Enhance Your Star Trek Adventures With These Free Resources

It's #NationalDiceDay, so join the Star Trek RPG galaxy with these helpful tips!

Star Trek: The Original Series

StarTrek.com

There are a few things you need to play a game of Star Trek Adventures . You'll want at least one copy of the rules, though more than one will speed up game play. Same goes for the 20-sided dice to determine whether your characters succeed or fail. You will also need something to record character details and notes for events on the game. Then there are the optional things that might make gameplay a bit more comfortable, like a nice snack spread or spinning tracks off Star Trek soundtracks to get players in the mood.

We’ve scoured the internet for resources that will make your game easier to prep, more immersive and more fun. There are plenty of great options from Modiphius , the producers of the game, but we also wanted to focus on free and easy things that will make your game feel more authentically like Star Trek .

A Character Generation Website

Star Trek Adventures RPG

Everyone playing Star Trek Adventures needs to make a character. That’s your gateway into the setting. Making characters for the game is a bit of a mini game because you follow your character through their upbringing and early career in Starfleet. These decisions can be chosen by the player or rolled randomly for those who like the challenge of assembling a character from elements that might be contradictory.

You can also make a Star Trek Adventures character online right here . This creation tool allows players to make main characters, starships, and supporting characters. It supports the main three eras of play ( Enterprise , Star Trek , Star Trek: The Next Generation ) and also lets users choose what supplemental books they have access to for additional species and talents. If you don’t own those books, building characters through this tool offers a great way to try before you buy. It’s also a great tool even if you’re not playing the tabletop RPG thanks to the lifepath system. The process creates characters and ships with interesting histories and dramatic hooks that can launch fanfiction just as easily.

Looking for a little extra immersion? Load up the website and PDF on your tablet or touchscreen computer and skip the paper and pencils. Flipping through the rules on handheld tablets adds a perfect amount of futuristic- Trek flavor.

A Living Campaign

Star Trek Adventures RPG

RPGs are often supported by pre-written adventures. These are great to read as inspiration, to pull bits and pieces from to use

in your own stories or even to be run off the page for those times when you need a pre-built story because you haven’t had time to put an idea for a session together. Star Trek Adventures has dozens of adventures for sale as individual episodes or in collections like These Are The Voyages and Strange New Worlds . But it also has a massive campaign that can be played for free that spans multiple parts of the Star Trek timeline.

The Shackleton Expanse campaign not only offers a brand new part of the galaxy to explore, it offers missions set in the 2269 era of The Original Series and the 2371 era of The Next Generation . Any mission can be customized for any era, but these two timelines play to the long history of the Star Trek timeline. An ambitious Game Master might even decide to run two separate games of Star Trek Adventures with a different group in each era influencing each other. Play groups that want to be part of the living campaign can choose to be on one of the four ships included in the campaign: the Lexington in The Original Series era, or the Venture , Thunderchild or Bellerophon in The Next Generation era.

What is a living campaign? It means that, after each adventure, there’s a small questionnaire the group can send back to the company talking about the details of their game. The game designers and developers take this feedback into consideration and incorporate it into the next adventure of the game. That means players and game masters taking part influence this piece of the Star Trek setting after every new adventure is released!

Visualizing Your Character

Star Trek Adventures RPG

Drawing a character adds even more life into their portrayal. You may not be an artist or be unable to afford to hire one to draw your character. That’s okay! There are still plenty of ways you can visualize your character without going the most common routes.

Screen Capture : There are about 556 hours of Star Trek media between the shows and movies. The next time you watch something, keep an eye out in the background for characters who might fit your character’s description. All it takes is a screen capture and quick crop or two to send to a game master as a character portrait.

Star Trek Online : The character creator for Star Trek Online has a lot of great options in its free to play mode. For those groups willing to buy a few costume packs, those options expand the options for crewmembers by a lot. A screenshot and a crop also works here too, but the extra control allows for more custom looks and alien type characters.

Miniature Maker : Star Trek Adventures offers an excellent line of miniatures for iconic characters. For those unwilling or unable to customize their own, this online miniature maker is surprisingly robust. Customize your character with the proper uniform and props, print them out, cut and fold, and your character exists in the real world. Even for games that don’t use miniatures, taking the time to create these cut-outs can breath another dimension into your Star Trek Adventures character.

Start Playing Now

You can download this Quickstart PDF right now to start playing Star Trek Adventures . It includes six premade characters, an essential rules brief, and a copy of the episode “Signals” featuring a lost runabout, Romulan intrigue and Ferengi negotiations! All you need are dice and friends to play.

If you don't want want to turn on JavaScript, okay, I get that. But you'll have to use the telepathically-enabled version instead. Beam your ideas of your character directly at your browser, and our cadre of Betazoid character creation representatives will try to receive your telepathic broadcasts and record them for you. There's a greater likelihood of success if you're a Vulcan or a Napean. Otherwise... well, we're not going to lie: there's only a small chance that the telepathic broadcast will be received.

Star System Generation

I get that STA tends to shy away from crunchy details, but every once in a while, I want to throw crunchy details at players.

One thing that falls into that category is Star Systems. I kind of like being able to give my players a run-down of star system that they’re checking out. The thing is, I don’t think I’ve seen a really good set of RPG Star System generation rules in quite some time. Is anyone aware of a good set of Star System Generation rules? (Bonus points it those rules have taken into consideration the things we’ve learned since the discovery of exo planets).

What I’ve been doing up until now is use Donjon’s Star System Generator page ; that mostly works, but I can’t say “generate a system for me, but I need an earth-like planet in the fourth orbit.” So I do a lot of “spinning the wheel”. Anyone have anything better?

You are aware of the Star System creation rules on p. 302 ff. of the Shackleton Campaign Setting? If you need crunch regarding gravity etc. have a look at p. 145 ff. of the Core Rulebook. Take the gravity spans for each class, take min/max and 9 equidistant numbers in between and take 2d6 for a nice gaussian distribution.

Say what?!? Huh. I don’t know how I overlooked that. I’ll need to brush up on those rules.

Thanks for opening my eyes.

BC “If only the character generator supported this, I would have found it more easily…”

That is of interest. Thanks.

If you do want lots of detail: it’s a bit long in the tooth, but one of the best RPG rulesets for this in my experience is the GURPS 3rd edition Space rulebook. It produces a quite detailed set of “real world” data (as opposed to game stats) but focusses on what’s useful for RPGs, so you can place the worlds you want then fill in the gaps. It’s about US$9 on Warehouse 23 (GURPS Classic Space).

It was written when astronomers were just beginning to realise the frequency of exoplanets was higher than they thought, so is a little out of date!

If you want to focus more on the societal aspects, have a look at Mongoose’s Traveller.

I actually do have a generator here on my machine. It’s a python3 commandline tool, but it shouldn’t be too hard to build a simple website. Not sure how about Modiphius’ position on this ( @Modiphius-Jim ).

Thanks for that suggestion: I actually have a copy of that book (although I don’t think it’s come off my shelf in more than a decade). I’ve never actually played a game with the Gurps rules. But I’m re-reading Gurps: Space , now.

It looks like it’s a 1999 copyright so, yeah, I think your take is totally correct. I just did “Internet research” (which, as we know, never gives us inaccurate results) and apparently the first exoplanet was discovered in 1992, and the first exoplanet around a main sequence star was 1995.

I’ve also sometimes used the rules for star system generation from Hero Games’ Star Hero , Fifth Edition, which has lots of math, but starts with a big assumption (that I speculate is no longer believed, because exoplanets) about where the orbits should be.

Astrosynthesis from NBOS software is quite good.

The problem with most RPG planetary/solar system generation systems is we keep finding things that will break them. I play 2300AD which is one of the harder SFRPG’s out there, and the system generation in that was, for many years, the gold standard. Then we discovered Hot Jupiters, Panthalassa worlds, Super-Earths, Chthonian Worlds and so on. The original system could not comprehend the infinite diversity possible. As soon as you think you have a good system, some gas giant decides it’s going to barge it’s way in-system and occupy orbit 2 apparently just because it feels like messing up my diagram…

How interested would you be in having it merged with the character generator? The character generator currently everything in-browser, which probably means some retooling of what you have. But I kind of like the idea of one-stop-shopping for the STA rules. (Obviously, if Modiphius hates the idea, that’s a thing we have to acknowledge).

No, honestly: We can for sure talk about that.

The old RPG Spacemaster had a good star/system generator of the old paper and pencil type. I still use it today if I need to randomize a star system. As a system the RPG was too chart and detail heavy for me to enjoy playing it. But as a reference in support of other games it is fantastic.

Sorry, I haven’t completely dropped the ball on this. I’ve just been busy with a lot of non-STA stuff lately. I’d still totally like to chat. If you’re up for email, you can reach me a bc at bcholmes dot org.

I also just logged a GitHub issue about planetary systems to remind myself that I’d like to get around to doing this.

My crew is in the Lost Period, and are on a star mapping mission. I am working on an old pencil and dice system for generating star systems, planets and planetary details. Utopia Planitia may have some insight on this at first glance.

You should check out the sector generation tool in the character generator (it only shows up if you include the Shackleton Expanse source.) I’ve actually been making a bunch of changes in this part of the app, lately.

Purchaser's log This is a fun and inventive game that fits well with Star Trek Adventures. I have been playing it as an anthology game which is entertaining (a Ferengi merchant who goes back two years in time and ends up making an alliance - not realizing that he has ended up in an alternate timeline where the Borg invade the Federation and go on to invade the Gamma quadrant preventing the Dominion war)

A versatile game and well worth investing in.

I hope they release a companion guide will expanded ships and random charts - fingers crossed they make it so.

Replicator Resources: Star Trek Map—Stellar Cartography Made Easier

Navigating around the federation, much less the milky way galaxy, is not a walk in the park. it is challenging and daunting. fortunately, another group of star trek superfans developed a tool that trekkies have been using for years to get around the galaxy..

This handy stellar cartography tool can be used to take your Star Trek Adventures game to the next level at warp speed.

Peruse startrekmap.com . Play with the interface. Soon you will be zipping from system to system and gliding to quadrants unknown.

In addition to maps of the most popular areas of the Star Trek universe, the site provides handy tools. For instance, the Stellar Library provides information like common species, political powers, planetary and star classification, and details about common stellar phenomena like black holes and wormholes.

stellar library

Searches can be refined by the following categories:

  • Milky Way Galaxy An overview of the entire galaxy .
  • Gamma Quadrant The Gamma Quadrant was first surveyed by the Quadros-1 probe, launched during the 22nd century. After the initial discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole in 2369 extensive exploration began, which unfortunately also led to one of the most devastating wars in Federation history: The Dominion War.
  • Local Space The extents of the federation space and of many other powers.
  • UFP Main Core The Federation Main Core is an extensive map of the Federation’s birthplace. The founding and many early members are situated here, as well as the Federation’s most important trading partners, the major borders to other powers, species and all the core worlds of the Federation.
  • 22nd Century (Enterprise NX-01 ) A historical map of the explored space in the mid 22nd century. The destinations of Enterprise’s (NX-01) journey can be found here, including the Delphic Expanse and other halts, which ultimately led to the foundation of the United Federation of Planets in 2161.
  • Global Location Search Haven’t found what you’re looking for? Most of the known locations can be searched and hopefully found by simply using the global search for all maps at once, additionally, you can still use the local searches which are implemented in every map.

22nd century map key

Helpful tools like map keys and quick location searches will make startrekmap.com one of the must-have bookmarks for any Star Trek Adventures RPG fan.

It’s a wonderful resource. A shame it hasn’t been updated in nearly a decade now, but for the basics, definitely wonderful.

Star Wars Day is Saturday: Celebrate May the 4th with these deals

star trek adventures tools

Holy Sith, you guys, Star Wars Day  is upon us again.

"May the 4th" is a day for all lovers of Jedi, the Resistance, the Skywalkers, the Hutts, Boba Fett, Baby Yoda, Gamorrean guards, Maz Kanata, General Grievous, Rancor Keeper and Jek Porkins (RIP) to unite and celebrate all there is in the galaxy far, far away. (Why May 4, you ask? Why, it's right there in the date, a play on "May the Force be with you." )

This Star Wars Day, fans will likely be in a nostalgic mood with the 25th anniversary of "The Phantom Menace" arriving later this month. And lovers of Disney+ shows like "Andor" and "The Mandalorian" will be tucking into the new animated series "Tales of the Empire" while they await the June premiere of "The Acolyte."

The franchise full of colorful characters – good, bad and ugly – has remained beloved to generations since George Lucas' original 1977 " Star Wars ," which means a lot of ways to get your "May the 4th" on. Here are some of our favorites:

'The Phantom Menace' turns 25: Celebrate with our ultimate 'Star Wars' movie ranking

Watch the 'Star Wars' movies. Or, more likely, watch them again.

Don't look now but there's a "Star Wars" movie back on the big screen: This weekend, Lucas' first prequel "Phantom Menace" (originally released May 19, 1999) is returning to theaters for a special anniversary run .

If you can believe it, there are people who've never seen "Star Wars." But there's no excuse now that all nine movies in the Skywalker saga – as well as the spinoffs "Rogue One" and "Solo: A Star Wars Story" – are a few clicks away on the  Disney+ streaming service .

Longtime fans can break out the Blu-rays and DVDs, hunt for VHS cassettes, or – if you want to really go old school – dust off the laser discs. And we do suggest you watch the original edition of "Return of the Jedi," rather than the later special edition that took out the Ewoks' celebration song and inserted Christensen (rather than original "Jedi" star Sebastian Shaw,) into the Dead Jedi Club at the end.

"Yub nub." Never forget.

Binge 'Star Wars' shows, including the new animated series 'Tales of the Empire'

For Star Wars Day, Disney+ is premiering "Tales of the Empire," a new six-episode animated miniseries (and follow-up to 2022's " Tales of the Jedi ") centered on two characters venturing into the Galactic Empire from the original movie trilogy: Morgan Elsbeth, a villainess seen in "Ahsoka," is recruited by Imperial forces for her ruthless nature while fallen Jedi Barriss Offee, seen in "The Clone Wars" animated series, becomes one of Darth Vader's vicious Inquisitors.

And if you haven't had the pleasure of seeing the completely adorable Baby Yoda (aka Grogu), now's the time to catch up with the first three seasons of the Disney+ Western-flavored series " The Mandalorian " – starring Pedro Pascal as the armored title gunslinger. Or if your tastes are more politically flavored, check out the intriguing drama "Andor."

Break out the blue milk to pair with your Tauntaun cookies

Luke Skywalker's Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru had blue milk on their breakfast table back on Tatooine, and you can enjoy it as well with  these recipes . (Seriously, who doesn't want to try blue milk pudding ?!)

StarWars.com has a  whole section of food-related fun  for those who want to party hearty, including Ewok sushi , Tauntaun cookies (with candy innards!) and Chopper cereal treats . If you need more, the "Star Wars: Galactic Baking" cookbook  is full of sweet treats to satisfy your little Jawas.

Ranked: The 75 best 'Star Wars' characters

Read the further adventures of Luke Skywalker and pals

If the impending premiere of "The Acolyte" and news of upcoming movies haven't been exciting enough, the rash of recent comic books and novels – most of them pretty rad – have fleshed out stories not seen in the movies.

The flagship "Star Wars" comic is currently filling in the time between "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" as Luke comes to grips with Darth Vader being his dad. (Forty-year-old spoiler alert!) The recent "Dark Droids" crossover limited series put a horror spin on the usual galactic adventures. Comixology has a great digital sale going on to get newer comics and older series for cheap, and May 4 is also Free Comic Book Day this year, which you means you can grab an issue of "Star Wars" gratis at participating comic book shops on Saturday.

Book lovers wanting to take a trip in the wayback machine can check out the epic "The High Republic" saga, set 200 years before the events of the movies: Young-adult tale "Defy the Storm" is the latest of those chapters to come out. Those whose tastes veer more cinematic will appreciate the  "Alphabet Squadron"  trilogy, which follows a group of New Republic pilots hunting a mysterious TIE Fighter group exacting revenge after the fall of the Empire (see: "Return of the Jedi").

Say 'Punch it, Chewie!' to some kid activities

StarWa r s.com offers a whole slew of things  for crafty moms and dads to do with their children. Make a Baby Yoda pencil pouch, a Hoth snowglobe or a Death Star piñata, and print out various coloring sheets and word searches.

If your kids want some extra starpower, however, check out Daisy Ridley reading " BB-8 On the Run ," featuring her character Rey's little droid buddy. Plus, StarWarsKids.com is your one-stop resource for children to find out about all the characters and creatures fans love.

Buy something fun and extremely nerdy

Lots of places discount their Star Wars merch and/or release exclusives on May 4, and StarWars.com has a roundup of all the coolest stuff, from galactic pennants and R2-D2 luggage to Yoda bottles and Death Star rings. If you've got time on your hands (and sufficient shelf space in your house), Lego celebrates its 25th year collaborating with "Star Wars" by debuting a large collector's series version of the TIE Interceptor with a cute little TIE Pilot minifigure and his mouse droid, so you and your family can build to your heart's delight.

As the Mando might say, this is the way.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 6 Review: “Whistlespeak” Deconstructs the Prime Directive

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 6 takes the crew on a classic Star Trek mission but offers a unique perspective on the Prime Directive.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 5, "Mirrors."

For better and worse, when Star Trek: Discovery debuted on Paramount+ in 2017, it did a lot of things differently from past iterations of Gene Roddenberry's universe. While this seems like a smart thing to do in a six-decade-old narrative universe in order to keep things fresh, fans do expect certain kinds of adventures for these characters. Star Trek: Discovery got off to an awkward start with longtime Trekkies when it tried to be an epic space opera rather than a diplomatic procedural in space. Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 addressed this by going back to franchise roots, with Episode 6, "Whistlespeak," going as far as giving the USS Discovery crew a classic Star Trek away mission.

Here, Captain Michael Burnham and Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly are sent on an undercover away mission to retrieve the next clue on their hunt for the Progenitors' technology. The society on the planet is a pre-warp civilization, meaning the Prime Directive is in play. Sneaking around a pre-warp society is as classically Star Trek as it gets. It happened in Star Trek: Insurrection , the pilot episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , and even Captain Pike's second Star Trek: Discovery episode . In all these previous cases, the ship's crew broke the Prime Directive and revealed themselves to the indigenous people by the episode's end. However, "Whistlespeak" added a unique twist that examined Starfleet's General Order Number One and tied in neatly to the season's overall quest. Meanwhile, on the ship, members of the crew dealt with the events of previous episodes that shook them to their cores. With only four episodes left in the series, this is likely the last time fans will get to see a mission like this on Stark Trek: Discovery .

“Whistlespeak” Put the Spotlight Back on Sylvia Tilly

Captain michael burnham and her old roommate get one last adventure together, star trek: discovery's alex kurtzman & michelle paradise talk final season.

Sylvia Tilly is a "Mary Sue" in the most idealized sense of the term. She's a fan-insert character who was practically perfect in every way. Yet, there is more to the infamous fanfiction caricature coined by Paula Smith in "A Trekkie's Tale." Smith's story satirized early Star Trek fanfiction writers who had a habit of bungling the legacy characters to prop up their self-inserts. Lieutenant Mary Sue doesn't represent bad writing because she was inherently awesome. Rather, it's because the amateur authors made James T. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew fools around her. Tilly is brilliant and beloved, but she doesn't "ruin" the other characters by being too good at what she did. Rather, they were defined by their relationship with her.

Tilly successfully completed the Mother Compeer's Journey, a ritualistic race that granted access to a sacred space. Along the way, she bonded with Ravah, the child of the society's high priest, Ohvahz (Alfredo Narciso). This was another subtle proof that Tilly's superpower was connecting with people, not being flawless. Even though they were competing on this journey, Tilly helped Ravah complete the race. Unfortunately, she discovers the "prize" for winning the race was sacrificing one's life to the gods the people believe control the weather. Naturally, Captain Burnham saved them, but only because of Tilly's ability to connect with Ravah.

Like what "Under the Twin Moons (Season 5, Episode 2)" did with Captain Burnham and Saru, "Whistlespeak" is a chance for the captain to have one last mission with her roommate and best friend, Tilly. At the start of the mission, Tilly was insecure about her effectiveness as a teacher, and unsure if she was actually reaching her students. The relationship she built with Ravah indicated that Tilly can't help but be effective in that role. From the moment the awkward and affable theoretical engineer was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery , it was clear that she wasn't the typical Starfleet officer. However, in the 32nd Century, Tilly was the best person Starfleet had on hand who could mold cadets into the kind of heroes they need to be.

Star Trek: Discovery Examines the Consequences of the Prime Directive

With great technological power comes at least some responsibility, 'they're not really villains': star trek: discovery's moll & l'ak actors defend their characters.

The undercover away mission in a less advanced civilization and the eventual revelation of the larger galactic society are staples of Star Trek storytelling. The Prime Directive was a creation of Star Trek writer Gene L. Coon, who was responsible for many of the iconic elements established in Star Trek: The Original Series . Instead of conquering other planets or revealing themselves to the locals, Starfleet doesn't interfere with developing societies. However, many of Coon's own stories for Star Trek: The Original Series were about breaking the Prime Directive for better and worse.

The Denobulans who built the weather control towers on Halem'no may not have even been Starfleet, thus the Prime Directive didn't technically apply . Nonetheless, they built these towers to save the indigenous society from catastrophic storms like the ones on their own planet. In their own way, they broke the Prime Directive out of genuine concern for others and a sincere desire to help. The Denobulans perhaps assumed the towers would buy time for the society to advance, discover the technology and eventually learn to maintain it. Instead, the locals built a religion around the towers, believing that the gods were punishing them when four of the five towers fell to entropy.

In fairness, Captain Burnham didn't want to break the Prime Directive until she learned of the threat to Tilly and Ravah. Yet, in doing so, the captain helped the indigenous people learn to maintain and, possibly, repair the weather control towers. "Whistlespeak" showed how breaking the Prime Directive for even the best reasons can lead to regrettable consequences. Conversely, it also showed how breaking the rules can save others. This ethical dilemma fit right in with classic Star Trek's most famous interrogations of the Prime Directive.

The USS Discovery Crew Is Also on a Search for Purpose and Meaning

The crew are fully-fledged heroes in star trek: discovery season 5, but they want more, star trek: discovery's callum keith rennie shows a new side of starfleet.

In "Jinaal (Season 5, Episode 3)," Adira Tal broke up with the love of their life, Gray Tal, and then brought the Time Bug on the ship in "Face the Strange (Season 5, Episode 4)." In light of these, it makes sense that the capable young officer now feels insecure about their place aboard the USS Discovery. While some might expect Tilly, Paul Stamets or Dr. Hugh Culber to support them, it was actually the ship's new gruff First Officer, Commander Rayner, who helped Adira out. The people closest to Adira treated them with kid gloves because, in a very literal sense, they're still a kid. As of this writing, Adira is still a teenager. Commander Rayner showed confidence in their abilities, and his brusque style may be what Adira needed to rebound from the hits they took this season.

Tilly, Adira's training officer, also had her own crisis of faith, though it was far removed from this season's overarching story. Perhaps as setup for the upcoming spin-off Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , Tilly blamed herself for the surge of cadets dropping out of training. That Adira is so uncertain of their abilities and place in the bigger picture may be another blow to her confidence in her abilities as a teacher. Similarly, one of Adira's two found fathers, Paul, is desperate to crack the secret of the Progenitors' technology.

After Starfleet abandoned the project to recreate the USS Discovery's Spore Drive , Stamets began the season feeling aimless and despondent about his life's work. Yet, it doesn't seem like he's looking to replace the Spore Drive with this new discovery. Rather, he's likely hoping that the knowledge of the Progenitors will allow him to replicate the technology so it can still replace warp drive. Despite finally becoming the kinds of heroes Star Trek fans are used to seeing on TV, the USS Discovery's crew aren't done evolving and growing as people. With just a few episodes left in the season, fans now hope that the crew realizes their fullest potential before bowing out.

One Discovery Crewmember May Have Already Found What They’re Searching For

Dr. hugh culber is still struggling to process his personal journey, star trek: discovery's sonequa martin-green embarks on one final voyage.

The first scene with Dr. Culber in "Whistlespeak" builds on all the mentions he's made of his "abuela" this season. Dr. Pollard, the USS Discovery's other physician, developed a hologram technology similar to Tony Stark's B.A.R.F. system from Captain America: Civil War . The main difference was that instead of being made from programming software and provided data, the hologram was rendered from other people's memories of the digitally "resurrected" subject. As such, despite Culber's memories of his grandmother's spirituality, she reminds him that he's a man of science.

Ever since participating in the Trill zhin'tara ritual with Jinaal , he's felt strange. He learned that he was not only in good physical condition, but in good spiritual shape as well. Dr. Culber's journey across Star Trek: Discovery's five seasons was rough, even by Star Trek standards. He was killed in Season 1 and resurrected via the mycelial network. Just a few months later, he was whisked 1,000 years into an arguably worse-off future. Through solving the Burn and the planet-destroying Dark Matter Anomaly, he's been dealing with this trauma and serving as the ship's counselor. However, joining Jinaal and searching for, ostensibly, humanity's creators finally brought him a level of serenity.

As Dr. Culber stumbles into spiritual awareness, the exact opposite is happening on the planet below. His abuela may have raised him to be a doctor who trusts science, but the Progenitors' advanced science made him a man of faith. In a good use of irony, the revelation of advanced alien technology may rob Ohvahz and his people of their belief. He told Captain Burnham that past attempts to end the practice of sacrifice led to violence. Unfortunately, this well-crafted contrast just sort of sits there at the end of the episode. Perhaps it's a deliberate choice, because such things never align so easily in real-life either.

Star Trek: Discovery debuts new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

  • Offers a fresh perspective on Star Trek's Prime Directive philosophy.
  • Excellent use of the ensemble on the ship in stories that were narratively and thematically germane.
  • No villains or violence in the episode is another classic staple of Star Trek storytelling.
  • While well-crafted, the lack of strong resolution for the stories about Faith may be a missed opportunity.
  • Saru's continued absence makes his earlier arc feel disconnected from the Season's narrative and like an afterthought.
  • The episode deploys a third Star Trek staple: vague sci-fi reasons robots or the transporter can't be used to complete the mission.
