Tongariro Crossing

The Tongariro Crossing was one of my highlights during my time in „Aotearoa“. The 7-hours-hike is exhausting but the view at the top is amazing and totally worth every step you have to take.

I will recommend to everyone to do the Tongariro crossing. Even if it’s quite a hard hike, it’s so worth it! I had never seen landscapes like those before. And thanks to Student Trips, you can end the day by laying in a spa pool and it’s something I will keep in mind after a day of hiking.

My time in New Zealand was absolutely surreal. My favorite student trip was easily the Tongariro Crossing, but my most impressionable memory was swimming amidst bioluminescence at Lonely Bay during an impromptu bonfire with 15 or so of the other interns.

I would definitely recommend Student Trips for your time in New Zealand if you want to experience fun activities in beautiful places and meet some awesome people who are also excited to explore this beautiful country!”

‘The life in New Zealand and the experiences with Student Trips completely changed my life. I’ve made friends for a lifetime and seen places most people can only dream about. Student Trips can really give you the ultimate internship experience and I recommend them and their services to everyone who wishes to explore the ways of the kiwi.

With Student Trips I experienced one of the greatest weekends during my time in NZ . The team was super relaxed and if were on the go, sitting in the Hot Pool or at a table in the evening, it was always in a good mood and with a lot of fun. Being able to join the group helped me connect in a social way and make good friends. Thank you Student Trips and keep it up!

The Student Horizons team provided excellent service pre-departure and were on hand to provide logistical support as the tour progressed. They offered flexibility when changes to the itinerary were required and were in regular communication with the different tour providers to ensure the tour ran smoothly… Student Horizons staff have always been accommodating and flexible and a pleasure to work with.

The entire tour was an absolute success. The real strength was not in the individual activities/workshops but in their overall range. Students all got something different from each of the workshops but overall had a positive experience at each. The performances and school exchanges were obvious highlights for the students.

My experience with Student Horizons was one I will not ever forget. This was my first tour and I am so excited to organize another one. The relationships that were built with the other schools and the development of my students in their personal lives as well as through their Netball was astounding. This will be a memory that will be kept with me forever. I am truly grateful for the experience I was able to provide my students and how professional Student Horizons were at organising this.

On behalf of the Padua Rugby Tour I would like to thank you for the once in a lifetime experience for the boys. From the Temple Bar to Rugby Club Versailles it was a full itinerary of great rugby, unbelievable culture and history and lots of laughs. We would personally like to congratulate Blair on his organisation and more importantly his friendship.

A very successful trip that engaged our musicians in the music and cultural of China.

Student Horizons helped make it possible for us as tour leaders to provide our students with an experience that challenged them and exposed them to some of the most significant architecture, galleries, museums across Europe. As leaders we were able to travel with the confidence that having an organisation like Student Horizons behind you gives. An excellent tour for both students and staff.

It was fantastic! well balanced with sports and sightseeing. The girls were kept busy but also had time to relax and enjoy their tour.

An amazing tour of memorable places made by the outstanding organisation of Student Horizons.

The overall service of our Sports and cultural tour of New Zealand was exceptional. The team at Student Horizons helped every step of the way. The attention to detail in all aspects from game days to activities ensured the students and staff were looked after.

Our tour was highly successful in terms of experiencing a new culture, developing young men and playing some enjoyable rugby. There were many good memories made on this trip which I know the boys will cherish for the rest of their lives.

It was an amazing experience and made so easy by Student Horizons. We didn’t have to worry about minor details but could ensure the students were having a great time on their tour. I haven’t stopped recommending Student Horizons since the last tour we did, two years ago, and I will continue to recommend them to anyone wanting to take students away.

In the spirit of reconciliation, Student Horizons acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

Trafalgar

  • Excellent - 1,893 reviews for New Zealand tours
Overall, we enjoyed our tour immensely – but with two (2) exceptions. FIRST: The day when the tour began we looked forward to going to an Australian indigenous museum. I believe it was called “Birrunga”. In particular and on the forms required to go on the tour, I highlighted my desire to learn about the Indigenous People (history, pictures, today in society, future and special beliefs). What we experienced on the tour was an Art exhibition by one artist who was very difficult to hear, who could not answer questions about his own people, who did not have handouts so we could understand some native words and pointed to pictures expressing his interpretation of a particular thought. Others on the tour felt the same way. Then we were taken back to the hotel and told the rest of the day we were on our own. SECOND: We were promised a trip to the exotic Whitsunday Island. We had heard from friends and through reading that this was a must for our tour. However, at the last minute (and almost exactly the last minute) we were told the trip to Whitsunday Island had been cancelled and we would receive a refund. Because of the late notification we were unable to make plans for the cancelled day. We tried to fill that day on our own with other excursions, like dinner cruises, etc. but they were all fully booked. And that was an entire day from tour that Trafalgar failed to meet their obligation. In speaking with other tour members who were upset, we interpreted your decision to cancel shocking, disappointing and not in line with the high expectations we had from your statements about the tour. We did not know if the Whitsunday excursion was cancelled because of mechanical reasons, crew problems, ship problems and were left with the impression we were cancelled because of the size of our group (13) and replaced by a larger group. Although you refunded our money for that, our tour day was lost. Not good! SUMMARY: Christin was wonderful throughout. Regarding the Whitsunday cancellation, she showed her understanding of our disappointment. However, as a result of these two issues, with special emphasis on Whitsunday, we feel Trafalgar did not live up to the high expectations you promised us.
Wonderful trip, Hope and Rick were amazing hosts.

Meals along the way were to rushed with having to find place to eat and eat before getting on the bus. Would be better for preorder, have in a cooler on the bus so we can just stop, relax and eat at nice spot along the way. Loved mix of internationals and ages in the group. Hostels were clean and well located. Guide was organized and kept group together and on time. Coordination and information dispensed was not good between TourRadar, Haka Tours and Intrepid. Questions asked kept being referred to be answered by actual guide when on the trip and felt I would have preferred to know what was possible (subject to weather) before arrival as response several times was advised this might not be tour for me.
Some of the hostels were dirty and far from centre, also arrived at hostels too late

we had a fabulous time! If there would be a complaint it would be that we had a lot more meals and fun than what was advertised. Can't compliment this trip enough!
Had not travelled with Scenic before however I am now a convert. Totally enjoyed the places we visited and the free choices available. Top class local guides and excellent activities. New Zealand itself is beautiful. We were a group of 40 and everyone was fabulous. Our tour director Sally was brilliant, totally in touch with everyone and very jolly all along. Very professional. Our driver Alan was also excellent, very knowledgeable on all the places we travelled through. What a lot of fun.

I had an amazing time, and recommend to anyone and everyone. Do it!
My 3-week trip to New Zealand was fantastic! We saw a lot of the country, even though it was during Christmas and New Year's. Some activities weren't available due to the holidays, but our guides, Ben and Tegan, made sure we had a great time regardless. Ben and Tegan were amazing, sharing interesting facts about New Zealand and keeping the trip fun. The tour offered good value, with nice accommodations (except for one place in Rotorua) and enjoyable included activities. Just keep in mind the cost of optional activities when planning your budget. Also, expect some long drives. Being at the back of the bus can make it hard to see the scenery. Overall, the trip was memorable, thanks to the careful planning and the effort of our guides to ensure we didn't miss out on the fun, despite the holiday season.

I thoroughly enjoyed my tour. The guide, Isobel, paid very good attention to details and the comfort of her tourists.I felt safe and secure in the bus as Mark's driving was very competent and Isobel was delightful, patient and full of fun, a real people person. She and Mark worked well together, meal times, departure times and other important information was provided well in advance. Good provision was made for frequent stops to allow for toilet breaks and the purchase of refreshments. I liked their attention to time keeping. For me, everything worked smoothly which made the tour relaxed and stress free. I would highly recommend Isobel and Mark.
New Zealand is a land with many places to see. It is a place rich in sites and in history, owing to the fact that two separate cultures have occupied the space. Fortunately our tour director and guide Chantavee was excellent at explaining both the history and providing context to the sites. I did not lower my reading due to the fact that the bus ride just sucked; it was a necessary part of the overall experience.

Haka Tours

  • Excellent - 355 reviews for New Zealand tours
this tour was just a huge disappointment, this is overpriced, unorganized and leaves you sorry for all the money you spent. of course the sights you will see are amazing, but the tour itself just makes you sad. the guide had absolutely no plan at anytime what was going on, due to this lack of organization, it was always quite hectic rushing from one place to the next. also I made bookings for activities back when I booked the tour itself months in advance, just to realize once I was at the activity it was not prebooked. here it’s advertised as 18-39, which was actually not true, more like an average of 45+. the hostels are not high-end, they are just normal average youth hostels. I did reach out to them on the second day, explaining the circumstances, but sadly did not receive a very constructive answer and no resulting action. honestly, I‘m just mad.
Everyday was different. A well planned out tour giving a rich experience. You want to know what Maori culture is in a short time? This is it!!!!!!

Globus

  • Excellent - 74,885 reviews for New Zealand tours
We are on the 20 day New Zealand - Australia tour. We do not recommend this tour. This review is sadly because our bus driver, Glenn, said quite a few obviously racist things about Indigenous Australians on our bus ride to and from Uluru. We have been on several Globus tours over the years, and we are very disappointed that Globus employs a company and people with this kind of harmful and backward thinking. On our trip to Uluru on Nov. 15., Glenn told us that Indigenous people are thieves. He said the Indigenous people specifically are responsible for theft in Alice Springs and along the highways. While passing Mount Ebenezer he told us that the Indigenous people are “true communists” and did a bad job running the gas station in the area, which caused the rest stop to close. Glenn then said that someone else tried to open the station again, but the Indigenous people “showed up with spears” and caused the new owner to close the gas station. He actually said, “showed up with spears.” Perhaps Glenn thinks that because it was a bus full of white people he could get away with being overtly racist. But no we are not ok with it. Racism is wrong. On this Globus trip in Australia we’ve had no access to an Indigenous Australian guide to give us a balanced viewpoint. Instead, we were given racist views about a group of people who were not there to defend themselves and add important context. I wrongly presumed we would be given some kind of properly assembled educational information about Indigenous Australian groups directly from Indigenous people, like we received in New Zealand. The “educational” video we watched on the bus to Uluru romanticized the colonization of Australia, depicting the English colonists as heroes and hard workers who earned their right to be here and makes no mention of how these colonists displaced the Indigenous people and basically stripped them of their land and culture. I had to google everything to learn more. This is literal whitewashing of history and distorts the reality of what happened. We are shocked at how blatantly outdated this driver and company are in the changing world.
Gets to the main places but not the best planned tour. Very compressed timelines for the trip, leave you feeling rushed through many destinations. Sometimes not even enough time to eat, or no place. No suggestions or prep from guide. And yet, there's a lot of time on the bus and/or the plane - 5 hour layover for a plane to get to the hotel at midnight. Often felt disorganized - I get everything had just reopened but seems the hotels were often unprepared for us coming, excursions that people had booked for months suddenly unavailable or not booked by company. Couldn't they call in advance, for example, to make sure there's enough food at a hotel dinner??? Tour guide wasn't great

Die Reise war super und für den kurzen Zeitraum hat man sehr viel von Neuseeland gesehen
It was my first time doing a tour like this with other people who I didn’t know. Our leader (Jess) broke the ice real quick and we all had a great time with her. Loads of stuff to do but it was also really easy to take yourself away for a bit if you needed. I booked onto another tour (Philippines) before this one had even finished because it was so good. Only thing I can suggest is having a different, longer version which includes things like the coromandel, Wellington, Franz Josef etc but couldn’t fault my experience and I am looking forward to coming back!

Education in New Zealand

Overseas school trips and exchanges

This guidance provides resources, advice and best practice for schools taking overseas trips.

  • Education outside the classroom guidance

Things to think about for your initial planning

Before you leave, during the trip, required ratios, temporary accommodation.

  • Risk assessment and emergencies

More information

Education outside the classroom guidelines.

'Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) Guidelines: Bringing the Curriculum Alive' is a document that supports the  teaching and learning of the national curriculum.

It has been developed to align with:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
  • The Vulnerable Children Act 2014.
  • The Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016.

The toolkit and and safety management plan contain a selection of sample forms and templates that reflect the current good practices and procedures for EOTC safety. These tools will to assist you in managing your trip and will help you meet your legal requirements and good practice responsibilities.

Download the guidelines

Download the guidelines and appendices from TKI.

EOTC guidelines – TKI (external link)

This information outlines good practice for the safety of students and successful learning outcomes while on an overseas school trip. It has been compiled as guidance only and should not be considered a substitute for legal or professional assessment of risks and requirements.

For advice on hosting visitors from overseas, see our guidance about international student visitors.

International student visitors

Know your school's policies and procedures

Ensure you are following any existing procedures laid down by the school. Your school will have a staff member responsible for ensuring that school activities are compliant with these policies.

If you are taking international students overseas, make sure you are also following the requirements of the Code of Practice.

Tertiary and International Learners Code of Practice – NZQA (external link)

Understand your legal obligations

Make sure you know what your obligations are when students are in your care. These will be outlined in the policies set by your school board.

You will find helpful information about this on student wellbeing page and on pages 41-50 and 52 of the education outside the classroom (EOTC) guidelines.

Student wellbeing

Familiarise yourself with your school’s emergency plan

Your school will have an emergency management plan in place for emergencies, traumatic incidents, evacuations and lockdowns.

These may be useful for planning emergency procedures while overseas.

Preparing for emergencies, traumatic incidents, evacuations and lockdowns

For more about emergency plans, see the advice below on risk assessments and emergency plans.

Risk assessments and emergency plans

Identify any potential health and safety risks

As part of your risk assessment, you need to be aware of health and safety risks and take appropriate action.

  • Make sure you have someone who is first aid certified.
  • Collect emergency contacts and health information for all students, staff and other adults on the trip.

For more information about how to undertake a risk assessment, see the information below and refer to the EOTC guidelines.

Learn about the destination and your accommodation

  • If you have not already visited the destination, ask about inspection visits.
  • If you know of another school that has been to the location before, consider contacting them to ask about their experience.
  • Check the SafeTravel website for up-to-date information about the destination. We recommend registering all students, staff, and other adults with SafeTravel before travelling.

Need a visa? – SafeTravel (external link)

Staff and supervision

Make sure there is an appropriate balance in terms of gender, experience and skills – for example, you should have someone in the group who holds a current first aid certificate.

See chapter 4 of the EOTC guidelines and Module 5 of the ako LMS for more information.

Module 5: Staffing and supervision – Ako LMS (external link)

  • See guidance below about appropriate adult-to-student ratios.
  • If parents or non-school staff will be supervising students, make sure you are familiar with them and make sure they are comfortable and appropriately prepared to have students in their care.

Get travel insurance

All students, staff and other adults should have appropriate insurance, including travel insurance (see below for more detail).

When choosing an insurance provider, ensure you make informed choices and that you clearly explain these to families.

Choose a bonded travel company

We recommend that you chose a bonded travel agent to protect against financial losses if refunds are needed.

Travel agents that are bonded through either the Travel Agents Association New Zealand (TAANZ) or the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will provide financial protection if the travel agent collapses and cannot provide refunds.

Bonded for your protection – TAANZ (external link)

When you choose a travel agent who is not a member of TAANZ or IATA, there is a higher risk of losing most of any deposits for travel if the agent has financial difficulty.

You should disclose the risk of non-bonded travel agents to families and the boards, and get agreements from them if you use a non-bonded agent.

Passports and visa requirements

Make sure that all students, staff and other adults on the trip:

  • have passports that are valid for at least 6 months from departure
  • have the appropriate visas to leave and re-enter New Zealand (if not citizens).

Check the visa and entry requirements for the destination country and ensure that all people on the trip have appropriate visas if needed.

Some people on the trip may have passports from another country, so they may require different visas than those with a New Zealand passport.

For more information see the SafeTravel website. You can check entry requirements with your travel agent or using the tool on the Air New Zealand website.

International travel requirements – Air New Zealand (external link)

Communicate what the cost of the trip will include

You must clearly communicate with students and family which activities or amenities are included in the cost and which are additional. For example, ski trip prices often only cover the cost of two-hour morning lessons; afternoon lessons are extra.

If food, transport, or accommodation are not included in the cost of the trip, you must ensure that all students, staff, and other adults on the trip are able to cover the costs of these things themselves.

Make sure the trip is suitable for all students

Take account of age, gender, accessibility and diverse needs.

  • whether all students will be able to fully participate in the activities planned
  • the cultural or religious backgrounds of the people on the trip or any past experiences that may be significant and make sure that all activities are appropriately respectful.

See the guides on the Inclusive Education website recognising and planning for the needs of diverse learners.

Guides – Inclusive Education (external link)

Consider a payment schedule

Families may find it difficult to cover the full costs of a trip in one payment. You can set up a payment schedule to provide options for families to pay in instalments. Any payment schedule should be outlined with the school and the family as part of the agreement to attend the trip or exchange.

If staff, students, or other adults on the trip will be given money to spend while away, make sure they keep receipts or a record of their expenses.

What to communicate

Make sure you are regularly communicating with parents.

You will need to clearly outline:

  • details of the staff and adults who will be accompanying the trip
  • what the payment schedule is and how much it is, including a clear indication if deposits are non-returnable (for example, for travel, accommodation, activities)
  • details of what is and what is not covered by the cost
  • decisions about insurance and what is included/excluded
  • whether the travel agent is bonded, and the risks of a non-bonded agent
  • advice on appropriate clothing and pocket money
  • the itinerary, including departure and arrival details
  • accommodation details
  • any possible dangers and risks you have identified – including cancellations
  • the school’s emergency plan
  • discipline and appropriate sanctions
  • details of travel arrangements, including any en route accommodation
  • the date of the family information evening (if any)
  • how you will provide receipts or cost breakdowns for payments made by families.

What information and documents to collect

You will need the following information and documentation from families and students:

  • an emergency contact name and number both at home and away
  • a consent form which details any special medical and diet information and gives permission to take appropriate emergency measures
  • passport and visa details
  • any medical and travel insurance requirements.

Involve staff and supervisors

Teamwork and leadership are vital ingredients for a successful trip.

  • Have regular team meetings and ensure all staff are consulted about arrangements.
  • If possible, include families in some of these conversations, particularly for longer or overseas trips.

Regularly update your risk assessment

Make sure you regularly update your risk assessment to meet individual students' needs.

Meet with relevant staff and family members if you are concerned about a student. For example, an additional member of staff might be needed to assist with students with disabilities or other learning needs.

Find out more about supporting students with diverse needs on the learning support page.

Learning support

Supervision

  • Regularly do a headcount of students, particularly when getting on and off transport. Always get another member of staff to check.
  • Ensure reasonable supervision at all times. Allocate groups of students to individual staff members; this helps rapid communication of information.
  • Ensure students understand and apply travel safety requirements, for example, using seat belts on coaches.
  • Always keep students informed of reasons for delays or sudden changes of plan. This will help keep students calm if there are unexpected changes and they can update their guardians if necessary.
  • Make sure students are aware of Customs and biosecurity requirements and the penalties that underpin them before departure and for the return trip to New Zealand.

Accommodation

  • On arrival at the accommodation, update your risk assessment. Consider a fire practice if you can do so without disturbing other guests, and check entries and exits to rooms.
  • Take care when allocating students to rooms. There needs to be a balance between students’ preferences and the need to ensure good order and safety.
  • Let students know who they can talk to privately if they have concerns or are feeling unsafe. Consider informing students and families about room allocations before the trip if possible.
  • Take similar care in allocating staff members and other adults.
  • Advise students to take care of their belongings and offer to lock valuables in staff rooms or in the hotel safe.
  • Make sure rooms are checked for pre-existing damage and report it to the accommodation manager.
  • Arrange a meeting with students to reinforce the code of conduct, identify out-of-bounds areas, map out the programme for the week and agree on bedtimes.
  • Let the tour reps or hotel managers know of any concerns you may have, particularly if you think they compromise student safety.
  • Do not change the planned programme or accept enforced changes without good reason. If possible, communicate any changes to parents.
  • Consider the insurance implications of your liability as a party leader. For example, many insurance companies do not cover human error. This may be covered by school insurance for professional liability.
  • If you are unsure of how to deal with a problem on the trip, consult your team or contact your school for advice. A school should ideally provide an emergency contact so that you can make contact in the event of an emergency.

Returning home

  • In the last stages of the journey home, ensure that students can contact home to provide an expected time of arrival.
  • On arrival, staff must stay with students until they are collected.
  • Contact family members if they are late to pick up a student.

Insurance should cover the following aspects at a minimum.

Health cover

  • Medical expenses incurred for the treatment of illness and/or injury that requires surgery and/or hospitalisation – unlimited sum insured.
  • Medical evacuation related to serious illness and injuries – unlimited sum insured, include emergency dental treatment.
  • Costs for family members’ travel in the event that the student suffers a serious illness or injury.

Repatriation, search and rescue

  • Repatriation and expatriation in the event a student has to return home following an injury or illness.
  • Return of mortal remains/funeral expenses - including travel costs for family members, repatriation of remains and funeral costs, search-and-rescue operation costs incurred to locate the insured.

Travel into and out of New Zealand

  • Missed flights or delays for travel into and out of New Zealand.
  • Medical expenses incurred for the treatment of an illness and injury incurred during the travel.

Personal liability

  • Negligence causing bodily injury (including death) of another person or loss of or damage to property.

Party leader liability

Depending on the circumstances, party leader liability may not be covered by travel insurance but may be by Risk Management Scheme or private insurance programme for schools.

We recommend you check the insurance policy with your insurance providers. Situations may include but not limited to costs from missed flights and transport or misjudgements by a party leader.

Unforeseen circumstances

Depending on the nature, cost, and length of the trip, you might consider insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances such as natural disasters, event cancellation or global pandemic.

Unforeseen circumstances insurance is not essential but you may want to consider it for trips with high costs, reliance on external bodies, tight timeframes or higher risks.

A ratio compares the number of skilled and experienced supervisors to the number of students or participants involved in an event.

Ratios will vary according to the age and needs of students, the nature of the activity, the location, the competence of the students and the staff involved.

See chapter 4 of the EOTC guidelines:

Ratios for overseas trips, remote environments or hazardous activities should match the increased level of risk involved.

If in doubt, be conservative and/or seek professional advice when deciding on an appropriate supervision plan, including ratios.

A list of professional national bodies can be found here:

EOTC programme contacts – TKI (external link)

When a student or group is not able to stay at accommodation arranged by their school/trip organiser for any reason, they may need to stay somewhere else temporarily.

Reasons to need temporary accommodation include (but not limited to):

  • booked flights/transport have been delayed/cancelled
  • student(s) had urgent medical treatments
  • trips have been disturbed by national disasters/civil unrest.

Trip organisers must take a robust approach to determine that temporary accommodation and accompanying supervision is suitable.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • assessing the suitability
  • ensuring that students have appropriate supervision
  • ensuring the group students have an appropriate ratio of supervisors
  • monitoring and managing any risks to the safety of students.

Risk management and emergencies

Risk management will help to reduce the likelihood and severity of serious and adverse health and safety outcomes when hosting or taking a school trip.

Schools and trip leaders need to ensure that risks are known, assessed and managed.

You can use this risk management checklist to help you get started. Your school board should also have a set of health and safety guidelines for you to follow.

Student travel insurance

Heading overseas in your younger years is an unforgettable experience. But with so much to plan and so much to look forward to, it’s easy to overlook one of the most important things to pack: travel insurance.

students taking a selfie

Do students need travel insurance overseas?

Nothing can derail your trip like a broken arm, a lost passport or a cancelled flight, which is why every student heading overseas should purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

But as every traveller knows, medical emergencies are far from the only risk when heading overseas. Pickpockets, scammers, cancelled flights and natural disasters can all turn your trip of a lifetime into one to forget, so when you shop for travel insurance, make sure you choose an option with a comprehensive range of benefits.

What does SCTI cover you for?

Our International Comprehensive policy provides students with comprehensive cover for their journeys overseas. All of our International Comprehensive customers also gain access to our worldwide emergency assistance team, who are ready to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our International Comprehensive travel insurance includes cover for:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while on your journey
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • Damaged or lost baggage
  • Personal items if they are stolen or damaged
  • Rental car excess should you have an accident
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Funeral costs

Student travellers waiting at the train station

What doesn’t your insurance cover?

When you shop around for travel insurance, make sure that you’re aware of the activities that aren't covered in your policy before you buy.

For example, our International Comprehensive policy doesn’t cover you for outdoor rock climbing, base jumping or kitesurfing. On the other hand, it does cover you for on-piste skiing and snowboarding, bungy jumping and windsurfing! As you can see, it’s important to understand  what your insurance does and doesn’t cover.

A general rule to remember is that travel insurance is there to protect you from unexpected events, which is why most policies won’t cover you for:

  • Breaking the law
  • Being under the influence of alcohol or non-prescribed drugs
  • Ignoring 'Avoid non-essential travel' or ‘Do not travel’ ratings on  safetravel.govt.nz
  • Loss, damage or theft of unattended luggage
  • Loss that happens because of an event that was predicted before you bought your policy
  • Pre-existing medical conditions  that you don’t declare when buying your policy

Tips for staying safe overseas

Ideally, your travel will go off without a hitch and you won’t need to claim for any lost phones, damaged laptops or cancelled flights. The best way to avoid setbacks like these is to brush up on your travel safety.
