How to get from London to Stonehenge – Taking an Organised Tour, Public Transport or a Car

If you’re touring the UK and are based in London, then you simply cannot miss Stonehenge off your itinerary. This ancient site is thought to date back to prehistoric times, though scientists can only guess exactly when and how the standing bluestones were placed on Salisbury Plain.

Stonehenge is an iconic British site and even features in a key work by one of the UK’s most famous writers – Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The place is shrouded in mystery, legends and of course myths, and this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an incredible spectacle to behold. 

If you want to take a Stonehenge day trip from London , then this guide has you covered. Taking a trip to Stonehenge from London by train means catching a train at London Waterloo station. There are over 35 trains per day and the journey time is about one hour and 25 minutes each way. Some services are direct. 

You can also depart from Clapham Junction if that’s more convenient. Remember you’ll also need to travel from your hotel to one of those stations. London Waterloo is on the Northern, Bakerloo, Jubilee and Waterloo and City lines, and lies just south of the River Thames. Clapham Junction is further down the main line. 

Once you reach Salisbury you’ll have to make another journey to get to Stonehenge, as it’s around ten miles away from there. You can choose between catching a tour bus operated by a private company or taking a taxi. The former takes about 25 minutes and the latter about 15 minutes. 

While it’s possible to visit Stonehenge from London by train, you can’t get there without involving an additional taxi or bus journey, and it’s difficult to predict exactly what a cab will cost unless you don’t mind phoning in advance to ask.

You could also arrange your own Stonehenge to London tour by bus. National Express coaches operate from Victoria Coach Station in London, which is about 300 metres from the tube station. That is on the Circle, District and Victoria lines. 

This is the most time-consuming way to get from L (London) to S (Stonehenge). In fact the trip again takes you to Salisbury, from where you’ll again need to catch a tour bus or taxi to reach Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. The drive will take about 15 or 25 minutes once you’re in the cab or on board the bus. 

Tickets for National Express coaches are usually cheap, but really that’s the only factor in their favour. The journey time from Victoria to Salisbury is at least 3 hours and 15 minutes, and then you have another trip to make by taxi or local tour bus.

At a distance of around 85 miles each way, travel to Stonehenge from London by car can be quicker than public transport. The outward and return trip should take around one-and-a-half hours each, subject to traffic conditions (and finding your way without getting lost)! 

There is a car park at Stonehenge. This is operated by English Heritage , and they may ask you to pay for parking if you are a non-member who hasn’t pre-booked a ticket. Once you pay for entry, this charge should be refunded. If you’ll have trouble walking from the car park to the stones, a visitor shuttle bus is provided. 

Don’t forget that you’ll need to budget for petrol and the cost of car rental if you plan to drive to Stonehenge from London and don’t have access to a vehicle already. Parking in London can also be a big problem – and very expensive even where it is available. Central London also has a congestion charge. 

Getting out of and back into London can also be tricky for those unfamiliar with the city, and traffic levels around the outskirts tend to be notoriously high.

While there are no direct trains from London to Stonehenge - it's located in the middle of Salisbury Plain - rail travel is certainly something to consider, especially if you've got time on your hands.

The best option is to hop aboard the South Western Railway service to Salisbury at London Waterloo station. Trains depart regularly (there are usually two or three an hour), and the journey takes between 1.5 to 2 hours . The cheapest fares kick in after the morning rush hour, while savings can be enjoyed by travelers with advance purchase of a BritRail Pass , which can be acquired online.

While a bus from London to Salisbury can be cheaper, it can take longer than the train (up to three hours) and offers fewer departures. Buses leave from London's Victoria Coach Station as early as 6am.

However you get here, once in Salisbury, you'll need to have made plans to either rent a car and drive the 20 minutes to Stonehenge, grab an Uber or taxi, or take a bus. Cyclists may want to look into renting a bike, as you could even cycle to it in around an hour.

Fortunately for travelers, a company called Salisbury Red offers a convenient hop-on, hop-off shuttle bus service that connects directly from Salisbury city center to Stonehenge (admission included). An option to stop at the ruins of Old Sarum is available.

That said, if you're planning on taking a couple or more days, you can certainly make the most of the opportunity to explore the English countryside. And there are no end of lovely spots to visit along the way, from the beautiful Cotswolds to the charming city of Winchester . That said, journey times may be a little shorter if you pick up a car upon arrival at Heathrow Airport, so you may wish to collect a car and hit the road upon your arrival in England.

For those heading straight to Stonehenge from central London - a distance of around 88 miles - expect the journey to take between 2 to 2.5 hours , depending on traffic. From London, you'll head due west along the usually busy M3, before taking the A303 and eventually the A360 direct to Stonehenge. While parking at Stonehenge is free for those with tickets, it can be busy, especially in peak season.

An alternative that will avoid the usually heavy traffic along the approaching roads to Stonehenge is to park in Salisbury and grab the shuttle bus service mentioned in #3 above. Five park-and-stay options are available, all convenient to the city center and the shuttle bus. An added advantage is that you can also spend time exploring popular Salisbury attractions , including its magnificent cathedral.

All three places are unique and of major historic importance and as such are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Having picked you up from one of three convenient locations within Central London in a luxury air-conditioned coach, with our driver-guide, our first stop of the day is Stonehenge.

Please note that Windsor Castle is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On these days there will be a short guided walking tour of the ancient riverside town of Windsor, and you will have free time to explore. Enjoy an extended visit to Bath with entry to the Roman Baths included.

Many people consider this place to be the most mysterious in the world .  Nobody is quite sure why the stone circles were built, but your guide will explain the various theories and about the people who built them. What we certainly know is that the site is aligned in the direction of the summer solstice sunrise and the winter solstice sunset . Admire the incredible achievements of the prehistoric people who conceived and constructed this extraordinary engineering project using ingenious primitive technology. It’s such a fascinating site that even President Obama found the time to divert his helicopter to land in Stonehenge for a visit. The site includes a Visitor Centre displaying over 250 artifacts, a recreated Neolithic village, and a cafe.

Pulteney bridge

Upon leaving Stonehenge we travel further into the English countryside, passing the green pastoral rolling hills of the Salisbury Plain, to our next stop Bath.

Bath is renowned for its stunning 18th century Georgian architecture, natural beauty and hot spring water. The city was founded by the Romans who in 50AD, taking advantage of the hot springs, built a spa and Temple to the goddess Sulis Minerva. The Roman Baths and Temple still exist and can be visited.

In the 18th century the city developed as a centre for High Society and elegant Georgian town-houses and public buildings were built. Bath is always associated with the novelist Jane Austin who lived here and included the town in two of her books.

Situated in the centre of town is the majestic 12th Century Bath Abbey. Bath was used as a filming location in the hit Netflix series Bridgerton , and you might notice many familiar locations that appeared in the show as you walk around the city.

Lunch is not included in the tour, but there are many places to eat in the city centre.

Windsor Castle

The Grand Reception Room, Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, and it has since been the home of 42 monarchs. It is still in use by His Majesty King Charles III where he hosts official ceremonies and foreign Heads of State. You will have access to the castle to visit the many impressive royal rooms, richly decorated with priceless artwork, tapestries and furniture. Also in the Castle you can visit St George’s Chapel, which resembles in scale a small cathedral, where Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest and where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married.

The Undercroft Café, named after Edward III’s medieval Undercroft, is one of the oldest surviving spaces in Windsor Castle where you can enjoy coffee and cake.

Windsor Town

Windsor Castle and St George’s Chapel are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On these days there will be a short guided walking tour of the ancient town of Windsor, and you will have free time to explore.

The town of Windsor offers a delightful array of quaint shops, traditional English pubs,  and cafes.The town’s vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by the River Thames, which flows through its heart, providing opportunities for leisurely strolls along the waterfront. Windsor boasts a rich heritage, evident in its well-preserved architecture, including medieval timbered buildings and Georgian townhouses, adding to its unique character and appeal.

It would be such a shame to drive all the way between London and Bath without showing you some of the delights of our countryside. Using our small buses, we take the back roads for much of the journey, passing through beautiful, historic villages and towns, and taking roads that the big buses can’t. Our first pick up is on the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, SE1 7PB. This is the bus pick up and drop off point for the London Eye ( see departure point page here ) This is in the Waterloo area and a short walk from both Waterloo and Westminster Stations. Your bus and guide will normally arrive 5-10 minutes before departure. Look out for a small white bus with “The English Bus” written on the side. A prompt departure is essential so please arrive in plenty of time.

Outside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London Victoria, at 2 Bridge Place, SW1V 1QA ( see departure point page here ) This is a very short walk from Victoria Station. Take exit 1 from the main railway station and turn right. Please be waiting outside the hotel, we will stop to pick you up as close to the hotel entrance as we can.

After we have picked everyone up, and you are sat comfortably, your driver/guide will introduce themselves, and explain the plan for your day. Your guide will provide full commentary on our interesting route out of London, passing some major landmarks on our way. We will make a quick bathroom/coffee/snack stop on request - you are more than welcome to eat and drink on the bus.

Before your arrival, we'll discuss this mysterious stone circle in preparation for our arrival, so you have a good understanding of what you’re seeing.

There’ll be plenty of time to take some wonderful pictures, listen to the audio-guide and visit the gift shop, cafe and the new visitor centre. Your guide will be very interested to hear your thoughts, will answer questions about Stonehenge and tell you some of the more weird and wonderful stories you wouldn't otherwise have heard.

The scenic route to Bath takes just under an hour from Stonehenge. We’ll drive through some quintessential English villages and take the back roads to give you a taste of real rural England. You will get some fantastic views. Your guide will point out traditional English houses and talk about English country life.

On arrival we’ll drop you off close to the city centre with some recommendations of places to eat and drink and sights to see. Perhaps you might choose a typical English pub or cafe, or a quick and tasty pasty - a special type of local pie, perhaps washed down with a glass of famous local cider? Your guide will be on hand to advise what might be best for you! We'll also provide a handy map of Bath for you too.

After lunch your guide will offer you an optional guided walking tour of Bath, focusing on the history and highlights of the city, and the different incarnations of the baths through the ages - from the Celts, the Romans, the Georgians to the present day. You’ll have some free time to explore the city that inspired Charles Dickens and Jane Austen at your leisure before a driving tour on our route out to show you Bath’s finest streets including the best of all - The Royal Crescent.

It would be such a shame to come all this way and miss out on seeing some of the wonderful sights on offer between Bath and London. Heading back to London, via a few scenic back roads, we will stop at a secret place of your guide’s choice - we can’t tell you where, but we are certain you’ll LOVE it.

Dependent on traffic, we’ll get back to London between 8.15 - 8.30pm. Your guide will plan the route into London based on where you all want to go, and will endeavour to get you as close as possible to your destination. We will also always return to the areas you started the tour, if this is your best option. Speak with your guide so they can make sure you know exactly how to get to where you need to get to.

Entry: is it really free to enter Stonehenge on Summer/Winter solstice?

opening: what time do the gates normally open on Solstice?

Crowds: when would be the best time to arrive before the tsunami of people hits? I'd imagine the place will be crowded anytime of day, but if I can time it to when people are drifting in before it gets undoubtedly crowded, this will be the most ideal.

Travel: is it advisable to travel on the 20th and stop overnight, or is it fine to travel early in the morning and arrive around 11AM/12:00PM? will the site be too busy by this time?

if there's any solstice regulars who can help with this, I'd be very grateful!

People I know who do Solstices tell me that Avebury is a far more pleasant experience these days.

If you plan to arrive at that time, you are several hours too late for the solstice gathering (which is at sunrise).

And will the sky be cloudless or overcast ?
