and follow the Barbary Coast to Rabat to experience the artistic pleasures and Moroccan city culture of Casablanca and Marrakesh, two destinations that reveal so much more than famous postcard photos.

Continue on to explore surreal Moroccan landscapes as you travel across the Atlas Mountains to Ouarzazate, a legendary movie-set destination. Cross the gorges to the sand dunes and a night gazing in the Sahara. Then travel northwest through the oases to Fez, the world’s largest walled city and a capital of Moroccan culture for more than a millennia. After a night in Tangier, you will return to Spain’s southern region, Andalusia for quiet time on the beach before you travel on to Granada, Toledo, and Madrid. On the last few days, you will discover mesmeric historical cities, each with its own art, food and style.

Physical Activity Level

This is a very high physical activity-level tour. You can expect vigorous activity throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Two 1-night stays
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Some transportation by ferry and plane
  • Daily bus time varies and can be lengthy

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 3-5 miles per day over varying terrain - this includes crowded city streets, cobblestones, uneven stairs, and steep hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • Access to Alhambra requires travelers to walk uphill, including many stairs with uneven steps
  • While in Morocco, certain areas of the guided sightseeings will be very crowded and it is imperative that each individual maintains pace with the group so they do not get separated.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour

Climate Considerations

  • In the summer months (June-September), travelers can expect low to mid-80sF in Portugal, and heatwaves with temperatures consistently above 90F in Spain and Morocco.

  • A ferry from Tarifa to Tangier and a flight from Marrakech to Madrid are included in the price of your tour (the tour extension also includes a train ride from Madrid to Barcelona).
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • European train stations typically operate similarly to airports where security measures, such as baggage and body scanners, are common. Platforms are often spread out across large distances and require travelers to manage their luggage on escalators or stairs. Porterage services are not offered on train transfers and luggage storage on trains is extremely limited. Please keep in mind that trains may only be stopping at the stations for a few minutes; speed with loading and unloading may be imperative.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which may include train connections, ferries, or flights.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage or exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.

  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels, airports, trains, and ferries.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and often requires travelers to lift their suitcases onto storage racks, sometimes above the seats.
  • Travelers need to be prepared to manage their own luggage during ferry transfers. This includes carrying your luggage up/down the boarding ramp, lifting luggage onto racks, and managing crowded spaces with other people and motor vehicles.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis). Furthermore, in Morocco, modest dress is preferred for women in general; female travelers often feel more comfortable with shoulders and bare knees covered at all times.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel to strike the balance of comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Accommodations are typically three to four star hotels.
  • All accommodations include a private bathroom.
  • Most rooms will include a safe for valuables.

  • Elevators in hotels are not guaranteed.
  • Some hotels on this tour require travelers to walk with their luggage a few blocks as buses cannot drop travelers off right out front.

  • Portugal, Spain, and Morocco operate on the European standard 220-240 volts and use Types C or E plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We cannot guarantee that your hotel accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with the hotel once they are confirmed about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.

  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .

  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • While in Morocco, we recommend drinking bottled water and refraining from consuming tap water, even when brushing teeth. Also, avoid eating fresh fruits and vegetables unless they are cooked or washed in clean water and peeled.
  • Please note that certain medication, both over the counter and prescription, are banned in some foreign countries. The importation of these drugs can carry severe consequences. Please consult your physician 4 weeks prior to departure to ensure that any drugs you may want to bring with you are legal in the countries you visit.

  • This tour includes eight dinners. Included meals may be plated set menus, buffet or family style depending on the location. Dinners include one glass of beer, wine, or soft drink and water, coffee and tea. Alcoholic drinks will not be included while in Morocco.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • Portuguese food is fresh, hearty, and delicious. Try seafood stew cooked in a cataplana, a shell-shaped copper pan, or the national dish, bacalhau (salted cod). A couvert, or simple plate of bread, butter, and olives, is often served when you sit down to a meal—while it is free in many restaurants, some will add a charge to your bill for it.
  • In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring a Spanish staple like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates called tapas any time of day.
  • Cuisine in Spain's southern Andalusia region is heavily influenced by surrounding countries, and has many Arabic elements. Kebabs are popular, and desserts are often prepared with almonds, honey, and cinnamon. Be sure to try Serrano ham, which is considered a regional delicacy, as well as the famous chilled soup known as gazpacho.
  • Catalan cuisine, which can be found in Barcelona on the tour extension, is markedly different from food in other parts of Spain. Nearly every restaurant will offer pa amb tomàquet—toasted bread with tomato and olive oil. Fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes, cheeses, and locally grown vegetables, such as wild mushrooms, are culinary mainstays.
  • Moroccan cuisine consists of a unique blend of spices, such as saffron, turmeric, cinnamon, and cumin. Popular dishes include delicately spiced stews of meat, most often cooked with vegetables or fruit in a conical clay pot known as a tagine. These dishes are often added to couscous.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide, and the equivalent of $5USD per person per day for the Moroccan Tour Director.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro in Portugal and Spain as well as the Moroccan dirham in Morocco.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency. This means North American banks cannot exchange for it and you can only obtain it once you arrive in Morocco.
  • You can exchange your dollars for dirhams at a Bureau de Change in the airport, at a bank, and in most hotels.
  • Keep your receipt after exchanging your money as you may need it to exchange your dirhams back to dollars upon departure. You can do this at the airport for a good rate.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • While in Morocco, an additional tour director will join your group.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.

  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Portugal and Morocco are on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and five hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).

That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. spain morocco tour

¡Bienvenidos a Espana! A truly cosmopolitan city, Madrid is the gateway to Spain’s arts and culture, tantalising cuisine and diverse architecture.

Upon arrival at Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), take your private transfer to your hotel for check-in, then spend the day at your leisure exploring Spain’s thriving capital. Stroll the elegant boulevards and manicured parks, then live the Spanish life and step into one of the vibrant bars for ‘la hora del vermut’ or Vermouth Hour.

This evening, meet your tour director and fellow travellers at your hotel for a briefing on the exciting adventure come.

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel, then set out for a morning tour of this thriving city. From the busy squares of Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa to the storied streets of Barrio de Moreria and the Habsburg neighbourhood and the neoclassical Fountain of Neptune, discover the living history of this bustling metropolis with the direction of your expert local guide.

After a morning of cultural immersion, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at your own pace. This evening, come together as a group for a welcome dinner at a local tapas restaurant and sample the fragrant flavours and piquant spices of Spanish cuisine.

Bid farewell to magical Madrid as you travel to the university town of Salamanca. Tucked away among rolling hills, this medieval town is home to one of the oldest operating universities in the world.

With free time to explore, you can immerse yourself in its architectural and artistic wealth, from the stained-glass atrium of the Casa Lis art museum to the shell-covered walls of Casa de las Conchas.

Rise, shine and board your private luxury coach as you cross the border to picturesque Portugal. Stop first at serene Pinhao on the banks of the Douro River, where you’ll visit the local vineyards and centenary cellars that have earned Pinhao its place in the wine world. Explore the complex local blends on a special tasting experience and relish a delicious lunch made with local produce.

Continue to Porto, one of Europe’s oldest towns, and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Opt to stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage-listed streets, visit the impressive Casa da Música concert hall or sample a hearty francesinha (toasted sandwich) – a Porto specialty.

Wake for a day of discovery and uncover Porto on a guided tour. Admire the fine craftsmanship of Porto Cathedral, the elaborate Stock Exchange Palace and the meticulous interior of Igreja de Santa Clara church.

Later, cruise down the peaceful waters of the Douro River. Watch as the twin cities of Porto and Gaia pass by on opposite banks, and gaze in awe at Porto’s countless stunning bridges.

Back on land, spend your evening freely, exploring the romantic streets and maybe choosing to try a glass of the city’s famous port wine.

Optional activities:

  • Guimaraes excursion (surcharges apply).

Be sure to fuel up at breakfast before embarking on the day’s adventure. Your first stop is Aveiro, known as the ‘Portuguese Venice’. See just why the city has earned this reputation as you cruise along the beautiful canals aboard a moliceiro boat, named for the algae they once harvested along the Ria de Aveiro.

Spend some time wandering at your leisure, exploring the old Beira Mar neighbourhood and the Mercado do Peixe – Aveiro’s bustling fish market.

Travel onward to Coimbra, the birthplace of fado – a popular style of traditional Portuguese music. With your abundant free time, you may choose to explore the historic streets climbing up from the banks of the Rio Mondego. Another famed university town, Coimbra’s buildings date back to the 12th century, including the Romanesque wonder of Se Velha Cathedral.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then set your sights on the idyllic towns of the Portuguese countryside. Start your day in historic Tomar, former seat of the Order of the Knights Templar, where you can see the Convent of Christ. This Gothic and Manueline masterpiece was once a 12th-century Templar stronghold and took over five centuries to complete.

Continue to the picturesque fishing town of Nazare, famed for its world-class surfing. Spend your free time appreciating the rolling Atlantic at North Beach, where thrill-seekers try their luck among gargantuan waves averaging 15 metres high.

Rounding out the day is peaceful Obidos. Wander freely through this medieval town and marvel at the superbly preserved castle and 16th-century aqueduct.

Later, arrive in the vibrant city of Lisbon, where you can get a taste of its beloved architecture, delicious seafood and thriving nightlife.

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the streets of Lisbon on a morning sightseeing tour. Traverse the main squares and avenues, passing Belem Tower and the serene Jeronimos Monastery, as well as the imposing Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoverers) on the northern bank of the Tagus River and the grand Marquis of Pombal Square.

The rest of the afternoon will be free to wander through the city streets or perhaps visit the Alfama Quarter, the oldest and most historical part of Portugal's capital.

This evening, enjoy a traditional Portuguese dinner and fado performance at one of the oldest venues in the city.

Tuck into breakfast before saying goodbye to Portugal as you travel by private coach across the border to Merida. Capital of the western Spanish region of Extremadura, Merida’s famed Roman ruins date back to the 1st century BCE.

Spend time exploring the historic remains of this ancient colony and stand at the centre of the miraculously preserved Roman Theatre.

Continue onward to Seville – the vibrant Andalusian capital - to enjoy the evening at your leisure. Walk the city’s storied streets and soak up extraordinary architecture and the vibrant Spanish soul.

Optional Activity:

  • Las Setas de Sevilla evening city tour (surcharges apply).

Let your expert guide unlock the wonders of romantic Seville as you navigate the maze of narrow, tree-lined streets and blooming courtyards of Santa Cruz – the city’s picture-perfect Jewish Quarter. Lose yourself in the complex blend of Christian and Moorish architecture, epitomised by the Mudejar style of the grand palace of Real Alcazar.

Spend your afternoon meandering through the bright barrio or opt to join a trip to the southern city of Jerez de la Frontera. Built around an 11th-century Moorish fortress, this sun-kissed spot is known globally as the namesake of sherry wine or ‘jerez’ as well as its centuries-old equestrian tradition (surcharges apply).

  • Jerez de la Frontera excursion with sherry tasting (surcharges apply).

Fill up with a buffet breakfast at your hotel, then hit the road on your way to Cordoba. Founded in the 2nd century BCE, this historically Roman city has a fascinating history of diverse influences converging in a cosmopolitan blend of architecture and culture.

Visit the wonderfully unique Mezquita – a captivating mosque-turned-cathedral that stands as testament to the compounding innovations of Islamic and Christian architects dating back to the 8th century. Over the next millennium, the complex would grow and evolve in unexpected ways, tied to the particular cultural exchange of Spain’s southern reaches. The enormous mosque is an intricately constructed masterpiece of striped arches and wide halls, while the 16th-century cathedral at its heart tells the story of a changing Spain.

Depart for a scenic journey through Spanish olive groves, learning how olive oil is produced from the olive treem then check in to your hotel in Granada upon arrival. In the evening, convene with your fellow adventurers for an unforgettable traditional flamenco show over a delicious Spanish dinner.

Prepare for the day with a hearty breakfast, then make your way to the jaw-dropping Alhambra. This expansive hilltop fortress complex remains one of the most renowned examples of Islamic architecture in the world. Listen as your guide highlights the intricately carved Moorish architecture, punctuated by signs of the Spanish Renaissance in its layered distillation of a history shrouded in mystery.

Spend your afternoon at leisure, or choose to join an optional walking tour through the Albaicin district and chart the transition of Moorish design to Christian construction as you marvel at the beautiful mosques, churches and artisan shops and visit a celebrated pastry and teashop (surcharges apply).

  • Albaicin neighbourhood walk (surcharges apply).

Depart glorious Granada and travel back to Madrid, stopping along the way at the ‘Imperial City’ of Toledo. Spectacularly poised overlooking the Rio Tajo, Toledo’s reputation as the ‘city of three cultures’ dates back to the Middle Ages. Today, let your guide dig up the past on a tour of the historic narrow streets, where you can spot countless mosques, Gothic cathedrals and Sephardic synagogues.

Continue to Madrid and check in at your hotel, then spend an evening of cultural exchange with your group over another sumptuous Spanish meal.

Rise and shine for a new day and a new destination! Take your private transfer to Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) for a flight to beautiful Casablanca, Morocco. Famed for its place in Hollywood movie history, Casablanca’s vibrant mix of cultural influences span from traditional Moorish to French colonial, as seen in its intricate architecture.

Once you’ve transferred to your hotel, enjoy the afternoon as you please, before meeting up for a hearty dinner at your hotel.

A full day of wonderous sights awaits, starting with a guided city tour through the bustling streets of Casablanca. Visit Anfa Boulevard and the historic United Nations Square, then witness the breathtaking Hassan II Mosque – one of the largest mosques in the world. Partially suspended above the sea and fitted with an enormous retractable roof that opens to beaming sunlight on special days of worship, this feat of architecture – with its hand-carved stone and detailed marble floor – pays tribute to the former King of Morocco in painstaking detail.

Farewell Casablanca and set out for Fes, stopping along the way in Rabat – capital of Morocco with Berber fortifications dating back to the 12th century. See the Royal Palace and the regal Mausoleum of Mohammed V, then peer up at the commanding minaret of Hassan Tower.

Continue on your way until you reach the sprawling city of Fes. Round out your day with a mouthwatering Moorish welcome dinner.

This morning, step back in time as you venture through Fes’ medieval Medina. A glass of mint tea or a handful of sweet Moroccan dates might be the fuel you need as you admire the varied sizes and designs of the Seven Gates of the Royal Palace, the ornate gate of Bab Bou Jeloud and the historic Jewish Quarter.

Spend the afternoon at your leisure. Gaze upon mesmerising mosaic fountains and breathe in alluring spices as you pass aromatic food stands offering bowls of earthy harira soups and lamb sausages stuffed with paprika.

Return to your hotel for dinner and a restful evening.

Today, travel beyond the walls of Fes and reach Meknes – known as the ‘Versailles of Morocco’. Admire the great gate of Bab el Mansour and gaze upon the colourful tiles of the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.

Continue to the Roman ruins of Volubilis – an archaeological site in the Jebel Zerhoun plains. Walk through the historic fortifications, known for their lovely bloom of delicate wildflowers in the summer.

Return to Fes for a well-earned meal at your hotel.

Depart Fes and travel through the Middle Atlas mountains to Erfoud, where you’ll transfer to your 4WD transport and head to your desert escape in Merzouga. Scale the magnificent rose-gold waves of sand as they sweep up from the rocky plains at the fringes of the Sahara.

Check into your luxury desert camp, then settle in for a traditional Berber meal by the campfire. Tilt your head back and drink in the vast tapestry of dazzling stars above that cloak the sky like diamonds.

Watch the sunrise over the golden sands and savour a refreshing breakfast, then set off through glorious Todra Gorge. Winding along the babbling river, this jaw-dropping road carves a path through a 300-metre-deep break in the limestone cliff walls.

Drive on through the Valley of Roses and pass Kelaat M’Gouna, where thousands of Berbers travel for the annual Rose Festival. This springtime celebration honours the fragrant harvest and production of treasured rose water with parades and dancing.

Follow the dramatic ‘Road of 1000 Kasbahs’ and wind your way past mud-brick forts, spotting historic kasbahs and fortified villages in the resonant silence of the mountains. Continue to Ouarzazate and check in at your hotel for the evening.

Wake and seize the day with a visit to magnificent Kasbah Taourirt – a richly decorated palace that stood as the former residence of the Pasha of Marrakech.

Unearth almost a thousand years of history as you travel to the fortified ksar of Ait Benhaddou. Beyond its striking beauty and uniquely Moroccan clay architecture, this town built into a hill is a favourite location for Hollywood filmmakers, playing host to epic productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Later, venture through the High Atlas mountain range and on to Marrakech.

Your day begins with a guided tour of colourful Marrakech. Make your way to Koutoubia Mosque and its decorative minaret – considered one of the world’s greatest minarets and 'sister' to the Giralda in Seville.

Visit the royal necropolis of the Saadian Tombs, then head to the famed Jemaa el-Fnaa – the main square of Marrakech. Perpetually abuzz with activity, this lively square is known for its excellent people-watching and eye-catching street performers.

Mark your last Moroccan night with a bountiful farewell dinner.

Even the best adventures must come to an end. Enjoy one last breakfast at your hotel, then take your private transfer to Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) where your whirlwind journey concludes.

  • After completing your booking, your tour cost may be subject to additional surcharges due to factors beyond the control of Luxury Escapes.
  • Where the cost of delivering your selected tour materially increases between the time of purchase and delivery, we reserve the right to increase the balance due. A material increase will be considered one in excess of 10% of the package price.

We reserve the right to modify prices for marketing and commercial reasons. Please note that full terms and conditions apply. Refer to website’s terms and conditions.

Pre- & Post-Tour Accommodation Pre- and post-tour accommodation can be booked to extend your stay before or after your tour by contacting our Tours Concierge Team at [email protected] .

Luxury Escapes uses a range of accommodation partners. For pre- and post-tour accommodation options where we can offer the same hotel as the start and end of your tour, your pre- and post-tour accommodation will be booked independent of your tour. If the hotel for your tour changes, this will be independent of your pre- or post-tour accommodation booking. In this instance, change fees may apply on your pre- or post-tour accommodation, if you choose to change; change fees can be found in your ‘My Escapes.’

For pre- and post-tour accommodation bookings, you may be required to check out of your room and check in again on the first or last day of your tour. You will need to confirm these details directly with hotel.

Please contact the Tours Concierge Team at [email protected] for further information.

  • We work with exceptional local tour providers to present uniquely crafted packages that encompass sightseeing tours and excursions. Our tour provider partners are dedicated to making every effort to accommodate specific requirements. However, it should be noted that the extent to which they can address mobility and accessibility needs may vary, depending on the nature of the sightseeing tour and activities involved. Please contact [email protected] so we can advise whether your specific needs can be accommodated.

  • Passport details are required for all bookings. In some cases, a digital copy of your passport may be requested by Luxury Escapes to book certain elements of your trip.
  • If a photo of your passport is requested, failure to provide valid photo ID will result in your booking being cancelled and all monies paid remaining non-refundable. When requested, a digital copy of your passport must be provided for each guest at least 90 days prior to your tour departure.
  • Should you require any assistance with your Traveller Details, please contact our Tours Concierge Team at [email protected] .
