Pelagian Islands: Lampedusa e Linosa

If you are looking for a little-known Sicily that will enchant you with its exotic charm, then the Pelagie Islands are the perfect destination for your next trip.

They are the southernmost point in Italy. Lampedusa is the most southerly island, and its sea is among the most transparent in the world. Linosa lies halfway between the Sicilian and African coasts. Both islands have secret bays and a lush hinterland. They are simply stunning.

Here are 10 tips to fully enjoy their untamed beauty!

  • Conquering the islands … by sea

The Pelagie archipelago comprises 5 islands and islets. Lampedusa and Linosa are the inhabited islands. Isola dei Conigli, Lampione and Scoglio di Sacramento are popular destinations for exciting excursions.

You can reach many Lampedusa beaches by land. But if you want to visit the exclusive bays, you can only arrive from the sea . Especially in Linosa , it is better to make excursions by boat , to enjoy its crystal clear sea.

  • Diving and snorkelling

We are in the Caribbean of Europe. The impassable, black beaches of Lampedusa and Linosa have a green sea where you can dive and discover the seabed . Diving and snorkelling enthusiasts will bebthrilled!

Piscina Naturale, Linosa - Ph Mannarano

  • Lampione, the stone thrown by the Cyclops

The islet of Lampion e is uninhabited. The only trace of humans is an automatic lighthouse . We can reach it from the small mooring, suitable only for small boats, and through a solitary path. We are in a land that doesn’t seem to have any history, but it is legendary. The myth tells that Lampione is a rock thrown from the hands of a Cyclops.

  • Porto Vecchio in Lampedusa

Once we have landed on the island of Lampedusa , we head to Porto Vecchio and the exotic beach of Cala Palme . Here we can enjoy the view of the typical island dwellings that offer frames of everyday life. The Lungomare Luigi Rizzo is the best place to watch the fishermen working and enjoy a good fish meal in one of the delightful trattorias. Here we find everything we need: tourist accommodation, rental of vehicles, cars, bicycles, electric or petrol scooters.

  • A tour of Lampedusa by ” Spiaggina”

Hiring a vehicle is essential for exploring Lampedusa . This island reveals itself to be both rugged and wonderful at first glance. If we are looking for tranquillity, we will find places with surreal peace and silence. Let’s reach them on board a “ spiaggina “! The Mehari is the iconic car of this place. Otherwise, we can hire an electric scooter or a quad bike.

We should take some time to enjoy a tour of the town centre and watch the different styles all mingled together. The island atmosphere is highly sophisticated in its use of light and colour.

  • Bays in Lampedusa

If we are looking for an equipped beach, suitable for families with children, let’s go to Cala Croce. Cala Guitgia, Cala Pulcino, Cala Pisana , are beaches that can be easily reached on foot. Let’s not miss Cala Creta : its panorama takes your breath away. And let’s also visit Cala Pozzolana, the Conte beach and the Piscine beach , where we can dive into the natural pools dug out of the lava rock.

Cala Pulcino, Lampedusa - Ph Mannarano

Cala Pulcino, Lampedusa – Ph Mannarano

Finally, at Baia dei Conigli , we won’t find rabbits but simply the most beautiful beach in the world .

  • Linosa, a timeless island

Unlike Lampedusa, which is vibrant and lively, Linosa keeps a lower profile. It is the perfect place for those who prefer to avoid crowds and want to lose touch with reality . Two days are enough to discover the whole Island and enjoy all the activities it has to offer.

Let’s relax in the sun, swim in its emerald lava pools and eat great food in the local restaurants. That’s how we can spend all our time. On Linosa, time seems not to exist .

  • Linosa by bicycle

A gentle breeze blows all year round on its coastline. Linosa la ventosa (the windy island ) is a volcanic island with an area of only 5 km. It lies halfway between Sicily and Tunisia.

Because of its size, a bicycle is the perfect means of transport for visiting the whole island . You can rent one at the port or online. We ride along the roads from the town centre to reach the main beaches and points of interest.

  • Bays in Linosa

On Linosa , the only tongue of sand on the entire island is Cala Pozzalana di Ponente . It is set between high rocky walls and offers a breathtaking view. Don’t forget to visit Cala Pozzalana di Levante as well.

Cala a Linosa

In front of the headland of Punta Beppe Tuccio is a lagoon with a few islets: admiring this landscape is a real feast for the eyes. Sicchitella , at Punta Calcarella , is a diver’s paradise and one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean.

  • Tasting the Pelagie Islands

These islands are beautiful and have plenty of delicious, typical dishes. Thanks to their particular geological conformation, they offer a kind of biodiversity unique in the world.

On Lampedusa and Linosa , fine wines await us to accompany the typical seafood cuisine . Especially on Lampedusa, always ask for the catch of the day .

The cultivation of capers and lentils is very famous.

In the lava soil of Linosa, there are many prickly pear plants . From them, the locals produce liqueur and the traditional granita .

Lampedusa and Linosa – Marine Reserves

Lampedusa and linosa are the most beautiful marine reserves amongst the minor sicilian islands, lampedusa and linosa marine reserves of agrigento.

Many choose to spend a few days of their vacation at Lampedusa for its crystal-clear waters. But, besides being very beautiful, the Pelagian Isles are also the most southerly Marine Reserves of the province of Agrigento and indeed of Italy and the European continent. The archipelago composed of Lampedusa and Linosa represents the natural and geological intersection of two continents: Africa and Europe. The island of Lampedusa is of limestone and therefore white, as the Isola dei Conigli, one of the most beautiful beaches of the world. Linosa, in stark contrast, is of volcanic origin and therefore as black as a black pearl with many marvelous coves and rocks. The nature reserve of Lampedusa, established by the Sicilian regional government in 1995 and managed by the Legambiente Sicilia, covers about 320 hectares of the southern coast of the island and stretches from Vallone dell’Acqua to Cala Greca, including Isola dei Conigli. It protects a natural heritage of great value which is distinguished by rare species and habitats at risk of extinction. The flora in the nature reserve is composed of species typical of Mediterranean marine scrub such as Euforbia, Lentisco, Pino d’Aleppo as well as plants typically found on the African continent such as Centaura Acaulis. Birdlife is very rich too and rare species such as Marangone dal Ciuffo, Falco della Regina,  Colubro Lacertino, Colubro del Cappuccino, Berta Minore and Berta Maggiore may be spotted.

The nature reserve of Linosa and Lampione includes, as the name suggests, the uninhabited and distant Isle of Lampione, territory of many rare species of fish and sharks such as the Squalo Toro and the Squalo Grigio. Linosa represents an extraordinary habitat both inland, with its extinct craters Monte Rosso, Monte Nero and Monte Volcano, and in its coastal waters which are richly populated by fish, starfish, sea cucumbers, sponges and sea urchins. The nature reserve was established by the Sicilian regional government in 2000 with the aim of protecting the rich flora composed of musks, lichens and rock vegetation and the varied fauna, in particular large colonies of Berta Maggiore, a bird which lives in and on the water and comes inland only to reproduce and breed. Be sure not to miss the spectacle of the infinite flocks of birds which settle on the coastal waters at sunset as the water assumes a variety of colours from red to gold. These islands are connected to the Sicilian ‘mainland’ by ship andby hovercraft both leaving from the harbour of Porto Empedocle.

Linosa, the island of the wind: what to do and see | Sicily

tour lampedusa linosa

All you need to know about what to do, what to see, what to eat and where to sleep in Linosa, a minor island in Sicily.

Small, picturesque and wild, the island of Linosa stands out in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and, together with Lampedusa and Lampione, completes the Pelagie archipelago.

Of volcanic conformation, with three internal craters and cliffs overlooking an intense blue sea, the island of Linosa extends for more than 5 sq km and is exactly equidistant from both the Sicilian and African coasts of Tunisia.

Island of Linosa, what to do and see - Sicily

I had the pleasure of discovering the island of Linosa during my itinerary #A HugOfSicily in which, for this stage, I collaborated with the Hotel Pelaghea and with Errera restaurant , and now I tell you about it.

GO TO THE SECTION:

HOW TO GET TO LINOSA

The island of Linosa is 42 kilometers from Lampedusa and the only way to reach it is by sea. The hydrofoils of Liberty Lines make direct and daily connections from both Lampedusa and Porto Empedocle ( Agrigento ).

WHERE TO SLEEP IN LINOSA: Find offers

The standard cost of the Lampedusa-Linosa one-way ticket is around 30 euros and the duration of the journey is 60 minutes.

tour lampedusa linosa

Attention! The connections to Linosa are always guaranteed in optimal climatic conditions. This means that it often happens that the wind and the very strong sea force the hydrofoils to remain stationary in Lampedusa.

WHAT TO DO AND SEE ON THE ISLAND OF LINOSA

The island of Linosa is not large and, if you don't have much time available, you could absolutely think about organizing a day trip directly from Lampedusa. The advice is, however, to be able to spend a few nights there, either just to enjoy a land that seems truly timeless.

I leave you the list of "things to do and see on the island of Linosa", at least in my opinion!

The excursion by sea is among the most popular on the island of Linosa because it allows you to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible and, at the same time, to realize how geologically different this patch of land is from nearby Lampedusa.

The boat tours start at the small port of Linosa and last about 2 hours, with some stops for swimming.

Natural swimming pool

Located in the north-eastern tip, the Natural Pool is one of the most evocative places in Linosa. It is a body of sea water set in an expanse of black lava, a stone's throw from the sea.

In the Natural Pool it is possible to swim.

Tour among the colorful houses of the village

The center of Linosa is paved with narrow streets and pastel-coloured houses which seem to be surrounded by an aura of well-being and peace. Silence reigns supreme among the narrow and picturesque lanes of the island, studded with gates of the most varied colours.

Excursion in the Fossa del Cappellano and in the craters

Unlike Lampedusa, which is extremely flat, the island of Linosa has a volcanic conformation and is characterized by various craters. At the center of the island stands the main one, Fossa del Cappellano, with its 600 meters in diameter. On the sides there are instead Monte Vulcano, Monte Rosso, Monte Nero and another small crater of only 50 meters wide.

Pozzolana di Ponente (Turtle Beach)

The Pelagie Islands are among the few Italian lands chosen by the Caretta Caretta turtles, an endangered species, to lay their eggs. On the Pozzolana beach in Ponente di Linosa there are delimited areas that indicate exactly the place where the turtles leave their eggs and then return to the sea.

Lunch with fish, capers and sea view

Among the best things to do and see in Linosa certainly cannot miss the food and wine experience. Among the best traditional dishes those based on fish and capers stand out, the true excellence of this island.

Preserved from the negative environmental changes.

tour lampedusa linosa

With a history that dates back to the Greeks and Romans, Lampedusa is today best known for its glorious sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The best beaches are at Cala Mulak, Cala Galera or Spiaggia della Guitgia where the colour of the water ranges from a translucent turquoise to inky blue. Not surprisingly, the island is popular with divers and there are several local diving schools. The most popular attraction on the islands is turtle watching on the Isola dei Conigli (Rabbit Island), a nature reserve frequented by loggerhead sea turtles who lay their eggs there at night. Nightlife is focused around Lampedusa town which has a good selection of restaurants serving a menu based on local sea food and dishes that have a distinctly Arabic flavour. Boat tours, bike and scooter hire can all be arranged in the port. Lampedusa is the only one of the three Pelagie islands with an airport, with direct flights from Palermo, and during summer, from Rome and Milan. Ferry travel is also available, from Porto Empedocle near Agrigento.

Discover Lampedusa island

With its smaller sister linosa, visiting lampedusa and linosa.

The spell-binding islands of Lampedusa and Linosa are part of the Pelagian Islands, a small archipelago situated south of Sicily. In fact, this island group is renowned for its close proximity to Africa and despite its Italian heritage, the North African influence can be seen and felt in the architecture, cuisine and the very atmosphere. This combination of cultures has created a pair of exotic and enticing destinations, floating serenely in the heavenly blue of the Mediterranean Sea.

These two islands offer a a tranquil holiday of pure isolation out of season, but during the summer season of May through to September, an influx of visitors make the journey to the islands for the shimmering, pure white shores; vivid jewel-toned seas and scorching temperatures. However, it is only during the heights of the season in July and August that these islands get crowded – visit outside these times if you really want to experience a quieter version of paradise.

Just 3 kilometres (about 2 miles) wide and 12 kilometres (about 7 miles) long, Lampedusa may be small in size but it more than makes up for its stature in charm. The natural beauty of this island is famous throughout Sicily and Italy alike – the soft, white sands and azure waters would not look out of place in the Caribbean. Swimming, sunbathing and exploring gentle nature trails are the key activities on beautiful Lampedusa.

Paradise beaches

There are a variety of glorious beaches, ranging from the famous, touristy beaches to hidden coves, known only by locals. Hiring a scooter makes for an excellent way to explore the island on your own timetable and discover secret beaches on your own. Most of the bays offer great swimming with gentle waves, suitable for snorkelling and families with young children. Alternatively, organise a trip to the nearby I’Isolotto dei Conigli, the famous ‘Island of the Rabbits’. Although only a few of these furry creatures reside there now, this stunning island is notorious for its mesmerising beaches – ideal for a day trip and a picnic lunch. Visit during the week to enjoy the island enveloped in solitude.

Dive into an underwater kingdom

Diving in the sea surrounding Lampedusa is an experience not to be missed. The crystalline waters are rich in a variety of marine life and there are dive shops on the island where you can rent equipment or hire instructors. Look out for the caretta turtles that visit the area to lay their eggs in a protected bay.

Seafood delights

In terms of cuisine, foodies will find themselves in seafood heaven on Lampedusa’s shores. The island often plays host to Italy’s largest fishing fleet, based at Mazzara del Vallo on the Sicilian mainland. In fact, the island has a long history with denizens of the sea – Lampedusa was once a notorious pirate haunt. As with any of the islands in this region, the seafood is exquisite and super fresh. Enjoy spicy stews, succulent fish and a variety of Sicilian specialities which pull together influences from North Africa, Greece and Spain, thanks to the various invaders who have conquered Sicily over the years.

Tiny Linosa is only around 5 kilometres square, but this little island boasts unparalleled volcanic scenery and glittering unspoilt waters which makes it a tempting destination for a day trip. With only 200 permanent inhabitants residing in African-inspired, brightly coloured homes, this tranquil destination offers holiday-makers the chance to hike and dive to their heart’s content. With an intriguing landscape that includes three extinct volcanic cones and sweeping black sand beaches, Linosa is a destination rich in natural beauty and wonder.

Wildlife spotting

Linosa’s reputation for excellent diving might even surpass Lampedusa. This is due to the sharp drops in depth that occur just a short distance from the shore. Although there is a large variety of marine life to be seen around Linosa, many visitors come for the endangered caretta turtles that lay their eggs at the black sand beach of Gaia Pozzolana di Ponente. As well as the aquatic action afforded by Linosa’s waters, the island itself is home to a rich range of wildlife from scuttling lizards to singing sea birds.

Boat trips

Sailing along the turquoise waters that encircle Linosa is an experience not to be missed. Offering captivating views of Linosa’s unique coastline and the sublime waters that lap the rocky coves and beaches, a sailing excursion is the best way to see sights such as the Grotta del Greco (the Greek Cave) and the charming turtle beaches on the south coast. One of the highlights is a small, emerald lagoon, situated near the lighthouse on the Punt Beppe Tuccio promontory.

Lampedusa, the largest of the three Pelagic Islands (the others are Linosa and Lampione), lies about 200km south of Sicily, closer to Tunisia than Italy. Surrounded by stunning aquamarine waters, with its south shore protected as a marine reserve, it's a popular summer holiday destination whose year-round population of 6300 more than trebles in summertime. In winter transport connections are cut back and almost every hotel and restaurant shuts down.

The Pelagie Islands: Lampedusa, Linosa and the other gems of the Mediterranean

lampedusa and flax

Approximately 50 km from each other and over 200 km from the southern coast of Sicily, the Pelagie Islands are the last frontier between Europe and Africa: Lampedusa and Linosa, with villages and cliffs, stacks and seabeds to explore, are the last gems of the Italian Mediterranean treasure chest, then we move on to another continent.

Little spoiler: actually the Pelagie Islands are 5 but we'll talk about that shortly...

In both islands you will find historic centers and wonderful beaches, you can taste typical recipes prepared with fresh fish and you will fully experience the unique atmosphere of an island within an island, surrounded by crystal clear waters that have few equals in the world, enjoying the warm welcome of which only the Sicilians are capable. The extra tip? Discover a new point of view by booking a boat trip to admire the islands from the sea.

Forget the daily routine: Lampedusa and Linosa await you!

Lampedusa between village and nature

Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands , with an area of about 25 square km and is populated by 5.000 people, moreover Lampidusa, as its inhabitants call it, is the closest to Africa between the islands of the archipelago. Together with the municipality of Linosa, the two islands form a single municipality in the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento .

The inhabited center winds through streets and alleys around the Porto Vecchio , in the inlet south of Salt Point . Here are several places to enjoy the typical dishes of the island , such as spaghetti with bottarga or the fresh prawn and mint salad. The tourist attractions are divided between the Salina beach and Piazza Garibaldi, from the Scala Colorata to Via Roma, the largest street in the center.

If you leave the country, along the coast you will find some of the most beautiful bays in the entire world, from the spectacular Cala Guitgia a Cala Maluk , from Caves a Sciatu Peru , there are countless dream bays on Lampedusa. Even in the northern part of the island, there are beautiful attractions such as the Giant Bench overlooking the Mediterranean Sea or the Grande Dammuso Casa Teresa in the western area. One of the most famous destinations of Lampedusa is undoubtedly the Tabaccara bay , where you will never get tired of bathing.

Linosa, where to go and what to see

Linosa measures only 5 square km, but it is still the second largest island of the Pelagie Archipelago. Here, right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, stands the volcanic island with deep waters and peaks that reach 195 meters above sea level

Naturally, nature is the main attraction sought by those arriving in Linosa: the Pit of the Chaplain , with its 600 meters in diameter, is the largest crater on the island. However, Linosa certainly does not lack history, in fact the Romans passed through here at the time of the Punic wars, as evidenced by the approximately 150 cisterns for collecting water that the ancient conquerors left on the island.

Today the inhabited center is famous for its colorful houses , which visitors can admire with a pleasant walk in the village, concentrated along the southern coast of the island. The other attractions of Linosa are the marina, the Punta Arena Bianca beach , Pozzolana di Ponente and Natural pools . Visit the Sanctuary of the Madonnina della Stella Maris and Mannarazza pier , before setting out to discover the other Pelagie Islands.

The other Pelagie Islands, between beauty and curiosity

As many will already know, the Pelagie Islands are 5 in total: in addition to Lampedusa and Linosa , are part of it, in fact, too Street lamp , Rabbit Island and Rock of the Sacrament .

The two main islands, as we have seen, are inhabited, while the others are pristine natural beauties, where it is possible to stroll undisturbed in the Sicilian Eden.

In Lampione, following the path that leads to the lighthouse, it will be possible to reach the only building on the island, while Isola dei Conigli is so small that it can be seen at a single glance, but large enough to constitute a protected nature reserve and so fascinating enough to win the title of the most beautiful beach in the world, in the ranking drawn up by tourists from all over the world on Tripadvisor. The Scoglio del Sacramento is the wonderful stack that rises in front of the intense blue of the Mediterranean Sea Madonnina di Lampedusa beach .

These islands located in the center of the Mediterranean tell many stories, including those of their roots: formerly Europe, but still Africa, the Pelagie Islands geologically belong to the plate of the African continent, except Linosa, of volcanic origin.

How to get to Lampedusa and Linosa

Lampedusa and Linosa form a municipality of the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento. To visit the Pelagie Islands Archipelago, we advise you to to stay in Lampedusa and then reach the other islands on a boat , with the ferry or with the hydrofoil .

Lampedusa can be reached from Porto Empedocle by ferry, for a journey lasting 8 hours.

Beaches in Lampedusa

Lampedusa is certainly famous for its dreamy beaches. On the island, you can find both equipped beaches and free areas , as well as wilder coves accessible by sea.

Talking about all of them would be a feat, but here are 7 beautiful beaches in Lampedusa not to be missed:

  • Cala Guitgia : very close to the town center, it is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches in Lampedusa. It boasts fine white sand, aquamarine waters and is one of the best equipped beaches on the island, perfect for families with children. You can reach it easily on foot or by car with no parking issues.
  • Cala Creta : located on the eastern part of the island, this is a rocky cove perfect for snorkeling. To reach it, you’ll have to walk down a dirt road and a small descent, while access to the water is provided by some stone steps. If you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins jumping out of the water in the early morning.
  • Mare Morto : located northeast of the town, it lies in a rocky cove with fascinating cliffs and caves. Its waters are always calm, hence the name. This beach is located within the Marine Protected Area, so get ready to admire unique underwater landscapes and brightly colored fish.
  • Cala Pulcino : considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, it is a cove consisting mostly of pebbles. The seabed is sandy and ideal for diving. To reach it, just follow the signs for Cala Teresa, reach the parking area and walk a scenic path for about 30 minutes.
  • Cala Pisana : close to the town center, it’s popular with islanders and easily accessible. Perfect for diving, its waters resemble those of a swimming pool. The cove is divided between a small beach and a paved area, and there are umbrella rental services as well as a small kiosk.
  • Cala Uccello : located on the east coast, it is mostly chosen by those seeking a peaceful environment. The beach is about 200 m long and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Some bird-shaped rocks and beautiful natural caves can be found here. This cove is also famous for the sea turtles that swim in its waters.
  • Conigli : known as one of Italy's most beautiful beaches , this is a long stretch of pristine white sand wrapped in unspoiled territory. The white cliffs, turquoise waters and surrounding landscape make it unique in the world. It's no wonder that caretta-caretta turtles lay their eggs here. The beach is 3 km from the center of Lampedusa and can be reached on foot via the Capo Ponente trail.

Useful info : being part of a protected area, access to Conigli Beach is limited to a certain number of people per day and requires free online reservations.

Nightlife in Lampedusa

We also recommend heading to the north of the island to enjoy a fantastic sunset aperitif at Fuori Rotta or O'Scià Club. Another option is the Sprizzando mobile bar, which sets up daily from May to September in the parking lot of Albero Sole, Lampedusa's highest point.

Food in Lampedusa

Lampedusa's cuisine has multicultural origins and largely echoes Sicilian traditions. The star of the table is definitely fish , served in a variety of ways.

SICILY ON WEB

The sicilian blog about sicily, linosa, a small oasis amid the sea.

Linosa

Linosa is a wonderful and still untouched island with a likewise untouched landscape and a turquoise sea. This place is also considered the best alternative to Lampedusa, by now made unattractive by the massive arrivals of refugees. In this post, I discussed just about the island of Linosa. In the following  paragraphs, you’ll discover where is it and how to get there.

Where is Linosa?

Linosa  is in Italy , in the North East of Lampedusa. The two islands belong to Sicily, because they  form  two municipalities of the city of Agrigento. Along with Lampedusa  and  Lampione, Linosa also forms one the most beautiful places of Sicily, namely the picturesque Pelagian Archipelago, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, between  the coasts of Sicily and Tunisia. Linosa has a volcanic origin, is smaller than Lampedusa and is just 195 meters above the sea level.

Linosa house

This island has less than 450 inhabitants . Its landscape is quiet, unreal, uninhabited, sometimes it resembles a daydream and lets you to enjoy all of the natural landscape of Sicily. You must know that until a few years ago, Linosa didn’t have potable water and electricity and you couldn’t even use the TV. Nowadays, this small angle of Sicilian paradise is a perfect tourist destination to enjoy a relaxing and unforgettable vacation. The island stretches for only five kms, like an oasis amid the sea. That is, hence, an easy destination to explore and visit  in a few days.

History of the foundation of Linosa

The island of Linosa has had different names over the centuries.  Since the age of The Old Plinio, there was the name Aethusa that indicated a volcanic island in the strait of Sicily. Afterward, the name became Lenusa and then, Larniusa and finally Linosa. Due to the shortage of archeological diggings, the history of Linosa is still unknown. It is only known that the island has been dominated by several civilizations,  also by the Romans . Their  presence is proved by Roman  150 basins  dug into the lava surface. After the Romans , it was  the turn of the  Phoenicians, Arabs and Saracens. Since then, the island has remained uninhabited  and used like a port by the pirates of the Mediterranean sea. It was colonized only in  1839 by the Borbonic government.

At that time, Linosa was a desert and wild wood . To repopulate it, the reign of Sicily issued an announcement that invited  families to relocate to the island, giving them a land to grow and an income for fifthy years.  Those who joined to this invitation were a group of people coming from Ustica, Agrigento and Pantelleria .  Accompanied by  the frigate captain  Sansivente, they landed  in Linosa, by boat, on April, 25 1845. Hence, every year, this date, it is the day of the foundation of this marvelous place.

What to do and see in Linosa

Linosa Faraglioni

Thanks to  the volcanic origin, the island of Linosa has high rocky cliffs  shaped by the wind and the waters, with a depth  of 1500 meters. They are suitable for trekking and to undertake exciting excursions . They resemble  mountains  overlooking the sea and taking wonderful and picturesque colours. These rocky cliffs are also called The Faraglioni of Linosa (see the image), the brightest symbol of the beauty of the island and one the main tourist attractions to see. Surrounded by these black cliffs and with a blue and crystal sea, Linosa has simultaneously a mesmerizing and disquieting look. From a side, there are extinct   volcanoes, with their dark landscape, and from another side, a glimmering sea. Surrounded by volcanoes and jagged cliffs, Linosa is also suitable for scuba diving . Rather, it is regarded as the true paradise  to dive into its wonderful waters.

Another thing you can do in Linosa is the one by visiting the small downtown, a very evocative and breathtaking  landscape, suspended in a scenery lost in time .

Linosa small harbour

There is an only road that leads to the downtown of Linosa. It is  forbidden to  cars and  you must walk it on foot or by bike.  That is the only  inhabited center of the island, featured by pastel colored buildings surrounded by pointed  doors and windows. The downtown is entirely gathered around a picturesque and little harbor (see the image).

From there, you can do excursions on foot, to hike the mountains,  or by boat. Linosa is still a quiet island with few inhabitants. In the past, the locals were devoted to farming , while nowadays  they earn a living with tourism. The ending door of Linosa is Vulcano Mount, a small extinct volcano. Inside, Linosa has still a wild and Mediterranean vegetation, such as the typical Sicilian prickly pear plants. You can admire the wild vegetation of Linosa in the so called Fossa del Cappellano (The hole of the chaplain), a secluded area of Linosa well sheltered from the winds.

The fauna of Linosa is featured with an abundant number of Malta lizards and shearwaters. In  summer, at night , the shearwaters  allow you to listen to a poignant chant resembling a cry.

If you love walking on foot , you can ride the paths leading to the top of the main mounts of Linosa: Monte Rosso, whose the crater is occupied   by crops, Monte Nero and Vulcano.

Finally, in addition to the cliffs and mounts, you can also visit the wonderful bays of this island,

namely:  Cala Pozzolana di Levante, Cala Pozzolana di Ponente, Le piscine and La Secchitella.

Linosa turtle

Cala Pozzolana di Levante (East of Linosa) and  Cala Pozzolana di Ponente (West of Linosa) are not so accessible. You can reach them  by boat, to admire their rocky landscape and their black sand. They are free beaches not suitable for sunbathing, but are worthy to be visited for their impressive landscape, and the black sand. These are rocky and pebble beaches surrounded by the volcanic cliffs I mentioned above.  That is why their  surface is black! On these beaches, you can also see the famous Caretta Caretta Turtles (see the image above) that lay their eggs  in August. This species of turtles are also on the other beaches of the Pelagian Archipelago, such as Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa.

Linosa Errera

An unmissable beach of Linosa is Le Piscine , namely a small natural pool dug into the volcanic rock and called Linosa Errera (see the image above). Here, you’ll see reefs surrounding  a rocky  natural  pool closed,  by the land side, with picturesque rocky walls smoothed by weathering  and sinuous waves. The landscape is enriched with caper bushes and an iridescent sea.

Furthermore, if you love diving, I also suggest that you  visit  La Secchitella , one of the most beautiful beaches in Linosa with a spectacular sea depth. Over there, at 25 meters, is a wreck of a ship with archeological findings.

Tour by boat  to Linosa

Linosa landscape

To make a tour by  boat to Linosa, you must ask the small port. The boat leaves the harbor with the rocky mounts behind. Then, you’ll arrive in the Faraglioni of Linosa  and in the beach Le Piscine (you can reach this by land, also). As soon as the boat overcame The Faraglioni, you’ll see the lighthouse. In this part, the coast is fairly jagged . To the end of the tour, you’ll arrive to Cala Pozzolana, the unique beach of Linosa surrounded by incredible colors: from sulfur  yellow to iron red. It is just there, that the ferries coming from Lampedusa are anchored.

How to get to Linosa

get to linosa

It does not  matter that you come from Europe or from overseas, the path to get  to the island Linosa from your Country is always the same. Indeed, Linosa is connected to Sicily from the boat of  Siremar . This boat leaves every day at 11 PM from the port of Porto Empedocle in Agrigento to arrive in Linosa at 6.30 AM of the following day.  A stop of the departures  is scheduled on Saturday and at 12 AM on Friday. The same boat goes to Lampedusa, with departure to Linosa at 10.45 AM  and arrive in the island at 12.45 PM.

If you are from Malta, the best way to reach Linosa is the one to take a flight from Malta to Catania airport and then to follow the above mentioned path.

For  information, you can call the ticket office of Porto Empedocle phone: + 39 0922.636683 – 0922.636685 or the one  of Linosa tel. + 39  0922.972062.

You can also use the ferry of Ustica lines from Sicily to Linosa and from Lampedusa and Linosa.

Hence, if you come from overseas, you must land at Catania or Palermo airport, take a car and go to Porto Empedocle, in Agrigento. From there, you’ll take the ferry to go to Linosa.

To avoid to be blocked in Porto Empedocle , always check the weather of Linosa before leaving.

If you visit the island in summer , you should find good weather, anyway.

Remember that during the summer, from June 1 to September 30, it is forbidden to land on the island with cars. If you have one, you must leave it in a parking in Porto Empedocle. Call this phone number for more information:  + 39  0922.637440.

I also know that the bridge connecting Agrigento to Porto Empedocle has been closed for collapsing risk. Hence,  it is better you visit Linosa through this path: Trapani – Pantelleria and Pantelleria –  Linosa.

Linosa Hotel

Linosa hotel

If you enjoyed this travel guide to Linosa, you should also think to choose a hotel to stay. As said, Linosa is suitable for a short vacation, but if you come from afar,  you can also stay  several days.  In this small Sicilian isle, there aren’t many hotels, because the locals rent their apartments to tourists. Just think that, there is also an abandoned hotel, but if you want to avoid to sleep with mice, it is better to book an apartment. An interesting solution is Casa Blu , namely a typical house of Linosa, with pastel colours and picturesque windows (see the image).  The house is in Umberto street, just in the picturesque downtown of the island. Casa Blu has living room, bedroom, dining room with oven and a terrace. It is also outfitted with a wine bar. In the house, you must prepare dinner by yourself, but, if you want to have lunch at a local restaurant, I advise that you go to the small harbor, where is a pretty and comfortable restaurant .

There, during your vacation, you can eat the delicious lentils and capers of Linosa . All the recipes are absolutely organic, because grown just in this island.

Lampedusa e Linosa (Sicily)

Sicily highlights.

Demand for goats from Alicudi has now outpaced the supply

Alicudi, a tiny island in the Aeolian archipelago, has been in the headlines recently for its goat giveaway scheme, but the demand for cuddly “capre” has now outpaced the supply. We’ve flagged five welfare-minded farms worth visiting if you aren’t quite ready to raise a “kid.”

Pool at Nèroli Bio Relais

This converted 18th century oil-making monastery has the sustainability clout and calm of an average agriturismo,  but with an extra touch of elegance.

Lobby at Ortea Palace Hotel, Sicily, Autograph Collection

Looming over the gateway to the island of Ortigia and its Porto Piccolo, the Ortea Palace pays homage to Syracuse’s layer-cake past with its glossy, Neoclassical-meets-Art Nouveau sensibility.

The Department of Humanities at the University of Catania

Italy has many academic libraries with seriously deep shelves — not to mention gorgeous architectural details — where committed scholars hit the books. Here are a few that you can visit.

Staying at this ornate Sicilian hotel is as close as you can get to time travel, unlocking layer after layer of an elite Palermitan past.

What others are saying about Sicily

Good morning

I am looking for someone to help me with tracing my Sicilian ancestors (Messina, circa 1815!) and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with professional genealogists in the area and could possibly recommend anyone please?

Many thanks

We have bought a house in Sicily and i have been told we need to replace our roof tiles because of a law coming in.  i have searched the internet and cant find a law, so wondered if anyone could help me.  Could it be that we have asbestos roof tiles?

By succession law, we inherited a house. Our names are on the catasta. I want to sell my portion. Can I do so without getting my two sisters involved?

For an offbeat adventure, an unspoiled landscape, a Caribbean sea and fabulous beaches , discover the remote Lampedusa island, where you can go swimming, snorkelling, and scuba diving.

This is the place for you, if you want to find peace and quiet and if you’re looking for beautiful warm sea, amazing food and good weather even in October. The main island is the arid Lampedusa, which is the name of both the largest island and its chief town.

tour lampedusa linosa

Lampedusa island is located just over 100 km from the North African coast and 200 km from the coast of Sicily, for this reason, Lampedusa is a mix of cultures, styles and climate between Sicily, Italy and Africa: a place to visit once in your life.

The island is only 3 Km wide and is 12 Km long. It is a semi-arid island and it has no sources of water other than irregular rainfall.

Overall the island has two slopes, from west to east, and from north to south of the island. The southwestern side is dominated by deep gorges, while the southeastern part is dominated by shallow valleys and sandy beaches.

Lampedusa is a very quiet island and the best thing to do while here is to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Most visitors come to the island to visit the beautiful beaches , spend time relaxing in the sun and swim in its crystal waters.

The spectacular beaches of Lampedusa leave anyone speechless. Although not very well known at international level, they have few equals in the world. The water is transparent, almost turquoise, along the entire coast of the island, very clean, and richly populated by sponges, vegetables (such as the characteristic sea lily) and a myriad of fishes.

Below the 5 best beaches that you cannot miss in Lampedusa island

With its 12 beaches, you have a good choice! Do not miss Island of Rabbits, Cala Pulcino, Cala Creta, Cala Pisana, Mar Morto.. But let’s explore them together.

Isola dei Conigli (Rabbits’ Island)

The beach is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Yes, you read well, in the world. And it is easy to appreciate it just at the first view, with its unique crystal clear water and an incredible white sand.

The beach reminds those of Maldives Islands and its waters are incredible crystalline. (The beach does not have any facilities: no bar, no toilets, no sunbeds.Comfortable shoes are highly recommended as the road is quite rocky).

During summer months , the loggerhead sea turtles choose Isola dei Conigli to reproduce: to avoid problems about, every year WWF volunteers take care of preserving this place.

They also take care of the turtles thanks to a special hospital where these volunteers treat and heal them. It is the Sea Turtle Recovery Center, the perfect place to visit and understand how strong is the human impact on the environment; the entrance for tourists is free.

Cala Pulcino

Cala Pulcino is on the same route of Rabbits’ Island, you will take approx. 40-minutes walk to reach this very beautiful as much as small cove. This route, which is approximately 1.5 kilometres long, follows sections that have been dug out and eroded by water until it reaches the beautiful turquoise-blue sea.

On reaching the beach, which is surrounded with the blue crystal-clear waters of Cala Pulcino, you can observe a wonderful bay with its strip of white sand. It is not equipped with facilities.

tour lampedusa linosa

Beautiful cove that is accessed from the restaurant Bar Cala Creta and is directly by the sea. Wonderful to be reached by boat, it is a sheltered and discreet corner, away from the crowd of Rabbits Beach, where to swim in crystal clear water.

Cala Pisana

The beach is perfect for families : near the centre, it has a dock from which you can dive and it’s full of fish for a nice snorkelling in its huge bay with very blue water.

Mar Morto (dead sea)

Dead Sea, is easily accessible with a moped and is mostly rocky. Great snorkelling and only one cove in respect to the others nearby thanks to the presence of two huge rocks at a short distance.

As you can imagine, Lampedusa is also a paradise for snorkelers and divers who can enjoy a rich and unspoiled submerged world inhabited by corals, sponges, madrepores, the coloured parrot-fish and, by Capo Grecale at only 50m depth, you can see the lobster.

Lampedusa Island Travel Tips:

  • Don’t miss a boat tour : if you do not do this outing you’re missing a good part of Lampedusa viewed from a different perspective, which allows you to visit the length and breadth of the small island, exploring its depths, caves and coves. The costs vary between €40 and €50 for group tours included lunch. Alternatively, you can rent a private boat with 40 horsepower engine that does not require a boat license, at a cost of 50/60€ per day + fuel
  • The best option is to explore the island by bike . If you are lazy, another great way to explore the island is by hiring a scooter or a moped. Several shops rent them around the town for €15-30 per day depending on the season.
  • Don’t forget to visit the WWF Sea Turtle Rescue Centre where you can even touch some Caretta Caretta turtles rescued by the association. If you are lucky, during your stay in Lampedusa, the marine centre will release some recovered turtles right on the beach.

Lampedusa by Night In the evening you can eat out in one of the many locals located in in Via Roma , the main street: fresh fish skilfully cooked and served with genuine products, along with a glass of white wine. The street also hosting a cluster of shops and cafés with outdoor tables, where, in the summer, live music or entertainment shows take place. The island’s natural sponges are a favourite souvenir for tourists.

Best time to visit Lampedusa and Linosa:

June-August is the high season in Lampedusa like much the rest of Italy and Europe. June to August is the most crowded and most expensive time to visit, but with more transportation options for getting there.

In our opinion May, September and October are the best months to visit as the crowds have gone home and the boiling temperatures are now pleasant.

How to get there:

By Plane: planes arrive in Lampedusa from Italy’s principal cities, either via direct flight or with stops in Palermo, Trapani or Catania. Airlines include Alitalia, Air Italy, Blue Express. By Boat: Ferries and hydrofoils also make their way from Porto Empedocle to Lampedusa every day, weather permitting. Both stop in Linosa, but have different costs and hours. Ferry: 8-hour trip, 50-66 Euros per person. Hydrofoil: 4-hour trip, approx. 54 Euros. For info: Siremar and Ustica Lines

The Adventures of Nicole

The Ultimate Lampedusa Travel Guide

Updated March 2024 ,  The Ultimate Lampedusa Travel Guide was originally written in November 2018

Wind whipping through my hair, cruising the narrow streets of Lampedusa by scooter.

Rocking up on desolate and barely known stretches of rugged coast is an all-time favorite of my travels in Italy (you know I’ve been to Italy several times right?).

Closer to Africa than it is to Europe, so close that Lampedusa technically sits on the African continental shelf.

Lampedusa is Italian but you’re definitely not in Italy anymore– it feels a bit like North Africa, from the dusty roads to the landscapes.

But most that have even heard of Lampedusa only know of it as a place where refugees, making the journey from Libya & Tunisia wash up.

This has obviously hurt tourism in Lampedusa over the last few years. Making Lampedusa now most definitely  Italy off the beaten path . Learn everything you need to know in this Lampedusa travel guide.

20 off the beaten path destinations for your Italy itinerary

  • Money : Lampedusa is an island of Italy, therefore the Euro is the currency used.
  • Language : Italian.
  • Where is Lampedusa : Lampedusa is the southernmost part of Italy, so far south that it is technically in Africa as far as continental plates are concerned. It is about 110km off the coast of Tunisia, 175km off the coast of Malta , and 205 km off the coast of Sicily. Lampedusa is the largest and most populous of the Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean.
  • When To Visit : June-August is the high season in Lampedusa like much the rest of Italy and Europe. June to August is the most crowded and expensive time to visit, but with the most transportation options for getting there. In my opinion fall, especially late September into early November are the best months to visit as the crowds have gone home and the boiling temperatures are now pleasant.
  • Visas : Lampedusa is an island of Italy and therefore a part of the European Union. You will only need a visa for Lampedusa travel if you need one in order to visit the EU.

Lampedusa is reachable by flight or by ferry from Sicily.

All throughout the year, there are direct flights to Lampedusa from  Rome , Catania, and Palermo. In the summer months, there are flights from several European cities outside Italy.

The Lampedusa Airport is conveniently located a little over a kilometer from the main town, so walking to town is no problem, however, most accommodations will offer to pick you up.

Siremar runs a ferry that departs Port Empédocle in Sicily every night at midnight, arriving in Lampedusa at 8:15 am.

Tickets run 35-65€ each way depending on the cabin you choose and the time of year.

Cars can be transported on the ferry as well for 60€ to 120€. The ferry stops in Linosa around 6 am.

Getting Around

The best way to get around on Lampedusa is by moped/scooter rental. Several shops rent them around the town for €15-30 per day depending on the season.

Another great way to get around is by bicycle which you will find are available for rent around the main town. In total the island is about 11km long from east to west, so it’s not too big. For those not wanting to drive there is a shuttle between Lampedusa Town and Spiaggia dei Conigli hourly during the daytime.

Another option is to explore the island’s beaches and grottos by day cruise. You will see them on offer down around the harbor in Lampedusa. I cannot comment on any of them as I did not take a cruise on my trip.

Things To Do In Lampedusa

The beauty of Lampedusa is that there’s really not that much to do. The beaches are the main draw for most as they are regarded as the best by some of all of Italy and even of Europe.

  • Hop from beach to beach
  • Cruise around on mopeds
  • Eat fresh caught seafood at a local restaurant
  • Go on a day cruise to see the island’s grottos & rugged coastline
  • Take a hike
  • Scuba dive or snorkle

Where To Go In Lampedusa

Lampedusa is compact enough that you can easily see the highlights in 1-2 days.

Lampedusa Town

One main road and about 20 streets make up the town of Lampedusa. Quite easy to navigate on foot.

Spiaggia dei Conigli

The most famous beach on Lampedusa. I’ve read that the nearby island of Isola dei Conigli gained its name from the abundance of rabbits that once lived on the island and that also it was an error translating the name from the Arab name for the island. Either way, everyone can agree it’s gorgeous. More likely than a rabbit you may see loggerhead turtles out here.

Lampedusa, Lampedusa travel, Lampedusa travel guide, Italy, Southern Italy, Sicily, Pelagie, Pelagie Islands, Cala Pulcino, Pulcino

Cala Pulcino

Rabbit Beach is no secret, and during summer months and sunny days, the beach can get quite crowded. Equally as stunning, albeit rockier a beach is Cala Pulcino sat right next-door to Spiaggia dei Conigli.

The beach is accessible by a trail that is easy to spot from the road. For dramatic views hike out on top of the cliffside that separates Spiaggia dei Conigli from Cala Pulcino.

The Jagged Cliffs Of The North Shore

A trip to Lampedusa really wouldn’t be complete without a scooter ride around the island. The north shore of Lampedusa is set on high cliffs, it’s almost always windy and you’re bound to see tons of birds nesting on the cliffside. There’s also a giant sign just off the road marking the 35º Parallelo.

Cala Creta & Mare Morto

These two rugged side-by-side beaches sit on the east coast of the island. Hike along rocky trails for great views of the jagged coast and turquoise waters. To the east of Mare Morto, there is a lighthouse near the cliff edge.

Cala Croce, Madonna, Greca & Galera

These four beaches are just west of town as you head toward Spiaggia dei Conigli, and all are easily accessible by dirt path from the main road. All are great alternatives to Cala Guitgia which can start to feel quite crowded and small as it is near to town.

Cala Francese, Uccello & Pisana

These quiet beaches wrap around the airport and are a good alternative if you’re looking for a quiet spot away from the town.

Sanctuary Of Our Lady Porto Salvo

A small church set down in a depression off the side of the road with interesting grottos all around in the rocks the church is set amongst.

Linosa is one of Lampedusa’s sister islands of the Pelagie Archipelago. Home to dark-colored beaches thanks to os volcanic origins. Linosa is reachable from Port Empédocle, Sicily by ferry (the same one that connects Lampedusa and Port Empédocle).

Looking for more southern Italian gems to add to your itinerary? Don’t miss  Castelmezzano ,  Alberobello ,  Naples ,  Matera , or the  Amalfi Coast

Where To Sleep

There are several hotels and apartments available on  Booking.com . I personally stayed at  Apartment Cala Creta  and loved it, the owner picks you up at the airport and is very friendly and helpful. Simple beach cabin-style rooms. It is also possible to rent a scooter from them too starting at €15/day.

Lampedusa Travel Budget

Lampedusa travel can be cheap if you’re not fussed by staying in beach cabins or even camping, but like most anywhere else, the skies the limit.

€35 Per Day

Camping or renting a cabin, preparing own meals, renting a scooter

€50+ Per Day

Sleeping in decent hotels or apartment rental, eating at restaurants around town, scootering around the island

€80+ Per Day

Staying in nicer hotels, eating meals at upper-scale restaurants, taking day tours of the island

9 thoughts on “lampedusa travel guide: italy’s southernmost island”.

Hi Nicole, for a first time visitor to Sicily looking for a few days to include beach holiday in mid September, would you recommend Lampedusa as first choice? As fyi, I used to live in Rome and my Italian is pretty good. I’ve traveled extensively from Naples and north of there…but never in the true “south”, or Sicily. I’m having a hard time figuring out a 12-14 day itinerary! Thanks.

Hi Cynthia, I think Lampedusa is a great choice in mid-Sept but you really only need a couple days there at most since it’s so small unless you’re looking to really take it slow. Sicily has heaps to discover as well as Calabria, Basilicata, and Pugia. If you are looking for some ideas you can check out my South Italy road trip itinerary if you haven’t already for some ideas.

Hi Nicole, Were there any safety issues to be aware of for a woman traveling solo or any impact you saw from the refugees situation? It looks like the article was first published in 2018 with an update last October. Anything time sensitive?

No concerns that I felt personally traveling in Lampedusa as a female- Just the standard precautions you’d use anywhere. Of course there has been a history of refugees fleeing and coming to Lampedusa and I did meet a few working around the island when I visited.

Would this be good place to spend entire winter there Nov-April? I’m sure prices would be even better.

I went at the end of October in 2018 and enjoyed it. I was told by our Airbnb host that it can be off and on rainy in winter, but that was the only negative I’ve heard. Prices will definitely be less too!

Hey, Nicole Thank you for your good tips! I will enjoy Lampedusa. ?

Hello! I really enjoyed this article. By the way, I’m going to visit lampedusa this weekend. Do the most shops and restaurants accept credit cards? I’m looking forward to your reply.

Hey Tom, Thanks! We paid cash at some restaurants and shops and card at others (we usually made larger purchases on cards). There are a couple ATMs on the main street on the island as well if you will need to get out euros. Enjoy Lampedusa!
