The Walkmen Announce UK Live Return With Two London Shows in Summer 2023

the walkmen tour uk

The Walkmen announce UK live return with two London shows in late Summer 2023!

In November last year  The Walkmen  caused a stir with the announcement that they would be reuniting for the first time in a decade. The band initially announced they’d play a series of five shows at Manhattan’s Webster Hall, all of which sold out immediately, before announcing additional dates in Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington DC, performing across a number of nights in each city.

Now, in further exciting news, The Walkmen have announced their UK live return. Hamilton Leithauser and co will be visiting these shores for two special headline shows at London’s  KOKO  on the 29th and 30th August. The presale starts Tuesday 31st January at 10am GMT with the general on-sale following a week today on Friday 3rd February. Upcoming live info below…

Wednesday, August 30 – London, UK – KOKO  tickets

To accompany the announcement of their original run of shows in NYC this April, The Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser wrote: “ Back in 2013, an unnamed Walkmen band member (Peter Bauer) announced to the Washington Post that we were going on an ‘extreme hiatus.’ I assumed that meant there would be a lot of monster energy drinks and maybe that red-headed snowboarder guy would be hanging around a lot…but none of that actually happened. Instead, in the ensuing years, we’ve all worked on a ton of different projects in a ton of different places. Recently, someone sent us a clip of us playing at Irving Plaza from 2003, and it just looked very exciting. So, we’ve decided we’d like to play together again. Right now, we are very thrilled to announce that we will be playing at Webster Hall in 2023. See you soon.”

The Walkmen emerged at the turn of the century as major players in the New York City circle of post punk / new wave-inspired bands (including Interpol, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others). Setting The Walkmen apart from the outset was a heavy reliance on piano and organ, and a preference for atmospherics over garagey antics. The band already had two acclaimed albums under their belt when 2004’s  Bows + Arrows  broke big and made them music magazine cover stars. Subsequent work cemented their appeal and commercial success, cresting with rave reviews and Top 40 appearances for 2010’s  Lisbon  and 2012’s  Heaven . “Awash with lyricism… Poignant tales set to rich, hauntingly romantic melodies” said MOJO magazine of  Lisbon , while The Times stated that “ Heaven  is a career high that should see them billed alongside Fleet Foxes or The National… Their stately progression towards brilliance continues”. The Walkmen then went on hiatus, with three of the four members beginning solo careers.

The Walkmen

The walkmen @ project house, leeds, uk, august 22, 2023,.

When looking back at music that shaped the 21st century, one band whose name deserves a mention are The Walkmen . Having formed in 2000 out the ashes of seminal post-punk quintet Jonathan Fire*Eater and perhaps lesser known outfit The Recoys, the (then) Washington DC based five-piece went on to release six critically acclaimed albums over a thirteen-year period that established them as one of the most consistent musical forces from that era. As with all good things, The Walkmen story seemingly came to an end as 2013 drew to a close having embarked on another successful tour for sixth and final long player Heaven .

the walkmen tour uk

One of the many facets that set The Walkmen apart from many of their contemporaries was the seemingly innocuous panache they had to deliver the unexpected at any given time. Never constrained by style or genre, The Walkmen’s sound as such could never be defined or pigeonholed into any one, specific compartment. Yet at the same time their music always was instantly recognisable as being that of The Walkmen. So, when the band announced last December they’d be reuniting for some shows in 2023, it’s probably fair to say a lot of people jumped for joy at the prospect of seeing a band many thought would never share a stage again.

the walkmen tour uk

While 2004’s Bows & Arrows arguably remains their most popular record, probably due in no small part to it featuring “The Rat”, undoubtedly The Walkmen’s best known song. Every record that followed heralded a new side to the band’s make-up, each one taking them to places they’d never been before. Indeed, if anyone reading this is unfamiliar with The Walkmen’s output I’d probably urge them to start from the end (2012’s Heaven ) and work backwards, such are the rich endeavours of the band’s later works. But that’s just me, yet is also hugely indicative of a band whose fanbase represents so many different eras. Indeed, stand ten Walkmen fans in line and ask them for their favourite song and album and you’ll most likely hear ten different answers (as we did this evening when the band politely asked for audience requests rather than sticking to the pre-planned encore choices but more of that later).

the walkmen tour uk

So, here we are in Leeds (eventually after a tortuous three-and-a-half hours drive full of road closures and diversions that cause us to miss the support act, Roddy Woomble’s Almost Nothing) at the city’s newest music venue, Project House . A collaborative venture between some of the city’s most established independent promoters, Project House is situated in a former tile warehouse in the Armley Road district and is eerily reminiscent of many warehouse spaces that emerged during the 1980s as dance and rave culture took over the underground then the mainstream. It’s also one of the most customer friendly spaces Under the Radar has visited in recent months, its wide open spaces making access and vantage points amenable from every angle.

the walkmen tour uk

Having played a number of shows and festivals already this year including Green Man in the Welsh Brecon Beacons, tonight represents The Walkmen’s first show in a UK club venue for over a decade, and with a back catalogue of so many riches to choose from, we’re spoiled from the outset. Opening with a trio of songs off 2010’s fourth long player You & Me, released on UK independent Fierce Panda whose head honcho Simon Williams is also in attendance this evening. It feels like the calm before the storm as a soothing “Donde Esta La Playa” builds and grows before erupting into a furious “On The Water” and anthemic “In The New Year”, vocalist Hamilton Leithauser removing his jacket almost to signal the party having started.

the walkmen tour uk

Backed by guitarist Paul Maroon, bass player/keyboard player/multi-instrumentalists Walter Martin and Peter Bauer plus drummer Matt Garrick, it feels like they’ve never been away such are the taut deliveries of each and every song. Rather than play a chronologically arranged set, tonight’s show provides a career spanning showcase of The Walkmen’s finest compositions. Whether it be “Juveniles” or “Woe Is Me” off 2010’s Lisbon or “All Hands And The Cook” off 2006’s understated third record A Hundred Miles Off . Every song here hits the spot, and some.

the walkmen tour uk

Unsurprisingly, the double whammy of “The Rat” and “Little House Of Savages” towards the back end of the set receives rapturous applause, as does Leithauser’s story about the time they played The Cockpit in Leeds and encountered “the worst sound engineer in history!” Closing the main set on “Heaven”, the title track and only song played off their last album. Leithauser then invites the audience to request what they want to hear in the encore, ditching “I Lost You” from the setlist for a heartfelt rendition of “Louisiana”, the opener off the aforementioned A Hundred Miles Off .

the walkmen tour uk

Ending on a triumphant “We’ve Been Had”, the first song the band ever wrote together. Leithauser then makes his way to the barrier to shake hands with all and sundry while the band play out its final notes. If anything, tonight felt like a celebration, a moment to cherish. Let’s hope there’s more shows to savour, even if new material seems unlikely at present.

The Walkmen Extend 2023 Reunion Tour

By Matthew Strauss

The Walkmen

The Walkmen finally reunited last month for a performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert before playing a concert in Rhode Island and several at New York’s Webster Hall . They’re still on tour , and they’ll stay on tour for the foreseeable future, as they’ve announced more shows for September and October. Find the Walkmen’s tour dates below.

In a statement to go with the announcement of the new concerts, the Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer said:

The last few weeks have been an absolute blast. Honestly, when we decided to get back together to play these shows, we had no idea if anyone would even show up. It’s been an incredible joy seeing all these people out there, playing these shows, getting to run into old friends from all over the world. There was a review of our first show back that said something really nice—that it felt like “time was bending back on itself.” It really has and it’s been the strangest feeling. We all flew to New York, had dinner at Hamilton [Leithauser] ’s house with his family and actually did not practice as promised. The next day we played the Stephen Colbert show live on television. I think each of us hold on to playing Letterman as a very important memory. So, to be back at the Ed Sullivan Theater and be playing this song for the first time in ten years with your friends was like an out of body experience. We are just getting going and I’m not really sure we want it to end. I will say, after being the dummy who I guess broke the band up last time saying something about an “ extreme hiatus ,” I’m going to avoid saying anything like that again. I will say, what makes it all special is when you don’t know what’s going to happen next and when you can actually wonder if this is the last time you’re ever going to get the chance to do this. Everything feels ragged and lively which is what all of us thought was good about the band in the first place. So, I don’t know what happens next but I do know these shows are just about the end of what’s happening now. We are headed west across the USA this fall. We’ll go all the way to California and the Pacific Northwest and play cities we haven’t in many years ultimately ending back east. Also, there’s still some tickets available for our UK run, so check the site and grab. We’ve got maybe one or two more in us to announce in the coming weeks. But that is it (I guess?).

Glastonbury 2024 ticket resale: When is it and other ways to get festival tickets

If you missed out on tickets during November’s general sale for Glastonbury 2024, fear not, because there is still a chance to secure a ticket via resale.

Dua Lipa , Coldplay and SZA are headlining at Worthy Farm this year, with country-pop legend Shania Twain taking the Legends’ slot.

The line-up poster also reveals that LCD Soundsystem, Little Simz, Cyndi Lauper, and Janelle Monae are set to play the Pyramid Stage in the afternoon and evening slots, while other artists to take the main stage include Burna Boy, PJ Harvey, Michael Kiwanuka, and Paloma Faith .

General sale tickets for the annual event, which takes place at Worthy Farm in Somerset between 26 and 30 June, sold out within an hour when they were released in November last year.

But there’s still time to secure your spot. Glastonbury has confirmed the dates for its annual resale and there are two to mark in your diary.

On Thursday 18 April at 6pm BST, the ticket and coach package option will go on resale. On Sunday 21 April at 9am BST, the remaining general admission tickets will be up for grabs.

The number of tickets that are made available depends on how many people did not pay the full amount after putting down their deposits in November.

Last year, resale tickets sold out in seven minutes, so you need to make sure you’re organised in advance – and that includes being registered.

Glastonbury organisers urge fans to purchase tickets only through official festival channels to avoid scams or unexpected charges.

If you manage to bag yourself resale tickets, you must pay for them in full at the point of booking: £355 plus a £5 booking fee for standard tickets.

Besides the general resale, another great way to get into Glastonbury is by volunteering. Registration to volunteer for charities WaterAid and Oxfam have closed, but spaces do occasionally become available if people drop out.

Registration is still open to volunteer with Greenpeace: anyone who is selected will be granted free entry to the festival and three meals a day. In return, you are expected to work a minimum of five eight-hour shifts during the festival between 25 June and 1 July.
