Best 8 Campgrounds in Savannah, Georgia

The oldest city in Georgia with antebellum buildings, trolleys, and cobblestoned streets. The Spanish moss that covers centuries-old live oak trees, the fields that bore the brunt of Union and Confederate battles, and the winding Savannah River that once carried wooden pirate ships are all examples of Savannah’s natural beauty, which is just as much a part of its identity as its man-made attractions.

You don’t have to fork over a lot of money to stay in a fancy bed and breakfast to explore one of the South’s most important historical cities. There are many campgrounds close to Savannah, Georgia where you may experience the best of the South’s history, wilderness, and charm.

There are campgrounds close to Savannah, Georgia that will make you feel at home in the “Hostess City of the South,” whether you’re exploring the ancient town or looking to get away from the bustle of the city.

1. Skidaway Island State Park

You can find Skidaway Island State Park’s marshy waters not far from Savannah’s historic district. Six miles of hiking trails meander through coastal forests in the 588-acre state park before coming to a boardwalk that extends into a salt marsh. In one of the few campgrounds in Savannah, Georgia, that is on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, you might catch a glimpse of a snowy egret here, but keep an eye out for other birds as well.

Due to its seclusion, Skidaway Island State Park is a favorite. A quiet Georgia wilderness refuge is created by natural growth between campsites and hanging Spanish moss.

Three camper cabins, three pioneer campgrounds, and 87 tent, trailer, and RV sites make up Skidaway Island Park’s campground. Bring your own sheets, plates, and utensils. The camper cabins are built for relaxing, with a master bedroom and a loft for youngsters. Groups of ten or more people are only permitted in the pioneer campgrounds. When making a reservation on the Georgia State Parks website, be sure to verify the plot details as not all of the tent, trailer, and RV sites have sewer hookups.

2. Fort McAllister State Park

You will be surrounded by enormous, centuries-old live oak trees at Fort McAllister State Park. The Union General William Tecumseh Sherman was halted here on his flaming march to the sea after burning down Atlanta, unlike other campgrounds close to Savannah, Georgia.

At Fort McAllister, which has, among other things, cannons, a hot shot furnace, bulletproof barracks, and a Civil War Museum, historical reminders are everywhere. Not a big history fan? The campground, which is situated directly on the banks of the Ogeechee River, is a stunning feature of the Georgia countryside.

Normally, Fort McAllister’s campground offers 67 tent, trailer, and RV sites for reservations, but as of this writing, only 41 are open because renovations to 100 AMP service are in progress. Seven stilted huts are also available in the site for a fully realistic marsh camping experience. A 1.5 mile journey leads to two wilderness camping areas.

3. Red Gate Campground and RV Resort

Of all the campgrounds nearby to Savannah, Georgia, Red Gate Campground is the one that is closest to historic Savannah and has the most genuine old Southern charm. The campground resembles a vast Southern estate with lush green fields, lakeshores, and live oaks rather than just a location to park your huge trailer.

Even though Savannah is only ten minutes away, you’d be excused for staying put with the abundance of activities Red Gate Campground offers. With all coaching and equipment provided, campers can mount up and ride horses to explore the area; costs start at $45 for a 30-minute ride. On-site amenities include a clubhouse, a saltwater pool, and fishing ponds. Another noteworthy attraction that is a very popular wedding venue is The Mackey House.

However, if you plan to depart, you can arrange a trolley pick-up and ride an Old Town Trolley Tour into the city.

4. Sunshine RV Park

Although amenities are good, not every camper needs them. Sunshine RV Park is the ideal for you if you enjoy the outdoors without any frills.

The Sunshine RV park has 70 full hook-up plots that may be reserved, along with Georgia wilderness that is covered with forests, however there is no pool, golf course, or horseback riding paths. The cost savings and the helpful employees more than make up for the lack of amenities. The nightly price is $45 here. The fact that Savannah is only eight miles away and the ocean is only 30 minutes away makes this one of the few campgrounds nearby Savannah, Georgia, that offers campers the best of both worlds.

5. Little Tybee Island

The best-kept camping secret in Savannah is Little Tybee Island. Since getting there requires a canoe or kayak voyage, it’s typically a nice area to stay away from the camping hordes. Little Tybee is a barrier island that is uninhabited and undeveloped.

Little Tybee offers unmarked, primitive, free camping. Anywhere on the island is suitable for camping, but make sure to bring extra food and water for your stay and carry everything out when you’re done.

The ospreys and bald eagles that nest on the island and the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that tumble close to the coast may provide you with company when you’re away from people.

Only seasoned paddlers are advised for these expeditions. You are completely alone once you arrive on the island. Wild raccoons, snakes, and bugs prowl the area, so be ready to keep your food safely. You should also think about using a hammock to elevate your sleeping position.

6. CreekFire Motor Ranch Campground

The CreekFire Motor Ranch Campground takes pleasure in offering a flexible camping environment. There are 103 RV sites, rustic tent sites, and seven cabins available for camping. At CreekFire Motor Ranch, the camping experience is distinguished by the contemporary cottages. Many have lofts, and some have the traditional Southern front porch, which is ideal for relaxing on at sunset while sipping sweet tea. There are three cottages that allow pets.

Campers can work out on the bocci, basketball, tennis, or pickleball facilities on the resort portion of the property, relax poolside in a cabana, or stroll the nature trail that runs alongside the lake. Kayaks can be rented as well.

7. Savannah Oaks RV Resort

Of all the campgrounds close to Savannah, Georgia, Savannah Oaks RV Resort boasts the best amenities for RV campers. This 24-acre RV site is located directly on the Ogeechee River about 20 miles west of Savannah. The region is covered in slender oak trees, as the name would imply, which provide shade for the RV sites.

RVers can take advantage of free hot showers, heated and air-conditioned bathrooms, free wifi, a playground, and a boat ramp. The pull-through sites at Savannah Oaks RV Resort should be able to accommodate you whether you’re towing a tiny camper or a 5th wheeler.

Rates vary depending on whether you want a complete hookup or simply water and electricity, as well as whether you’re staying over a weekend or a holiday. There are several dog species that are not permitted on monthly sites, so if you’re traveling with your canine camper, check with the resort.

8. River’s End Campground

Perhaps your desire for a beachside nap differs with your desire for Little Tybee’s grueling Survivor-style experience. If so, River’s End Campground would probably be a better fit for you. The River’s End Campground on Tybee Island’s main island is just half a mile from the beach. The amenities and convenience stores at Tybee’s beach resort are also within walking (or golf cart) distance.

Even though you’re on an island for your holiday, historic downtown Savannah is just a 15-minute drive across the bridge and has the largest swimming pool on the island.

RV sites on this property include complete hookups and come with 30/50 AMP service, sewer, water, and cable. Smaller RVs can use other campsites, and tent campers can select from basic or water and power campsites. Tybee Island is a well-liked vacation spot for people looking for adventure and camping close to Savannah, Georgia, especially during the busiest spring and summer travel seasons. To reserve a campsite close to Savannah’s beach, make your camping arrangements well in advance.
