"I would just like to say, you do an amazing job, always helpful, friendly. Provide an amazing service."

Thames River Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is the fastest, most frequent and reliable fleet on the River Thames - carrying over 4 million passengers last year. Unlike most other forms of public transport, we are always reliable - the only days our river boats don’t run are Christmas and Boxing Day.

Thames River Boats

Our Thames river boats are fully equipped with comfortable seating and plenty of space. Our larger river boats all have licenced on-board bars, with a range of coffees, snacks and alcoholic drinks. They all have toilet facilities, and some even have baby changing facilities. Our Thames river buses have Metro and City AM newspapers available on board and Free Wi-Fi is available at our main piers. The experience of travelling through London on a Thames river bus is unlike any other form of travel, providing an epic experience for its users. Far more enjoyable than struggling for space on a packed London Underground tube, quicker than driving or getting the bus, and less exhausting than walking or riding your bike!

Our History

Starting in 1999 with just one boat in operation, our fleet has grown exponentially to 20 high-speed Thames river boats, offering services from all major London piers every 10-20 minutes. Our services cater for everyone from early morning commuters to night-time passengers. There are countless reasons to choose a London River Bus over any other form of transport – choose a Thames river cruise next time you need to travel through London.

Thames River Cruise featured image

Step aboard and let the gentle sway of the water carry you on an unforgettable adventure along the iconic Thames River.

A Thames River Cruise is not just a leisurely boat ride—it's an immersive experience that reveals the beating heart of London's rich history and vibrant culture.

As you glide beneath the timeless arches of its famous bridges, past the majestic landmarks that dot its banks, you'll witness the city's story unfold in a breathtaking panorama.

Join us as we delve into the allure of a Thames River Cruise, where old meets new and tradition intertwines with modernity, promising an enchanting voyage you won't soon forget.

The Best Thames River Cruises

Whether you want to book a sightseeing cruise or are looking for one of the many river-based dining experiences in London, you will find a Thames river cruise that's right for you. Here are some of the options you can choose:

Thames Rockets

You won't see too many of the sights along the river when you're traveling down the Thames in the city's fastest boats.

The Thames Rockets travel down the Thames River at 30 knots, so pack your waterproof clothing and brace yourself for a high-speed ride in a 12-meter-long fiberglass boat.  The Red Rockets speed down the exclusive High-Speed Zone, blasting music.

You'll pass Tower Bridge, the HMS Belfast, St Paul's Cathedral, and the famous Tower of London, but be warned: this isn't a sightseeing cruise! It's forty minutes of pure exhilaration. Get your tickets online.

This popular river cruise and steamboat restaurant offer dining experiences, like a lunch, dinner, or afternoon tea cruise or the famous three-course lunch and jazz cruise. You can choose between two vessels, the Glass Room and River Room.

The Glass Room has a fully stocked bar and lavish interiors designed by Tom Dixon, while the River Room boasts large windows and the largest outdoor rooftop observation deck on the Thames.

With food, drinks, and toilet facilities, you will definitely be comfortable as this river tour slowly makes its way past the many sites along the river.

It's one of the best dining cruises the Thames has to offer. Cruises depart from the Victoria Embankment, and you can book in advance online.

City Cruises

City Cruises Thames River Cruise

City cruises offer practical hop-on, hop-off boat trips throughout London. They run from Westminster, Waterloo, Greenwich Pier, and Tower Pier, with convenient stops at the city's various attractions.

North Greenwich Pier, for example, is the ideal point of departure for the Cutty Shark, Royal Observatory, and National Maritime Museum.

Tower Pier is a great spot if you would like to see Tower Bridge or the Tower of London. It's not only a great sightseeing cruise but a good option when you get sick of using the Tube.

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers stops at a whopping 24 piers between Barking Riverside Pier and Putney Pier. Services start early in the morning, and they operate until late at night.

The river is divided into the West, Central, and East zone, so make sure you have a valid ticket.

All of these hop-on hop-off river cruises are accessible to wheelchair users and parents with prams, except for Cadogan, London Bridge City, and the Wandsworth Riverside Quarter. Bring your bike along for free.

This unique sightseeing cruise uses WWII landing vehicles (painted in rubber duck yellow) and passes by all of the most beautiful sights in the city by road before splashing down into the Thames to travel past Docklands, Canary Wharf, and Greenwich.

It's not nearly as fast as some of the boats on the water today, but it's a unique experience you can't enjoy anywhere else.

The Thames River Boats will take you on a leisurely 22-mile journey from the Palace of Westminster to Hampton Court.

It's a three-hour cruise, where you can see the greener, quieter side of London along with the exciting hustle and bustle of its high-rises and busy streets.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames River Cruise

If you'd like to explore the city at your own pace, book a combination ticket for the Red Bus and the Thames River Cruise. You'll be able to view the Globe, Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace .

Why stop with the land and the sea, though? You can add a ticket for the London Eye as well, so you can see the twinkling lights of London from the sky.

Tate to Tate

Art lovers, pay attention! You can see two of the city's most iconic art institutions with the Tate to Tate Boat. You can see both the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain while passing the central London scenery.

YBA Damien Hirst has decorated the interior and exterior with his unique flair. It's the quickest and most original way to travel through the city. The Tate Modern is located in Bankside, while the Tate Britain is located in Milbank.

Both are close to popular tube stations, so you can easily see the rest of the city after paying a visit to either institution.

River Thames Cruise Prices and Reviews

What is the best london river cruise.

tourist boat thames

While our free London walking tours are a great way to see and learn a lot about the city, Thames River cruises offer a completely different perspective that you might also enjoy.

The most popular type of river cruise is a hop-on hop-off tour , allowing you to stop and get off the boat at various docks on the Thames.

Here are the top cruise services in London:

City Cruises

Uber Boat by Thames Clippers

Thames river service.

There are also special cruise services such as Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers , connecting both historic museums by boat.

Alternatively, you might also want to consider a circular loop without any stops, or perhaps a speedboat ride during the summer.

Like many cities, there are also lunch and dinner cruises available on the Thames River.

If you're in North London, you might want to consider a canal cruise around Little Venice and Camden Lock instead.

Concerned about the price? Check our list of combo packages that include a Thames River cruise for free!

Although we do our best to provide a balanced look at these services, it's important to get other perspectives, so we've also included a selection of recommendations from members of our London Travel Tips Facebook group.

Disclosure:  While our recommendations are always unbiased, we may receive a small share of sales through some of the links below at no cost to you. See the  full text .

TIP: When planning your boat tour or cruise, make sure to check out the  weather in London beforehand.

HOP-ON-HOP-OFF THAMES RIVER CRUISES

If you’re looking for a boat tour or cruise that will allow you the freedom to explore at your own pace, consider one of the following companies.

Although there aren’t many London boat services that specialize specifically in hop-on-hop-off Thames cruises, there are a few that provide the opportunity to explore London however you wish.

You can choose to purchase one single ride, a discounted return ticket, or a 24-hour travel pass with unlimited rides.

TIP: Many of these cruises are included for free or at a lower cost with any of the many London tourist attraction passes available to you.

City Cruises is probably the most well-known company offering a basic Thames River cruise. They are also the best value for the money.

City Cruises also offers speedboat tours and lunch and dinner cruises .

City Cruises offers both single tickets and a hop-on-hop-off service with 4 stops between Westminster and Greenwich. The hop-on-hop-off ticket is called the River Pass.

The River Pass is a 24-hour pass that gives you unlimited access to the river for 24 hours. There is live commentary on every journey.

For just a few pounds more, you can get a 72-hour River Pass giving you three days to use the service.

Guests can sit on the open-aired top of the boat, or inside downstairs if the London weather gets a bit wet or chilly.

TIP:  City Cruises' hop-on-hop-off service is  included for free for holders of a London Pass , a tourist attraction discount card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

TIP:  City Cruises hop-on-hop-off service is usually  included for free for holders of a London Sightseeing Pass , a tourist attraction discount card. It is also  included for free  with the purchase of a 24 or 48-hour hop-on, hop-off open-top bus ticket with Tootbus Tours.

Reviews of City Cruises

tourist boat thames

City Cruises sports a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on TripAdvisor along with mostly positive reviews.

Thousands of reviewers have given them a 5-star rating, which is a good sign.

The negative comments that have been left often mention unforeseen technical issues with the boats or scheduling software.

To avoid any issues, make sure to arrive early for your cruise and call them the day before your excursion to make sure there are no problems.

Thames Clippers is a commuter boat service that sells single-ride tickets.

But, they also offer a day ticket, called Uber Boat, that gives you unlimited hop-on, hop-off travel for one day (between 10 am and 11 pm).

The Uber Boat is valid in their Central and East Zone lines which include 18 piers including Greenwich, Tower, Westminster, and more. Boats depart every 20 minutes.

Some of the central London landmarks you can get to easily from the Uber Boat piers:

  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Tower of London
  • Tower Bridge
  • Tate Modern
  • Covent Garden
  • Trafalgar Square
  • Borough Market
  • National Gallery of Art
  • British Museum
  • Houses of Parliament
  • Churchill War Rooms
  • HMS Belfast
  • Shakespeare's Globe
  • Palace of Westminster

You can download their free audio tour (available in English, Spanish, French, and German) if you are taking the boat for sightseeing purposes.

Also, you can buy refreshments on board.

Uber Boat Ticket Prices

  • £22.10 Adults (16+)
  • £11.05 for Children (5-15)
  • This cruise is included with the London Pass .

Thames Clippers has received a 4 out of 5 stars  rating on both TripAdvisor and Viator.

Most reviews are very positive, stating that it is great value for the money. The staff is said to be courteous and helpful.

Also, guests said that the boat went just fast enough to get from point A to point B efficiently while still being slow enough to enjoy sightseeing with the downloadable app.

Read reviews here .

Thames River Services (TRS) offers a variety of guided sightseeing tours that cover several different highlights along the river.

Prices and the length of the trip vary depending on what route you select.

There are a total of ten different tours offered out of Westminster, Greenwich, and St. Katharine's.

Additionally, this boat tour company provides transportation to popular sightseeing locations such as the Thames Barrier and the Tower of London.

Guests have the option to pay for a one-way ticket or round-trip fare as well as a hop-on, hop-off ticket (through Circular Cruises).

With a 4 ½ out of 5 stars  rating on both Yelp and TripAdvisor, TRS is one of the highest-rated cruise companies in London.

A majority of reviews are very positive, but there are a few negative comments.

Complaints tend to focus on the fact that this is a sightseeing cruise, which means it might not be as speedy as other services.

If you’re looking for a quicker boat tour, you might want to consider one of the hop-on, hop-off options.

Other than these issues, most passengers love Thames River Services!

Find out more about Thames River Service Tours .

Tate to Tate by Thames Clippers

This route on the Thames Clippers service is the "RB2 Tate to Tate".

It takes visitors between the two Tate Museums: the free  Tate Modern  at Bankside Pier and Tate Britain at Millbank Pier.

Boats run every 30 minutes. It is a 20-minute ride and is within the Central Zone so this is a one-zone ticket.

The boats have both outdoor and indoor seating. As this is not a sightseeing boat there is no live commentary.

It is, however, a great way to get out onto the water and move quickly between museums and their surrounding neighborhoods.

You can purchase tickets in advance online from the Tate Shop website , or before you board a boat from a self-serve kiosk on the pier.

You can also use your  Oyster card , if you have one, upon boarding the boat.

When you purchase, look for the RB2 service, a central zone ticket price.

Check their website for prices and more information.

SPEEDBOAT RIDES

Speedboat rides on the Thames are not a budget option, but they are thrilling.

Throughout the experience, passengers will alternate between enjoying a leisurely ride along the Thames for sightseeing and a fast-paced thrill ride.

Guests are well protected with waterproof jackets, a life jacket, and goggle-style visors to withstand the thrilling wind speeds they will experience.

Thames RIB Experience

This RIB (Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat) is one of the fastest boats on the Thames, jetting visitors along the river at approximately 30 knots.

Each boat (which only holds up to 12 people) is manned by a guide who provides commentary throughout the journey.

In addition to their longer tour of the Thames, this company also manages three shorter tours of Canary Wharf, and the Tower Millennium Pier.

BUS & BOAT COMBOS

There are a lot of boat tours and cruises offered on the Thames, but none of them will show you everything worth seeing in London.

To experience more than just the river that runs through this beautiful city, you’ll want to consider combining a cruise with either walking tours or bus tours.

Thankfully, there are a lot of companies in the area that provide combo packages that include many different types of excursions.

These combination packages can be a great way to save money on all kinds of activities!

Tips From Locals and Travelers

Assuming you've read all or even just some of this post, you've had the chance to see our recommendations when it comes to Thames River cruises. However, it's important to get a variety of opinions when it comes to these types of services.

Thankfully, many members of our London Travel Tips group on Facebook will offer their own thoughts on these cruise companies, and we've included some of their most helpful suggestions here.

tourist boat thames

It can get pretty cold in London during the winter, so travelers might be surprised to learn that they actually do keep most of the Thames River cruises open all year.

While it can get cold, pretty much every company uses boats with an indoor area where you can stay warm as you enjoy the ride.

tourist boat thames

Even so, it is recommended to bundle up during the winter anyways, so you shouldn't be too cold on a river cruise boat as long as you wear warm clothing.

tourist boat thames

A lot of locals recommend using the Uber Boat, because it's a very easy and consistent service and it offers stops all along the Thames, even in Greenwich.

tourist boat thames

The reason this river cruise boat is so popular is because it's often used as transportation by people who live in London, and in fact they rely upon these boats to get to and from work.

tourist boat thames

Locals also note that you can pay for the Uber Boat by using an Oyster Card, and they offer discounts for card holders.

Even better, once you get past the Tower Bridge, the boat will speed up and allow you to get around the city much quicker!

tourist boat thames

If you're wondering whether to take a hop-on hop-off tour on the river or a dinner cruise, it's worth noting that the dinner cruise does not include any commentary.

Travelers who want to learn more about the city while cruising down the Thames might not enjoy the dinner cruise as much, but it's still a great service for anyone who wants to enjoy the view of London as the sun is setting!

tourist boat thames

Other travelers suggest skipping the dinner cruise and hopping on the speed boat. As Trish notes, these boats will wait until they are in clear waters and take off at thrilling speeds!

For even more helpful advice, you can always visit our London Travel Tips group on Facebook and ask whatever questions you might have.

"Absolutely brilliant!!!"

This was a Christmas gift for my family and it didnt disappoint! Superb service from start to finish from all the staff, from booking to being on the rib itself. Cannot praise enough. Humorous informative commentary during the slow bits, then with Chris at the helm, full throttle forward for an exciting, exhilarating blast up and down Father Thames. Twists and turns, at high speed, expertly maneuvered by the skipper, resulting in a fantastic experience THANKS GUYS

"The best boat ride ever!!!"

This was an outstanding experience with many thrills and laughs, especially the fast part it was amazing. All the people I went with thought it was AMAZING! Special regards to John our driver he made our trip 10x as fun and enjoyable, and I learnt much more about London as well. Overall an amazing experience, thank you so so much, for this outstanding experience!!!

Booked this for my birthday and was not disappointed. Ed and Ollie were great and the tour was really interesting and informative and the boat ride was brilliant, so enjoyable and fast but my group of 4 all loved it and would highly recommend. They even played me Happy Birthday which was much appreciated. Book it, you won't be disappointed

"It was a great way to celebrate a birthday!"

The whole family absolutely loved our rib boat experience on 1/6/22 - lovely lady at Millennium Pier and staff on the boat - especially since we were delayed a bit - they couldn't have been nicer and it was a great way to celebrate a birthday.

Elaine Stark

"all in all a great experience".

We were a mixed group of six aging from 13 to 70 years old. There was some nervousness on the older person part however no need to worry. Firstly great crew Ollie and John before the boat opened up really interesting commentary having work and lived in London all my life even I found things I never knew. Once they open the throttle up its brilliant. All in all a great experience

Joanna Wright

"absolutely amazing".

What a great experience, all four of us loved it. George (the guide) was very funny and gave just the right amount of commentary for the London sights you see in the "slow" bit of the trip. Then you have to hold on tight as the boat speeds its way all the way to the Thames barrier and back. Absolutely amazing!

  • Capture the golden hour: For stunning worthy for the ‘gram photos, go for sunset cruises, when the sky explodes with vibrant colors.

Thames Water manhole cover

Thames Water’s extra £1.1bn will do little to steady the sinking ship

The debt-riddled firm has updated its five-year spending plans but still needs to convince the regulator and investors

Thames Water has made a £1.1bn stab at answering the questions swirling around the troubled company, updating its five-year business plan. But it failed to address the one issue that will define its future: how it will find the funds to survive, other than trying to squeeze more money from customers.

Since its spending plan was first submitted to the regulator Ofwat in October, the government has accelerated contingency plans in case Thames goes bust, its shareholders have pulled the plug on £500m of funding and industry “bruiser” Chris Weston is now its chief executive.

On Monday, the plan – covering 2025 to 2030 – was updated with fresh statistics. The firm now promises to spend extra £1.1bn on top of the £18.7bn already pledged to tackle environmental issues. (The Guardian revealed last week that Thames was deliberating whether to add £1bn or £1.5bn to figure, and considering approaching debt markets). The company hasa £15.6bn debt mountain.

Thames was reluctant to spell out what precisely the £1.1bn will be spent on. The main reason for upping spending appears to be compliance on government statutory requirements to protect the environment amid widespread opprobrium over Thames’s sewage dumping record . The company, which uses investor funds upfront and recovers spending from customers, said it would not need to increase bills by any more than the chunky 40% rise already demanded as it was “rebalancing” its spending allocations. (Although that number excludes inflation.)

Overall, the near £20bn will be spent on various projects, from £4.7bn on improving service quality to replacing 310 miles (500km) of water mains and £640m for upgrading two sites. Other work includes efforts to improve the taste and smell of its water and reducing unplanned outages.

A curious element to the update was a further £1.9bn earmarked over the five years if Thames can find the capacity in the supply chain. With every company in the sector spending heavily to atone for the sins of the past, workers from labourers and specialists are in short supply. Thames will seek permission each year to spend chunks of this cash. If it achieves the feat, bills would rise even further, by 44%, to £627 a year by 2030. Again, government requirements – including reducing emissions and protecting assets from terrorist attacks – are the driver for the spending.

The company’s longstanding critics are suitably exercised. The Liberal Democrats say consumers should not have to foot the bill for its “shambolic failings”. The GMB union blames the previous owners ( step forward, Macquarie ) for taking “the profits in huge dividends rather than putting in the investment”. The Consumer Council for Water says the update offers “nothing to ease the fears of those already struggling to pay”.

In reality, Monday’s update is a sideshow; a regulatory hoop through which a tired Thames must drag itself. Its shareholders won’t see Thames as any more investable as a result and a painful financial restructuring remains a racing certainty .

Thames owners’ argument has been that Ofwat has been too stringent. The gap between the cash the company needs – both to run day to day and to revamp its knackered network of leaky Victorian assets – and the amount the regulator is allowing Thames to recover through bills is too wide, they argue. The updated plan is unlikely to move the dial. Nor is it clear if Thames has met Ofwat’s demand for a new turnaround plan to bring robust management and governance.

Ofwat will give its preliminary view on all water companies’ plans on 12 June, with a final decision due in December. Its allowances for the cost of capital could prove key in how investable the industry appears to its backers.

after newsletter promotion

Thames has said it has enough cash to continue operating until the summer of 2025. But a crunch may occur much sooner after Ofwat’s first salvo. If, at that point, new or existing shareholders still believe they cannot make a return over the next five-year period, then a scramble to secure its future could occur. Government plans for a temporary renationalisation continue apace .

Thames’s latest efforts will have done little to dissuade Whitehall officials of the urgency of those plans.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
