What to watch to prepare for star trek: picard.

The latest entry to the Star Trek universe - the new Star Trek: Picard series - debuts 23 January on CBS All Access in the US and Prime Video in the UK.

The latest entry to the Star Trek universe - the new Star Trek: Picard series - just debuted on CBS All Access in the US and Prime Video in the UK.

It sees Patrick Stewart return as Jean Luc Picard, one of the most beloved captains in Star Trek. The new series focuses on a retired Picard, who now owns a winery and is enjoying his break from Starfleet, but it’s not long before adventure calls, and he must return to the stars.

Stewart last played Picard in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis. But, 15 years before that, he had been the captain of the Enterprise for 178 episodes in Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as in four feature films that he helmed. So, if you want to catch up on all-things Picard before diving into the new CBS All Access series, we think you might have trouble finding the time.

There are hundreds of hours of Picard-centric content you can binge - and that’s without getting into the other characters and plotlines that are likely to surface in Star Trek: Picard. To help you get ready as quickly as possible, we've rounded up a list of episodes from The Next Generation and Voyager, plus a few films, which should cover everything you need to see.

What to watch before Star Trek: Picard

NOTE: THERE ARE SPOILERS.

We recommend watching the episodes and movies below, in this order. To avoid any spoilers, jump to the bottom for our bulleted list version.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Battle

  • Season 1 Episode 9

This TNG episode sees the Enterprise pay for a decision made by Captain Picard nine years earlier - when he was in command of the Federation ship Stargazer. They were attacked by an unknown ship. Picard survived the encounter, however, thanks to the first use of what became the Picard Maneuver. This episode hints at Picard’s past and focuses on what makes him unique as a captain.

Star Trek The Next Generation Complete

Star trek: the next generation - the measure of a man.

  • Season 2 Episode 9

Picard and his old friend Data (Brent Spiner) might reunite soon - if the trailers for Star Trek: Picard are any indication - making this TNG episode a must-watch. In it, we meet a cyberneticist who wishes to deconstruct Lt Commander Data to see how his positronic brain functions. When Data doesn’t want to undergo the procedure, which could wipe his entire memory, the cyberneticist attempts to have the Federation compel Data, arguing he is the Federation’s property. The ensuing conflict sees a sci-fi courtroom drama take place, with Captain Picard representing Data for the right to have control over his own body.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Best of Both Worlds

  • Season 3 Episode 26
  • Season 4 Episode 1

The Borg is one of the most terrifying villains in Star Trek, and they return in some form for the new Picard series, which is why we’re including this two-parter, which ranks up there with the greatest episodes in any Star Trek series.

The Enterprise responds to a distress signal from a Federation colony only to find everyone in the colony has disappeared. It’s discovered that the Borg, a hive mind that forces all life it meets to assimilate under its control, is responsible for their disappearance. When another Starfleet vessel is attacked by a Borg Cube, the Enterprise heads off to face them, beginning an encounter that will have a lasting impact on Picard.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Family

  • Season 4 Episode 2

Following the battle with the Borg, the Enterprise is docked near Earth to undergo repairs, allowing Picard to return to his family home to see his brother, Robert, who’s running the family’s vineyard. This episode gives us an early glimpse at what we think Picard will be doing at the opening of the new CBS All Access series - running a vineyard - but this episode is important because we see Picard struggling with the horrible things he was forced to do while he was assimilated. He even reveals that he’s considering leaving Starfleet for a position that will keep him on Earth.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - I, Borg

  • Season 5 Episode 23

This TNG episode sees the Enterprise discover a wrecked Borg ship with only one survivor, a Borg Drone initially called Three of Five (Jonathan Del Arco). There’s two main reasons to watch this episode. For one, we see Picard still struggling with his hatred for what the Borg did to him while he was assimilated. The normally cool and moralistic Captain spends the episode considering using the recovered Borg as a weapon that could destroy the entire Borg Collective. The second reason for watching this episode is that the recovered Borg drone - which ends up showing signs of its own individualism returning by taking the name Hugh - is slated to appear in Star Trek: Picard.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Gambit Part I and II

  • Season 7 Episode 4
  • Season 7 Episode 5

This two-parter from the final season of TNG shows the relationship between Captain Picard and one of his most trusted friends - who’s also confirmed to appear in Star Trek: Picard - William Riker (played by Jonathan Frakes). While searching for a missing Picard, Riker is abducted by a group of mercenaries. When among them, he finds that Picard is actually another captive, and together, the two of them must formulate a plan to escape from their captors with an ancient Vulcan weapon.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - All Good Things

  • Season 7 Episodes 25
  • Season 7 Episodes 26

The series finale to TNG is particularly interesting because we get a glimpse at the future leading up to Star Trek: Picard. In the finale, Picard finds himself jumping between the present and two different points in time: Seven years in the past, right before the events of the series' first episode, and 25 years into the future when he’s retired to a vineyard, or when Star Trek: Picard is expected to begin.

Star Trek: Voyager - The Scorpion

This isn’t an episode from The Next Generation, and there’s no Picard, but it's still worth watching during your catch-up because it shows the debut of another important character who is featured prominently in the trailers for the new Picard series: Seven of Nine (played by Jeri Ryan).

In this episode, while journeying home, The Voyager is forced to travel through a section of space controlled by the Borg, but in the process, it ends up in a middle of an ongoing war between the Borg and an alien species the Borg calls Species 8472. In order to make it through the area, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) decides to ally with the Borg, accepting Seven onto the ship in the process.

Star Trek: Voyager - Seasons 1 - 7

Star trek: voyager - endgame.

The original Endgame! This two-part series finale of Star Trek: Voyager sets off events that will surely affect the world of Star Trek: Picard.

An older Captain Kathryn Janeway is seen celebrating the 10th anniversary of Voyager finally coming back to Earth when she devises a plan to return to the past and help the Voyager make it home 16 years faster. But she sets off an encounter with the Borg Collective that should’ve left the hive mind devastated. We should get our first look at what the Borg look like, following the events of this episode, in Star Trek: Picard.

  • Star Trek: Short Treks - Children of Mars

CBS All Access has a 12-episode anthology series of short Star Trek stories, and the most recent episode appears to show a key event that happens just before the events of Star Trek: Picard. The 10-minute episode shows an attack by a group of rogue synths on Mars through the eyes of two teen girls on Earth whose parents both work on Mars. At the end, we can see a picture of Picard on the news.

  • Star Trek: First Contact (1996)

First Contact is considered one of the best Star Trek films, which makes it worth a rewatch ahead of Star Trek: Picard. But the real reason it’s worth firing up this film is that it shows Picard still struggling with the time he spent assimilated to the Borg six years earlier. He’s forced to confront these feelings head-on when he must travel back in time to prevent the Borg from changing the past and assimilating all of Earth.

star trek: first contact

  • Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

The final Star Trek film featuring Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard sees him face off with a clone of himself, played by an extremely young Tom Hardy. While the film wasn’t exactly an Oscar contender, it does have important details that will have an impact on the events of Star Trek: Picard, such as Lt Commander Data’s death near the end and the reveal that he transferred some of himself into B-4, an android similar to Data himself. There’s also the fact that the Romulans create the clone Picard must stop, which could also factor into the events of the new series.

Star Trek X: Nemesis

  • Star Trek (2009)

The latest Star Trek films from JJ Abrams operate on a completely different timeline from Star Trek: Picard and The Next Generation series. However, there’s one key event that triggers the split timelines and might be the reason Picard leaves Starfleet, and that is the destruction of Romulan by a star going supernova. While Star Trek only shows the effects of that - in terms of a Romulan who survived and heads back in time to seek vengeance on Spock -  Star Trek: Picard should give us our first glimpse at the universe following the dissolution of the Romulan Empire.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 2, Episode 4 Recap: Who’s That Bartender?

This week brought a character with a deep history in the “Star Trek” universe. So it seemed odd that she was almost totally unrecognizable.

star trek picard season 2 list of episodes

By Sopan Deb

Season 2, Episode 4: ‘Watcher’

The first half of the premiere season of “Picard” started off with a strong premise. The latter half of the season was where the storytelling began to get off track. There were clumsy plot decisions that seemed designed to justify earlier ones, at the expense of making sense on their own.

After the fourth episode of the second season, I fear we might be headed down a similar path.

Mostly, I had trouble getting past Young Guinan.

Let’s posit some things: Let’s accept that Q somehow has changed the timeline so that it makes sense that Guinan would not recognize Picard in 2024. (This despite Guinan having met Picard in one of the most well known “Trek” episodes, “Time’s Arrow,” already in the 19th century.) Or that this is part of a different timeline , such as the one established by J.J. Abrams’s “Star Trek” in 2009.

I’m not quite sure how this would happen, but timeline plots are always fuzzy. And one can suspend disbelief if the storytelling is good enough. There’s also Guinan’s history with Q, which goes unaddressed here.

The Young Guinan that is presented to Picard here is a totally different Guinan than the one we’ve seen for decades in “The Next Generation,” to the point that it was a total distraction. Why would Guinan, who immediately realized something was off in the classic episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” not realize something was amiss in this timeline? El-Aurians have a special intuition, we’ve been told. They’re known as “listeners” and Guinan wants to do none of that here.

There’s also Young Guinan’s defeatism. In this timeline, Guinan is pessimistic, bitter and unwilling to help Picard until much later. Historically, that hasn’t been Guinan’s jam. She’s thoughtful, reserved — even mysterious.

Given Whoopi Goldberg’s schedule, the show was probably unlikely to get her to reprise the role beyond the one cameo she had a few weeks ago. But she has played an iconic role in “Trek” lore — to completely shift what has made the character so beloved over several decades felt rushed and unearned.

Right from their first conversation, when Young Guinan tells Picard, “I don’t know you. I don’t want to know you,” it was clear that we weren’t dealing with the same friendly bartender we’ve come to know. That she would threaten a polite, well-meaning Picard with a gun was even more surprising. She even calls Picard “old man,” which was an especially strange line, given that Guinan is significantly older by hundreds of years, something she references herself later in the episode.

Even getting to Young Guinan is a journey in itself. As the episode begins, we follow Seven and Raffi’s quest to find Rios and encounter more unmistakable political commentary. Deportations without due process. A government bureaucracy hostile to immigrants. (There’s a point where a doctor references Immigrations and Customs Enforcement holding detainees longer than they should, and Seven suggests that the government is deserving of a subtle comparison to the Borg.)

Picard goes with Jurati to visit Chateau Picard. We learn that Picard's ancestors, during World War II, hid from the Nazis in the tunnels below the residence, and that the residence itself was used as a base for the Nazis. It’s an interesting bit of back story to introduce for Picard’s lineage and will hopefully get explored more in the — ahem — future.

Here Picard deduces that Jurati has a sudden particular fascination within the number 15. (Fun reference here: Jurati says, “Look at you, Dixon Hill,” a callback to a fictional detective that Picard used to play on the holodeck with Guinan .) Picard is likely more attuned to these signs anyway, as a result of what he went through on the “Next Generation” episode, “Cause and Effect,” when Data realizes the repetition of the number three had relevance in preventing a catastrophe and bringing Kelsey Grammer into the “Trek” universe .

The most fun reference of the episode — and possibly the whole series — comes when Seven and Raffi are riding the bus and a man with spiked hair is playing a boombox at an unreasonably loud volume. Seven demands he stops and the guy apologizes — a different outcome to the same scenario in “The Voyage Home,” when Spock neck-pinches a similar guy .

Later, Seven and Raffi give “Trek” fans one of the first car chases in the history of the franchise. ( Remember the one with Picard driving in “Nemesis”? OK, never mind.) I have no idea how Seven was able to drive a car so well, but then again, Scotty once was able to come up with transparent aluminum on the fly on a 1980s Macintosh .

The Borg Queen tries her best to manipulate Jurati, which makes sense. Jurati, as brilliant as she is, is the crew member who is most susceptible to mind games. (Note that she murdered someone in the first season, partially as a result of manipulation.) This seems to be a developing plotline this season: Will Jurati succumb to the temptations of the Borg, where she doesn’t need to be emotionally in touch with herself? Where she can focus on being ruthlessly efficient?

Jurati’s coordinates lead Picard to Guinan In Name Only, who is upset by the privileged few holding much of the world’s resources and “killing the planet,” she says. She is on her way to leave Earth until Picard talks her out of it.

When Guinan asks Picard his name, he responds, “If I say more, I risk compromising your path.”

“You might’ve thought of that before you started harassing me in my bar,” Guinan retorts. This is a fair point. Picard knows Guinan has (had?) special abilities. Why tell her some things and not others? He’s compromising her path regardless, and he also did so in “Time’s Arrow.”

As has sometimes happened in “Picard,” the plotting here completely disregards the character histories. Guinan tells Picard that as a dark-skinned being, she doesn’t have the luxury of being patient with humankind, another unsubtle comment on the world we live in. (It felt a bit forced here.)

Seven and Rafi are able to be transported out of the car to save Rios. The poor police officer, who might be wearing a body cam, is shocked by her suspects disappearing out of thin air. (The revelation that aliens can teleport will surely cause a stir on Earth.)

Finally, after more clamoring, Young Guinan finally agrees to take Picard to a face-to-face meeting with The Watcher, who ends up being Laris. Plot twist!

Ultimately, this episode left me feeling shortchanged. It was disappointing that Guinan’s entire purpose ended up being to set up Picard with The Watcher, after an entire episode of her resisting Picard’s entreaties — especially given her history with Picard. That bartender in 2024 could’ve been anyone.

It certainly wasn’t Guinan.

'Star Trek: Picard' season 2 episode 2 continues to enthrall with dark timeline

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Picard" season 2, episode 2

What an incredible week it's been, sci-fi fans. Paramount Plus dropped the first official teaser trailer for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" and, by a coincidence of galactic proportions, Disney dropped a teaser trailer for "Obi-Wan Kenobi," the latest "Star Wars" live-action spin-off.

Plus of course we get new episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard," with Picard's episode 2 entitled "Penance." What a time to be alive. (If you need a refresher on season 1, check out our Star Trek: Picard streaming guide to catch up.)

In other news, principal photography has wrapped on Season 3 of Picard as confirmed by Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine). We can't help but wonder if those lavish (expensive) USS Stargazer sets were built just for Picard or will they be utilized in the rumored spin-off show that may, or may not, feature Seven, Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) and others? Ryan's tweet did feel a little blasé considering the third season of "Picard" is the last.

As "Penance" begins, the recap for the first episode reminds just how amazing it was and we pick up almost straightaway, with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) struggling somewhat in his new surroundings that are both familiar and different after Q (John de Lancie) did his finger-clicking-thing. The Château is still there, but it's not the same. When Picard asks what's happened to the crew of the USS Stargazer, Q gives an intriguing answer and references both "The Next Generation" episode " Yesterday's Enterprise " (S03, E15) and the epic "Enterprise" episode " In a Mirror, Darkly ," which is all a bit meta for " Star Trek " since he actually refers to them by name.

Naturally, Picard is in a state of shock; after all it's been over 30 years since he last saw the irksome entity in the two-part series finale of "The Next Generation" entitled "All Good Things" (S07, E25 & 26). The banter between the two has been dialed up considerably, this isn't the squeaky-clean mid 90s version of "Star Trek" after all; Jean-Luc is understandably angry at Q's interference and he's too old and too tired to play games. But Q himself is more riled up than usual and it makes for a thrilling battle of wits and the onscreen chemistry between Stewart and de Lancie is better than ever. Their war of words even comes to blows for the first time ever and Picard begins to suspect that the entity is perhaps not in the best mental health.

If a picture could speak a thousands words. Jean-Luc Picard looks genuinely horrified…and afraid

The rogue representative of the Q Continuum leads Picard in a tour of the alt-château and the study is now a trophy room, full of mounted skulls from various alien races that have been murdered by the Picard of this reality. He whispers the names on the plaques in horror and one is Gul Dukat who, according to Q, was "executed in the Ithian Forests after a hell of a fight to take the Cardassian capital" and apparently the reason for Picard's golem body in this timeline. Others include General Martok , killed in combat after a bioengineered virus decimated Qo'noS and Sarek , beheaded on the steps of the Vulcan Science Academy in front of his wife and son.

All were killed by the same "withering" hand, the most ruthless and bloodthirsty general of the Confederation of Earth: Picard himself. It's not quite the Mirror Universe, but it could be and so far it's just as good. Before Picard can make sense of it all, Q has disappeared and a synthetic servant named Harvey (played by Alex Diehl, who also played the synthetic F8 in the Season 1 episode " Maps and Legends ") enters, but poor Picard doesn't have a clue what's going on. Roll opening credits.

Seven catches herself in the mirror and sees her Borg implants have gone…but worse, she's married!

We return to the alt-château and as the camera pans around the room we see that every item has been replaced by something similar, but different. Despondent, Picard attempts to catch up with history as he watches recordings of speeches he has apparently made, together with newsreels and such like. We then cut to see Seven beginning her morning routine, still half-asleep and oblivious of anything different, that is until she looks in the mirror to see her Borg implants are gone. She performs a series of cognitive checks on herself — which is a great touch — solving a basic mathematical equation that she writes with lipstick on the bathroom mirror, confirming her sense of smell and touch and so on. She is still in shock when synth servants enter her room to help prepare her for the day and addresses her as "Madam President," which naturally just adds to her confusion.

Related: 'Star Trek: Picard' season 2 opens with a phenomenal first episode

Despite all of this, she manages to bluff her way through the morning. Presented with a report from the Vulcan front, she sees that Cristóbal Rios is listed as a colonel in that conflict and requests a secure comms channel. Rios himself is in the middle of a skirmish with the Vulcan defense fleet, equally as confused and disorientated. Seven begins to speak in a deliberately vague manner asking him to speak freely about anything "out of the ordinary" and when he refers to her as "Seven," it's clear to both that they're in the same bizarre predicament. Seven is naturally relived and asks if he has any clue what's happening, since her last memory was the activation of the auto-destruct on the Stargazer. She recalls him back to Earth immediately on "presidential authority."

One by one, we see that each member of the crew of La Sirena appear to have also been transported into this nightmare world. That said, both Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Elnor (Evan Evagora) who find themselves in Okinawa, Japan in this alt-reality, weren't onboard the USS Stargazer when the Borg Queen attacked; they were on the USS Excelsior. Clearly, Q isn't intent on breaking up the band. However, Elnor appears to be a wanted terrorist and Raffi is an officer in the Confederation security forces, fortunately for the former Qowat Milat warrior-turned-Starfleet cadet.

Back at Confederation HQ in San Francisco, Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) is also struggling to comprehend exactly what's going on. However, Seven seems to be getting a handle on everything so she — and her entourage — pay a visit to the good doctor's laboratory…where they discover, to their horror, they have a disembodied Borg Queen (Annie Wersching) being stored in a stasis cell. Disconnected from the hive mind, she rambles incoherently, mentioning something about chronological misalignment, but she still recognizes Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01 – Seven.

Turns out that the war-loving, all-conquering Confederation has all but wiped out the Borg. Obviously this causes some interesting back and forth dialogue later between the Queen and Seven, but it also raises an interesting counterpoint that hopefully will get explored a little more later. While the Confederation is obviously evil and the timeline needs to be corrected to prevent this catastrophe from unfolding in the Alpha Quadrant, but…if the Borg has indeed been defeated, how many worlds in other parts of the galaxy would've been saved?

The whole team begins to converge now at the Confederation HQ, since it's Eradication Day. The full meaning of exactly what that is isn't explored, but it doesn't need to be. Thankfully, the writers aren't bogging us down with excessive exposition and the dialogue and action are perfectly paced with all we need to know to keep us glued to our televisions, perched on the edge of our seats. Whatever the history of Eradication Day is, it doesn't matter, as the Fab Five must figure out a way to get the hell out of there and up to Rios, waiting in orbit on La Sirena.

Production designer Dave Blass posted a list of all the Starships that confronted the Borg subspace rift

 — Could we really build Star Trek's USS Enterprise?

 — Kirk vs Picard: Who is the best Star Trek captain?

 — Star Trek movies, ranked worst to best

Turns out that on this particular Eradication Day, Picard is meant to execute the Borg Queen in front of a live audience. However, in a similar manner to say, the Precogs in "Minority Report" or the Hybrid in "Battlestar Galactica," the Queen's seemingly incoherent ramblings actually contain extremely important information. Naturally, she recognizes Locutus of Borg and Picard himself knows that she can see the divergence in time. She explains to him that a single change in the timeline has caused these events and that she can pinpoint it.

Los Angeles in 2024, is where (and when) they must travel to and apparently "there is someone there to help."

And so our suspicions have been confirmed and this second season of "Picard" is truly a Greatest Hits of "Star Trek" compilation  — featuring Q, the Borg and time travel back to contemporary Earth. What a treat. However, this raises the question, how are they going to travel back in time? Jurati confirms that the level of technology in this al-reality is much the same as the one back home, so "cruder" methods of time travel, will be required. Specifically, a slingshot maneuver around a sun, something that James Kirk had done on more than one occasion, most memorably in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home."

However, in order to handle all the fiddly calculations involved – you know, isolating the divergence and micro-shifting for any chroniton radiation – they need the Borg Queen. So a rescue plan is hatched and the final act of this episode is an enthralling race against time as Picard must somehow stall the execution of the Borg Queen, while Jurati creates an opening in the security shield so they can beam out.

If the rest of the season is set on Earth in 2024, it's unlikely we'll get to see much more of the Stargazer

The tension is very effectively built up and director Douglas Aarniokoski takes us right up to the point where had it been so much as a single second longer, suspense would've given way to slapstick comedy, as Picard wavers and hesitates while the crowd grows increasingly impatient for him to blast the Borg Queen into oblivion. Thankfully though, it's handled well and the three-pronged plot with Picard, the Borg Queen and Seven, then Jurati and Rios and finally Raffi and Elnor  — who gets to kick some serious butt  — is enthralling to the end.

They manage to make it to La Sirena with only seconds to spare and plug the Borg Queen into the life support systems, but Confederation security forces track them and also beam aboard La Sirena and hold them at gunpoint. Quite the cliffhanger.

This isn't quite as good as last week's episode, but…really, there's very little between them. The pacing and story are superb — not to mention the cinematography, which is beautiful — and we have very high hopes for this second season of "Picard."

To shoot, or not to shoot. Tension is maintained throughout this episode making it thoroughly enjoyable

It's not quite the Mirror Universe we're used to, but it could just as easily be and it's just as good. "Discovery" has spent a little time there in the past and it formed a major part of the Season 1 story arc. The show returned there in Season 3 with the two-part episode "Terra Firma," but that was set in the year 2255, "Picard" is set in 2401…so is is possible that the Terran Empire has evolved into the Confederation? We're led to believe that a single change in the timeline caused the totalitarian nightmare Picard now faces, where as the human race has always been violent and destructive in the Mirror Universe, finally spreading into space after the Vulcans were massacred after first contact in Bozeman, Montana on April 5, 2063.

Sadly though, Paramount is still struggling with its international audiences and this isn't available to watch in Europe. Unless you have a VPN of course.

When Scott's application to the NASA astronaut training program was turned down, he was naturally upset...as any 6-year-old boy would be. He chose instead to write as much as he possibly could about science, technology and space exploration. He graduated from The University of Coventry and received his training on Fleet Street in London. He still hopes to be the first journalist in space.

10 Star Trek Actors Who Were On Criminal Minds

  • Star Trek stars found unique roles in Criminal Minds, showcasing their range as actors in the dark crime drama.
  • Criminal Minds delves into human depravity while Star Trek celebrates optimism and exploration.
  • Many familiar Star Trek faces appeared in Criminal Minds, adding depth and variety to the crime drama's cast of characters.

The Star Trek universe may not have much in common with the world of Criminal Minds , but several Trek stars appeared in the dark crime drama. With its focus on exploration and its optimistic version of the future, Star Trek celebrates the best of humanity. Criminal Minds , on the other hand, explores the depths of human depravity, but still has moments of light as the heroes fight to put the bad guys behind bars. The familiar Star Trek faces on Criminal Minds display their range as actors , often playing characters very different (and significantly more homicidal) from their Trek characters.

With the nature of procedural crime dramas like Criminal Minds , every episode has a cast of characters involved in the crime of the week. Criminal Minds follows a group of FBI agents who work as profilers in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) , and take on cases too complex or far-reaching for local law enforcement to handle. After its premiere in 2005, Criminal Minds became a ratings hit for CBS and remains popular today. Whether they were playing a victim or an unsub (unknown subject) or a member of law enforcement, these 10 Star Trek stars all appeared in at least one episode of Criminal Minds .

Criminal Minds was canceled by CBS in 2020 after its fifteenth season, but was picked up by Paramount+ in 2022 for a sixteenth season as Criminal Minds: Evolution . The seventeenth season began filming in January 2024.

Todd Stashwick's Captain Liam Shaw became a surprise fan-favorite in Star Trek: Picard season 3 , thanks in large part to Stashwick's compelling performance. As Captain of the USS Titan-A, Shaw did things by the book and was none too pleased when Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Captain William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) pulled his ship into a dangerous rescue mission.

Although Shaw sacrificed himself in Star Trek: Picard season 3's penultimate episode, Picard showrunner Terry Matalas has confirmed the character will return if the proposed spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, ever becomes a reality.

Todd Stashwick has appeared in numerous genre television shows, including a guest spot on Supernatural and a starring role on Terry Matalas's 12 Monkeys . In Criminal Minds season 9, episode 5, "Route 66," Stashwick plays a robber who abducts his estranged daughter and later becomes a spree killer.

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Combs portrayed every Vorta Weyoun clone, a role created especially for him.

Combs also appeared as a couple of different Ferengi, most notably as Liquidator Brunt on DS9, as well as an unknown alien named Tiron and Tsunkatse coordinator Penk. Combs has had a prolific television career, and he appeared in Criminal Minds season 9, episode 12, "The Black Queen" as serial killer and computer hacker John Nichols.

Ethan Phillips portrayed Talaxian chef Neelix in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager . Neelix joined the crew of the USS Voyager soon after the ship found itself in the Delta Quadrant , and he acted as a consultant and guide for the unexplored area of space. Neelix's personality contrasted sharply with Security Chief Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ) and the two developed an antagonistic friendship.

Neelix and Tuvok became one of Star Trek's best duos, and Neelix developed into a valuable and versatile member of Voyager's crew. Ethan Phillips has appeared in numerous television shows and films, including several crime procedural dramas. In Criminal Minds season 1, episode 17, "A Real Rain," Phillips portrayed Marvin Doyle, a schizophrenic serial killer who believed himself to be a vigilante.

John Billingsley

Dr. phlox in star trek: enterprise.

In all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise, John Billingsly portrayed Dr. Phlox, the Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise NX-01 under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). A member of the Denobulan species, Phlox cared deeply about his patients and often used unorthodox methods of treatment to cure their ailments. He kept a menagerie of alien animals in his sickbay to assist in various healing practices.

During his time on the Enterprise, Phlox became good friends with Captain Archer, and Archer often went to Phlox for counseling and advice. Like many television actors, John Billingsly has popped up in numerous crime dramas, including Bones and NCIS: Los Angeles . Billingsley appeared as budding serial killer Hugh Rollins in Criminal Minds season 4, episode 21, "A Shade of Gray."

Wil wheaton, ensign wesley crusher in star trek: the next generation, star trek: the next generation.

Cast Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Wil Wheaton, Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden

Release Date September 28, 1987

Writers Jeri Taylor, Michael Piller, Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, Ronald D. Moore

Showrunner Jeri Taylor, Michael Piller, Rick Berman

Fresh off of the success of Stand By Me , Wil Wheaton joined the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the show's first season as the young Wesley Crusher. As the son of Chief Medical Officer Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), Wesley had more freedom on the USS Enterprise-D than most children. Wes was a bit of a child prodigy and often helped the Enterprise crew find solutions when the ship encountered problems.

Wesley left TNG in the show's fourth season to attend Starfleet Academy but later dropped out to join the enigmatic Traveler (Eric Menyuk) on his journeys throughout time and space. Wheaton has since become a fixture of the Star Trek franchise, hosting the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room . In a very atypical role for Wheaton, he portrayed a psychopathic serial killer named Floyd Hansen in Criminal Minds season 4, episode 4, "Paradise."

Wil Wheaton briefly reprised the role of Wesley Crusher as a Traveler in the Star Trek: Picard season 2 finale.

Commander Tuvok in Star Trek: Voyager

Lieutenant Tuvok served as the Chief of Security of the USS Voyager for all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager . As a Vulcan, Tuvok often served as the logical voice of reason on Voyager, and he was one of Captain Kathryn Janeway's (Kate Mulgrew) most trusted advisors. Tuvok and Janeway were also close personal friends, who had met several years prior to the Vulcan's assignment on Voyager.

Tim Russ is no stranger to police procedurals, having appeared in episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and NCIS , among others. One of the few actors on this list who didn't portray a suspect in Criminal Minds , Tim Russ appeared in season 13, episode 2, "To a Better Place," as Agent Lawrence. Lawrence was one of the committee members who helped reinstate Special Agent Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler).

Connor Trinneer

Commander charles "trip" tucker in star trek: enterprise.

Trip served as the Chief Engineer on the Enterprise NX-01, under the command of his good friend, Captain Archer. Outgoing and down-to-earth, Trip was a gifted engineer who was largely self-taught before joining Starfleet in 2139. Despite their differences, Trip and Vulcan Sub-commander T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) developed feelings for one another over the course of Star Trek: Enterprise , but their romance was cut short by the show's cancelation in season 4.

Trip was supposedly killed in Enterprise's controversial series finale , but the events were only seen via holographic recreations on the holodeck. Connor Trinneer had a memorable 10-episode stint on Stargate: Atlantis , and has appeared in 24, NCIS: Los Angeles, and ABC's 9-1-1 . In Criminal Minds season 4, episode 3, "Minimal Loss," Trineer portrayed Dan Torre alongside Luke Perry's cult leader, Benjamin Cyrus.

René Auberjonois

Constable odo in star trek: deep space nine.

The late René Auberjonois portrayed the stern but lovable Changeling, Constable Odo, in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . As Chief of Security on DS9, Odo was a brilliant detective who was aware of nearly everything and everyone on the busy space station. He ran a tight station and often butted heads with Ferengi bartender Quark (Armin Shimerman) who regularly participated in illicit activities.

Throughout his time on the station, Odo developed feelings for Bajoran Major Kira (Nana Visitor) and she later came to reciprocate those feelings. René Auberjonois starred alongside William Shatner in Boston Legal , and has also appeared in episodes of Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, and Warehouse 13. Auberjonois portrayed attempted proxy killer Colonel Ron Massey in Criminal Minds season 7, episode 9, "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy."

With his tall stature and distinctive look, Doug Jones has had a prolific career playing monsters and creepy creatures in horror films, often working with director Guillermo del Toro. Jones played two different characters in two episodes of Criminal Minds : drug addict Domino Thacker in season 1, episode 11, "Blood Hungry" and fight club captain Beanie in season 4, episode 10, "Brothers in Arms."

In TNG season 3, Frakes tried his hand at directing, and he has since become one of Star Trek's most beloved and prolific directors.

Frakes has directed episodes of numerous popular television shows, including crime procedurals like Castle and NCIS: Los Angeles . In Criminal Minds season 5, episode 12, "The Uncanny Valley," Frakes portrayed child psychiatrist and pedophile Dr. Arthur Malcolm , the father of serial killer Samantha Malcolm (Jennifer Hasty). Okay, I haven’t even watched any of Season 5 yet – I fell away during season 4, but because season 5 sounds interesting, I just jumped in again to finish season 4, and by now, I actually quite like it (Book and Stamets being my favourites). Reading about season 5, I keep wondering why they would revisit the Kellerun. I love DS9, I remember liking that episode, but there was really nothing about that species that made them particulary interesting, right? So I was wondering whether maybe they’ll tie the progenitor plot to the Harvester weapon – maybe it was based on progenitor tech? Any hints in the episodes yet about why it’s the Kellerun?

They haven’t revisited the Kellerun. His species hasn’t entered into the story so far. It’s just a fun Easter egg. His inclusion is about his personal arc, not his people. He just happens to be a Kellerun. And so far, he’s the best thing about the season.

“ And so far, he’s the best thing about the season.” – which probably all but guarantees his death

Ha! Probably, yeah. :)

Burnham and Book, the only characters who actually do anything of consequence on this show.

That’s a rather forced interpretation.

What’s forced is pretty much everything on Discovery. Relationships, casting, storylines, emotion …

It’s pretty accurate. It’s become the B&B show.

Much in the same way that Voyager essentially became the Janeway & Seven show and Enterprise was the Archer, Trip & T’Pol hour.

We -just- had an episode last week that was all about Burnham, Rayner and Stamets.

I would love for Burnham to not be leading almost every away mission and come up with so many solutions totally on her own, but let’s at least recognize when they do change things for the better.

Well, that’s a bit of a tip off that someone looking to complain isn’t actually watching the show….

I know Burnham was front and centre, yet again. Whilst the others supported her, as usual.

Book was in one scene last episode and had zip to do with saving the day.

That’s because she is the main character.

Book was hardly even in the last episode.

I wouldn’t have minded Michael maybe going with another character on this mission though. Detmer, for example, is described as being an excellent pilot.

Nope, she takes her boyfriend (well ex) who isn’t even in Starfleet.

The person best suited to the mission, who has personal ties to the subject under pursuit. By the way, Seven wasn’t in Starfleet until Picard season 2, Odo never was in Starfleet, neither was Martok.

I have also seen you on here claiming that Sisko was wrong to be mad at Worf for abandoning the mission to bring his girlfriend home.

All you are doing is proving that you don’t watch the show at all but come here to fraudulently piss and moan about it.

I did that back when Enterprise came out. I refused to watch because I can’t stand Bakula from Quantum Leap days. I complained non stop about Enterprise, never watched a single episode until after it was cancelled when a player in my D&D group told me I should at least watch the show before I ran my mouth. I was indeed a stupid clown to act that way. I am glad I’m not one now.

I think you may have me confused with someone else as I actually agreed with Sisko’s decision to reprimand Worf.

I watch the show every week, actually more than once because I watch on Thursdays at 6 and again over the weekend.

There are also three separate people who post to Trekmovie with a name similar to mine, by the way.

Is this the episode where the Mirror Enterprise guest stars (as seen in the season preview clips)? If so, does that mean that Mirror Pike and/or Mirror Kirk and Mirror Spock, et al. will show up too, played by the SNW cast?

I expect the Enterprise to be abandoned or something, much cheaper for the show, then they’ll probably just blow it up, because well they can.

Blowing up the Enterprise…a Star Trek tradition since 1984…

Very very doubtful lol. . And unless the episode is time travel based (which I doubt) it’s more likely its been abandoned and found in the 32nd century.

The clip describes it as an interdimensional wormhole so I don’t see why people can’t be on it.

We have seen clips inside the ship, nobody on board. We saw inside the ship in the first trailer for the season. Check trekculture.

I’ve seen the trailer, thanks.

Really looking forward to this one, especially after how much I loved the last one.

It’s exciting to go back to the ISS Enterprise and just like I watched The Chase to get me more motivated for the first episode I’m going to watch Mirror Mirror again for this one.

I’m truly rooting for this show to go out big. So far I’m mostly liking what I’m seeing.

Question: Why does everyone LOVE Shatner but Hate SMG? Aren’t they equa-diva? Isn’t the person playing say……Linus, going to be the Walter Koenig-type of the 2050s talking about all the shit she did and said? :)

Um not many love Shatner either…

Shatner is bigot, he steals other people’s work (to be fair he learned that from Gene), he was a murder suspect who has been likened to OJ Simpson by many people.

I haven’t seen any criticizm of Sonequa that was based on her behavior or history or anything but the fact she’s a she. So until there is something actually real and concrete it’s just sexism from Tate’s little minions.

Shatner is bigot, he steals other people’s work (to be fair he learned that from Gene), he was a murder suspect who has been likened to OJ Simpson by many people.

George Takei named him as a bigot he plagiarized every single book that carries his name and he was in fact a suspect in the death of his wife and many people believe that he was guilty I’m not saying I do but people do

Ah yes, the old “people say it’s true so it must be true” argument. Takei is an over-sensitive egomaniac who’s had a grudge on Shatner for over 55 years. Taking his bias opinion as fact doesn’t make it fact. Try a little critical thinking.

It’s not SMG. It’s the writing. I think SMG is fantastic and doing the best she can with the drivel they write her. I think that’s people’s biggest issue.

The people who are making the complaints show by their complaints that they’re not actually watching the show therefore they can’t possibly be complaining about the writing

It’s too early in the day to be reading this kind of kindergarten logic. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning. I agree with some of the complaints about SMG and all of the complaints about the writing. Actually my complaints are more about Burnham than SMG and I find that season 5 is greatly improved. The point is let people have their opinions instead of being judgemental. Nobody needs to agree with you.

Agreed. This board has been bliss since you know who got the boot last month. Just let people say how they feel for good or bad instead of trying to get on their case about it. Seriously it’s going to be OK.

And the irony is this season so far has been the most civil I seen this board in years concerning Discovery. Yes there are still issues some people have with it, that will never go away but it’s been pretty balanced overall. Everyone has been giving their opinions and just moving on.

I been enjoying the season as well, probably more than I thought I would. It can still suck lol but right now I’ve had few complaints and that’s saying a lot with this show.

I had NO idea he was suspected in killing one of his wives. Dang……..And I guess I was overstating the love of Shatner. My bad. I stand corrected.

He wasn’t a suspect. LAPD cleared him of wrongdoing, because there was no case there. He was only a suspect to the lazy online rumormongers who didn’t bother to closely study it.

Not sure if you were expecting a civil discourse to come out of such a baiting question, but it prompted ugly aspersions about Shatner and Takei with a dig against Discovery’s critics, but nothing against SMG as a person. So… congrats?

What an odd and off topic question for an article that is simply a preview for the next episode of Discovery.

Whoopi Goldberg On Jeanine Pirro's ‘The View’ Interview | WWHL via Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, YouTube

In what appears to be her latest attempt to remain relevant, Star Trek: Picard actress and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg has made the unfounded claim that Republicans want to bring back slavery.

The asinine comment was made during a recent episode of ABC’s The View , wherein, while speaking to the recent decision by the Arizona Supreme Court to honor an 1864 state law which near-completely bans the practice of abortion, the Star Trek: Picard actress declared, “Take a look at the things that [Republicans] are rolling back. Remember I said, ages ago, in their minds they want to bring slavery back.”

“They’re okay with it,” Goldberg baselessly claimed. “Because, you see, things change, and one of the good things about the Supreme Court is you can fight to make sure you make stuff better. You don’t generally fight to make stuff worse. Or to roll back.”

She went on, “And to me, if you’re okay with rolling that back, when things were not even a state, when we had no say… so, how is that going to roll? How is that going to roll? What’s the next thing?”

“Because, you know, with all of this comes birth control,” the actress further claimed. “With all of this comes everything that you need as a woman to have had put in place to make sure that we were doing better than we were before.”

Far from the first time the first time the far-Left actress has made baseless accusations on The View , Goldberg was also making headlines in March of this year, when she proposed the Biden administration used its presidential powers to “ throw every Republican in jail .”

“It’s not a good thing, what this means is he can do anything,” Goldberg would add, suggesting, “Biden, could throw (Trump) in jail, this is a slippery slope if they give him this immunity,” as she weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision to only allow oral arguments in former president Donald Trump’s hush money trial later this month.

Time and time again, Goldberg has displayed a fairly biased stance on racial issues, often spewing one-sided opinions about whatever narrative she’s trying to push. In February of 2022, the Star Trek: The Next Generations actress got herself suspended from The View over a series of tasteless comments about the Holocaust.

“If you are going to do this then let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No, it’s not about race,” said the far-Left actress while discussing the removal of the graphic novel Maus from a Tennessee school district’s curriculum. “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man. That’s what it’s about.”

The View co-host Ana Navarro interjected, pointing out, “But it’s about white supremacy. That’s what it’s about. It’s about going after Jews and Gypsies,” to which Goldberg responded, “But these are two groups of white people!”

Goldberg attempted to elaborate, “You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other.”

In July of that same year, Goldberg would go on to baselessly accuse label Turning Point USA as a “neo-Nazi” group, following the conservative organization’s Student Action Summit event that took place in Tampa, Florida.

“Neo-Nazis were out there in the front of the conference with antisemitic slurs and, you know, the Nazi swastika and a picture of a so-called Jewish person with exaggerated features, just like Goebbels did during the Third Reich,” she baselessly accused. “It’s the same thing, right out of that same playbook.”

Interestingly, Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson, and there are several instances in which the actress has made claims regarding her alleged Jewish heritage. The Jewish Chronicle’s Jonathan Sacerdoti collected information regarding Goldberg’s comments over the years, pointing out some of the discrepancies in her purported heritage.

Sacerdoti notes that The View co-host once claimed, “Goldberg is my name—it’s part of my family, part of my heritage” she once explained, “just like being black… I just know I am Jewish.”

He also drew attention to a 1997 interview with Barbara Walters in which she further alleged, “Jewish, Catholic, got Chinese people and white people in my family. I’m a mutt basically. I’m the best of all – of all the things that go into making humans,” also pointing out that she once claimed to be “a quarter Mexican.”

It appears Goldberg’s dubious claims about her alleged heritage share more than a few similarities to her unfounded, uneducated comments accusing Republicans of wanting to bring back slavery.

Star Trek Just Delivered a New Take on a Classic Next Generation Episode

Star Trek: Discovery did its own version of the Next Generation finale, highlighting the differences between the two shows.

Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

Whatever the problems in its first two seasons, Star Trek: The Next Generation ended in perfect fashion. “All Good Things…” saw Captain Picard become unstuck in time, visiting the past, present, and future of his ship.

“All Good Things…” allowed the show and fans to see just how far TNG had come over the years. It revisits the clunky inaugural season via Picard’s interactions in the past with Tasha Yar, whose death midway through season one only underscored the tumultuous first two years of the series. And by going into the future, checking in on Professor Data, Captain Beverly Picard, and journalist Geordi La Forge (married to Leah Brahms, for some reason), the show imagined future adventures beyond the series finale for our favorite characters.

By the time that present tense Picard joins his crew at the poker table, “All Good Things…” confirms what we fans always felt. This was an ensemble show with a wonderful cast, and we like seeing them all together.

Ad – content continues below

That feel-good ending is actually representative of some of the criticism surrounding Star Trek: Discovery . Instead of continuing the ensemble approach that TNG and all of its followers took ( Enterprise , to a lesser extent), Discovery has a single protagonist in the form of Michael Burnham . Burnham serves as the main character in every storyline, in a way not seen since the days of William Shatner stealing his co-stars’ lines for Kirk. The bridge crew of Discovery have names, a few facial expressions, and that’s about it.

So when the fourth episode of Discovery ‘s final season, “ Face the Strange ,” gives Burnham a chance to revisit her own crew’s past as well as see the Discovery’s possible distant future, it’s a take on TNG ‘s “All Good Things…” idea that hits very differently. But there’s no denying it’s also true to the ethos of what Discovery is versus The Next Generation ‘s approach to storytelling in the ’90s.

In “Face the Strange,” Burnham and her new First Officer Commander Rayner are sent time jumping around the Discovery. The episode involves the treasure hunters Moll and L’ak distracting the Discovery on its chase for the Progenitor tech by infecting Burnham and Rayner with a device that thrusts them into ship’s past and future.

The episode resolves when Burnham and Rayner convince members of the Discovery crew from season one to jump to warp, which allows Stamets (whose Tardigrade DNA puts him outside of time) to remove the infecting time bug and send the duo back to their time. To do so, Rayner and Burnham have to prove that they know the bridge crew, who do not recognize Rayner and see Burnham as a mutineer.

Of course, they succeed, but not in a manner that will satisfy most viewers who remember Picard’s trip down memory lane in TNG . The crew interactions just don’t hit the same way in the Discovery version of this concept. Rayner wins over the crew not by pointing to qualities that viewers have seen by watching every season of Discovery , but by repeating exposition from the previous episode. Even many of Burnham’s pleas fall flat, heightening only the surface level of even well-developed characters like Tilly.

But then there’s the crux of Burnham’s argument. When her younger, angrier self storms onto the bridge, the current Burnham gets desperate. Her only recourse is to reveal details about the death of Ariam, the android member of the crew who sacrifices herself at the end of the season two episode “Project Daedalus.” Discovery handled Ariam’s death in the most clunky way possible, only giving the character any attention in the previous episode, manipulating audiences into caring about her sacrifice.

However, when Burnham revisits the moment in “Face the Strange,” she doubles down on the emotional appeals. Burnham tells the crew about how Ariam chose to die to save the ship, and while Tilly and Owo insist that they would never let that happen, Ariam interjects. She would gladly sacrifice herself for the others, if that was the only way to save them.

In other words, Burnham doesn’t make a logical argument about the science behind her arrival from the future, nor does she assert her authority and commandeer the ship to do what needs to be done. Rather, she leans heavy into the emotion, tugging on everyone’s heartstrings as a solution to the problem they face.

If you like your Star Trek to be logical and professional, then Burnham’s solution is just one more example of the shortcomings in Discovery . But then again, why are you watching Discovery at this point if you’re not down with that approach?

In the same way that “All Good Things…” gave TNG a victory lap to celebrate everything that the once ill-advised show was and had become, “Face the Strange” embraces Discovery ‘s own unique identity. This is a show in which things happen not because they make logical sense, but because they make emotional sense.

As Discovery comes to an end, “Face the Strange” highlights the show’s unlikely path from oddball prequel to an exploration of the future of Star Trek . But as much as the show has changed cast members and settings, it’s always been about solving problems through emotional intelligence. The “All Good Things…” riff in “Face the Strange” proves that if Discovery was ever going to be the show that some Trekkies want, it should have changed a long time ago.

Star Trek: Discovery is streaming now on Paramount+.
