Star Trek: Picard -- trailer, cast, plot, release date and more

Patrick Stewart beams back into the world of Star Trek as Jean-Luc Picard. Here's all the latest news on the cast, plot, release date, prequels and dog.

He's coming back.

Patrick Stewart is going where no Starfleet captain has gone before: into his very own series, decades after wrapping up his original Star Trek run. He'll have a furry companion, old crew mates along for the ride and plenty of new characters to contend with.

Caution: There may be minor spoilers below.

Star Trek: Picard , a CBS All Access streaming show, will debut on Jan. 23, 2020. The show follows on the heels of Star Trek: Discovery , but the two series take place at very different points in the Trek universe. 

CBS All Access is feeling pretty confident about the show. It has already been renewed for season 2 . (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET.)

A  trailer  for Picard came out of San Diego Comic-Con  in July, and it was a surprise-packed doozy. The trailer revealed that Star Trek icons Brent Spiner (Data) and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) will appear in the new series. 

Picard will hook up with a new non-Starfleet crew in a quest to protect a mysterious woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) who comes to him for help. The Borg, one of the most imposing Star Trek villains ever created, will play a role in the plot.

Jonathan Frakes (William Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi)  will appear in Picard as their Next Generation characters. We also know Jonathan Del Arco will reprise his role as Hugh the Borg.

A teaser trailer beamed in on May 22, 2019 , shows that Jean-Luc Picard, who was promoted to admiral, led a rescue armada on a mysterious mission 15 years prior to the show's events. He then left Starfleet, leaving us to wonder what prompted his exit and why he's reappearing now. 

CBS first revealed the official Star Trek: Picard name on May 15 and posted a look at the show's logo. The Starfleet logo takes the place of the "A" in Picard. 

A Star Trek: Short Treks episode Children of Mars set up some backstory for Picard, highlighting attacks from "rogue synths" on Mars while Picard was still a Starfleet admiral. The main series should fill in the blanks here.  

NYCC drops hints

This Seven of Nine costume explainer talks about the former Borg member's changes over the years.

New York Comic Con in October 2019 quickly became a hot spot for mining new details on Picard . 

Star Trek had a booth on the convention floor stocked with costumes and a few character details related to the new show. 

A set of descriptions explaining the costuming didn't give us much news about our admiral, but one of them clued us in to what former Borg member Seven of Nine has been up to since the events of Star Trek: Voyager. 

"Seven of Nine has become more comfortable with her humanity in the intervening years," the description read, saying this is represented in her "more casual, stylish and decidedly human clothing."

We also learned the mysterious Dahj arrives at Picard's vineyard in France "with a cut on her head and a strong feeling she can trust Picard implicitly."

A pup for Picard

Stewart and CBS revealed the key art for the show on July 10, just ahead of the star's appearance at San Diego Comic-Con .

The dog, a pit bull, is particularly notable. Zoom in on its ears. They may have been cropped, but they also look a lot like pointy Vulcan ears. Stewart is known for his work fostering rescue dogs. His most recent foster, Emma, is a pit mix with cropped ears.

Stewart shared a photo of Emma along with his hidden Picard rehearsal script in April. The dog in the poster sports a Starfleet emblem tag on its collar and his name is now confirmed as "Number One." 

Revisiting Jean-Luc Picard

Stewart, who on Jan. 13 created an imprint for display at the iconic Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, has a long history with the Star Trek franchise. He first warped into the iconic role of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise with the debut of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. That means Stewart will be back in Picard's shoes more than 30 years after originating the role. He last appeared on screen as Picard in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis .

He's been plenty busy in the meantime, continuing his role as Professor X in the X-Men movies , up through a farewell performance in 2017's  Logan . He has a lot of voice acting credits to his name, including Poop in The Emoji Movie . Fans can also catch him as Bosley in a 2019 version of Charlie's Angels .

Stewart announced the new Picard series in August 2018 at the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas. He called his return "an unexpected but delightful surprise" and said he hopes "to research and experience what comforting and reforming light [Picard] might shine on these often very dark times."

Who's making Picard? 

Stewart is doubling as an executive producer along with Alex Kurtzman, the creator of Star Trek: Discovery. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon is on board as an executive producer and writer. Chabon described Picard as "the hero we need right now."

Stewart shared a behind-the-scenes photo in September 2018 from a Picard meeting where he's sitting with Chabon and other members of the show's production staff. Stewart has been involved with the writing for the show from early on.

Hanelle Culpepper will make history as the first woman to launch a new Star Trek television show. Culpepper directed the first two episodes. She has an extensive TV resume, which includes Star Trek: Discovery, The Flash and Gotham.

Frakes, who will appear as Riker in the show, has a long career as a director that includes multiple Star Trek franchise entries on both the big and small screens. He directed some episodes of the new series. Frakes posted a photo of himself with Stewart to Twitter on May 21, 2019, and tagged Star Trek on CBS.

The Picard plot

CBS and Stewart had kept pretty quiet on the details of the show's plot until the teaser and full trailer arrived. We already knew it takes place around two decades after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. 

The teaser lays out a big plot point when a voiceover says Admiral Picard commanded a rescue armada that "led us out of the darkness" 15 years before the series picks up. It asks the questions: What did it cost him and why did he leave Starfleet? That's a huge cliffhanger to contemplate ahead of the show's debut.

Both the teaser and trailer start in a vineyard, which is a callback to the final TNG television episode in 1994, All Good Things  that showed one possible future Picard working in a vineyard in France. That Picard had become an ambassador. We know the Picard in the new show was promoted to admiral at some point.

Picard's history ties strongly in with the Romulans. "Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire," Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter . 

The 2009  Star Trek  reboot movie covered the demise of the planet Romulus at the hands of an exploding star in 2387. Could this event have been the focus of Picard's rescue armada? 

The reboot movies take place in the alternate Kelvin timeline, but Picard is firmly located in the prime Star Trek timeline, in the lineage of the TV shows that came before it.

"We're in the prime timeline. Events from the Kelvin timeline impacted Picard. If you look at that movie, the destruction of Romulus was in the prime timeline," Kurtzman clarified during a Television Critics Association press event in January .

Picard has a complicated history with the Romulans. In Nemesis, he tangled with a Romulan clone of himself. 

The trailer features a Borg ship that may be acting as a prison vessel staffed by Romulans. A sign says it has gone 5,843 days without an assimilation.

Don't expect a mere reboot of The Next Generation. "Patrick was very clear to us in the beginning. He didn't want to repeat what he had already done. And by the way, it's been 20-plus years, so he couldn't possibly be that same person anymore," Kurtzman told reporters in January 2019 .

We have a lot of questions about what Picard has been up to all those years, and some of them were answered in a series of prequel books . CBS, Simon & Schuster and comics publisher IDW released Star Trek: Picard -- Countdown, a three-issue comic book miniseries in November. This focused on a life-changing mission for Picard.

A full Picard tie-in novel called The Last Best Hope is due in February 2020. Una McCormack, author of several Star Trek novels, is the author of the book.

Picard's place in Trek

Stewart's Picard took on the weight of Star Trek's future when he stepped up to captain the Enterprise-D. Until then, the Trek universe had revolved around the original crew led by Capt. James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner. Kirk and the gang had re-emerged from the shadow of the original series' cancellation in the '60s and were born again through a string of successful movies starting in 1979. 

Stewart's character couldn't have been more different from the leap-into-action, kiss-the-aliens Kirk. Picard created a new mold for Starfleet captains. His Picard was cerebral, wise and measured, but also passionate. If you need a reminder, watch his defense of android crew member Data as a sentient being in the season 2 episode Measure of a Man.

How to watch

Star Trek: Picard will debut on Jan. 23, 2020. It'll stream in the US on CBS All Access and on the Space Channel in Canada. Internationally, Amazon Prime Video will host each episode within 24 hours of the US premiere in over 200 countries and territories. That's a change from how Discovery is distributed internationally through Netflix.

Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise embark on one final adventure in space

The crew of the “U.S.S. Enterprise” reunites for one final mission in Season 3 of “Star Trek: Picard.”

It marks the first time the entire cast from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (“TNG”) — Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton and Michael Dorn — have reunited on screen since 2002’s “Star Trek Nemesis.”

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard

Now retired and residing at his family vineyard, the Starfleet admiral is called into action for one final mission after receiving a distress call from Beverly Crusher.

Aside from Picard, Stewart is best known for playing Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” movie franchise. His character recently crossed over to the MCU, appearing as a member of the Illuminati in “Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.”

Jonathan Frakes as William Riker

Picard calls upon his former first officer for assistance. Riker, no longer in command of the U.S.S. Titan and needing some time away from his family, jumps at the opportunity.

After “TNG,” Frakes appeared in numerous shows and hosted “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” He’s also a prolific director, with episodes of “Roswell,” “The Librarians,” “Star Trek: Discovery” and even “Picard” under his belt.

Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi

Troi is the former ship’s counselor and is married to Will Riker. They have a daughter, Kestra. As a half-Betazoid, she is able to read the emotions of others.

Sirtis (and Frakes) voiced lead roles in the animated series “Gargoyles.” She’s appeared in numerous shows in the U.S. and U.K. including “NCIS.” She reprised the role of Troi in Season 1 of “Picard.”

Brent Spiner as TBD

Data, the beloved android who served on board the Enterprise and perished in a battle against the Romulan warlord Shinzon. Whether Spiner is playing Data, his evil brother Lore, or some other being is to be determined.

Although his character Data was killed in “Nemesis,” Spiner has played various characters with familial connections to Data in other “Trek” series and films. He’s also known for playing Dr. Okum in the “Independence Day” films.

Michael Dorn as Worf

Worf is the former Enterprise security chief. Despite being raised by humans, his Klingon heritage imparts a strong sense of honor, particularly in battle.

After “TNG,” Dorn joined the cast of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” He’s appeared in more “Trek” shows than any other character. He’s also lent his voice talent to numerous shows.

LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge

La Forge is the former Enterprise chief engineer. He is currently running the Starfleet museum. He also has two daughters in Starfleet.

Prior to “TNG,” Burton was the beloved host of “Reading Rainbow.” There was a campaign to have him replace Alex Trebek as the host of “Jeopardy,” and he even guest-hosted. Like Frakes, Burton has directed numerous episodes of “Trek” series.

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher

Crusher is the former Enterprise chief medical officer. She lost contact with her crewmates but reaches out to them in a time of need. She and Picard had a former romantic relationship that became a close friendship.

McFadden starred in “Marker” and “Mad About You” after her stint on “TNG.” She’s also reprised the role of Dr. Crusher on “Star Trek: Prodigy.”

Jeri Ryan as Annika Hansen/Seven of Nine

After being rescued from the Borg, Seven joined the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager. She later joined the Rangers, a space vigilante group, before re-enlisting in Starfleet. She is currently the first officer on the U.S.S. Titan, where she goes by Annika Hansen, her human name before assimilation.

Ryan wasn’t a part of the “TNG” cast. She joined “Star Trek: Voyager” in 1997. Her character was extremely popular, and she reprised her role in Season 1 of “Picard.” After “Voyager” Ryan starred in “Boston Public.”

Michelle Hurd as Raffaela “Raffi” Musiker

Musiker served with Picard late in his Starfleet career but burned out. She eventually helped him root out Romulan spies. She re-enlisted in Starfleet and joined the U.S.S. Excelsior crew, but has since taken on a special mission.

Hurd is best known for playing Monique Jeffries in “Law and Order: SVU” and Ellen Briggs in “Blindspot.”

Amanda Plummer as Vadic

Very little is known about the villainous Vadic. She captains the warship Shrike and has a grudge against Picard and the Enterprise crew.

Plummer, the daughter of legendary thesp Christopher Plummer, had had a long career on stage and screen. But her most memorable role might be playing “Honey Bunny,” one of the restaurant robbers in “Pulp Fiction.”

Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Sidney La Forge

La Forge is the eldest daughter of Geordi La Forge and the helmsman on the U.S.S. Titan.

Chestnut has had recurring roles in “Rap Sh!t” and “NCIS: Los Angeles.”

Todd Stashwick as Liam Shaw

Shaw is the no-nonsense captain of the U.S.S. Titan. He took over command from Will Riker. He previously served on the U.S.S. Constance, one of 40 ships destroyed in the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg and an assimilated Picard.

Stashwick is no stranger to the “Trek” universe, having appeared in “Star Trek: Enterprise” as Talok. He appeared in the sci-fi show “12 Monkeys” from 2016-18.

Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher

Speleers’ character is the son of Beverly Crusher and Jean-Luc Picard. He never knew his father while growing up.

Speleers played the title role in the fantasy film “Eragon,” and had a memorable stint playing Jimmy the handsome footman on “Downton Abbey.”

Michelle Forbes as Ro Laren

Ro served aboard the Enterprise as an ensign before defecting to the Maquis. She is back with Starfleet working in the Intelligence division. She is sent to interrogate Picard and Riker for treason.

Forbes previously appeared on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

Mica Burton as Ensign Alandra La Forge

Alandra is the youngest daughter of Geordi La Forge who works with her father at the fleet museum. She has an interest in engineering.

Burton is the real-life daughter of castmember LeVar Burton.

Daniel Davis as Moriarty

Moriarity was a hologram created to be a foil to Data’s Sherlock Holmes. He gained sentience and outwitted the Enterprise crew. Eventually, he was placed in a memory module to continue running but appears to have escaped his program.

Davis is best known for playing Niles, the sharp-tongued butler on “The Nanny.”

Tim Russ as Tuvok (doppleganger)

Tuvok was the former security officer aboard the U.S.S. Voyager. Seven of Nine turns to her former crewmate for information about the kidnapped Captain Riker.

Elizabeth Dennehy as Elizabeth Shelby

Admiral Shelby is the commander-in-chief of the U.S.S. Enterprise F during the Frontier Day celebration. She previously served aboard the Enterprise D during the Federation’s earlier encounter with The Borg.

Star Trek: Picard cast reminisce on The Next Generation and reuniting for final season

Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, and more reunite in EW's New York Comic Con suite.

When the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation get together, it's like no time has passed. That's probably because they still hang out. "We actually like each other," Marina Sirtis remarks in EW's New York Comic Con video suite. "I know it's a weird concept in Hollywood, but we actually get on."

"The night in Gates' bathroom. We were all there," Patrick Stewart mysteriously adds, referring to another one of his costars, Gates McFadden .

Sadly, we didn't get more details on what, exactly, was happening in said bathroom. "We'll talk about that another time," says McFadden.

Ahead of the Con's big Star Trek universe panel, Stewart, Sirtis, and McFadden joined Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, and Michael Dorn for a sit-down with EW. That's a lot of star power for a 10-minute chat and plenty is covered: the first scenes they filmed for the show, Stewart's initial hesitance to play Jean-Luc Picard, and reuniting on screen for the third and final season of Picard , premiering on Paramount+ this Feb. 16.

How did the stars align for their Picard team-up? "They threw money at us," Sirtis says.

Frakes had been directing episodes of Picard , in addition to appearing as his character William Riker, when the producers asked him if his "old friends" would be willing to make a return together.

"It was a call just kind of out of the blue," Dorn adds. "They said, 'Would you like to do it?' And I think all of us said, 'OK.' And then they talked to us about the part, our characters, and everything, and that's kind of how it happened."

After the interview, Paramount+ revealed a full-length trailer at the New York Comic Con panel that confirmed Spiner will be portraying the character Lore and the cast's fellow Next Generation actor Daniel Davis will be reprising his role as Professor Moriarty.

Star Trek: Picard Cast - Every Actor & Character in Season 3

The third and final season of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard pulled out all the stops and brought in a plethora of new and established characters from the Star Trek franchise.

The first two seasons of Picard , while decently well-rated among the general audience, were somewhat unpopular with longtime Trek fans. Initially, the show chose to focus on   Patrick Stewart 's Jean-Luc Picard as a retired Starfleet admiral surrounded by a cast of newcomers.

So, with not many episodes remaining in the series, here’s a look at each principal and supporting character in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, barring any surprise guests in the concluding installments.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Cast and Character List

1.) patrick stewart as jean-luc picard.

Sir Patrick Stewart Leads the series as the venerable Admiral Jean-Luc Picard.

Upon receiving an encrypted distress call from Dr. Crusher at the top of the season, Jean-Luc launches back into action and follows the coordinates that Beverly left for him.

Roping in his old friend and colleague Will Riker, the pair wind up on the USS Titan-A where much of the season’s action has so far taken place.

2.) Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker

Captain William T. Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes), Jean-Luc’s Number One back in their days serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise, jumps at the chance to assist the admiral on his rescue mission.

It was established in Season 1 that Will and his wife Deanna Troi have had a daughter, Kestra, in the intervening years between the show and their appearance in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. They also had a son named Thad who was tragically lost to a then-incurable disease long prior to the events of Picard . Riker is still having difficulty processing his grief when audiences pick up with him in the third season.

3.) Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher

Former chief Medical officer on board the Enteprise-D and Enterprise-E during the Next Gen -era of Star Trek, it’s quickly established in Picard that Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher hasn’t seen or contacted any of her old friends in over 20 years, Jean-Luc included.

In the series, Dr. Crusher has been acting as a sort of spacefaring member of Doctors Without Borders, but she’s been harboring a huge secret from Admiral Picard: Their 23-year-old son Jack.

4.) Michael Dorn as Worf

Worf, son of Mogh, House of Martok, son of Sergei, House of Rozhenko, Bane to the Duras Family. The noble Klingon officer, portrayed by Micheal Dorn, is a man of many names.

In Star Trek: Picard , Worf has been acting on behalf of Starfleet Intelligence, as Raffi Musiker’s handler, as she infiltrates the criminal underworld in search of stolen secrets. Raffi and Worf are eventually forced to team up on their shared mission, which sets them on a collision course with their mutual friend and former commanding officer Jean-Luc Picard.

5.) LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge

In the time since Nemesis , LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge settled down and become a family man with a wife and two daughters. Because of this, he’s initially unwilling to get dragged back into the adventure.  He has also risen to the rank of commodore and has been heading up the Fleet Museum, in orbit over Athan Prime.

When Jean-Luc and company arrive at his doorstep, they’re met with a slightly grouchier La Forge than fans are used to, but he quickly drops his guard to become his friendly, affable self again after being reminded how important his old Starfleet crew is to him.

6.) Brent Spiner as Data/Lore/Altan Soong

Brent Spiner gives one of his traditional multifaceted performances in the series as he portrays android brothers Data and Lore, who have both been uploaded into an advanced, flesh-and-blood positronic body. Lore, being Lore, is constantly trying to exert control over the good-natured Data in order to wreak havoc.

Spiner also portrays Altan Soong, son of Dr. Noonien Soong, in a holographic recording from Episode 6.

7.) Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi

The empathic, half-Betazoid Deanna Toi (brought to life by Marina Sirtis) hasn’t had a major role in the bulk of Season 3, but showrunner Terry Matalas has sung Sirtis’ praises on Twitter, indicating a larger part for the actress to play during the show’s final episodes.

8.) Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine

Jeri Ryan's Seven, now Commander Seven, is first officer of the USS Titan-A when the third season opens. Unlike most of the other characters in Season 3, Ryan has appeared as the ex-Borg and former Voyager crewmember in the previous two seasons as well.

9.) Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker

A longtime confidant to Jean-Luc, Michelle Hurd's Raffi Musiker starts the season as a deep-cover Starfleet intelligence officer, tasked with investigating the theft of highly dangerous items from the Daystrom Institute. When criminals use the stolen tech to commit a heinous crime, Raffi gets in over her head in pursuit.

10.) Todd Stashwick as Liam Shaw

A self-described “dipsh*t from Chicago” , the captain of the Titan-A, Todd Stashwick's Liam Shaw, has a definite chip on his shoulder. Despite his somewhat mean-spirited nature, Shaw quickly became a fan favorite and has proven his worth as a valuable ally to Jean-Luc and co.

11.) Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher

The charming, roguish son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, Jack Crusher (played by Ed Speleers) seems to have inherited all the best qualities from his legendary parents. One of the season’s most central mysteries is Jack’s mysterious affliction, which has drawn the villain Vadic to him. 

12.) Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Sidney La Forge

One of Geordi La Forge’s two daughters, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut's Sidney La Forge sits at the helm of the Titan-A as the ship’s pilot. During her days at Starfleet Academy, she earned herself the nickname “Crash La Forge” due to her propensity for wrecking shuttles.

13.) Mica Burton as Alandra La Forge

Geordi’s other daughter Alandra La Forge (played by Mica Burton) hasn’t seen as much screen as her sister due to her not entering the series until Epsiode 6, but she holds the special distinction of being played by Le Var Burton’s real-life daughter. The elder Burton has spoken on how much of a privilege it was to work alongside his talented kid.

14.) Orla Brady as Laris

Orla Brady's Laris, aka Jean-Luc’s Romulan girlfriend and housekeeper back at his vineyard on Earth, is actually a former agent of the Tal Shiar. But one would never know it due to the character’s gentle, caring nature. Brady has only appeared in one episode this season as Laris but she also cropped up in Picard ’s first two seasons as well.

15.) Michelle Forbes as Ro Laren

Before guest starring on Star Trek: Picard , Michelle Forbes' Ro Laren was last seen joining up with the Maquis in The Next Generation ’s penultimate episode, “Preemptive Strike.” It’s revealed in Season 3 that Laren’s betrayal broke Jean-Luc’s heart, but the two were ultimately able to mend old wounds.

16.) Daniel Davis as Moriarty

Sherlock Holmes’ arch-enemy Moriarty (played by Daniel Davis in the series) was originally brought to life as a holodeck character on Next Gen when Geordi tasked the computer with creating an adversary capable of matching wits with Data for their reenactment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. Davis made a brief appearance in Picard Episode 6 as Daystrom Station’s security hologram.

17.) Tim Russ as “Tuvok”

Episode 7’s cold open brought back fan-favorite Star Trek: Voyager character, Tim Russ' Tuvok. It appeared that the Vulcan former chief of security was now a captain, but things were not as they seemed. This Tuvok was actually a Changeling in disguise, attempting to lure the crew of the Titan-A into a trap.

18.) Amanda Plummer as Vadic

The mysterious Changeling captain of a warship known as the Shrike, Vadic (played by Amanda Plummer) will stop at nothing to get what she wants. And what she wants, for some yet-to-be-revealed reason, is Jack Crusher. She’s also played by the daughter of late Hollywood veteran Christopher Plummer, who, among other roles, portrayed General Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991.

It’s fitting that father and daughter would play the antagonists in the send-offs for both the crews of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation .

A Generation’s Final Voyage?

Star Trek: Picard ’s third and final season is billed as a grand send-off to Jean-Luc Picard and his old crew, but the story doesn’t necessarily have to end here.

Patrick Stewart has gone on record as saying he might be interested in reprising his character in another Star Trek movie. And what’s more, executive producer Terry Matalas has been garnering interest in a follow-up series that he’d like to make.

In his words, that show would be called Star Trek: Legacy and would be set in the same early-25 century time period as Picard , even using certain characters from the soon-to-end show.

Whether or not Star Trek: Legacy gets made is another story but fan support helps a great deal. Matalas has stated that more viewers watching and discussing Picard and making noise about a follow-up will only help increase chances.

Michael Dorn Wanted Armin Shimerman To Play The Ferengi That Worf Killed In Star Trek Picard

Earlier this week, TrekMovie’s All Access Star Trek podcast team spoke to  Star Trek: Deep Nine Star  Armin Shimerman along with his wife (and DS9) guest star Kitty Swink, TNG vet Jonathan Frakes, and television writer/producer Juan Carlos Coto, brother of late Enterprise  writer/producer Manny Coto. They had all gathered together to talk about the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and their team Trek Against Pancreatic Cancer for the Purple Stride walk this Saturday, April 27th. During the wide-ranging chat, Shimerman told a funny story about a suggestion for him to appear in the final season of  Picard .

Armin says no to Worf chopping off his head

The subject of how other actors have played Ferengi in some of the new Star Trek shows came up, including the character Sneed in the latest season of Star Trek: Picard . Armin Shimerman had nothing but “kudos” for actor Aaron Stanford, who played Sneed:

“I was in awe. It was just astounding.”

Kitty Swink then prompted her husband to tell the “Dorny story.” Armin obliged, retelling this conversation he had with his former DS9 co-star:

“Before they cast [Sneed], [Michael] Dorn me up and said ‘I’m doing an episode of Picard where I kill off a Ferengi? Wouldn’t it be great if it were you.’ [laughs] I said, ‘No, it would not be great.’ I told him to just forget about that idea, altogether.”

TrekMovie confirmed with Swink and Shimerman that Dorn was suggesting Armin play Sneed on Picard , not that he reprise his DS9 role as Quark. After others noted the scene was rather brutal—it involved Worf cutting Sneed’s head off, Swink jumped in again:

“I got to say, for all the times I have baked bread for Michael Dorn, that was really a shitty thing for him to say.” [laughs]

Jonathan Frakes tried to be diplomatic, suggesting Dorn might have not known Worf was going to cut off Sneed’s head, but Armin said Michael was at least sure Worf was going to kill the character. Frakes (who appeared in every episode of Picard season 3 and directed 2 episodes) noted Sneed was still somewhat based on Quark, complimenting Shimerman on the layers he brought to a previously unsympathetic species:

“The tightrope you walked—all levity aside—to represent what [Gene] Roddenberry thought of as this despicable capitalist pig with huge ears. And yet the humorous, smart, charming, cleve—all the qualities that Quark had and still be an essentially a villain, and do it through rubber. It takes a special actor, which you are.”

High praise for return on Lower Decks

Shimerman has had a recent return to the franchise, voicing Quark for the season 3 episode “Hear All, Trust Nothing” of Star Trek: Lower Decks . During the podcast discussion, the actor talked up his experience:

“I did have fun, and I did get to ad lib. It was a great, great, great fun. And they couldn’t have been nicer. They were very sweet. And both Nana [Visitor] and I were very touched that they wanted to make it a tribute to Deep Space Nine . The opening sequence of shooting the station brought tears to both of our eyes because it was just so nostalgic. And we love working there. It was a it was a great, great experience. It couldn’t have been nicer.”

I think that would have been one of the most divisive moments in Trek history had it happened.

Agreed. They could have called that Ferengi ANYTHING but as soon as Worf’s blade went through his neck, it would’ve been “Worf killed Quark!” and I don’t think I could have ever forgiven him (Worf or Dorn).

I think it would have been cool. It’s not Dorn killing Shimerman, it’s Worf killing Sneed. People are being real weenies about this.

It has to be a joke. Seriously.

My recommendation would be no one listen to Michael Dorn regarding casting and plot ideas.

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times.

Dorn had mentioned to Shimmerman in jest. I do not believe he was serious about having Worf do that. The two are friends in real life – it was just a joke between the two. Dorn never suggested it to the scriptwriter or director. Don’t read too much into it.

I know I’m about to be verbally pummeled, but is there that much adoration for Quark out there? I wouldn’t have minded him having a cameo to be killed off, ala Shelby. Just imo, I don’t feel a great affinity for the character. No shade on Armin Shimerman either, by the way. He played the role to a tee.

I liked Quark, but I feel that having any main character killed off in such a fashion would be a bit shitty. Shelby only appeared in two episodes (even if the character was featured in the books more), so it would be a bit different for the fans. Just think back to the way fans reacted to the deaths of Jadzia or Trip, and they at least died in their own shows.

I can dig that. It would have certainly been an emotional punch. It did suck quite a bit when Jadzia left us.

I like Quark as much as any Star Trek character but it really has nothing to do with that. Having any character show up and do something the audience KNOWS they wouldn’t so you can generate a cameo out of it is sooooooooo lazy and apathetic about the world they’ve built. This is the kind of thing new star trek does a little too much. I’m not against writing a character out….I’m against things that suck and that would’ve.

Yes, well put. And part of the reason I asked that was exactly because I would expect that from these showrunners, kill off a main legacy character simply because they can. It is totally lazy if it’s simply done ‘just because.’

Quark is one of the most popular characters of the 1990s-era Star Trek.

Quark and Worf were on DS9 together for years and never seemed to have any serious beef. Worf was very conscientious; Quark was an okay guy for a Ferengi, not one of the really scummy ones. So what exactly would precipitate Worf to lop Quark’s head off, that wouldn’t mangle one character or the other?

Quark is the classic anti-hero. Sure he plays the villain but in the end, he always manages to do the right thing. And in TOS and TNG everyone is beyond good. Quark was the first main Trek character to be dubious. Those are just a few reasons why he is so beloved.

I prefer Sneed. He was an interesting character. I don’t want to see Quark beheaded. Luckily, they didn’t go that route.

Sneed seemed more like Roddenberry’s original intent for the Ferengi. Too bad he was barely on screen, he was a fantastic villain, probably the best of the series.

Anybody read above? Nobody was going to kill Quark, Armin would have been playing Sneed. So, uh what??

I caught that, but as you can see, many, many, many folks would simply see/read “Worf killed Quark” and go to town on it.

Nobody would have been fooled. “That’s Quark using a false name!’

Yes, I caught that he was joking.

I love Dorn as Worf and he’s one of the few old characters I want to see more of, but what a lousy idea! There would have to be a LOT of backstory to explain to us why Worf would ever kill some guy he knew back in the day on Deep Space Nine and never seem to have issues with. For a Ferengi, Quark was a pretty okay guy. What could he possibly do to make Worf so angry at him?

Totally rewatching that ep now!

It’s interesting to see other sites blowing this up as if Armin formally “turned down” an offer from Picard’s casting director to play Sneed. From what I’m reading here, it was just a side conversation between two friends – and that was as far as it went.
