The squash section of Umhlali Country Club has always enjoyed a reputation as being very sociable, fun-loving and family orientated, as well as being very hospitable when hosting other players from other clubs.

The squash section enjoys the best courts and club house facilities in the region. With improvements in place Umhlali began to attract many new members which enabled the section to compete strongly in the Dolphin Coast Squash Summer and Winter Leagues.

The club has 2 AAA rated Greens competition greens which are recognised by Bowls South Africa for national competitions. The greens were named after Hackland and Sclanders, after past members who contributed to the maintenance and construction of the greens.

In 2004 the UCC Bowls Section had a membership of 78 members. When the Salt Rock bowls club closed down the membership increased to 100. We have since increased to an astounding 209 members. We have players who have represented national, provincial and district teams.

During the 2007 renovation, the clubhouse verandah was extended and closed in and a bar was built to accommodate the increasing numbers.

In 2010, Bowls South Africa used our greens and facilities to hold the Play-Off’s and finals of the National Mixed Pairs Championships. This was quite an achievement for a relatively small club.

The roots of Umhlali Country Club’s Tennis section go way back many years ago before the concrete slabs were laid and five courts were erected in 1961 when the club was formed.

Once the old Umhlali Tennis Club was dissolved and in effect became the tennis section of Umhlali Country Club in 1961. Through the 1970’s and 1980’s the tennis section was well established with the traditional senior and junior tournaments continuing and local players enjoying their social tennis an some league tennis. For many years the Umhlali team dominated the league.

The 90’s saw the arrival of the club’s first resident coach – Roger Ferrandi (082 791 3326), who to this day still runs a successful academy and tournaments.

Since then a few changes have been made to their schedule. A group of Men have started playing on a Tuesday afternoon. We now hold social tennis on Saturdays from 1pm. The ladies play on a Tuesday and Friday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal’s most popular golf club is the venue for the Sunshine Tour’s SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya for the second year in a row.

Umhlali Country Club’s vision is to be the venue of choice for sports and recreation on the KZN North Coast, and if its high membership numbers are anything to go by, it is certainly achieving this.

Peter Matkovich, who was the greenkeeper at Umhlali in the early 1980s, rebuilt the nine-hole course into the magnificent layout it is today. With beautiful trees framing the sloping fairways and occasional water hazards, this course keeps players on their toes.

It is characteristically varied, providing a fantastic golfing test over the relatively short distance. There is also an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna and the course has simply been sculpted around the inherent beauty of the region.

Standout holes include the par-three fourth which is played from an elevated hillside tee to a green fronted by a large water hazard, and the risk-and-reward par-four 14th which brings water, trees and sand into play from the tee.

The toughest hole on the course is the 422m par-four 15th, which starts with a demanding drive with out of bounds to the right, and a water hazard and a tree to the left. The par-three 18th, played from a high tee to a green in front of the clubhouse, is a memorable closing hole.

It is not only on the course where Umhlali excels, though. In 2016 and 2019 they won the annual John Collier environmental award. They also won the Club Management Association of Southern Africa’s Club of the Year award in 2019 and 2022.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The 2022 SunBet Challenge – Sun Sibaya was the first Sunshine Tour event to be held at Umhlali. It was won by Dylan Naidoo, who celebrated his maiden Sunshine Tour victory after finishing on six-under 207.
• Umhlali also has a tennis club with five courts, plus two squash courts and two AAA-rated bowling greens.
• Umhlali Country Club was ranked 67th in South Africa’s Top 100 Courses this year, a climb of three places from 2022.

Umhlali CC & Golf Estate is the most popular golf course in KwaZulu-Natal in terms of rounds played every year. This busy and enterprising North Coast sports club caters for 1500 members in a variety of leisure pursuits.

Umhlali again won the 2023 CMASA Club of the Year award, and the Best of Ballito Awards named it the best golf course, best sports and coaching club in the North Coast area.

The club has humble origins, having started life in 1961 with a rural 9-holer serving local farmers. Today it sits on the quiet inland side of the N2 highway adjoining the booming coastal town of Ballito, which boasts three residential golf estates.

Course designer Peter Matkovich was the greenkeeper at Umhlali in the early 1980s and rebuilt the 9-holer into an attractive modern layout during that decade. He has always lived in the Ballito area, and over the years has made numerous improvements to the course which has seen it grow in stature and popularity. It’s jam-packed in the December/January holidays.

The beauty of Umhlali lies in its magnificent trees framing the fairways, and rolling terrain which has helped create some outstanding golf holes. The back nine flows through a beautiful indigenous forest. It’s under 6 000 metres from the back tees, an easy walk, yet the sloping ground, smallish greens, and occasional water hazards make it both a fun and challenging test. It has a high Slope rating. The paspalum greens have an excellent reputation.

A major transformation of the club came in 2015 when the clubhouse was revamped and modernised, enhancing the entrance, reception area and pro shop. MammaG’s handle food and beverage.

The Club Management Association of SA (CMASA) chose Umhlali as the 2019 Club of the Year. It achieved a remarkable score of 96.5% in seven different pillars.

Feature Holes

The par-3 fourth is one of the most exciting and challenging short holes in KZN, played from an elevated hillside tee to a green fronted by a large water hazard. It’s 181 metres from the back tee. The par 3s are all memorable, and the round ends with the 182m 18th, again from a high tee to a green in front of the clubhouse. Matkovich created a superb risk-and-reward 280m par 4 at 14 which brings water, trees and sand into play from the tee. The 489m tenth is a terrific par 5, from a high tee into a curving fairway, with water on the right.

SUNSHINE TOUR

Umhlali hosted its first Sunshine Tour event in October 2022, won by Dylan Naidoo on six-under 207. Martin Rohwer won the 2023 title on 208.

Did You Know

1/  Umhlali is a busy country club, with 1500 members, also home to bowls (two greens), tennis (five courts) and squash (two).

2/ Caring for the environment is important at Umhlali. The club received the John Collier Award for good governance and environmental compliance in both 2016 and 2019, plus a special mention in 2017. It’s the only KZN club to have been honoured.

3/ Part of the course, mostly on the front nine, is devoted to estate living, with 302 homes.

4/ Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini won the SA Women’s Strokeplay title at Umhlali in 2012, and the club hosted the 2014 SA Boys Championship, with Tristen Strydom (strokeplay) and Paul Boshoff (matchplay) the champions.

5/  General manager Derick Reinke, a Fellow PGA pro, was KZN PGA Pro of the Year in 2016 and 2018, plus KZN PGA Manager of the Year in 2017 and 2021.

Naidoo leads SunBet Challenge

The wind got up on the back nine but so did Dylan Naidoo, as the promising young golfer soared to the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya at the Umhlali Country Club on Wednesday.

Naidoo was level par after the front nine, but blazed his way back to the clubhouse with five birdies, picking up back-to-back shots on both the 10th and 11th holes and the last two holes of his round, for a five-under-par 66.

This left him one stroke clear of the group of six golfers on four-under-par 67 – Nikhil Rama, Kyle McClatchie, Jaco Prinsloo, Rhys West, Richard Joubert and Lindani Ndwandwe.

The patience the 24-year-old showed in not letting the back-to-back bogeys he made on the par-five 5th and par-three 6th holes lead to frustration was the most impressive aspect of his round.

“On the front nine the weather was pretty benign, but I knew the wind would pick up,” Naidoo said. “After the bogeys, you start thinking, ‘I’m one over on the easy bit where there’s no wind’, but I was playing super-solid golf and I’d had a couple of unlucky breaks.

“So, I just needed to keep playing the way I’d been playing and it all fell into place nicely on the back nine. I’ve been playing really well lately and it’s just that final part on the scoreboard that’s lacking.

“But you can’t force things, you have to let the score happen. You can’t take on flags that you don’t need to because that just leads to compounding errors instead of multiplying birdies.

“You don’t have to play perfect golf to be at the top of the leaderboard, and I’ve shown nice progression in understanding that. Long may it continue.”

Umhlali Country Club was established in 1960 as a nine-hole course, but the acquisition of the design services of Peter Matkovich in 1970 led to the birth of the current 18-hole course. It may be short, but it is undulating and there is plenty of water, so the golfers are going to earn their keep in this three-round, R1-million Sunshine Tour event.
