Swipe right: a traveler’s guide to dating apps

Traveling is all about getting outside your comfort zone and tasting the local flavors – which don’t have to stop at food and drink – and being receptive to things you’d might not encounter at home.

Once considered taboo, dating apps have become the ultimate travel essential, especially if you’re hitting the road solo . A fast-track to plugging into the hometown crowd, they’ll help save time you might otherwise spend taking a blind chance on a nightlife scene, and open you up to a subset of people you’d otherwise never meet.

Connecting with locals can help you experience a destination more deeply than you would if you were charting your own path. From underground dance parties and hidden watering holes to home-cooked meals and language exchange, you could make new friends, go on fun dates, have hot hook ups, and maybe even find real love – anything is possible with a sense of adventure, an open mind, and a handful of best practices.

The different dating apps

Pick the platform that best suits you, and install it ahead of your trip so you can hit the ground running when you arrive.

With users in more than 190 countries, Tinder is among the most popular dating platforms worldwide. It offers the ability to change your location so you can browse in any city with its “Passport” feature, available with a paid “Tinder Plus” subscription. This feature is well worth the money (nevermind the ageist pricing: US$9.99 per month for the under 30 set and $19.99 per month for those older), as it allows you to get a head start with swiping so you can start conversations with matches and tee up plans before you’ve even packed your suitcase.

For many women, being bombarded by creepster solicitations can be overwhelming, if not downright repelling from dating altogether. Women-focused Bumble puts the control in the thumbs of its female users, who must initiate contact with matches within 24 hours before the connection disappears. And the guys are hotter than on Tinder – any woman, anywhere, can corroborate.

For some, a handful of photos and a 500-character profile doesn’t cut it when it comes to determining a suitable match. OKCupid features more robust profiles, a categorized search function – you can easily set your location to the destination that you’re headed to – and in-depth questionnaires that feed into an algorithm, which determines a percentage-based compatibility score between matches.

LGBTQIA+-specific apps

While the above apps are all LGBTQIA+ friendly, Grindr has long been the go-to for gay men. Users who subscribe to the “XTRA” service ($29.99/mo) can use the “Explore” feature to search for matches in any location and lockdown dates in advance; just be conscious of the customs and laws surrounding homosexuality wherever you’re visiting – authorities in some countries have been known to target, track and arrest gay men by using the app.

Grindr touts itself as a space that includes all queer, trans and non-binary people and is open to women, but their presence is virtually nil. HER was created for lesbian, bi and queer women, and to ensure that the platform is safe for its intended demographic, users can report profiles of straight men or couples on the prowl for threesomes.

Couples in search of a guest star while on holiday should try Feeld – which appeals to anybody with an open mind, partnered and single alike. From swinging and polyamory to kink and radically transparent one night stands, it’s a sex-positive platform where anything goes. Feeld also allows you to change your location to one of their “Cores” – major cities across the world with a high number of users, such as New York , São Paulo , Melbourne , Paris and Singapore .

Getting it right

There are a few things to think about to ensure the best experience when using dating apps on your travels.

Perfect your profile

To optimize your profile, list where you’re from, the dates you’ll be on the ground, and a few things you’re into, like a type of food or activity; you can even make a call for recommendations. And if you aren’t down to hook up, do state so – people are presumptuous no matter where you are in the world.

Keep the text brief, punchy and digestible. Post up-to-date photos that show you and your interests clearly, so matches can use them as a conversation starter – a handstand photo in front of Machu Picchu will have more people sliding into your DMs than a pixelated group shot in a bar where you’re barely discernible amongst your friends.

Be intentional

It’s important to go into this experience knowing exactly what you want. A tour guide? A dinner companion? A language teacher? A cross-cultural romance ? Many locals are happy and proud to show off their hometowns, so be up-front about what you’re looking for when communicating.

You’ll likely find that people are intrigued by you, a mysterious foreigner with an interesting accent, and aren’t put off by the prospect of a short-term connection.

Swipe strategically

If you’re staying in a big city, keep your location setting within a five-mile radius. You may also opt to adjust the age range to narrow it down to people who more closely fit your ideal. Time is of the essence, so don’t be surprised if your match wants to go from zero to 100 – if they swiped knowing that you’re only around for a short time, odds are they’re down to skip the small talk and get straight to the point.

If that's what you want too, then keep the conversation snappy and don’t let it linger without some move to action for too long – ideally, you should exchange numbers within a couple of scrolls down your screen.

Take it to text

WhatsApp is the most commonly used texting app across the world and works across operating systems and on wi-fi, so be sure to download it if you don’t already use it. When communicating with a match, be upbeat and candid – but also direct and politely firm.

Ask for last names, more photos, or links to social media profiles, and internet stalk away if you want a better sense of who they are. Anybody who refuses most likely has something to hide. If it eases your mind to have a phone call or video chat before meeting, don’t hesitate to initiate it.

Respect customs

When it comes to dating, cultural norms vary around the world. Be sensitive to customs around courting and remain aware of what’s socially acceptable when it comes to public displays of affection. This especially applies to the LGBTQIA+ community, as some 70 countries criminalize homosexuality. Know the laws of country you’re planning to visit ( this map is a good place to start ).

Tinder users will find that a travel alert pops up when the app is opened in a country where LGBTQIA+ status equates to a crime, and they must opt in to be shown in these locations. Grindr issues warnings to users as well, and the app is completely banned in Turkey, Indonesia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Swipe safely

Common sense, clear boundaries and direct communication are critical when swiping. You can always unmatch the moment you feel uncomfortable or change your mind. Remember that these are perfect strangers and you don’t owe anyone an explanation – ever. Never share exactly where you’re staying and avoid letting on that you don’t know your way around.

The first date

For a first date, meet in a busy, public place during the daytime, no further than a mile from your accommodation. If you drink or use substances, know your limits and never take your eyes off your drink. Carry enough money to pay your own way and get back to your accommodation. Trust your instincts and don’t feel pressured to do anything you don’t want to do; if a date starts to take a strange turn, bow out immediately.

Always make sure someone knows where you are. If you’re traveling solo, leave a hand-written note in your room, stating where you’re headed and who you’re with, or tell the receptionist. If that feels awkward, shoot a text with your date’s contact details, profile and message screenshots, or your live geolocation to a friend back home.

If you find yourself in a seedy nightlife scenario where your date knows every single person working there, stay conscious of shifty motives or a ruse. In some countries, it’s not uncommon to swipe on matches who turn out to be sex workers in pursuit of clients.

When going the route of hooking up, enthusiastic, informed, and ongoing consent is imperative. Be direct about your expectations and intentions, moreso if there’s a language barrier – don’t be timid about using a translator on your phone to communicate clearly.

Temper your expectations

Cast the net wide and don’t get too hung up on one person or experience. When deciding on activities, it’s cool to mention some things your list, but go with the flow and let your date make suggestions, too.

Splitting the bill can help keep any expectations in check for both people, but if someone goes the distance to show you around, picking up a meal or a round of drinks is a nice gesture.

While true love can certainly come from this experience, if you keep your focus on making meaningful human connections, having lighthearted fun, and experiencing the destination in an alternative way, you’ll go home with fond memories of new friends, steamy stories for your homegirls or lads, and maybe even a new long-distance love to lure you right back.

What should you do first while looking for a travel buddy?

Many people who desire to travel around the world and see breathtaking places don’t have a suitable travel companion. And not everyone can make an announcement “travel buddy wanted” via social networks.

Most likely your perfect travel buddy and even destiny are not among your old internet friends. And this is the main reason to start looking for a travel buddy on the special project. At first pick and post your best photos, decide where you want to go and what do you plan to visit, write all hobbies, interests and plans in your personal profile and start an exciting race of making new friends all around our planet.

There are several secrets that help while choosing a travel buddy

Pay attention to people’s plans and habits. For example, if a person writes in a profile that he prefers energetic lifestyle with tons of activities and you enjoy calm and quite sightseeing – probably you won’t make a good match even if other interests are similar. If you two are early birds – that’s great, if not it could do you wrong. Imagine the situation when your buddy is a night owl and doesn’t give you a chance to rest.

So try to write a list of what you prefer while traveling. Do you like organized or spontaneous trips? Riding a car or hiking miles? Dining at home or tasting foreign cuisine? And you can also mention on what side of the bed you sleep. Make a funny note - travel buddy with left bedside preference wanted. Fortunately, your perfect travel buddy will appreciate this tiny joke. And don’t forget that sense of humor is one of the most important things in any relationship.

One of the aspects of Digital Nomad life is that it is often glamorized. There is an assumption that because you are a full-time traveler that life is just one big vacation and everything is perfect.

Is this true?

Of course not!

This is one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to working remotely. It’s not just one big party. This kind of lifestyle comes with many challenges. One of the biggest is finding a partner to date.

It’s not easy to find someone who wants to take an alternate, non-traditional path. “Oh, what’s that? You’re leaving in three months?” “I think I’ll pass!” This is often the thinking of someone considering romantic involvement with a nomad.

So what do we do? Do we resort to just short-term relationships or force ourselves to change our habits and style of living?

No! This isn’t necessary!

There is another way:

Although nomadic dating is a big hurdle to overcome, it’s not impossible. In this article, we will hear from 12 different solo & couple travelers offering their best advice for travel dating while abroad.

Ready to Begin?

Let’s do it!

Nomadic travel dating tip #1: go local.

Nicholas, Nomad Talk

I like the idea of a shortage of people who are suitable to date digital nomads, I just don’t believe it’s true. If you’re trying to fish the tiny pool of people that are “in the lifestyle” then you might find yourself out of luck, but there is another way.

Go local. Date somebody in the place that you’re in and from the place that you’re in. Sure, they may not be nomadic now, but they might be persuaded if they find you fascinating enough.

That’s how I met Megan, my partner, she’s from the Philippines. I went to Cebu, we started dating and a year later she was traveling the world with me.

Things aren’t “exactly equal”. Megan doesn’t earn as much as a Westerner, but she carries more of the “relationship load” when she needs to in exchange for me taking on a bit more of the financial lifting.

And surely, the whole point of going nomad is to travel the world and to meet interesting people? Not every date needs to turn into a marriage proposal. Be bold. Ask someone out and see where it leads, it’s far better than waiting for the “one” to turn up out of the blue.

This Valentine’s day, Megan and I were chilling out over a few beers and some great food in Vietnam. We’re the living proof that “going local” can turn out very well, indeed.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #2: Get Off the Internet

Daniel, Layer Culture

Any digital nomad that is used to spending their days glued to the laptop screen will often contemplate how life could be outside of a travel dating app. They will also look for other ways that they can improve their confidence.

If you find yourself in a big city and looking for new ways to meet potential dates, try searching for local poetry nights or open mic nights. When I am on my travels in South America , I am usually on the lookout for poetry night or the nearest equivalent. The main reason I suggest this is for you to get away from your connected device and put yourself in an environment where you are forced to focus on the people in front of you.

A typical poetry reading can last anywhere between 7 and 20 minutes and the idea is that you put all your attention on the speaker and their words. During the intervals, you have your chance to mingle with prospective partners and engage in riveting conversations.

If you do a digital nomad job outside of writing and you want to build up your confidence, poetry is a great way to express yourself to a potential partner and can work wonders with the audience when on the stage.

Daniel James from Layer Culture is a cultural traveler based in the United Kingdom. Daniel dedicates his time to exploring and learning about life in Latin America. Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #3: Don’t Rush In

Jarryd, NOMADasaurus

While I have never dated as a digital nomad (been in a long-term relationship since I started this digital nomad journey), there are definitely difficulties in this lifestyle that are the same whether you’re single or in a couple. One issue can be the lack of routine, which makes setting time aside to meet people, go on dates and simply hang out surprisingly hard. When you’re constantly moving around it can be tough to interact meaningfully with new people.

Another problem could be having a lack of community. When you date in the ‘real’ world, you have your own friends, work and hobbies that occupy a lot of your time. When you are a digital nomad traveling the world, you have none of this. That means that when you do finally meet someone, you could end up spending a huge majority of your time together as you have no one else to see. For some relationships, this works wonders. For others, it is far too intense and can destroy what may have otherwise been a wonderful relationship if you took things slowly.

It’s not always a bad thing. I met my now-wife while traveling, and even though we almost immediately spent all of our time together (buying a campervan and living in it from day 1), for us it worked out very well.

So my tips for this would be to try to go into each new potential relationship the same way you would if you weren’t a digital nomad. Don’t be too keen, be prepared to take things slow and don’t neglect other hobbies or interests while in the early stages.

Jarryd Salem is one half of Australia’s biggest adventure travel blog, NOMADasaurus . He’s been traveling the world for over 10 years, searching for culture and adventure in off the beaten path destinations. Along with his wife Alesha, he now runs two successful digital media businesses, with their blog and social media channels allowing them to ‘get paid to travel’.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #4 : Culture Difference or Personality Flaw?

Lauren, Always Find Adventure

One of the challenges with digital nomad dating in a new country is determining whether the way a person acts is due to their personality, or the culture. The beauty of living in another country and meeting new people is coming across these challenges and using communication to understand people.

We tend to look for partners based on a few things including their morals, personality, goals, and connection. Culture influences many of these things. It is not always just the culture and everyone is different but sometimes we can be unsure which one it is.

For context: I’m a heterosexual American woman and I live in Valencia, Spain. I’ve dated people in both Barcelona and Valencia.

One thing that keeps coming up for me is men not following a protocol of texting/calling you back if they are interested. The men I’ve dated here in Spain, seem to be on an equal playing field and will text you, and you will text them. This can be confusing to an American, like myself, who is used to men who are interested in me, always making more of the effort in the beginning. I really can’t tell if the men here are interested in me, or if they aren’t based on one of those cultural and social clues that I’m used to. I’m not really certain if Spanish men, in general, are like this, or if I’ve just coincidentally come across men who are all very nonchalant in their personalities.

Knowledge and information are the best ways to understand and overcome these obstacles. By gathering your own data (going on many dates with different types of people) and also talking to native people, you can see what is considered ‘normal’ and either understand and/or adhere to those cultural differences when dating. If the cultural norm is something you cannot tolerate, then you will deal with it as needed.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #5: Keep an Open Mind

Bella, Passport & Pixels

Travel dating sites are a great way to meet people when you arrive somewhere new. Obviously meeting strangers comes with risks and you need to be sensible, but using Tinder or Bumble as a nomad traveler can open you up to all sorts of possibilities you probably won’t encounter in normal life. Back home you’ll probably have a checklist of requirements: do I fancy their photos? Do they have good online chat? Will my friends like them? Do we share the same views and life goals? Do they also love experimental jazz and pineapple on pizza?  As a Nomad, none of that matters.

When I went to volunteer in Uganda I wasn’t staying permanently. This means I was able to be much more open-minded about who I met – and so should you!

So he’s not the best-looking guy… but maybe he’s hilarious! So she can’t spell? English probably isn’t her first language. So he doesn’t want kids / loves thrash metal / thinks Trump is a hero (OK maybe the last one’s still a dealbreaker…). The point is when you’re a traveler, none of these things matter so much. So be open-minded about who you decide to meet. You may not fancy them but you could still end up with great company. They may even surprise you, and you could end up extending your stay…

As for me? I matched on Tinder with a guy who was not my type at all – but when we met we had instant chemistry. We had a wonderful time exploring some of the amazing places to visit in Uganda , and although it eventually ended, I’m so pleased I took a chance. So give it a try, what do you have to lose?

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #6: Scout Your Neighborhood or Location

Rai, A Rai of Light

Dating while working abroad, whether it be in a bustling city or a  cheap tropical island , certainly comes with its fair share or difficulties and challenges. From not being able to speak the language to distances that only add to the uneasiness. Cultural differences, unfortunately, are inherently part of the experience.

One thing that helps tremendously to overcome some of these challenges is the choice in location. Before arriving in a new destination, it is important to make sure to stay in an area that is most conducive to meeting the kind of people that you prefer to spend time with. For the most part, different locations and neighborhoods attract a certain type of individual and collectively a particular type of crowd.

A little research beforehand to figure out the contrasting neighborhoods and their level of appeal will give you a good idea of where to base yourself for maximum benefit. As a result, it will be that much easier to meet someone you connect with. The key to minimizing the difficulty of dating is knowing where to look and taking your time.

Founder of A Rai of Light, Rai left the safety of the corporate world behind and has been traveling the world for over 4 years in pursuit of adventure and destinations that are off the beaten track .

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #7: Communicate Your Expectations

James, Team AJ Travels

It is important to be aware of the cultural differences that can lead to misaligned expectations of what a date will lead to.

If you are seeing someone for a long enough in the western world you will reach the inevitable “so where do you see this going” moment.

I lived in the Philippines for many years and dated a few Filipinas  over the years. In my experience this conversation never usually happened and that it could just be assumed that you are in a committed relationship very early on.

Filipinas are often hopeless romantics and place a lot of importance on marriage and family. This can be quite different from what young nomad travelers may prioritize.

Out of fairness for both parties, it is important that you are very upfront about what you are looking for and be careful not to create unrealistic expectations, intentionally or otherwise.

If you notice that this may be the case, do the right thing and set the record straight.

So, how do you try and understand the local dating culture in the first place? Your best bet is to try and find a small sample of local girls (or guys) to ask directly.

The easiest way to do this is to find a local meetup online. It will be an easy topic to bring up over a few drinks in a group. There will be plenty to learn and it should be a fun conversation for all anyway.

Maybe someone will catch your eye in the process…

James and Anh are from Sydney, Australia and are a couple constantly obsessed with their next vacation. They want to show people just how much travel is possible while holding down a full-time job by starting with your own backyard to cultivate and nurture the desire to explore.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #8: Stay Flexible

Mitch, Project Untethered

We’ve all been there.

You meet someone amazing while traveling and share a couple of special days together….but then it’s time to part ways. You have your travel plans and they have theirs. It’s just part of being a nomad.

…right?

Well, not necessarily.

As nomadic travelers, we know we’re going to meet other awesome people on the road. It’s almost impossible not  to.

So with this in mind, why not purposely keep your travel plans flexible?

Instead of buying all your flights and booking all your accommodation ahead of time, why not just go with the flow? Choose a country, have a rough idea of what you’d like to do, and let your plans adapt according to the people you meet.

Yes, if you’re dead set on following a certain itinerary, it’s nearly impossible to maintain long-term relationships on the road.

But as digital nomads, we’re in a special position. We can work from anywhere and have the ultimate freedom. When we meet someone special, we have a CHOICE.

You either choose your strict itinerary, or you choose love.

All cheesiness aside, I’m serious. If you’re sick of being lonely, the solution is easy.

Stay flexible. If you connect with someone special, use your freedom to follow them.

Mitch runs the Project Untethered  blog where he teaches travelers how to support themselves on the road and build a permanent life of adventure.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #9: Make Sure You’re On The Same Page

Ron, Red Pill Rebellion

Okay, so you’ve started to get the hang of this Digital Nomad  thing….

You’ve got your location-independent business at a point where it’s sustainable. You know your workload, and you’ve got that “work/life balance” thing all figured out…

Your traveling schedule is awesome, and you’re exploring a combination of places you love to return to as well as new countries you’ve had your sights on.

Life is perfect….right?

Maybe…but is something missing?

One of the most challenging aspects of the lifestyle is finding that special someone who’s in it for the long haul. The yin to your yang. The one that compliments you perfectly and finishes all of your ____________? (Wow….how did you know? ?)

So, what’s my tip?

Two things:

First, make sure you’re on the same page, lifestyle-wise. Do you want the same things? Are you headed in the same direction? Or are you bound to crash headfirst into a brick wall?

I know you’re excited to finally meet that person who you can go on epic adventures with that just gets you. Someone to have by your side and make you feel whole. However, it’s important to take it slow…

Many nomads are so excited to find their soulmate that they are blinded by the fact that they may not be right for you. So I’ll say it again: SLOW DOWN!

Do you have the same sense of humor? Is it easy to communicate? Do you have the same life goals? Are you on the same path?

The more time you take to get to know your partner the more you’ll realize how much you have (or don’t have) in common. If the only thing you have in common is physical attraction towards one another, it might not be a match made in heaven. Take the time to figure it out.

Second, if and when you do have that person in your sights. Act on it. Be direct about what you want and move forward accordingly.

A lot of westerners like to do this little dance where they play hard to get and see who caves in first. While I agree, this is less common amongst the nomadic tribe, it still exists.

If you like someone, give it a shot! What have you got to lose? Drop the game and make it happen, Otherwise, you may lose your perfect partner.

Only, you won’t realize it until it’s too late!

Trust me on this one; I speak from experience.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #10: Don’t Be Afraid of a Little Distance

Alysa, Voyaging Herbivore

It’s easy to say that one of the biggest challenges of a relationship that spans oceans is the difficulty in communication due to the distance. For two years now Jack and I (Alysa) have successfully navigated a long-distance relationship between the UK and the US.

If you’re afraid to try and build a relationship because of the inevitable distance, with so many technologies available today and the widespread access to the internet, that’s no reason that this should stop you. In fact, distance can build a much stronger relationship.

Being in a long-distance relationship means that the times that you are together are all the more special. Use these chances to see each other to meet halfway. Maybe that’s in Paris where you explore the vegan scene  or Bali where you soak up the sun. Wherever you get to see each other, let that add to the excitement. If you’ve got to travel to be together anyway, it might as well be somewhere on your bucket list!

Distance has the power to either break you or make you stronger than ever as a couple. The best advice I can give is to not be afraid of it! Without a long-distance relationship not only would I have missed out on the happiest two years of my life, but I also wouldn’t have had a chance to explore Paris in the fall or see some of the best sunsets at a secret hill in Northern England.

Jack and Alysa met in early 2018 while both living in London. Since then they’ve navigated a cross-cultural and long-distance relationship. They now run the ethical, sustainable, and plant-based travel blog, Voyaging Herbivore.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #11: Befriend the Locals

Teresa, Brogan Abroad

One of the challenges of traveling for a living or as a way of life is that making long-lasting relationships can be difficult. This applies especially when it comes to dating. Saying this, many relationships have flourished after meeting while traveling, and continuing long-distance for a while until the time was right to reunite. So it is possible!

One of the best ways to meet people, and therefore increase the chances of meeting someone you may want to date, is by seeking out to become friends with locals wherever you find yourself. But to do this it’s important to be open-minded.

We all love an easy life, and seeking familiarity helps us ease up into a big change, like arriving in a new city or country. This is why it’s very easy to fall into the ‘expat trap’ while traveling. I’m not saying that there’s something wrong with this. It’s just not the best way to meet local people, as expat communities tend to live in a bubble of their own.

So going back to meeting locals… What’s the best way to go on about it? From my experience, social media is a great way to engage with the local community. You may already know online people from a city/country because you follow them in, let’s say, Instagram or they follow you. So why not get in touch and let them know you are in the area and meet for a coffee? I wouldn’t use this method as a way of finding a date, but rather to make a local friend. You never know, as the friendship develops, you may get to meet their friends, and friends of friends and so on… you get the gist!

Although it’s not a dating site for travelers, another great social media app to meet people is meetup. Find a local group with similar interests to yours, let’s say hiking or photography and join them on an outing. You never know what could lead to a great friendship or even something more!

Teresa is a London-based travel blogger at Brogan Abroad . She’s on a mission to explore the world through deeper travel and more meaningful local experiences. She’s a lover of adventure, the outdoors and everything food-related, and is always looking for ways to make a positive impact through responsible and sustainable travel.

Nomadic Travel Dating Tip #12: Ensure Your Partner Fits Your Lifestyle

Caitlin, The Country Jumper

Speaking from a rather unpleasant experience, I can tell anyone who lives nomadically and is single and dating to be realistic about who they consider as a partner and what that person’s lifestyle looks like.

The nomadic lifestyle is a romanticized one and lots of people think it sounds great, but can’t actually hack it when push comes to shove. So, be very honest with yourself about the choices you have made and know that you have made them for a reason.

Don’t let anyone talk you back into a life you made the choice to leave. It didn’t fit then, it won’t fit now, and you will only ever resent that person for asking you to return to it or to neglect your dreams.

It is important to be open with who your partner is and what their life looks like, you’ve gone a non-traditional route with your life, so it would make sense that your partner has too. You may not know what that looks like for them, but it is also important not to sacrifice yours for theirs, especially, and I mean this with all the importance it can hold, at the beginning of a relationship.

Maybe later someone will have to take a step back – relationships require sacrifices and compromises, but not from the word ‘go’ that’s only a recipe for disaster.

Caitlin has been living abroad since graduating from college in 2011. Since then she has lived in seven countries. She writes, rides horses, teaches English, and runs The Country Jumper . Caitlin believes the best way to get to know a place is to move through it slowly and to get to know people.

Online For Love

Table of Contents

People who love traveling and experiencing new cultures find it pretty hard to find partners who are as adventurous as them.

If you are that type of person, then you will be very happy to hear that there are plenty of dating websites and apps made exclusively for people who are looking for both romantic partners and travel buddies.

We will rate these Travel Dating Sites according to:

These or some of the best dating apps and websites will help you find a soul mate that is as enthusiastic about traveling as you.

Miss Travel

The New MissTravel AppMissTravel Travel Blog

  • Signing up – 5/5
  • Making contact with people – 5/5
  • Profile quality – 5/5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 5/5
  • Hundreds of men looking for a travel partner
  • You usually don’t have to pay for anything
  • Some may expect you to act like a sugar baby

Demographic Makeup

Miss Travel is a very popular website among sugar babies and sugar daddies and it helps people find their perfect travel partners.

Even though it is the most popular among people in the sugaring world, it is still a good platform for all people who want to travel and can’t find a friend or partner for that.

The number of men and women on this platform is pretty equal, and both sides tend to offer paid travel to people of the opposite sex.

They are usually members of higher social classes who seek companionship on occasional trips and they are willing to pay people to join them.

The age range of its users is pretty diverse and women are usually somewhere between 20 and 27 years old, while men are anywhere between 30 and 50 years old.

Most of its users are white, but there is a quite big number of Black and Asian users too.

Ease of use (mobile and desktop version)

Miss Travel only has a desktop version and is very easy to use like most online dating sites that have been popular for a decade or more now.

The whole design is pretty simple and easy to navigate, and you can create your profile in just a minute or two.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 8

It is not really made for people to find love but rather to help them meet people who want to travel to the same destination, and are maybe willing to cover their traveling expenses.

However, my experience has shown me that quite a few people have managed to establish great relationships with their travel partners and some even managed to engage in romantic relationships.

On the other hand, there were also plenty of people who just clicked with their travel mates and continued to explore the world together.

There is really no algorithm or matchmaking process and you can search for people in your city, or sort them by age and sexual preferences.

As I have already mentioned, Miss Travel is usually used by sugar babies and sugar daddies but there are quite a few people who don’t seek these types of arrangements but are just looking for travel companions.

It is completely free for all people who register themselves as sugar babies, whether they are male or female so you can register yourself as a sugar baby and use it free of charge.

On the other side, people who want to provide others with free vacations register themselves as sugar daddies and pay around 30 dollars per month for this membership.

Is this platform made for escorting?

Even though it is very popular among sugar daddies and sugar babies, you can find plenty of people who are just looking for a regular travel buddy without any emotional or sexual expectations.

Some people are just lonely and are willing to provide others with valuable experiences they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Overall rating

Miss Travel is a very safe and popular travel dating website so I am sure many people will be able to find their perfect travel match here.

However, some people may have different expectations and that’s completely ok, you just have to be honest from the start with them.

Millennials love this platform and they use it pretty often, so if you are a part of this generation, you will for sure be able to find a like-minded partner on here.

In my opinion, this is a straight 5 out of 5 but be clear about your wishes and expectations from the start so you don’t find yourself in complicated relationships.

  • Signing up – 3/5
  • Making contact with people – 4/5
  • Profile quality – 4/5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 3/5
  • Millions of users around the world
  • Full of scammers
  • A lot of bugs

Tour Bar is a pretty popular travel dating app that helps people find true love in many different cities throughout the world and meet locals who are up for an adventure.

It has become very popular during the past few years, especially among people who spend their whole year traveling and don’t know another way to meet with people from the local community.

The users of this platform are usually very young, between 17 and 28 years old, and 60% of them are females.

Some of them are single people looking for their perfect match, while others are just solo travelers who are looking for some fun in their current location.

Tour Bar is a dating app that is currently available only to Android users, even though it worked on iPhones during the past year too.

While the whole signup process is pretty easy and simple, every account goes through a verification process, and that is something most users are complaining about.

According to them, some people get rejected even after they upload their ID and phone number, while other scam profiles get approved without any reason.

TourBar - Chat, Meet & Travel Apk Download for Android- Latest version 4.2.0- com.tourbar

The profile quality is okay, but it wouldn’t hurt if people were able to upload more information about themselves or at least describe their own interests and likes.

You can start liking and swiping other users once you join, just like on Tinder, but you won’t be able to send messages to people who don’t swipe you back.

In case you want to have the opportunity to reach out to everyone, you will have to pay for a Tour Bar membership.

The app is pretty simple and has a cool design, but users also complain there are quite a few bugs and it crashes down from time to time.

There is no algorithm of any sort and you will get people recommended to you by your current location.

Unfortunately, there are also plenty of fake profiles and scammers on here, so be very cautious when using it.

Free users of Tour Bar can edit their profile, change the locations and send messages to other people, but only people who will receive their messages are those who swipe them back.

In case someone didn’t see you liked or swiped their profile and you have sent them a message, you probably won’t get the answer anywhere in the future.

The membership is around 10 dollars per month but the app doesn’t state what other features are included in this membership since it doesn’t allow too many filters and features at all.

Is this a platform for hookups or serious relationships?

There is no definition of the type of relationship people are looking for on this platform, and while some of them are looking for a partner (like  eHarmony  or  Tinder ), others just want to meet new friends and find potential travel buddies or hookups (like  BeNaughty  or  Ashley Madison ).

During the pandemic though most people were looking for a relationship of some sort.

While Tour Bar is an app that has a pretty cool concept and helps you meet new people everywhere around the world, it still has a lot of bad sides and is probably not the best choice.

There are so many scammers and fake profiles that are hardly recognized, and the app itself has a lot of bugs and crushes down often.

It also won’t allow you to get in contact with everyone and even though the membership is pretty cheap, we are not very clear with what we are getting once we pay for it.

The platform looks pretty interesting and the design is interesting, but unfortunately, the platform is of very bad quality and I recommend skipping it.

YourTravelMates

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 9

  • Millions of active users everywhere
  • Very safe and reliable
  • Much more women than men

Your Travel Mates is probably the most popular travel dating website that has been gathering millions of people during the past decade.

It is full of people who establish travel dating profiles hoping to find like-minded romantic partners who will travel the world with them.

Since it has millions of users, you can find a potential partner in almost every bigger city in the world.

Demographic Makeup is quite diverse, but over 70% of its users belong to higher social classes and they can usually engage in traveling to luxury destinations.

On the other hand, more than 60% of users are women, so it may take some time to find a perfect man, especially if you living in New York where over 80% of users are women.

However, most people find great partners, and even if these relationships don’t become very serious, they can turn into great friendships and you can continue traveling together.

Your Travel Mates exists both as a website and as a dating app that is, for now, available only on Android devices.

While the signup process is pretty simple and fast, after you are signed up, you will have to fill out additional questionnaires that will allow the algorithm to connect you with people who have the highest compatibility with you.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 10

You will answer questions about your travel and lifestyle preferences, but also personal questions like your religion, education, and career.

Also, you are allowed to completely plan your next trip and make it public, so people who were thinking of doing the same thing can contact you and join you.

People on this platform are also looking for different types of travel, and while some are looking for backpacking buddies, others are looking for someone who will go cruising the Adriatic Sea with them.

Your Travel Mates also looks a bit like social media because you have a public place, or better say forum where you can share your experiences and offer to be a local guide to others.

You will have to pay to use Your Travel Mates and get the opportunity to schedule the first date and get in contact with others.

This platform offers you to pay for the number of messages you will be sending and each message is one credit.

A profile with 150 credits will cost you 20 dollars, the one with 600 is 150 dollars, and the one with 1500 credits is 300 dollars,

While the membership is quite expensive, you can pay 20 dollars, exchange a few messages and get in touch through another social media or messaging app to discuss the details of your future relationship.

How can I use this platform as a foreigner?

As a foreigner, you can start looking for potential buddies on solo travel and explore all the active users in the city you are currently in.

However, you should be aware that people in some places don’t really speak English so you may encounter a language barrier.

Your Travel Mates is definitely one of the best travel dating sites that allow people to meet like-minded singles and engage in adventurous travels with them.

It’s similar to traditional dating platforms like EHarmony and OkCupid and you will be able to find a potential partner pretty easy,

The thing may be a bit more difficult when you are looking at people from the local community you are currently in but in general, this is an amazing platform for all enthusiastic travelers.

I give it 5 out of 5 and recommend everyone to try it out!

TravelHostDate

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 11

  • Making contact with people – 3/5
  • Profile quality -3 /5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 4/5
  • Great travel community
  • Not too many active users

Travel Host Date is a travel dating website that was quite popular a few years ago, but it seems like it doesn’t have too many active users nowadays.

Even though it is pretty safe and easy to use, it had a very small number of new members during the past 2 years, and over 50% of dating profiles on here are inactive.

However, those who still use it are usually men and women older than 40 who are looking for an adventurous partner they can spend the rest of their life with.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 12

They are usually looking for serious relationships and don’t want to waste time on casual hookups.

Travel Host Date is a dating website that is pretty simple and pretty outdated, and even though you would think it works well, it has so many bugs and maybe even viruses.

Those who manage to access the platform will be presented with the signup page that will require them to upload their basic information and location so they can start searching for the soul mate.

There are no fancy features and filters or video chats and all you will be able to do is exchange messages with other people.

You also won’t see any algorithm that will connect you to people based on your compatibility and you will be shown all the profiles in no specific order.

Unfortunately, plenty of profiles on this platform are inactive and it can be a pretty long and exhausting process to find an interesting person.

Even though the website claims there are no scammers and fake profiles on it, my experience has shown me that there are plenty of scammers searching for a victim that will agree on a meet-up with them that can end badly.

Travel Host Date allows you to make a completely free profile and connect with other users, but after about 50 messages, you will be required to pay for a monthly membership if you want to continue using it.

Once you reach the message limit, you will have to wait for the next month before you are allowed to send messages again.

My advice is to use the platform for some time and in case you really find someone who seems to be interesting, exchange your social media accounts or phone numbers and continue chatting on here.

Are there real people on this platform?

Yes, there is for sure a large number of real people who use this platform, but unfortunately, there is a big number of inactive and fake profiles which makes the whole dating process a lot harder.

Travel Host Date used to be a very popular travel dating site a few years ago, but unfortunately, it is pretty inactive and useless these days and there are far better options.

The whole website is very outdated and it’s not even safe for use, but you can try it out if you don’t really manage to find anyone interesting on other dating platforms

For a younger audience, it is definitely worthless and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to spend money on membership on this platform.

I give it a 3 out of 5 and recommend you to stay away from it unless you really don’t have any success on other websites.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 13

  • Millions of active users all around the world
  • Has a great algorithm
  • Not really made for travel dating

Bumble is one of the most popular dating apps nowadays and it has over 100 million users all around the world.

It is mostly popular among the younger audience and it allows them to meet people who are up for a serious relationship, casual hookup, or for a travel buddy.

Over 90% of its users are between 20 and 33 years old, and there is almost an equal number of men and women on this platform.

There are also people of all sexual orientations, so you can easily find partners even if you are a member of the LGBTQ community.

Bumble is a dating app that is available both for Android and iOS devices and you can use it in every single country in the world.

The design is very fun and simple and you can easily like other people’s profiles and get in touch with them.

You can fill out several Q&As and questionnaires that will help the algorithm connect you with like-minded people.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 14

Unfortunately, no feature will allow you to connect with people who love traveling as much as you, but you can always state that fact in your description and start reaching out to people who have similar interests.

It can take some time, but there are so many users on Bumble that you will for sure be able to find your perfect match.

Bumble offers you to use a free profile and get in touch with many different people without any limitations, but you won’t have the access to special features and filters that can make your search for the perfect partner a lot easier.

As a premium user, you will get to pay 22 dollars per month and get access to all of the filters the platform has to offer and your whole experience will for sure be a lot more enjoyable and interesting.

It also allows you to become the gold user and it will make you pop up on other people’s homepages more often.

Can I change my location on Bumble?

Yes, you can change your location during your trips as much as you want.

If you find yourself in another city each week you can change the location and get in touch with the locals who will make your travel experience a lot more amusing.

Bumble is a great dating app and even though it was not strictly made for travel dating it can still be a great place for everyone who is looking for a partner.

Even though you have to pay for membership if you want to get access to all of the filters and features, it is not too expensive and can help you improve your experience immensely.

It also allows you to change your location while traveling, so you can move to another city each day and still get the opportunity to meet locals in that area.

This is a straight 5 out of 5 and I recommend it to everyone, especially the younger audience.

Five tips for a romantic date in Moscow

  • #Special Interest

Big city night lights, posh restaurants, quiet walks in isolated corners— there are plenty of ideas on giving a romantic touch to your trip. However, what specific things can a loving couple do in Moscow?

01 Ostankino TV Tower

travel dating

If you are not afraid of heights, then the highest possible date in Moscow is waiting for you. An unforgettable date can be organized in Ostankino TV tower, with its 337 meters high observation deck and the restaurant with the 360 degrees view dimension. While you are dining, the restaurant floor is going in a circle, and you can watch Moscow from the bird’s eye view and all sides of the TV Tower. If you prepare your date in advance, you can order a tour of the Ostankino Tower , a photoshoot, and a unique table decoration.

Please, note that you need to have a passport or any other identity verification document to enter the Tower and the restaurant.

02 Troyka Riding in Kolomenskoye

travel dating

Have you ever heard of Troyka riding, the very ancient Russian fun? Troyka is simply three horses harnessed in a cart. However, this old-fashioned vehicle is still a national symbol: being able to develop a speed up to 50 kilometers per hour, it reminds of Russian wild nature.

If you want to try this experience, the best place to do this is Kolomenskoye Park , the former Tzar residence with a great atmosphere of ancient Russia with excellent examples of wooden architecture.

03 Planetarium

travel dating

The Planetarium is the best place to watch the night sky and stars in the daytime — and this is always a pleasure for the loving hearts. Moscow Planetarium, located near Barrikadnaya Metro station, offers standard star performance and welcomes its interactive science museum.

After the Planetarium, you can also visit the Moscow Zoo, located nearby.

04 Picturesque views: Izmailovo and Kuskovo

travel dating

If you a fan of nature and prefer long peaceful walks to restaurants or active tours, then the parks of Moscow are for you! Sure they look their best during summer and early autumn but are open all year round for visitors from all over the world.

What do you get there? Firstly, of course, the atmosphere of genuine Russian nature perfectly suits for strolling around and capturing tender moments. If the weather is warm, nothing better can be organized than a picnic in one of these places; in addition, both parks have boat stations, where you can rent a small boat for an hour or so.

What is more, both places have their gem. Thus, Izmailovo Park is located close to the Izmailovo market and Izmailovo Kremlin; both places are worth visiting, too, if you want to purchase worthy souvenirs or make colorful selfies with wooden buildings created in 16-17 centuries Russian architecture style. In Kuskovo , you can be acquainted with the palace and pavilions of the 18th century, making the place look more solemn.

05 Boat trip: Radisson Cruise Flotilla

travel dating

The main advantage of using the Radisson boats for a cruise of the Moscow river is that they operate worldwide. They offer tickets for different classes: just a seat in the 2nd class or a table in the 1st class where you can order dinner, drink a glass of champagne, and enjoy live music on board! There are daily departures in the morning and the afternoon from the Ukraine Hotel and Gorky Park.

Global airlines are governed by strict 'freedoms of the air' dating back 80 years. They've created some funky routes.

  • Global airlines are governed by nine "freedoms of the air," drafted 80 years ago in 1944.
  • These dictate how airlines can operate in foreign nations, with some more complicated than others.
  • The fifth freedom can give airlines a competitive edge and help capitalize on demand.

Insider Today

Over the past 100 years of shuttling people around the globe in metal flying machines, the world's aviation network has grown into a vast web of intersecting routes that connect nearly every corner of the globe.

Because of the complexities of crossing international borders, commercial carriers follow what is known as the "freedoms of the air" — or the right for an airline to operate within a nation other than its own.

These building blocks of aviation make international connectivity possible.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO , there are five official freedoms and four other "so-called" rights, that have been outlined in agreements between countries. ICAO is an agency of the United Nations that sets standards for the global aviation industry.

Drafted in 1944 during what is known as the Chicago Convention, the laws were written as world governments relaxed their grip on airline networks and pricing. This liberalization, however, meant countries with bigger airlines would likely dominate the skies — prompting them to implement strict route regulations.

The governing freedoms not only promote more competition and choice but also allow airlines to optimize routes and increase efficiency, according to FlightRadar24 .

Most international carriers except for a very small few follow the basic freedoms of allowing airlines of one state to fly over or land in another, and vice versa.

Open Skies agreements simplify these international routes, like the one between the European Union and the US that allows any airline registered in either market to fly between the two.

Some freedoms are more complicated, but provide interesting and diverse route options to travelers.

The fifth and eighth freedoms of the air

Beyond the first four freedoms, there is one more officially recognized right, as well as the four "so-called" rights. The latter four were not officially drafted during the 1944 Chicago Convention but are regularly accepted and practiced worldwide.

According to ICAO, the fifth freedom gives an airline of one nation the right to fly between two other countries, so long as the one-stop routes start or end in its home country and all parties agree.

Among the most well-known fifth freedom routes are Emirates' flights from New York-JFK to Milan and Newark to Athens, both flying onward to the carrier's base in Dubai.

Similarly, Singapore Airlines flies between New York and Singapore via a stop in Frankfurt , and Australian flag carrier Qantas flies between Sydney and New York via Auckland, New Zealand, according to Google Flights.

United Airlines' delayed fifth freedom route will fly between the US mainland and Cebu, Philippines, via Tokyo starting in October, the carrier told Business Insider on Monday. It was supposed to start in July — before the FAA launched an investigation after a string of safety incidents at United.

These unique routes can be efficient for airlines trying to serve destinations that a plane can't reach nonstop, like Emirates' fifth freedom between Mexico City and Dubai via Barcelona or Latam Airlines' route between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, via Auckland.

Still, carriers will make stops on otherwise attainable direct flights because they can capitalize on the high-demand market on both legs — filling more seats and making more money.

Customers may also view carriers like Emirates and Singapore as a more luxe offering than the competing US and EU carriers across the Atlantic.

On the other hand, an airline that wants to serve a low-demand market can better fill the plane by adding a fifth-freedom leg to a nearby city, like Dutch flag carrier KLM's flight between Amsterdam and Santiago via Buenos Aires.

Among ICAO's most interesting "so-called" rights is the eighth freedom, which gives an airline the right to fly between two cities in a country that isn't its own— but the domestic leg seats cannot be sold as the entire journey must start or end in the foreign airline's home nation.

Related stories

Qantas used to fly an eighth freedom route between New York and Sydney via Los Angeles — but only those originating or destined for Australia could fly on the domestic cross-country leg, Forbes reported.

Also no longer flying, per Cirium data, African carrier Air Senegal, for example, launched a flight from Dakar to Baltimore with a layover in New York in 2021. The domestic leg seats couldn't be sold.

Here's a closer look at the freedoms of the air.

"Five Freedom Agreements"

First Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to fly over another without landing.

Second Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation the right to land in another territory for a technical stop. Think refueling or an inflight mechanical issue that prompted an unplanned emergency landing.

Third Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers to a foreign state, and vice versa.

Fourth Freedom

This allows the airline of one nation to take on passengers originating in another. The fourth freedom is simply the reverse of the third freedom.

Fifth Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers between two countries other than its own so long as the route starts or ends in the carrier's home state.

"So-called" rights

Six Freedom

This allows an airline to carry passengers from one nation to another via its home state. This represents the typical hub-and-spoke network used by global airlines.

Seventh Freedom

The seventh freedom is similar to the fifth freedom but takes out the limitation of where the route must start or end. Instead, an airline has the right to fly between two nations other than its own without flying onward to its home base.

The EU's single-aviation market, for example, grants airlines the right to fly to and from any EU country, like Ireland-based Ryanair that flies between Rome and Vilnius, Lithuania.

Eighth Freedom

This allows an airline to fly between two cities in a foreign country so long as all passengers originate or are destined for the airline's home state.

Ninth Freedom

This cabotage freedom allows an airline of one nation to fly between two points in a separate single country. This does not exist in the US, but it does in the EU — like easyJet's back-and-forth nonstop between Paris and Nice, for example.

Don't get Tinder swindled: Here are 4 essential online dating safety tips

travel dating

Dating apps have become something of a necessity for many single people.

Of course, it’s still possible to meet someone the old-fashioned way with a meet-cute worthy of a sappy holiday movie, but dating apps and websites have made their mark and paved the way for many people to find a match.

One in ten adults who are either married, living with their partner, or in a committed relationship met their significant other through a dating site or app, a 2023 Pew Research Center study found.

Dating sites and apps provide a catalog of people to choose from, offering hope of making a connection worthy of a meetup in the real world.

However, a Pew Research Center study found that nearly one-third of people who have used dating apps have safety concerns, so it’s no surprise that the idea of meeting a stranger can be unsettling for some.

Watch this video for tips on how to stay safe while using dating apps.

Verification Badges

Many dating apps have added verification badges, which are similar to the ones used on social media platforms. They come in a variety of forms but look for something like a check mark or the word "verified" near the person's name.

Dating platforms use different ways to verify that the person in the pictures is real. For instance, Bumble and Hinge use selfie verification methods that biometrically compare a real-time selfie to the photos in your profile.

If there's a profile that piques your interest but isn't verified, that's ok! A lack of verification doesn't mean the profile is fake.

Video Calling

It’s not uncommon to be wary about sharing your phone number with someone you have never met.

Apps, including Bumble and The League, offer in-app video calling as an alternative to revealing your contact details.

The video calling option appears once you’ve matched with someone, but there may be some prerequisites to use it.

  • On Bumble (the app known for women making the first move), women can video call a match immediately, whereas men can call once the woman sends a message.
  • Tinder requires both participants to opt-in to the feature before either party can initiate a call.

Facebook Groups

“Are We Dating The Same Guy” Facebook groups are designed to help people discover any “tea or red flags” on someone they are dating or might meet.

The idea behind these groups is to inform people in cities around the country about potential suitors, not to gossip about people.

The groups have rules around acceptable behavior inside and outside of the page.

Do’s include:

  • Sharing the first name and photograph of the person you're curious about.
  • Asking for dating or relationship advice.

Don’ts include:

  • Sharing personal details, like social media handles, phone numbers or addresses.
  • Screenshotting posts and sharing them outside of the page.
  • Commenting on a person’s looks.

If you are part of one of these groups, be mindful of what you are posting on a semi-public platform.

Some members of the Chicago-area group are involved in an invasion of privacy and defamation lawsuit filed by a man who was negatively spoken about in the group.

Share Location

So, you’ve arranged to go on a first date. Congratulations!

Once you’ve decided on a place to meet, share your location with someone you trust and let them know your plans.

Many smartphones have a built-in feature to share your location with someone using the same operating system. You can also use apps like Google Maps or WhatsApp to share your location across different operating systems.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Our online Airline Ticket booking system offers some of the most competitive rates to Russia available on the web so if you need tickets, please visit our Russian air ticket center . Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Who Is Wyndham Clark's Girlfriend? All About Alicia Bogdanski

Golfer Wyndham Clark has been dating his girlfriend Alicia Bogdanski since 2021

Rebecca Aizin is an Editorial Assistant at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2023. Her work has previously appeared on Elle, HGTV and Backstage.

Wyndham Clark may have scored a hole-in-one with his girlfriend Alicia Bogdanski.

The professional golfer first met Bogdanski in 2021 through mutual friends. They’ve since mainly kept their relationship private, but she has come out in support of him at various tournaments in the PGA tour.

A former cheerleader, Bogdanski knows just what to say to keep Clark focused and grounded during his matches and has acted as a major support system for the golfer.

“If I see him overthinking something, I try to pull him back down, get him grounded and make him see things in perspective,” she told Golf Digest in September 2023.

Bogdanski's perspective will likely come in handy as the golfer gears up for his first Masters Tournament in April 2024. Speaking to SB Nation ahead of the tournament, Clark revealed that he's been focused on his mental game after struggling with his "bounce back ability."

“I started working with my sports psychologist and working on my self-talk," he said. "I created the mentality that it doesn’t matter what just happened, I know I can bounce right back and make birdie."

So who is Wyndham Clark’s girlfriend? Here’s everything to know about Alicia Bogdanski and her relationship with the golfer.

She went to Arizona State University

Bogdanski graduated from Arizona State University in 2012 with a degree in psychology. During her time there, she was a cheerleader.

In August 2010, she told Sports Illustrated that she always planned on attending the school. “My grandpa, uncle, dad, mom and sister are all ASU alumni!” she said.

They met through mutual friends

Bogdanski and Clark were first connected at the end of 2021 through mutual friends, as the couple recalled to Golf Digest . However, they kept their relationship out of the spotlight in the beginning, until Bogdanski publicly cheered Clark on at the 2023 U.S. Open.

She is supportive of his career

The ASU alum has shown up in support of Clark at various tournaments but made her mark when she sealed his June 2023 U.S. Open win with a kiss. After Clark took home the championship in a one-stroke victory on the 18th hole green in the final round, Bogdanski joined him on the course where she lovingly held his face, hugged and kissed him during the emotional moment.

“Once it went in, it was just waterworks and everything kind of hit me at once,” Clark told PEOPLE of the win. “Just all the times I've dreamt about doing this, and how hard I've worked, and how many obstacles I've faced, to finally break through and do something like this was amazing.”

She came out in support of him again at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2024. After he won, the two posed with his trophy together.

They like to travel

Wyndham Clark Instagram

In December 2023, Bogdanski joined Clark and his family for a Christmas celebration in Cabo, Mexico. Clark posted photos of the vacation on his Instagram , including one of Bogdanski enjoying dinner with his family.

“A Cabo Christmas 🎄,” he wrote in the caption.

They enjoy watching other sports together

Golf isn’t the only sport the couple like to watch. In March 2024, Clark and Bogdanski attended a Colorado Avalanche hockey game with friends.

“Amazing weekend going back home to watch my two favorite teams @coloradoavalanche & @nuggets both get huge wins,” he captioned photos from the events. “Thank you for having me out, I can’t wait to cheer them both on in the playoffs!”

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
