You may have heard of CPAP machines or continuous positive airway pressure machines — CPAP therapy is the most common and effective treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea.

CPAP therapy is just one of the multiple positive airway pressure treatment options, the other two being BiPap (bilevel positive airway pressure) and APAP (automatic positive airway pressure). These three PAP treatments help patients with sleep apnea monitor their breathing throughout the night and release pressurised air to prevent respiratory failure.

A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine distributes continuous airflow at a constant pressure. An APAP (automatic positive airway pressure) machine adjusts its settings based on the changing pressure. A BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure) machine reduces the pressure when the wearer exhales. A BiPap machine has two settings; one for the inhale and one for the exhale. Learn more about these alternative machines on our product pages and find which design best suits your needs.

Sleep apnea requires lifelong ongoing treatment, meaning no matter which device you use, you will need to use it every night. Some CPAP users may consider continuing sleep therapy such as CPAP while travelling daunting, but having obstructive sleep apnea shouldn't stop you from making the most of life. It certainly shouldn't stain the idea of booking a much-needed holiday.

Why do you need a Travel CPAP Machine?

On our website at CPAP DEPOT, we have a variety of travel-friendly portable CPAP devices, as well as APAPs and BiPAPs, so all CPAP users can continue with sleep apnea therapy while travelling. The compact size makes it easier to travel light, and you won't compromise the quality of your sleep (phew). The best part — is you don't have to sacrifice the quality of your treatment; despite their size, our travel CPAP machines offer the same quality of therapy, only they are smaller and weigh less than standard CPAP machines . With varying features such as venting systems and waterless humidification, this sleek design will provide you with ongoing comfortable treatment on your next adventure.

So take advantage of the freedom these pocket-sized portable battery-operated CPAP machines enable you to experience. Expertly crafted with lifestyle at the forefront. Opting for a travel CPAP machine like the Resmed airmini ( the world's smallest CPAP device, plus it's suitable for in-flight use) allows you to get on with your life and not struggle through a bad night's sleep just because you are away from home. Bluetooth connectivity and data tracking are also available on some models to monitor your sleep data and control settings from anywhere.

Travel Accessories

In addition to choosing the right portable travel CPAP device, selecting the right accessories is crucial. Numerous CPAP masks are available, depending on the user's preference and desired fit. These include pillow masks , full face masks , and nasal masks .

Portable CPAP machines should be transported in a travel case when you're on the go. Travelling with a hard case gives you peace of mind knowing that your machine will arrive undamaged at your final location.

These benefits go a long way in ensuring you can stay connected with your CPAP treatment, irrespective of whether you are plugging it into a car, truck, caravan, airplane, boat, or any other vehicle equipped with a suitable power source.

Speak with your doctor first to obtain a proper diagnosis and before commencing CPAP treatment. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. If symptoms persist talk to your healthcare professional.

A commonly asked question is whether travel CPAP machines are just as robust and durable like the standard CPAP machines. The answer is yes. Travel CPAP machines can be used daily as well as for travel.

There are many different brands of travel CPAP machines. The most popular premium brands include ResMed Australia and Philips Respironics. The most popular budget travel CPAP machine is from Transcend.

Using your travel CPAP machine on a plane

CPAP machines are generally allowed on planes as a carry-on. However, it is prudent to check with your airline first, as not every airline permits this, nor its in-flight use, or sometimes medical clearance from a doctor is required. It is highly recommended that this is done as early as possible, as approvals and forms can often take time.

Checklist before you travel:

  • Packing your CPAP Machine – When travelling, your CPAP machine should always be packed in the original travel bag. These CPAP bags are typically compartmentalised and padded to provide support and protection for your machine, humidifier and other CPAP parts. It is highly recommended for you to bring your CPAP machine on board your flight even if you are not planning to use it on the plane. By hand carrying the device, it reduces the risk of damage to your machine.
  • Packing your humidifier – One of the most important thing to check before you pack up your humidifier chamber into your travel bag, is that the chamber is completely empty of water to avoid water damage to the machine.
  • Electrical Specification – Check the voltage range of your machine prior to travel to make sure that it is suitable with the power source at your destination country. Most new CPAP machines these days will have a Universal power supply which will support the voltage range of 100V to 240V. If your machine can only run on a specific voltage, you may need to consider bringing a voltage converter.
  • Plug Adapters and extension cords – Not all countries and hotels will have the adapters for the Australian power plug. Therefore you will definitely need to remember to bring an adapter so that you are able run your CPAP machine off the wall outlet. An extension cord may also be helpful in case if the wall outlet is too far out of reach from where you will be placing the CPAP machine at the side of the bed.
  • Surge protection – Travel surge protectors will be able to help your machine from any sudden voltage surges. This will protect your machine from any damages in the event of a surge.
  • Spare Accessories – Be prepared and bring enough accessories to last you for the duration of your trip. It is always a good idea to bring some extra filters and even spare cushion and headgear if your trip is quite long.
  • Distilled water – Make sure you have access to distilled water. Different countries have different hardness of their water and it may damage or corrode your humidifier chamber. Therefore, when travelling, it is always recommended to purchase distilled water for daily use.
  • Prescription and/or Doctor’s letter – Take a copy of these documents with you in the event that you will need to show Airport securities or if your machine breaks down and you need to purchase an urgent replacement.

Given the importance of continued treatment compliance, portability has become an important consideration with the design of these machines. Over time, the machines have become lighter and more compact, with multi-voltage power supplies for international use.

For those requiring treatment on long-haul flights or camping trips, many of the newer machines are capable of being used on most commercial aircraft and have the ability for manual or automatic altitude adjustment. External batteries, power-inverters and/or car-battery powering are optional features on some devices.

There are various styles of face mask to choose from, based on preference and desired fit, including pillow masks, full face masks, and nasal masks. We also recommend a suitable travel bag for your CPAP device while you're on the move. Are portable CPAP machines as effective as standard CPAP machines at home?

Yes, many travel CPAP machines are designed to offer the same quality of sleep apnea therapy as standard home CPAP machines.

Should I get a standard CPAP machine or a travel CPAP device?

While the benefits of portable travel CPAP machines are clear, many factors—ranging from your lifestyle to device features—can influence what the best choice is for you. Common considerations that you should factor into your decision include:

  • Durability: Travel CPAP machines have come a long way in terms of their resilience and longevity. High-end travel CPAPs have proven to be robust and suitable for daily use, providing a dependable companion for your sleep apnea therapy on the go.
  • Noise Level: It's worth noting that while some travel CPAPs can produce slightly more noise than home versions, this is typically not a significant difference. The reduction in sound insulation and some accessories, like HMEs, can contribute to the noise. However, for many users, this change is barely noticeable. If you're particularly sensitive to sound, it's a factor worth considering, but for the majority, the noise level is more than manageable.
  • Simple Operation: One of the standout features of travel CPAP devices is their straightforward operation. These devices often prioritise essential functions, omitting complicated settings or large touchscreens. The simplicity ensures that, even when you're away from home, managing your sleep apnea therapy remains hassle-free.
  • Humidification: It's crucial to be aware of the humidification limitations present in some travel CPAPs. While many provide humidification options, they might be scaled-back versions or might utilise different technologies, like HMEs. Consider your humidification needs and the climates you'll be using your CPAP in.
  • Compact and Lightweight: One of the primary reasons people opt for travel CPAP machines is their compact size and lightweight. Being several times smaller than home units, these devices are a game-changer when it comes to packing for trips. With significant weight reductions, they make travelling, whether by plane or on foot, considerably easier and more convenient.

Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine with Z-Breathe™

Product details.

Small but Powerful, the Z2 APAP machine can flow 4–20 cmH2O of pressure, satisfying the prescribed levels for most obstructive sleep apnea patients. The Z2 also utilizes HDM’s comfort-enhancing Z-Breathe™ technology, a proprietary algorithm that lowers CPAP pressure during exhalation based on your breathing pattern.

No special mask required:  The Z2 Auto does not require a special mask or tube for use. You can use your favorite mask as long as it does not have a proprietary connection.

Integrated Battery Option:  For travel off the grid or where power is limited, add on the optional  PowerShell® with New Extended Life Battery  at Check-Out, for a fully integrated battery option. The PowerShell’s Extended Life Battery is a rechargeable, lithium-ion battery which provides a full night’s therapy on a single charge. The Battery can be used only with the Z1 and Z2 Travel machines.

Special Features

  • Lightest travel CPAP Machines:  Weighing only 10.4 ounces, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and conveniently in any suitcase or bag.
  • Auto Start / Auto Stop  By Simply placing the mask on your face, the therapy will start when the device senses that you have started to breathe. When the mask is removed or there is a leak detected the Z2 will stop within seconds.
  • Z-Breathe Pressure Relief:  Z-Breathe is a comfort feature making it easier to exhale temporarily reducing the pressure during exhalation. This helps a person have a more normal breathing pattern and makes it more comfortable to use. Z-Breathe has 3 settings so you can set it to suit your own personal needs.
  • Ramp Feature:  The Z2’s Ramp feature allows you to start your pressure at a lower setting and ramp it up over time to let you adjust more gradually to CPAP therapy.
  • HME – Waterless Humidification:  The Z2 comes with a small, portable humidification cartridge called an HME (Heat Moisture Exchanger). Inserted between the hose and the mask, it captures the moisture in the exhaled breath and releases it on the inhaled breath. does not require electricity or water.
  • Reduced Noise:  The improved Z2 motor and firmware combination, along with the included Qtube, are designed to minimize both dynamic and static noise at the device and within the mask.
  • Power Supply:  When traveling abroad the power supply automatically adjust from 100 to 240 volts. All you need to add is the proper plug adapter for the country you are visiting.
  • Optional Power Shell:  The Z2 Auto CPAP is fully compatible with the optional integrated battery system called the PowerShell®. It delivers a full night of cord-free power on a fully-charged battery. The Extended Life battery is a rechargeable lithium ion battery that you can charge during the day for a night’s worth of therapy. The PowerShell is great for travel where power is limited or even off the grid.
  • Nitelog App  Download the free Nitelog® mobile app for iOS or Android and sync directly to your device with Bluetooth®. Review your data or share it with your doctor directly from the app.

7 reviews for Z2 Auto

travel cpap machines australia

Jason – April 21, 2020

I have a Z1 and a Z2. They are very similar in size and weight but the Z2 is quieter and i do like the auto on and auto off feature. I frequently travel interstate for work and this device is perfect as it’s incredibly small and light weight. I use mine with a p10 mask from Resmed which is also a very small, lightweight mask. Delivery to Sydney took 3 days from purchase. I was able claim $500 off from my health fund. Thank you to the team for answering my questions and the fast delivery.

Michael S – April 22, 2020

This is my first travel cpap machine purchase. I purchased it for my caravan so i don’t have to pack up and take my full size unit with me everytime we go away. I couldn’t believe how small and light it is! It really is an impressive little device. The noise level is fine below 10cm but does start to get a bit noisier above that. I have a p10 resmed mask and it works great with it. The tubing i find is a bit on the small size (4ft vs 6ft for standard machines). I have since purchased a 6ft tube which i find is more convenient however it does take up a bit more space. I do love how you can run it directly from a 12v plug. I would have given it 5 stars however i believe it should come with some sort of protective case to keep it in? Overall i’m very happy and can’t wait to head off on the open road. I did notice you can purchase a carry case for an extra $79 online. Thanks to Nick who answered all my extensive questions.

Bob – July 10, 2020

The reason i purchased the Z2 instead over the Air mini is that i can use my Fisher Paykel mask with the Z2 where as you can’t use it with the Air Mini. It’s also about $4000 cheaper and is a little quieter. I also like the screen as i’m not great with technology and phones. The device arrived 2 days after order and it’s easy to operate (turns on when you start breathing). Happy thus far

Missy – July 21, 2020

Had my first night with my Z2 last night. The machine is a little noisier than my full size philips machine but i was expecting that and it’s not a big difference and certainly bearable. I did find that the 4ft tubing was a little on the small size and as such have ordered a 6ft tube for $20 off ebay. The machine is ridiculously small which is why i bought it and it is also very light weight. I was able to use it with my current mask which is an amara by philips. I agree with the other comment regarding the carry case, You would think that for $1199 it would come with one but it’s not a big deal and it fits in any little camera bag. I do like having the screen and have already played around with the settings to make it suitable for my sleep. Overall i’m very happy. Postage was fast and the service has been fine. Thank you

Steven J – August 20, 2020

Simply awesome! I use it as my everyday machine now. I’v got a bit of velcro attached to the bottom and i stick it to the side of my bedside table with the tubing pointing up over my bed head. Then when i need to travel i just throw it in the cool little travel bag that was extra and away i go. It’s so small and light and very easy to use. I don’t even need to press anything to turn it on! Just breathe and on it goes. It’s marginally noisier than my other Resmed s9 unit but only just. Still very good. Delivery was very quick especially considering the pandemic. I have enjoyed watching the video lessons

Susan – August 21, 2020

Loving my new Z2! It’s so small and light and it’s just a whole lot easier than packing up my big bulky unit everytime i travel. I can just throw this in my back back and away we go! I do sometimes get a bit of a dry throat even with the HME filters but it’s not a big problem. I use mine with an eson mask from Fisher and Paykel Health

John – November 25, 2020

I was informed prior to purchase that it might be a bit too loud for me as i was on a high pressure of 16cm and unfortunately it was. I found it acceptable up to around 12 but the noise travels up the tubing making it hard to to sleep. My wife says that it sounds quieter than my ResMed AirSense however i don’t think she can hear the air coming up the tube. I must say that the help and service was first class and i was able to return it after a week for a refund minus my $15 return shipping costs. I loved everything else about the machine. It really looks incredible and perhaps they will develop quieter units for those on high pressures in the future. Thank you

The Best Travel CPAP Machines of 2023

  • Updated on January 3, 2024

At CPAP.com, we diligently maintain a thorough process to guarantee accurate information about CPAP equipment. Our expert team employs rigorous research techniques, analyzing relevant scientific publications, medical studies, and industry reports. To further ensure reliability, our content undergoes review by sleep medicine specialists and or CPAP experts. Our core commitment is to provide our readers with the most accurate, up-to-date, and science-backed information related to sleep health solutions and CPAP equipment.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure ( CPAP machines ) are the gold standard for treating  Obstructive Sleep Apnea  (OSA). Standard CPAP machines are ideal for at-home sleep apnea treatment, but if you’re planning a trip or travel frequently, you may want to consider adding a travel CPAP machine to your setup to maintain your therapy success while on the go.

If you have the travel bug and you’re in need of a capable,  portable CPAP machine , there are a handful of excellent options on the market to help you achieve the same restful sleep you’ve come to expect at home. Travel CPAP machines have many of the same comfort features as full-sized machines, such as auto start and stop functions, ramp, and pressure relief settings.

Many of today’s travel CPAP machines even offer  humidification  to keep your therapy air moist and help prevent  dry mouth ,  nose , and throat wherever your travels take you! Traditional bedside units still make for the  quietest CPAP machines , but portable options are typically only a couple of decibels louder, allowing you to enjoy whisper-quiet therapy no matter where you are.

With many dreamy options and features to consider, we understand that finding the perfect travel CPAP for you can be overwhelming, which is exactly why we’re tapping into over two decades of product knowledge and expertise to bring you this guide to the best travel CPAP machines.

Best CPAP Machines of 2023

  • Best Overall:   ResMed AirMini Travel CPAP
  • Smallest Travel CPAP:   Somnetics Transcend Micro Auto Travel CPAP
  • Quietest Travel CPAP:   Human Design Medical Z2 Auto Travel CPAP

We’ll get into the features, drawbacks, and reviews for each of these machines in just a moment. For now, let’s take a quick look at how these travel CPAP machines compare.

The Best Travel CPAP Machines Compared

Key features of a travel cpap machine.

In comparison to standard machines, travel-friendly CPAP machines are small, lightweight, and portable. If it’s your first time traveling with a CPAP machine , it’s important to note that travel machines are TSA-friendly, and most units are FAA-approved for in-flight use. If your flight is short, a small CPAP machine makes disassembly, packing, and reassembly a breeze!

If your travel machine has the waterless humidification feature, you will also need to pack your machine’s accompanying heat moisture exchange (HME) cartridge, which allows you to leave the distilled water at home. Tiny but mighty, the HME cartridges trap the humidity from your exhaled breath and recirculate it back for your inhaled breath.

It’s also important to understand how a mini CPAP machine is different from a standard machine. A portable CPAP device has some added benefits that will ease some of the stress while traveling.

A good travel CPAP machine:

  • Can Plug Into a Cigarette Lighter to Draw Power From Your Car’s Battery
  • Can Be Used With a DC Cable Converter to Allow You to Easily Sleep On-the-Go
  • Has Options for Extending the Battery Life —Perfect for Long Flights or Camping Trips
  • Is Small, Lightweight, and FAA-Compliant—Safe for Use on a Plane
  • Can Still Deliver Quality Therapy Despite Its Small Size

Now that you know some of the standard features of a travel CPAP machine, it’s time to find the right one for you!

Wow, this little machine is awesome — 5 Stars: “As a former owner of a Dreamstation Go, which was recalled, I needed a replacement. Not only is it smaller, it is quieter and it is so simple to operate. Using for both travel and home. So far it’s working great. Just put the mask on, go to sleep and take it off in the morning. The Mini automatically starts and stops, quickly. And in Auto mode it automatically ramps the pressure.” Verified Purchase 08/06/2023

ResMed AirMini Travel CPAP Machine Details

Why we chose this machine.

  • Compact and Convenient Design: The AirMini is a game-changer for travelers seeking a CPAP machine that’s easy to pack and carry. Its palm-sized dimensions make it incredibly convenient, and the HumidX system eliminates the need for a separate humidifier, saving you even more space in your luggage.
  • Advanced Features for On-the-Go Therapy: The AirMini is not just compact; it’s also smart. With Bluetooth connectivity, you can track important metrics like leak rate, usage hours, and events per hour directly on your smartphone via the AirMini companion app. This ensures you maintain effective therapy, even while you’re away from home.
  • Versatility and Compatibility: Initially, the AirMini was compatible with only a few specific ResMed masks. However, the introduction of the  Zephair AirMini Universal Adapter  has expanded your options, allowing you to use any standard hose and mask with the device. This gives you the freedom to choose the best setup for your needs.
  • Sound and Noise Considerations: While some users have noted that the AirMini is not as quiet as some full-sized machines, its noise level is comparable to white noise. If you usually travel with a sound machine, the AirMini’s noise level might allow you to leave that extra device at home.

This Machine is Ideal For:

  • Frequent Flyers: The AirMini is perfect for those who are always on the move. Its compact size and advanced features make it an ideal choice for frequent travelers who don’t want to compromise on their CPAP therapy.
  • Tech Lovers: If you like to keep track of your therapy data, the AirMini’s Bluetooth connectivity and app features will be a big plus for you. Monitor your therapy effectiveness easily through your smartphone.
  • Those Who Value Convenience: With its space-saving design and waterless humidification system, the AirMini is perfect for anyone looking to simplify their travel packing without sacrificing comfort or effectiveness.
  • Users in Varied Climates: The availability of HumidX Plus cartridges makes the AirMini adaptable for use in more arid climates and higher elevations, ensuring you get the right level of humidification wherever you go.

By offering a blend of convenience, advanced features, and versatility, the ResMed AirMini sets the standard for travel CPAP machines. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who values effective therapy on the go, despite a slightly higher price point.

I was looking for a better travel solution so I thought I would give it a try. I have the mini but it never worked properly either too much air or not enough. This micro seems to do the job well.

Transcend Micro Machine Details

Introducing the Transcend Micro Auto from Somnetics, the newest and smallest travel CPAP machine that has taken the title of “World’s Smallest CPAP” from the ResMed AirMini. Despite its compact size—weighing less than half a pound and about the size of a baseball—this machine is packed with features you’d expect from a full-sized unit. From automatic pressure adjustments and ramp technology to a unique drying mode and waterless humidification, the Transcend Micro Auto is a powerhouse in a petite package.

Machine Features

  • Unmatched Portability: The Transcend Micro Auto is a marvel of compact size. Its incredibly small size and lightweight design make it the ultimate travel companion, easily fitting into any travel bag.
  • Comprehensive Features: Don’t let its size fool you; this machine comes with all the features you’d expect from a larger unit. Automatic pressure adjustments, ramp technology, and an adjustable pressure relief setting ensure you get a comfortable and effective therapy experience.
  • Innovative Additions: What sets this machine apart is its unique features, like the drying mode, which is perfect for off-the-grid adventures where you can’t air-dry your equipment. It also comes with built-in sound and vibration-dampening technology and a WhisperSoft Muffler to reduce noise.
  • Versatility and Compatibility: Perhaps, most importantly, the Transcend Micro is compatible with virtually any CPAP mask, except for masks that are specifically designed for other machines, such as the AirMini-only masks like the AirFit N30 for AirMini or the AirFit P10 for AirMini . The upcoming Reusable PureFresh Air Filters are designed to last around six months, adding to the machine’s convenience.
  • Adventure Seekers: If you love camping or traveling off-the-grid, the Transcend Micro’s drying mode is a game-changer, helping to prevent mold and bacteria build-up in your equipment.
  • Those Who Value Quietness: Thanks to its WhisperSoft Muffler and sound dampening technology, this machine offers a quiet operation, allowing you a peaceful night’s sleep wherever you are.
  • Users Looking for Low Maintenance: With its reusable air filters that last up to six months and waterless humidification, the Transcend Micro Auto is perfect for those who want a low-maintenance machine.
  • Compatibility Seekers: If you already have a favorite CPAP mask, chances are it will be compatible with the Transcend Micro, giving you the freedom to use the equipment you’re most comfortable with.

While the Transcend Micro Auto does have some limitations, such as the lack of support for a full humidifier and some initial app issues, its benefits far outweigh these minor drawbacks. It’s a robust and versatile addition to the travel CPAP market, and we believe it will stand the test of time. Keep an eye out for updates on the availability of Transcend HMEs for waterless humidification and replacement air filters.

HDM Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine Details

Meet the HDM Z2 Auto Travel CPAP Machine, a lightweight marvel in the world of travel CPAP devices. Weighing in at just 0.65 lbs, it’s even lighter than the AirMini, yet it doesn’t compromise on features. The Z2 stands out for its display screen—a feature missing in both the AirMini and Transcend Micro. This allows you to access your therapy information directly on the machine, making it an excellent choice for off-the-grid adventures. Coupled with its proprietary waterless humidification system and the included Q-Lite CPAP Muffler , the Z2 is designed to make your travels as comfortable as possible.

  • Lightweight and Ultra-Portable: The Z2 is incredibly lightweight, making it an ideal travel companion. Its compact design ensures it fits almost anywhere, making it easy to carry on flights or take along on camping trips.
  • On-Screen Display for Off-the-Grid Use: Unlike its competitors, the Z2 features a display screen that allows you to access and adjust your therapy settings without needing a mobile app. This is particularly useful when you’re in areas without cell service.
  • Quiet Operation with Q-Lite Muffler: The Z2 comes with a Q-Lite CPAP Muffler to minimize noise, allowing you to enjoy the serenity of nature when you’re camping. While it’s challenging for travel CPAPs to be as quiet as full-sized units, the Z2 makes an extra effort to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.
  • Innovative Humidification: The Z2 uses a Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) unit for its humidification, utilizing the moisture from your exhaled breath to humidify the incoming air. While not as effective as traditional humidifiers, it’s a practical solution for light travel.
  • Off-the-Grid Adventurers: If you love camping or backpacking in remote areas, the Z2’s on-screen display and waterless humidification make it a perfect choice.
  • Budget-Conscious Travelers: The Z2 offers a great price-to-value ratio, making it an excellent choice for those looking for an affordable yet feature-rich travel CPAP machine.

Detailed Buying Guides for CPAP Machines

Best CPAP Machines Overall

  • Quietest CPAP Machines

The Smallest CPAP Machines

Consider the Following Before Purchasing a Travel CPAP:

When it comes to finding your ideal travel machine, we think it’s important that you are armed with the knowledge to make the best purchasing decision for your specific sleep apnea therapy needs. For this reason, we’ve created a handy buying guide of things to consider when shopping for a travel-sized CPAP machine.

Portability

The very first thing you should consider is what situations you’ll most commonly be using your new CPAP machine in. Frequent and infrequent travelers have different needs; some people may want a dedicated travel machine while others may simply prefer a bedside unit that happens to be easy to travel with.

Most dedicated travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, but more traditional units may not be. Someone who does more camping than flying may prefer a more barebones unit that’s simple to operate when off-the-grid over a machine with more bells and whistles.

In terms of pricing, travel CPAP machines are typically more affordable than their full-sized counterparts—though you can still expect to spend around $600 to $900 for a compact machine from a reputable brand. Many of these travel machines pack in as much value as they can, and in comparison to your bedside unit (especially if both machines are from the same manufacturer), most travel machines will feature the same or similar comfort features. They will also commonly include a travel case or pouch as well as any power accessories you’ll need to get it running. Most travel machines will also let you use the same mask as your home machine, saving you some money on an additional mask or tubing.

Doctor’s Recommendations

Since you can’t buy a CPAP machine without a prescription , you may have already talked with your healthcare provider about the best equipment for your needs. Whether there are specific machine settings or comfort features you require or there’s a particular mask style that works best for you, be sure that the machine you’re considering will be able to deliver the therapy you deserve.

Sound Level

CPAP technology has come a long way in reducing the sound level of portable CPAP machines, and most modern devices are only slightly noisier than their full-sized counterparts. Some machines, like the HDM Z2 and Transcend Micro, even include tube mufflers for a more whisper-quiet experience. Some owners report that their travel machines, while quiet, do operate at a higher pitch than their home machine, but most people find themselves easily drifting to sleep with a brief adjustment period or a good pair of earplugs. If you prefer to sleep with a bit of sound anyway, you might find that your travel CPAP machine doubles as a dreamy white noise machine, too!

Machine Type

If you’ve been using CPAP therapy at home on a different device, there’s a good chance that your travel CPAP machine will give you a different experience. Due to size constraints and engineering hurdles, a pressure setting on your bedside unit may not behave the same way on a travel machine. Even if both are set to 12 cm H2O, the experience still may be different.

For this reason, we recommend traveling with an APAP machine . It’s much easier to let the machine react to your needs rather than relying on a set pressure that may not be enough for you at the moment or feels weaker from your travel machine.

Comfort Features (Ramp, AutoStart, Pressure Relief, etc.)

Outside of doctor’s recommendations, you may personally prefer or even require specific comfort settings such as ramp or auto start/stop. Be sure that the machine you’re considering has the features that are most important to you for a restful sleep apnea therapy experience.

This also applies to humidifier usage; if you’re someone who requires a standard humidifier or if you’re traveling to a drier climate where you might need one, your options will decrease. However, if you’re content with utilizing waterless humidification, you can save yourself from having to pack distilled water and travel lighter in the process.

Data Tracking

If data tracking is essential to you, you might consider a more high-tech option with real-time reporting to the machine’s compatible cellphone app. Keep in mind that some travel machines can’t sync or view data until you’re back home with your PC.

Accessories

Accessories for a travel CPAP device include things like external batteries for charging or operating your machine, a travel case or carrying bag to protect your equipment, tubing or mask adapters (such as the Zephair Universal AirMini Adapter), or waterless humidification devices (heat moisture exchange units). When you decide on your travel machine budget, be sure to factor in the cost of any additional travel accessories you’d like as well.

Most travel machines have a two-year warranty, though there are some longer and shorter exceptions. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s warranty for your device to be clear on whether or not it protects you in situations you may find yourself in while traveling.

FAA Approval

As we mentioned earlier, most travel CPAP machines are FAA-approved and TSA-friendly, though it never hurts to double-check with the manufacturer’s specifications. Some airlines will also have different rules/requirements than others, so be sure to inquire about any policies they may have regarding CPAP machine use in flight.

Power Consumption/Requirements

Most machines can run off of outlets in almost any country with the appropriate travel plug adapter. Still, it’s always a good idea to be familiar with where you’re traveling and the power draw of your machine. For camping and off-the-grid activities like RV travel , it’s also important to know if you’ll need to add any adapters or inverters to your CPAP setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do travel cpap machines cost.

Cheaper travel CPAP machines start in the neighborhood of $600 and can be as expensive as $1,200. On average, you’ll spend about $800 for a quality travel machine.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of a Travel CPAP Machine?

While it’s always encouraged to check these specifics with your insurance company, many will not cover the cost of a travel CPAP.

Can I Use a Regular Mask With My Travel CPAP?

In most cases, yes! Most travel machines will include a hose or mask adapter or be universally compatible. We also offer additional adapters to work around some machine restrictions.

Can I Use a Travel CPAP at Home?

Yes! A travel CPAP machine is perfectly capable of delivering quality therapy as a full-time home unit. It is worth noting, however, that parts in your travel machine may wear more or show their age more quickly than on a larger unit. You should also consider how important a suite of comfort features is to you, as travel machines may not have the same capabilities in that regard.

Can I Use a Travel CPAP In-Flight?

Yes! If a device is FAA-approved, then you can use it during the flight as long as you meet the requirements of your airliner. Examples of some requirements would be requiring a 48-hour approval notice before the flight or requiring a separate CPAP battery with a capacity equal to or greater than 150% of the expected flight time. Check with your airline for more details.

Final Thoughts

Wherever and however you’ll be traveling, there is a compact CPAP machine suitable for your trip! Luckily, you don’t have to sacrifice a good night’s sleep without proper sleep apnea therapy on your next adventure.

Remember: The best travel CPAP machine is the one that will give you a therapy experience that’s closest to what you’re used to getting at home. Traveling can disrupt the usual cadence and rhythm of our lives, initiating a stress response in the body. By finding a semi-familiar product that will help you maintain your CPAP routine on the go, you’ll be setting yourself up for a healthier and happier trip overall.

Safe travels!

Thank you for providing the information and will be useful in determining my purchase. What is missing however are the negatives features of each type. I believe the level of noise and whether the hoses/mask accommodate all types or are proprietary are important to mention. Thank you very much

We’re coming out with a series of posts soon that will address some of these concerns. Thanks for the feedback! We actually recently published a post on the quietest masks, if you navigate to our blog homepage you should see it.

I have used the Z1 with the newer extended battery pack for camping and have been able to get 3 nights in warmer fall weather or 2 nights in colder weather with it. I keep the CPAP in my sleeping bag to keep it warm and the air that I am inhaling. The short hose is also helpful for keeping the overall weight and size down in my backpack.

Hi Mike, the Z1 is a great machine and we are happy to hear that you are getting great run time with your battery.

We wish you the best!

DreamStation Go now has a humidifier which in my opinion makes it the best choice.

In airplanes flying above 8,000 ft. Is use based on adjusted cabin pressure?

Hi Gail, most CPAP machines have the auto-adjust according to altitude feature built into the machine. In order for us to know for certain, if your machine has this feature, we would need to know which machine you have.

Please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you can e-mail us at: [email protected] .

Have a great day!

I have the transcend machine and I think it works well for my traveling, which has taken us around the world in the last several years.

Hi Pat, I am happy to hear that your Transcend is working out well for you.

We wish you continued success!

I have a Transcend mi ni and I feel like Darth Vader when I use it. It seems so loud, I don’t. Any suggestions?

Hi Susan, i’m sorry to hear that your machine is noisy. Please give us a call at: 1-800-356-5221, or e-mail us your contact information at: [email protected] Attn: Carol, for a callback so that we can go through some troubleshooting steps.

We hope to hear from you soon!

is the air mini usable on safari trips in AFRICA? do they work on cruise ships also? I am considering purchasing the air mini for travel and not sure about its working capabilities outside the USA. are their precaution needed for safety of the equipment?

Hi Ann, yes. The AirMini, will work in Africa and on cruise ships. Please keep in mind that you will need a power adapter for the power outlet of the country you will be traveling to. Please see the link below to get a better idea as to what I’m referring to.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/World-Traveler-Power-Adapter-Plugs-CPAP

Also, if you will be without power during your trip, you may consider adding a battery with your machine. Please see the link to view a battery that will work with the AirMini.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/medistrom-pilot-24-lite-battery

Finally, keep in mind that you may have Bluetooth connectivity issues depending on the internet availability in the locations you’ll be traveling to. This will not interfere with your ability to use your machine, but your therapy data may not be available until you have access to internet connection.

For further questions, or concerns, we can be reached at: 1-800-356-5221.

I wish you safe travels!

Hello- Is there a machine on the market that is good for everyday use as well as compact enough for occasional travel? I know the travel only machines are super compact, but I’m really looking for something smaller then my Resmed 10 home machine so I can travel easier with it. Any suggestions?

Hey Mark, there are many compact machines available. Please see the link below to view a few machines that are small and easy to travel with.

https://www.cpap.com/compare-chart/all-Self-Adjusting-CPAP/2o35

If there are specific features the machine must have, please feel free to contact us at: 1-800-356-5221, to discuss your needs.

Have a great weekend!

What would prevent a CPAP user from purchasing a travel CPAP and using it at home and travel? What are the limitations, pros & cons?

Hey Deb, the functionality, of the home and travel machine are the same. They both blow the same amount of air according to the pressure settings. The main differences between a home and travel machines are the size. Most of the travel machines are smaller than the regular machines, but keep in mind that for the most part the travel machines will be a bit noisier than the regular home machines.

Also, most of the travel machines have an option for waterless humidification, but not a standard humidifier. There are a few travel machines, that have an option to add a humidifier, but they will add size to the unit, in some cases, making the travel machine almost the same size as the home unit.

If you travel a lot, and are looking for a smaller machine and don’t require a standard humidifier, the travel machine would be a great option for you.

If you wish to speak with us further regarding machine options, or anything else, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221.

Going to Africa and will be in the bush for several nights without power. How many nights does the multi night battery last? How can you re-charge the multi night battery? Cigarette lighter/DC? Solar?

Hi Lisa, The manufacturer tested this battery with the several Transcend series machines and found it could generate approximately 14 hours of run time on a pressure setting of 14. Certain factors like altitude, pressure setting, temperature, machine type, and if you use humidification can all factor into run times. Individual results may vary.

The battery is charged using the Transcend Travel machine’s power supply. The power supply is plugged into a wall outlet and into the battery.

There is an option for DC charge by using the Transcend DC Mobile Power Adapter Second Gen and Solar is an option also with the Solar Charger for Transcend Batteries.

For further questions, or concerns, please feel free to reach us at: 1-800-356-5221, or you may e-mail us at: [email protected] .

Have a wonderful and safe trip to Africa!

If you’re one of the roughly 30 million people with sleep apnea , 1 you may use a CPAP machine at night. These machines work with a CPAP mask and use gentle air pressure to keep breathing passages open while you sleep. But what should you use when you travel?

Travel can bring culture and adventure to people of all ages and provide numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits that contribute to healthy aging. Recent research highlighted how tourism can enhance cognitive function and improve mental health in older adults. 2   Still, lugging your CPAP machine along on your trip might seem inconvenient. That’s where travel CPAP machines come in.

These portable models are smaller and lighter than standard CPAP machines, and they’re often designed with extra features to ensure you get the most out of your travel experience, whether you’re traveling by car, train, or plane. When our Reviews Team surveyed 600 CPAP users in July 2023, 30% of respondents reported using their regular CPAP machine when they travel, while just over 21% said they use a travel CPAP machine.

Quality sleep is essential for our overall well-being, which is why our Reviews Team researched the best travel-friendly CPAP machines , so you can prioritize your health and well-being during your adventures.

The best CPAP machines for travel

Resmed airmini autoset travel cpap machine.

 Logo

Weighing less than a pound, the ResMed AirMini is highly portable. We chose it as our “Editor’s Pick” CPAP machine for travel due to its compact size, advanced features, and positive reviews.

During our research, we found most users were happy with their purchase and the therapy they received from the ResMed AirMini, especially due to the features that enhance its usability and convenience:

  • Bluetooth connectivity:  With Bluetooth, you can connect your machine to the  AirMini app on your smartphone or tablet, enabling you to track your therapy data (time of use, number of apnea events, and mask seal strength), adjust pressure and mode settings, and receive feedback with a nightly sleep score.
  • Pressure modes/range:  The ResMed AirMini offers a wide pressure range, which accommodates a variety of therapy needs. It can deliver continuous positive airway pressure, as well as auto-adjusting pressure (APAP) based on the user’s breathing patterns and prescription. APAP mode was designed for people whose sleeping patterns change during sleep and delivers lower pressure upon exhalation, often making it more comfortable for the user.
  • AutoRamp technology:  This technology can help you fall asleep easier because it starts out at a lower, more comfortable pressure while you’re awake and adjusts up to prescribed levels once you have fallen asleep.
  • Waterless humidification:  HumidX keeps your airways from drying out without adding water. It’s achieved by inserting special filters into the mask and is available with four of the five mask kit options offered by ResMed.
  • In-flight use:  The ResMed AirMini is FAA-compliant for use on airplanes. Since this model requires a power source, consider requesting a seat near an outlet. If you’re traveling internationally, ask your airline in advance if you should bring an adapter.

At $999–$1,349, this is the most expensive machine we reviewed, with the price depending on the mask you select. It’s important to note only ResMed masks are compatible with this machine. The five kits to choose from all come with humidification cartridges, tubing, and a mask. If you’re unhappy with your purchase, ResMed offers a rare 30-day, risk-free trial.

Customer reviews

ResMed has  4.3 out of 5 stars  on Trustpilot with more than 4,500 reviews, as of December 2023. Customers repeatedly mentioned excellent customer service and quick attention to repairs or replacements when necessary.

On Google, the AirMini specifically has  4.5 out of 5 stars , with positive reviews praising the quality of therapy, quiet function, and the convenience of the waterless humidifier component. One reviewer noted how it fit in his shirt pocket, making it an effective travel machine. Complaints primarily focused on masks from other brands not being compatible, and while some people thought the machine was quiet, others complained it was louder than other machines they’ve used.

Transcend Micro Auto CPAP Machine

travel cpap machines australia

The Transcend CPAP machine takes the title of “Best Compact” travel CPAP machine due to its incredibly small size and lightweight design—it’s the approximate size and shape of a baseball. This machine is specifically built for travel, making it exceptionally portable and easy to pack. Despite its compact size, it offers a wide pressure range of 4–20 centimeters of water (cmH20) ⓘ This is the unit of pressure based on the pressure head of water. It’s most commonly used to measure breathing on respirators and ventilators.. , allowing for personalized therapy. Plus, its multiple power-source options make it ideal for use on an airplane.

The Transcend Micro Auto CPAP comes with the following features:

  • Portable power options:  The optional battery pack and solar charger make this machine versatile for use in different travel settings, especially where you may not have access to an AC outlet. The P8 battery lasts for two nights and costs an additional $319. You can also purchase a solar charger for $250 that will charge the P8 battery with the sun (even in low-light settings), so it’s great for weeklong camping trips or other extended time away from electricity.
  • EZEX Pressure Relief:  During exhalation, this function provides automatic reduction in pressure, which may make it more comfortable. This is a similar feature to the APAP mode setting on the AirMini.
  • Gentle rise:  This is an auto ramp feature, which lets you fall asleep to a lower, more comfortable pressure that ramps up gradually once you’re asleep. You can also adjust this feature, so you can set specific ramp times or even turn it off.
  • Bluetooth connectivity:  The  MySleepDash app  offers guided setup, setting adjustments, and records data, allowing users and health care professionals to monitor therapy progress.
  • Drying mode:  You can remove built-up moisture inside the machine and tubing by activating a 30-minute “drying mode” cycle in the morning. This helps it stay dry and can reduce contamination.
  • WhisperSoft Muffler :  This is an accessory placed in line with the tubing, so it functions like a muffler and reduces the sound of air passing through the tubing.

This machine does not come with waterless humidification, like the AirMini, but you can add the  Transcend AirMist accessory  for $18.95 for the same result.

As of December 1, 2023, customer reviews for Transcend are minimal. The brand isn’t rated by Trustpilot and can’t be found on the BBB.

On Google, the machine has  4.3 out of 5 stars , with users praising how small it is and generally agreeing it’s an efficient machine for travel. It was also noted how quiet it is, even without the muffler. One negative review complained they didn’t like the fact you have to buy the humidifier separately.

To reach Transcend customer service, call 866-978-9481, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT. You can also visit the “Contact Customer Care” section to fill out an online  inquiry form .

Breas Z2 Auto CPAP Machine

 Logo

We gave the Breas Z2 Auto CPAP Machine the title of “Best Value” due to its affordability and helpful features. This machine provides exceptional value for those seeking a cost-effective yet high-quality CPAP solution.

The Breas Z2 Auto CPAP comes with the following features:

  • Bluetooth connectivity:  The  Nightlog app  lets you adjust settings on your machine and view and download sleep-tracking data to share with your physician.
  • Auto-adjusting pressure:  This function uses advanced algorithms (a Breas algorithm called Z-Breathe) to automatically adjust the pressure based on the user’s breathing patterns. It will reduce pressure upon exhalation in order to be more comfortable for the user. This APAP functionality is in all of the machines in our review. Additionally, this machine can also be used with fixed pressure (standard CPAP) settings.
  • In-flight pressure adjustment:  The Breas Z2’s auto-adjusting pressure has you covered on land and in the air. On airplanes, it automatically adjusts to the cabin’s pressure.
  • Auto start/stop:  The machine detects when you put on or remove your mask and starts or stops accordingly.
  • Ramp feature:  Like the other machines in this review, the Breas Z2 allows the user to fall asleep at a lower pressure setting, then gradually ramps up the pressure once you have gone to sleep.
  • Waterless humidification:  Similar to how the AirMini has waterless humidification, this machine comes with a humidifier cartridge, allowing users to enjoy the benefits of added moisture during therapy without needing to search for water.
  • Rechargeable battery option:  When fully charged, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides one night’s use.
  • Ultra-quiet operation:  At 26 decibels (for reference, 30 decibels is like a whisper), the AirMini is the quietest machine on our list.
  • Automatic voltage conversion:  The power supply converts any voltage ranging from 100–240 volts; you just need the proper plug for the country you visit.

This machine is not quite as tech-savvy and easy to use as the first two on our list, with some reviewers complaining the interface isn’t always user-friendly. It’s also larger than both the AirMini and Transcend Mico, but it still offers a well-reviewed portable option for a decent price.

Since the company is not profiled on Trustpilot or BBB, online reviews are hard to find.

On Google, the Breas Z2 Auto has  4.1 out of 5 stars . Reviewers liked its portability, with some even commenting how they could use it every day, while negative reviews were primarily about it being a noisier machine (despite it being a low-decibel machine) and with some complaining functionality could be better.

Apex XT Auto CPAP Machine

 Logo

We ranked the Apex Medical XT Auto Portable CPAP Machine as the “Most Affordable” on our list because it’s a cost-effective and versatile solution for your sleep apnea therapy while traveling. In our Reviews Team’s CPAP survey, price was one of the top five considerations when purchasing a CPAP machine for over 60% of respondents.

The Apex XT Auto comes with the following features:

  • Pressure Variation Algorithm :  Designed to relieve discomfort during exhalation, it works by automatically reducing pressure, making it easier to breathe out, similar to other APAP operation modes.
  • Built-in power supply:  With this model, you don’t have to deal with an external power brick. While this means you don’t have to carry around an extra accessory to power your CPAP, you do have to plug it into the wall, so make sure to have an extension cord if needed.
  • Ramp feature:  Like the other options on this list, this model offers a ramp feature that gradually increases pressure after falling asleep to prescribed levels over a 45-minute duration.
  • Automatic altitude adjustment:  If you need to use your CPAP on a plane, this feature will adjust pressure for different altitudes.
  • Optional heated humidifier:  Designed to prevent dry mouth and throat, this accessory comes as a tank that attaches directly to the machine. Unfortunately, it requires the addition of water and adds quite a bit of bulk.

While this machine collects data, it does not have an app, so your information is stored on an SD card, which can be inserted into a computer. For some, the lack of an app could be a deal-breaker.

Apex has limited reviews online and doesn’t have a presence on BBB or Trustpilot.

On Google, the Apex Medical XT has  4.2 stars out of 5 . While most reviewers found it a suitable machine for travel with good function, negative reviews centered on the humidifier being bulky and the pressure being too high at times.

Apex doesn’t offer many ways to contact them for assistance. You can visit the brand’s website and fill out an  online request form , or you can message the company through  LinkedIn . No phone number or email address is provided on the website.

The company is in the midst of a merger with Wellell, which has its own website. Wellell can be contacted by calling 714-671-3818 or filling out an  online request form .

How to choose a travel CPAP machine

When choosing a travel CPAP machine, there are several things you should take into account to ensure you find the right fit. Here are some important factors to think about:

  • CPAP machines deliver a constant and steady air pressure to keep the airway open during sleep.
  • Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines provide two different set pressure levels: a higher pressure during inhalation and a lower pressure during exhalation.
  • APAP machines are designed to automatically adjust the pressure throughout the night based on a person’s needs.
  • In-flight use of CPAP machines is permitted by airlines. Some, but not all, CPAP machines are equipped for in-flight use.
  • Price: Consider your budget and compare the prices of different travel CPAP machines. While cost is important, it’s crucial to balance affordability and essential features.
  • Weight: Look for a lightweight CPAP machine that won’t add excessive bulk to your travel luggage, making it easier to carry and reduce strain while on the go. The machines in our review all weigh less than 1–2 pounds, while in-home machines are much larger and heavier.
  • Noise level: Look for models offering quiet or near-silent operation to minimize sleep disruptions for yourself and your travel companions. Travel CPAP machines tend to be slightly noisier than at-home units because they lack the space for noise-masking technology, but even travel machines can be “whisper quiet.” Anything less than 30 decibels should be comfortable for sleeping.
  • Pressure range: Check the pressure range of the CPAP machine to ensure it meets your prescribed therapy requirements. But if your prescription is outside the 4-20 range, it may be more difficult to find a travel machine to meet your needs. Some machines offer auto-adjusting pressure capabilities, which can be beneficial for accommodating changing needs during travel.
  • Ramp settings: Consider whether the CPAP machine has ramp settings. These settings allow for a gradual increase in pressure, which can make it more comfortable to fall asleep.
  • Physician recommendations: Your doctor may have specific recommendations for you based on your preferences and your prescription and needs. Most doctors work closely with a few brands and are more familiar and comfortable with those particular machines. Popular manufacturers are ResMed, Apex, and Phllips. Note: Phillips recalled all CPAP machines made before April 2021 . 3
  • Data tracking: Evaluate whether the CPAP machine provides data tracking capabilities. Data tracking allows you to monitor your hours of sleep, pressure settings, number of apnea events, and quality of mask fit, providing valuable insights into your sleep quality and treatment effectiveness.
  • Smart features: Look for CPAP machines with smart features, such as Bluetooth connectivity and mobile apps. These features can enable remote monitoring, data analysis, and customization of settings, such as auto-ramp and BiPAP/APAP/CPAP mode selection, for a more personalized experience.
  • Accessories: Consider the availability of compatible accessories, such as portable battery packs, travel cases, or mask options. The type of travel will determine the importance of specific accessories.

How to purchase a travel CPAP machine

Do i need a prescription.

It’s required to have a prescription for a CPAP machine, including travel CPAP machines. A prescription ensures the machine is set to the appropriate pressure levels for your specific needs. Consult with your health care provider to obtain a prescription for a travel CPAP machine.

Will insurance cover the cost of a travel CPAP machine?

The coverage of a travel CPAP machine by insurance varies depending on your insurance provider and specific plan. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost of a CPAP machine, including travel models if it’s deemed medically necessary. In our survey, 56% of respondents reported using Medicare or private health insurance to help pay for their CPAP machines. It’s advisable to contact your insurance provider directly to ask about coverage and any necessary documentation. If you already own a standard-size CPAP machine, insurance companies are unlikely to also cover an additional travel model.

Read our full guide to learn more about Medicare coverage of CPAP machines .

Where can I buy a travel CPAP machine?

You may purchase a travel CPAP machine at a medical supply store or online through the manufacturer’s website or a medical supply retailer. Here are three reputable medical supply websites:

  • Oxygen Concentrator Store
  • Apria Direct
  • SleepDoctor

Payment options

ResMed, Transcend, and Apex accept all major credit cards, and both ResMed and Transcend accept PayPal as well. Those three brands also offer financing. Breas doesn’t sell its CPAP machines on its website and instead refers customers to online and local retailers.

Medicare and some private health insurance policies may cover a portion of your CPAP machine. CPAP machines are always eligible for payment through FSA/HSA accounts.

Comparison of best travel CPAP machines, as of December 2023

How to travel with a cpap machine.

Traveling with a CPAP machine requires some preparation and adherence to certain guidelines. Here’s a guide on how to travel with a CPAP machine and the essential items to bring along:

  • Ensure FAA approval: If you plan to use your CPAP machine during a flight, ensure your specific model is FAA approved. Most travel CPAP machines meet the FAA guidelines, but it’s always recommended to double-check with the manufacturer or your health care provider.
  • Carry-on or checked baggage: It’s advisable to carry your CPAP machine as a carry-on item rather than checking it with your luggage. This helps ensure its safety and accessibility during the journey. Generally, CPAP machines do not count toward your carry-on limit because they are medical devices.
  • Batteries: If you anticipate situations where you may not have access to a power source, consider bringing spare batteries or a portable battery pack for your CPAP machine. This is especially useful during flights, camping trips, or in areas with limited electricity.
  • Humidifier: Depending on your personal preference and the environmental conditions at your destination, you may want to bring your CPAP machine’s humidifier. The humidifier helps add moisture to the air, reducing potential dryness or discomfort during therapy. Some machines even have climate control features that automatically adjust to humidity and temperature changes around you.
  • Other accessories: Remember to pack your CPAP mask, headgear, and extra filters so you can replace them as needed during your trip. You may also want to consider bringing your preferred CPAP-compatible pillows, which are designed to accommodate the mask and tubing for comfort and stability while you sleep. Depending on your needs and preferences, additional accessories, such as tubing, chin straps, mask wipes, or power adapters, may also be a good idea. Remember to check the voltage compatibility of your CPAP machine if traveling internationally.

By following these guidelines and ensuring you have the necessary items and accessories, you can travel with your CPAP machine comfortably and maintain your sleep therapy routine while away from home.

Bottom line

Travel is important to the health and happiness of older adults, many of whom require the use of a CPAP machine to treat sleep apnea. We know untreated sleep apnea leads to many negative health effects . It has been linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack/stroke, obesity , 4 and dementia . 5 Fortunately, there are several well-reviewed, affordable options for travel-specific models.

  • The ResMed AirMini is a dependable, well-liked model.
  • The Transcend Auto is the size of a baseball, so it’s lightweight and easy to pack.
  • The Breas Z2 Auto provides great value at just under $900.
  • The Apex XT Auto is the most affordable machine on our list at $449.

Frequently asked questions

Generally, a CPAP machine does not count toward your carry-on limit when flying. It’s considered a medical device and allowed as an additional carry-on item. When traveling, make sure to carry your CPAP machine in a case. You can store it in the overhead bin or below your seat.

Yes, travel CPAP machines are designed to work as effectively as standard CPAP machines. They provide the necessary therapy and pressure settings to treat sleep apnea while offering a more compact and portable design for travel convenience.

Many travel CPAP machines can be used daily, despite being made for travel. Like standard CPAP machines, they are designed to provide consistent and reliable therapy for sleep apnea patients. But some travel CPAP machines may lack certain features, like humidifiers. Depending on your needs and preferences, it may be best to use your portable CPAP machine only when you travel.

The lifespan of a travel CPAP machine can vary depending on usage, maintenance, and the specific model. On average, travel CPAP machines can last five years with proper care and regular maintenance.

In most cases, you can use your regular CPAP mask with a new travel CPAP machine. But it’s important to ensure compatibility between the mask and the specific model of the travel CPAP machine. It’s recommended to consult the manufacturer or your health care provider to confirm compatibility or consider purchasing a mask specifically designed for travel CPAP machines if needed. Not all machines accommodate all masks.

In general, you can use a travel CPAP machine on a plane if it’s FAA-approved for in-flight use. Check to see if your model uses FAA-compliant rechargeable lithium batteries as well. Keep in mind that different airlines may have specific requirements, so it’s best to check with your airline before arriving for your flight.

The Smallest and Lightest Travel CPAP on the Market.

Restful Sleep Everywhere, Every night

The New Transcend Micro TM is the world’s smallest and lightest Travel CPAP available in the market-weighing just 218 grams and only 9.1 cm in diameter.  It is that small and light!  Featuring unique air-bearing technology and vibration dampening, the Transcend Micro at only 27db has been designed to provide a comfortable and successful night’s sleep even in the most remote locations with the optional multi-night battery . The Transcend Micro is compatible with any CPAP mask, so you can in most instances use your current mask* and track sleep metrics on your phone .

*The Transcend Micro can be used with any mask except those that have been designed specifically for other machines.  In those instances, you may require an adaptor.

Restful sleep Everywhere, Every night

Transcend micro your go-to travel cpap..

Planning and packing for your next travel adventure is now even easier with the new Transcend Micro Travel CPAP.  Only 9.1 cm in diameter and only 218 grams, the Transcend Micro allows you to find room in your luggage to place your CPAP, where space and weight is at a premium especially when travelling by plane, ship caravan or even while camping outdoors.

Transcend P8*

Multi-night cpap battery.

The Transcend Micro comes with an AC (wall) power adaptor for when you are at home or at a hotel. When away from a fixed power source, the Transcend PowerAway™ P8 portable battery is an ideal option.  The PowerAway P8 battery can power your Transcend Micro CPAP for up to 14 hours of run time depending on factors such as pressure setting*. The PowerAway P8 Battery is the ideal option for flights, travels to remote locations off the grid or camping in the outdoors.

Sleep Data Tracking App

Transcend mysleepdash tm app.

The Transcend Micro like most popular travel CPAPs does not have a screen to view your sleep metrics or generate a report. To see your sleep metrics and generate a report you will need to connect to a device with a screen. Transcend provides the CPAP user wth two options by which you can review your data, change your comfort settings ( Gentle rise TM and Air relief TM )*, and generate a report. The first option is through your smartphone (Apple or Android) and the other through windows desktop software.

Note: You do not need the app to operate the Transcend Micro machine.

Transcend Muffler

Transcend whispersoft tm muffler.

Transcend Micro has a sound level of 27 dB the same as a person whispering.  Unlike standard Home CPAPs, which are much larger and heavier, Travel CPAPs, being smaller and lighter, have less room for insulation. However, despite its size Transcend Micro has a sound level that is comparable to a lot of standard CPAPs currently in the market.  For those CPAP users who are sensitive to noise and wish to purchase and use a Travel CPAP, Transcend Micro CPAP provides the patented and proprietary WhisperSoft TM muffler in the CPAP package as a standard offering.  The WhisperSoft TM muffler will help dampen tubing and mask sounds.

Transcend Drying Mode

The Transcend Micro’s convenient drying mode removes excess moisture from your mask and tubing. Standard on all Transcend CPAPs, it generates a flow of warm air for 30 minutes after therapy to clear out the moisture from your tubing, which reduces bacteria growth and makes it nice and dry, ready for your next night of sleep.
