The Tourist Ending, Explained: Is Elliot Dead or Alive?

Sumith Prasad of The Tourist Ending, Explained: Is Elliot Dead or Alive?

The thriller series ‘The Tourist’ centers around a car rollover victim named Elliot Stanley, who completely loses his memory due to the incident. With the help of a few acquaintances in the town of Burnt Ridge, Elliot tries to find out more about his identity and involvement in a series of perplexing predicaments.

Written by Harry and Jack Williams, the series progresses through Elliot’s attempts to unravel the mystery behind his enemies, who unceasingly chase him. The first season of the engrossing series ends with a cliffhanger, leaving the viewers nothing but stunned. If you are trying to make sense of its ending, we have got you covered! SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Tourist Recap

A man gets chased by a giant truck as he drives through the Australian outback in his car. After considerable effort, he loses the truck but eventually gets hit by the same. He wakes up in a hospital in the town of Cooper Springs, without any memory of his past or identity. Probationary constable Helen Chambers visits the man and tries to retrieve information about him but fails to do so. From his clothes, the man gets a scrap paper with the address of a diner along with the date of a meeting.

The man discharges himself from the hospital and goes to the diner in Burnt Ridge, a nearby town, and sits at the table mentioned in the paper. When he steps out to go to the restroom, a bomb explodes at the diner. He realizes that he is being hunted by an unknown enemy. With the help of Sue, the owner of his shelter in the town, the man tries to find out what he was doing in the region prior to his memory loss. At that point, he receives a call from a man buried in an oil drum, seeking his help.

Along with Luci, a waiter at the diner, the man locates the buried man but finds out that he is dead. While returning, he notices that Luci’s handwriting and the handwriting on the scrap paper are the same. When he confronts her, Luci reveals that he is Elliot Stanley, her ex-boyfriend. As they return to Burnt Ridge, a fellow named Billy arrives at Sue’s home and tries to kill Elliot, Luci, and Helen. Elliot saves Helen from Billy and they both escape. Billy goes to Luci’s place and gets killed after a fight. Meanwhile, Detective Rogers arrives at Burnt Ridge to investigate the explosion. He alerts police stations nearby to find Elliot.

When Helen realizes that the police are looking for Elliot, she pleads with him to surrender. However, he holds her at gunpoint to flee from the region and find Luci, who tries to leave the town. During their expedition, Helen and Elliot start to nurture a bond. By that time, Kosta Panigiris, an infamous drug lord, arrives at Burnt Ridge for Elliot. He kidnaps Rogers’ wife and asks the detective to find and take Elliot to him. The detective agrees and locates Elliot at a nearby motel. When a local police officer named Lammon comes in the way of Rogers’ plan, he kills him and takes Elliot to Kosta.

Kosta threatens to kill Elliot unless he finds a bag that contains $1 million Elliot stole from the notorious criminal. As they try to locate the bag, Elliot starts to remember his past and realize that he was Kosta’s accountant. Meanwhile, Luci arrives to save Elliot. A shootout ensues when Elliot and Luci try to escape, which results in Kosta’s instant and Luci’s eventual deaths . Upon escaping, Elliot meets Helen. They find out that Detective Rogers has framed them for the murder of officer Lammon.

The Tourist Ending: Is Elliot Dead or Alive? Why Does He Try to Kill Himself?

When Helen realizes that her and Elliot’s lives are being targeted, the probationary constable calls her colleague Freddie for help. Freddie discovers a speed camera photo that clearly shows that it was Detective Rogers who had Elliot under custody and not the other way, as the police officer told his superiors. Still, Elliot gets imprisoned for holding a group of people hostages. While he waits for the bail, Lena Pascal comes to see him . To a perplexed Elliot, Lena reveals that he used her and a group of women for heroin trafficking.

the tourist film ending

Lena shows the scar of the cut made to retrieve heroin bags from her stomach to Elliot and tells him how her comrades died during the mission. An astounded Elliot tries to dismiss her accusations but her persistence to let him know of his cruelties get better off him. His conscience gets filled with guilt as he realizes that he pushed two innocent women to death for his selfishness which he can’t even remember. The terrifying and upsetting presence, revelation, and scar of Lena escalate the guilt that grows in Elliot. His tearful eyes see Lena as the embodiment of his ruthlessness.

Upon Elliot’s release from prison, he contemplates life and the guilt leads him to commit suicide. After ensuring that Kosta’s $1 million will reach the hands of Sue, he crashes his own car to die. Elliot survives the crash and stays away from death but not for long. When Helen comes to know about Lena’s revelation, she confronts Elliot for being such a dreadful man. The bond they gradually nurture gets shattered when Helen realizes that she can’t accept what Elliot did to Lena and other women of her group. Seeing his “only friend in the whole wide world” walk away from him, Elliot decides to end his life.

The guilt of harming Lena and killing her friends and the grief of separating from Helen make Elliot vulnerable. In addition, the helplessness of not understanding whether anything about his past is actually true leads Elliot to death again. He swallows a handful of pills to die, expecting death to conquer him any second. The first season of the show ends before we get to see whether Elliot actually dies or not. Right after he swallows the pills, Elliot receives a message from Helen. He picks up the phone and sees a burrito emoji, the symbol of his happiness.

Helen’s message may give Elliot the satisfaction of dying peacefully, knowing that the one person he cares for in this world has forgiven him. He may still accept death and cherishes a moment of happiness seeing the emoji before he dies. Otherwise, Helen’s message may retrieve Elliot from the clutches of death. He may realize that Helen has forgiven him and there’s a ray of hope to be a better person. He may seek emergency medical assistance and stay alive to give himself a second chance at life as a new person. Either way, we may need to wait for the potential second season of the show to know without a doubt.

“The Tourist,” a 2010 American romantic thriller film directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, left many viewers scratching their heads with its unexpected twist ending. Starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, the movie takes us on a thrilling journey through the streets of Venice and Paris, filled with mystery, intrigue, and mistaken identities. However, it is the ending that truly leaves audiences in awe.

*Spoiler Alert*

In the final moments of “The Tourist,” it is revealed that Elise (played by Angelina Jolie) has been playing a double game all along. Throughout the film, she appears to be romantically involved with Frank (played by Johnny Depp), an American math teacher who happens to resemble her former lover, Alexander Pearce. Pearce is a notorious criminal wanted by both the British and Russian authorities for stealing billions of dollars from a gangster named Reginald Shaw.

As the story unfolds, Elise’s true intentions become clearer. She has been using Frank as a decoy to throw off the authorities and protect Pearce. It turns out that Frank is not actually Alexander Pearce but an ordinary American tourist who happened to be in Venice at the wrong time. Elise’s plan was to make everyone believe that Frank is Pearce so that she can safely deliver him to Shaw and collect her share of the stolen money.

The twist ending comes when it is revealed that Frank was aware of Elise’s plan all along. He willingly played along, knowing that he could use this opportunity to escape his mundane life and embrace adventure. In a surprising turn of events, Frank manages to outsmart both Elise and Shaw, leaving them empty-handed.

The ending leaves viewers with mixed emotions. On one hand, it is satisfying to see Frank outsmarting everyone and getting away with the stolen money. On the other hand, it raises questions about the true nature of Elise’s feelings towards Frank. Was she genuinely falling in love with him, or was it all part of her elaborate plan?

One interpretation is that Elise did develop genuine feelings for Frank throughout their time together. Despite her initial intentions, she couldn’t help but be drawn to his charm and kindness. However, the twist ending suggests that Elise’s loyalty ultimately lies with Pearce, as she chooses to let him escape rather than pursue a life with Frank.

Another interpretation is that Elise was simply a master manipulator who used her beauty and charm to get what she wanted. She saw Frank as nothing more than a pawn in her game, a means to an end. In this case, her supposed affection for him was nothing more than an act.

Regardless of one’s interpretation, “The Tourist” ending leaves audiences with a sense of intrigue and fascination. It challenges our perceptions of love, loyalty, and identity. The film reminds us that things are not always what they seem and that even the most unsuspecting individuals can have hidden depths.

In conclusion, “The Tourist” ending is a clever twist that adds an extra layer of complexity to an already thrilling storyline. It keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the very last moment, questioning the true motives and intentions of its characters. Whether you believe in Elise’s genuine affection for Frank or see her as a cunning manipulator, there is no denying the impact of this unexpected ending.

The Tourist ending explained as The Man, played by Jamie Dornan, discovers his past

Many fans might want The Tourist ending explained as the unmissable new mystery series finally reveals the dark secrets of The Man’s enigmatic past.

From the moment the new Jamie Dornan thriller The Tourist was announced last year it was clear that this was going to be one of 2022’s most unmissable shows. Starring The Fall’s Jamie as The Man, a tourist in Australia with no memory of who he really is after ending up in hospital, alongside Dumplin’ actor Danielle Macdonald, as Helen Chambers, a probationary police officer, danger lurks around every corner. Though he might not know why, it’s clear that someone is out to get him. The answer, as fans of fellow thrillers like Showtrial might have expected, lies in his past.

Though some viewers might want The Tourist ending explained after the sheer number of twists and turns that unfold in the final episode. The Tourist might still be airing on TV, but with all episodes on BBC iPlayer in the UK, fans could well have reached episode 6 ahead of their family and friends.

Here we give you *that* earth-shattering The Tourist ending explained…

*Warning: spoilers ahead!*

The Tourist featuring Jamie Dornan

The Tourist ending explained—what happened to The Man in episode 6?

Throughout The Tourist fans have been hooked by the dramatic revelations and increasingly intense situations The Man finds himself in. Determined to solve the mystery of his own identity after suffering from amnesia, Jamie Dornan’s character, revealed to be Elliot Stanley, ends up discovering more than he bargained for.

After being tracked and attacked by crime lord Kostas’ men throughout the series, Elliot and Luci (Kostas’ former fiancée) end up confronting the man himself. Luci manages to get Kostas’ brother Demetri on the phone to talk to him as she hopes this might help Kostas, who was hugely affected by Demetri's supposed death.

Instead, the criminal refuses to accept the truth and listens to his hallucination of his brother which tells him to kill her. Stepping in to try and save Luci, Elliot grabs a gun from detective Lachlan (who’d been blackmailed into helping Kostas after his wife was kidnapped). In the resulting struggle not only is Kostas fatally wounded, but so is Luci, whilst Lachlan drives off to find his wife.

Luci dies before Elliot can get her to hospital and rings Helen Chambers who comes to his aid. In yet another twist, Lachlan tries to cover his tracks after saving his wife and blames Helen and Elliot for his murder of fellow police officer Rodney Lammon. Helen and Elliot then go on the run while they attempt to find a way to prove that corrupt Lachlan was actually responsible.

The Tourist starring Jamie Dornan

Taking the customers of a restaurant hostage, Elliot asks the hostage negotiator to bring the mysterious Lena Pascal to him after memories of her have been coming back all series. Before this can happen and just in time before he and Helen are arrested, Helen secures traffic camera footage of Elliot in handcuffs in Lachlan’s car after Lammon’s murder, contradicting the detective’s claims.

Elliot and Helen are set to be cleared of the allegations against them, but whilst Jamie Dornan’s character’s time running from Kostas is now over, this wasn’t the only dramatic moment in The Tourist ending.

Who was The Man revealed to be in The Tourist ending?

The Tourist ending also sees Elliot finally come face to face with Lena Pascal, the woman whose face he kept seeing smiling back at him in his fragmented memories. Sadly, their reunion shatters an illusion he might’ve had about the nature of their relationship as Lena reveals that she was selected by Elliot to smuggle heroin for him. Two other women, Angelika and Mila, were also involved, only to tragically die after the bags the drugs were in burst in their stomachs.

The Tourist featuring Jamie Dornan

Elliot’s memories of Lena smiling at him arose from the times he made her practice ready for when she boarded the plane to smuggle the drugs so she’d appear convincing as someone simply going on vacation. Desperate to get the drugs back later, he’s told that he paid someone to cut them out of Lena, leaving her with a painful scar as well as the trauma of what had happened to her.

Telling him all this in prison, Lena tells Elliot that now he knows who he really is, he now must live with the truth. After being exonerated for the crimes committed by Lachlan, Elliot tries to get himself arrested for his past deeds, only for Lena to tell the officers he was mistaken.

The Tourist featuring Jamie Dornan

This means he remains free to go, the truth weighing so heavily on him that he drives himself off the road after first leaving a million dollars to Sue, the woman whose husband was killed by Kostas' man Billy. Waking up in hospital just as he did early on in The Tourist, this time, he answers Elliot Stanley when asked for his name.

Helen who was his only friend now begs him to tell her Lena made a mistake about him, but he’s unable to prove he wasn’t the monster she said. Heartbroken, Helen walks away, abandoning him to his living nightmare. As The Tourist ending reaches its final stages, Helen talks to co-worker Freddie in a bar, explaining how she cannot forget either Elliot’s crimes or the man himself.

The Tourist ending featuring Danielle Macdonald

Meanwhile, Elliot is driven by self-loathing and guilt to swallow a bottle of pills as he drinks heavily and seemingly wishes to take his own life. In the final scene, he receives a message from Helen, who’s been convinced that everyone deserves a second chance.

For anyone a little confused about the content of the message (a burrito emoji), this is a call-back to a conversation Helen and Elliot had previously. The criminal revealed that the thing that makes him happy is a burrito, making the police officer’s message a hint at a possible reconciliation…

Will there be a season 2 of The Tourist?

Though some viewers of this twisty thriller might have wanted The Tourist ending explained, the dramatic scenes and stunning performances make this one to watch this winter. Sadly, no The Tourist season 2 has been confirmed, though given that final scene, it’s of course possible that Jamie Dornan, Danielle Macdonald and their fellow cast members will be back on our screens at some point in the future.

The question of whether Helen’s message came too late remains to be answered. If there is indeed time to save Elliot from the pills he’s taken, then her text will likely have given him the incentive to seek help.

The Tourist featuring Danielle Macdonald

After all, he once referred to her as his only friend in the world. It was also him Helen chose over her former fiancé Ethan when issued with the ultimatum of aiding Elliot or being with him. And in light of Elliot’s criminal past and connections and how his understanding of who he is is built on what Lena has told him, there’s still much that could be explored about his former life in any potential second season of The Tourist.

Until any further announcement is made, however, there’s plenty of time to get immersed in similarly atmospheric dramas, from true crime series Landscapers , to Shetland series 6 where DI Jimmy Perez is pushed to breaking point.

How many episodes of The Tourist are there and how to watch

If you’re yet to reach the sixth and final episode of The Tourist season 1 but couldn’t wait to get some sneaky clues about the ending, or just want to re-watch your favourite moments, then catching-up couldn’t be simpler. For anyone who prefers watching the episodes on TV, then all six episodes are still currently airing on a weekly basis on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm.

Jamie Dornan's The Tourist season 1 ending explained – What does that final twist mean?

"Expect the unexpected."

preview for Jamie Dornan Transformation Timeline

The Tourist season 1 episode 6 spoilers follow.

What starts out as an intriguing thriller about a man suffering from amnesia soon becomes a far more unique treatise on morality and the cost of losing one's self entirely. That's not all, though. The Tourist jumps between genres too, scattered like The Man's erratic thoughts, and in doing so, the show proves itself to be so much more than just another BBC primetime thriller.

Co-star Danielle MacDonald wasn't kidding when she told us " to expect the unexpected ". But even then, few could have expected that ending in the final moments of episode six.

The Tourist ending explained

shalom brune franklin, jamie dornan, the tourist

When we first meet Jamie Dornan's character, all we know is that he's a bad singer. Thankfully his rendition of 'Bette Davis Eyes' is soon cut short when a truck drives him off the road and in the crash that follows, The Man loses his memory, leaving him to try and fend for himself in the Australian Outback without even a name to call his own.

A woman named Luci quickly befriends The Man, but by the end of episode one, it becomes clear that she's not who she seems. Then there's also Helen, a local traffic cop who soon gets involved with the case.

Together, these three become embroiled in twist after twist until it's eventually revealed that The Man's real name is Elliot Stanley. But why are so many people after him? What could he have possibly done to warrant this mad chase?

Towards the end, we discover that Elliot worked as an accountant for a drug lord named Kostas, the mysterious figure played by Alex Dimitriades. Elliot went on the run after he fell in love with Kostas' fiancée, who turns out to be none other than Luci. And that's not all. The Man formerly known as "The Man" also stole a bag with over £1 million stashed inside. The pair were supposed to share this cash, but they kept breaking up.

Up to this point, you might have assumed that Elliot isn't such a bad guy, at least not compared to Kostas. But after he trips on LSD, the so-called accountant finally discovers the identity of the woman who keeps popping up in his flashbacks, Lena Pascal.

And when the two finally meet, Elliot realises that his past self used to force people to smuggle heroin for Kostas. This led to the tragic deaths of two women who were killed when the bags filled with drugs exploded inside of them.

If learning his true identity was hard for Elliot, it certainly wasn't easy for Dornan to film.

"It was crazy," the actor told Entertainment Weekly . "I felt very raw in that moment, I felt very exposed, and vulnerable and kind of awful and terrible about myself. She was doing such beautiful work in front of me and it was having the impact that I felt that it should have."

He added: "Sometimes you get yourself in a place where you feel so broken that you can't actually stop crying. [ Laughs ] I felt a bit like that that day in a good way, I guess. I felt very exposed, very vulnerable. You know, it's hard stuff to hear, the hardest stuff to hear, so a lot of that luckily was on the page for me in terms of the writing. But, yeah, not an easy day, that."

Wracked with overwhelming remorse, Elliot struggles to reconcile these past actions with the man he is now. And knowing that Helen no longer supports him either, everything suddenly becomes too much to bear.

In The Tourist 's final moments, Elliot tries to kill himself by crashing his car. When that doesn't work, he takes an overdose in the hospital, desperate to escape his all-consuming guilt. Without Helen, he sees no way out from the pain, except a text arrives from her all too late, one that suggests the pair could potentially reconcile, assuming of course that Elliot survives...

"After I finished the series, I called Shalom [Brune-Franklin] instantly," Danielle MacDonald told us before the finale aired. "And I was like, 'I can't talk to anyone about this, because no-one's read it, and I'm not allowed to say anything, so I need you to talk to me about it. We just need to talk about this whole situation.'"

Viewers felt the same, taking to Twitter to discuss what's turned out to be a rather divisive ending. While some loved the ambiguity that surrounds Elliot's fate, others lamented Helen's end, hoping to see her thrive more in her career.

Those who were left disappointed by the end probably wish that Dornan had been serious when he joked with us that "the whole series ends with Armageddon, so life doesn't exist anymore". Although, to be fair, he wasn't wrong exactly, at least when it comes to Elliot's fate...

Will The Tourist return for season 2 ?

Although at the end of The Tourist 's first season, we didn't know for certain if Elliot actually dies or not – and the show felt like a one-and-done deal in many ways – it was soon confirmed by the BBC that The Tourist will return for season 2 .

Before the official announcement, talk of a potential second season was raised with The Tourist creators Harry and Jack Williams (who were previously known for helming shows like Baptiste , Liar and The Missing ).

ep2 stars shalom brune franklin

"I would love to make this show again with these people," Harry told Radio Times . "I'm not entirely sure it's possible. I love the tone, I love the world. It's been our lives for three years and we've been very, very involved with it, more so than any other show.

"We've loved every minute. Normally you're sick of it by this point having watched 900 cuts of one episode but I still love it and I'd love to do it again."

Jack chimed in too, saying that: "We are talking about how we could return to this world, aren’t we?" To which Harry added: "Yeah, this world and this tone. I feel like we're not done with that. In terms of the story, we'll see how it goes if people like it."

A second season of The Tourist could also star Jamie Dornan in the lead – which means that Elliot might have survived, after all. Before official word of the renewal, Dornan said that "conversations are being had" about a second run , and that he'd "love to" be involved.

"I read episode six later than Danielle Macdonald because she texted me going, 'Oh my God, have you read episode six?' Dornan said (via Collider ). "And I was like, 'No.' She was like, 'Please read it and get back to me.' And I was like, 'Okay.'

"But then, it probably took me another week before I even got to reading it, to be honest. Just like every other episode, it was unexpected, but I loved it. We were only ever making one of these. It was like, 'Let’s just do one series.'

"That remains the setup. But I know, certainly in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and anywhere that’s seen it, the reception has been so insane, that there’s definitely a demand and a want for more, so we’ll talk about that and we’ll see about that."

But then again, there are more than enough colourful characters who could propel this story forward without The Man, if necessary. And who wouldn't want to see more of Danielle MacDonald in the role of Helen? Even if we don't see Elliot again, a second season of The Tourist could still bring us another unforgettable storyline.

The Tourist is available on BBC iPlayer.

The Tourist Ending: Jamie Dornan’s Character And Final Plot Twist Explained

2022 went off with a bang with jamie dornan's gripping bbc thriller series..

Laura Sanders

Laura Sanders

We’ve all been gripped by Jamie Dornan’s The Tourist on BBC One this past week, which came to a somewhat confusing ending.

The Fifty Shades star fronted the six-part BBC thriller as a British tourist lost in the Australian outback, injured and with no idea who he is or what he was running from. After a truck succeeds in running him off the road, The Man (Jamie’s unknown character) wakes up in hospital with amnesia.

Viewers are taken along on The Man’s journey to self-discovery, with numerous plot twists and turns along the way. The TV series was released on New Year’s Day and now fans are trying to work out who Jamie Dornan’s character is and what happened .

Warning: Spoilers for The Tourist in the rest of this article.

The Tourist ending explained: who is The Man?

Jamie Dornan stars in BBC thriller The Tourist. (

As the series progresses, we find out The Man’s name is actually Elliot Stanley and that he worked as an accountant to drug lord Kostas.

Turns out, Elliot went on the run from the drug lord after he fell in love with his fiancée and stole his precious bag containing over £1million stashed inside.

But we learn that Elliot did more for Kostas than just crunch numbers; after an LSD-fuelled trip of his own, Elliot discovers the identity of the woman he keeps having flashbacks to.

After tracking down the mystery woman, she revealed that Elliot forced people to smuggle heroin, which led to the death of two girls after the bags exploded inside them.

Unable to live with the knowledge of the person he used to be, and knowing he’d lost his ally and support in Helen (Danielle Macdonald), Elliot takes an overdose. Then, in the last few moments, he sees a text from Helen suggesting they could reconcile.

The ending, quite understandably, left fans confused, with lots of unanswered questions. But despite that, viewers have been praising Jamie Dornan and his co-stars’ performance on Twitter.

“Just watched the entire series of #TheTourist, on @BBCiPlayer. One word: Epic,” wrote one Twitter user.

“It was worth staying up until 3am to binge watch The Tourist. Well done Jamie Dornan and the other actors it was a top show lots of twists and turns #TheTourist,” said another binge-watcher.

“THE BENCHMARK AS BEEN SET FOR 2022… CAST 100%… WRITING 100%,” exclaimed another.

The Tourist is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.

Where Was ‘The Tourist’ Season 2 Filmed? Top Filming Locations

Jamie dornan “wasn’t pleased” with the ballet scene in ‘the tourist’ season 2 finale, stream it or skip it: ‘the tourist’ season 2 on netflix, where jamie dornan’s amnesia-riddled character returns home to ireland, will there be a ‘the tourist’ season 3 jamie dornan isn’t sure: “i’m pretty busy until the end of 2025”.

The Tourist follows a car crash victim ( Jamie Dornan ) who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia and tries to uncover his past after suspecting that dangerous people want to kill him.

The first season sees the man learning the basics about himself and navigating the logistics of his situation– dealing with lawyers, doctors, and whatnot. He is told that his name is Elliot and he’s involved in a drug trafficking ring.

Elliot also makes amends with Helen, portrayed by Danielle Macdonald , a police officer whom he kidnaps while on the run but grows close with.

The second season changes things up. Taking a darker route, the new episodes give greater insight into the people chasing Elliot and his family relations.

Elliot’s mother Niahm (Olwen Fouéré) is introduced, along with his enemy Donal McDonnell (Diarmaid Murtagh) and Donal’s son Fergal ( Mark McKenna ).

With tons of twists and turns, and a budding romance between Elliot and Helen, the journey to the end of Season 2 can get confusing. Need help ironing out the details? Here’s a breakdown of The Tourist Season 2, now streaming on Netflix .

What Was on Elliot’s File?

Once again, the season finale of The Tourist sees Helen unsure if she can be in Elliot’s (now known as Eugene) life given his dangerous past. The episode opens in the aftermath of Donal’s death and it’s revealed that Elliot’s prints are all over the gun that killed him. Elliot denies his involvement in the death, despite having a motive. Helen visits Elliot at the police station and breaks up with him.

“I don’t know you,” Helen tells Elliot in a tearful monologue. “I don’t know who you really are and that… I wish that it was different. I wish that I could just be happy.”

“We still can be,” Elliot says.

“I’m sorry,” Helen replies before standing up to leave.

Elliot tells Helen that he loves her and she says, “I love you too, but it’s not enough.”

Meanwhile, crime lord Frank (Francis Magee) is trying to convince Fergal to seek revenge on Elliot for killing Donal, and he hesitantly agrees after his family’s legacy is mentioned. Frank arranges for Elliot to be released from the police station.

Upon being released, Niamh warns Elliot that Frank wants him dead. Elliot claims that the current feud is not his fate and he doesn’t want to be involved.

Helen goes to the airport and bumps into her ex Ethan (Greg Larsen) and his new friend Detective Ruairi (Conor MacNeill), and the detective tells her about Frank’s arrangement. They decide to team together to help Elliot. Oh, we love where this is going.

Elliot takes a different approach and asks Fergal to help him hide from Frank, which lands them both in trouble with Frank. After a car chase, they meet with Niamh at Cassidy’s Pub, and she is doubtful of Fergal’s intentions.

Later, Helen, Ruairi, and Ethan — who have been digging into the secrets of Elliot and Niamh’s past — arrive at the pub, shortly after Frank and his gang has arrived. Before violence can break out over the latest revelation that Niamh killed Donal, Helen reveals that she has found the missing case from Frank’s father that Niamh stole.

Inside the case are love letters between Niamh’s mother and Frank’s father, which reveal that the two are half-siblings. Niamh tries to shoot Helen, but Elliot stands between them.

“We are not blood,” Niamh tells Frank. “We’ve spilled too much of each other’s to be anywhere fucking near that.” But Frank seems touched by the news. Elliot tells Niamh that she’s going to have to shoot him if she wants to get to Helen, and she refuses.

At this moment, Ethan offers some comedic relief, saying, “A lot of potential for incest here… with the two families.”

Niamh storms out of the pub and says she can’t forget the past, and Elliot and Helen kiss and make up.

The episode concludes with a brief time jump that sees Elliot and Helen living in Amsterdam. Elliot has received a file with information about his old life but has been waiting for Helen to open it. She arrives home and expresses that she doesn’t want to open it and she’d rather stay present in the new life they’ve built for each other. Elliot burns the file in the fireplace.

Hilariously, Helen carts them off to a theater and she encourages him to dance since Niahm insisted he was a skilled ballet dancer in his youth. Elliot shows off his skills as the file burns in the fireplace. Before completely turning to ash, it is revealed that the file reads that Elliot was a secret agent.

Well, that left us with a few burning questions.

Jamie Dornan on Elliot and Helen’s Relationship

Decider spoke with Dornan ahead of the Netflix release of the new season. The Irish actor expressed that Elliot and Helen’s decision to burn the file was a “good thing.”

“They need to try to have some normalcy in their lives,” Dornan told us. “They’ve gone to Amsterdam, it’s a fresh start. [Elliot’s] grown his hair a bit. They’re trying to live a normal life. The past in the past. Let’s get rid of that.” Though, Dornan acknowledges that because the viewers are aware of what’s in the file, the show has opened itself to “endless possibilities.”

“What happens next? How much of that will Helen and Elliot get to know? It felt like a ploy… like we could do more of the story. But I think for the relationship, it was probably the right thing to do… sort of wash them of all that crap. They don’t need to know any of that stuff. They close the door,” Dornan concluded.

Despite the setup for a third season, Dornan isn’t sure that it will happen . “I don’t know if there’s been conversations had about that. We’re staying out of  all that  and seeing if it happens. I don’t think it’ll happen. I’m pretty busy now until the end of 2025, so it’ll be a while,” he shared.

He said: "There is a little nod at the very end of this season that does suggest some interesting avenues for exploration, I would say.

*WARNING: CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS FOR ALL SIX EPISODES OF THE TOURIST SEASON 2 - NOW AVAILABLE ON BBC iPLAYER*

The Tourist season 2 ending explained: What is the twist?

Elliot (Jamie Dornan) and Fergal (Mark McKenna) in The Tourist sat at a table, talking

One of the most crucial pieces of information we learned this season about Jamie Dornan's character, Elliot Stanley, is that he was not, in fact, Elliot Stanley .

Instead, he was Eugene Cassidy , the son of Niamh, matriarch of the Cassidy family, who had been locked in a brutal feud with the McDonnell family for decades. He also seemingly had a penchant and talent for ballet. Go figure.

When Eugene was younger, he had had an affair with Donal McDonnell's wife, Claire, and the two had had a son, Fergal. Donal had tried to kill Eugene, but had instead killed his brother by mistake.

Feeling guilty for his brother's death, this is why Eugene left Ireland in the first place, with Donal left raising Fergal and keeping his ancestry a secret.

When leaving the country, he had taken the name Elliot Stanley... but why?

Who was the real Elliot Stanley?

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist wearing an orange jumper and green jacket, with fields in the background

The real Elliot Stanley was a diver, who Frank McDonnell hired to find a downed plane which his father had been on. His father had called him telling him he had important information to share, but had died on the plane before he could show him.

Hoping to find what was inside, Frank hired Elliot. However, Elliot had also become acquainted with Niamh Cassidy, and had travelled down to the plane with her.

While there, she handcuffed him to the plane and sliced his breathing apparatus with a knife, killing him so he couldn't reveal the truth of what had been found there.

Helen, Ruairi and Ethan discovered this when they met with Elliot's widow Deirdre, who also hinted that Elliot was in fact Eugene's father.

This would explain the resemblance between Eugene and Elliot, as well as, perhaps, why he took his name.

How did the family feud come to an end?

Frank (Francis Magee), Donal (Diarmaid Murtagh) and Asim (Assad Raza) in The Tourist gathered together in a white bricked building

The feud ramped up to new levels when Niamh killed Donal, and everyone assumed it had been Eugene that had done so. The two families met at the Cassidy pub, ready for an all-out war.

However, Helen got there just in the nick of time, having located the files that Frank's father had wanted to show him. Niamh had buried them near the coast years ago, hoping to stop anyone from finding out what she had once she read them.

It turned out that the files were, in fact, love letters between Frank's father and Niamh's mother. They had had an affair, which they kept quiet because of the family feud, but this meant that Frank and Niamh were, in reality, brother and sister.

Niamh had tried to bury the secret because she couldn't forget the past and all that had happened between the two families. Frank seemed willing to forget the past and move on as one joined family, but Niamh stormed out of the pub, unable to do so. Where the two families went from here is unclear.

Did Helen and Elliot get together in The Tourist season 2?

Helen (Danielle Macdonald) and Elliot (Jamie Dornan) in The Tourist holding hands, sitting on a wooden bench by a lake

Yes, Helen and Eugene managed to put his past actions and the mystery surrounding him behind them, and moved into a flat together in Amsterdam.

However, there was one last twist in the tale. After Eugene was arrested for Donal's murder earlier in the finale, an article had been published in the local newspaper. Someone had seemingly seen this, tracked Eugene down, and sent him a file on his past.

What was in the file in The Tourist season 2?

Neither Eugene or Helen read it, with both saying they didn't care about his past. Eugene put it in the fire and burned it, and the pair went off to test whether he had retained any of his dancing skills post-amnesia.

However, while they never saw what was in the files, we got a glimpse as the cover burned away. It turns out Eugene was a special agent, at least as far back as 2005.

Exactly what this means for Eugene's past, or indeed the future of The Tourist, remains to be seen...

The Tourist ending explained: What happened in the final episode of Jamie Dornan’s BBC drama series

The tourist, a new bbc drama series starring jamie dornan, remains a head-spinning series throughout its six episodes.

WARNING: Embargoed for publication until 00:00:01 on 23/12/2021 - Programme Name: The Tourist - TX: n/a - Episode: Episode 2 (No. 2) - Picture Shows: The Man (JAMIE DORNAN), Luci (SHALOM BRUNE-FRANKLIN) - (C) Two Brothers Pictures - Photographer: Ian Routledge

The Tourist , a gripping new series set against the harsh backdrop of the Australian outback, arrived on BBC One on New Year’s Day.

While the series is airing weekly on BBC One, you watch the whole lot whenever you like  on BBC iPlayer .

So it’s likely that many viewers will already know that unsurprisingly the ending, while giving a lot of answers, also asks a few extra questions.

Here’s everything you need to know, and for the absence of any doubt MAJOR SPOILERS FOLLOW…

How did Jamie Dornan’s character end up in Australia?

We eventually discover that Jamie Dornan’s mysterious character was called Elliot , and was previously a criminal working for a notorious crime lord called Kosta.

But Elliot found himself in love with Kosta’s girlfriend, Luci, and fled to Australia with her and $1 million of Kosta’s money.

Kosta tracks them down and sends his underlings to deal with them, but as one of them is friends with Elliot, the two are given a warning.

A later scuffle sees Luci and Kosta both shot, and Elliot drives off, just before a the car crash that gives him amnesia and provides the basis for the entire series.

Who is Lena in The Tourist ?

When Elliot finally meets Lena, the warm and affectionate woman who’d consistently appeared in the fragments of his memories, he learned that her happiness was all a facade.

Lena was actually a trafficking victim of Elliot’s, one of three woman who smuggled heroin within their stomachs into Australia for him.

She’d appeared affectionate in his memories because Elliot had made her smile and appear relaxed to rehearse her acting.

The other two women had died when the bags of heroin exploded in her stomach, and Lena’s was cut out on Elliot’s orders by one of his colleagues, leaving a nasty injury.

After the truth is revealed Lena then leaves, telling Elliot that his punishment is having to live with his evil actions.

Does Jamie Dornan’s character die at the end of The Tourist ?

Helen, the rookie police officer who formed a bond with Elliot, is disgusted upon hearing his true character and leaves him alone.

Also repulsed at himself, Elliot attempts to overdose with a cocktail of drugs and alcohol, and lies dying on the ground.

As he does so, Helen finds it within herself to accept Elliot for who he is now, not what he was before. She texts him a burrito emoji, burritos being Elliot’s “happy place”.

The series ends as this message makes him raise a smile, so it’s all very ambiguous: Elliot is most likely dead, but the story has left everything open for a potential second series.

What do the reviews of  The Tourist  say?

The Tourist has been well received by critics, with i ‘s Gerard Gilbert praising how “neat simplicity of the premise was enhanced by the barren desert backdrop”.

He adds “Dornan was well cast as the man with no name,” and says that the series “could be among the [Williams brothers’] best work yet”.

“If Channel 4’s ludicrous recent Close to Me made you want to forget all about amnesia thrillers,” Gilbert concludes, “ The Tourist reminds you why they can also be memorably moreish.”

The Guardian ‘s Lucy Mangan agreed that it is “well worth watching this fun, stylish and confident caper”, while Ed Cumming wrote in The Independent that the series “might be [Dornan’s] best work yet”.

The Tourist Season 3: Jamie Dornan Is "Busy For The Next Few Years"

T he Tourist on Netflix gathered quite the fanbase in recent weeks, following the story of Elliot on his quest to regain his memories – quite the task if you know nothing about yourself and with people trying to kill you while you figure out who you actually are.

The Tourist was initially planned as a mini-series with only six episodes, but after the response the show got from fans, it was renewed for a second season by Netflix, bringing Elliot (Jamie Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) to Ireland to follow a new lead to Elliot's past.

And, not to spoil anything, but the ending of season 2 is complete bonkers. It also sets up a potential third season if creators Harry and Jack Williams are so inclined – and if the cast is on board. Jamie Dornan shares some more insight on that.

Jamie Dornan Says He's "Very Busy For The Next Couple Of Years"

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , lead actor and our favorite amnesia-stricken traveler Jamie Dornan was asked about the chances of season 3 of The Tourist happening. We're still waiting for an official announcement by Netflix, but they have remained tight-lipped on that front. Dornan, on the other hand, shared bits and pieces.

He said there are "conversations" about a new season – honestly, we've figured as much. With the ending of season 2 being the ending that it is, there's quite a lot to unpack about Elliot's past. That's ideal for another season and, to be frank, it's a little obvious that the Williams aren't done telling their story.

It's not only in their hands if that happens, though: Netflix needs to give green light, and, ideally, the cast needs to be ready. And that's a problem, at least for now, as Dornan shared that he's " very busy for the next couple of years " – basically too busy for another season of The Tourist, at least for now.

The Tourist's Season 3 Would Take Place In The Netherlands

Just because a third season doesn't seem too likely in the near future, that doesn't mean there are no plans for it already. At the end of the last season, Elliot (or rather: Eugene) and Helen went off to Amsterdam, so chances are – if the show gets renewed, of course – we'll pick up right where we left off. Dornan would be on board with that, too:

There's probably a world where it happens in Holland in some capacity, if they were to do more, which wouldn't be a bad thing. I like the Dutch, they're an interesting bunch, and always really fun, and it's a beautiful place. But who knows!

Dornan also told Tudum that he's not the only one with a busy schedule, so going to Amsterdam is hard for his co-stars as well, even though the ending of the show is purposely open-ended: " I think this time they are leaving [the future of the show] to all kinds of factors –– of if and when and how that would happen to do more –– and to see if people want more. But that's also a timing thing. Everyone's busy! I'm busy, Danielle's busy. So we will see, but they've definitely left the option open, I think. "

There is still hope for season 3 of The Tourist, then – as soon as there's news, you can be sure we'll keep you updated!

10 most satisfying movie endings of all time.

Sometimes the best way to end a movie is by giving audiences the uplifting conclusion that they want, and this can turn good movies into great ones.

  • Endings can make or break a movie, leaving a lasting impact on audiences for years to come.
  • From defeating monsters to surprising twists, a good ending can elevate a movie from good to great.
  • Whether happy or mysterious, a satisfying finale can create a cathartic release for audiences feeling invested in the story.

A good ending can improve how people see an entire movie, and some of the best endings live long in the memory. Conversely, disappointing endings can ruin a movie . It's important to leave an audience on a high note, whether that means crafting a mysterious movie ending that will keep people thinking about it for a while, or simply giving audiences a happy ending. Sometimes there's no way to beat an uplifting, satisfying finale.

As much as people enjoy a good puzzle, there are times when an unequivocal happy ending is the best option. These endings can create cathartic releases for audiences who have been empathizing with the protagonists throughout their journey. Even some depressing movies can leave the audience with a completely different feeling if they end on an optimistic note

10 Movie Endings That Took The Film From Good To Great

10 the untouchables (1987), al capone is found guilty and prohibition is repealed.

The ending of The Untouchables reveals the true depth of Ness' apathy toward the laws of Prohibition. For him, the fight was all about stamping out gang violence.

Based on the true story of Eliot Ness' pursuit of Al Capone during the Prohibition era, The Untouchables stars Kevin Costner as the leader of a band of misfits who team up to lay down the law. Each with their own motivations, the men are drawn together by a firm adherence to the law, even if the law that they are trying so desperately to uphold isn't unanimously respected. Some of the cops sneak a drink on occasion, but they are still committed to stopping Capone's bootlegging empire.

The ending of The Untouchables reveals the true depth of Ness' apathy toward the laws of Prohibition. For him, the fight was all about stamping out gang violence. Having seen his own men die in the line of duty, and having pushed one of Capone's men off of a rooftop in a fit of rage, Ness wins his court case against the gangster . Soon afterward, he is told by a reporter that Prohibition has been officially repealed. The reporter questions what he'll do next, and he delivers one of the best final lines in movie history , "I think I'll have a drink."

Quentin Tarantino changes history in Inglourious Basterds, which makes the ending feel like a huge twist, even though it's a fairly straightforward development within the context of the story. After constructing an elaborate plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler at a movie screening in Paris, the shocking twist is that the plan works. As the movie theater goes up in flames, one of the American undercover soldiers tears Hitler apart with incessant fire from his machine gun.

Hitler's death is a cathartic fantasy , a brief moment that lets the audience believe that the end of the Second World War came a little sooner and with a more picturesque moment of triumph. It may be typical of Tarantino's love of overblown violence, but the massacre in the movie theater pales in comparison to some of the atrocities carried out by the Nazis on a daily basis during the war. There is just one loose end to tie up. Hans Landa strikes a deal to ensure his safety after the Allied victory, so Aldo Raine etches a swastika into his forehead, marking him forever as a despicable villain.

8 Jaws (1975)

Brody and hooper defeat the shark.

Jaws is ostensibly a monster movie, but it gets most of its narrative thrust from the captivating dynamic between its three main characters.

Jaws is ostensibly a monster movie, but it gets most of its narrative thrust from the captivating dynamic between its three main characters. As they go out to sea together to try and catch the shark that has been terrorizing Amity Island, the wait for it to appear lets them slowly reveal more about themselves, and they form a strange bond despite their obvious differences. The dramatic climax sees Brody and Hooper team up to finally kill the shark, although Quint doesn't make it out alive.

As the action subsides and morning breaks, the two surviving men paddle away from their wrecked boat and back to shore. It's an optimistic ending after such a violent finale. Both men know that they have ensured the safety of the local people, but they have also conquered their personal demons in the process. Brody comments that he has gotten over his fear of the ocean , and the men enjoy their brief swim, knowing that the waters are peaceful once again.

7 Groundhog Day (1993)

Phil breaks the cycle and starts a new day.

Groundhog Day 's ending shows that the mysterious time loop was probably some kind of test for Phil, making the entire story an obscure moralistic fable.

Groundhog Day stars Bill Murray as Phil, a misanthropic weather reporter who is forced by some unseen power to live the same day over and over again. Phil essentially grieves his own death throughout the movie, flipping between deep depression and nihilistic hedonism. The main through line of his chaotic non-linear story is his love for his coworker Rita, played by Andie MacDowell.

Groundhog Day 's ending shows that the mysterious time loop was probably some kind of test for Phil, making the entire story an obscure moralistic fable. Phil only gets to wake up the following day when he spends enough time improving himself and breaking down his arrogant, isolated front. The intense repetition of Groundhog Day makes every little difference in the final scene feel like a miracle , and after Phil has slowly become a character who people might actually want to root for, he finally gets a moment of unfettered happiness.

6 The Incredibles (2004)

The parr family suits up for another fight.

The Incredibles pulls off the difficult trick of making a cliffhanger ending feel completely satisfying.

The Incredibles pulls off the difficult trick of making a cliffhanger ending feel completely satisfying. After the Parr family celebrate Dash's expertly restrained third-place finish at his track meet, a new villain pops up from beneath the ground to once again plunge the city into chaos. The heroes put on their masks, ready to fight together as a family, but the credits roll before showing what happens to the Underminer.

The Incredibles is all about the tension of whether superheroes will ever be allowed to exercise their powers again, and it's especially focused on how the Parr family can function in a world where they have to conceal the most remarkable parts of themselves. The fact that they can fight the Underminer is a huge triumph, no matter how the fight actually goes. The sudden appearance of another outlandish villain also mimics the Saturday morning cartoons which inspired so much of the visual style of The Incredibles.

5 The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Andy and red reunite on a beach in mexico.

The Shawshank Redemption is extremely downbeat at times, but it has an unequivocally happy ending.

The Shawshank Redemption is extremely downbeat at times, but it has an unequivocally happy ending. After serving 20 years in prison for a crime he insists he did not commit, Andy finally breaks out by tunneling from his cell to the outside. Later, Red is released from prison having served his time, and he follows Andy's carefully laid breadcrumbs to a small town in Mexico, where the two reunite as free men for the first time.

The Shawshank Redemption 's ending is key to the movie's enduring appeal. It's a hopeful message that good people can still triumph in a corrupt system designed to keep them down. The different ways Andy and Red reach Mexico are also important. Red does his time and comes out the other side, which is more than can be said for some other characters. Andy rejects the system entirely and lives life by his own rules. Both men get to enjoy the warm sunshine on the beach in the end, despite all the horrific injustices they have been forced to endure.

4 The Life Of Brian (1979)

Brian is crucified and has to endure a singalong in his final moments.

Brian's death is the ultimate punch line to his ridiculous ordeal, just as death is the ultimate punch line to anyone's life.

After trying to convince everyone that he isn't the messiah, Brian only manages to do the exact opposite. He becomes the center of a frenzy, with his followers begging him for pieces of wisdom and the Romans seeking to suppress the rising tide of religious fervor. Ultimately, he is sentenced to death by crucifixion, and he becomes a reluctant martyr for a cause he doesn't believe in or even understand.

The Life of Brian is the most popular of Monty Python's movies , and the ending is a big reason for this. Brian's death is the ultimate punch line to his ridiculous ordeal, just as death is the ultimate punch line to anyone's life. The Life of Brian constructs an uplifting finale about a man who is being unjustly executed by the state. The song, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," is the cherry on top , with a whistling section that just seems custom-made for audience participation.

3 Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989)

Indy and his friends ride off into the sunset after defeating the nazis.

The ending enshrines Indy as one of the great cinematic action heroes, and it completes his arc as a pulp adventurer who gradually reveals more emotional depth with the introduction of his father.

The original trilogy for the Indiana Jones franchise ends in style, with Indy and his friends riding off into the sunset after cheating death and foiling another Nazi plot. This is a brilliant ending to the movie, but it's also a fitting end to the trilogy. It enshrines Indy as one of the great cinematic action heroes, and it completes his arc as a pulp adventurer who gradually reveals more emotional depth with the introduction of his father.

Very few franchises, trilogies or eras have ended so perfectly. The Harry Potter franchise, the Star Wars original trilogy and Phase Three of the MCU are three notable exceptions, but there are far more franchises which fizzle out with a whimper. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull faced a tough challenge trying to continue the story after such a perfect ending.

2 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Harry and sally realize they are meant to be together.

Over the course of 12 years, Harry and Sally go from polar opposites to friends, and eventually to lovers when they recognize their deep connection.

When Harry Met Sally is a perfect rebuttal to anyone who carries a cynical view of love. Over the course of 12 years, Harry and Sally go from polar opposites to friends, and eventually to lovers when they recognize their deep connection. Harry, originally a cold-hearted cynic with sex constantly on his mind, has an epiphany on New Year's Eve and rushes to see Sally. He delivers one of the most emotional speeches in romcom history , and they kiss at midnight.

When Harry Met Sally almost had a different ending , which would have been much less satisfying than the final version. In Rob Reiner's original vision, Harry and Sally remain friends. This anticlimactic ending was inspired by the director's personal life. At the time he wrote the original draft, he had been single for a decade and didn't believe that he would find love again, but he met his next wife while filming When Harry Met Sally.

1 The Truman Show (1998)

Truman takes his final bow and escapes seahaven.

The Truman Show 's ending suggests that life may be messy, but it's a ride worth taking.

The Truman Show is a masterclass in dramatic irony, with the entire plot revolving around the fact that Truman is the only person who doesn't know that his entire world is the set of an elaborate TV show. This makes him very easy to root for, as the audience wants to see him break free from his strange imprisonment and live an authentic life. Nobody in Truman's world is free from blame for his perverse circumstances, so his eventual escape is an extremely satisfying moment of victory.

As Truman takes his final bow and leaves Seahaven, his future is uncertain, but he has managed to break free from the picture-perfect artifice of his own reality show. This constitutes a triumph, no matter what happens next. The Truman Show 's ending suggests that life may be messy, but it's a ride worth taking. As for Truman's viewers, they simply wonder what else is on TV , showing that they haven't been deeply affected by anything they've just witnessed.

Where To Watch 'The First Omen': Find Showtimes for the Horror Prequel

An influential horror classic finds new life after 18 years.

Quick Links

When is the release date for 'the first omen', is 'the first omen' in theaters, find showtimes for 'the first omen', watch the trailers for 'the first omen', other movies about demonic possession you can watch right now.

For the first time since 2006, The Omen franchise is returning for an all-new prequel, The First Omen . Taking place several years before the Devil and the Antichrist tormented the citizens of London in the original 1976 film, this new entry is set in the heart of the Christian religion - Rome. There, a young American nun named Margaret ( Nell Tiger Free ) witnesses unexplainable and horrific events that are tearing her worldview apart. Even worse, some of the clergy and priests not only acknowledge the presence of a satanic force, but it almost appears as if they are encouraging it.

The Omen franchise has been around for decades, but the general consensus is that none of the follow-ups have matched the impeccable quality of the 1976 classic. Despite having numerous sequels, each and every one of them did not resonate with critics the same way Richard Donner 's original did, often being seen by the horror community as shameless cash-grabs not unlike The Exorcist franchise ( Exorcist III being the exception). The 2006 remake starring Liev Schrieber didn't fare much better either, as it was released at a time when modernized horror remakes tended to miss the point of the original.

The First Omen has the chance to finally break the franchise's long losing streak , especially with a talented director like Arkasha Stevenson . Plus, the film just so happens to be releasing at the perfect time, as nunsploitation films are all the rage now following Sydney Sweeney 's Immaculate , which has become a surprise horror hit. To find out when you can see the first arrival of the antichrist unfold, here is where you can watch The First Omen .

The First Omen

A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, but encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

The First Omen will reveal itself when the feature film of the same name officially premieres on Friday, April 5, 2024 , in the United States and Canada, which is, ironically, one week after Easter Sunday. Some territories will be getting the film that same day, others a week or so later, and some have already gotten to experience the anticipated horror flick. To find out if and when The First Omen is screening in your country of residence, refer to the chart below :

Just as the first film did in the 1970s, The First Omen will also be released exclusively in theaters . The first weekend of April is a pretty packed one, and The First Omen does have a slight advantage over its competition by being the only theatrical film from a pre-existing franchise. The big heavyweight title The First Omen will contend with is Dev Patel 's feature directorial debut, Monkey Man , which has been frequently described as a John Wick -type action thrill ride set in India. Also in the mix is Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley 's foul-mouthed satire Wicked Little Letters , which tells the surprisingly true story of an English town ransacked by rude notes to strangers. Finally, acclaimed filmmaker Luc Besson has a new movie with the revenge thriller, Dogman .

To see if The First Omen is playing in a theater near you and purchase your tickets in advance, refer to the following links below:

The first teaser trailer for The First Omen makes the clever decision to play its scenes in reverse, further signifying this is a prequel. Released on January 3, 2024, the teaser trailer offers a first look at the 1970s Vatican, which doesn't exactly look orthodox. It's abundantly clear that whatever is haunting this church and its denizens is not of this Earth.

The second trailer for The First Omen , released on March 11, 2024 , dives deeper into the dark and twisted story of this dreaded prequel. It also greatly expands on Sister Margaret's role in the story, as she observes the demonic goings-on of the once-holy place. She can't even trust the other members of the clergy in this environment, as one Father Brennan ( Ralph Ineson ) appears to be completely fine with the return of the Antichrist. The reasoning behind this is supposedly because the rise of evil will bring more non-believers to their faith, but that's not an outcome that Margaret is hoping for.

'The Omen' (1976)

We'd be remiss if we didn't praise the original 1976 version of The Omen just a little bit more . Releasing only three years after The Exorcist changed horror films forever, The Omen continues the trend of demonic horror in spectacular fashion. When a string of mysterious deaths become linked to a small child named Damien ( Harvey Stephens ), suspicions arise that he may be the Antichrist that was prophesied in the bible. The Omen , and all of its other sequels, are available to stream on Hulu .

Watch on Hulu

'The Exorcist' (1973)

The late great William Friedkin changed the film industry forever with his horror masterpiece, The Exorcist . Even by today's standards, The Exorcist pushes so many boundaries and takes some unprecedented twists with its dark story and tragic characters, all of which still hold up to this very day. Here, two priests are brought in to investigate the case of Regan MacNeil ( Linda Blair ), who has become possessed by a demonic spirit known only as Pazuzu. The Exorcist is available to stream on The Criterion Channel .

Watch on The Criterion Channel

'Immaculate' (2024)

The latest entry in the long-running nunsploitation genre, Immaculate is one of the most pleasant (or perhaps unpleasant) surprises of 2024 . Similar to The Omen , Immaculate also revolves around the birth of a child and allegations that said child may represent the coming of the Antichrist. Here, a devout nun named Cecilia (Syndey Sweeney) miraculously becomes pregnant despite her abstinence. While some of her peers view this as the second coming of Christ, others see it as the first coming of something much more sinister. Immaculate is in theaters now .

A Virtual Reality Film That Makes the Climate Crisis Feel “Real”

Olivia Black

Adrienne Day

“During one kayaking [trip] around the glacier, ice fell onto my kayak. I tried to save this one piece of glacier ice in my freezer. I watered it every day, trying to make it grow. Turns out I wanted to make a story,” said artist and filmmaker Jiabao Li of time spent in Alaska. Inspired by that trip, Jiabao created Once a Glacier , a 15-minute virtual reality (VR) film about a girl and her relationship with a glacier.

A work of climate fiction, Once a Glacier explores a world similar to our own—one with ice sheets that are disappearing as a casualty of climate change. The film traces the journey of a girl as she watches the glaciers around her slowly vanish. We follow her story, as a young girl who discovers the glacier, to her aging into an elderly woman who still protects the decades-old piece of the glacier in her freezer.

Stillshot of a girl kayaking around a glacier in the VR film ‘Once A Glacier’

Jiabao uses VR technologies to try and cultivate a close connection between the audience and the world she creates. Unlike regular cinema films, VR gives viewers a fully immersive experience that detaches them from their physical surroundings, embedding them in a new world.

“You think of human life within a hundred [years], and glacial time in millions of years,” Jiabao said in an interview with GlacierHub. “Because of that, we can’t [see] glaciers shrinking. Virtual reality compresses time, so within a girl’s lifetime you can see the comparable disappearance of the glacier.”

Researchers agree that VR can be a valuable tool in reaching new audiences. “VR can influence users’ conceptual understanding of scale in a way that looking at things on a computer monitor doesn’t,” said Isabel Cordero , a polar research assistant at the Polar Geophysics and Glaciology group at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. “It’s one thing to tell someone that the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is roughly the same size as Texas; and it’s another thing to show them just how much ice that actually is.”

Cordero, a scientist, has used VR as part of the research group’s Visualizing Ice Sheets in Extended Reality project (VISER). Part of their work includes making virtual models of ice sheets that can help people physically contextualize real-world processes and explore complex polar data sets in an interactive way.

Stillshot of the girl watering the glacial ice in her freezer.

In Once a Glacier, viewers have an opportunity to interact with the main character. For instance, viewers can water the piece of glacial ice in the woman’s fridge. In the end, the audience can virtually follow along as the piece of ice she so fervently cared for is auctioned off into a museum, hailed as the last glacier in the world.

“It’s one thing to tell someone that the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is roughly the same size as Texas; and it’s another thing to show them just how much ice that actually is.” – Isabel Cordero, Polar Geophysics and Glaciology group at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

Sound plays a critical role in the film. In Iñupiaq culture, glaciers carry memory through sound. The Iñupiaq are an Indigenous Peoples found across the Arctic who inspired Jiabao to create the grandmother character in the film, voiced by Carolyn Nahyoumaurak. While Western science focuses on observing the history of glaciers through ice cores (which can reveal past environmental and climate conditions), Jiabao focuses on the ambient sounds of the glaciers to center viewers in the present. In one part of the film, the audience kayaks with the main character through towering glaciers as cracking ice and breaking bubbles follow closely behind. To make the scenes as realistic as possible, her team recorded the sounds from real glaciers in Alaska. Voice acting is also important in the film; poetic narration reflecting the film’s main message.

“I am not alone,” the girl’s voice echoes as a poem is read in the film. “I am the keeper of frozen memory, brimming always, of time that should never end, of blue ice pure to its blue core. I am not alone.”

Science reveals the imminence of climate change, yet we still struggle to pass comprehensive policies and spur action. A new study argues the problem lies not in people’s perceptions of the urgency of climate change, but from a flaw in climate change messaging—we need to show people that “we are not alone.” Empathy is critical here, and VR films, by building close links between the audience and the characters, are one way to connect us with our fellow humans—and by extension our changing planet. Through VR technology, viewers can experience climate change in new ways that hopefully spur them to action.

Thailand has a plan to contain the monkey mayhem in the popular tourist town of Lopburi

Wildlife authorities in Thailand are planning to round up thousands of monkeys that roam the central town of Lopburi, after the animals’ aggressive behavior and attacks on residents and visitors sparked outrage and calls for their removal.

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai wildlife officials laid out a plan on Wednesday to bring peace to a central Thai city after at least a decade of human-monkey conflict.

The macaques that roam Lopburi are a symbol of local culture, and a major tourist draw. But after years of dangerous encounters with residents and visitors and several failed attempts to bring peace with population controls, local people and businesses have had enough.

The monkeys frequently try to snatch food from humans, sometimes resulting in tussles that can leave people with scratches and other injuries. But outrage grew in March when a woman dislocated her knee after a monkey pulled her off her feet in an effort to grab food, and another man was knocked off a motorcycle by a hungry monkey.

Authorities hope to round up some 2,500 urban monkeys and place them in massive enclosures, said Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. They’ll work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay at liberty in the city, he added.

“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters during a news conference in Bangkok.

An official monkey catching campaign was launched week, prioritizing more aggressive alpha males. It has caught 37 monkeys so far, most of whom have been placed put under the care of wildlife authorities in the neighboring province of Saraburi, while others were sent to the Lopburi zoo.

Officials said they plan to capture the rest of the monkeys once the enclosures are complete, especially those in the residential areas. Separate cages will be prepared for different troops of monkeys to prevent them from fighting.

Athapol said he expects the first phase of the operation to start within weeks, and believes the huge cages will be able to contain thousands of them and “will solve the problem very quickly.”

The monkeys are a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers (90 miles) north of Bangkok, where the ancient Three Pagodas temple celebrates an annual “Monkey Buffet” festival, and they’re commonly seen throughout the city. Macaques are classified as a protected species under Thailand’s wildlife conservation law.

Some have blamed the city’s monkey troubles on tourists and residents feeding the animals, which they say drew monkeys into the city and boosted their numbers, as well as getting them accustomed to getting food from humans.

But an earlier effort to limit feeding may have made things worse, some residents say. Local officials began threatening fines for feeding monkeys outside a few designated areas around the main tourist attractions in recent years. But those feeding areas were dominated by a few troops of the highly territorial creatures, while rival bands grew hungry and turned to harassing humans in other areas for food even more.

Athapol said people shouldn’t see monkeys as villians, saying that the authorities might have not been efficient enough in their work to control the simian population.

People also need to adapt to the city’s monkeys, said Phadej Laithong, director of the Wildlife Conservation Office, explaining that a lack of natural food sources prompts the animals to find food wherever they can, including from humans.

Previous control measure have fallen short. From 2014-2023, the wildlife authorities neutered about 2,600 Lopburi monkeys.

Athapol said they are also working in other areas of Thailand that are facing problems with monkeys, such as Prajuab Kiri Khan and Phetchaburi. He said 52 of the country’s 77 provinces report frequent problems from monkeys.

'The First Omen' spoilers! What that fiery ending, teasing coda mean for future movies

the tourist film ending

Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of “The First Omen” (in theaters now), so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.

How does one birth the Antichrist, anyway? The horror prequel “The First Omen” fills in the back story of 1976’s original “Omen" movie, which introduced hell child Damien, though does give him a new family member: a twin sister.

Director/co-writer Arkasha Stevenson’s new “Omen” sets the stage for the original film akin to “Rogue One” leading right into “Star Wars.” While working at a Roman orphanage before becoming a nun circa 1971, American novitiate Margaret (Nell Tiger Free) discovers a heinous conspiracy at play: The youth have ditched the Catholic Church and powerful holy men want to birth the Antichrist as an extreme way to bring believers back.

“Answering the question, ‘Where did Damien come from?’ gave us a great opportunity to put our imprint on the story, then essentially drop viewers off at the beginning of the ’76 film,” says co-writer Tim Smith.

So, yes, Damien is birthed but here’s what else major happens in “The First Omen,” including setting up for a female-centered sequel.

What happens at the end of ‘The First Omen’?

Margaret protects an orphan named Carlita (Nicole Sorace), who’s believed to be the one being groomed to spawn a devilish kid, but Free’s character makes two important discoveries. They’re both children of Satan – as the church has long been trying to birth a male Antichrist – and, worse for Margaret, she learns she's the one who's been impregnated by the devil, which takes the form of a giant jackal in the wild climactic birthing scene. (That’s a nod to the OG “Omen,” where a jackal’s skeleton is found in the grave of Damien’s mother.)

Margaret gives birth to twins, Damien as well as a newborn girl, and the boy is taken away by church members – and ultimately given to ambassador Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) in the beginning of the original "Omen." (A picture of Peck in character is seen in passing near the end of the movie.) But Margaret makes it out, too, with Carlita helping her to escape in the prequel's fiery finale.

That scene took four days to film (one of them being Free's birthday), and “I had to kind of just leave my body a little bit,” Free says. “I was having dental surgery the other day and I just had to pretend I was somewhere else, and it was kind of what I had to do there. Because that's exactly what she would be doing in that moment, when you go through something really traumatizing.”

For Stevenson, it’s a moment that ties back to Margaret’s heavenly entrance in the film before her epic descent: In the opening, “she starts coming up the stairs, rising into bold light and everything's beautiful and colorful, and she's just this fresh-faced novitiate. And then at the end is quite literally in hell strapped to a bed getting tortured.”

Is that the most bananas part of the ‘Omen’ prequel?

Surprisingly, no. Stevenson includes a graphic bit early in the movie where a woman gives birth to a demon, with a full-frontal shot of a vagina, and even that is not “the most confronting shot in the movie,” the director admits. Instead, that superlative goes to an homage to the 1981 thriller “Possession,” in which a pregnant Margaret spasms and lets out primal grunts and screams as the thing inside her begins to take over. It’s meant to symbolize “this concept of losing control over your body and your body not belonging to you anymore, and you wanting desperately to grab onto every physical function you have,” Stevenson says.

Her direction to Free for that scene came in a last-minute whisper in the actress’ ear: “Scare the s--- out of them, Nell.” A crew-member friend approached her and "he was like, ‘Ciao, Nell, can I get you a cup of tea?’ He looked at me and went, ‘I’ll come back later,’ ” Free says, laughing. “We had a couple people walk off set while we did it. People were crossing themselves. It was great.”

Does ‘First Omen’ have a post-credit scene?

Nope! However, there is a coda that both ties to the earlier "Omen" films and potentially sets up a future installment: Just before the credits roll, Margaret and Carlita are shown in a remote cabin with the little girl, now seemingly a few years old. Father Brennan shows up at their door, as Margaret greets him with a shotgun, and he comes bearing ominous news about the Antichrist: “They’ve given it a name. Damien.”

Free calls it “such a cool moment,” and one that opens the door to a sequel featuring the female characters that parallels the Damien movies. “All three of those girls are half jackal: They have the devil in them,” Stevenson adds. “But they've isolated themselves to try and heal from that trauma altogether. So it is really exciting to think about what happens when they emerge from that cabin eventually. I would love to continue exploring that story.”

Her star is also game: “Listen, I love this franchise," Free says. "As long as there's stories to tell in this universe, I'll be there with bells on if they need me.”
