How much is spirit elite status worth, how to become a free spirit elite flyer, is spirit elite status worth it.

Fans of Spirit Airlines are likely to love a deal. And if you fly frequently, the discounts add up when you're a member of its frequent flyer program Free Spirit.

Free Spirit is free to join. When you do, you'll be able to accrue points that you can later spend on flights and other in-flight purchases. Once you fly often enough, you advance to higher membership levels, such as Free Spirit Silver or Gold. From there, the perks start piling on — you get more freebies and earn points faster.

Just remember that Free Spirit points expire if you don't maintain account activity (earning or redeeming points) within 12 months. Though, they don't expire if you maintain an open Free Spirit Credit Card account .​

Free Spirit elite status comes in three levels — Free Spirit, Free Spirit Silver and Free Spirit Gold — and each tier offers a slew of useful benefits.

Basic-level Free Spirit members earn 6 points per dollar spent on fares and 12 points per dollar on Á La Smarte options like seat selection and checked bags. Silver and Gold level elites earn more while enjoying some other attractive perks.

That's a massive list of benefits, and most of the best Spirit elite status benefits get you out of otherwise-aggravating fees.

One of the most standout benefits is the ability to get out of one of Spirit's most bizarre fees: a redemption fee. This Spirit policy is especially brutal to procrastinators or those who like to book travel last-minute. Award flights booked within 28 days of departure require a $50 redemption fee. However, with Silver or Gold elite status, that award redemption fee is waived.

Other standout benefits of Free Spirit Silver elite include faster security screenings and early boarding, available same-day standby, the ability to choose a free seat during check-in, exit row seat assignment 180 minutes before departure and access to a dedicated guest care line. The Points Pool feature allows the elite member to create a pool of points that can be shared with up to eight friends or family members.

Free Spirit Gold elite members benefit from all the perks of Silver as well as Free Flight Flex, which allows passengers to modify their booking once up to 24 hours before their flight. They also have perks like one free carry-on and one free checked bag, free seat selection during booking, free in-flight snacks and beverages and exit row seat assignment at booking.

In NerdWallet’s annual analysis of the best airline elite status programs , we sought to determine how much value the major U.S. airline loyalty programs deliver to flyers. Here's how Spirit's Free Spirit program did.

These estimates make several assumptions about your travel choices, such as how often you fly with Spirit and how often you take advantage of its elite status benefits. Having status without flying, for example, isn't really "worth" anything at all.

You achieve elite status by spending money with Spirit Airlines. For every dollar you spend on fares and Á La Smarte options, you’ll earn 1 Status Qualifying Point (SQP). Accumulate 2,000 SQPs in a year and you’ll attain Free Spirit Silver status. Hit 5,000 SQPs in a year and you’ll achieve Free Spirit Gold. You have one calendar year to achieve status, then the whole process resets.

If you don’t think you can spend that much on Spirit’s budget fares, you can earn more SQPs with an eligible Free Spirit credit card at a rate of 1 SQP for every $10 you spend.

Because the new program will pay points based on the price of your fare instead of distance traveled, cheaper fares will take longer to add up to status.

Once you achieve status, you’ll enjoy the benefits for the rest of the calendar year in which you earned it plus the entire following year. So if you earned Silver status in September of 2023, you’ll have access to the benefits until the end of 2024.

For those who love Spirit’s low fares and fly the airline often, its Free Spirit elite status program offers a way to get rewarded for your loyalty.

Elite members in the Free Spirit program receive benefits like a free checked bag and the ability to pool points , plus waived award flight redemption fees, which can save you up to $50 when you redeem miles for a last-minute flight. Given how high additional Spirit fees can run, those benefits might mean significant savings for regular flyers.

Just realize that many of the "benefits" granted to Spirit elite status holders are already automatically granted by other airlines even to their least loyal customers who spend hardly any money.

To put it into perspective, you get a free drink and snack with Spirit Gold status, but you'd be hard-pressed to find other U.S. airlines that don't offer free refreshments to everyone anyway ( Frontier Airlines is a notable exception in that it largely matches the Spirit refreshment policy). And sure, the free carry-on bag is nice, but most major carriers let you bring a carry-on bag at no cost, anyway.

For what it's worth, Free Spirit elite status is relatively easy to attain for travelers who fly with the airline at least occasionally. Go ahead and sign up for the program — it's one of the few aspects of Spirit that is actually free. Just don't over-index on its value.

The United States' ultra-low-cost carrier, Spirit Airlines, offers travelers exclusive access to lower fares and discounted ancillaries through a membership program. The Spirit Saver$ Club is aimed at frequent travelers who could benefit from the exclusive offers during their travel throughout the membership period.

According to Spirit Airlines,

“When you join the Spirit Saver$ Club®, you’ll get exclusive access to some of the lowest fares available, as well as discounted prices on bags, seats, and other options such as shortcut security, shortcut boarding, and flight flex. The Spirit Saver Club is designed for travelers who wish to benefit from exclusive fares and discounted ancillaries, including seat choice, baggage fees, shortcut boarding, and shortcut security. The airline offers three tiers of membership, based on the length of the membership.

The fees start at $69.95 and go up to $129.90. The Spirit Saver Club membership structure is shown in the table below.

The airline automatically renews the membership for one year ($69.95) at expiration to avoid a lapse. Members can opt out of the program at the end of their purchased term. The membership can be purchased by filling out a simple online form with basic information. Benefits can be obtained through the carrier’s website when booking flights.

Spirit Airlines Prepares For Spring Break From Tampa With 4 New Routes

According to the airline,

Once you’ve signed up for the Spirit Saver$ Club®, you can immediately start saving by booking travel online and comparing your membership benefits to non-members'. For instance, when you search for a flight at Spirit.com , the pricing calendar on the Flight Availability page will show you the Spirit Saver$ Club® pricing options available for your travel dates. Offers and savings

The airline offers marginal discounts on airfares posted on the website. For example, a standard economy fare on a one-way flight between Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and Las Vegas (LAS) costs $185. The Spirit Saver$ Club fare is reduced by $29 to $156.

So, is it worth the membership cost?

On average, a passenger can save approximately $15 to $30 on a round-trip fare, including savings on bags. Therefore, one must make 3-4 trips with the airline each year to cover the membership costs. It's been an eventful few months when it comes to U.S. budget carriers' route networks, shifting capacity to reduce their exposure to plummeting fares in prime leisure markets like Florida, especially in Orlando.

Spirit Airlines is the latest with an update with seven new routes that the carrier confirmed Friday.

The Miramar, Florida-based company's latest routes focus on a handful of airports: San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) in California, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) in Maryland, Kansas City International Airport (MCI) in Missouri and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

There was also a notable transcontinental flavor to the new routes, which all launch in June or July.

Spirit's new routes

Here's the full rundown:

Scaling up in several cities

Many of the airports included in Friday's route announcement are places where the carrier has put a clear emphasis amid recent months' network adjustments.

Take Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon, for instance, which will get a new Spirit route from San Jose. This summer (in June, July and August) Spirit is set to grow its scheduled seats out of Porland by a whopping 153% over that same period in 2023, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

It's also set to grow seats by more than 50% this summer out of Kansas City, which got two new routes Friday — and by 44% out of San Jose, which gained the most capacity (three new routes) Friday.

In a statement Friday, San Jose's city manager, Jennifer Maguire, noted these three new Spirit routes the airport is getting this summer help the airport in its goal of "flying simple by offering more affordable direct flights."

Ironically, for its part, Spirit has said it hopes to do more flying that offers travelers flight connections as part of what the airline hopes will be a business turnaround.

BWI transcontinental focus

Also noteworthy in this latest route announcement: two new transcontinental flights from BWI — to San Jose and Sacramento International Airport (SMF). BWI is the point of origin for a fast-growing list of transcontinental options on Spirit.

The airline previously announced cross-country flights from BWI to Portland and San Diego International Airport (SAN). And Spirit's seats from BWI to the West Coast will be up 140% this summer over last year.

An airline spokesperson could not immediately comment on what, if any, routes the carrier is eliminating in unveiling these seven new routes. However, it's likely there's some give-and-take, since the carrier has been fleet constrained in recent months — a challenge that led Spirit to temporarily postpone its plans to fly to the brand-new airport in Tulum, Mexico.
