Steve Hackett on Tour

A Steve Hackett show can conjure rock's potential for grandeur and glory. As a guitar hero who made his bones defining the sound of Genesis in the salad days of progressive rock, Hackett learned a thing or two about how to stage a show and how to fill it with elegant, carefully constructed melodies. Of course, he's maintained a long, rich solo career since leaving Genesis, but his legacy with the band is an undeniable part of who he is, so his shows tend to feature a combination of material from his solo albums and Genesis classics as well. And since his music is technically demanding, every tour finds Hackett backed by a top-tier crew of musicians, helping to bring his complex — but entirely accessible — compositions to life on the stage. It's a show that brings heady visions of prog rock's luminous past, but still feels completely relevant to the current moment.

Steve Hackett in Concert

As the lead guitarist for Genesis from 1971's Nursery Cryme through 1976's Wind & Wuthering, Steve Hackett was crucial to creating the template not only for the legendary British band but for progressive rock as a whole. In the spirit of the genre's adventurous approach, Hackett developed a sound unlike anything that had been heard in rock before, something simultaneously liquid and visceral. He released his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, in 1975, and it became a prog classic in its own right. After leaving Genesis, he leaped with both feet into his solo career, and he hasn't stopped creating commanding music ever since. Along the way, Hackett has also taken time to collaborate with stellar peers such as Yes bassist Chris Squire (with whom he formed the duo Squackett), Yes guitarist Steve Howe (in supergroup GTR) and Alan Parsons. But he's always tended his own musical vision first and foremost, maintaining his status as a prog rock guitar hero in perpetuity.

A quality performance with great sound and the light show gave the feel of a stadium show.

As good as …. Always

Recognizing none of us are getting younger, we were pleased to see Steve Hackett, Nad Sylvan and the band perform again. In fact I’m seeing him again on the same tour, a month after this event. They’re great. I think they are underrated. Every musician is talented in their own right, and together they are very tight and accurate. I do prefer the Genesis covers vs Steve’s solo album contributions. I think they do Genesis with a refreshed , cleaner, intricate sound that I prefer over the original. Much of Steve’s solo work is more surgical than musical. I just wish they had performed Spectral Mornings, and Nad singing the words that David Longdon had added to the original instrumental.

Amazing to the band perform such great music. New and old. Thank you!!!

Prog Master!

What a show! From beginning to end, Steve captivated the audience with his exquisite guitar playing through his tunes new and old and Foxtrot! Truly a fantastic experience. He’s still got it at 74! Go see him if your a Prog Rock fan!

Absolutely great

I've seen Hackett 5 times and he continues to amaze me with his talent along with his incredible band. Having been a Genesis fan since 1976 you can close your eyes and relive those great songs.

Steve Hackett Akron

Another nice show from Steve. Always gives a 100% and the music speaks for itself. Don't miss this show if you get a chance to see it. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The extremely excellent Steve Hackett Experience

From start to finish, the show was fantastic It is hard to believe Steve is 74 he can still play that guitar like nobody’s business He & the other musicians are seasoned & meld excellently together To hear old Genesis songs made my heart soar To cap it all off they played Suppers Ready a 22 minute song which I thought I would never hear in concert It almost brought me to tears A wonderful time all around!!!

A musical journey of awesomeness

The music that Steve and his band play is a musical journey that will leave you with goosebumps and standing ovations. This is my third time to see Steve Hackett in concert, and it just gets better each time! The crowd was hungry for those creamy tones, and there was at least three standing ovations with everyone in the crowd wanting more. The atmosphere was electric and the band gave us our moneys worth on the night of March 23 at Kalamazoo state theater! The entire Fox Trot album was played along with new material. Don’t miss Steve in concert, snag a ticket!

He always puts on a great show. Total class act. Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Entertaining

The music was progressive, tight, mesmerizing and very enjoyable. It was my third time seeing Steve Hackett and looking forward to his next tour whatever it is. Also I was pleased that I had a real paper ticket for a keepsake.

Steve Hackett Bringing Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’ Tour to North America

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett announced North American tour dates for his Foxtrot at Fifty show.

He’ll perform 29 concerts, kicking off in Montreal on Oct. 3 and winding up in Los Angeles on Nov. 18. Along with a complete performance of Foxtrot , the shows will also feature a selection of “Hackett highlights.”

“ Foxtrot was a hybrid of a lot of different styles,” the guitarist recently told Ramzine of the 1972 album, the first Genesis LP to make the Top 20. “At the time, Genesis were a band pulling in a lot of different directions as we all had so many different influences. Tony Banks was into Vaughan Williams, Phil [Collins] was interested in big bands, [Peter] Gabriel was into soul music, [Mike] Rutherford was into folk and Led Zeppelin and I was into blues and baroque music.”

He added that “We were a young struggling band without much in the way of a clear sense of direction, but knowing we wanted to do something exceptional. And I think we pulled it off. Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at the time. There’s not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m looking forward to performing the whole album live.”

Recent tour reviews

Been 50 yrs and Steve had clearly used the gap in our get togethers to practice. I've heard lots of Steve's post-Genesis music and liked it all a lot. The gig, however, just blew me away. The 2nd half reworking of a seminal Genesis work, Selling England by The Pound was absolutely amazing. Steve's band are exceptional and if anything I enjoyed their version to the original. The first half mixture of recent and older works were equally well presented. The audience were entranced by all the skills on show and Steve's stories. I'd recommend this tour and any others they may undertake. A full house showed their appreciation with a well deserved and loud and long standing ovation. The two bonus encore gift were equally brilliant. And then another ovation. Fantastic. Thanks Steve and gang.

Steve Hackett, Birmingham Symphony Hall, 18/11/19.

I'll get the gripes out of the way first. Every time I see him, his guitar is too far down in the mix, as is Nad's voice. Is it too much to ask for Steve and his singer to be audible above the rest of the band? And please don't turn your lights on the audience unless they are top lights. The lights from the stage are quite literally blinding.

Anyway, apart from those two little niggles, the quality of the music was superb as usual. The new drummer - Craig Blundell - was completely different. They even gave him a drum solo at the end of Clocks, and if I closed my eyes I could have been listening to Carl Palmer or even Bill Bruford at one point. I did think the band missed Gary O'Toole's vocals though.

The first half was Spectral Mornings with a few tracks from At the Edge of Light. John Hackett joined them for a couple of tracks, and a real surprise was "The Red Flower of Tachai Blooms Everywhere", which is a Chinese-influenced track which I didn't think the band could pull off - but they did thanks to a flute duet with John and Rob Townsend.

After a short break, they played "Selling England" straight through, just as you'd hear it if you played the CD. The extended version of I Know what I Like was fantastic. Hats off to Nad for completely nailing "More Fool Me". I used to try and sing this when I was a folkie, and I had to do a simplified version on the guitar and some of the notes I couldn't reach even if I dropped it down a key or two. And The Battle of Epping Forest was really well done by them all.

For me - and this is a technical guitar thing - the highlight was just two notes in Steve's guitar solo in Firth of Fifth. I had no idea a guitar could play notes that high, which seemed to be the 5th or 6th harmonic of a note played halfway up the neck on the G string... When the place went silent after the applause for that song, a man in front of me shouted out "That was the best version ever!" and do you know, I tend to agree with him.

The bonus track, "Deja Vu" - well that was a complete triumph. Absolutely beautiful. On the way back I tried to think what album it could have fit into, and to be honest the only one I could have fit it into was... Voyage of the Acolyte or maybe even Spectral Mornings! Too beautiful for one of the Gabriel era Genesis albums, even though he wrote it.

Overall, I noticed that the band seemed to have been let off the leash a bit performance-wise, particularly Rob Townsend and Jonas Reingold.

And a teaser for you - he mentioned the Heart of England orchestra he toured with last year - and said they are working on something similar...

Well there you have it. I nearly killed myself getting there as I've hardly walked for 6 weeks following my op, but I'm so glad I made it. Those of you going, you are in for a real treat.

Very enjoyable show. This was my fourth time seeing Steve Hackett. I will definitely see him again the next time he is in town. I love watching and listening to him play electric guitar.

The set list was a good mix of new and old material. He played the "Selling England By The Pound" album in its entirety, but it was wonderful that he immediately followed it with a song which was recorded at the time of that album but never included on it. It was good that he was also celebrating the 40th anniversary of his "Spectral Mornings" album. The first set started with a great version of "Every Day" and ended with "Clocks" about 55 minutes later. After a twenty minute break, they played the second set which ran for an hour and a half.

The sound quality and the lighting were excellent. His band are great musicians. It was a sold out crowd in a lovely old theater which just made the evening even more enjoyable.

As advertised, the show will feature the 1972 Genesis album Foxtrot performed in full, plus additional fan favorites. After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett’s solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hold onto your seats, music lovers! The guitar virtuoso extraordinaire, Steve Hackett , is gearing up to deliver a monumental performance at the legendary Kalamazoo State Theatre on Saturday, March 23, 2024 . Brace yourselves for an unforgettable night as Hackett takes us on a time-traveling journey through the iconic Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot .

Hot on the heels of his immensely successful solo tour, Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour in 2022 became a resounding hit. This tour celebrates the timeless influence of Foxtrot , the album that played a pivotal role in establishing Genesis as a major force in British rock back in 1972.

Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 and made his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album, which gained greater commercial success in Europe than in the UK. The band’s extensive touring and enthusiastic audience reactions encouraged them to push the boundaries of music, experimenting with longer compositions and narrative-driven performances. This artistic evolution allowed frontman Peter Gabriel to incorporate theatrical elements into their shows, further elevating the band’s profile.

Starting in 2023, Steve Hackett is set to bring Foxtrot at Fifty to North America, following the massive success of his 2022 UK tour. Speaking about the upcoming tour, Steve Hackett said, “I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time. I think there is not one weak track on the album; they all have their strong points, and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Prepare to be transported back to the golden era of progressive rock as Steve Hackett and his talented band deliver a mesmerizing performance featuring the iconic tracks from Foxtrot and other Hackett highlights.

Don’t miss your chance to witness this legendary musician live in action. Secure your tickets now and join us at the Kalamazoo State Theatre on March 23, 2024, for a night of unforgettable music and nostalgia.

Excellent concert great venue.

What great guitarist Steve I was so hoping the last few years that he’d make this way to Toronto and when he did he did not disappoint what a fantastic show

Back in the day, around 40 years ago, at Massey Hall, Steve Hackett played in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. The band was then very talented much like his now touring musicians. I took ten friends and all of them were quite surprised at how great a guitarist Steve is. This current show was again and excellent performance to a full house of fans seeing his expertise of sound and masterful guitar playing. Truly a great band and exciting music had by all. Bravo! Steve Kash

Steve Hacket was fabulous. Incredible guitarist and the band was top notch.

Hackett is Brilliant

Could not have asked for a better show. Foxtrot was amazing live and the extended ending to Foxtrot’s last song was Hackett genius. The crowd was so into this experience, heads nodding throughout the whole show. Of course, Firth of Fifth is really what we all came to hear and see. From the brilliant keyboard intro to Hackett’s soaring guitar solo, we all could listen and watch that on endless repeat!!

Surprised obstructed view

Although the band was great, I was disappointed at our view. Our seats were on the 3rd floor, stage right but we could only see a couple members of the band because of the 2 huge hanging speakers that blocked our view. I think this entire section should be classified as "obstructed view"and I would have considered other seats if this was made clear at time of purchase. Thank you.

An awesome concert experience

Steve Hackett was at the top of his game, musically thrilling ,his playing was magnificent , the band was tight and Massey Hall was the perfect venue for his show, Foxtrot at Fifty although not my favorite record from Genesis was fantastic especially Supper's Ready and his encore of Firth of Fifth and Los Endos was the perfect ending to the show.

He can so still hackett

All I can say was that this was amazing! Thanks Steve for bringing your band and blowing the roof off Massey Hall!

Steve Hacketr

Wonderful show, the second half was the entire Foxtrot Album.

Absolutely Amazing

Steve Hackett best show I’ve seen at Massey Hall, with those incredible great musicians he has with him and the acoustics at Massey Hall are better than ever. This is the first review I ever wrote but it was such a great show I l had to take the time to do it. Steve Hackett 👍👍👍👍👍

Steve hackett bio.

Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett announced his Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited – Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour in 2022. The tour marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock.

Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band’s profile.

Now, for 2023, Steve brings Foxtrot at Fifty to North America for a string of eagerly awaited dates following the huge selling UK 2022 tour.

“I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Steve Hackett. “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.”

Guitarist Steve Hackett brings Genesis Revisited–Foxtrot at 50 tour to Kalamazoo, Michigan

Kevin reed 25 march 2024.

  • facebook icon

The legendary English guitar virtuoso Steve Hackett and his band performed at the Kalamazoo (Michigan) State Theater on Saturday night before an enthusiastic audience.

The concert showed that Hackett is going strong as one of the finest guitarists from the 1970s progressive rock era, continuing as both a recording artist and live performer. It also showed that the audience for the early music of Genesis also remains strong, with the 1,500-seat venue nearly sold out.

The show was part of the North American leg of Hackett’s Genesis Revisited–Foxtrot at 50 + Hackett Highlights Tour and   featured a selection of the guitarist’s solo compositions followed by a complete performance of the acclaimed 1972 Genesis album  Foxtrot .

steve hackett tour

The atmosphere in the theater grew more heated as the audience responded appreciatively to each number. The 74-year-old Hackett, who continues to play impeccably across an extraordinary range of musical styles, exhibits no sign of slowing down.

This is the third year of the  Foxtrot at 50  shows. The world tour, which started in Italy in 2022 and is currently scheduled to end in Mexico City at the end of April, will include a total of 135 dates. Attesting to his worldwide popularity, Hackett has already performed or will be performing in the UK, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

The show opened with three songs from Hackett’s latest and 30th solo studio recording,  The Circus and the Nightwhale.  The record is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age concept album recorded between the 2022 and 2023 legs of the tour, and then released in February.

The first number, “People of the Smoke,” a dark song about working class life in postwar London (where the musician was born), featured Hackett on a couple of blistering electric guitar solos. The band members also showed off their talents with a five-part a cappella vocal segment—the only uplifting moment in the number—about the arrival of the big top circus at The Smoke, i.e., London: “Flash of light when the sun shines through / Fairground dreamland where we flew / Ooh, Ooh, Ooh.”

The tour band includes Roger King on keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements, Rob Townsend on saxophones and flute, Jonas Reingold on bass, Nad Sylvan on vocals and Craig Blundell on drums.

The remaining numbers performed in the first half of the show included tracks from several other Hackett solo projects. A standout was “The Devil’s Cathedral,” a somber story about ambition that involves a murder, which began with a cathedral organ intro and a disturbing overlay of soprano saxophone. This was followed by a memorable angular guitar riff by Hackett and wickedly sounding vocals by Sylvan.

steve hackett tour

After a break, the band launched into a performance of Foxtrot , the 52-year-old album that helped bring mass popularity to Genesis as a group in the early 1970s. It was the second Genesis album on which Hackett was lead guitarist and his influence throughout the album stands out. To this audience member’s ear, the performance on Saturday night was an exceptional recreation of the album.

Sylvan does an excellent job of emulating the vocals of Genesis co-founder Peter Gabriel, while also preserving something of his own qualities as a singer. His reenactment of Gabriel’s on-stage theatrics brought back memories of the original live performance of  Foxtrot— without   having to wear the fox head and red evening dress that Gabriel had worn—during the Genesis tour of 1972 and 1973.

Foxtrot , a favorite among early Genesis fans, has all the attributes of the progressive rock music genre. The songs are thematically and compositionally complex with an eclectic mix of lyrical ideas and musical influences. Although the  Foxtrot  record does not possess the concept album form, the songs are longer than what would typically have qualified for radio play in the 1970s.

The performance of  Foxtrot ’s “Watcher of the Skies,” a song written by Gabriel and influenced by Arthur C. Clarke’s 1953 science-fiction novel Childhood’s End  about a peaceful alien invasion ,  was memorable. Sylvan stood on a platform holding up a small telescope surveying the skies, while the band built the pulsating rhythmic theme into a theater-shaking crescendo.

The other memorable song was Hackett’s solo acoustic guitar performance of “Horizon,” which forms something of an intro to the 23-minute allegoric finale “Supper’s Ready.” Written in a baroque style by Hackett, the instrumental number highlighted his gifts as a versatile artist and much more than a rock music electric guitarist.

Steve Hackett was born into a working class family in 1950. He has commented about the house in Pimlico that he grew up in being across the river from the Battersea Power Station. This is the former coal-powered electricity generating complex on the south bank of the River Thames that was immortalized by Pink Floyd on their 1977 album  Animals with an image of an inflated pig flying between its giant chimneys.

steve hackett tour

Hackett began playing guitar at age 14 and was influenced somewhat paradoxically by both the Rolling Stones and Andrés Segovia. Developing skills on both electric and nylon acoustic instruments, the young artist excelled in multiple genres such as rock and roll, the blues and classical music.

Between 1968 and 1970 he played in several bands in London that all veered in the direction of the progressive rock that was becoming increasingly popular at that time. In his autobiography  A Genesis in My Bed,  Hackett describes how he came to appreciate the music of King Crimson and, during a live performance of their song “Epitaph,” he became transfixed by their pan-genre approach.

Hackett writes, “In one momentary flash, I could feel how humanity was capable of the most extraordinary things, from achieving the heights of sublime achievements, to plummeting into the depths of potential cataclysm.”

There is perhaps no better summary of the polarity of themes that pervaded the progressive rock music that became enormously popular internationally from the late-1960s to the mid-1970s before it exhausted itself in bombastic stadium extravaganzas. The hopes and dreams of that generation of artists for a better future of peace and universal brotherhood were mixed in with expressions of despair and fear that mankind faced an inevitable ending in some sort of dystopian self-destruction.

Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 after he received a call from Peter Gabriel, who had responded to an ad in  Melody Maker that said, “Guitarist writer seeks receptive musicians determined to strive beyond existing stagnant musical forms.”

Hackett’s contribution to the group extended through six Genesis studio albums before he left in 1977 to pursue his solo career and collaborate with a wide range of other artists. The other four members of Genesis—Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks—also pursued solo careers, some of them going on to become major figures.

While he is not as well-known as Gabriel or Collins, for example, Hackett has remained true to his aim of working with all sounds and styles and entertaining audiences with music that is accessible, intriguing and less predictable. This was certainly on display in Kalamazoo on Saturday night.

Adrian Belew (L) and Steve Vai are teaming up for the King Crimson 'BEAT' Tour.

In the late ’60s, King Crimson was one of the most influential prog rock groups in the world.

After disbanding in 1974, guitarist Robert Fripp reformed the band in 1981 with new members Adrian Belew , Bill Bruford and Tony Levin. The quartet took their sound in a wholly new direction with their three African, post-punk and minimalist albums “Discipline,” “Beat” and “Three of a Perfect Pair.”

Now, more than 40 years later, King Crimson sans Fripp and Bruford will take that trio of records on the road for their 2024 ‘BEAT Tour’ with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey.

Along the way, the legendary outfit will stop into New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Oct. 5, Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Theatre on Oct. 9, Rochester’s Kodak Center on Oct. 19 and Albany’s The Egg on Oct. 21.

While Fripp isn’t part of the tour, he did give the upcoming jaunt its blessing.

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica. Even, I suggested the name,” the 77-year-old shared on Facebook .

For fans that want to see the daring rockers live, tickets are available for all concerts as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 5, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Soon after, the  ‘Satch/Vai Tour’  will take off sending the pair — who have played together since Satriani was Vai’s teacher when they were teens — on the road for another three months.

Steve Hackett Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights and Solo 2024 UK tour

25th September 2023: Legendary guitarist Steve Hackett announces the dates for his 2024 UK tour: Steve Hackett - Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo . The tour takes in 15 dates across the UK culminating with a visit to London's Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 23rd October. To mark the 50th anniversary of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway , Hackett is including a selection of highlights from this iconic Genesis album. Tickets go on sale on: Friday 29th September at 10am https://myticket.co.uk/artists/steve-hackett

Steve Hackett's timeless guitar-work was woven throughout Genesis' classic 70s catalogue of albums. In recent years he and his outstanding touring line-up of Roger King (keyboards), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Jonas Reingold (bass, backing vocals), Rob Townsend (saxophone, flutes, additional keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums) have brought many of these albums back to the concert hall to great acclaim. Special guest, Amanda Lehmann will be joining the whole of the UK tour on guitar and vocals. Many fans have also been asking for more tracks from The Lamb to be included. What better way to celebrate half-a-century of this remarkable album than to include a selection of Lamb Highlights alongside some of Hackett's finest solo work and unmissable Genesis Greats .

"I'm hugely looking forward to the 2024 UK tour," says Steve Hackett, "including 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' favourites as well as other iconic Genesis numbers along with solo gems. It'll also be exciting to return to the wonderful Royal Albert Hall!"
