Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Cast on Season 2's Sneaky Comedy and Filling Big Legacy Shoes

And how legend Carol Kane fits in with the crew

Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is boldly going, alright: deep into the psyches of the Enterprise crew.

As Season 2 of the warmly received latest installment in one of television's earliest and most perennial franchises beams onto Paramount+ on Thursday, June 15, the series continues to phaser-focus on the sweet spot between classic old school Star Trek -style adventure and the modern arced-out storylines of the streaming era. For every science fiction high-concept conceit and allegorical socio-philosophical territory the series explores in its sophomore outing, new facets and depths of the characters are being mapped just as thoroughly, both in standalone episodes and lengthier plotlines that gradually unfold.

Anson Mount notes that while Christopher Pike remains firmly at the center of the Bridge during Season 2, the Enterprise's captain makes a habit of finding ways to enable his crew to discover their fullest potential. "I think that's a big part of what makes Pike, Pike, as opposed to all the other captains that we've seen in canon," Mount explains to TV Guide. "If Pike has one superpower as a captain, it's in turning the crew, particularly the Bridge crew, into a larger brain. I think Pike really sees himself as the microchip — the sorter, the conductor at the center of all of the action — and his job is just to get the brainwaves flowing, and then pick and choose the best ideas."

At the same time, the new season finds Pike struggling to find his footing away from the captain's chair, particularly when challenges to his romance with Captain Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ) arise that force him to reevaluate his path, on- and off-duty.

"His secret is he's never quite been sure why he was made a captain, so he tends to wear his heart on his sleeve in the way that most of us do when we feel… not so much insecure, but maybe a bit out of place and hoping that other people can relate to our sense of displacement," says Mount. "It provides a wonderful vulnerability to the character that I think makes him endearing to the audience, as well as to his crew."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Review: This Is Star Trek At Its Best

Mr. Spock ( Ethan Peck ) also faces an ongoing series of complications in his personal life, as his growing bond with Christine Chapel ( Jess Bush ) threatens to disrupt his relationship with his fiancé T'Pring ( Gia Sandhu ) — and it wouldn't be Star Trek if a sci-fi plot twist didn't offer an additional monkey wrench when the science officer is suddenly cut off from his Vulcan half and completely connected to his human emotions.

"This season we see a very human Spock, and in the future I hope that we'll get to explore the ways in which he's very Vulcan and the ways in which he's other things that we don't really know about him yet," says Ethan Peck. "The writers have really enjoyed the human qualities of the Spock that I'm portraying."

That included intensifying the attraction between Spock and Chapel, which leads to some unexpected developments. "It was a surprise to me! " says Peck.

Bush says that she and Peck have had to follow their instincts in developing the will-they-won't-they chemistry that connects Spock and Chapel. "We don't get a lot of time to explore before we are being filmed; it's just happening," she explains. "The key is to just stay really playful and open and be always noticing new things that come up and catching them and accepting them and putting them back out there."

Una "Number One" Chin-Riley's ( Rebecca Romijn ) journey takes her into a classic, durable Star Trek framework, the kind of Starfleet-style courtroom drama that fueled episodes like The Original Series' "Court Martial" and The Next Generation's "The Measure of a Man," in which her long-hidden status as a genetically engineered Illyrian is put on trial.

"It was a real honor to get to do one of those," Romijn tells TV Guide. "And within this utopian, futuristic Trek world, it was one of these trials where humanity is put to trial — that we still have flaws and these very human themes of prejudice and persecution that still affect people, and it was interesting to explore that and sink my teeth into that episode."

Dr. M'Benga's ( Babs Olusanmokun ) enigmatic past poses both fresh dangers and unexpected opportunities as some of his mysterious abilities surface. "He came from a heavy first season, and so now we're seeing a bit more of his past, and some challenges he's had, and some perhaps skills he's got that we didn't see before," says Olusanmokun. "We're just peeling the layers and trying to give everything we can with M'Benga, just keeping him really dynamic."

Melissa Navia promises that Erica Ortegas will at last get her own showcase in the new season, offering a deeper glimpse at the helm officer. "You're going to see more of her backstory, more of what brought her to the Enterprise , and more of what makes her this confident, cocky, hotshot, helmsman that we are all falling in love with, including myself," she reveals.

Carol Kane, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Only Slightly Warped Drive

When Strange New World's debut season concluded, the crew was down a Chief Engineer following the death of Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak), but that role will be filled by a new officer in charge of the starship's warp drive and related hardware. Veteran actress Carol Kane ( Taxi ) joins the cast as Lt. Pelia, who brings a unique backstory and eccentric sensibility along with her.

"I could never imagine that somebody would ask me to be on Star Trek  — I just couldn't imagine that!" Kane admits. "It just hit me out of the blue and I thought I got to try it, and I'm glad I did. It's really fun!"

While there are secrets aplenty about Pelia to be unveiled as the new season unrolls, it's safe to say the role, while quirky, is considerably more serious-minded than some of Kane's previous, wackier work.

"I really like the fact that I am someone that feels powerful and feels entitled to show that power and that wisdom, because I've been around a lot longer than anybody else, and that's really a great liberty," Kane says, noting that almost immediately Pelia develops a flinty rapport with Number One.

"I'm butting heads with Rebecca, even though she's like eight feet taller than me," Kane laughs. "The two of us had so much fun with that because I have to look straight up at her. I mean, I'm bossing her around… We did a couple really fun scenes like that and yeah, it's really great to feel entitled to be so powerful."

"I was positively starstruck when Carol Kane walked onto our set, but she does this really funny thing where she acts like she's never been there before, [like] he has no idea how a set works," says Romijn. "I loved playing my height against her. Some people don't like it when I'm tall next to them. She really played it up — I loved the way she reacted to that. I had so much fun with her. She's an incredible addition to the show. And the nature of her character is so different than anything we've ever seen in the Trek world, but it just blends beautifully."

Phasers On Fun

Although the addition of Kane doesn't mean that Strange New Worlds is delving into the sort of outrageousness that the franchise's animated entry Star Trek: Lower Decks specializes in, the new season continues to use comedic moments to great effect throughout. Indeed, a sly sense of humor has long been baked into the DNA of the Star Trek franchise — with The Original Series' "The Trouble With Tribbles," Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, The Next Generation's "QPid" among the hallmarks — and Strange New Worlds leans ever further into subtle but steady character-driven comedy.

"That's just been so much fun," says Mount. "With a show like ours — with any action-adventure — I think you got to know when to pull back the reins a little bit and not be so deliberate, and that's been a really important part of the equation. ... It tends to reveal a lot more and a lot more sides of the characters than if you're just being deliberate and have the throttle to the metal the whole way you're going. So I think it's given us a really good sense of the life of the show over the course of time."

"People forget how funny The Original Series was," adds Romijn. "There was a tremendous amount of comedy between all of those characters that I think sort of got forgotten about in some of the series. And I think as we go back and re-embrace The Original Series with our show and the standalone episodes, we're really able to seek out as much comedy as we possibly can without affecting the stakes. Watching Anson find funny moments just tickles me."

"That's [due to] a really wonderful synergy between the writers and the actors," says Peck. "I don't think they knew exactly who they were writing for in the first season, and they discovered our strengths and our comedic abilities and then began to write to those."

The Ultimate Guide to What to Watch on Netflix, Max, Prime Video, and More

Bush says she finds that sequences that are lighter in tone help endear the characters to the viewers, and prompt greater investment when the stakes grow serious. "Having moments of levity really open people's hearts to be moved — it's an important tool in touching people deeply," she says. "If you are stepping into comedy, you find out new things about your character in that light, so it all feels like part of a big stretchy excavation process."

Navia says those moments of levity, even in the gravest moments, also mirror how everyday human beings respond to challenging circumstances, "where you're constantly in a state of life or death, and you still can crack a joke, and you can still find the humor in a dark situation."

"When you think about grief — and Season 2 definitely is going to tackle that — if you're in a constant state of everything being dark, that will break you down," she adds. "So you look for those people who can bring levity to a situation, because that's life: Life is death, and it's humor, and it's where we find that blend."

As for the seasoned comedienne Kane, she was pleased to have permission to pepper Pelias with distinctive quirks. "They wrote a lot of stuff that's funny, and then you make choices, some creative choices to support that," she explains. "They allowed me to do an interesting vocal thing with my voice, and that was really brave of them because they could have just said, 'No, no, we want your own voice,' but they allowed me to take a leap there and I think that seems to be good for all of us."

Where Others Actors Have Gone Before

In the first season several of the actors became the custodians of legacy roles long established in the franchise, whether they be characters with rich backstories like Pike or briefly seen blank slates like M'Benga. But coming off the well-received debut, the actors are feeling a greater sense of ownership over their roles.

"It is surreal to me every single day I'm on set that not only am I on Star Trek , but I'm the captain of the Enterprise — It's bonkers!" laughs Mount. "But also, thank God it's happened to me at this stage in my life and not 20 years ago, or I would not have known how to handle it. At a certain point, you've got to be able to compartmentalize [the legacy] and say, 'Okay, what is this scene in front of me about? What needs to happen to realize this piece of the episode?' And just not worry about it, right? Because you can't make that leap with being so burdened with responsibility."

Romijn agrees, adding, "I think those of us who are playing these legacy roles have come a long way from waking up before we go to set going, 'I hope I get this right, I hope I get this right. I can't let anyone down. I hope I get this character right,' to now having enough ownership where the writers are coming to us and asking us for character beats or input. And that feels great."

"Not being fired during or after Season 1 was really encouraging for me," chuckles Peck. "I still felt like this is mine to lose in a way because the rule set of Spock is so determined. And I didn't make the rules and I've got to be as devout to them as his character, because he is so precise. So yeah, it's been a wild ride and every day is a new challenge. Every episode is strange and scary and deeply satisfying once it's completed. And I just do my best to have an experience as the character adhering to those rules."

"I think the writers have done a really wonderful job of trusting us to take the essence of our previous characters," adds Bush. "My situation is different to Ethan's, of course, because his character is much more cemented in the canon. But after Season 1, we've been given so much license to make it our own. And so by the time Season 2 rolled around, we had trust, we built it out, we played."

Journey to Technobabble

Acting in the Star Trek franchise also comes with its own unique set of challenges — the tongue-twisting, memory-testing sci-fi jargon known on set as "technobabble," acting opposite people places and things that will be added later via VFX, and more — few of which have changed since the flagship series debuted in 1966. And the cast admits they've been working diligently to master the nuances necessary to function in a 23rd Century setting.

"The technobabble, that's still difficult," says Mount. "It's like being on a medical procedural in a way — except on medical procedurals, they have registered nurses and doctors there to be advisors, to tell you what it means, that what you're talking about has meaning. In our show, sometimes you have to figure that out for yourself."

"Some of the lines that I have to say as Spock are riddled with scientific jargon, either real or imaginary, and dispensing that in a coherent and understood way is such a challenge," says Peck. "And it's like whenever I get a script and I'm like, 'Oh gosh — this is going to be a zinger for me.' If it's the ship's under threat and Pike's like, 'Spock, explain gravitational redshift,' and I've got to deliver an encyclopedic explanation of what that is under duress, but still as Spock not affected by the emotion — I have not mastered that and I'll continue to work on it."

Bush, too, struggles with casually spouting Chapel's medical terminologies while also acting in character and suppressing her natural Australian accent. "I've trauma blocked it, but I was boxing or something at the same time and the collection of words just was an absolute rollercoaster that I just could not do it!" she laughs. "I mean, most of the time I don't even think about my American accent, but there are times with the medical jargon that it just becomes very apparent I'm not American."

Navia says her biggest challenge was less about delivering mouthfuls of sci-fi speak and more about looking convincing pressing buttons and throwing toggles at the helm. "For me it was flying the ship," she sighs. "Fans are going to be watching everything, and they're going to know if I am flying this ship or not." She internalized the responsibility to such a degree that her co-star Celia Rose Gooding told her she could actually see the physical change the faux-piloting sequences inspired.

"Right as we're going into some heavy action scene I almost go into 'a football stance,' is what she called it," says Navia. "Where my body becomes one with the helm, which then is what's launching our ship forward. And I don't really think about it that much, but she's absolutely right: it kind of takes over all of me."

Kirk (Paul Wesley), setting up his Strange New Worlds season 2 return in a recurring role as the younger Lt. Kirk. Some clues as to what's to come in Strange New Worlds season 2 from those episode titles include "Hegemony" possibly being about the Gorn , as their civilization is known as the Gorn Hegemony. "Under the Cloak of War" certainly sounds straightforward and ominous, and "Ad Astra Per Aspera" is Latin for "To the Stars With Difficulty." Episode 2 of Strange New Worlds season 2 will deal with the court-martial of Number One. Paramount+ released the following clip of Una's trial from Strange New Worlds season 2 you can watch below:

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Cast

The entire cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is returning for season 2, including Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Lt. Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One AKA Commander Una Chin-Riley, Christina Chong as Lt. La'an Noonien Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Ensign Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. Joseph M'Benga. Uhura has notably been promoted from Starfleet Cadet to Ensign as she remains on the Starship Enterprise in Strange New Worlds season 2.

The two newest additions to the Strange New Worlds season 2 cast are Paul Wesley, who will portray Lt. James T. Kirk, and Carol Kane, who plays the Enterprise's new Chief Engineer, Commander Pelia. Dan Jeannotte also reprises his recurring role as Lt. Sam Kirk, who may not be glad to see his younger brother, Jim, on the Enterprise. Melanie Scrofano is also back as Captain Batel, who is Captain Pike's girlfriend, Adrian Holmes reprises Admiral Robert April, and Gia Sandhu returns as Spock's Vulcan fiancée, T'Pring. In addition, Bruce Horak is rumored to return as a new character after Chief Engineer Hemmer's noble death in Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 9, "All Those Who Wander." Yetide Badaki also appears in Strange New Worlds season 2 as Number One's defense attorney during her Starfleet court-martial.

Another new Strange New Worlds season 2 character is Chief Jay, played by Noah Lamanna. So far, nothing about their character has been revealed. It's quite possible that Chief Jay could replace Chief Kyle (Andre Dae Kim) as the Enterprise's Transporter Chief. Adelaide Kane, best known for Grey's Anatomy , has also been cast in Strange Worlds season 2 for one episode, but it is unknown what her role will be. And perhaps the most important 'character' in Strange New Worlds is the Starship Enterprise itself, which gets a new bar in season 2 for the crew to congregate in.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Story Details

Strange New Worlds season 2 will resolve season 1's cliffhanger and two major exits from the Starship Enterprise in order to bring both Number One and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh, who resigned her Starfleet commission, back aboard. Una's trial will take place in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra Per Aspera," and however that shakes out in regard to her rights as a genetically engineered Illyrian , Number One will take her place as the Enterprise's First Officer again.

Strange New Worlds season 2's trailer dropped numerous clues about what to look forward to in the upcoming 10 episodes. The Klingons return in their classic Star Trek: The Next Generation appearance, as opposed to how they were depicted in Star Trek: Discovery, and drink blood wine with Spock. Kirk and La'an go on an away mission, and Jim may get romantically involved with the descendant of his greatest enemy, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). However, Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Akiva Goldman hinted that Lt. Kirk is dating Carol Marcus, setting up Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Ensign Uhura also meets James Kirk for the first time, and the equally historic canonical first meeting between Kirk and Spock will also happen in Strange New Worlds season 2.

Speaking of Spock, the Vulcan shares a passionate kiss with Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) in Strange New Worlds season 2, which could lead to the end of his engagement to T'Pring. Strange New Worlds season 2 will also delve into the backstories of Nurse Chapel and Dr. Joseph M'Benga. Finally, Lt. Erica Ortegas is also finally going to have her history explored, which includes how the Enterprise's hotshot helmsman was a war veteran, possibly of Star Trek: Discovery 's Klingon War. Along with seeing how new Chief Engineer Pelia fits into the Enterprise, there is plenty of character development and intrigue to come in Strange New Worlds season 2.

Strange New Worlds Is Crossing Over With Star Trek: Lower Decks

One of the most anticipated events in Strange New Worlds season 2 is the crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . The crossover, which is directed by Jonathan Frakes, is episode 7 of Strange New Worlds season 2, titled "Those Old Scientists." The title is a joke from Lower Decks season 1 explaining what the "TOS" abbreviation stands for in Star Trek canon. In the crossover episode, Lower Decks stars Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome will portray their animated series Ensigns, Bradward Boimler and Beckett Mariner, in live-action. Frakes calls the crossover a "flat-out comedy" and promises there will also be animated sequences in the episode, which features dialogue by Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan.

Strange New Worlds ' crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, and it's one of the creative "big swings" showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers promise for season 2. Perhaps even "bigger swings" are the 9th and 10th episodes of Strange New Worlds season 2, which the cast and creative team are keeping mum about, but they hint are even wilder than the Lower Decks crossover. It's unlikely fans will feel Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will lack boldness when all is said and done.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres Thursday, June 15, on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 review

As soon as I watched the first of six screeners for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, I knew we were in for a ride. I say this as both a journalist and a lifelong Trekkie. Coming off the euphoria of Star Trek: Picard season 3, my thirst for more Star Trek has been insatiable and Strange New Worlds hits all the right notes.

Star Trek is at its best when it has a cast you can cheer for. We've been lucky as fans over the years to have casts that are so special we celebrate their return decades after a series ends. With Strange New Worlds , the cohesion of the cast is what really makes the show special. One look at their support for each other on social media and at events makes it clear that they're friends in real life, but that camaraderie shines through in their performances, too.

Season 1 saw the crew coming together in some pretty extreme circumstances. There was loss and tragedy that will continue to be felt. But the positive impact is that they have been brought closer together as a team. They can communicate without words; a single raised eyebrow or half-grin relays whatever needs to be said. That's the kind of magic that comes with a crew that works .

When it comes to stories, I find the story-of-the-week format to be refreshing. (It also makes it easier to rewatch episodes without having to remember where it fits in the larger story arc) The writers have done a phenomenal job developing stories that allow the crew of the Enterprise to do what they do best as they seek out new life and explore new places.

Overall, as sophomore seasons go, Strange New Worlds season 2 is cohesive and fun, and that's what Star Trek should be. - Sarabeth Pollock

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 cast

The U.S.S. Enterprise crew is returning for season 2. Anson Mount ( Hell on Wheels ) will once again take the helm as Captain Christopher Pike, with his trusty first officer Number One, played by Rebecca Romijn ( X-Men ), at his side. Ethan Peck ( In Time ) continues his journey as Science Officer Spock.

Jess Bush ( Playing for Keeps ) is Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong ( Heirs of the Night ) is La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding ( Breakwater ) is Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia ( Bull ) is Lt. Erica Ortega and Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) portrays the ship's chief medical officer, Dr. M'Benga.

Paul Wesley ( The Vampire Diaries ) will also return as James T. Kirk in season 2.

As of this writing, Carol Kane ( The Princess Bride ) is the only new cast member who has been announced. She'll play a character named Pelia.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 plot

There aren't many details about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds but here's a general summary from Paramount Plus: " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is based on the years Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The series features fan favorites Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. The series follows Captain Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number One in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy."

Of course, the caveat to this summary is that James T. Kirk is already on board, and we can only imagine that his role will become more prominent as the second season develops.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 trailer

The official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds shows how far the crew has come and the many adventures fans can look forward to in the second season. "Hold onto your saddles," Captain Pike says, and for good reason. There's also a blink-and-you'll-miss-it first look at the crossover with the Star Trek: Lower Decks crew.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2: Who stars in the new season?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back and already on some brave new voyages. So who’s in season 2 of the spin-off?

Prequels can be tricky things to pull off, but so far, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is doing well with it. The show is set roughly five years before the original Star Trek series, as the U.S.S. Enterprise is under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. He’s aided by first officer Spock and Una Chin-Riley, aka Number One. Even as he knows his dark fate to come, Pike is determined to carry out his duties to explore new worlds and boldly go where no man has gone before.

Season 1 involved some great adventures in the spirit of classic Star Trek, along with some unique time-travel escapades. Season 2 is already kicking things off in a grand adventure and the promise of more action to come. So who’s back for Season 2?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 cast

The main cast is intact, with Anson Mount as Pike; Ethan Peck as the younger Spock; Jess Bush as nurse Christine Chapel; Christina Chong as security chief La’an Noonien-Singh; Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura; and Babs Olusanmokun as Chief medical officer Joseph M’Benga.

Also returning in a smaller role is Dan Jeanotte as Sam Kirk, the younger brother of the famous captain. Speaking of which, after cameoing in the season 1 finale, Paul Wesley ( The Vampire Diaries ) becomes a regular as the younger James T. Kirk, still working his way up to captain. Meanwhile, legendary Emmy-winning actress Carol Kane plays Pelia, the eccentric new alien chief engineer.

Must Read. Star Trek shows and movies coming in 2023 and beyond. light

Even bigger is that somehow, season 2 will have a crossover with the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks as Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) end up on the Enterprise in a crazy mission.

The full cast list

  • Anson Mount as Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Spock
  • Jess Bush as Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M’Benga
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley / Number One
  • Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk
  • Dan Jeannotte as George Samuel “Sam” Kirk
  • Carol Kane as Pelia
  • Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid as Mariner and Boimler

With such a high-powered cast mixed with great sci-fi action and thrills, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to get even bolder in season 2.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Scotty Actor Addresses How He's Making The Character More Authentic For Season 3

The first Scottish-born Scotty is doing it right.

Martin Quinn as Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be the first time a Scottish actor will play the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, and new-ish recruit Martin Quinn wants to make sure he's doing it right. The actor recently revealed that during the filming for Season 3, he'd made suggestions about how to make his character more authentic and perhaps a bit less stereotypical than past iterations of the chief engineer. Naething wrong wi' that!

Quinn recently spoke to The BBC about following in the footsteps of Trek vets such as James Doohan and Simon Pegg in portraying Scotty, and his experience thus far on the show. Quinn first appeared during Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 ending and he'll have a larger presence in Season 3 of the upcoming Trek series . In the interview, the actor revealed some of the smaller ways he's trying to make the role feel more authentic during production, and the efforts being made by the writing staff. In his words:

They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it. And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that's really nice - not everyone's like that.

Martin Quinn and the writers have made some tweaks to make Scotty at least sound more Scottish, which is something fans from the country will likely appreciate, since even the best performative accent only goes as far as how valid the vocabulary is. I'd imagine we'll be seeing a lot more of the character in Season 3 and beyond, as showrunner Henry Alonso Myers previously said the goal was to put the original Star Trek characters on the ship before they become their actualized selves.

With the news that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was renewed for Season 4, Scotty will definitely have more time to become the miracle worker chief engineer that fans know too well. For a little while he'll have the support of his former instructor and current Enterprise chief engineer Pelia, played by the legendary actress Carol Kane . Martin Quinn seems to be enjoying the job so far, but did mention there are some hiccups in being one of the only Scottish actors on the crew:

I'm constantly having to enunciate because I don't think they know what I'm saying. It’s trying to find the balance, because it’s not just Scottish people watching this TV show, but I want to be as authentic as possible to how I speak.

I can't fault him for that, and seeing as Outlander is a hit show primarily set in Scotland, I think audiences outside of the country are able to adapt to his voice regardless. I'm eager to see him and the cast back in new episodes, and I'm still crossing my fingers we can get at least one episode released before 2025 .

Martin Quinn's quotes about keeping Scotty authentic are interesting, and it leads me to wonder what other ways TOS characters may change as they are introduced in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . (Will Spock be "more Vulcan" or something?) That said, this change stems more from Quinn' attempting to correct the misguided attempts to create a character previously portrayed as Scottish, so it remains to be seen if other characters will change at all when they're brought in.

As fans wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, they can stream the previous two seasons with a Paramount+ subscription . Of course, they can also catch the final season of Discovery , which is streaming new episodes on Thursdays.

Actor Talks “Authentic” Scotty On ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’; Season 3 Production Passes Milestone

Last week brought big news for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which has been renewed for a fourth season. But before that, they still need to finish work on season 3, which is currently in production. We have an update on how production is going, as well as some new comments from the actor who is playing Scotty in season 3.

Martin Quinn rebranding Scotty

First introduced in the season 2 finale, Scottish actor Martin Quinn has taken over the role of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, The legendary Starfleet engineer first played by Canadian James Doohan in the original Star Trek , and later by Englishman Simon Pegg for the J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek feature films. Speaking to BBC Scotland about being the first Scot to play Scotty, Quinn says: “It’s the power of representation, isn’t it?” Quinn (who is from Paisley in Scotland) also “jokingly” told the BBC: “We are rebranding him, he’s from Paisley now.”

The actor playing the young Scotty revealed how being from Scotland has helped shape the role as they are shooting the third season. From the article:

Since taking the role, he says he has been working with writers to suggest authentic Scottish changes to his character. “They let me put in the word ‘baw-heid’ instead of ‘turnip-heid,” he says. “Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it. And [the writers] are wanting to be authentic to Scotland as well, and that’s really nice – not everyone’s like that.”

According to Quinn, his authentic accent has sometimes proven difficult on set, revealing “I’m constantly having to enunciate because I don’t think they know what I’m saying.”

Behind the scenes on episode 7

Production on season 3 began in December and TrekMovie has confirmed that as of last week they completed work on episode 7. The episode was directed by Sharon Lewis. This was her first time directing for the franchise and in a video posted on Instagram a couple of weeks ago she took advantage of the quiet during lunch hour to sit in Captain Pike’s chair…

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Sharon Lewis (@thesharonlewis)

On April 10 Lewis posted a video on Twitter/X announcing she had wrapped production on her episode.

Last day of the incredible journey that is Star Trek Strange New Worlds. Every set is great -cast & crew amazing but there is a special vibe going on here. It’s an iconic show has its roots in me from back in the day rushing home to watch Uhura on the OG Star Trek -ever grateful! pic.twitter.com/RLi91VqxP3 — sharon lewis (she/her) (@thesharonlewis) April 10, 2024

The video features behind-the-scenes shots that indicate her episode included scenes on the bridge, a shuttle, transporter room, and the ship’s bar/lounge.

There are 3 more episodes to complete, so the show should be done by the end of May. Paramount+ recently confirmed season 3 will debut in 2025.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Gets New Science Lab… And 2025 Release

While watching the finale I thought, wait did they get an actual Scottish actor? He is a great Scotty.

Although Jimmy Doohan is beloved as Scotty, and rightly so, the one thing I disliked about his performance was that he was playing an old-fashioned kind of engineer, whereas Scotty as written was clearly a genius. But Doohan didn’t show us that spark of extreme intelligence in his performance, the way, say, Leonard Nimoy did in his. I’m hoping that Martin Quinn can give us that spark and make it more believable that Scotty can come up with brilliant new inventions in just a short time.

Apples and oranges. One would argue that Scotty used his expertise, intelligence and adaptability more than any other to save the day.

You’re talking about the script, and I’m talking about the actor. As you say, that’s apples and oranges. :-)

Perhaps, but in The Original Series (as opposed to in the movies), Scotty was portrayed as a bad ass whenever he was put in charge of the bridge.

Plus he had a drinking problem.

I was going to comment on that earlier. James Doohan breathed personality into the character (almost universally beloved) but the character itself was badly written. Brilliant engineer, bad ass when in command, but also a raging alcoholic, and shockingly bad judgement when personal feelings for a female crew member was involved. He was thinking with his d**k before that was a thing.

….I’m pretty sure “raging alcoholic” is a bit strong of a term, at least from my perspective. To each their own. I’d even stop short at saying the character had a ‘drinking problem.’ Kudos to all teetotallers out there, but in my view Scotty liked to simply take a drink now and again. Yes, it could be concluded he drank more than the rest of the TOS leading characters, but to me that doesn’t constitute a ‘problem.’ Even in Relics he reminded Geordi: “Never get drunk unless you’re willing to pay for it the next day.” That’s called responsible drinking where I come from. If he was a raging alcoholic he never would have become the legend he was, (or shown up to join Geordi that morning). Anyway, I digress.

Not to worry, I’m pretty sure the character will be written as tamer in every aspect for SNW, so as not to offend society. Cheers (or not, apparently).

But then again, I am a person who did use ‘shockingly bad judgment’ and fell in love with a coworker. What do I know. (We’ve been together for 22 years, btw). :)

To be honest he was portrayed as a bit of a stereotype as were the Irish characters. Perhaps a personal prejudice of Roddenberry or simply a reflection of the time. As for his judgement where female crew members were concerned, that could apply to most of the senior staff, especially Kirk.

Oh man, the Irish stereotyping never stopped. “Fair Haven” and “Spirit Folk” somehow managed to be more embarrassing than Voyager’s Club Med holoprogram. We only didn’t get a leprechaun in “If Wishes Were Horses” because Colm Meaney had some clout by then.

“But, Mr. President, Grant is an alcoholic!” “Find out what he’s drinking and give it to all my generals.”

Is he a raging alcoholic? Or just Scottish?

Yes, Doohan was good at showing us the badass side of Scotty, and I liked that a lot. I just wish he’d noticed that the scripts also made him a freaking genius. :-)

Corylea I hear what you’re saying however on TVH, I thought he brought the engineering mastery you alluded to demonstrating practical skills and well as theoretical knowledge on materials science, power generation and complex problem solving.

Yes, those things were in the SCRIPT. I’m talking about how the actor portrayed what was in the script, and it seemed to me that Doohan was caught up in the “crusty old engineer” stereotype from a zillion World War II movies and didn’t notice that the Star Trek scripts made THIS engineer a genius.

Wow I disagree with this. His portrayal as Scotty as a The Doomsday Machine is actually my favorite (not counting the time his accent disappears). He beamed over to the Enterprise and got right to work fixing the transporter.

Think Doohan played Scotty as a gifted, nuts and bolts guy without any pretensions of “intelligence”. He proved how smart he was by his actions.

I disagree. I think he was indeed played as an intelligent old school engineer able to see things in his head and improvise along the way.

I’d say it’s more important for Star Trek to humanize certain characters, to give them that Every Man or every person quality so that we’re not overwhelmed with supergeniuses. See also Dr. McCoy, Miles O’Brien, Tom Paris, etc. They’re all highly skilled in their respective fields, but there’s also a casualness with which they execute their duties that connects them to our time.

Personally, I enjoy the contrast where you have this ultra advanced society that still has the occasional Scotsman or Irishman with his sleeves rolled up, nursing a hangover, grumbling about trying to meet a deadline. Hooray, my people are represented on screen!

“Unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent…”

That reminds me, I must re-watch Sir Sean in ‘Robin and Marion’ one day. It had a great cast! – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075147/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_0_q_robin%2520and%2520marion

Which reminds me, I must re-watch Sean Connery in the 1976 ‘Robin and Marion’ movie again someday. Check it out on the imdb(.)com site, as it had a terrific cast!

Nice to see a Scots actor given the role of ‘Scotty’ now. I caught Martin Quinn being interviewed on tv the other day, and he came across well. It’s now piqued my curiosity to give SNW another go, as I never actually bothered with the show after not particularly liking the way the opening episode’s set-up unfolded – due to the fact that my own ‘Star Trek’ canon begins with the excellent ‘The Cage’ pilot episode’s storyline, and skips the events shown in the 2-part ‘The Menagerie’ episodes altogether!

But I’m at a point where I’m ready to ignore that initial SNW introduction now concerning Pike’s supposed ‘fate’, and despite being aware of one or two dubious aspects to come, will check out the rest of the show to see if there’s any storylines I happen to like with the crew already in place, ‘mid-adventure’ on board the Enterprise so speak.

And hopefully, this nu-‘Scotty’ will turn out to be a genius, ‘bad ass’ who happens to like a drink now and then too – no problem!

Did Scotty really have a drinking problem, or was he a hard drinker when appropriate? I hope they don’t pathologize this!

I like that he’s from Paisley. The Patter Bar is a fun little pub. Scotty is brining the Patter by calling people baw-heids.

I hope this Scotty prefers the pub over the club. I suffered major psychic damage when Scotty was shown to be drinking in a nightclub in Star Trek Into Darkness.

SNW has very highs and lows when it comes to casting. Martin Quinn is great casting of a legacy character, right up there with Ethan Peck as Spock and Celia Gooding as Uhura. Now that Kirk casting though…..

I guess it’s always a matter of perspective. Paul Wesley has single-handedly made me hope that SNW continues through Kirk’s five-year mission.

Please don’t remake TOS

Definitely not a remake, no, but a general larger structure that TOS can fit into would work for me. My past self would consider this blasphemy, so I understand your reply, but that’s just how much Paul Wesley and SNW in general has won me over.

I like Paul Wesley more than I thought I would, but William Shatner will always be Kirk.

SNW is a good show and one of the better outings from the Kurtzman era. However, for me it’s doing stuff I feel was done better previously and I think musicals and Muppets, if done, are too gimmicky and not what I like to see in Trek. The dialogue is also too cringey at times.

I found that Paul Wesley did a fine job in his portrayal of Kirk. Don’t forget, he played a Kirk that was before the influence of Spock and McCoy.

I would like to see Kevin O’Reilly in SNW hanging out with young Scotty. I think O’Reilly was a lieutenant in TOS. Could be an interesting dynamic similar to Bashir and O’Brien in DS9 😊

Wth is with that psycho screen cap of scotty

Scotty is Scottish because of James Doohan. He chose the Scottish accent because he believed Scots made the best engineers.

James Doohan is and always will be Scotty. He inspired many people to become engineers. He was someone not to be messed with, remember when he was in command and faced off against Klingons.

I think Simon Pegg started of as a comic relief and certainly not someone I saw as Scotty but in Beyond he had more of that Scotty charm.

Martin Quinn I think is too young but has the enthusiasm for the role. But he wouldn’t have the role if James Doohan didn’t choose make Scotty Scottish.

But fans seem to forget the legacy of TOS and it’s cast, now many suddenly are critical of cast and are happy for TOS to be rebooted.

This is not the future of Trek I envisioned.

Scotty Will Return in Season 3 of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Martin Quinn's version of the character first appeared in season 2's finale.

The Big Picture

  • Martin Quinn to bring authentic Scottish flair as Montgomery Scott on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • Quinn adds a new perspective to the character previously played by actors from Canada and England.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues to explore the adventures of the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike.

A classic member of the Enterprise crew will return for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . After debuting in the final episode of the show's second season , Martin Quinn will stay on board as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the upcoming season of Paramount+'s newest Star Trek series. As reported by BBC Scotland in an interview with Quinn, the character will recur on Strange New World 's third season, which is currently filming in Toronto, Ontario.

Quinn is the first-ever Scot to play the character, who was previously played by a Canadian ( James Doohan ) and an Englishman ( Simon Pegg ), and the interview notes that he's adding authenticity to the character, making sure that the show's writers use authentic Scottish slang: "They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid'. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it." Quinn is from the town of Paisley; he has previously appeared on episodes of Limmy's Show , Annika , and Derry Girls .

Who is Montgomery Scott?

Played by Doohan in Star Trek: The Original Series , Scott is the ever-capable head engineer of the USS Enterprise , famed for his ability to solve catastrophic problems in short periods of time. After the series went off the air, Doohan reprised the role in Star Trek: The Animated Series and in all six of the feature films starring the series' original cast. He also returned for a cameo in Star Trek: Generations , attending the launch of the USS Enterprise-B , and guest-starred on the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics", where he is discovered by the Enterprise-D 's crew a century in the future, having been preserved in a transporter buffer. Pegg took on the role for J.J. Abrams ' cinematic reboot of the franchise, and reprised it for its two sequels; a fourth film is still up in the air .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features the adventures of the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) prior to The Original Series . It has so far featured two different chief engineers. Hemmer ( Bruce Horak ) was a member of the Aenar species, and sacrificed himself in the show's first-season finale to save the rest of the crew from the Gorn. His replacement was Pelia ( Carol Kane ), a long-lived Lanthanite, who joined the crew in the show's second season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently filming its third season; no release date has yet been set . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Hasn't Even Aired Its Third Season, but It's Getting a Fourth

A couple beloved "Star Trek" shows are living ever longer and prospering on Paramount+. The streamer has renewed "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" for Season 4 - even though Season 3 hasn't even aired yet. That's how well received the first two seasons of the "Original Series" prequel starring Anson Mount as Capt. Christopher Pike have been. The series has taken big swings in episodic storytelling, such as Season 2's musical episode , "Subspace Rhapsody."

"On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds' we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together," said showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, plus franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman, in a joint statement. "We can't wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure."

Meanwhile, "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the animated comedy series set after the events of the "Next Generation" movies but before "Star Trek: Picard" and created by Mike McMahan, will receive a fifth and final season. The cartoon show had a live-action crossover episode with "Strange New Worlds." In a statement, McMahan and Kurtzman wrote the following:

To the fans,

We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it's no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true.  Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We're excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we're working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.

Finally, thank you for always being so creative and joyful, for filling convention halls and chanting "LOWER DECKS!" We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures.

TV Cancellations Photo Gallery: Series Ending In 2024 & Beyond

Renewed tv series 2024: a photo gallery.

“Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off,” they added.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy series following the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos. The crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes the voices of Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero; the bridge crew is voiced by Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman.

The series is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Executive producers include Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. Titmouse serves as the animation studio for the series which streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Latin America and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

It stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia and Babs Olusanmokun, along with special guest stars Paul Wesley and Carol Kane. The series is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Dana Horgan, Davy Perez, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of Strange New Worlds, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure,” said Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a statement.

The expanded world of Star Trek on Paramount+ also includes the fifth and final season of Star Trek : Discovery, currently airing; the original film Star Trek : Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh, which recently wrapped production; and the new original series Star Trek : Starfleet Academy, slated to begin production later this year.
