How to Obtain A Tourism License In Tanzania (Tours and Travel Operator) – Tanzania is a country known for its vast wilderness areas, most famous and worl d -renowned national parks , natural attractions and beautiful islands. It is also  home to Africa’s largest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro , a beautiful sight for both locals and tourists.   

Many locals and foreign investors have sighted a gold mine in Tanzania’s tourism sector  and are wasting no time in milking  this cow. There are a number of Tours and Travel companies making money through providing  services like hiking, nature walk s , game safaris, scuba diving,  camping,  mountain climbing; the list is endless. Setting up a Tours and Travel company is hassle free, due to Tanzania’s reputation for ease of doing business.  

Before starting operations, one needs a Tour License,  These are the major steps followed when you are looking to process A Tourism License In Tanzania.  

  • Submit your request for registration  

The first step is to go to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to submit your request for registration of a Tour License. The requirements for this are as follows:   

  • Registration and  Licens e application form   
  • Copy of  Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Certificate   
  • Copy of t he project’s Business Plan  or  Feasibility Study   
  • A copy of  Lease  A greement  or  Title  D eed   
  • P roof of business premises  
  • A copy of  Certificate of  I ncorporation   
  • A copy of  Memorandum and Articles of Association or  C harter or  St atutes 
  • Certified  copy of  Certificate of incentives   
  • Proof of nationality of each shareholder  and director, e.g.  passport, work permit  or n ational  ID  
  • Proof of having 4WD fleet of vehicle 
  • Tour vehicles must be new   
  • Vehicles must be registered under company names
  • Have a fleet of not less than 10 vehicles.   
  • Comprehensively insured and inspected by relevant authority
  • Physical inspection of business premises (office) and vehicles.  

This step involves a representative or officer from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to inspect whether your businesses premises are up to par with their standards and if the Tour vehicles and new and roadworthy.   

  • Obtain  p ayment  i nvoice  and licensing payment.  

Once your premises and vehicles have been approved, you shall be given the go-ahead to obtain a payment invoice that will show the amount payable for the license and pay licensing fees  through NMB Bank. You will then proceed with your bank slip and payment invoice in order to obtain your receipt , and finally submit your signed invoice.   

  • Obtain your Tourism License.   

It will take about 10-15 days for your license to be ready.

Moses Njole |Tourism & Tour Guide Lecturer – MWEKA.(Chief Judge)

He is a tourism and tour guide lecturer from the College of African Wildlife Management (CAWM)-Mweka currently working with USAID – PROTECT Project as a Senior Capacity Building Specialist. Mr. Njole is both a tourism and conservation expert specialized in Leisure, Tourism and Environment. He has extensive knowledge of national and international tourism with a vast experience in the country’s tourism industry. He has pioneered various tour guiding initiatives in the country including the mountain tour guide training at CAWM-Mweka in collaboration with Kilimanjaro Guides Association. He is currently the Chief Judge in Tanzania Tour Guide Award. Mr. Njole is a technical lead in the ongoing project “Tour Guiding Training Registration and Certification” a collaborative project between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (Tourism Directorate) and USAID – PROTECT Project. He is also a Board Member for the Tanzania Tour Guide Association (TTGA).

Alexandra Pastollning | Founder – Fair Voyage.

Alexandra is the founder of Fair Voyage (formerly KiliGATE), a sustainable travel platform. Starting with ethical Kilimanjaro climbs and eco safaris in Tanzania, Fair Voyage exclusively promotes verified socially and environmentally responsible suppliers. Alexandra holds the Travelife Sustainability Manager title and served on the Board of the International Mountain Explorers Connection, a non-profit organization committed to promoting the working conditions of the porters on Mount Kilimanjaro through its local initiative, the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). Prior to venturing into tourism and social entrepreneurship, Alexandra gained over 12 years of experience in the banking industry, most recently as Director Mergers & Acquisitions. In between, she also authored the book Kilimanjaro Uncovered and cycled from Cairo to Cape Town, all the way through Africa. Alexandra has lived in 9 countries and speaks 5 languages. Her vision – making sustainable travel easy so that together we can implement the Global Sustainable Development Goals in tourism.

Devota Mdachi |Managing Director – TTB.

Devota Mdachi was born on June 9 th , 1966 in Bukoba-Tanzania.

She started working with Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB)  in 1994 and was first employed as a Tourist Information Officer, at the TTB, Branch Office in Arusha. In 1998, she was transferred to Dar-es-salaam, the commercial capital city of Tanzania,  and was attached at the Tourist Information Centre. She later rose to the level of Senior Tourist Information Officer in 2000; Principal Tourist Information Officer and Head of the Tourist Information Centre, Dar-es-salaam in 2004.

In May, 2010, Ms. Mdachi was appointed Principal Marketing Officer.

In March 2011, Ms. Mdachi worked with the Regional Tourism Organization of Southern Africa (RETOSA), under the Marketing and Communications  Department for a period of three months. On her return to Tanzania in June 2011, Ms. Mdachi was appointed Director of Marketing of the Tanzania Tourist Board, and later Ag. Managing Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board in March 2014. In January 2016 Ms. Mdachi was confirmed to the position of Managing Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board.

Ms. Mdachi is the first Tanzania woman to hold the positions of Director of Marketing and Managing Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board.

Through her position and undertakings over the years, Ms. Mdachi has been able to be a great role model to women in Tanzania, and in the tourism sector in particular. She has been nominated as one of the most recipients of the ‘Nyerere Golden Awards’  by The Mwl. J.K Nyerere Golden Awards in Science and Technology Achievements in 2014 and 2015 which recognizes women in Tanzania who have contributed towards Community Development and have genuinely imparted changes to people’s lives. In 2016, the CEO Global (Pty) LTD a South African based company, awarded Ms.Mdachi as  ‘country winner in Government; Employed Official Sector of CEO Global’s Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government’.

Ms. Mdachi has a BA degree in International Relations and Advanced French Language from the University of Dar-es-salaam (1991); M.A in Tourism from the Open University of Tanzania (2008) and Post Graduate Certificate in Tourism from the International School of Tourism, Rome Italy (2000).

Hellen Peeks | Director – ZATI.

Helen Peeks is the new Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors director.  She has a long history of working in Zanzibar,  more recently as manager of Chumbe Island Coral Park eco-lodge for five years, and eight years as the academic director of the School for International Training, World Learning inc., focusing on coastal ecology and natural resource management in relation to tourism.  Her other projects include the development of the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre; supporting the Emerson Zanzibar Foundation working with youth in the arts sector and also on the board of the Zanzibar Association of Employers.  Helen has three degrees in social and environmental issues, anthropology and development respectively.

Kokel Melubo | Tourism Senior Lecturer – Mweka.

Dr. Kokel Melubo is a Senior Lecturer in tourism studies at the College of African Wildlife Management (Mweka), and Kilimanjaro. He served as the Head of Department of Wildlife Tourism. Prior to joining Mweka College, he taught at the Tumaini University of Iringa. He received his Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Business Tourism in the School of Business, University of Otago, New Zealand. His research interests fall under the broad theme of sustainable tourism, but with a focus on corporate social responsibility, community tourism, best practices, tour guiding and mountaineering. His Ph.D. examines meaning, motivations and barriers to Corporate Social Responsibility from the Tanzanian tourism industry. He has several publications in reputable journal papers and books

Marc Baker | Director – Carbon Tanzania.

Marc Baker is the founding director of Carbon Tanzania, a Tanzanian company that develops forest conservation and climate mitigation projects. Marc has worked in conservation and ecotourism in Tanzania since 1998. He has worked as an environmental planner and wildlife specialist for Danida, Care International, the Wildlife Division of Tanzania and Nor-consult, and has a broad understanding of a range of environmental practices leading to business management for sound ecological practice. Marc advises companies and organizations wishing to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by measuring the impact and linking it to community-based carbon forest projects in Tanzania through verified emission reductions.

Mathilde Bousquet | Consultant.

I’m Mathilde, a French girl from Lyon.  I’m finishing my master degree in tourism and I specialize in sustainable Tourism. For me today, it’s necessary to minimize the negative effects of the tourism industry and use this activity to protect traditional, cultural and natural resource of the planet. It’s the reason why I choose to specialize me in responsible tourism and ecotourism. I did an internship in Costa Rica to create a new guided tour about ecotourism, I also created a community project to offer to the children some free classes of French and sustainability. For few months also I did my last internship with the tour operator Amo Zanzibar Tours and Safari who wants to propose sustainable tourism discover of Zanzibar and Tanzania, and I learn more about sustainability with this experience.

Nura-Lisa Karamagi | CEO – HAT.

Nura-Lisa is a young dynamic Tanzanian woman and a lawyer by profession. She has worked in the tourism industry since 2003 working in various positions from sales and marketing to managing accommodation facilities in Tanzania whilst also pursuing her law degree which she attained cum laude in 2009 from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  Nura – Lisa also holds a Master’s Degree in Development Studies from the Institute of International Relations and Development Studies Geneva, Switzerland (graduate of 2015). She worked at UONGOZI Institute, under the  President’s office as a policy analyst until she joined HAT as it’s CEO in May 2017. In this capacity, she represents the hospitality sector on all strategic partnerships,  advocacy and public relations matters with the government of the United Republic of Tanzania and other tourism stakeholders.

Sally Capper | Consultant.

Currently working with positive social change for youth through health, finance, governance and the environment, with the Shujaaz platform, Sally has been occupied in tourism and community development for the past 25+ years in Tanzania. She spent several years working with Fairtrade – both on the auditing side and on the development of the hired labor standard and, through her passion for sustainability assessments, was instrumental in setting up the RTTZ standards and criteria and also in the training of the auditors.

Tanzania Tourist Board gets new Chief Executive Officer

The Tanzanian president Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Mr. Damasi Mfugale as the new Managing Director of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB).

Damasi is the Chief Advisor, of Africa Chapter EBI International Consulting Group and former Hospitality Association of Tanzania (HAT).

He holds a Masters of Arts (MA) in International Hospitality and Tourism Management from IMI in Switzerland and is a seasoned hospitality industry person.

With twenty years of professional tourism and hospitality experience in Switzerland, the USA, Tanzania, and South Africa, Damasi has a progressive advancement and consistent achievement within the private sector and government-funded agencies and institutions.

He has an extensive work experience as Chairman, Member of Boards, and Director in the tourism and hospitality industry.

From a tourism and hospitality perspective, Damasi possesses an excellent reputation for defining corporate direction, providing leadership by engaging employees, being customer-focused, and promoting individual and institutional objectives attainment.

Being an inclusive and collaborative leader and a manager he strives to build strong commitment, competence, and motivation, at the same time fixing success processes to safeguard productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, and quality to achieve the essential performance results and organizational mission.

Taking a high-profile position in Tanzania’s tourism industry, the newly appointed TTB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) possesses an extensive tourism and hospitality professional background in both local and international networks.

Tanzania Tourist Board is a government organization that was legally established by the Tanzania Tourist Board Act, CAP 364 of 1962, and amended by act by act No. 18 of 1992 to create the Tanzania Tourist Board.

TTB was formed in 1993 after the disbandment of the Tanzania Tourist Corporation. The Board is mandated with the promotion and development of all aspects of the tourism industry in Tanzania.

Tanzania had targeted to raise its current 1.5 million tourists to 6 (six million) by 2025 through marketing and promotion strategies.

Making it a lead economic priority under her administration, President Samia had last year launched the Royal Tour documentary, targeting to expose Tanzania’s rich tourism heritage to the global travel map.
