The Bomas Choir that sang amidst chaos: God used us to bring emotions down

A few members of Safari Voices International choir led by Kenneth Indiazi (C).

During the event, the choir took center stage dressed in black and accessorized with the Kenyan flag.

They were forced to shift gears in the middle of their performance when chaos broke out, with members from both sides of the political divide wreaking havoc as the nation waited for IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati to announce the presidential results.

Safari Voices continued to sing alongside other bands present, attempting to calm the public by singing patriotic songs and hymns until calm was restored.

The band, led by director Kenneth Indiazi (also the lead singer), tells Citizen Digital what propelled them through the topsy-turvy moment, and how they ended up performing in the first place.

Indiazi begins by emphasizing that they are a choral group that also functions as a band. He goes on to say that he is the leader of a 22-member group that was formed in 2008.

"We come from different backgrounds, we have teachers, civil servants, company directors ranging from young to old members," he says amid a subtle smile.

Indiazi then delves into the details of the day they played a critical role as the country awaited the announcement of President Kenyatta's successor.

He claims they were hired by the IEBC to perform at the auditorium and that they were scheduled to perform from 10 a.m. until Mr. Chebukati stood at the lectern to make the announcement--which was supposed to happen at 3 p.m., but the unprecedented chaos caused the announcement to take place at 6 p.m.

Indiazi claims that despite the commotion, they were compelled to sing, and that the music served as'medicine' to alleviate tensions.

"On that day we were supposed to work from 10 until the time the chairman of IEBC comes to announce the results. But because we were there serving our nation we could not stop singing. Singing there was like medicine for the tempers that were going around there," he said. 

"We had to continue singing because we saw whatever was taking place there, the tempers had gone up, and its only music that can bring those tempers down and so we had to sing and we thank God because he used us to bring the emotions down."

He went on to say that their main goal was to keep spreading the message of peace through patriotic songs.

"And through our song which was speaking about peace, we kept on reminding those fighting that we need peace and not the throwing of chairs that was there. Elections come and go but Kenya will remain," he added.

Indiazi claimed that if it hadn't been for them, things would have gone much worse, in response to those who chastised them for their actions, claiming that they made the wait more agonizing.

"I assure you Kenyans appreciated what we did. If we were not there things would have been different," he said confidently. 

As a result of their admirable poise, Indiazi claims they have received numerous phone calls, some congratulating them on their outstanding work and others booking them to perform at at events.

"We are actually overwhelmed with phone calls, first of all thanking us for what we did  and secondly we have already been booked for functions. It gave us a marketing platform," he said.  

"Guys have also been calling us from Canada, America just thanking us and we perform in Weddings, funerals, gigs and anybody can invite us."

Safari Voices Internation Choir, the music team that lit up the mood at the Bomas of Kenya despite the scuffle that arose has disclosed they were used by God.

Angelic voices

The choir belted out songs in angelic voices, drowning the chaotic shouting that rented the air before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chair Wafula Chebukati made the presidential declaration.

Kenneth Indizai led the choir undeterred in churning out lovely music as live TV cameras were glued to the drama that was unfolding.

Indiazi said their music helped calm tension that was building up ahead of Chebukati announcing the final tally and winner of the presidential race between Raila Odinga and William Ruto.

"Singing there was like medicine for the tempers that were going around there," Indiazi told Citizen Digital .

Indiazi added:

"It's only music that can bring those tempers down and so we had to sing and we thank God because he used us."

Kenyans bemused

TUKO.co.ke reported that Kenyans were bemused by the choir that was entertaining members of the public after it continued to play on despite the scuffle at Bomas of Kenya.

While images of leaders and security officers pushing and pulling splashed across the screens, the voices of the singers continued graciously in the background.

It was a reminder of the Titanic where the band continued entertaining the passengers even as the ship sunk.

Dmitry Korchak (born February 19, 1979 in Elektrostal/Moscow Oblast) is a Russian tenor and conductor.

Korchak received his musical education at the Moscow Choral Academy. In 2004 he won prizes at the “Francisco Viñas” International Singing Competition in Barcelona and at the Plácido Domingo Operalia International Competition in Los Angeles.

As a singer he has appeared at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, the Paris Opera Bastille, London’s Covent Garden and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has collaborated with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Plácido Domingo, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Kent Nagano.

From 2017 to 2020, Dmitry Korchak was Principal Guest Conductor at the Novosibirsk Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, where he directed his own festival, and Guest Conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.

Korchak has made several guest appearances at the Kissinger Sommer, the Salzburg Festival and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, where he also worked as a conductor. Korchak also worked with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others.

International choir festival comes to Cornwall

Choirs from all around world have arrived in Cornwall for the 11th International Male Choral Festival.

Singers of all ages will spend the next few days performing at 25 venues across the county.

About 50 choirs will be taking part, with the event expected to attract more than 50,000 people, organisers said.

Jakob Martinec, spokesperson for the Prague Boys' Choir, said the festival was "such an important event".

"It's wonderful, there are so many exciting things happening here in Cornwall and this is such an important event for choir singing, that is in crisis worldwide," he said.

"So, to have this extraordinary festival with so many choirs, it's joy."

Festival director Gareth Churcher said there was still a "huge appetite" for the festival.

"Through all the real challenges around the world, and the cost of living crisis, there is still clearly a huge appetite for the joy and camaraderie that our festival brings," he said.

"It would be fair to say we are putting on an amazing event in the face of adversity and we cannot wait to welcome our friends - international and closer to home - for a festival that makes so many people happy."

Patrick, from the Prague Boys' Choir, added: "I think everyone here could be a potential singer, everyone has a beautiful voice, if they like singing they should go after it and follow singing."

Dr. Joseph Lozovyy was born into a Christian family in Elektrostal, Moscow Region, and was raised in a pastor’s home. From the age of fifteen, he began actively participating in the music ministry of the Baptist Church in Mytishchi, where his father served as a pastor, and also played in the orchestra of the Central Moscow Baptist Church. From 1989, he participated in various evangelistic events in different cities of Moscow Region and beyond. From 1989 to 1992, as a member of the choir and orchestra “LOGOS,” he participated in evangelistic and charitable concerts, repeatedly performing on the stages of the Moscow State Conservatory, the Bolshoi Theatre, and other concert halls in Russia and abroad. In 1992, his family moved to the United States. In 2007, after completing a full course of spiritual and academic preparation, Joseph moved to Dallas, Texas, to engage in church ministry. In 2008, he founded the Russian Bible Church to preach to the Russian-speaking population living in Dallas, Texas.
