Grab your wicker basket and get shopping.

Le marché du carreau des halles, tours.

The historic city of Tours has a staggering 20 markets. Le Marché du Carreau des Halles is a real farmers’ market, with dusty vegetables pulled fresh from the fields. Established in 1833, it is one of the oldest in the city. It is a great place for fresh, local food directly from the farmers themselves. Get there early to select your fruit and vegetables before the heat of the day sets in and the locals descend.

Angers is the capital of the Anjou province. Close to the station, the city’s famous Marché Lafayette takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. With a huge array of restaurants and cafés, it can be tempting to first head for brunch in Angers , but make sure you leave plenty of room: the market’s bountiful stalls are bursting with fresh peaches, homemade jams and local cheeses. Make sure you pick up a portion of the freshly cooked snails for lunch and seek out one of the city’s beautiful parks. If you have time, head to la Maison d’Adam. The impressive building is home to more than 80 craftsmen and women who create an array of pieces using glass, clay and wood. The result is an Aladdin’s cave of unique souvenirs and gifts.

Loches Market

The medieval city of Loches has a great morning market every Wednesday and Saturday. Stalls displaying everything from freshly roasted chickens and immaculately presented goat’s cheese to handmade jewelry, and household items line the lower part of this beautiful cobbled city, all overlooked by its imposing castle. Arrive before 10AM and grab a free parking place just beyond the train station, then you can wander over the River Indre and take in the castle en route. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés dotted around for a post-market pick-me-up.

Chinon Antiques Market

Along a refreshingly shady tree-lined avenue, next to the River Vienne, the historic town of Chinon holds a decent antique market on the third Sunday of each month. It is a great place to rummage through old mirrors, antique frames and distressed furniture. The town itself is also worth a visit for its quaint cobbled streets and half-timbered houses.

Flower Market

The flower market.

The Flower Market in Amsterdam is the only floating flower market in the world. Founded in 1862, it is sited in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Singel between Muntplein and King Square in the city’s southern canal belt. Whether you have the hopes of purchasing flowers or just simply want to be surrounded by natural beauty at every turn, make your way here for a morning or afternoon filled with all of that and so much more.

Way back in the day, the flowers were in fact brought by boat to all of the different shops and buyers. However, obviously nowadays, the flowers are brought by vans but are still situated on the floating barges.

There are a total of fifteen different florist and garden shops that you can mosey through as well as a few shops that offer some great souvenirs to fill your suitcase with. The Flower Market is opened every day of the week from 9 AM to 5:30 PM as well as on Sundays from 11 AM to 5:30 PM. If you happen to be there during the holiday season in winter, then you will get the chance to see dozens of colorful Christmas trees of all sizes. The floating flower market at the Singel Canal is one of the most colorful and fragrant places of interest of Amsterdam in all four seasons!

The Marché aux Fleurs in Paris (Flower Market)

Nestled on the Île de la Cité, in the 4 th arrondissement of Paris, the Marché aux fleurs is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque corners of the French capital!

Brief history of the Paris Flower Market

The origins of the marché aux fleurs in paris.

The Marché aux Fleurs de Paris was founded in 1808. The city of Paris acquired a vacant lot on the Île de la Cité, on the banks of the Seine, and decided to transfer the market from its previous location on the other side of the river.

The Marché aux fleurs remained an open-air market until the 1870s. As part of the Haussmannian works, several streets in the vicinity were destroyed in order to enlarge the market, which was then equipped with metal pavilions rented to flower sellers.

The Paris Flower Market in the 20 th century

At the beginning of the 20 th century, the Marché aux fleurs was largely destroyed to allow for the construction of the Cité metro station (line 4), which was inaugurated in 1910.

The market wasn’t rebuilt until the mid-1920’s. Three rows of wrought iron pavilions with glass roofs were built, as well as two Wallace fountains, now classified as historical monuments.

A journalist of the time wrote: “Paris now has a pretty flower market […]. Large awnings that rise to the highest branches of the paulownias of the square cast a high and fresh shadow on the flowers […]. The flower market is a delightful place to visit in the summer”.

💦 What are Wallace fountains? 💦

Designed by the French sculptor Charles-Auguste Lebourg, the Wallace fountains are public cast iron fountains installed at the end of the 19 th century in Paris (and in a few other cities around the world) at the initiative of English philanthropist Sir Richard Wallace. The Wallace fountains have become a symbol of the French capital.

The Marché aux fleurs Reine Elizabeth II

In June 2014, Queen Elizabeth II visited France for the commemorations of the 70 th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

On this occasion, the Marché aux fleurs et aux oiseaux (Paris Flower and Bird Market) was officially renamed “Queen Elizabeth II Flower Market” in honor of the British monarch.

The Paris Flower Market gets a makeover

The Paris Flower Market has unsuprisingly lost some of its glory as it has not been renovated since the 1970s.

The Paris City Council therefore decided to have the historical market renovated. While there is much debate about the nature of the market’s rehabilitation (modernization or renovation of the existing pavilions as they were), the proponents of a “simple” restoration of the historic pavilions seem to be winning the day.

The area will also be made pedestrian-friendly and parking spaces will be replaced by vegetated patches.

Work will begin in 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2025. In the meantime, the merchants renting the pavilions will be relocated to a temporary hall where they will be able to continue to please botany lovers… as well as curious visitors!

Visiting the Marché aux Fleurs

The flower market.

Attention, botany lovers! The Paris Flower Market is heaven on earth for gardening amateurs.

Fairground amusements Indoor plants, local and seasonal flowers and shrubs, exotic varieties… In short, something to satisfy all gardeners, beginners as well as experts!

And even if you don’t have a green thumb, the Marché aux fleurs is perfect for a quiet stroll far from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The Paris Flower Market is definitely one of the most picturesque spots in the capital… and truly one of Captain Ulysses’ favorites in Paris!

The Bird Market

Every Sunday, the Bird Market displays a wide variety of birds, both quite ordinary and much rarer. Bird owners can also shop for cages, seeds and accessories.

You will also find small pets such as rodents.

🦜 Bird Market scheduled to end in 2025 🦜

In February 2021, the Paris Council voted to end the sale of birds at the Marché aux fleurs in the name of animal welfare. The Bird Market is scheduled to close down after the completion of rehabilitation work in 2025.

Some 5,000 years back when Shri Bajranabh was around 13 years old, he asked his Grand Mother (daughter-in-law of Lord Krishna) as to how Lord Shri Krishna looked like; Then He made an image as per the description is given by her. She, however, said that not all but the feet of that image looked like those of Lord Shri Krishna. He made another image, yet she said that the Chest looked like that of Lord Shri Krishna. Thereafter, He made the Third Image and looking at the same she veiled her face as a show of modesty and remarked that the face of the deity was exactly like that of Lord Sri Krishna. Read more

Farouq gave us a wonderful tour, took us through the beautiful history of Jaipur, recommended the best places to shop and dine from which made our trip memorable. The one thing to call out is Farouq's honesty - my mum has a bad knee so everything Farouq recommend was around her comfort rather than push for long road trips or excessive climbing. His knowledge of Jaipur's history, architecture, and culture is unquestionable. He's fluent in English and Hindi which was important for us. Columbia Road Flower Market is open every Sunday from 8am to 3pm, and is the perfect way to experience London like a local. Arrive early in the morning for a chilled out atmosphere as you walk along one of the worlds most famous flower markets. Columbia Road is located in trendy Shoreditch, famous for its young vibes and awesome street art. Make sure to check out some of the nearby antique stores, designer galleries and artisan cafes.

Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road Flower Market

Columbia Road is famous for its flower market that takes place every Sunday between 8am to 3pm. Dozens of local traders set up stalls in the middle of the road, creating a boulevard of bright and colourful flowers! It’s not only amazing to see, but the flowers make perfect gifts.

Flower market highlights:

Every Sunday you can find:

  • Fine cut flowers
  • Bulbs including daffodils, tulips, bluebells, lilies and irises
  • Herbs including rosemary, sage, dill, basil, coriander & thyme

Shops and cafes line both sides of Columbia Road, and you’ll find everything from antique shops and boutique clothing stores to art galleries and artisan cafes. There are more independent shops on Ezra Street that leads off of the north end of Columbia Road.

Shopping Highlights:

  • The Yard – tucked away off Ezra Street this ‘yard’ is a collection of antique and flea market products

  • Cafe Columbia – fresh bagels served only on a Sunday

In And Around The Area

Columbia Road Flower Market is located on the edge of Shoreditch, one of the London’s trendiest areas situated in the East End of the capital. We recommend arriving at the Flower Market early in the morning (it opens at 8am) to avoid the crowds. From here, it’s easy to spend a day exploring Shoreditch. Start by heading to Hoxton Square, where there are lots of restaurants and cafes. Slowly wind your way through some of the narrow streets towards Shoreditch High Street. You’ll soon come across BoxPark, which is a group of tiny stores, each housing a local designer selling his or her goods.

At the end of BoxPark lies Brick Lane, which is one of London’s most iconic streets. On Sunday’s, you’ll find lots of stalls with traders selling all kinds of products from second-hand clothes to jewelry and gifts. Towards the end of Brick Lane lies Spitalfields Market , one of London’s most popular markets where you’ll find independent traders along with a selection of boutique restaurants and cafes.

The Ultimate Self Guided Tour of Mercado Jamaica, the Best Flowers Market in Mexico City

tours flower market

Far to the east of the leafy, quiet streets of La Condesa , north of the busy Historic Centre , lies perhaps the most delightful marketplace you’ll find in Mexico City ; the Mercado Jamaica or Jamaica Market . The  Mercado Jamaica is home to the largest flower market in the city, with over 1,150 stalls selling over 5,000 different varieties of flowers! Almost all of them are grown just a few hours from Mexico City. You really can’t get any more local than that! Walking into the flower market you are overcome with the scents and scenes all around you. The Mercado Jamaica is one of my favourite markets to visit for an absolutely sensory sensation! If you’ve never visited Mexico City before this is the kind of place you NEED to check out.

A Welcome Bouquet

I find that a bouquet of fresh flowers is the perfect thing to buy yourself upon arriving in a new city. It gives you a little task to complete, allows you to explore a new part of the city, and brings a touch of your personality into any standard hotel room. If you’ve been in Mexico City for any length of time, you’ll undoubtedly have seen the vast flower carts that wheel around the city. Bursting with brightly coloured flowers as they mill about the streets.

There are also beautiful flower stands that dot the edges of busy neighbourhoods and leafy promenades. Basically, you won’t be far from flowers anywhere you go in Mexico City! But the source of all these incredible flowers is the great Mercado Jamaica. So if you want to get your flowers from the source, a trip to Mercado Jamaica is well worth your time. But there is so much more to see in this marketplace than just flowers. Come hungry as this flower market is also home to some of the most amazing food anywhere in the city!

Location & How to Get there?

The Mercado Jamaica is located on the corner of Avenida Congreso de la Unión and Avenida Morelos , southeast of the Historic Center of Mexico City.

Uber is always my best recommendation for travel in Mexico City. It’s very safe and very cheap! The Mercado Jamaica is about a 13-minute ride from La Condesa , Roma Norte or the Historic Centre . And it will only cost you about 35 pesos or $1.35 USD! Although traffic in Mexico City is as bad as you might have heard, just avoid peak hours and you should be fine to avoid the worst of the traffic.

The market is also easily accessible by the metro. If you are departing from La Condesa or Roma you can hop on brown line #9. Get on at Chilpancingo station and take the train four stops to Jamaica station (about 12 minutes). If you are departing from the Historic Centre , you’ll need to take two different metro lines. First, depart from the #2 blue line from Tasqueña station and take it three stops to Chabacano station (6 mins). Transfer from here to the brown line #9 and continue one stop towards Jamaica station (3 mins). The metro costs only 5 pesos, and if you’re up for more of an adventurous journey, this is an easy and quick trip. But always be sure to practice caution on the metro and keep your valuables safe and not on display.

History of the Jamaica Market

Although you might read the word  “ Jamaica ” and think of the country,  Jamaica  is actually the Spanish word for hibiscus flower . So the name of the market translates into the Hibiscus Market. The Mercado Jamaica was officially established in the 1950s when the eastern part of Mexico City was a governmental focus for modernization and revitalization. But outdoor marketplaces have existed in this spot for hundreds of years. Being located to the east of the city, near the chinampas of Lake Xochimilco , this part of town has always had wonderful access to the fruits, vegetables and flowers that have been grown there for centuries.

Cash is King

Bring cash  with you to the market to buy your flowers and food as almost everywhere is cash only. But remember not to carry too much money on you when arriving as you need to be aware of pickpockets in such a busy environment. I would bring about 500 pesos ($25 USD) per person, which is more than enough if you want to buy yourself a lovely bouquet, grab some food and get a little left if you see a souvenir or two you’d like to purchase.

Come Hungry!

Despite the fact that we are going to what is known for being a “flower market” this is still a foodie’s paradise so come on an empty stomach and get ready to eat. If you get full but want to come back for more food later you can always grab a bite to eat to start, then explore the flower market, and return to the starting point where you can sample the rest of the eateries you didn’t try earlier.

How to Keep Safe

This market is slightly outside the tourist centre, so you should be more cautious about your belongings. But no more than you should be in any busy marketplace anywhere in the world. Keeping aware of your surroundings is the most important thing you can do. If you carry a backpack, you can wear it in front of you. And always be sure to keep any valuables zipped inside inner pockets. Remember, this is a very busy , working market, so be sure not to stand in the way of people going about their business. Large carts and trucks often go up and down the aisles making deliveries, so keep a lookout for them.

Notes on Photography

I took many pictures here, had my phone out, and never felt unsafe. But I would advise you to take out your phone or camera, snap a few pictures and then put it away instead of just keeping it in your hand. This is probably not 100% necessary, but I always lean on the side of caution.

Be sure you keep a keen eye open for the “ No Photography ” signs around the market. There are several reasons for this. Some florists are wary of other sellers stealing their designs so they don’t allow photos of their products. Other vendors might have personal reasons for not being photographed, spiritual or simply, for privacy. No matter the reason, please respect their wishes . Many places in the market do not have these signs, so you’ll be able to get all the pictures you need elsewhere. If in doubt, it’s always polite to ask before taking a picture.

The best time for fresh flowers in Mexico City is from April to July. Although flowers are available year-round from greenhouses, this time of year is when you can get the flowers for the cheapest price as they are the most abundant. I would advise you to avoid going here on the weekends. This is when the market is the busiest and most chaotic. I found that visiting on the weekdays meant there was still lots to see, buy, and eat, but the atmosphere was a bit more laid back. Because this market also exports flowers around the world and throughout the country, this is the only market in Mexico City that is open 24 hours a day! So you can be sure that no matter when you visit there is something to see!

If you find yourself in Mexico City during the Day of the Dead festivities, Mercado Jamaica is incredible to check out. It is the main supplier of hundreds of thousands of flowers that adorn ofrendas all over the city. The market is filled to bursting during this time of year, with truckloads of marigolds coming to and from every day! Marigolds are called ‘cempaxuchitl ‘ in Spanish, which means “ flower of the dead. ” Since they are one of the most fragile flowers they have been known to represent the fragility of life itself.

Another fantastic time of year to come to Mercado Jamaica is at Christmas time. Even in Mexico City, you’ll find hundreds of evergreen Christmas trees lining the outside of the marketplace, ready to be picked up by excited families to nestle their presents under. Inside you’ll find hundreds of poinsettias , as this Christmas flower is locally grown in Mexico. The piñatas are a real showstopper at Christmas time, and you’ll find one in almost every household. Piñatas were traditionally designed in the shape of a seven coned star, with each spoke representing one of the seven deadly sins. Bashing the piñata was the symbol of good triumphing over evil and the fruit and candy inside the reward for leading a good, Christian life.

Here are some handy dandy Spanish words to help you out at the Market! The colours will be very helpful to learn so you can ask for the right coloured flowers to suit your bouquet.

¡Buenas Dias! or ¡Buenas Tardes! / Good Morning or Good Afternoon (always use this to greet a vendor) ¿Cuánto cuesta? / How much is this? ¡Muchas gracias! / Thanks a lot! una docena / one dozen

blanco / white amarillo / yellow anaranjado / naranjo – orange rojo / red rosado / pink morado / púrpura – purple

The Layout of the Market

The Mercado Jamaica is divided into different areas called “carrils” which means lanes . The northernmost building is almost totally devoid of flowers and is primarily where you’ll find amazing street food . I’ve noted it as the “food market” on the map below . There are maps inside the market but they are few and far between so I went ahead and made my own. As you wander south, you’ll enter Carril #4. As you can see from the map below, marked in green, this section of the market sells “ Articulos de 1ra Necesidad” which is like saying grocery items . This is where you’ll find produce, candies, dried peppers, toys and piñatas.

It’s not until the southernmost sections, Carril #2 and #1 that you’ll start to see the true enormity of the flower market. Before you can even see the flowers, you’ll know you’ve arrived. There are two sets of public washrooms in the market. Be sure to bring a 5 peso coin with you as they usually charge a small fee to use the washroom and get a handful of toilet paper when you go inside.

If you arrive via the metro, you should come out of the station on the north side of the market, along Avenue Morelos . If you’re arriving by Uber, set your destination to the northeast corner of the market. At the corner of Avenue Morelos and H. Congreso de la Union.

Carnitas Paty

Your first stop should be at a long communal table right at the front of the market outside the food stall  Carnitas Paty . Pig heads hang in the butcher shops down the aisle, and you know right away you’re in the place to get pork! Carnitas Paty specializes in different cuts of meat served up on a double stack of fresh corn tortillas. I would go for the Costilla (ribs), lengua (tongue – which, yes, is amazing) or the trompa (roasted pork).

tours flower market

All the tacos come topped with raw onions and cilantro. While I  thought  I’d had carnitas before, after tasting this, it felt like I had never eaten them before in my life. This was the best-tasting taco I’ve ever eaten, and I still dream about it! All their tacos cost 30 pesos, and you can sample the various salsaa spread out on the table for an extra kick.

tours flower market

To pair with your tacos, you must try their  tepache .  Tepache  is a fermented pineapple drink made from the peel and the rind of pineapples and refined cane sugar. It has that tang you get from other fermented drinks like kombucha . It is super sweet but delicious and definitely helps cleanse the palette after fatty pork tacos. It’s really the perfect combination! You can get a litre for 30 peso s, a half litre for 15 pesos or just a glass for 12 pesos.

tours flower market

Huaraches Rossy

Beside the Carnitas stand, you can find another stall called Huaraches Rossy. Huaraches are a Mexican street food staple made from a piece of masa dough. The dough is mixed with pinto beans and rolled into an oblong, similar to the shape of the sole of a Huarache shoe, hence the name . The dough is then fried on the comal (grill) and crowned with various toppings.

The huaraches at Huaraches Rossy are known for their sides consisting of a slice of fresh avocado, a cooked nopal pad, fried greens onions and lemon. You can get your Huarache with fried eggs (huevos), cheese (queso), ribs (Costilla), chicken breast (pechuga) and more. My favourite option if you arrive in the morning is fried eggs and cheese. Each huarache costs 65 pesos or $3.30 USD.

Mariscos Los Paisas

One of the most famous street food stalls in Mercado Jamaica is  Mariscos Los Paisas . They are best known for their famous tacos Al pastor made with  octopus  instead of the traditional pork shoulder. The stacked octopi are spinning around the spit as the chefs coat them in that iconic red al pastor sauce. If you only want to try the octopus tacos, you can simply order one of those, but my recommendation (if you’re a seafood lover) is to go for the  trio of tacos . This consists of  Carnitas de Atún  (tuna tacos),  Pulpo al Pastor  (octopus al pastor) and  Suadero con Camaron  (stewed shrimp tacos). Although Mexico City is far from the ocean, they still have access to the fantastic seafood that the oceanside towns are known for. And this is one of the best places in the city to give these dishes a try.

Piñata Market

Walking deeper into the market, into the next building (Carril #4) you will start to see large stalls selling hundreds and hundreds of pinatas. Mercado Jamaica is known for its huge piñatas selection. Design range from traditional stars to cartoon characters. And I even saw a covid one! What a perfect thing to bash away at, a way of taking out all the pent-up frustration over the loss of the last two years. These stands also sell lots of toys, party decorations and little candies perfect to stuff inside the pinatas.

tours flower market

Fresh Fruit Stands

In this part of the market, you’ll also find rows and rows of vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables. Many different fruits are stacked high up on tables, they look like little gems as they are so brightly coloured and shiny. Some vacuum sealed inside pre-made fruit baskets ready to be presented as a delicious gift.

There is a myriad of different fruit on sale at the market. Many of which I had never even heard of before, let alone tasted. If you’re in town for a few days, I implore you to just go out and buy a selection of different fruits to try! Even if you have no idea what they are, they cost very little, and it’s so much fun to do a little taste test at home to see which ones are your favourite.

Fruit doesn’t need to be cooked so there’s no need for a kitchen. But you will need a good knife to cut into most fruits. I often ask the vendors if they can cut it open and then put it in a bag. If not, you can always find a vendor in the market who sells kitchen knives.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Azul 14!! (@claudiaulloa14)

What to Try

If you’re interested in a selection of my favourite options, I would start with the  Soursop  (or guanabana ). This fruit is tangy, sweet, and, as the name indicates,  sour . It’s a large, green fruit with a hard rind and big spikes. You also should find some  black zapote , which tastes like chocolatey permission pudding! It is indeed black when you cut into it, and you can eat it out of the rind with only a spoon. The black zapote is actually green on the outside and similar in shape to a persimmon.

tours flower market

Chirimoya also blew my mind! The Chirimoya is also called the “custard apple” as the flesh inside the fruit is soft and the colour of custard. But it tastes like a strawberry blended with a kiwi. Mark Twain  is known for calling the Chirimoya “the most delicious fruit known to man.” It is about the size of a large apple and has what almost looks like green scales on the outside.

Make sure you also see out some mamey fruit if it’s in season. Mamey is a fruit with brown, hairy skin, but it looks like a sweet potato with the pit of an avocado when you cut into it. It is like a combination of apricot, sweet potato and peach. I love the flavour, especially in a smoothie.

tours flower market

Jamaica Flowers

As the name of the market suggests, you’ll find lots of dried Jamaica (hibiscus) flowers . They can be found in huge, dark purple piles hidden away inside large barrels. The flower heads themselves look like a spikey, shrivelled version of the fresh flower. Jamaica or hibiscus flowers came to Mexico after colonization and actually originated from Africa. The most popular way to use dried flowers in Mexico is in Aguas Frescas . Aguas Fresca translates to “fresh water” and are amazingly refreshing beverages made from, water mixed with a variety of different flavours. The most popular flavour is Jamaica . The drink is made by boiling dried flowers (like you’d do with ta) and mixing them with water, sugar, ginger, and cinnamon. The flavour is incredible and definitely one of my favourite ways to compliment a spicy taco.

One of my friends also often adds just one dried flower to her pot of cardamon tea, and let me tell you, it’s life-changing! So be sure to grab yourself some dried hibiscus flowers when you’re in the market. If you’re travelling back to the US or Canada, just make sure they are in a sealed bag, but many places in the market do sell them like this if you ask.

Chorizo Verde

Among the fruits and vegetable stands, there is a butcher shop that sells one of the most unique tacos I’ve ever had! You’ll spot their shop by the bright yellow exterior, but there is no store sign outside. You’ll be able to recognize it by the large display of green herbs laid out beneath the meats on sale right out front. As well to fresh meat to bring home for dinner, they also have fresh tacos to sample right there in the Market. Order yourself up a green chorizo taco and take a seat on the small tables out front.

tours flower market

The green chorizo is made from pork sausage, mixed with a blend of fresh green veggies like spinach and lettuce. Then zesty green herbs are added to ramp the flavour up. Anything from cilantro, thyme, marjoram, whatever is in season. After this, they add green chillies (because heat is a staple of the chorizo sausage) and the most important and unique ingredient –  NUTS ! Yes, that’s right, they add anything from peanuts to pumpkins seeds or almonds to the meat. I cannot explain how unbelievable the taste of this taco is; you just have to try it for yourself.

tours flower market

Flower Market

As you head further south into the market, you’ll finally start to smell the aroma of fresh flowers. Follow your nose towards the brightly coloured flowers which seem to almost erupt from the ground. Walking around the flower market is the best kind of chaos. People are milling about, grabbing cartfuls of flowers for their stands in the city and small bouquets for their homes. Voices cry over one other as people haggled for the best prices.

tours flower market

Enormous sunflowers, roses, chrysanthemums, gerbera daisies and lilies line the edges of the aisles in huge brightly coloured buckets. A dozen long stem roses were on sale for only $50 pesos, which is $2.50 USD! A dozen sunflowers about 6 feet tall were on sale for $90 pesos, just 4.60. I couldn’t believe the prices, and it took everything in me not to just go nuts and buy it all. Prices were the best when I visited as it was during the Springtime. If you visit in the winter expect prices to be slightly higher as the flowers are less abundant and need to be ground in greenhouses as opposed to the chinampas.

tours flower market

As you move through the wholesale market, you’ll come into another section that sells MASSIVE pre-made bouquets from a myriad of different florists. These monumental displays are meant for funerals, communions, weddings and quinceañeras. The flowers are formed into giant hearts, large crosses, and baskets as big as a small child. Apparently, one of the most popular reasons people buy these huge floral arrangements is to apologize for cheating on their wives or girlfriends. The bigger the bouquet, the more sorry you’ll appear. Especially to the neighbours who can’t help but notice you walking home, with this typical guilty display.

tours flower market

La Güera Elotes

At the end of the market, right near the exit doors onto  Guillermo Prieto  street, is a small shop called  La Güera Elotes , selling popular Mexican street food, but elevated to another level. Esquites are fire-roasted corn kernels stewed in lard, mixed with aromatic herbs and Arbol chillies. I’ve had esquites many times before, as they are one of my favourite street snacks, but none as delicious as the ones we got here! There are definitely some secret ingredients at work here. A small cup costs $20 pesos, a medium is $22, and a large is $25.

You can also get Elotes , which is the same idea, but instead, the corn is grilled on the cob. They offer a specialty here called ‘ dorielotes ,’ which covers the corn cob mayo which is rolled in crushed Doritos! The store is also famous for its pan de elote , or cornbread. Unlike American cornbread, which is more of a savoury treat, their cornbread is like a cake. It’s very sweet and absolutely fantastic! It’s a bit dry, so be sure to have a drink on hand.

tours flower market

Before leaving the market, make sure you stop outside along Highway Congreso de la Unión to see the incredible murals painted along the outside of the Mercado Jamaica . Muralism in Mexico is such a popular thing to see everywhere you go. But the murals outside this market are so enormous, and it’s amazing to see the works of art that span the entirety of the building! There is always a new work of art to discover as they change throughout the year. To the delight of the vendors, everyday shoppers, tourists as well as the drivers who pass by on the highway on their way to work. Murals are truly such an incredible way to liven up a street and bring so much joy to an otherwise blank exterior. Much like flowers, that bring life into an otherwise bland space.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of Mercado Jamaica ! It’s honestly one of my favourite markets in Mexico City and well worth the time it takes to get here. Despite being a little out of the way, there is so much to see and do here so you’ll really feel like it’s worth the 20-minute drive from the city centre. Let me know in the comment what your favourite market is either in Mexico City or around the world

Expert Picks: Masters Tournament

Expert Picks

Change Text Size

How it works: Each week, our experts from PGATOUR.COM will make their selections in PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf. Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Masters Tournament in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – It’s not sexy, but I’ve spent too much time trying to rationalize a pick on someone else. At the end of the day, Scheffler was red-hot heading into his 2022 Masters triumph – and he’s playing materially better this time around.
  • Top 10: Ludvig Åberg (+225) – We all know the trends against first-time winners, but they don’t apply to the finish markets. Åberg led the Valero field in SG: Tee-to-Green last week and has all the skills required to contend in his major championship debut.
  • Longshot: Russell Henley (+6000) – The former Georgia Bulldog finished T4 here a year ago and has been known to heat up on the greens from time to time. Two top-5s in his last three starts show signs of promise.
  • H2H: Chris Kirk (-120) over Keegan Bradley – There aren’t a ton of course comps for Augusta National, but there are some undeniable parallels with the terrain of Kapalua. Expect the Sentry champ to play well, having finished T23 here last year, while Bradley has missed three of four cuts entering the week.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Xander Schauffele (+1600) – Look, we all know Scheffler has the chance to take this tournament and run with it but my process of elimination story brought me a winner last year and I’m banking it can do it again. Schauffele is ready to contend again… and you have to be knocking on the door to eventually be let in. Back off my blacklist and into the furnace!
  • Top 10: Sahith Theegala (+320) – I really like Theegala as an outright option here over the next few years. T9 a year ago with a hot finish and another year wiser to his game. He still has more foul balls off the tee than I’d like but if he can get away with those this week he’s a chance.
  • Longshot: Jason Day +6600 – Longshots don’t win the Masters and my campaign to move the threshold to +4000 this week fell on deaf ears (Zalatoris, Finau, Smith…). But how can I not plump for the man who – in his prime – had me declaring he’d win two green jackets in his lifetime? Multiple chances in the past… why not another.
  • Head to Head: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – Lowry’s Tee-to-Green game has been good of late whereas Morikawa is in a ball-striking slump compared to his usual high standards. This is as much a Morikawa fade as anything else.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior Content Manager Golfbet)

  • Winner: Scottie Scheffler (+400) – I’ll be that guy. My three finalists were him, Spieth and Schauffele. It came down to who I trusted most to win. And it’s not even close.
  • Top 10: Matt Fitzpatrick (+275) – I’m staying patient and not backing off my support of him. He had the best weekend of anyone in San Antonio and I still feel like he has great golf ahead of him.
  • Longshot: Max Homa (+5500) – I know what you’re thinking. However, name me a player with more talent/star power whose odds are above +5000.
  • H2H: Shane Lowry (-110) over Collin Morikawa – I almost picked Lowry for the top 10. Generally plays well here and has been in good form.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winner: Will Zalatoris (+4000) – Beware the hungry dog runs faster. It’s comeback time for the previous major runner-up. He’s come back to good form from his back surgery with a three-game stretch of T13, T2 and T4 earlier in the year. He played with Tiger on Monday and saw how great he looked recovering from his own surgery. Will even talked about the influence Tiger's comeback has had on his own journey. People are sleeping on Zalatoris' comeback because of his MC at THE PLAYERS and T74 in Houston. Augusta will bring something out of him. Zalatoris is ready to be among the top players in the world and will show it this week.
  • Top 10: Bryson DeChambeau (+300) – It’s been four years since he called Augusta National a par 67. He is older and wiser now to say such a thing. DeChambeau's game fits Augusta well and I see him taking a big charge at this championship in a quest to become a two-time major champion.
  • Longshot: Sam Burns (+5500) – The only reason I’m taking him here is that I’ve liked him to win for the past couple of months now and he hasn’t. A wise man once said, “if you like a player to win soon, more likely than not they will”.
  • H2H: Lowry (-110) over Morikawa – Collin’s game is a mystery this year. Most alarming has been his iron play which in past years has been seen as unstoppable. Combo that with the fact that Lowry does like Augusta and is in relatively good form as of late. I’ll take the current form over past success.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Augusta National Golf Club is known for the Masters Tournament , the Green Jacket and the abundance of flowers.

Built on a former nursery, it’s a natural place for all those beautiful colors, which, barring a cold snap, bloom just in time for the tournament each year in April.

The official Masters media guide states that “it is estimated that, since the course was built, more than 80,000 plants of over 350 varieties have been added to the Augusta National landscape.”

Each of the 18 holes are named after flowers at the course.

From the official Masters media guide:

It was Louis Alphonse Berckmans, son of P.J.A. Berckmans, who, along with [club founders] Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, adorned each hole with the plant for which it was named. At age 74, Louis returned to Augusta to help rehabilitate the trees and shrubs on the golf course. He was made a member of the Club and in approximately 1932, as a member of the Beautification Committee, decided where to locate the 18 varieties. Some were already in their proper location, but plants for the majority of the holes had to be planted.

Take a look at all the of the beautiful flowers – and pine trees – around the property.

2024 Masters TV schedule, coverage, live stream, channel, how to watch streaming online, golf tee times

How to watch every memorable moment of the 2024 masters on tv or streaming live.

2024-masters-flag-schedule-g.jpg

The most wonderful time of the golf season continues into the weekend as the beauty of April surrounds Augusta National Golf Club. The 2024 Masters is a star-studded affair with a loaded field featuring the best golfers in the world. Scottie Scheffler entered as the favorite and remains that way, standing as one of three leaders through 36 holes.

Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy have both struggled despite making the cut, while five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods set a new record at Augusta National  by making the weekend in his 24th consecutive playing of the tournament. Woods sat 1 over and just on the outskirts of contention after making 22 fairways through his first 36 holes, his best such mark since 1999, but it did not take long for him to fall off after his third round got underway.

Tiger hit consecutive double bogeys on the 7th and 8th to quickly fall out of any semblance of contention. In what is Woods' first tournament playing more than one round in 2024, it's not that much of a surprise to see him struggle playing his third round in as many days; in fact, Tiger was forced to play 23 holes on Friday due to a prior weather delay.

The two names that my surprise some to see alongside that of Scheffler are Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau. The former, a 33-year-old with nine PGA Tour wins, is experiencing somewhat of a breakout with his T10 at the 2023 Open Championship serving as a bit of a salvo to his resurgent play in majors. The latter, a 30-year-old who won the 2020 U.S. Open and has two top-10 major finishes since, is retooling his game and learning how to be risk-adverse -- at least on occasion.

Will either pull ahead of Scheffler, the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour over the last two years? Follow  2024 Masters leaderboard live updates throughout Round 3  right here for continuous coverage over the last two days.

While attending the Masters is a dream for many, simply being able to watch golf on the grandest stage of them all is an incredible treat each year, and we here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the Masters throughout this week.

CBS Sports offers extensive, week-long coverage across all its platforms with its traditional 18-hole broadcast coverage beginning with the third round on Saturday and final-round action on Sunday. Jim Nantz, in his 39th consecutive year covering the Masters, serves as host for the 37th time. 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman joins Nantz as the lead analyst at the Masters for the second time. Nantz and Immelman link up with CBS Sports' incredible golf team, including on-course reporter Dottie Pepper and the legendary Verne Lundquist, who will be calling his final Masters.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much Masters as possible throughout the week. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and download the CBS Sports app  to watch Masters Live on your mobile device.

The six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home was built in 2005 and sits on a tree-lined street that’s away from the hustle and bustle of downtown DC, but still a stone’s throw away from all the city has to offer.
