Live Review: The Reunion Tour featuring Kirk Franklin @ Capital One Arena — 10/22/23

Live Review: The Reunion Tour featuring Kirk Franklin @ Capital One Arena — 10/22/23

The Reunion Tour was a much-needed night of praise with everything going on in the world. Featuring a lineup of all-star gospel artists — including Kirk Franklin, The Clark Sisters, Israel Houghton, Tamela and David Mann, and Tye Tribbett — this concert was a highly anticipated event at Capital One Arena recently.

Having seen each artist perform individually at different churches in the DMV, it was exciting to see them all together on a big stage with the largest crowd of the tour gathered at the Capital One Area in DC on Oct. 22. It truly felt like a reunion, as I saw a few of my peers and family members come together for a night of celebration.

Before the show began, the MC of the night engaged the crowd by asking for their ages to determine which age group could be the loudest. The presence of an infant and a woman in her 90s was in the audience this night, topping the oldest age all tour.

The concert kicked off with Kirk Franklin taking the center stage, prompting the crowd to rise to their feet as the background singers started singing “Joy.” The legendary Clark Sisters then appeared on the main stage, delivering a powerful performance of “Miracle.” It was a joyous moment to witness such an elite group producing timeless music.

Stream “Miracle” by The Clark Sisters on YouTube:

As the night continued, Israel Houghton took the stage with his black and white guitar, performing “Again I Say Rejoice” and captivating the audience. Tye Tribbett surprised everyone by appearing in the crowd in the 108 section, greeting excited fans before making his way to the main stage to perform “If He Did It Before… Same God.” The energy was infectious, and that was only apart of the first act.

David and Tamela Mann, walked down the runway hand in hand. Displaying that unique bond for one another. I was lucky enough to be near the center where all the performers came to deliver a collection of songs. While Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribbett, and David Mann were known for their high-energy performances, the Clark Sisters surprised everyone matching the same level of energy. As they were wearing sneakers and was able to add some extra levels of praise. Which was humorous to David Mann as he made a joke about it later on in the show.

Tye Tribbett couldn’t wait to perform “Victory” in DC, adding he couldn’t wait to perform it as it was made for us due to the Go-Go beat. Tye didn’t have to sing a word we were in the pocket, hitting those imaginary Congos, the audience was grooving.

Watch Tye Tribbett perform “Victory” live for TBN on YouTube:

I have to give flowers to the ladies of the tour The Clark Sisters and Tamela Mann. Each note hit you spiritually a pure vibration over took the arena when they sang. Happy have witness them sing together.

Special guests Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Jonathan McReynolds joined the stage to help close the show, adding even more talent and power to the already incredible lineup.

My favorite moment of the night was when David and Kirk Franklin took it back and sang a fan favorite, “He’s Able,” but with a Go-Go beat catering to the DC audience. It was a unique and enjoyable twist. Another moment David’s silly self did a headstand during one of the dance breaks, adding a fun element to the performance.

If there was one wishful thinking, it would have been for the Clark Sisters to perform “Center Of Thy Will,” a song that resonates with all the church girls in the audience. *Wink Wink*

Overall, the concert was close to three hours, but I still wanted more. The crowd was fully engaged, stretching their arms high and wide, embracing the presence of God throughout the night. It was a powerful and uplifting experience that left me wanting to see and hear more from these incredible gospel artists.

Heart Extends Massive 2024 Reunion Tour with Shows in Nashville, L.A., N.Y.C. and More — See the Dates!

T he rock legends will be setting out on tour along with Cheap Trick, BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening

After a five year hiatus, allow Heart to go "Crazy On You" with their thrilling live show and long-awaited return to the stage!

The rockers previously announced they were setting out on a massive tour in 2024 — marking their reunion and first run of live shows since 2019 — and, on Tuesday, Heart revealed they're expanding the dates. The group helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will now continue their run, titled the Royal Flush Tour, across North America through the end of the year, along with an A-list slate of special guests.

While the "Barracuda" group's shows this year were originally set to kick off in late April and wrap up by September, they'll now be out on the road through the fall until mid-December.

Heart's 2024 tour kicks off on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, continues in the U.S. through May, before heading to Europe for a handful of dates in June and July. On July 30, they'll resume their North American leg in Columbus, Ohio, and then play through the rest of the summer and into the fall.

The newly announced dates begin on Sept. 26 in San Francisco and last until Dec. 15 in Las Vegas. Fans will be able to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at stadiums in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego and many others.

Throughout the Royal Flush Tour, the "Magic Man" band will be joined by fellow rock legends Cheap Trick, and select shows will also include support from BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening, the project from the son of the English rock group's original drummer.

The Wilson sisters shared a statement in press release about the upcoming concerts.

"We’re so excited to announce more tour dates," Ann, 73, said. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tony and Sean — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance."

Nancy, 70, added, "I am incredibly proud of the show that we have crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with even more fans. We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the big electric energy of a completely live on the spot rock show."

The Royal Flush Tour comes after the rock favorites celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

It also marks their first time out on the road together since 2019, when the "Alone" group set out on their Love Alive Tour. At the time, the shows saw the Wilsons coming back together after the two experience a brief rift. (In 2016, Ann's husband,  Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy's then-16-year-old sons  after they reportedly left a tour bus door open, which he pleaded guilty to two non-felony assault charges.)

Both Ann and Nancy also recently took time to record their own solo efforts: Ann with Fierce Bliss in 2022 and Nancy with You and Me in 2021.

The two hitmakers have both explained to PEOPLE in interviews that taking time apart only makes their work together in Heart stronger.

"[Taking time apart] allows us to bring stuff back to Heart that we didn't have before," Ann said in a 2022 interview . "We love each other. She and I really look forward to smooth sailing."

Meanwhile, Nancy shared in a 2021 conversation that it was "so amazing" to get back out on the road together on their 2019 tour. "I could see that the Heart fans really loved the big spectacle aspects of the show — even if Ann didn't love the bubble machine I had requested," she said. "But most of all we saw how much the Heart fans loved the Heart sisters reunited."

While the previously announced concerts are already on sale , tickets for the fall dates go on sale later this week. Ticket sales kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, which lasts from now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The general on-sale will then follow on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

Masters a reunion of the world’s best players. But the numbers are shrinking

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — More than golf’s first major championship of the year, the Masters represents unification. This is the first time since July at the British Open the best players regardless of their tours compete against each other — same course, same tournament, same television network.

“I believe everyone agrees there’s excitement in the air this week,” Masters Chairman Fred Ridley said Wednesday. “The best players in the world are together once again.”

Still unclear at Augusta National is for how much longer.

Saudi-funded LIV Golf has 13 players at the Masters, seven of them former champions who can play as long as they want. That’s down from 18 a year ago. Only nine LIV players are assured of being back to Augusta National next year, depending on how they fare in the majors this year.

Ridley offered little hope the pathway for LIV to Augusta National was about to get wider.

He said the Official World Golf Ranking was a “legitimate determiner” of the best in golf, bad news for a rival league that does not get world ranking points. And while the Masters annually reviews its criteria for invitations, Ridley announced no new changes.

Instead, he leaned on the Masters being an invitational, and the club alone decides who it deems worthy of getting that elegant, cream-colored invitation in the mail.

“If we felt that there were a player or players, whether they played on the LIV Tour or any other tour, who were deserving of an invitation to the Masters, we would exercise that discretion with regard to special invitations,” Ridley said.

The battle is for a green jacket, but that might not be the only competition.

It will be difficult to look at a leaderboard without considering who is with LIV Golf. That much hasn’t changed from last year — the first Masters since LIV was launched — and LIV certainly showed the 54-hole, no-cut league didn’t affect them. Three players were among the top four on the final leaderboard.

And just like last year, there is no animosity inside the ropes.

Phil Mickelson and Joaquin Niemann from LIV Golf played a practice round with Akshay Bhatia, the final player into the field because of his Texas Open victory last week. Xander Schauffele told of running into Dustin Johnson and the two decided to play a practice round, no different from what would have happened long before LIV began luring away players with guaranteed riches.

But the future remains murky.

Augusta National and the other three organizations that run majors have seats on the OWGR board that reviewed LIV’s application to join and get world ranking points. The vote was unanimous not to award points until certain enhancements were met.

LIV eventually decided to withdraw its application , and several players decried the world ranking as no longer relevant.

It is to Ridley and the Masters. The top 50 at the end of the year and a week before the Masters still get invitations. Bryson DeChambeau said the majors, including the Masters, should invite the top 12 from the LIV points list.

Ridley wasn’t buying that.

“I think it will be difficult to establish any type of point system that had any connection to the rest of the world of golf because they’re basically — not totally, but for the most part — a closed shop,” Ridley said. “There is some relegation, but not very much.

“But I don’t think that prevents us from giving subjective consideration based on talent, based on performance to those players.”

That’s what led Augusta National to offer an invitation to Niemann. The club did not cite anything he did on LIV — the Chilean has two LIV wins this year — but his willingness to travel outside LIV and win the Australian Open, along with a top finish in the Australian PGA.

Talor Gooch did not get an invitation. He won three LIV events last year and later suggested Rory McIlroy would have an asterisk next to his name if he won the Masters because all the best aren’t there.

Gooch is unlikely to be missed, not with Scottie Scheffler going for a second green jacket, with McIlroy chasing the career Grand Slam, Tiger Woods playing for only the second time this year and a host of others from all tours chasing one of golf’s most prized possessions.

And then the PGA Tour will head to Hilton Head and LIV Golf will make its way to Australia, and they all have to wait until the next major May 16-19 at the PGA Championship.

“There’s a lot of people a lot smarter than me that could figure this out in a much more efficient way,” Jon Rahm said. “But the obvious answer is that there’s got to be a way for certain players in whatever tour to be able to earn their way in. That’s the only thing can I say. I don’t know what that looks like. But there’s got to be a fair way for everybody to compete.”

Mayor bowser cuts ribbon at new dc health headquarters in ward 8.

(Washington, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser cut the ribbon at DC Health’s new headquarters in the Anacostia neighborhood of Ward 8. The new DC Health headquarters means that approximately 700 DC Health employees join a growing network of health care partners and providers in Ward 8. The move is also part of the Mayor’s efforts to locate more DC Government agencies in neighborhoods East of the River to serve as catalysts for economic growth.       “DC Health’s new headquarters are part of a growing health care corridor in Ward 8 that also includes the new urgent care, the new Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center – and next year, we will open the state-of-the-art Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health on the St. Elizabeths East campus,” said Mayor Bowser. “Together, we’re making sure more people get the right care at the right time so that we can improve health outcomes for Washingtonians.”     In addition to the economic benefits, DC Health’s move reflects Mayor Bowser’s commitment to improving health outcomes for communities in Wards 7 and 8. DC Health joins the Cedar Hill Urgent Care GW Health facility in Anacostia, which opened in October 2022 and is now serving over 12,000 patients a year. In 2023, the District also celebrated the opening of the new Whitman-Walker Max Robinson Center at the St. Elizabeths East campus. Last month, the Mayor announced a plan to bring new emergency services to Ward 7 on the Fletcher-Johnson campus. And in 2025, the District will open the full-service Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health on the St. Elizabeths East campus.     “We’ve been overwhelmed by how the local residents and businesses have welcomed the nearly 700 members of the DC Health family into the Anacostia neighborhood. As we plant our roots within this community, we are eager to engage our neighbors in a meaningful conversation about how we can address the public health and equity issues and together, build healthier communities,” said DC Health Director Dr. Ayanna Bennett. “And while we celebrate this new headquarters, we also recognize the very important work that is happening every day in the clinics, food pantries, volunteer centers, and 90 current partner organizations where we provide funding and expertise.”      DC Health’s new headquarters are located in Reunion Square, a redevelopment project supported with the first-ever Tax Increment Financing in Ward 8. At full build-out, the multi-phase, 1.5 million-square-foot development will have 950,000 square feet of office space; 130,000 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail; and a 480-unit multi-family residential development, including affordable and senior living units. The facility includes contemporary office spaces, well-lit hallways, and a state-of-the-art Command Center equipped with a dedicated emergency generator. Additionally, it features a fitness center, radiant pantries, conference rooms, versatile multipurpose rooms, a media room, various collaborative spaces, two outdoor terraces and a shared courtyard.        “This nearly $50 million project offers a warm welcome center to receive residents for DC Health,” said Department of General Services (DGS) Director Delano Hunter. “We are also proud that 106 District residents were involved in the construction of the project, with 59 coming from Wards 7 and 8. As we continue to build, maintain, and sustain the District’s facilities, we are proud to work with the DC Health in supporting the health and wellbeing of District residents.”      In 2019, Mayor Bowser signed a Mayor’s Order directing the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and DGS to first identify potential relocation properties in Wards 7 and 8 when considering office space for District government agencies. The order focused on the District government as a powerful tool for investing in the economic vitality of communities. In 2023, the Bowser Administration celebrated DGS’s new headquarters in Ward 7 as the first government office building to open utilizing the Mayor’s East of the River leasing strategy.      At today’s event, Mayor Bowser was also joined by representatives from Martha’s Table to announce that the second round of direct cash assistance payments through the Strong Families, Strong Future DC pilot program will begin going out today to 118 participating mothers residing in Wards 5, 7, and 8. The pilot was designed to improve maternal and child health outcomes, utilizing direct cash assistance to create a stronger financial foundation for mother and child and empowering mothers with financial autonomy. Mayor Bowser’s FY24 budget invested $1 million in the program, and her FY25 budget proposal includes another $1 million to provide a third and final year of assistance to the mothers, making the pilot a three-year program from start to finish. The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development partnered with Martha’s Table to implement the program, which this year will provide $626 per month for one year. The participants were new and expectant mothers when the program launched, with the goal of having them enrolled through the first three years of their children’s lives.

The gravitational forces, process of elimination that drew Cody Bellinger back to the Cubs

Mar 28, 2024; Arlington, Texas, USA; Chicago Cubs center fielder Cody Bellinger (24) celebrates at second base after he hits a double and drives in a run against the Texas Rangers during the sixth inning at Globe Life Field. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

CHICAGO — During a blowout game on a frigid April night at Wrigley Field, the crowd chanted “CO-DY! CO-DY!” Cody Bellinger responded to the fans still hanging in there by blasting a home run off the right field video board. His return to the Chicago Cubs wasn’t scripted the way he would have pictured it. But as he kept waiting out in the cold as a free agent, the odds dramatically shifted toward a reunion.

“Rain, snow, cold, hot, they’re going to be out supporting,” Bellinger said. “That’s what makes it really special.”

The sentimental pitch, however, wasn’t really going to work on Bellinger and Scott Boras, the agent with a long history of landing nine-figure deals for his clients. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer instead waited patiently and positioned his team to be the fallback. That process of elimination, Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said, factored in how baseball’s TV model is unraveling.

“Each fall, as we go into the offseason, Jed and I sit down and we try to determine which teams will be bidders for players that we’re interested in,” Kenney told 670 The Score, the team’s flagship radio station . “For instance, with Bellinger, a first baseman/center fielder, I give (Jed) my assessment based on what I know about the (other) teams’ financial health. Like, which teams could afford a contract like the one Bellinger’s going to get?

“Say there’s 10 teams I don’t think can afford him. And what Jed brings is: ‘Here are the teams that have a need either at center or first.’ So you try and create this sort of grid around: Of the 30 clubs, how many are likely to be bidding on Bellinger?”

This @Cody_Bellinger home run is brought to you by CUBS FANS. #YouHaveToSeeIt pic.twitter.com/zzlEqejRXa — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 3, 2024

The three teams the Cubs are facing on their current road trip help illustrate how Hoyer sensed an opportunity, and why Bellinger and Boras encountered headwinds.

• The San Diego Padres slashed payroll following an unprecedented spending spree and the death of chairman Peter Seidler, whose competitive spirit pushed the franchise into another financial stratosphere. Seidler was an owner who engaged with Boras and capitalized when the NFL ’s Chargers moved to Los Angeles. After years of collecting stars — and neglecting other areas of the roster — the Padres traded Juan Soto and retrenched.

• The Seattle Mariners shuffled the deck while trying to salvage their local TV situation. The Mariners acquired full ownership of their regional sports network, ROOT Sports Northwest, while Xfinity bumped the cable channel to a premium tier, creating even more instability. Jerry Dipoto, Seattle’s president of baseball operations, also gave that cringey explanation about how Mariners fans should be happy if their team wins 54 percent of the time, illustrating the dispassion that has overtaken most front offices.

• The Arizona Diamondbacks focused on pitching after their surprising run to the World Series. At a time when teams are struggling to find capable two-way center fielders, the Diamondbacks have both Corbin Carroll and Alek Thomas under long-term club control. First base is covered with Christian Walker . The extra revenues from last year’s postseason success led the Diamondbacks to circle back and focus on another Boras client, pitcher Jordan Montgomery , making them an exception among the franchises proceeding with caution.

“I said to Jed, ‘There’s 10 teams that really can’t spend this year just because of what’s happening in the TV market,’” Kenney recalled on the “Mully & Haugh” show. “Their RSNs are either bankrupt or their rights have been returned. When they took those rights to the market, they got a fraction of what they were getting in prior years.

“We know all this. Because of revenue sharing, I see the financials for all 29 other clubs. If you one day want to know how much the Reds make in concessions or the Yankees in parking or the Dodgers in ticket sales, I see all those numbers. There’s a media line in that FIQ (Financial Information Questionnaire). You can see the media revenues declining for all clubs, including ours, because of the cord-cutting situation.”

Fans, players and the media can’t see all of the financial details within those private companies. The Atlanta Braves , a publicly traded franchise, exceeded $600 million in annual revenue for the first time last year . The business is good enough that recent estimates by Forbes and Sportico placed the franchise value of the Cubs between $4.2 billion and $5.3 billion.

If you chant it, he will homer 🫡 pic.twitter.com/S33qkzad8N — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 7, 2024

The uncertainty surrounding Marquee Sports Network contributed to the team’s projections. The Cubs are carrying a payroll that will likely finish this year over the luxury-tax threshold ($237 million). Resources are expected to be available for improvements at the trade deadline. But signing Bellinger in late February essentially took the Cubs out of the running for Montgomery, who eventually settled for a one-year, $25 million contract.

“You always want to add more,” Hoyer said after Opening Day starter Justin Steele joined pitcher Jameson Taillon on the injured list . “At some point, you realize that whether it’s roster construction limits or whether it’s your budgets, there’s a limit to what you can do. So I don’t think there’s any point in looking back on that, wondering ‘What if?’”

Without Montgomery or Blake Snell , the Cubs are getting a valuable look at Ben Brown , who pitched well in his last two outings after a rocky major-league debut. By bringing back Bellinger, the Cubs can be patient with center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong , a top prospect at Triple-A Iowa. With Bellinger, the Cubs have another option at first base in case it doesn’t work out with Michael Busch .

As much as Bellinger enjoyed his time in Chicago — and excelled as the National League’s Comeback Player of the Year — he made a business decision to sign a three-year, $80 million contract that includes opt-out clauses after each of the first two seasons.

Bellinger gets a great platform in Chicago, and more distance from his injury-plagued ending with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team that non-tendered him after the 2022 season. By next winter, the landscape could look much different as teams reassess their farm systems and financial pictures. Owners can change their minds, and prospects will come and go. Until then, Cubs fans will keep chanting “CO-DY! CO-DY!” That happened again before Bellinger hit his second home run this season.

“I don’t personally set any number goals,” Bellinger said. “I just hold myself to a standard of showing up every day, becoming the best version of myself that day, preparing the best I can. And when the day is over, did I do everything I can to be the best I can be?”
