National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory

A tour guide explains the cyclotrons to a group of high school students.

Tours and Open Houses

If you are curious about what happens in a rare isotope facility and why, a tour is the best way to discover more. Our laboratory offers tours of the research spaces by appointment for interested groups. Public tours generally include demonstrations, an introduction to the goals and methods of nuclear science, and a walk-through of vaults where nuclei are accelerated, filtered and/or studied.

Contact the  Outreach Coordinator to request a tour. Due to the large volume of requests, we recommend requesting public tours at least one month in advance.

  • Recommended Audience:  Ages 10 and up. Adults responsible for visitors who are under 18 must provide the signed minor permission form below. The tour route is handicap-accessible and safe for those with medical implants.

Group size:  to ensure tour quality and safety, we generally limit tours to 10-50 visitors per day . Please provide your best estimate of the number of visitors so we can recruit sufficient guides for your tour.

  • Duration:  90 minutes (can vary, but normally requires at least one hour).
  • Cost:  Free.

Visiting groups should review the following :

  • How to get to the laboratory (includes parking information and how to find the right door)
  • Minor Permission form   (the adult responsible for bringing visitors who are under 18 MUST PROVIDE this upon arrival to tour NSCL)
  • NSCL Brochure   (a general explanation of the laboratory)
  • Nuclear Science Resources  (a primer on the subject, useful to prepare yourself and/or your group
  • Explore the many destinations at Michigan State University (like FRIB) at the Visit Learn Discover website
  • Tour certification form (for non-public tours)
  • Lab Tour instructions (safety notices, what to expect on the tour, and more useful information) also available here as a pdf.

Every few years, our laboratory opens its doors to the community to share what nuclear science is and how our work helps solve some of the greatest mysteries in the universe. These events are an unprecedented look behind the scenes at nuclear research. Open houses are free and open to all ages, no appointment necessary.

The most recent  FRIB and NSCL open house took place 18 August 2018. Read the recap .

Trieu: Versatile Ohio linebacker Dante McClellan to visit Michigan State football

Michigan State will get an official visit from Canton (Ohio) McKinley linebacker Dante McClellan the first weekend of June.

McClellan also has visited for a spring practice, as the Spartans battle Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Rutgers, Louisville and more.

A 247Sports Composite four-star, McClellan is a versatile 6-foot-3, 212-pound prospect who defensive coordinator Joe Rossi has had as a priority recruit since even before he got to Michigan State.

“I have a really good relationship with the defensive coordinator at Michigan State, Coach Rossi,” says Edwin Glick, linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at Canton McKinley. “He offered Dante when he was at Minnesota and when he got the job , he assumed Michigan State had offered. Then he found out they hadn’t and he got on the phone and offered, and Coach Rossi has been an amazing guy. Their staff has done a phenomenal job of coming into that program, knowing how history has been, and made an impact in offering multiple Ohio kids right away, Dante being one of them.”

In today’s game, linebackers have to be able to match up on running backs and tight ends, even receivers at times, all while being able to maintain their traditional responsibilities of stopping the run. That has led to schools recruiting a certain type of athlete for that spot, which McClellan is.

“I think he fits that mold extremely well,” Glick said. “The first time I saw Dante, I met him and I thought he was a senior. One thing that stands out is how his body is built. He’s a true 6-2, 6-3 and is everything I would recruit when I was coaching linebackers at the college level. He runs a low 4.6, high 4.5, and we ask him to play a lot of man coverage here at McKinley, and he does it extremely well.”

Well enough that some schools can see McClellan being a safety in college.

Most of the field, including Michigan State, see him as an outside linebacker who can be a WILL in some situations, a SAM in others.

“I think he will excel big time in those roles,” Glick said.

The versatility, size and speed all have given McClellan his lengthy list of options. Following his official visits, he plans to move toward a commitment that will hopefully come before his senior season kicks off.

McClellan is ranked the No. 13 junior in Ohio by the 247Sports Composite. He finished his junior season with 75 tackles (13 for loss), four sacks and an interception. He was a second-team all-state selection.

MSU makes new offer, re-affirms offer in Indy

Michigan State offered Indianapolis Lawrence North wide receiver Davion Chandler on Monday. A quick-footed 6-foot, 170-pound junior, the Spartans now join Wisconsin, West Virginia, Louisville and others on the three-star recruit’s offer list. He has not visited MSU yet but dates are being worked through.

The Spartans also re-offered Indianapolis Ben Davis defensive tackle Isaiah White . White (6-3, 270 pounds) was offered by the previous staff. A three-star prospect, White visits Illinois this week and plans to set a date with MSU. He has an official visit with Washington the weekend of June 21.

U-M to Head to Michigan State for Spartan Invitational

4/3/2024 5:23:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

By: Jordan Manning

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field program will compete in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State on Friday (April 5) beginning at 10:52 a.m.

• Action at the Ralph Young Track will begin at 10:52 p.m. with the 5,000-meter run.

• The Wolverines have been solid through the first three weeks of outdoor action. In the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings, the 1,500-meter run squad is No. 2 and the 800-meter run squad is No. 4.

• The Maize and Blue split action last weekend, with the distance squad competing at the Stanford Invitational and the rest of the team competing at the Battle on the Bayou hosted by LSU.

• In Palo Alto, Calif., Tom Brady set the program record for the 10,000-meter run with a time of 28:21.89, shaving 25 seconds off his previous personal-best (28:46.83). Luke Venhuizen finished fourth in section four of the 5,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 13:52.88. In section three of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Caleb Jarema finished second with a personal best of 8:52.09.

• At LSU, Nick Foster (3:40.36) finished first, Trent McFarland (3:42.99) finished second, Riley Flemington (3:43.56) finished third, and Henry Johnson (3:34.56) finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run. Flemington and Johnson both set career bests and all four Wolverines broke the meet record. Foster's time set a new 1,500-meter run standard for the meet.

• In the 800-meter run, Johnson finished fourth with a personal-best time of 1:48.27 and Foster finished fifth with a personal-best 1:48.28. McFarland placed sixth (1:48.66), Camden Law placed 11th with a personal-best 1:49.83, and Flemington finished 12th (1:50.26) with a season-best time. Johnson's time is the 10th fastest in program history.

• Dubem Amene ran 46.01 seconds to finish seventh in the 400-meter dash, just a half-second shy of tying his personal best. Jacob Koerner placed 20th (48.18) while Lawrence Gilliam placed 23rd (48.36), with both running season bests.
