30 Secret Islands to Visit for the Ultimate Secluded Vacation

From tropical luxury to frosty serenity, there's an island to suit every traveler's taste.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

tourist spot paradise

You think of an island getaway , and certain heavy hitters likely rush to mind: Bali , Hawaii , Santorini . The big-shot isles of the world certainly have their place on any dream travel list, but there are secret, unknown islands hidden all around the globe that you can visit — if you know where to look.

Those wanting to get far off the grid can head to Rodrigues, an itty-bitty volcanic dot in the vast Indian Ocean, hundreds of nautical miles from neighbors in any direction. Mystery lovers could opt for the Nordic island of Sandön, where the foggy, forested landscape has inspired many a crime novel (perhaps you'll read one there for a real thrill). Prefer something closer to home? On North Carolina's Outer Banks , there's an island so remote, most state residents have no idea it exists.

Whatever your daydream, you'll find a destination to match it on our list of relatively unknown islands around the world.

Côn Đảo, Vietnam

The Vietnamese island of Phú Quốc might be considered a mini Phuket, but those looking to get far off the beaten path head to Côn Đảo, a little-known archipelago off Vietnam's southeastern coast. An hour-long flight from Ho Chi Minh City brings you to Côn Sơn, the largest (and only inhabited) member of the 15-island chain. Here, soaring granite cliffs border deserted beaches and crystal-blue water — imagine a tropical Amalfi Coast without the crowds. Most Côn Sơn accommodations are hostel-like budget spots, though there are a handful of boutique resorts, like the upscale Poulo Condor Boutique Resort and Spa and Six Senses Con Dao . Rent a motorbike or hire a private guide to take you to the area's most remote spots, including a 19th-century hilltop lighthouse and the spectacular Dam Tre Bay lagoon.

Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Searching for the Bali of, say, 1970? Head to Gili Trawangan, a tiny island near Lombok dotted with laidback cafés, surf schools, and dive centers. No motorized traffic is allowed here, so it's up to your own two feet to walk or bike everywhere you go. The daily agenda involves nothing more than fishing, diving, or kicking back with a cold beer at Scallywags or Le Petit Gili , a charmingly ramshackle bar and eatery. On the southern coast, Pondok Santi Estate has thatched-roof bungalows scattered about the 17 acres of tropical grounds, a one-time coconut plantation. Hop the ferry to Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on Lombok.

Pico, Portugal

When Columbus made his world-changing expedition, Pico, part of the Azores , was considered a last outpost before you, well, fell off the earth — and the island still feels almost as remote as it did in 1492. Those who make the ferry or flight are met with wines unlike anywhere else and footpaths weaving through beautifully eerie lava landscapes. In the middle of a UNESCO-designated vineyard is the PocinhoBay , where six chic basalt bungalows take in views of the Atlantic. For dinner, head to Ancoradouro to sample regional specialties such as polvo guisado (stewed octopus).

Sandön, Sweden

There's a reason Swedish crime writers Stieg Larsson and Viveca Sten chose Sandön — aka Sandhamn — as a setting for their thrillers: The island is covered in a forest of moss and pine trees, and light fog dependably shrouds the windblown beaches. Check in to the modern Sands Hotell or the sweet eight-room Missionshuset Bed & Breakfast , both in the island's only village. At Sandhamns Värdshus , a historic restaurant (open seasonally) and pub (open year-round), feast on classic Swedish dishes such as house-marinated herring and pytt i panna, a traditional hash with fried egg and beets. Rent a mountain bike from Sandhamnsguiderna and pedal through the forest to Trouville, Sandön's best stretch of sand.

Scrub Island, British Virgin Islands

The name may suggest otherwise, but a trip here hardly constitutes roughing it. Once a pit stop for explorers, this island was virtually uninhabited for decades — until the luxe Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina opened its doors. What to expect? Spacious hillside villas, sea kayaking, and island-hopping day trips. Hike to the top of the island for an unforgettable sunrise.

Skopelos, Greece

An hour-long ferry ride from Skiathos (or about 20 minutes on a high-speed boat), the island of Skopelos is so picture-perfect (hidden coves, charming tavernas, hundreds of Byzantine-era churches) that Hollywood chose its Kastani Beach as a set for "Mamma Mia." Nearly every room at the seasonal Adrina Resort & Spa and its sister property Adrina Beach Hotel look out onto the turquoise Aegean. After a dinner of lobster pasta and slow-cooked lamb kleftiko at waterfront The Muses , walk along the beach-hugging road to the open-air Mercurius Cocktail Bar (open Easter through September) or to the hilltop Anatoli for ouzo and live rebetiko music.

Caye Caulker, Belize

There's nary a traffic light on this colorful, laidback island — a five-mile strip of land that's barely a 10-minute flight from Belize City. Water activities are the name of the game here: Snorkel among nurse sharks and stingrays or scuba dive in the underwater caves of Blue Hole. Aboveground, try the meat pies and rum cake baked daily at Reina's , or whole grilled lobster and jerk chicken at Dee N D's , a Caribbean barbecue spot right on the water. On the eastern side of the caye, the beachfront Colinda Cabanas has 14 brightly painted suites and cabanas, all with kitchens and outdoor space, tucked amid the palms and almond trees.

Flatey, Iceland

Don't expect to see much night sky here: In the summer, daylight shines for up to 21 hours on this one-mile, car-free hideaway in Breiðafjörður Bay. Lush meadows, multicolored timber houses, and incredible birdlife dot the scenery, and the mainland's Snæfellsjökull volcano is always within eyeshot. In town, Hotel Flatey stays true to simple Scandinavian design (blond-wood furniture, whitewashed walls), and the downstairs restaurant is a superb spot for local, fresh, seafood-centric fare. Swing by Iceland's oldest (and smallest) library, built in 1864.

Gozo, Malta

Rolling hills, crumbling castle walls, and a Bronze Age fortress are some of the most endearing features on Gozo. Check in to the upscale Hotel Ta' Cenc & Spa overlooking the sea from the island's highest point. From there, it's a short drive to rugged Dwejra Bay, where you can take a dip and gaze upon the famous limestone arch. Head to the ancient village of Xagħra for a hearty meal of fish soup, pasta with rabbit sauce, and fig ice cream at Oleander Restaurant . Bring home handblown objéts d'art from Gozo Glass .

Swaraj Dweep, India

Bone-white beaches and crystalline water make Swaraj Dweep, also known as Havelock Island, perhaps the most appealing of the 500-odd islands and atolls in India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Make a cottage at the much-loved SeaShell Havelock your island crash pad for days of snorkeling, diving, glass-bottom boating, and jungle trekking. Ocean breezes and down-home cooking take center stage at Anju Coco , a roadside seafood shack and breakfast spot. The mellow atmosphere and 28-page menu require at least one return visit .

Rodrigues, Mauritius

With 3,300 miles of Indian Ocean between it and Perth, the nearest civilization to the east, this fish-shaped island is about as remote as it gets. Verdant valleys, numerous islets, and shallow lagoon waters surrounding the island make Rodrigues heaven for hikers, kite surfers, and water lovers. Shack up in one of the island's Creole-style guesthouses, like the three-room Case Corail or the more upscale Domaine de la Paix . For freshly caught seafood, don't miss the down-to-earth Le Marlin Bleu . Spot gigantic Aldabra tortoises and tropical birds at the François Leguat Reserve before descending into limestone caverns (a welcome respite from the sun) .

Great Barrier Island, New Zealand

At 110 square miles, "The Barrier" is one of the largest islands off the Kiwi coast, but it's also one of the most pristine. Spend your days hiking through dense kauri woods or exploring jagged inlets. Then refuel over locally caught seafood at Currach Irish Pub . The four-bedroom, glass-walled Oruawharo Beach House has spectacular views of Oruawharo Bay; smaller accommodations on the property include a cabin and cottage. Take a scenic stroll to soak in the Kaitoke Hot Springs .

Pulau Mabul, Malaysia

Diving enthusiasts flock to Pulau Mabul, off the southeastern coast of Malaysia, where the marine life is on par with the Galápagos — native sea moths, bobtail squids, and the elusive paintpot cuttlefish are just a few of the inhabitants. Sleep over the sea at Mabul Water Bungalows , which offers dive packages and has an on-site spa. For local souvenirs, head to Tawau village's Sunday market in nearby Sabah.

Jicaro Island, Nicaragua

You may experience cognitive dissonance upon arriving at Jicaro Island . There are palm trees and thatched roofs, even a shadowy volcano in the distance, but the air has none of the tropical tang you'd expect, and there are no waves or powdery shores. That's because Jicaro is located on Lake Nicaragua (Lago Cocibolca), a freshwater lake near the country's western edge. Ten to 20 minutes by boat from the colonial town of Granada, the island is home to seven luxury treehouse casitas , stylish with their slatted façades and mosquito-netted beds, that are crafted entirely from Nicaraguan timber, salvaged from trees downed in storms. The food is organic and locally sourced, solar power heats the water, and there's a private pool for leisurely afternoons. Spend an afternoon hiking around the cloud forest on the upper slopes of the nearby volcano, Mombacho. You might just zipline down.

Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile

A one-hour flight west of Santiago, this rugged isle earned its fame from the 18th-century sailor Alexander Selkirk, whose wild spell as a castaway here inspired the novel "Robinson Crusoe." The aura of adventure still endures (there's even a rumor of buried treasure). Travelers arrive on a seven-seater plane, then take an hour, 30-minute boat ride to the town of San Juan Bautista. The best place to stay is perhaps in one of the 15 rooms at the Crusoe Island Lodge . The hotel will organize scuba dives, on which you might see a centuries-old shipwreck.

Colonsay, Scotland

A two-hour, 20-minute ferry ride from the west-coast whisky town of Oban takes you to this distant Hebridean island. Sheep far outnumber people, and those who have made the wildflower-carpeted island home are the sort of characters who would have inspired Robert Burns. Lay your head in the 1750-built Colonsay Hotel , a family-owned, nine-room Georgian inn with white pebble-dashed walls, sloping slate roofs, and spare furnishings. Meet all the locals at the village hall, where, in the summer, the weekly ceilidh dance is as authentic a gathering as you'll find in the British Isles.

Inis Meáin, Ireland

The pleasures of Inis Meáin are simple: a walk along the coast to the thunder of Atlantic swells, a tableau of fissured limestone that glimmers in the mist, and a mile-and-a-half cliff walk with the Cliffs of Moher as your backdrop. You can get the full experience with a stay in one of Inis Meáin's stone-walled suites . For an extra fee, you can add meals to your stay. Historically, this immersive hotel has served locally caught seafood and homegrown vegetables.

La Maddalena, Sardinia

Think you can't find Caribbean-blue waters in the middle of Europe? Set your sights on La Maddalena, an unassuming understudy to some of Italy's splashier islands, like Capri. A 15-minute ferry ride from the northern coast of Sardinia, La Maddelena spoils its visitors with pristine beaches, rare birds, and hidden coves. The sea-facing terrace at Hotel Excelsior is a perfect perch for watching the ferries ply the teal waters. Cala Coticcio, a short drive from La Maddalena's city center on the neighboring island of Caprera, is said to be one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. There, you can tour the Compendio Garibaldino, where the 19th-century politico Giuseppe Garibaldi lived.

Sir Bani Yas Island, United Arab Emirates

The roaring traffic sounds of Abu Dhabi, about 112 miles to the east, are replaced by the sound of lapping waves on this cluster of Arabian Gulf islands. Sir Bani Yas — with its wadis (dry riverbeds), mangroves, and Christian monastery excavation site — is the only island with overnight facilities of any sort. Luckily, those accommodations are provided by Anantara, a luxurious resort brand with a small collection of Sir Bani Yas hotels. The original, Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara , includes 64 chic rooms and an opulent spa.

Fogo Island, Newfoundland

This may be the last place you'd expect to find an artistic awakening — it's a fishing community off Newfoundland's northeastern coast marked by craggy shores and miles of blissful nothingness. But thanks to residents like artist Elísabet Gunnarsdóttir, social entrepreneur Zita Cobb, and architect Todd Saunders, the secluded island has become a cultural destination. The trio is behind Fogo Island Arts , a series of four artists' studios. Rent a car from mainland Newfoundland to tour the uber-contemporary structures or hike along the 4.5-mile Turpin's Trail, whose gentle path goes beside rocky coastline and grassy meadows (keep an eye out for grazing caribou). Regain your strength on a vintage school chair at Bangbelly Cafe (open seasonally) with a homemade cod cake sandwich. Feel like you're in a fantasy film at the architecturally stunning Fogo Island Inn , a modern, sustainable spaceship of a boutique hotel at the edge of the Atlantic.

Lummi Island, Washington

Nature enthusiasts and locavores love this nine-square-mile oasis full of working farms and verdant fields on Puget Sound. Immerse yourself in the Pacific Northwest lushness with a hike through any four of the nature preserves maintained by Lummi Island Heritage Trust. The 1.6-mile hike through Baker Preserve, specifically, will reward you with sweeping views of Rosario Strait and the San Juan Islands. Don't miss the chance to visit Michael Oppenheimer's Windy Hill Art sculpture park .

Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

Vancouver Island may hog the spotlight, but neighboring Salt Spring is impossibly picturesque (imagine rocky shores, rolling pastures, and sky-high oak trees). Cheesemakers, vintners, and an eclectic group of artists and craftspeople live here year-round. It's precisely that eco-artist vibe that prompted Michael Ableman and Jeanne-Marie Herman to open the sustainable Foxglove Farm , whose three guest rooms (a cottage, a cabin, and a log home) have views of Maxwell Lake. The seasonal Saturday farmers' market at nearby Centennial Park showcases works by potters, jewelers, soapmakers, and food producers.

Southport Island, Maine

Boothbay Harbor ranks as one of the busiest tourist havens on Maine's MidCoast, but nearby Southport Island, accessible by a single swing bridge, has a more low-key vibe with old Cape Cod-style colonial houses, small country stores, and winding roads. On the way to town, you'll spot the decades-old Robinson's Wharf , one of the state's most revered seafood shacks, serving fresh lobster, shrimp, and oysters. Snag a table on the dock facing Townsend Gut. A 20-minute walk away, Ocean Gate Resort has canoes and kayaks (free to guests) for self-paddling tours of the Gut's sheltered waters. Toward the island's far end, the 40-room, oceanfront Newagen Seaside Inn , with clapboard cottages and water-facing hotel rooms, abuts a quaint fishing harbor. This is classic Maine at its best. Plan a picnic on Southport Beach, overlooking Hendricks Head lighthouse.

Islas del Rosario, Colombia

Cartagena may be a Latin American travel hotspot, but consider venturing off the coast to the Islas del Rosario — a chain of mostly uninhabited islands that are home to mangroves, beaches, and the country's largest coral reef. Stay at the tropical-chic Hotel San Pedro de Majagua on Isla Grande. There, you'll find 17 white-on-white rooms, panoramic Caribbean views, and a restaurant where you might dine on fresh-caught snapper, grilled whole. Snorkel and dive the glittering waters, where you can spot butterflyfish, sea turtles, and hundreds of other tropical species. After the sun sets, take a boat or an evening walk to the Enchanted Lagoon, on the other side of the island, to see thousands of bioluminescent plankton twinkling in the night.

La Gomera, Spain

Not even an hour ferry ride from its buzzy big sister, Tenerife, tiny La Gomera is as peaceful as can be. The lushly green Canary Island is a haven for trekkers, with more than 300 miles of walking trails lacing over mountains and misty, subtropical rainforest. When you've hiked to your heart's (or quads') content, get thee to the water. Paddle around the teal waters of pretty, sun-drenched Playa de Santiago in a kayak, or book a boat tour in hopes of spotting pilot whales, dolphins, and other La Gomera underwater residents. The clifftop Hotel Jardín Tecina has far more frills than your average La Gomera hotel, plus head-spinning views of the Atlantic. Plan for at least one meal at the beach-shack-like La Chalana , a local fave serving a daily catch and Canarian specialties. If you need a post-lunch pick-me-up, a barraquito (a Canary Islands coffee drink with condensed milk, lemon rind, and cinnamon — con o sin licor) should do the trick .

Filicudi, Sicily

Filicudi (along with farther-flung Alicudi) is the least-developed outpost in Sicily's Aeolian Island chain. Its sheer remoteness and spectacular volcanic landscape have enticed in-the-know Italians for ages. Explore Filicudi's quaint fishing villages and hiking trails (prepare for thrilling sea views) by foot; when you're ready to take your sea legs out for a spin, there are jewel-toned coves, craggy grottoes, and pebble beaches for swimming, snorkeling, boating, and diving. Cap off your day with seafood hauled in from the surrounding Tyrrhenian Sea and a bottle of natural Aeolian wine. On a sunny afternoon, find a palapa-covered sunbed (and a cold bottle of Messina) at Lido La Sirena to call your own.

Iriomote Island, Japan

When it comes to Japanese scenery, coral reefs and pineapple fields are probably not part of your vision. But Japan's Okinawa prefecture is home to tropical islands straight out of a castaway fantasy, including one of Japan's best-kept secrets, the jungle-clad Iriomote. This hidden destination has stunning waterfalls, mangrove forests, and the kind of coastline you'd expect from southern Thailand — minus the throngs of fellow sunseekers. Beaches like Ida no Hama are startlingly pretty, with shimmering clear shallows and lush vegetation all around. After a day of snorkeling, diving, and paddleboarding, retire to Pension Hoshinosuna , a humble inn with great views over the bay and offshore islands. Join a guided tour for a day of kayaking through the mangroves followed by hiking through the jungle up to Pinaisara Falls, a dramatic waterfall cutting through the wilderness .

Portsmouth, North Carolina

The Outer Banks is a major vacation destination, yet one of its islands is so secluded, even many North Carolinians have never heard of it: Portsmouth, only accessible by ferry or private boat. Visitors dock in Portsmouth village, a once-thriving seafaring port dating to the 1700s, now a ghost town with a cluster of historic buildings — the post office-slash-general store and a one-room schoolhouse — to check out as you please. Beyond the village, miles of pure coastal wilderness await. Sand paths wind past grassy salt marshes, wispy evergreen shrubs, and sky-blue inlets. Natural dunes sling low over wide-open, empty, and amazingly pristine beaches. Look for shells and sea snails, get hypnotized by the powerful Atlantic waves, or pitch a tent right on the sand. On a clear evening, you're in for the starriest night of your life. When you're ready to reenter society, catch the passenger ferry to Ocracoke and set up shop with fried oysters and hush puppies on the roof deck of Howard's Pub , open seasonally .

Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

Drifting in an aqua lagoon in the Zanzibar archipelago, Mnemba is nothing short of an island paradise. The petite island is occupied by andBeyond Mnemba Island , a boutique resort with all the tropical trimmings you'd want from an Indian Ocean hideaway: a dive center, a handful of rustic, open-air bungalows, and wide swaths of stunning white-sand beach encircling a forested interior. The sparkling waters are perfect for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling over coral reefs, and, at sunset, cruising on the resort's dhow, a traditional Arabic sailboat. Learn about Zanzibar's legendary spices on a tour of Tangawizi , a working spice plantation and cooking school outside of Stone Town .

Boa Vista, Cape Verde

All Cape Verde islands have incredible coastlines, but the vast white- and golden-sand beaches of Boa Vista are arguably the archipelago's best. Kiteboarders and windsurfers flock here (as well as neighboring Sal) to take advantage of the sweeping trade winds from Africa. Jeep and quad-bike outfitters stand at the ready for zipping around the shore and the giant windswept desert dunes that look like they're from another planet. Scoop up locally made pottery in the town of Rabil.

One of the smallest countries in the world, Tuvalu is comprised of nine low-lying islands featuring unspoiled white sand beaches, abundant marine life and a laid-back atmosphere. Most of your days here will be spent snorkeling, scuba diving or simply lounging on the beach. However, remember to save time for visiting the Tuvalu Post, which is home to a wide collection of rare decades-old stamps, and checking out the destination's World War II wreckage sites. Despite its beauty, Tuvalu is off many travelers' radars, meaning you won't have to fight hordes of tourists for a spot on the sand.

Newlyweds who want to see a lesser-known side of French Polynesia should consider honeymooning on Moorea. This awe-inspiring island features the same kind of striking natural wonders and romantic accommodations couples will find on Bora Bora, but with a more relaxed atmosphere and lower price tags. What's more, Moorea only sits 10 miles away from Tahiti, making it easy to reach from French Polynesia's main international airport or by ferry. Once travelers arrive on the island, they'll discover eight towering mountains and two beautiful bays, plus several noteworthy attractions, including the Moorea Dolphin Center and Temae Beach.

tourist spot paradise

Top activities in Vanuatu include hiking to the summit of Mount Yasur (an active volcano), swimming in the Blue Lagoon and snorkeling Mystery Island's crystal-clear waters.

tourist spot paradise

Despite its small size, this group of 15 islands midway between New Zealand and Hawaii offers something for everyone. Popular activities range from snorkeling excursions and hikes to waterfalls to village tours. The striking white sand beaches on Rarotonga and Aitutaki also can't be missed. After exploring, savor local staples like ika mata (marinated raw fish) and poke (a pudding-like dish made with tropical fruit) at a market. Meanwhile, make sure to attend an island night celebration, which combines traditional dancing with an umukai (a feast prepared in an underground oven). Because the Cook Islands are associated with New Zealand, visitors can easily fly here from Auckland.

But don't let the French Polynesian island's hustle and bustle fool you: Tahiti also boasts plenty of rushing waterfalls, towering mountains and pristine beaches to set the scene for your relaxing island getaway. Once you've gotten your fill of sightseeing, head to a local market for fresh produce or seafood before retiring to a fale (a rustic beachfront accommodation) for the night.

tourist spot paradise

Thanks to its abundance of untouched natural wonders and lack of traditional accommodations, the Solomon Islands are an ideal destination for eco-tourists. Visitors can explore dense jungles, surf uncrowded waves and even climb a dormant volcano. The country was also a battle site during World War II, so history buffs can find historic relics like abandoned tanks and amphibious vehicles scattered throughout the islands. But perhaps the most unique sights are those found in the islands' surrounding waters. Divers from around the world flock here to see the Solomon Islands' sunken WWII seaplanes, submarines and oil tankers.

Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis, a luxury hotel, aquarium, water park, and entertainment complex is one of the top places to visit in The Bahamas. The Atlantis Resort designers have gone to great lengths to recreate this fantasy world. Decorations reflect real and mythical creatures: seahorses, helmeted domes, and giant bronze doors.

The marine habitat is one of the largest outdoor aquariums in the world . It specializes in native tropical species, and the tanks incorporate the ruins and sculptures of Atlantis.

Children and adults alike will love the Aquaventure water park . Highlights include the Leap of Faith , which plunges riders down an 18-meter drop through a tunnel submerged in a shark-filled lagoon, and the less adventurous can float around the park on a lazy river ride, over waves and rolling rapids. Spending a day here is one of the most popular things to do in The Bahamas .

Animal lovers can also swim with dolphins or join the Ultimate Trainer for a Day program at the resort's Dolphin Cay .

Atlantis is one of the best resorts in The Bahamas, and with its splashy attractions and colorful motifs, it rivals the top theme resorts in Las Vegas.

Cable Beach

Despite all the resorts lining this iconic stretch of coastline, Cable Beach still manages to conjure the feel of a classic Caribbean beach. Soft white sand stretches to turquoise water, and sun loungers beckon along the shore, making this one of the best places to visit in Nassau. The clear waters are also safe for swimming.

Staying at one of the resorts here puts you steps from the freshly-raked sand — the Meliá Nassau Beach Hotel , Breezes , and Sandals Royal Bahamian all rim the sun-splashed shore. But even if you're not staying at one of the resorts, the beach is open to the public, so you can still spend a day here relaxing by the sea.

Blue Lagoon Island

Also known as Salt Cay, Blue Lagoon Island is a popular place to visit in Nassau on a cruise. This fun-packed private island lies about five kilometers from Nassau and offers a range of water sports, as well as close-up encounters with dolphins and sea lions.

At the island's three-acre marine mammal facility, animal lovers can participate in the Dolphin Encounters program to learn all about these friendly mammals and interact with them under the careful watch of professional trainers.

Day-trippers can also tour the island on Segways, relax in hammocks along the palm-lined beach, and snorkel and swim in the lagoon. Children will love the water park, packed with inflatable toys.

Queen's Staircase

Cut by slaves into solid limestone in the late 18th century, the 66 steps known as the Queen's Staircase gave troops protected access to Fort Fincastle. More than a century later, the staircase was named to honor Queen Victoria and her role in abolishing slavery in The Bahamas.

Today, visitors can appreciate this amazing feat of construction as they climb the steep staircase, now flanked by a cooling cascade and tropical foliage.

The stairs lead to Fort Fincastle , the highest point on the island. Built by Lord Dunmore in 1793, the fort is shaped like the bow of a boat and affords panoramic views of Nassau and the ocean beyond.

Flamingos at the Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre

Best known as the home of the marching flamingos, the Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre is set on four acres of tropical gardens. The flamingos entertain visitors by marching in formation to commands.

A fun spot to bring the whole family, this zoo specializes in the conservation of Caribbean species, including the endangered Bahama parrot and several species of iguanas.

Children love the petting zoo and hand-feeding the friendly rainbow lorikeets. This is a great thing to do in Nassau with kids if you want a break from the beach.

Snorkeling in Nassau

Clifton Heritage National Park offers a little something for everyone: history, culture, natural beauty — and tranquility.

Take a guided tour along the trails and soak up some history. Learn about the Lucayans, the Loyalists, and the Africans — three important cultures that make The Bahamas such a fascinating destination — and explore the remnants of villages, plantations, and slave quarters. You'll even find a medicinal garden here.

Wander the winding trails through different tropical ecosystems, from coastal wetlands and rocky cliffs to dunes, coral reefs, and an inviting slice of beach. Along the way, keep a look out for wading birds, seabirds, and songbirds.

Better still, don your snorkel gear and get out in the water. You can follow an underwater snorkel trail , admire the coral reef sculpture garden , and even see sunken film wrecks — the park was the setting for Jaws and other films.

How to Visit: Clifton Heritage National Park sits on the western tip of New Providence Island, about a 25-minute drive from Nassau. Many visitors book a guided tour here, but you can also visit on your own. Note, though, that there is an entry fee and a separate fee for snorkeling — bring your own snorkel gear if you want to save money renting it.

Cabbage Beach

If you're hoping to sit back, relax, and soak up the rays on a pristine beach, you'll love Cabbage Beach. The most popular beach on Paradise Island , this soft, white gem is an ideal place to visit for families looking to build sandcastles and bury each other in the sand.

That said, the surf can get quite rough, so you'll want to pay extra close attention if you're traveling with little ones. While playing in the sand is a great thing to do with the family, this isn't the most kid-friendly beach for swimming.

You can rent beach chairs or umbrellas on-site , but be prepared to pay a hefty sum for their use. This seems to be par for the course on Nassau, though, so the high prices for rentals at Cabbage Beach are not much different than other area beaches.

Some vendors can be bargained down, and you should take a look at their gear before you use it. Some tourists have been scammed into less-than-stellar equipment (i.e. umbrellas filled with holes). Better yet, if you can bring your own gear, you'll have a stress-free, cheap visit to the beach.

Insider's tip: The closer you get to Atlantis, the nicer the beach. The beach vendors can be quite pushy, and not all are honest, so beware. Also, there are no bathrooms on-site.

Pirates of Nassau Museum | Darryl Brooks / Shutterstock.com

Though a little light on historical exhibits, Pirates of Nassau Museum is a wonderful way for children to learn more about Nassau's seafaring days.

Visitors to the museum can explore a replica of the pirate ship Revenge and the shanty town of Nassau, see pirate paraphernalia, and interact with theatrical pirate hosts. Exhibits also cover the infamous Blackbeard and women pirates.

This is a great thing to do for a couple of hours with the whole family, especially on a rainy day.

Address: King and George Streets, Nassau

Marina Village on Paradise Island

Those hoping to practice a little retail therapy while on a Bahamian vacation should schedule time to explore Marina Village on Paradise Island. Colorful buildings welcome shoppers to examine the wares behind their pretty, pastel façades. Conveniently located, the village lies a mere three-minute walk from Atlantis.

Here, you'll find everything from beach wear to jewelry to touristy kitsch. And once you've worked up an appetite from all that shopping, you can sit down to enjoy a meal at one of the many Marina Village Restaurants. Whether you're hoping to enjoy a laid-back, family-style Italian meal or tasty Bahamian fare at the upscale Café Martinique, your taste buds will be thrilled. Don't forget to leave room for ice cream!

When you aren't shopping or eating, be sure to enjoy the endless fun and entertainment on offer. Junkanoo parades, live music, and shows of all kinds are performed throughout the year. Then, make time to ogle the luxury yachts parked at the surrounding docks.

Insider's Tip: If you're a fan of hand-made gifts, visit Art Walk at Marina Village. It runs from 12 to 7pm on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.

Nassau Straw Market

After the decline of the sponging industry in the mid 1940s, Bahamian women began braiding and weaving the leaves of palm trees and sisal plants into baskets and fishing traps as a way to boost their income. Today, this tradition continues at the Straw Market in Nassau.

Looking for some Bahamian souvenirs? You can buy woven items such as hats, mats, and baskets, as well as fine wooden carvings, colorful fabrics, and many other souvenirs. The historic market building was destroyed by fire in September 2001, but the market continues and has become a downtown institution.

Address: Downtown Bay Street, Nassau

National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

Housed in the lovingly restored Villa Doyle, a large historic Neoclassical mansion, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is the most important art institution in the country.

The oldest section, looking toward the harbor to the north, was built in the 1860s by William Henry Doyle, Chief Justice of The Bahamas. The southern wing was added in the 1920s by Sir Walter K. Moore.

The impressive collection includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and textiles from Bahamian artists, spanning the early 20th century to the present day.

Address: Villa Doyle, West and West Hill Street, Nassau

Government House

Built in 1801 and renovated after the 1929 hurricane, this magnificent conch-pink mansion on top of Mount Fitzwilliam is the official residence of the Governor General of The Bahamas.

Constructed of stone and supported by ionic columns, the structure is an impressive example of Georgian Colonial architecture. A statue of Christopher Columbus, dating from 1830, stands at the entrance. Today, visitors can stroll around the complex and enjoy beautiful views of the bay and Paradise Island.

Children will enjoy watching the changing of the guard ceremony , which takes place at Government House twice a month.

Address: Duke Street, Nassau

Versailles Gardens, Paradise Island

If money is no object, book a stay at the swanky The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas . Home to luxurious rooms, five-star amenities, and delectable restaurants, this lavish resort is a treat for all your senses. This high-end luxury resort's most famous attribute is the beautiful Versailles Gardens.

An immaculately landscaped, terraced pathway peppered with statues and stone steps leads visitors to the gardens' highlight: a collection of marble cloisters boasting a stunning view of the harbor. In the center stands a marble statue named Silence , which was created in 1928 by artist, Sir William Reid Dick.

Lower down on the path, towards the resort's main pool, you'll find the equally impressive statue, The Reclining Venus , which was sculpted by Italian master Lorenzo Bartolini in 1829.

Insider's Tip: Look closely in the garden's pools and fountains and you might spy a turtle or two. Also, enjoy a meal while on the property, so you can park easily at the resort.

Aerial view of Downtown and Bay Street

A bustling mix of shops and restaurants, Downtown and Bay Street offers some of the best duty-free shopping in Nassau. Cruise ship passengers flock here to buy jewelry, T-shirts, and perfume, and you'll also find the straw market and Pirates of Nassau Museum along this strip.

Street hawkers can be aggressive here, especially when a wave of tourists alights from a cruise ship, but a firm "no thank you" usually does the trick.

Nassau Downtown - Floor plan map

For first time visitors to Nassau, the best places to stay for sightseeing are on Paradise Island near Atlantis and along the white sands of Cable Beach. Downtown Nassau is also packed with attractions, such as the straw market, duty free shops, and the National Art Gallery. Here are some highly rated hotels in these areas:

Luxury Hotels:

  • On Paradise Island, The Cove at Atlantis is the most luxurious tower of the Atlantis Resort. Guests here score entry to an exclusive adults-only pool and beach club, as well as all the other fun Atlantis attractions.
  • For couples who prefer to stay on famed Cable Beach, Sandals Royal Bahamian is a prime pick, with a private island and all-inclusive rates. This adults-only resort also boasts an award-winning spa.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • Adjacent to the Atlantis, the Comfort Suites is one of the most popular mid-range hotels on Paradise Island, thanks to its good-value rates that include entry into the Atlantis attractions.
  • Right on Cable Beach, the all-inclusive Breezes Resort and Spa Bahamas is a great option for those seeking a little sun, sand, and sea without small children - only kids 14 years and older are allowed.
  • Tourists visiting Nassau for the popular Atlantis water park, Aquaventure, are right near all the action at The Beach at Atlantis , the "Value" tower of the resort.

Budget Hotels:

  • In The Bahamas, even budget hotels can be pricier than travelers expect, but the Bay View Suites Paradise Island is convenient for travelers who want to self cater and is only a 10-minute walk from Atlantis.
  • In a great central location, El Greco Hotel offers a pool and basic rooms across from the beach in town.

Sailing & Snorkeling in Nassau:

  • Nassau is all about life underwater, as well as on land, and a great way to explore this subterranean world is on a Nassau Sail and Snorkel Tour . Sail out to a fish-rich reef on a luxury catamaran and spend your time snorkeling among the colorful fish and coral. All your snorkeling gear, boat transportation, and refreshments are included on this fun three-and-a-half hour tour.

Day Trips from Nassau:

  • From Nassau, a day trip tour is a convenient and stress-free way to visit some of the smaller Out Islands without worrying about boat rental and navigating your way in unfamiliar waters. The Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day from Nassau whisks you to Salt Cay, where you are invited to lounge on the soft sand, visit the marine park for a close up view of dolphins and sea lions, and enjoy a freshly grilled lunch.
  • The six-hour Rose Island Day Trip is another must-do activity. It offers you a choice of activities, from basking on the beach of this beautiful island to group activities such as beach volleyball and snorkeling in the clear waters, or a combination of these options. All equipment is provided, as well as a delicious buffet lunch.
  • We're betting you've never had a chance to swim with pigs before. If we're right, this is something you must add to your to-do list. Check it off with an uber fun Morning Pig Encounter to Rose Island. This four-hour tour includes a 30-minute bus ride to the boat that will take you another 25 minutes to the aptly named Da Pig Beach . Here, you'll find your fun, pink, four-legged swimming partners.

The 13 Best and Hidden Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

Looking for the best things to do in Surfers Paradise & the Gold Coast!? Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Surfers Paradise is the gateway to Queensland’s stunning coasts, and as the name suggests, the beaches are fit for any surfer with rolling waves, golden beaches lined with palm trees and a relatively mellow vibe.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

With nature one of the main reasons people visit the Gold Coast, this coastal community is known for being the entertainment capital of Australia. It features a mad mix of theme parks, cabaret shows, crazy gaming centers, and an epic Brisbane music festival , all bound to blow your mind.

There are so many elements that make Surfers Paradise fantastic. While I agree it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and often gets a bad reputation but if we push past those things, it’s really not so bad after all. What more do you want than surf, sand and sweet vibes? Surfers Paradise is a hub for adventure, you’ve just got to step outside and seek it!

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

1) Go Surfing at a Surfers Paradise Beach

If you don’t love the ocean then why are you even in Surfers Paradise? The Gold Coast is home to a multitude of stunning beaches starting from the New South Wales border. They stretch all the way to Stradbroke Island so there will never be a day where the swell is bad.

If you don’t have a surfboard and are keen to give surfing a go, you’ll find many surf shops renting out boards on the beach fronts. These are available at reasonable prices and some offer lessons for anyone who wants to learn to surf.

With so many options, you may find it hard to choose a Surfers Paradise beach to catch a wave at. Worry not, here are a few places to wax up the board and get surfing. Just remember to swim between the red and yellow flags.

  • Burleigh Heads Beach – with an assortment of waves ranging from big to small, Burleigh Heads Beach is one of my favorites and the locals favorite especially when a swell sets in.
  • Miami – not the Miami in Florida but the Miami of the Gold Coast is an open stretch of coastline suitable for everyone, even a beginner.
  • Mermaid Beach – is a place I wish mermaids were, instead there are some nice waves in a not-so-busy part of the Gold Coast.
  • Kurrawa – this Surfers Paradise beach is popular with surf boats, meaning the waves are bound to be pumping.
  • Snapper Rocks – a place not cut for the amateurs, a place for the professionals but that never stopped a keen grom from carving up a few waves.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

2) Visit Burleigh Heads

South of Surfers Paradise is a piece of paradise and a local favorite, Burleigh Heads . Out of all the places I go when on the Gold Coast, Burleigh Heads always tops the list. Why? Burleigh Heads National Park is stunning and often untouched by those who visit the area.

With a loop track starting at the end of Julia Street North, the Ocean View Track trails through thick bushland prickled with Pandanus palms, past Tallebudgera Creek and back up to Tumgun Lookout for spectacular views of the sea and down to Currumbin.

Burleigh Heads National Park is an incredible spot for catching a scenic Gold Coast sunrise or watching the early morning surfers. Don’t forget to grab a coffee from Nook Espresso, a hole in the wall style café with a mean brew.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

3) Catch a ferry to South Stradbroke Island

No visit to the Gold Coast is complete without a day or two spent on the shores of South Stradbroke Island or Straddie to the locals.

South Stradbroke Island is situated about a 30-minute drive from Surfers Paradise to the north. However, you can get a taxi across to Straddie at various points throughout Surfers Paradise.

Not to get you confused, but Stradbroke Island is broken up into two islands, the north and south. The north island is closer to Brisbane, while the south island is closer to Surfers Paradise.

South Straddie is blessed with natural surroundings like idyllic fishing holes, rock pools, hidden surf spots, and beautiful rainforests. South Straddie is your epic dose of nature and a great way to spend on the stunning Gold Coast.

4) Theme Park Madness

The Gold Coast is a mecca for theme parks and one of the first things you’ll notice when zooming along the Gold Coast Highway.

Here’s a solid list of all the theme parks that you can visit, maybe not all in one day…

  • Wet ‘N’ Wild – is complete with wave pools, waterslides and beaches to sunbathe on.
  • Movie World – is kind of like a mini Universal Studios with epic rollercoasters, DC Comic style parades and movie set stunt performances.
  • Dream World – is home to the mighty Tower of Terror which was once the world’s fastest rollercoaster. Today Dream World is an epic place for everyone — it’s one of the best things to do in Surfers Paradise for couples, families and friends with rides and fair-style food on offer.
  • SeaWorld – another theme park near Surfers Paradise but I don’t really recommend Sea World as dolphins are used as entertainment tools and they’re held in small concrete pools.
  • Surfers Paradise Mini Golf – okay, it’s not actually a theme park but the western-themed attraction is perfect for the whole family. The only outdoor mini golf course here, they also have games like giant jenga, a giant dartboard and a table tennis table.

Save yourself some money and book a combo pass to these attractions for multple days of fun!

5) Shop til you drop

The Gold Coast will certainly make your pockets lighter — but not in the way you think. Shopping in the area and its surrounds is one of the best Surfers Paradise activities for those visiting this sunny part of Australia. It has enough shops to have you going to a different outlet every day of the year.

6) SkyPoint Deck

Views of Surfers Paradise doesn’t get much better than being on top of Q1, Australia’s tallest building reaching a staggering 323 meters. The SkyPoint Deck isn’t quite at the top; instead, it gets you 230 meters up! Getting to the 77th floor, where the observation deck is located, takes 43 seconds…that’s seriously quick.

Getting to the SkyPoint Observation Deck is pricey, but trust me, views of the Surfers Paradise skyline are worth the price tag.

  • SkyPoint Observation Deck 1 Day Ticket : “Enjoy amazing views of the Gold Coast from up the top of Skypoint! Ride in one of the world’s fastest elevators up to the 77th floor of the Q1 Tower and take in the views from the only coastal observation deck in Australia! Don’t forget your camera!”
  • Price: Starting at $23

7) Springbrook National Park

Surfer’s Paradise isn’t all about the surf and sea. Its lush national parks are fast becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of south east Queensland.

Springbrook National Park is home to Purling Brook Falls, a towering stream of pristine water plummeting into a pool below. The other noteworthy waterfall is Twin Falls, where the waterfall is divided into 2 streams as it cascades to the ground.

Springbrook National Park has a reasonable amount of lookouts but the best of them all is literally called Best of All Lookout. Here, views take you all the way to Mount Warning in New South Wales and Brunswick Heads down near Byron Bay! Springbrook National Park is an easy 45-minute drive from Surfers Paradise.

Springbrook National Park

8) Watch the pros at Snapper Rock

If you’ve ever watched the World Surf League, this Surfers Paradise beach has probably popped up on your television. Snapper Rock is commonly surfed by local legends Steph Gilmore and Mick Fanning, and on certain occasions, these pros have been spotted dropping in on a few sets at Snapper Rock.

Mick Fanning, a local hero and a 3-time World Surf Champion was already famous before he was attacked by a shark in Johannesburg, South Africa. While he punched the shark in its head to avoid its gnarly jaws, swimming and surfing on the Gold Coast is super safe.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

9) Lamington National Park

Lamington National Park is home to exceptional wildlife species, mountain ranges and endless trails to be explored. The geology of this national park is quite unique as it is part of a shield volcano which in fact was seriously big and scary many millions of years ago. The center of this volcano was Mount Warning and the total diameter of the volcano was 100 kilometers.

Today, Lamington National Park has a staggering 500 waterfalls so there won’t be a shortage of cascades to visit when you’re there! Lamington National Park is an easy 1-hour drive down towards the Queensland and New South Wales border, making it one of the best day trips for you and the family.

tourist spot paradise

10) Cavill Avenue

Cavill Ave, as the locals like to say, is the light and party of Surfers Paradise with a enough things to keep you occupied for days.

Cavill Avenue is very much unlike Sydney or Brisbane’s main CBD areas. Instead, Cavill Avenue is more of a family-friendly street full of colorful buildings and planter boxes full of tropical palm trees sending a warm and welcoming vibe.

Cavill Avenue isn’t a large place, and yes, it’s one street, so what can you do?

  • Timezone – was my second-favorite place to visit as a kid, complete with endless arcade games, bowling alleys and activities one would find at a fair. Timezone is based on how many tokens you collect: the more the better and the bigger the prize at the end of the night. Best of all, it’s not just for kids, this place is lit when the adults rock up for a bit of fun!
  • Ripley’s Believe it Or Not – one of the unusual things to do in Surfers Paradise, it definitely scares me with its creepy statistics and wax figures. But, Ripley’s is quite a cool Gold Coast museum to check out.
  • Duck Boats – now if you’re wondering what a duck boat is, I don’t blame you. A duck boat is a truck that can drive on land and float on water. I’m not sure who came up with the idea but when in Surfers Paradise, it’s a rite of passage for locals and tourists.
  • Surfers Paradise Beach – is the area’s main beach that meets the city and is considered one of the best beaches in Australia. It’s not every day that you get to relax on a beach, catch a wave or soak up the sun right next to one of Australia’s tallest skylines. How awesome would it be to work in a building like Q1, finish work, wax the surfboard and within 2 minutes be dropping in on a classic Surfers Paradise wave?
  • Gold Coast Afternoon River Cruise – from Cavill Avenue, you can enjoy a river cruise along the waterways of this Gold Coast region. The Surfers Paradise sightseeing experience comes complete with a drink and complimentary cheese and crackers enjoyed from the sundeck.

tourist spot paradise

11) Tamborine National Park

Tamborine National Park is one of the local’s favorite spots to chill out every day of the week, be it on Sunday night or a calm Tuesday afternoon.

Only 1 hour from Surfers Paradise, Tamborine National Park is home to stunning mountain lookouts spanning back to Surfers Paradise. There is also lush bushland and verdant forestry with cedar creeks and trails perfect for a walk on a warm summer’s day.

Along with Tamborine’s epic lookouts, waterfalls make this place a worthy destination to visit while in Surfers Paradise. You’ll find majestic waterfalls like Cameron Falls, Curtis Falls and Cedar Creek Rock Pools. The latter is a beauty of a place that falls into one of the beautiful Gold Coast waterways perfect for admiring the natural splendor.

tourist spot paradise

12) Tallebudgera Creek

If you’re in Burleigh Heads and looking for something else to do, Tallebudgera Creek is a hotspot for everything water! Located on the edge of Burleigh Head National Park, Tallebudgera Creek flows right on by out to the ocean and over the years has become the best place to chill out on the Gold Coast.

Tallebudgera Creek has facilities for cooking up a classic Australian barbecue, but I still question whether or not Australians throw ‘a shrimp on the barbie’. Stand-up paddle boarding is another fun thing to do here, especially when the tides are low, which makes for an incredible day out on the water.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

13) Mount Barney National Park

Sure, Mount Barney National Park is the furthest place away from the Gold Coast on this list. However, the 1.5-hour drive from the bustling skyline to this natural beauty is very much worth doing. In fact, I would say that this park is the definite winner in the contest with other Surfers Paradise parks like Springbrook, Lamington, and Macintosh Island Park.

Mount Barney National Park is home to exceptional hiking trails, flowing creeks and cute koalas — what more could you ask for? If you’re an avid hiker, you’ll be blessed with some scenic and indescribable views at the area’s peak.

Mount Barney has around 8 different routes that all lead to the summit, some 1,359 meters above sea level. Mount Barney has its own microclimate, with clouds often inundating the summit, which soon clears by mid-morning.

Camping on the summit of Mount Barney is also possible at a place called Rum Jungle and as beautiful as the camping area is, I was thoroughly disappointed to hear that there was no rum in Rum Jungle.

Conditions can change quite rapidly so be prepared if camping on the summit. Be sure to check with the Mount Barney official website . While visiting any other national park in the Gold Coast area, Parks Queensland will provide the best and most up-to-date information.

Food and Dining in Surfers Paradise

Food is one of my favorite past times and when I am in a new destination or one I’ve been to, I need to know immediately where the best food is. So, here’s a couple of my favorite spots to go and chow down on the Gold Coast.

  • The Collective Palm Beach – serves a mean array of burgers, fries and fresh brewed beers which sounds like my perfect Sunday!
  • Jimmy Wah’s – is located at Burleigh Heads and is one of the best Vietnamese eateries on the coast. If I see a sign that says Pho you can take my money, credit card or watch because Vietnamese cuisine holds a special place in my heart.
  • Hardrock Café – isn’t generally a place I’d go to dine but it’s a thing you just gotta do when in Surfers Paradise. With a solid menu built around something you’d find in the streets of Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Hardrock Café is bound to give you a food coma.

If you’re a serious foodie, check out this article “ All The Very Best Restaurants In Surfers Paradise ” for a bit more information on dining needs!

Where to Stay in Surfers Paradise – Best Accommodation Options

Surfers Paradise and its surrounds have no shortage of places to crash; it just comes down to your budget, a thing that affects us all in one way or another.

  • Alpha Sovereign Hotel Gold Coast – is relatively cheap considering how close it is to Surfers Paradise. Rooms start at $93 AUD.
  • Surfers Paradise YHA – is a cheap as it gets, and with a dorm room so close to all of the action, $50 AUD is a great deal. YHA is one of the best hotel chains in Australia and New Zealand and gets my tick of approval.
  • Surfers Paradise Backpackers Resort – is even cheaper than the YHA with rates for a dorm room starting at $40 AUD per night, a damn good deal when you’re right on the doorstep of Cavill Avenue.

Things To Do in Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is hard to miss when travelling up or down the East Coast of Australia . I wasn’t really sure what to make of the place when I first went there as it had been a while since I’d seen skyscrapers! But it’s well worth staying for a few days to explore and you’ll certainly find plenty of things to do in Surfers Paradise. I’ve listed some of the best Surfers Paradise attractions from thrill seeking to very sedate, depending on what you fancy doing.

Surfers Paradise Attractions

1. infinity gold coast.

What the heck is that you may ask… I was exactly the same, not knowing at all what to expect and with no idea what was about to happen. I had an amazing experience with Infinity but it’s very hard to explain just exactly what Infinity is, so as they say on their website; “INFINITY is a unique and mind-blowing 30 minute journey into spectacular, futuristic maze-like worlds of wonder – an extraordinary series of 20 multi-sensual environments filled with unique special effects, emotive atmospheric sound fields, sensuous aromas, ultra-groovy music and amazing spectacular illusions that appear to go all the way to infinity!” so you’ll just have to go and check it out yourself or watch this amazingly cheesy video!

2. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is around a 30 minute drive, or 1 hour train journey, south of Surfers Paradise. Expect to see lots of iconic Australian animals , such as Tasmanian devils, koala’s, emu’s, dingo’s, cassowaries, kangaroos, crocodiles… As well as seeing all of these animals and more, there are opportunities for wildlife encounters. Ever wanted to feed a crocodile? Or maybe you fancy a cuddle with a possum or a selfie with a koala… All of the animal encounters will cost you a bit extra on top of your entrance fee but for a once in a lifetime experience it might just be worth it!

4. Skypoint Climb

270 metres above sea level, climbing the highest external building walk in Australia… that’s just a sample of what Skypoint Climb in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast is all about. This adrenaline pumping adventure captures the most AMAZING 360 degree views of the Gold Coast and its beaches, mountains, Broadwater and city. Fully attached to the rail system you climb 298 stairs before you arrive at the very top. After taking in the scenery for about 15-20 minutes it’s time to descend back down to the observation deck.

Oh yeah and there’s also a Night climb too on Fridays and Saturdays so you can see all the city lights.

5. Jetboating

From the super spunky stretch jeep pick up to the fabulously fast jet boat – Paradise Jet Boating  is a fantastic way to see the Gold Coast. Cruising through the Gold Coast Broadwater is absolutely beautiful! A slow cruise through Sovereign Islands gives you a sneak peak of some of the Gold Coast’s most rich and famous residents. (I turned green with envy as we cruised past the multi-million dollar mansions.)

Then you’re off to Wave Break island travelling at what feels like a ridiculous speed – going extremely close to the islands edge as well as 360 spins around the marker beacons in the water. Talk about an adrenaline rush.

You’re in a place that has ‘surfers’ in its name so it would be rude not to go surfing while you’re here. You can learn to surf in Surfers Paradise or hire a surfboard. The surf conditions are particularly good for beginners.

7. Go on a River cruise

Do something a bit different from the usual Surfers Paradise attractions aimed at thrill seekers and go on a leisurely sightseeing river cruise. With Wyndham River Cruises you can choose a 1 hour morning coffee and muffin cruise, a 2 hour lunch buffet or a 3 hour evening cruise with an a la carte menu if you feel like being a bit fancy. Or head out with Surfers Paradise River Cruises whose trips are slightly cheaper. With both companies you get to explore the canals and check out the homes of the rich and famous.

8. Aquaduck tours

Why not combine a river cruise with a city cruise and explore Surfers Paradise in Australia’s first amphibious Aquaduck ride? You start with exploring the city and head out to Main Beach before driving into the water when your trip turns into a cruise!

9. Timezone

If you feel like reliving your childhood then you should head to Timezone. Play arcade games and pinball machines, have a go on the dodgems, play mini golf, air hockey, ten pin bowling or choose from loads more games and attractions. A seriously fun time can be had here!

10. Ripley’s Believe it or not

If you like the bizarre and the unusual then you’ll love this. This is a collection of some of the strangest things that have existed. You can actually get a real sense of how tall the tallest man was by posing next to a figure of him, see a shrunken head, or pose next to a wedding dress made of toilet paper. As well as the oddities on display you can also challenge yourself to get through a laser race.

11. Indoor Skydiving with ifly

Suitable for pretty much all ages, if you don’t really want to jump out of a plane but still want to experience what free-falling feels like then an indoor skydiving experience could be the thing for you! It’s a really strange feeling but very fun and very safe!

12. Whale watching – June to November

One of the most popular things to do in Surfers Paradise, and Australia, is to go on a whale watching tour. Seeing such magnificent animals in their natural habitat is one of those things you will never forget. Many whale watching or dolphin watching tours allow you to go out a second time if you were unlucky enough not to see whales on your first trip out (which rarely happens to be fair).

13. Mini Golf (maybe with a beer or cocktail?)

I’m not going to lie to you, I love playing crazy golf, mini golf, putt putt… whatever you want to call it.

At King Tutt’s Putt Putt there are 3 courses to choose from, one outside and two inside. If it’s really hot then it’s worth heading indoors. The courses inside are themed to Ancient Egyptian and Dinosaurs, with the former helping explain the places name of King Tutt’s Putt Putt.

At Holey Moley there are 18 crazy golf holes, a karaoke room, and probably the best thing – a cocktail bar!

14. Hire a bike and explore the coastline

A beautiful coastline and glorious weather means only one thing: a bike ride.

15. Stand up paddle boarding

Surfers Paradise is a great place to go stand up paddle boarding. There are lots of waterways and they’re really nice to explore. There are a few places you can hire SUP boards from, or take lessons if you’ve never done it before.

16. Go to Stradbroke Island

If you fancy getting out of Surfers Paradise for the day why not head out to the beautiful Stradbroke Island. You can do a half day tour from Surfers Paradise which includes plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling. Other tours include kayaking or Stand Up Paddle Boarding. All tours give you the chance to just lounge about on the beach or spot wildlife in this tropical paradise.

17. Beachfront markets

All good tourist hotspots have great markets and Surfers Paradise is no exception. This is a big market which therefore has a huge variety of things to buy. The beachfront markets are open every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night from 4pm until 9pm. Like many Australian night markets you can shop while enjoying the live entertainment. Head into town afterwards for a bite to eat, after getting your dinner special vouchers from the marquee at the market.

18. Sample the nightlife

The two main things most people hear about Surfers Paradise before arriving are the skyscrapers and the nightlife. So basically you have to experience the nightlife in Surfers Paradise on at least one night that you’re here. As well as things like slingshot, evening shopping, amazing restaurants and the night market there are of course also some good bars. Pubs, clubs, bars with live music… you name it it’s here.

19. Paint and drink

I absolutely love the idea of this. Brush and Barrel is the place to go to do a bit of painting with your friends whilst drinking your favourite wine (it’s BYO).

20. Hit the Beach

After all that activity, why not spend the day on the beach. Surfers Paradise has a massive beach so it’d be hard not to find a spot all to yourself.

21. Shopping

And finally, well for this list anyway, why not go shopping? Head to the Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre for some of your usual shops, even a Coles supermarket. The Paradise Centre on Cavill Avenue is where you’ll find Timezone as well as a Hard Rock cafe amongst many others. Or check out Cavill Lane for some ‘sophisticated food and fashion’. Soul Boardwalk is an open air shopping centre where the only beachfront eateries in Surfers Paradise are located. This is also where to find Ripley’s Believe it or Not.

So, as you can see, there’s much more to Surfers Paradise than skyscrapers and crazy nightlife. It’s a pretty cool place to visit with plenty of options for things to do.

There Are More Things To Experience While On Paradise Island!

The Bahamas is the quintessential definition of a tropical paradise! And out of the 700 islands in the Bahamas , there is no better spot for tourists than Paradise Island. The tiny island, merely measuring 1.1 square miles, hits way above its weight class as far as vacation hotspots go.

Located off the shores of the capital city, Nassau, and connected to New Providence Island by a 2,600-foot bridge, Paradise Island has long been considered the ultimate playground for holidaymakers in the Caribbean region. However, its profile was raised with the launch of the Atlantis Island Paradise Resort & Casino, an electric nightlife Mecca that wows visitors with its grandiosity and lavishness (think Vegas in the heart of the tropics). World-class resort aside, Paradise Island has all the hallmarks of the perfect holiday spot. From beautiful beaches and luxury resorts to endless fun activities, there is never a dull time in one of The Bahamas’ most charming islands !

UPDATE: 2023/08/01 18:40 EST BY NOAH STAATS

This article has been refreshed with new information regarding traveling to Paradise Island in the Bahamas and things to do here. From the world-famous Atlantis Resort to a pirate museum and beyond, Paradise Island is the place to be. Have fun!

Things To Do

Paradise Island has always been reserved for tourists in the Bahamas. It is where the rich and famous go to play , awash with shops, restaurants, resorts, and exciting water-based activities, such as snorkeling, sailing, diving, and boating. There are enough adventures to fill a visitor’s itinerary for at least a week; here are the top ways to spend time on Paradise Island.

1 Spend The Day At The Pirates Of Nassau Museum

  • Address : 3MH4+23H, King and George St, Nassau, Bahamas
  • Hours : Tuesday - Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM
  • Tickets : $14.02 per person

While not far from Paradise, a 13-minute drive will get travelers between their hotel and the Pirates of Nassau Museum in Nassau, Bahamas. The museum showcases the city's history as an 18th-century pirate base, with replica pirate ships and exhibits. This is a great spot to spend a couple of hours with groups or kids, and it's indoors.

Downtown Nassau is very fun to stroll along, lined with shops, restaurants, and places to absorb the island sun, so for under 15 minutes in a cab: this is worth the endeavor.

  • Price: Tickets are also very affordable here, at $14 per guest.

2 Escape The Crowds At Rose Island

  • Coordinates : 25°05′15″N 77°13′10″W / 25.08750°N 77.21944°W

Something to do while on Paradise Island would be to island hop to Rose Island, a quieter, remote location accessible only by boat. Like many Bamahas islands, Paradise is located near other smaller locations, where people can unwind and relax without having to head to a big hotel or crowded beach.

One thing to remember, however, is that Rose Island in the Bahamas does not have hotels, roads, and places to stay: so this is a very temporary spot to visit. Some Paradise Island hotels offer services to get here, as well as cruise lines, so this isn't a wild unknown spot either.

According to past adventurers, the island is a 30-minute boat ride from Paradise, so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to get from point A to B. Again, this would be more of a half-day trip for vacationers, so 2–3 hours should be feasible.

The boat ride to Rose Island from Paradise Island is roughly 30 minutes, with ferries running from the main island by the hour. People generally charter here with a dedicated captain, so that's one cost to consider.

3 View The Marine Habitat At Atlantis

  • Address : One Casino Drive, Suite 20, Paradise Island, Bahamas
  • Hours : Open 24 hours daily
  • Tickets : Free for guests, and day passes available to non-guests

For those in Paradise Island, Bahamas, the Atlantis Hotel is where many activities exist on the island. Here is where the Marine Habitat at Atlantis sits, boasting lagoons, caves, coral formations, and underwater ruins filled with exotic marine life.

Notably, the Marine Habitat features animals like sharks, rays, barracuda, eels, and critically endangered Smalltooth sawfish. This aquatic center is also home to the largest open-air marine habit on Earth, which is certainly something to brag about.

During hotter summer months, heading to this aquarium could also be a nice way to cool off, so that's something to consider too.

With 250+ species inside, this is easily a 2-3 hour adventure while on Paradise Island, so make sure and allow enough time to see everything.

4 Make The Most Of The Water-Based Fun

  • Many hotels and companies offer snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming with animals.

Paradise Island offers an endless list of entertaining water sports. Snorkeling and scuba diving are among the favorites for visitors to the island, providing the opportunity to experience the beautiful coral reefs and explore shipwrecks or interact with amazing underwater life up close.

Alternatively, kayak, paddleboard, or jet ski for a more adrenaline-filled activity. Those not trying to get wet can charter a boat to scope out the series of almost 300 islands and undisturbed cays dotting the area.

10 Attend The Exciting Junkanoo

  • The Junkanoo Festival is considered a fun way to spend the day in Paradise.
  • This is a half-century tradition on the islands.

One of the best ways to experience raw Bahamian culture is to participate in the colorful Junkanoo festival. The annual festival combines spectacular costumes, upbeat music, and captivating dances, culminating in an overwhelming atmosphere for participants.

The half-century tradition is a cultural phenomenon that provides visitors with front-row access to the raw Bahamian experience. Crowds gather on the streets to watch dance parades and celebrate local art, crafts, and cuisine, reflecting the exuberant spirit of Bahamians.

12 Best Time To Visit Paradise Island

Paradise Island enjoys sunny weather throughout the year, and tourists will cherish visiting the island in any season. However, the best time for tourists is between December and April, when the weather is perfect for spending time at the beach.

Temperatures range between 73 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit, with the cooler month coming in January (71) over the five months. This is also the peak season on the island, and beaches are crowded with tourists craving to enjoy the warm waters of the Atlantic.

Hotels are in high demand during the peak season, and prices significantly hike, so book well in advance to avoid the exorbitant rates.

The best time for budget travelers is in the off-season, between July and August. Crowd numbers drop on the island; the same is true for accommodation rates. However, this also falls within the rainy season, which can be limiting to visitors keen on enjoying the outdoor attractions.

Paradise Island lies within the hurricane belt and faces a threat of hurricanes and tropical storms from July to October (Atlantic Hurricane Season). Travelers should take safety precautions when visiting the island during the hurricane season .

13 Best Ways To Get Around Paradise Island

The best way to get to Paradise Island is to take a taxi upon arrival at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, which takes less than 20 minutes and cost about $50. Once on the island, there are multiple options for getting around, including:

Taxis are a quick and convenient way of exploring the island. Several Paradise Island operators will take visitors wherever they like at their preferred time. The taxis are not metered; travelers should establish the exact fare with the drivers before starting the journey.

Car hires are another option for moving around, although not highly recommended. Rental prices are relatively high, and gas is expensive on the island. The roads are not in the best condition, so chartering a taxi will be the better alternative.

Motorists on Paradise Island stay on the left side of the road, which can be confusing for American drivers.

Public jitneys

Jitneys (buses) make up the local public transit mode and offer a cheaper way to get around. They only cost about $1.5 for a one-way ride and traverse major areas like the Western Esplanade, Fort Charlotte, and Arawak Cay’s Fish Fry. Passengers must pay before boarding the jitney; the driver will only accept exact change.

  • Fares : Adults $1.5, Children $1
  • Hours : Operate daily, 6:30 am – 7 pm

Jitneys can be crowded and chaotic without defined schedules or stop points. They may not be the best option for tourists and are best left to the locals.

Water taxi/ferry boat

Water taxis offer a unique way to move around the island and come in handy for those planning a day trip to Nassau and other neighboring islands. The most common operator is the Bahamas Ferries, which serves Nassau, Long Island, Exuma, and Harbor Island.

  • Fares : Around $3 per person
  • Hours : Daily, 9 am – 6 pm

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

We know that South Floridians love to bring their dogs to the supermarket, the beach and out to eat. But did you know we live in a “Pets’ Paradise”?

We do, according to “Pets in Paradise,” a show that will appear on the Travel Channel on Tuesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 25, as part of a marketing program sponsored by the Palm Beach County Tourist Development Council. The half-hour show explores dog parks, beaches, hotels, restaurants and attractions in Palm Beach County and offers insight from a local veterinarian who details how to travel with a happy dog.

The show targets travelers but also locals who can learn that their pets will be welcome at more places than they might realize. Several tourists interviewed explained how they visited South Florida to escape northern winters and were thrilled their dogs could run freely in local dog parks and beaches.

The hosts of “Pets in Paradise” visit Juno Beach’s dog-friendly beach, the Palm Beach Lake Trail, West Palm Beach’s farmers market, Palm Beach International Airport, Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, West Boca’s Canine Cove, as well as restaurants and hotels that welcome pets with bowls of water and treats. Delray Beach veterinarian Jesus Aramendi offers tips on how to travel in cars and on planes with dogs in tow.

“There were so many more pet-friendly places than we anticipated,” said Paul Waide, a vice president at Apex Productions, the Riviera Beach-based company that produced the episode. “All these places welcomed us with open arms.”

If the episode gets lots of views, Waide said Apex hopes to find sponsors who will help produce shows in other pet-friendly destinations across the country.

“Pets in Paradise” will air on the Travel Channel at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, and Thursday, April 25.

Michelle Hillery, Palm Beach County’s film commissioner, said “Pets in Paradise” will air on several South Florida media outlets, including thepalmbeaches.tv , which showcases county destinations, and on streaming services run by local hotels, the Palm Beach County Convention Center and Palm Beach International Airport.

Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

A new floor sign system at the Moscow metro's Pushkinskaya station. Source: Vladimir Pesnya / RIA Novosti

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

Student volunteers help tourists find their way in Moscow

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

Finding the right exit

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

Kudankulam

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
