Printemps de bourges in bourges, france on sat, 08 apr 1989.

Shaun arrived on stage with a bottle of water. He was completly drunk and falled unable to sing. The guitarist replaced him. Big deception

West End Centre in Aldershot, UK on Mon, 18 Mar 1985

I attended this show, the first time I’d seen The Pogues. I was twelve days off my twenty-first birthday and six months into my training as a mental health nurse. As I recall the ticket was a birthday present from my friends, who I went to the gig with. What a riot! Everything I expected it to be and more. As I recall , I won a gallon of beer in a cat food eating competition, which supplemented our meagre spending money and enabled us to get pretty pissed. Spider gave me a swig from the half bottle he had… he’d given up playing and was sat on the edge of the stage. I bought a copy of ‘Red Roses for Me’ ,at the show, autographed by the band, which I still have. It remains one of my most prized possessions. Great to see the photos on your site.. brought back some memories. I saw the band a few more times, notably at Surrey Free Arts Festival, where they were joined by Joe Strummer (same year or’86) and Shane with The Popes at Leeds Heineken gig, Roundhay Park (possibly’92) singing ‘Good Golly, Miss Molly’ repeatedly until the plug was pulled! RIP Shane McGowan. Thank you for the music. George Atkinson, Leeds.

Riviera Theatre in Chicago, US on Wed, 02 Oct 1991

Joe Strummer was epic. Clash tunes played , with all the Irish Trad instruments. Brilliant 👌

The Vic Theatre in Chicago, US on Sat, 05 Dec 1987

Shane MacGowan was utterly brilliant that night.Greatest live performance I ever saw, kudos to the Pogues and Joe Strummer. The floor was a delirious mosh pit of frenzied bodies where pulsating Irish trad met Punk anarchy head on.Intoxicated brilliance was never more intoxicatingly brilliant!

Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, UK on Thu, 11 Oct 1990

I was there with my wife and some friends. It was a brilliant night with all the standard hits plus some lesser known ones. Shane was pretty drunk and often went off or sat down and his voice was all over the place but still somehow brilliant. Being in our twenties we were in the thick of the mosh pit and I broke my glasses when they fell off. Shane came back on for the encore - The band played waltzing Matilda - perhaps the most moving performance of any song I have ever heard. I cried, everyone cried, his voice sent shivers down your spine. At the end the cheers went on forever. We all thought that could be his last show but history says otherwise. I've never been to a more emotional gig

Baths Hall in Scunthorpe, UK on Sun, 04 Dec 1988

I was there by chance, my irish family living in scunthorpe told me of this charity concert for mo gale, before there uk tour,. What a great suprize to see kirsty macColl as a guest appearance. It' was a fantastic night, did not come on stage till 11pm probably having a few refreshments, Shane was spot on with his vocals, not a lot of people new about the gig because it wasn't a sell out. one of the best pogues gigs out of em all that I attended

Barrowland in Glasgow, UK on Sun, 17 Mar 1991

I have never in my life been so anxious about attending a gig. Seeing The Pogues in my favourite venue on St Patrick’s Day would normally be a match made in heaven, but on this occasion there was a caveat. The ‘Old Firm’ as they were called then - Celtic & Rangers - had been drawn together in the Scottish Cup and they were playing earlier that day at Celtic Park. My mate - Brian - and I had tickets for both, but our team Celtic were going through a sticky patch at that time. A defeat in the Glasgow Derby on St Patrick’s day would have led to the gig being a wake. As it transpired the game will go down in history as one of the greatest ever Old Firm games as Celtic overturned the odds to record a memorable victory with four red cards issued on the day. The atmosphere when we eventually reached the Barras was electric. I have never been at a gig where so many of the audience were there so early and the party was in full swing an hour before the Pogues hit the stage. Shane McGowan was stone cold sober and revelled in the atmosphere; Spider had clearly over-indulged, but the gig was an absolute triumph. Chuck in appearances by both the recently released Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill of the Guildford Four on stage and you have the concert goers version of having all your ducks in a row. At times it felt like simultaneously the roof would come off and the floor give way, but had that happened such was the heaving mass of humanity on display I suspect we would have remained suspended in mid air, floating on the cloud of our collective elation. Today we mourn the loss of the ringmaster on that occasion - Shane McGowan - but there will be smiles to match the tears of mourning and gratitude for a life fully lived. 🙏

My first and one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Riverside 1 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK on Thu, 04 Dec 1997

With the passing of Shane, I recall this concert as one of thee BEST I have ever witnessed. Shane went awol, found then plonked on stage some 90 mins after the scheduled start time. His eyes closed, griping the mic, he was out of it! But the music started and he was off, never missing a beat, screeching and hollering, feeding off the crowd. What a performance. What a gig. What a memory. Gartha Shane.

O2 Forum Kentish Town in London, UK on Fri, 17 Dec 1993

I was there, ages ago...it was a great show.

The Pogues: Why The Celtic Punk Rebels Will Never Fall From Grace

The Pogues: Why The Celtic Punk Rebels Will Never Fall From Grace

With their unique blend of Anglo-Irish folk-punk, The Pogues created a new type of rebel music that still sounds revolutionary today.

Rowdy, rebellious and volatile, Irish band The Pogues somehow succeeded in spite of themselves. Initially naming themselves the deliberately provocative Pogue Mahone (Irish Gaelic for “kiss my arse”), the group revelled in their outsiders’ credo, yet their unique blend of punk-inflected Irish folk music connected with the mainstream and resulted in one of the most potent bodies of work known in any genre of music.

The Irish rover: Shane MacGowan’s early years

The “punk” part of The Pogues’ equation shaped their initial stance. Future Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan latched onto first-wave punk outfits such as The Clash and The Damned during their early days and – as Shane O’Hooligan – he formed his own punk/new wave outfit, The Nipple Erectors. Building a local following, the band played London punk haunt The Roxy and, after rebranding themselves as The Nips, released several promising singles, including Gabrielle and the Paul Weller-produced Happy Song.

MacGowan, however, had a markedly different background from most of his punk-era peers. Born to Irish parents in the English county of Kent, on Christmas Day 1957, he spent much of his early childhood in County Tipperary, Ireland. After winning a literature scholarship, he attended London’s Westminster School, where he was frequently bullied due to his looks and accent. Seeking refuge, the teenage MacGowan took to wandering London’s streets and found himself drawn to the capital’s less salubrious sights, among them the peep shows and strips joints of Soho. Much of what MacGowan witnessed in pre-gentrified London may not have been pleasant, but he later drew upon those experiences to illuminate some of his most singular songs.

Boys from the county hell: forming The Pogues

In addition to punk, MacGowan’s background had exposed him to traditional Irish folk songs from an early age. Accordingly, when he formed the band with like-minded musicians Peter “Spider” Stacy (on tin whistle), his future co-writer Jem Finer (banjo) and The Nips’ latter-day guitarist turned accordion player James Fearnley, MacGowan sought to create music fuelled by punk’s refusenik tendencies, but also the fire and erudition of Irish folk.

Even allowing for the addition of bassist Cait O’Riordan and drummer Andrew Ranken, the bands unlikely musical line-up immediately set them apart from the rock acts of the day, and their achievements are thrown into even sharper relief when you consider that glossy, radio-friendly pop acts such as New Romantic icons Duran Duran , Spandau Ballet and ABC ruled the airwaves when MacGowan’s team made their live debut at The Pindar Of Wakefield (now The Water Rats) in London’s King’s Cross in October 1982.

Despite their largely acoustic initial line-up, the band still rocked harder than most of their contemporaries, and their rousing, John Peel-endorsed debut single, Dark Streets Of London, led to a record deal (initially with Stiff, then Warner Bros) resulting in a series of reputation-enhancing records.

“We followed Shane like children following the Pied Piper”

Attracting widespread attention, the band’s 1984 debut album, Red Roses For Me , took its title from a late-era Sean O’Casey play and presented a heady mix of reimagined Irish ballads (Poor Paddy, Waxie’s Dargle, a stark adaptation of Brendan Behan’s Dublin prison ode, The Auld Triangle) and vivid, MacGowan-penned set pieces such as Boys From The County Hell, the rampaging Streams Of Whiskey and the triumphant Transmetropolitan.

Revisiting the creation of the latter song in his memoir, Here Comes Everybody: The Story Of The Pogues , James Fearnley called it “a generous and degenerate” song, adding, “It brought us all together, in our second-hand suits, lumberjack shirts and Fred Perrys, with our outmoded instruments. It pressed us to march across London, following Shane, like the children following the Pied Piper out of Hamelin.”

MacGowan’s brilliantly-realised immigrant songs tapped into his experiences in both rural Ireland and inner-city London, and they had the same galvanic effect on the band’s nascent audience as they did on his bandmates. Red Roses For Me was a great start, but MacGowan’s songwriting truly blossomed on the band’s second album, 1985’s widely-acclaimed Rum Sodomy & The Lash .

“The best lyric writer of our generation”

Produced by Elvis Costello, Rum Sodomy & The Lash album captured The Pogues at the top of their game and featured several of McGowan’s greatest songs. Also referencing the celebrated tenors Count John McCormack and Richard Tauber, the album’s dramatic opening cut, The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn, brought the story of the legendary titular Celtic warrior kicking and screaming into the modern day. Its lyric was stuffed with memorably visceral imagery (“And in the Euston Tavern, you screamed it was your shout/But they wouldn’t give you service, so you kicked the windows out”), though it paled by comparison with the brutal realism of The Old Main Drag – a brilliant, if stomach-churning, evocation of life among the teenage rent boys that once haunted London’s Piccadilly Circus by night.

Elsewhere on the album, the rambunctious drinking ode Sally MacLennane mirrored the Irish folk song tradition for celebrating a person’s return to their homeland (a theme also touched upon in Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back In Town, written by the group’s similarly Irish literature-influenced Phil Lynott), though the bruised romanticism of A Pair Of Brown Eyes also showed MacGowan was capable of penning songs of great tenderness. Indeed, his reputation as a lyricist of distinction grew rapidly among his contemporaries.

“I regard Shane as easily the best lyric writer of our generation,” Nick Cave later told The Observer . “He has a very natural, unadorned, crystalline way with language. There is a compassion in his words that is always tender, often brutal, and always completely his own.”

On the lash: mainstream success

Helped along by reviews such as NME ’s, which proclaimed it “probably the best LP of 1985”, Rum Sodomy & The Lash established The Pogues as one of the decade’s most important bands. Over the next few years, they went from strength to strength.

After a line-up reshuffle which saw guitarist Phil Chevron and multi-instrumentalist Terry Woods swell the ranks, and Darryl Hunt replace Cait O’Riordan on bass, the band secured their place in the pantheon with their 1987 Christmas smash, Fairytale Of New York , featuring MacGowan’s seemingly ageless duet with Kirsty MacColl. However, the song’s parent album, If I Should Fall From Grace With God , featured a slew of MacGowan-penned classics, ranging from the hard-hitting polemic of Birmingham Six to the cinematic sweep of The Broad Majestic Shannon and the rollicking, Clash-like title track.

The Pogues famously celebrated the success of If I Should Fall From Grace With God with a sell-out seven-night stand at London’s Town & Country Club around St Patrick’s Day 1988. By the end of the decade, they’d graduated to playing arenas. Broadly poppier and mainstream in design, their two final MacGowan-helmed albums, Peace & Love and Hell’s Ditch , saw their mercurial frontman’s influence diminish within the band, though his later songs, such as White City, the Christy Brown-referencing Down All The Days and the nightmarish, Spanish Civil War-inspired Lorca’s Novena showed his lyrics were still liberally streaked with his singular talent.

Red roses for them: influence and legacy

The Pogues parted ways with MacGowan during the summer of 1991, but by then they’d built up a formidable, legend-enshrining body of work which had also set in stone MacGowan’s reputation as a trailblazing musician and writer – both at home and abroad. But even while The Pogues’ star was in the ascendency, their influence was felt on home turf, with a small coterie of London-based Celtic-tinged roots-rock outfits such as The Boothill Foot Tappers and The Men They Couldn’t Hang breaking through in their wake. Initially featuring The Nips’ Shanne Bradley on bass, the latter outfit also released a string of impressive albums, with their 1984 debut, Night Of A Thousand Candles , including a sublime cover of Eric Bogle’s legendary World War I lament, The Green Fields Of France.

Across the Atlantic, though, The Pogues’ pioneering work has had a lasting effect, with the 90s seeing the emergence of a host of US bands clearly influenced by the band’s musical, lyrical and conceptual qualities. Among this considerable number are Canadian acts such as The Mahones and Great Big Sea, though it’s US bands Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys that have gone on to enjoy sustained international acclaim.

The former have released widely lauded albums such as Swagger and Drunken Lullabies , which share thematic subjects with The Pogues – among them Irish history and politics – while Dropkick Murphys (who hail from Massachusetts, home to a substantial population of Irish Americans) have enjoyed Billboard hits with albums such as 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory . They also enjoyed a run-in with Hollywood when their potent, Pogues-esque reimagining of Woody Guthrie’s I’m Shipping Up To Boston featured in the soundtrack for William Monahan’s 2006’s Academy Award-winning crime thriller, The Departed .

“A truly great artist and an amazing man”

Almost four decades after they emerged from squat-level life in London and set about assembling a spectacular body of work, The Pogues are as popular as ever, and their best work earns Shane MacGowan the right to hear his name mentioned in the same breath as the Irish literary giants he’s frequently referenced along the way.

“Shane’s writing and performing spoke to me as a young Irishman alone in London and trying to find his way,” Avengers Endgame star Tom Vaughan-Lawlor said during The Late Late Show ’s 2019 MacGowan tribute. “He has that special gift that makes you feel like he’s speaking to and for your soul alone. It’s one of the many reasons why he’s a truly great artist and an amazing man.”

Fairytale of New York: the story behind the Pogues' classic Christmas anthem

Once upon a time a band set out to make a Christmas song. Not about snow or sleigh rides or mistletoe or miracles, but lost youth and ruined dreams. A song in which Christmas is as much the problem as it is the solution. A kind of anti-Christmas song that ended up being, for a generation, the Christmas song.

That song, Fairytale of New York by the Pogues , has just been reissued to mark its 25th anniversary; it has already re-entered the Top 20 every December since 2005, and shows no sign of losing its appeal. It is loved because it feels more emotionally "real" than the homesick sentimentality of White Christmas or the bullish bonhomie of Merry Xmas Everybody , but it contains elements of both and the story it tells is an unreal fantasy of 1940s New York dreamed up in 1980s London. The story of the song is a yarn in itself: how it took more than two years to get right and became, over time, far bigger than the people who made it. As Pogues accordion-player James Fearnley says: "It's like Fairytale of New York went off and inhabited its own planet."

Appropriately for a song that pivots on an argument, there is disagreement as to where the idea originated. Fearnley, who recently published a memoir, Here Comes Everybody: The Story of the Pogues , remembers manager Frank Murray suggesting that they cover the Band's 1977 song Christmas Must be Tonight . "It was an awful song. We probably said, fuck that, we can do our own."

Singer Shane MacGowan maintains that Elvis Costello , who produced the Pogues' 1985 masterpiece Rum, Sodomy & the Lash, wagered the singer that he couldn't write a Christmas duet to sing with bass player (and Costello's future wife) Cait O'Riordan.

Either way, a Christmas song was a good idea. "For a band like the Pogues, very strongly rooted in all kinds of traditions rather than the present, it was a no-brainer," says banjo-player and co-writer Jem Finer. Not to mention the fact that MacGowan was born on Christmas Day 1957.

The Pogues had formed amid the grimy pubs and bedsits of London's King's Cross in 1982. Although their name ("Pogue mahone" means "kiss my arse" in Gaelic) and many of their influences were Irish, most of the band weren't, and their interest in folk songs and historical narratives roamed far and wide. They aspired to timelessness.

'It's for the underdog' … Kirsty MacColl and Shane MacGowan promote Fairytale of New York.

Finer first tried writing a song about a sailor missing his wife at Christmas but that was dashed on the rocks by his own wife, Marcia Farquhar, who called it "corny", says Finer. "So I said OK, you suggest a storyline and I'll write another one. The basic plotline came from her: this idea of a couple falling on hard times and coming eventually to some redemption." He says there's a "secret history" to the story: "a true story of some mutual friends living in New York."

MacGowan, whose contribution to this piece comes in the form of a dialogue written by long-term partner and biographer Victoria Mary Clarke, declines to elaborate: "Really, the story could apply to any couple who went anywhere and found themselves down on their luck."

While Finer retained the uptempo reel from his abandoned maritime tale, MacGowan worked on the slower verses and chorus. The singer had never seen New York but it was on his mind. As the Pogues toured Europe in autumn 1985, they almost wore out a video of Once Upon a Time in America , Sergio Leone's epic tale of Jewish mobsters in interwar New York. (Ennio Morricone's elegiac title theme seeped into Fairytale's opening melody: don't all good fairytales start with "Once upon a time"?)

In Here Comes Everybody, Fearnley writes: "A stable perception was never reachable as to whether Shane was a genius or a fucking idiot." There is the public image of MacGowan as a wayward alcoholic with a bombsite of a mouth and a wheezing ghost of a laugh. Then there is the clever, diligent craftsman who sweated for two years to make Fairytale of New York perfect.

The first demo was recorded by Costello at the same time as The cinematic romance of A Rainy Night in Soho , MacGowan's first song to draw on his love of Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. When he brought that song into the studio in early 1986, Fearnley remembers: "He meant business, much more than before. It was awe-inspiring to see him in the rehearsal room with his suit on and an attitude."

But Fairytale of New York, from the same session, doesn't sound like an embryonic classic. The melody limps, the lyrics stumble and the action begins in Ireland: "It was a wild Christmas Eve on the West coast of Clare," sings Cait O'Riordan. "I looked 'cross the ocean, asked what's over there?" Clearly, it needed work. "I don't think the band was capable of playing the song as it needed to be played at that point," says Finer. "Shane and I batted arrangements around for ages and we'd periodically try and record it . Shane's a tireless and meticulous editor."

"Every night I used to have another bash at nailing the lyrics, but I knew they weren't right," says MacGowan. "It is by far the most complicated song that I have ever been involved in writing and performing. The beauty of it is that it sounds really simple."

Costello prosaically suggested calling it Christmas Day in the Drunk Tank. MacGowan pointed out that this did not sound like a hit. At the time Finer was reading JP Donleavy 's 1973 novel A Fairy Tale of New York , the picaresque story of a bereaved Irish-American's return home from Ireland to Manhattan. MacGowan later visited the novelist to ask his blessing to borrow the title. (Years later, Donleavy told the BBC that he loved the song but "realised straight away that it didn't really have anything to do with my book".)

A short time later, in February 1986, the Pogues finally made it to New York itself, to start their first ever US tour, and they weren't disappointed. "It was a hundred times more exciting in real life than we ever dreamed it could be!" says MacGowan. "It was even more like New York than the movies!" After their debut at a club called the World, their backstage visitors included Peter Dougherty, who came to direct the video for Fairytale of New York, and actor Matt Dillon , who appeared in it. MacGowan remembers Dillon, the rising star of Rumble Fish and The Outsiders , kissing his hand and saying: "I dig your shit, man, I love your shit!"

It was a year later that Murray approached U2 producer Steve Lillywhite to helm the next Pogues album. The sessions at London's RAK studios in the unusually hot summer of 1987 went so well that the band decided to have another crack at Fairytale. When they said they were struggling to blend MacGowan and Finer's sections, Lillywhite's solution was absurdly simple: record them separately and edit them together later. "It was a beautiful time," says Lillywhite. "I got the Pogues when they were really firing and before too much craziness got involved. As long as I got them early in the day it was great."

Fearnley was tasked with arranging the strings (a job completed by Fiachra Trench) and colouring in the scene- setting piano part, drawing on Tom Waits, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein's score for On the Waterfront . "I wanted to get American music into it," he explains. MacGowan originally wanted the orchestra to interpolate the refrain from Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas but "Phil Chevron [Pogues guitarist] told me that was a bad idea. He was right."

Only one hurdle remained. Cait O'Riordan had left the band in October 1986, leaving nobody to complete the duet. "I think at some point almost any female with a voice was a contender," Finer jokes, mentioning fellow RAK clients Chrissie Hynde (feasible) and Suzi Quatro (less so). "One person I certainly hadn't thought of was Kirsty [MacColl] and I don't think anyone else had."

"To be honest they weren't 100% convinced that Kirsty was the right person," says Lillywhite, who was married to MacColl. She was well-liked but her solo career was becalmed due to stage fright and contractual problems. Lillywhite suggested recording MacColl's part at his home studio over the weekend and seeing what the band thought. "I spent a whole day on Kirsty's vocals. I made sure every single word had exactly the right nuance. I remember taking it in on Monday morning and playing it to the band and they were just dumbfounded."

But MacGowan, who was so impressed that he re-did his own vocals, insists: "I was madly in love with Kirsty from the first time I saw her on Top Of The Pops. She was a genius in her own right and she was a better producer than he was! She could make a song her own and she made Fairytale her own." (Since MacColl's tragic death in 2000, her part has been taken by singers including Sinéad O'Connor , Cerys Matthews, Katie Melua, Victoria Clarke and Jem Finer's daughter Ella.)

In the finished version the story finally acquires the ring of truth, but it's still teasingly elliptical. Does the argument take place after the man leaves the drunk tank or does the whole song unfold in his sozzled head? After all, Once Upon a Time in America is told almost entirely in flashback. And while the "cars big as bars" and the singing of Galway Bay ( a 1948 hit for Bing Crosby , beloved of Irish immigrants) place the action in the 1940s, MacGowan suggests that the characters are much older, remembering their glory days.

And can we trust the narrator anyway? "The guy is a bum who is living on the street," says MacGowan. "And he's just won on a horse at the unlikely odds of 18-to-one, so you're not even sure he is telling the truth." He says that both characters are versions of himself. "I identified with the man because I was a hustler and I identified with the woman because I was a heavy drinker and a singer. I have been in hospitals on morphine drips, and I have been in drunk tanks on Christmas Eve."

The song's brilliance is sealed by its final verse when MacGowan protests, "I could have been someone", and MacColl shoots back: "Well, so could anyone." Then MacColl accuses, "You took my dreams from me," and MacGowan responds, with all the warmth he's been withholding: "I kept them with me babe/I put them with my own." So in its final iteration the chorus is no longer a tauntingly ironic reminder of better times but the tentative promise of reconciliation. "You really don't know what is going to happen to them," says MacGowan. "The ending is completely open."

The Pogues shot the video in New York during Thanksgiving week. The air was bitterly cold and fairy lights twinkled in the trees. Matt Dillon played the NYPD officer who arrests MacGowan but he was too nervous to manhandle him until the shivering singer snapped: "Just kick the shit out of me and throw me in the cell and then we can be warm!" Contrary to the lyrics, the NYPD didn't have a choir, so Dougherty hired the force's pipe band instead. When it turned out that they didn't know Galway Bay, they mouthed the only lyrics they all knew: the Mickey Mouse Club chant .

In the black-and-white performance footage, closely modelled on a BBC2 documentary about Billie Holiday, it was decided that MacGowan should sit at the piano while Fearnley wore the singer's rings to imitate him for the closeups. "I'm the fucking piano player and I wanted people to know that," says Fearnley. "It was absolutely humiliating. But it looks better. You have to find your proper place for the benefit of the project."

Fairytale of New York had a galvanising effect on everyone involved. When MacColl joined the Pogues on tour, she gained the confidence to relaunch her solo career, and the Pogues only narrowly lost the Christmas No 1 to the Pet Shop Boys' Always on My Mind . "Going to No 1 in Ireland was what mattered to me," MacGowan says now. "I wouldn't have expected the English to have great taste!" For Lillywhite: "I love the fact that it's never been No 1. It's for the underdog."

This Christmas, as the song enters the charts for the 10th time, the Pogues will play a show to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Although they fired MacGowan in 1991 ("What took you so long?" he replied), they reunited a decade later. So Fairytale of New York has ended up being a parable of the band's life together: the youthful optimism, the bitter recriminations, the uncertain detente.

"We told a similar story ourselves," agrees Fearnley. "We've all had hopes and we've had our conflicts, but there's some other damn thing that's binding us all together and hopefully always will."

The ending is completely open.

Fairytale of New York is out now on seven-inch vinyl on Rhino and digitally on iTunes. The Pogues play the O2 in London on 20 December. With thanks to Victoria Mary Clarke.

LONDON Electric Ballroom, Camden

December 10 1987. A pre-tour outing for the Pogues at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. We might reasonably expect Kirsty to be there, though this is unconfirmed.

Fairytale Of New York - The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Top Of The Pops

December 17, 1987. A TV performance of ‘Fairytale of New York’, with the Pogues. Gary Davies again, this time with Mike Read. Since the show was recorded a couple of days earlier it allowed her to ‘simultaneously’ be in Scotland for Pogues duty!

GLASGOW Barrowlands

The Pogues played a three night residency at Glasgow Barrowlands then toured throughout the first half of 1988 and KM would have appeared at many shows, though we don’t know which. Thanks to Patrice Brouhat’s excellent research.

Pogues ticket from December 1987

December 17-19 1987. Kirsty sang on ‘Fairytale of New York’ and ‘A pair of brown eyes’. Tracks from the 17th (‘Brown eyes’ and ‘Sally Maclennane’) appear on the CD single for ‘If I should fall from grace with God’.

The Scottish Daily Record reported that “she was only too happy to give the Pogues’ pin-up singer a quick kiss under the mistletoe” after the band’s recent festive concerts at Glasgow Barrowland. “Really, I can’t stand him”, joked Kirsty, “e’s horrible, ain’t he?”. And Shane laughingly added “I’m mad about Kirsty. But then again, I’m not married to her.” “The audience at the Barrowland is the best in the world” Kirsty said.

Pogues on Tour

The Pogues then played an extensive tour so we may assume that Kirsty will have played on these dates: February 21 Norwich UEA, 22 Reading University, 23 Leicester DeMontford Hall, 24 Birmingham Odeon, 26 Newcastle City Hall, 27 Aberdeen Capitol, 28/29 Edinburgh Playhouse, March 1 Leeds University (a confirmed sighting), 2 Hanley Victoria Hall, 3 Manchester Apollo,4 Liverpool Royal Court, 6 Bristol Studio, 7 Swansea Mayfair, 8 Nottingham Rock City (confirmed), 9 Sheffield City Hall (confirmed), 10 Electric Ballroom Camden, 11 Cambridge Corn Exchange, 12 Brighton Centre, 13 Southampton Mayflower.

GLASGOW SECC

December 9, 1988 guesting with The Pogues. ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’, ‘Turkish Song of The Damned’, ‘Fiesta’, ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, ‘The Irish Rover’.

There were gigs on December 12 at Birmingham NEC, 17 London Wembley Arena and 18 Brighton Centre.

December 19, 1988 guesting with The Pogues. ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’, ‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’, ‘Honky Tonk Women’, ‘Waltzing Matilda’.

My husband to be and I saw the Pogues and Kirsty Mac Coll perform “ Fairytale of New York” at Glasgow Barrowland 1987 Dec 18 th

Absolutely Magical what a night Sad at his passing as brought up on the Dubliners as both parents Irish and The Pogues were our punk version of the Dubliners ❤️

Posting this on the day of Shane MacGowan death, 30th November 2023. I fondly recall the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl performing together at Leeds University, Match 1st 1988, I think. They were so good performing together and quite sad that now neither of them are still with us. End of something magical, but their Christmas song ‘Fairytale of New York’ will keep the memories of both Kirsty and Shane alive.

I saw the Pogues on February 21st Norwich UEA. Kirsty did not perfrom with them that night.

I was at the Brighton Centre gig for this tour and can confirm that Kirsty appeared there.

We were lucky to see the Pogues and Kirsty perform FT of NY for the very first time live at Glasgow Barrowlands Dec 17tb 1987. The best Christmas song ever.

Kirsty was on stage at the Rock City gig 8th March 1988. I have photos of her singing and waltzing with Shane – happy to share them

Kirsty certainly played the March 9 1988 show at Sheffield City Hall. I was there.

I saw her perform with the Pogues at Victoria Hall Hanley 1988, so that would have been March 2nd according to your listing above.

The Pogues and Kirsty played Scunthorpe Baths on December 7th , not 4th .. Leeds on 1st and Paris Cergy-Pontoise on 2nd

Legendary Irish rock act the Pogues will visit North America for the first time in years this spring. The nine-show tour will begin with a March 9-10 stand at Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club and will feature the classic Pogues lineup of Shane McGowan , Philip Chevron, Jem Finer, Darryl Hunt, Spider Stacy, Andrew Ranken, Terry Woods and James Fearnley. Nearly half of the outing will be taken up with four shows at New York’s new Nokia Theatre, the first three of which are already sold out. An Internet pre-sale for the last show, on March 19, begins today (Dec. 21) at noon ET. Having returned to sporadic live duty in recent years, the Pogues on Monday re-released their Christmas single “Fairytale of New York” in the United Kingdom. Proceeds from the track, which features the late Kirsty MacColl, will benefit the homeless charity Crisis at Christmas as well as the Justice for Kirsty campaign. The latter group is working to find the parties responsible for MacColl’s 2000 death in a powerboat accident. According to a spokesperson, the Pogues are planning a March North American release for a live CD/DVD, with details to be announced. Here are the Pogues’ North American tour dates: March 9-10: Washington, D.C. (9:30 Club) March 11: Atlantic City, N.J. (Borgata) March 14-15: Boston (Orpheum Theatre) March 16-19: New York (Nokia Theatre)

Andrew Ranken and The Mysterious Wheels

Andrew has been bellowing at the front of The Mysterious Wheels for thirty years. In 2014 they decided to make it official, too, and have entered the studio to record their first full length release. They also get together every month to shake the rafters at Bar Etcetera in Stoke Newington, bringing their very excellent Blues, Country and soulful Rock n' Roll to the people. You should go see them.

Go to the Mysterious Wheels' web site , listen to tracks, sign up for their mailing list (they promise to use the information only for good or comedy), and learn more about when to book your next trip to Stoke Newington.

For fans of Celtic Punk music, one of the standards that all other bands will be measured up to is The Pogues. With a long standing history in the field, fans look forward to hearing the distinct tin whistle and banjo combinations that have been part of their tradition since 1982. All it will take is one look at their first album in 1984 “Red Roses for Me” to hear the impact they made on the Celtic music culture. The Pouges are the standard of Celtic Punk band music.

One of the unique things that makes The Pogues a fan favorite is the laid back vibe that comes with attending one of their concerts. Part of this comes from their name, the original name of the band was Pogue Mahoneof the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse“

Though due to the death of guitarist Phillip Chevron, the band has not been touring or releasing new music. The last album they released was in October of 2013 which was a box collection of all of their studio albums and a previously unreleased live album from 1991 featuring former guitarist Joe Strummer.
