15 Best Things to Do in Stuart (FL)
On Florida’s Treasure Coast, this city has a one-off location where the St. Lucie River joins the Intracoastal Waterway.
Stuart is also at the eastern end of the Okeechobee Waterway, running from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico in Ft. Myers.
In my view, seaside towns don’t get much prettier than Stuart. Going back to the 1880s, downtown has held onto its historic character, with no sign of skyscraping condos.
With big sweeps of water to the east and west, sunrise and sunset are equally breathtaking in Stuart.
There’s a lineup of superb visitor attractions, going into local history and ecology, and you also have the unbridled beauty of the Atlantic shore all along Hutchinson Island, moments away.
1. Downtown Stuart
First developed in the 1880s, Stuart has a downtown that wins me over every time. In particular, I love the narrow drag on SW Osceola St, almost overflowing with restaurants, galleries, shops, and entertainment.
The Lyric Theater here is a grand Moorish Revival building, dating back to 1926. This former movie palace is now a stage for performing arts in Stuart.
The surrounding turn-of-the-century townscape has more than 50 locally owned businesses to check out.
Another thing that grabs me about this place is just how much there is going on, from weekly outdoor concerts to the annual Downtown Stuart Craft Festival in March.
2. Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center
One of two essential attractions by Stuart Beach is the headquarters of the Florida Oceanographic Society.
This is located in nearly 60 acres of coastal hammock and mangroves, brimming with educational wildlife experiences.
For instance, there’s a 750,000-gallon gamefish lagoon, touch tanks for stingrays and invertebrates. Meanwhile the Ocean EcoCenter, has a set of aquariums showing off the area’s rich marine life.
I’d urge you to catch the twice-daily Sea Turtle Program. This introduces you to Florida’s five sea turtle species, and shows you how to identify them and help safeguard them against common threats.
3. Elliott Museum
Also next to Stuart Beach, this modern museum is run by the Martin County Historical Society. The Elliott Museum dates back to 1961, and unveiled this new, 48,000-square-foot complex in 2013.
The galleries are a dizzying miscellany, landing on topics like baseball, pineapple cultivation, aviation, art, seafaring, pirates, shipwrecks, and much more.
What makes the Elliott Museum essential in my eyes is the collection of vintage commercial vehicles. On show at the Wheels of Change exhibit, this fleet is primarily made up of Ford Model As and Model AAs.
They are presented on a three-level racking system. You can see them descend on a robotic tray and rotate on a turntable.
4. Stuart Riverwalk
From downtown, you can embark on a walk along the St. Lucie River. I have to say, I was surprised at just how long the Riverwalk was.
One place to pick up the trail is at the north end of S Colorado Ave. From here you’ll soon be on a scenic boardwalk, leading up behind the City Hall and along Flagler Park.
One of the best things about this attraction is the live entertainment. Every Sunday afternoon, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm, there’s live music on the spectacular waterfront stage, with tiers of seats looking out over the river.
This is another uplifting community event, with pets welcome, and free shuttles from Osceola, Sailfish or Kiwanis Park.
5. House of Refuge Museum
Along the rocky Gilbert’s Bar, about 10 minutes from downtown, is a riveting piece of maritime heritage. The oldest building in Martin County, the House of Refuge (1876) is a preserved shipwreck life-saving station.
This is the last of ten similar facilities built along Florida’s Atlantic Coast. At a time when the shore was sparsely populated, stations like this were a vital haven for shipwrecked sailors or travelers.
Among the people to take shelter at the House of Refuge were people from the Georges Valentine. This Italian barkentine was wrecked no more than 100 yards offshore. Even today the wreck is a popular dive site.
You can tour the complex, check out exhibits documenting the station’s eventful past, and pore over a trove of artifacts. I saw period clothing, lamps, historic lifesaving gear, U.S. Lifesaving Service uniforms, and a genuine 19th-century commode.
6. Stuart Beach
There’s public beach access for miles up and down the shore near Stuart. Still, if you want a hassle-free afternoon full of sun, surf and sand, Stuart Beach on Hutchinson Island checks all the right boxes.
First up, you can get here in under ten minutes from downtown. Awaiting you is a massive sweep of pale sand that becomes a sea turtle nesting site between April and October.
For amenities there’s a concession stand, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, BBQ pits, basketball courts and a volleyball court.
My one word of advice is to beware the steep drop-off, which might be a bit much for children. Naturally, Stuart Beach is a prime place in the city if you want to watch the sun come up.
7. Stuart Heritage Museum
Near the waterfront at 161 Southwest Flagler Avenue there’s a fantastic local history museum in an old commercial building. This is the old Stuart Feed Store, which was built in 1901 and opened as the George W. Parks Grocery and General Merchandise Store.
The Stuart Heritage Museum has a huge collection, relevant to all aspects of the city’s past. This includes Seminole Native American artifacts, pioneer tools, furniture from local homes, and memorabilia relating to celebrities from Stuart.
For my part, I thought the displays on Stuart’s pineapple production and sport fishing brought the city’s 20th-century roots into focus.
8. Shepard Park
Just west of downtown Stuart you can reach another picture-perfect hangout by the water. Shepard Park is where Frazier Creek flows into the South Fork of the St. Lucie River.
There’s a paved trail and boardwalk along both stretches of waterfront. Walking here, I was astounded at how casual the birdlife is. Within a few steps I had seen an ibis, an osprey, a heron, and several pelicans.
As it faces west Shepard Park takes on a kind of ethereal beauty when the sun is low. So, make sure you stop by before or after heading out to dinner.
9. Halpatiokee Regional Park
Martin County’s largest park is made up of more than 500 acres of both developed land and preserved natural areas.
Soccer and baseball fields, a disc golf course, tennis courts, and an outdoor roller rink are big attractions for those looking to burn a few calories.
If you’d rather get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in nature, there are a variety of trails open to walkers and bikers. The wilder parts of the park are composed of oak hammock, pine flatwoods, scrub and riparian habitats.
Walking these trails I was intrigued to learn that the park harbors at least a dozen plant and animal species considered threatened or endangered by the State of Florida.
10. Sandsprit Park
Maintained by Martin County, this public park occupies a scenic point at the entrance to Manatee Pocket Harbor.
Just a few minutes from downtown Stuart, Sandsprit Park stands out for being the closest water access to the St. Lucie Inlet.
As far as I’m concerned, the joy of this park lies in its riverfront views. You can see for miles over the water, and the park’s rim has a continuous boardwalk with benches along it. As you can imagine, the panorama at sunrise is truly special.
There’s also birdlife everywhere you look, in particular pelicans on the docks, and parrots in the tree canopy.
11. Sailfish Splash Waterpark
With so many stunning beaches close by, it might be easy to overlook this Waterpark, operated by Martin County.
All the same, this is a wonderful place for kids to frolic in cool water when the beach’s direct sunlight and salt water are too much.
Despite being a public facility, I thought Sailfish Splash Water Park looked like something out of a resort.
There are modern amenities for a variety of ages. Among them you’ve got a 1,000-foot lazy river, two four-story slides, a water playground, and an Olympic pool for lap swimming. Even if it’s mostly a kids’ attraction, parents usually end up having a blast as well.
12. Savannas Preserve State Park
In Stuart you’re near the southern entrance to an enormous basin marsh habitat, running parallel to the coast for miles.
What you see at the Savannas Preserve State Park are the kinds of landscapes that greeted Florida’s pioneers. There are six natural communities here. One that I need to tell you about is the rare sand pine scrub.
Lining the eastern margins of the park, this rare habitat is disappearing all over the world. Sand pines tower over this landscape, which is home to gopher tortoises, and the state’s only native bird, the Florida scrub jay.
Biking, hiking, and horseback riding are popular activities, as are kayaking and paddleboarding in the wetlands.
13. St. Lucie Lock and Dam
For something a little out of the ordinary, you could trace the St. Lucie Canal about a few miles upstream to this lock.
Maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers, there has been a lock at this site since 1925, while the current system dates from the 1940s.
More than 10,000 vessels a year pass through the locks, from recreational traffic to commercial shipping. For infrastructure nerds like me, this is a fun sight to check out, especially when boats are passing through. If you’re lucky you may even see manatees making their way along the canal.
The USACE maintains a campground at this spot, and there’s a small visitor center, with exhibits about inland shipping. There’s also a playground, and several picnic tables by the water.
14. Stuart Boathouse
I’d challenge anyone to come up with a better spot for a seafood restaurant than the St. Lucie riverfront in downtown Stuart.
Get a table here on a Sunday afternoon and your meal will be accompanied by live music at the Stuart Riverwalk Stage.
Making the most of those sensational views, the Stuart Boathouse is about upscale dining with a small-town atmosphere.
As a fan of sushi, this is just my kind of spot. I got the spicy tuna roll, with marinated tuna, sriracha, avocado and cucumber. In terms of entrees my personal pick was the Blackened Mahi Mahi, over lime jasmine rice, with black beans and chimichurri.
15. Stuart Airshow
For more than three decades, there has been a world-class air show every year at Witham Field.
Partnering with several local nonprofits, the Stuart Air Show is a celebration of aviation, paying tribute to its past while inspiring its future.
For those who’ve never experienced a live airshow, they’re amazing spectacles filled with high and low-altitude maneuvers, smoke trails, and screaming engines.
When I attended, there were a slew of military performers. One that sticks in my memory is the USAF F-22 “Raptor” Demonstration Team, showing what this cutting-edge stealth fighter can do.
The event’s additional attractions include live entertainment, arts and crafts, tasty food and drink, and lots of family-friendly activities.

Best Things to Do in Stuart, FL: Your Ultimate Guide to Martin County’s Gem
By: Author Melody Pittman
Posted on April 22, 2024
Tucked away on Florida’s scenic Treasure Coast, the quaint city of Stuart is your escape into blissful adventures without the hustle and crowded sidewalks you might expect. Just a stone’s throw from West Palm Beach and a scenic drive southeast of Orlando, Stuart will surprise you with hidden nooks and stunning scenery waiting at every turn. Here are the best things to do in Stuart, FL, that I’ve experienced over the years.
Dubbed the Sailfish Capital of the World and once celebrated as the “Happiest Seaside Town” by Coastal Living in 2016, this gem in Martin County woos with its vibrant ecotourism and affordable escapades.
A Coastal Haven for All Seasons

Stuart gifts you tranquility with beauty as infinite as the horizon. Adjacent, Ross Witham Beach beckons snorkelers and divers to its coral reef treasures just offshore.
Cultural Pursuits and Pleasures
For curious minds, the Elliott Museum unravels local history and Florida culture in a whirlwind of exhibits that span classic cars to baseball legends. Prepare to be amazed at what’s inside this Stuart treasure. The three-story 100+ car electronic exhibit brings the car you select to the front, then to the first floor, for a closer view.
Adult tickets are $18, and children (6-12) are $10.
Not too far, the House of Refuge stands as a time capsule on the coastline, stocked with displays narrating tales of shipwrecked sailors and lifesaving bravery. It is one of the only ten remaining and the oldest building in Martin County.
Are you seeking more creativity? The Fish House Art Center in nearby Port Salerno offers an authentic slice of artistic living in a 3,000-square-foot gallery with resident artists sharing their crafts. Upcoming shows include The Weight Band, Alison Brown Quintet, BoDeans, The Fifth Dimension, and several tribute bands.
And for capturing great photographs of downtown Stuart, hop on the free open-air tram—which can also give you a glance at shopping and dining opportunities.
Even if you’re just passing by, the boutique Old Colorado Inn teases with the Sneaki Tiki bar—because the 5:00 somewhere spirit is 24/7 in Stuart.
Stuart’s Vibrant Market Life
Sundays in Stuart are a treat with the Market on Main Downtown Stuart , previously the Stuart Green Market. Here, local goods, from handcrafted soaps to artisan crafts, are more than just items; they are also stories and local passions. A fun offering is the ‘Kids Market,’ dedicated to vendors under age 16 to nurture blossoming young entrepreneurs on the last Sunday of the month.
The Flagler Park located market (201 SW Flagler Ave) is open year-round, with summer hours 9 AM – 1 PM and season hours 9 AM – 2 PM.
Following the market, Rock’n Riverwalk stages local musicians to fill the air with music as inviting as the water’s edge every Sunday from 1-4 PM.
A few local shops you will want to check out are Gumbo Limbo Coastal Chic (coastal-inspired home decor and apparel), GypSea Cottage (gifts and treasures), Matilda’s (everything fabulous! O’Sole Mio (men’s and women’s resort wear), and Rare Earth Gallery (paintings, pottery, local and regional glass).

This is such a complete guide! And it looks like there's plenty to see and do there, from beaches and boats to yummy seafood! I'd especially like to visit the Jonathan Dickinson State Park to learn a bit more about the local habitat and wildlife. Wouldn't mind an eggs benny from Jan's Place either!
Mmm breakfast from Jan's Place sounds delicious! :)
I am loving that you have chosen to introduce locally owned businesses like the Old Colorado Inn and all the amazing places to eat! My mouth started watering over the watermelon pizza! I think the music festival in November would be when I'd time my visit! One day.. :)
I hope you get to visit!
A very informative article, thank you! So far I had not heard anything about this corner of Florida. But it seems like it's really worth a visit.

Bathtub Reef Beach
Bathtub Reef Beach is where the magic of nature creates a haven for marine life and a safe playground for beach lovers! This beautiful beach boasts a fragile reef built by tiny tub-building sea worms called Sabellariidae. These industrious worms cement sand grains together, forming a massive network of tubes that ultimately build up to create a reef.
The reef at Bathtub Beach serves a dual purpose: not only does it provide a home for over 500 marine animals, but it also acts as a wave breaker, creating a calm, “bathtub-like” area for kids to play safely in the water.
So, grab your snorkel gear and get ready to explore the wonders of Bathtub Reef Beach, where nature’s tiny architects have created a paradise for both humans and marine life.

Go Vegetable Picking
About 40 minutes west of Stuart in the town of Indiantown you can pick your own beautiful vegetables! The farm is called 710 U-Pick. It’s a little tough to find as the signage is not real good, so here’s a Google map to help you out.
You can pick your own or you can buy what they’ve already picked, but it’s so much fun (and less expensive) to walk through the rows of tomatoes, different types of eggplant, tomatillos, and the many kinds of peppers. Fill up 2.5 gallon buckets for $9.00, or 5 gallon buckets for $18.00. Once you’ve filled your buckets, walk the rows of lettuces, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. These don’t go in your bucket, these are by the pound. We got cabbage, 10 tomatoes, all types of peppers too numerous to count, 12 eggplants, and 8 tomatillos all for $20! Just look at these beautiful veggies…. gotta get cooking!

8 Amazing Things To Do In Sunny Stuart, Florida For The Whole Family

- Family Vacations
- Types of Travel
- United States
Imagine the perfect town for a nuclear or multigenerational vacation. It would be near the water, full of attractions and activities to keep everyone happy and occupied, and exude the kind of genuine friendliness and charm to make you never want to leave. Well, imagine no more. The town you’re yearning for is Stuart, the seat of Martin County, Florida.
Located on South Florida’s Treasure Coast between Daytona Beach and Miami, Martin County has more than 22 miles of powdery beaches and 100,000 acres of eco-friendly parks and conservation lands.
My husband and I spent some time in this Treasure Coast paradise and found it uncrowded, unpretentious, and full of delightful surprises. I’m sharing our experiences so that you can find your own vacation paradise, too.
Our visit to Stuart was hosted by Discover Martin County . However, all opinions are entirely my own.
1. Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa
Jensen Beach is minutes from downtown Stuart, but once you step onto the Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa property, you’re in another world. This oceanfront resort offers stretches of golden beach on the outside and an ocean-inspired décor that blends with every aspect of its interior.
Hutchinson contains 178 classy, comfortable oceanfront rooms and suites. Every night, we fell asleep to the soporific sound of ocean waves hitting the beach through our open-balcony door.
Amenities include two outdoor pools, oceanfront dining, a spa, and easy access to Stuart and other Martin County treasures.
2. Historic Downtown Stuart
Historic Downtown Stuart is a treasure trove of more than 50 locally-owned shops, restaurants, and galleries mere steps from the scenic St. Lucie River. Lovers of architecture will appreciate the turn-of-the-century buildings and historic homes. While history buffs will enjoy a look around the Stuart Heritage Museum .
Watch a movie, play, or concert at the Lyric Theater , which has been in operation since 1926. Take a pleasant stroll along the Riverwalk, or catch some live music and a nightcap before turning in.
Pro Tip: Stuart is comfortably walkable, but you can also ride the free downtown tram.
3. Martin County Beaches
Stuart is surrounded by miles of stunning beaches , and because Martin County isn’t as well-known as other Florida destinations, the crowds are thinner. Beachcombers have plenty of room to sit, swim, or sunbathe. But for many, a day at the beach is often difficult — if not impossible — because of mobility challenges. Martin County has made sure residents and visitors can enjoy area beaches alongside their families and friends.
Weather permitting, the guarded beaches — Bathtub, Jensen, Stuart, and Hobe Sound — make rolling beach wheelchairs available free of charge for individuals with a variety of mobility needs. These all-terrain chairs are constructed with PVC, making them lightweight. They have four air-filled balloon tires, so navigating through sand is possible. Each chair also comes equipped with an umbrella and a roomy pouch attached to the back to hold essential items.
If you require help, simply ask the beach’s guard tower and a lifeguard will assist you
Pro Tip: Always check tidal schedules and view the beach cams for current conditions before setting off.
4. Treasure Coast River Cruises
For a unique picture of Stuart and surrounding areas, seeing them from a pontoon boat will give you an entirely different perspective. Treasure Coast River Cruises offers four entertaining sightseeing cruises.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our Sandbar Cruise, departing from Sandsprit Park in South Stuart and returning 2 hours later with big smiles. Our captain was charming, informative, and hilarious. Learning about the wildlife we saw, listening to stories past and present, and simply being out on the water felt like a floating mini-vacation.
The pontoons carry a maximum of six and are roomy and comfortable. The captains are properly licensed and safety-conscious. You can bring any food or drink you like, including alcoholic beverages. Water is available free of charge.
5. Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center
One of Stuart’s most popular attractions is the Florida Oceanographic Center . This 57-acre parcel is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. The massive complex is home to the Florida Oceanographic Society’s headquarters, nature trails, a 750,000-gallon Game Fish Lagoon, a children’s activity pavilion, a sea turtle pavilion, and the award-winning Ocean EcoCenter. And that’s only the beginning. You’ll need at least half a day to engage your senses in the center’s offerings.
There was so much to see and do, my husband and I could barely take it all in. We were shown how to pet and feed a stingray, marveled at rescued sea turtles and an adorable baby octopus, and watched fascinated children engage with interactive educational activities.
Pro Tip: A fine spot to take a break is the third-floor viewing deck with a spectacular view overlooking the lagoon.
6. The Elliott Museum
Across the street from the Florida Oceanographic Center is another family-friendly wonderland where you can spend a couple of hours delving into the past. The Elliott Museum is best known for its impressive vintage car collection, which includes some of the first vehicles to take to the road.
From familiar oldies to models of which few have heard, a wander through the exhibits is a treat for all. If you want to see a particular vehicle that isn’t on the floor, simply select it from a list. In minutes, it will magically appear from the multi-story automated storage facility, along with all its information displayed on a nearby computer screen.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to visit the second floor for shipwreck artifacts, a genuine moonshine still, replicas of an old apothecary and general store, an impressive collection of Major League Baseball memorabilia, art, and more.
7. Children’s Museum Of The Treasure Coast
Located in Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach, the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast has an outstanding array of exhibits to encourage children to learn about their world, create, and explore their interests and talents.
The Baby Beach House is an area where the littlest ones can play in a safe environment. Hospital and vet clinics let the kids play doctor with replicas of internal organs and bones. And The Spanish Galleon — a 64-foot, 16th-century replica — enables children to experience life aboard the ship on a 90-day crossing through sound, smell, touch, and story-telling. They can even fire soft rubber cannonballs at imaginary enemy ships.
The museum is filled with happy noise, bright colors, and flashing lights. For this reason, there are designated calm areas for children with autism, where parents can take them to destress. Regularly scheduled Sensory Friendly Days give these children the run of the museum without the noise and lights.
Pro Tip: Admission fees can add up, but reduced rates are available through Groupon and other discount programs.
8. Hobe Sound
Sometimes, the journey is as satisfying as the destination. You can transform a 30-minute drive along SE Federal Highway from Stuart to Hobe Sound into a day, or half-day, adventure by taking advantage of things to see and do on the way.
Blowing Rocks Preserve

How to Spend Three Days in Stuart, Florida
(Updated October 2023)
If you are looking to spend a perfect weekend in Florida and don’t want to include the magical mouse of Orlando or the fast-paced high-rise glamour & glitz of Miami, then you might find what you are looking for in the charming coastal town of Stuart. I like it so much that I have made this town on the Treasure Coast of Florida my home. Since I live here, I have a chance to visit these locations periodically during the year. Come with us as we take you on a perfect three-day weekend in Stuart, Florida.
Places to Stay:
Hutchinson shores resort & spa.
If the beach is where you desire to stay, I recommend the Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa. This hotel has been totally rebuilt after a hurricane took out the old Holiday Inn and the facilities are beautiful. Upon arrival, you will notice the hotel’s lobby, restaurants, and rooms are decorated in coastal chic tones with bold nautical stripes and touches of driftwood. Try the fish tacos in the Drift Kitchen & Bar. They are the best in the area.
Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa: 3793 NE Ocean Blvd, Jensen Beach
Old Colorado Inn
If the beach is not your thing, then the Old Colorado Inn is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Stuart. The inn offers deluxe studios, spacious and luxurious suites, a charming cottage, and four spacious historic guest houses nestled in a casual tropical setting. If you stay here, it puts you within walking distance to restaurants, concerts at the Lyric Theatre & boutique shopping, plus you are just 100 yards from the St. Lucie River. Hotel & guest houses, while originally built 1890 – 1914, have recently been restored with a touch of modern elegance.
Old Colorado Inn: 211 S Colorado Ave, Stuart
“Confusion Corner”
One of Historic Downtown Stuart’s most notable tourist attractions is an intersection – known as “Confusion Corner” . You will just have to drive through this maze to experience it for yourself and you probably will several times over the days you will be here. This Downtown Discombobulated Disarray is the coming together of eight different streets as Flagler Avenue, East Ocean, and West Ocean Blvd, Colorado Avenue, A1A North & South, Dixie Highway, plus throw in a freight train or two and a passenger train reaching speeds up to 80 MPH and you have one of the most confusing intersections a driver could ever imagine. Confusion Corner drew legendary CBS newsman Charles Kuralt to Stuart in 1979 to film a segment for his popular “On the Road” series.
A visit to downtown Stuart is not complete until you’ve driven through this mind-boggling, circular attempt at navigating traffic. Be careful!
Check out a show at The Lyric Theatre:
Try and plan your getaway around a concert at the Lyric Theatre. This showplace is a historic theatre in Downtown Stuart that seats only 500 patrons. Take a look at the calendar for a show at the Lyric. There is seriously not a bad seat in the house.
The Lyric Theatre: 59 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart
Stuart Heritage Museum
I like to find out a little bit about the area that I am visiting. There is no better way to do this than to pay a visit to the Stuart Heritage Museum. The museum claims that it has the most comprehensive history of all Stuart and Martin County. Volunteers will be kind enough to tell some fascinating stories about the history of Stuart.
Stuart Heritage Museum: 161 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart
The Stuart Riverwalk
This boardwalk on the St. Lucie River takes you past the Stuart Boathouse, the Riverwalk stage, below the Roosevelt Bridge, and then under the railroad tracks. The path continues past The Sailor’s Return and on to Gilbert’s Coffee House where you can sip a cup of Joe, listen to some live music, and wait for the sunset.
Gilbert’s Coffee Bar
One of my favorite coffee shops in Stuart is Gilbert’s Coffee Bar. It is located right on the waterfront. It’s a great place to watch the sunset or get up early for a morning walk along the river with Gilbert’s as your destination. Grab a coffee and some baked goodies, then choose a spot on the deck and enjoy the morning. They also have indoor seating if that is your choice. Enjoy live music by the fire pit in the evening.
Gilbert’s Coffee Bar: 615 SW Anchorage Way, Stuart
Sunrise at Indian Riverside Park
Take a stroll along the Indian River Lagoon on the 3/4 mile scenic walking path at Indian Riverside Park. This is a popular walking path for local residents. The pathway leads around a lake and down a hill to the river. The river boardwalk is the nicest part- you walk elevated looking out on the Indian River Lagoon. It makes an excellent location to view the sunrise.
The entire walk is lovely as you walk past many water birds that call the lake home. There are shade and benches to rest and watch the wildlife.
Indian Riverside Park: 1707 NE Indian River Dr, Jensen Beach
Breakfast at Jan’s Place in Jensen Beach
A good place to go for breakfast in Martin County since you are in the area is Jan’s Place in Downtown Jensen Beach. The difficulty here is picking a choice from omelets, eggs benedict, pancakes, or French toast. The portions here are huge. Make sure you get one of their delicious muffins from the grill. You can stop by their bakery on the way out and take home a bag.
Jan’s Place: 990 NE Jensen Beach Blvd, Jensen Beach
Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center
The Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center is located on a 57-acre marine life nature center on Hutchinson Island in Stuart. It is between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. As you enter the Eco-Center you will see exhibits and galleries dedicated to protecting Florida’s coastal ecosystems. The exhibits are fun, engaging, and educational.
Programs are scheduled throughout the day including stingray and gamefish feeding. Take a hike on the nature trail that will take you to the Indian River Lagoon. Over 20 different species of fish can all be seen in Florida Oceanographic’s 750,000-gallon game fish lagoon. It’s actually a giant saltwater fish tank. We were able to see nurse sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles up close.
Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center 890 NE Ocean Blvd, Stuart
Lunch at Luna’s
Established in 1991, Luna’s Italian Cuisine often referred to as a” Stuart landmark” draws an eclectic neighborhood crowd and is located in the Historic Downtown area. With its creative mouth-watering entrees and specialty pizzas, Luna knows how to satisfy all appetites and budgets. You have to try the irresistible Garlic Knots. You can eat outside or casual dining inside.
Luna’s Italian Cuisine 49 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart
Downtown Stuart Shopping
After lunch, take the afternoon strolling the streets of Downtown Stuart. Wander in the locally owned shops and browse around. This is where you can pick up some island attire from the many fashion boutiques to wear on your vacation. Stuart is dedicated to maintaining a distinctive appearance in keeping with downtown’s “Old Florida” charm. We loved wandering in and out of the stores on Osceola Street. You can visit stores like Gumbo Limbo, Island Cotton Company, Simple Pleasures, Monkee’s, and Earthtones for many cool retro items. Cool off with a cold beer or cocktail on the water at The Boat House.
Dinner at The Gafford
After a dip in the pool and a siesta at your hotel, you are going to want to head back for some upscale dining in Historic Downtown Stuart. Look no further than The Gafford. This popular family-owned restaurant serves creative, Southern-style comfort food. The Gafford has a full bar and takes martinis to a whole new level. Instead of the typical martini, The Gafford’s are handcrafted. Bartenders infuse their cocktails with pineapple or blood orange – giving the dry martini a burst of fruity flavor. Try their famous Pineapple Martini. If you go, I recommend you make reservations.
The Gafford: 47 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart
Kilwins Chocolates & Ice Cream
If you have a sweet tooth for ice cream or homemade chocolates, then walk over to Kilwins after dinner. Kilwin’s offers more than 30 flavors of original recipe ice cream and over 100 chocolates, fudge, caramel apples, and much more. They will even cut up your caramel apple for you.
You can get some ice cream and go for an evening stroll on the Riverwalk.
Kilwins Chocolates & Ice Cream: 31 SW Osceola St, Stuart
Breakfast – Berry Fresh
My personal favorite breakfast spot is The Berry Fresh Cafe. You will enjoy made-from-scratch foods and a farm-to-table experience. They make their own delicious jellies, jams, and apple butter at Berry Fresh. The menu changes with the seasons. Try a sack of their blueberry fritters. Great food at reasonable prices and always served with a welcoming smile. It can get crowded on weekends, but that’s because their food is so good and their portions are huge. You won’t be disappointed.
Berry Fresh Cafe: 1429 SE Federal Highway, Stuart
After Breakfast: Head to The Market on Main Street
The Market on Main Street operates all year, bringing you the finest locally-made foods, crafts, arts, and entertainment the community has to offer. You can find local produce, farm eggs, bakery items, pet specialties, coffee, handmade soaps & body products, art, & music. Located in Flagler Park downtown next to the river.
Market on Main Street: 201 SW Flagler Ave, Stuart
Rock n’ Riverwalk
Rock n’ Riverwalk in Downtown Stua rt is a concert series held every Sunday at 1 p.m. Come out and set up your chairs under the shade of the trees and listen to some good ole foot-stomping music.
The House of Refuge
Step back in time with a visit to the House of Refuge Museum at Gilbert’s Bar. Constructed in 1876, this is the oldest building in Martin County. Built as one of ten refuges along the East Coast of Florida, it is the only remaining House of Refuge on the East Coast. Sailors used to be rescued from stranded ships in hurricanes or shipwrecks. Food, medicine, clothing, and a bed were provided to victims who were found after a storm. The house is just like it was in times when it was used. A great piece of history to learn about.
The beaches surrounding the structure are gorgeous. When guests come and visit, this is always one area that I take them to impress. One of the best Instagram-worthy locations in Martin County. If you time your visit to arrive about one hour before high tide, you will get a terrific show of the waves crashing against the rocks.
The House of Refuge: 301 S.E. MacArthur Boulevard, on Hutchinson Island east of Stuart, Florida
Santa Lucea Beach
There are several beaches to pick from if you are visiting Stuart. Bathtub Beach is great if you have kids, Stuart Beach is the most popular beach that many people go to, but if you are looking for a beach that is not as crowded make your destination Santa Lucea Beach. The beach is just north of the House of Refuge. Take the wooden boardwalk from the free parking lot to the beach. Be careful, and don’t park next to clumps of trees as there have been reports of thieves hiding in the forage ready to break into cars unseen. There are no lifeguards or facilities at this beach, but the views are outstanding.
Santa Lucea Beach: 55 NE McArthur Blvd. Hutchinson Island
Dinner at The Sailor’s Return
One of the most relaxing places to have dinner and an excellent choice to wrap up your three-day weekend in Stuart is a restaurant that gives you one of the best sunset views on the St. Lucie River. The Sailor’s Return offers dramatic views of the water and sunsets every night.
It was a nice evening to sit outside enjoying cocktails and dinner. I would recommend making reservations here in advance as it does get crowded on a nice evening.
The Sailor’s Return is located on Stuart’s Riverwalk, which is a perfect way to walk off a great meal and talk about what a great weekend this was. It is hard not to fall head over heels for the town of Stuart.
The Sailor’s Return: 625 SW Anchorage Way, Stuart
Downtown Stuart is the winner of the “Great Places in Florida” award by the American Planning Association for its “Old Florida” charm, laid-back coastal elegance, and friendly residents. Sometimes that small-town charm is just what you need to slow down and hit the refresh button. It is the perfect place for a three-day weekend or more.

Here are six things proposed Brightline train station could bring to Cocoa, Brevard County
Cocoa officials say having a Brightline train stop in Cocoa will bring major benefits to the city and Brevard County.
Brightline operates 32 trains a day — 16 in each direction — from early morning to late evening on the roughly 3½-hour route between Orlando International Airport and Miami. But it has no stop in Brevard.
The proposed Cocoa station would be built on a part of a 90-acre-plus site near Clearlake Road/U.S. 1 and State Road 528. Some of that land is owned by Brightline and some is owned by Cocoa.
"I'm thrilled that this station is potentially coming," Brevard Zoo CEO Keith Winston, a member of the Brevard County Tourist Development Council, said during a TDC discussion last week of the station and a proposed county grant for the project.
Another TDC member, Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina, in supporting the proposed grant, said: "This is the right thing to do and the right time for this community."
County grant clears hurdle: Tourism board recommends $5 million Brevard grant to help fund Brightline station in Cocoa
Here are six things that the station could bring to Cocoa and the rest of Brevard County:
Boosting residential, commercial development
Samantha Senger, Cocoa's director of communication and economic development, said she expects a surge in both residential and commercial development near the station, including new restaurants and hotels, creating new jobs in the area, in what will become "an urban, mixed-use destination."
Adding more tourism revenue to Space Coast
Senger said the station could generate anywhere from 78,055 to 160,961 nights a year of room rentals at hotels and vacation-rental properties. She said Brightline passengers generally are relatively high-earners, and are more inclined to spend money at more expensive hotels and restaurants.
Bringing more jobs to Cocoa
All this development could increase job opportunities in the area at hotels, restaurants and retail shops, as well as in construction jobs for these new developments. The station itself is expected to have at least 20 full-time employees.
Additional tax revenue for Cocoa, Brevard
Senger said having the station would create "a prime opportunity for development and growth surrounding the station, including the increase in tax base, not only for the city of Cocoa, but for the county, through property taxes and tourism taxes."
Creating transportation hub
The station will become a "multimodal transportation hub" for tourists that also will include buses to Port Canaveral, to hotels and to attractions; ride-hailing services; and bike-sharing.
Developing 500-space parking lot
Cocoa City Manager Stockton Whitten said initial plans call for about 5.3 acres of the site to be transferred from Brightline to the city of Cocoa for use as a 500-space parking lot. He said details on operations of the parking facility ― including how the parking revenue would be distributed — still are being worked out.
Brightline now has stops at Orlando International Airport, and in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami. Brightline carried 1.62 million passengers in 2023, and its goal is to have 4 million passengers in 2024.
The rail company announced in March that it also will have a stop in downtown Stuart, after selecting a proposal for a $60 million rail station project there. The station could open as soon as late-2026.
Brightline has plans to extend its route west from Orlando to Tampa in the future, and also could extend service north from Cocoa to Jacksonville.
