We conducted hands-on testing of 25 dog food storage containers in our New York lab to find the absolute best. Our testers evaluated a wide variety of containers (including wall-mounted and wheeled products), rating them not only on design attributes but also stress-testing them for their ability to keep out water and stay stable when bumped.

Our overall favorite was the IRIS Airtight Food Storage Container & Scoop Combo , which is stackable, has wheels, and is made of food-grade plastic that's BPA-free, eliminating the opportunity for contamination. But the IRIS wasn't the only storage container we tested to earn high marks, with several other products also earning our recommendation.

Our best overall pick is the IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container & Scoop Combo because of its functionality, portability, and airtight seal. While many of the other containers on this list are also airtight, the other features offered by this container system set it apart from the competition. Our tester noted that when sealed and full of dog food, this container did not spill or open when shaken vigorously and tipped over. We also love that this container system is on wheels, making it easy to move in your pantry or throughout your house.

The IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container passed our lab tests with flying colors, garnering perfect scores for the container's design, durability, and ease of cleaning. The latch is easy to open and seals tight, plus it stays attached to the container, so you're not dealing with a bunch of separated parts. The lid fully opens the top of the container, making it easy to dump in big bags of food or access the interior for cleaning.

We also love that there are multiple colors available so that you can purchase the one that best fits your home. The scoop included with this container is also labeled with measurements so that you can know exactly how much food you’re giving your dog. The wide opening also makes this container easy to clean and wipe down when needed.

The combination of thoughtful design elements and substantial durability made the IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container a clear favorite during testing in our labs. The only downside our testers noted was that there is no way to secure the stackable containers to each other, so you have to rely on gravity instead.

We were also less enamored with larger IRIS Airtight storage containers. One that we purchased and tested separately failed both our tip test and sealing test, letting water in at the hinge and soaking the dog food inside. If you're looking at IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Containers, we recommend sticking to the combo package or its individual pieces.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a  quality dog food  storage container. With its 25-pound max capacity, the Van Ness Food Container is a bit smaller than some of the others on this list, but if you have a small dog or prefer to buy smaller quantities of food at one time, it’s a good fit. The container is constructed of food-grade plastic and has a seal that keeps air and pests out, so the food lasts longer. It also sits on top of four wheels, so if you need to move it around, you can do so easily without having to struggle to lift a full dog food container.

Our testers noted that while this container claims to have a "fresh-tite" seal, the top did come off when the container was knocked over during testing, so this may not be the best option for families with mischievous pets or larger dogs. It's also not waterproof, so it should not be left outside. Despite these design issues, we still think its reasonable price makes it a great choice for a dog food container.

The Simplehuman Pet Food Can is a definite splurge compared to the other options on this list we feel it's worth the price. The fingerprint-proof stainless steel outer shell has a BPA-free plastic inner bucket that’s removable for easy filling and quick cleaning. Rather than a screw-on or clip top, it features a large, ergonomic lock-tight handle that activates a silicone gasket and forms an airtight seal that keeps pests out (and prevents your pets from getting in). And as a bonus, it has a magnetic lid with an included measuring scoop that attaches to the lid, so at  feeding times , you never have to go digging into the dog food to find the scoop.

During our performance tests, our testers noted that no food fell out when the container was knocked over, and the scoop stayed magnetized to the lid. When submerged during the water-resistance test, our testers said that everything became wet except for the bin holding the dog food, which stayed completely dry. Although this container can be easily knocked over, its locked and airtight lid makes it completely spillproof, which is a huge plus for busy homes with mischievous pets.

We tested the 25-quart medium-sized version of the Simplehuman storage can, but two larger sizes are also available.

This airtight container is easy to fill and open with a screw-on top that will keep your pet’s food fresh. There are several sizes available so that you can choose a capacity that best fits your pet’s needs. Our tester noted that this container passed all of our performance tests (kicking, punching, and knocking over) except for the water submersion portion. While being submerged underwater, water was able to leak into this container and ruined the dog food, so we do not recommend using this container for outside storage, especially if you live in a particularly wet climate. 

Aside from this design flaw, our tester loved how easy it was to clean this container. They also noted that the design of this container made it easy to set it out of the way in your pantry and not worry about a dog food smell affecting other food items. The included scoop also makes it easy to fill your dog’s food bowl, while the thick plastic will prevent any especially curious pets from getting into the container and breaking it.

Despite this concern, our tester said that she thought it would be great for camping, or other travel, because of its durable design and materials.

Final Verdict

The IRIS Airtight Food Storage Container has plenty of room to fit 35 pounds worth of dog food and treats, but if you prefer less plastic, the Simplehuman Pet Food Can is a worthwhile splurge that’s constructed of stainless steel and has an airtight gasket closure.

Buddeez "Bag-In" Pet Food Dispenser : While this storage container has a high capacity and passed our performance tests, our tester noted that it would be difficult to pick up and pour out food when the container is completely full. She also said that the top was easy to not properly lock, so if not locked, this container could spill when tipped over.

How We Tested the Dog Food Containers

We researched and bought 26 pet food containers for testing in  The Lab  to put their claims of airtight seals and weatherproof design to the test. Our testers first evaluated the  design  of the containers, noting features such as wheels, carrying handles, scoops, and material. To test  performance , our testers filled each container with food and shook and tipped it over, noting if the top came off and if any food spilled out. If a container claimed to be airtight, our testers submerged the container (full of food) in water and checked to see if water leaked into the food chamber. 

Then, our testers evaluated the  durability  of each container after putting them through the performance tests based on whether the containers showed signs of damage or wear. Our testers also tested the  ease of cleaning  each container by dumping out the food and wiping the containers with wet towels. They made note of any difficult portions to clean and whether the opening was large enough for a thorough cleaning. After evaluating and testing each container, we asked our testers to consider the price of the container and rate its overall  value . 

For containers that we were not able to test in the Lab, we researched the best options, evaluating on a similar basis of performance reviews and material. We also made note of customer reviews and considered the containers' overall capacity and features to select the best.

What to Look for in a Dog Food Storage Container

Finding the right container is a balancing act—too big, and food could go stale or rancid before you get to the bottom, but too small, and you can't fit an entire bag inside. How big of a container you'll need will depend on how much your dog eats and varies according to their size and diet, but aim for one that fits about a 30-day supply of food to prevent spoilage.

While it's best to seal the entire bag of food inside a dog food container rather than emptying the food directly into the container, you'll still want as tight a seal as possible. This prevents bugs and moisture from getting in and spoiling your dog's food. Airtight options, like a screw top or gasket seals, are best.

Plastic, glass, and stainless steel are some of the most common materials used to make dog food storage containers. All are acceptable, but if you’re choosing plastic, we recommend making sure it’s food-grade and free of BPA, which is an endocrine disrupter that dogs may be exposed to via food containers and packaging.

Whether you're storing food directly in the container or putting the entire bag of dog food in, you'll want something that's easy to wash with soap and water. After cleaning, always let the container fully dry before adding more pet food or sealing it closed.

As long as it’s made with food-grade plastic, it’s safe to store dog food in a plastic container, but we do recommend avoiding plastics that contain BPA to reduce your dog's exposure to this chemical.

If you’re worried about the food coming into contact with the plastic, you can also keep the food in its original bag and put the entire thing into the plastic container.

The best way to keep pests out of dog containers is to choose an airtight, ant- and pest-proof container and make sure that it’s tightly sealed every time you’re done scooping food out of it. These containers also keep humidity away from the dog food and keep it fresh as long as possible.

Dog food containers don’t  need  to be airtight, but the food lasts longer and stays fresher, and pests—like ants, bugs, and rodents—can’t get to it if it is. As soon as dog food is exposed to air, humidity, and higher temperatures, it starts to break down and lose its freshness. While your dog may still be OK with eating it, it’s akin to you eating food that’s gone stale.

When you bring a dog into your family, there are so many exciting things to get — plushy beds, toys, and collars — but you also have to remember the practical things like dog food storage containers. You don’t want to spend an exorbitant amount of money on your dog food brand of choice only to have it spill or dry out due to a flimsy storage container.

We put 26 of the top-rated dog food storage containers to the test to see which excelled in design, performance, and durability (as well as how easy it was to clean!). Several performed well under duress, withstanding impacts and water dunks and keeping the food contained. After comparing these qualities, we chose the ones we’d feel confident using for our own dogs, and seven came out ahead.

“Moisture, air, temperature fluctuations, and time make an algorithm that determines the shelf life of your pet's food,” board-certified veterinary nutritionist Emily Luisana, DVM, DACVIM, tells PEOPLE. “Too much of any of these aspects may change the taste, nutritional value and/or promote the growth of mold or bacteria.” That’s why choosing the right container and practicing good hygiene when feeding your dog are so important. We loved the Iris Airtight Food Storage Container for its intuitive design, how it withstood impacts (simulating excited dogs at meal times!), and its ease of cleaning.

It’s not entirely airtight.

The Iris Airtight Food Storage Container earned perfect scores across the board, making it an easy pick for our best overall dog food container. Our tester said this product was simple from the beginning with an “easy-to-open latch on the lid” and “wide opening so it’s easy to pour food inside.”

Throughout our testing process, this dog food container held up to intense impacts — representing large dogs who simply can’t wait for you to open the container (#hangry!). Our tester said this model “can be vigorously shaken and no food will come out” and that the “lid stayed in place” even after being beat up a bit. 

Once you’ve been using the container for a while, and are ready to give it a good cleaning, it will be a simple task with this model. Our tester said it “was very easy to clean and wipe down the inside of the container.”

The only hiccup was the claim that it’s airtight. During our dunk test, some water did get into the container, but complete submergence in water is unlikely, so that’s not a dealbreaker for us. With an included scoop, two chambers for different foods, and wheels for easy mobility, we absolutely love this dog food storage container.

This dog food storage container offers a simple design, durability, and a low price point.

It’s not completely airtight, and it did spill some food when knocked over.

We love a good deal, and this dog food storage container offers a simple solution to food storage needs at an affordable price. This is a smaller container — holding up to 10 pounds of food — so it would be ideal for a smaller pet or a dog living in a small apartment. “I could see it easily fitting into a drawer or smaller cabinet,” our tester said. 

When tested for airtightness and durability, this container was susceptible to submergence in water and spilled some food when pushed over. That being said, our tester gave it a higher durability score than the larger version of this same food container, and the “fresh-tite” seal should keep food fresh. The shape and size of this container also make it extremely easy to clean.

While this is a budget option, and may not offer the bells and whistles of other models on our list, it provides a secure and fresh place to store your dog’s food for a budget-friendly price. If you’re looking for a basic dog food storage container that’s functional and won’t break the bank, this is the one for you.

This premium storage container is ideal due to its airtight chamber, sturdy design, and resistance to impacts.

It’s not as easy to clean.

If you’re willing to drop a dime on a dog food storage container, this is the one you should go for. Our tester described this container as “extremely durable and able to withstand tips and falls.” He said, “Nothing broke when it was dropped and tipped [over],” and following this test, the “lid [was] still on airtight.”

This bin actually proved to be airtight too, because when it was fully submerged underwater, the food stayed completely dry! It was “double locked” with an “airtight seal” according to our tester, and all the food “remained in normal condition” after the test without any sogginess. 

The only mild complaint is the lack of scoop and difficulty cleaning the inside of this container. “The outside is made of a more coarse plastic which makes things stick to it easier, causing a harder cleanup.” Our tester also said it was “hard to clean the inside due to the design and smaller opening,” and that “the rubber seal absorbs the dog food.” 

While this isn’t a feat of interior design by any means, it is a solid and highly durable food storage container that will keep your dog’s food secure (even when facing the outdoor elements!). Its secure lid and lock will keep out moisture, rodents, and trap any dog food smells within. Our tester said he “would definitely purchase” this container.

Best Airtight

This airtight container stays true to its name because it is actually waterproof, and easy to use and clean.

The stainless steel material can dent if kicked.

This stainless steel container is sleek on the outside and efficient on the inside. With a simple lid and latch combo, wide space for pouring food, and secure and airtight chamber, this container will keep your dog’s food fresh longer, and protect it from bugs and accidental spills. Our tester appreciated the “liner bin that is easy to remove” and the wheels which provide mobility.

She said during the impact test, it remained “perfect and secure” and “no food fell out.” The magnetic scoop also stayed in place, making it easy to find when you need it (right inside the lid). During the water test, this container impressed our team with its ability to keep food dry. Despite being completely submerged, and some water seeping into the exterior chamber, the internal bin where the food is kept remained dry.

While our tester observed that the stainless steel material might not hold up well to scratches and dents, it does provide stability. It’s also “super easy to clean,” since you can pull the liner bin out and just rinse it in the sink. Overall, we really appreciate all of the features of this container and that it lives up to its title of “airtight.”

Best for Outdoors

This fortress of a storage container is perfect for outdoors as it can survive heavy impacts, hold up against inclement weather, and keep food protected from critters.

There are no airtight sealants and the lid is somewhat tricky to put on.

If you need an outdoor dog food storage container, the Behrens Galvanized Steel Can will keep your pet’s food secure. Our tester noted that this can passed the shake test beautifully — “when turned upside down and shaken, no food came out.”

With stellar impact-resistance, this can was “extremely durable and able to sustain being kicked, pushed, and tipped over,” said our tester. “[The] container held up perfectly and showed absolutely no signs of wear and tear.” He also said the can was easy to clean — you can just give it a once-over with a cleaning wipe. 

He did note that there is no pour spout or airtight sealant, and the lid “did not easily go on,” but these aren’t dealbreakers to us. The lid having a tight fit makes it more secure from pests and spills, and you shouldn’t be pouring food directly into the container anyway, so there’s no need for a pour spout. This dog food storage container is well-priced for the value, and would make a great addition to any dog owner’s backyard .

Best for Small Dogs

This small container is ideal for little dogs and offers a whimsical design, easy maintenance, and durability.

It’s not waterproof.

This 15-pound storage container has just enough space for small dog food. The exterior offers several design choices with playful expressions and prints — the one we ordered featured an adorable bulldog holding the word “food” in script. Our tester was pleased with the sturdy latch, and “loved that this came with a scooper and has a spot for it to be hooked in.”

She said since this container performed well with the shake and tilt test, but failed the dunk test, she believes it would be more effective as an indoor container. “I think the latch works really well and a dog would not be able to get it open.”

Our tester appreciated the easy cleaning of this container as well as under the lid. “The scoop can [also] be thrown in the dishwasher,” she added. She described this container as a “great value” and we have to agree. Considering all of the qualities, this container is a solid purchase for someone with a small dog, and should last for years to come.

Best for Travel

This simple but effective container is perfect for food on the go, and offers durability for travel.

It’s somewhat difficult to wash.

If you like to take your dogs on adventures with you, but don’t want to risk missing a meal time, consider using this kibble carrier for food on the go! This vinyl bag is PVC-free, and insulated with a food-safe PEVA liner. Our tester said it was “very easy to open and close,” and doesn’t seem susceptible to punctures.

The exterior fabric “with a rubberized lining” makes this bag highly durable. It passed the shake test without error and kept all the food intact within. “The top of the bag folds down and closes like a dry bag,” our tester said. 

On each side, there are extra storage pockets for dog treats , waste bags, and anything else you may want to bring with you. The special hex-weave material helps keep out critters and keep in any oils or odors from the kibble. Cleaning requires hand washing and air drying, which our tester said would be “difficult with the rubber lining.” Overall, we believe this is a perfect travel container to have your dog’s food on hand when you go out on your next outing.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Dog Food Storage Container

The size, or capacity, of your dog food container will depend on the amount of food you need to store. Dog food bags for large dog breeds tend to mimic the size of the dogs, so you’ll need a larger container — say enough for a 50-pound bag — to properly store the food. For smaller dogs, the kibble and bags themselves tend to be smaller (10-to-15-pound bags), so a more compact container would work just fine.

Airtight Seal

If possible, try to look for a dog food storage container with an airtight seal. During our tests, few containers survived the dunk test (though situations where your container will be completely submerged underwater are rare) so having an airtight seal can keep the food fresh longer, and in most cases, keep moisture out. 

When you’re looking at food storage containers (as well as dog bowls) you should consider the material. Most dog food storage containers are made from plastic or stainless steel. “Investigating this, and other realities of pet food handling, was the focus of a study I published earlier this year with North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine,” says Dr. Luisana. Her study focused on bowls, but the materials are the same, so her findings also apply to storage containers. 

“We found no difference in bacterial counts between plastic bowls and less porous materials such as stainless steel or ceramic bowls,” she says. “Additionally, bowl material may affect the taste of food for some animals. For example, plastic bowls may retain odors or food residues and pets receiving certain medications such as chemotherapy may be adverse to metal bowls.” Where you store the food container will also determine which material is the better choice for you.

Storage Location

Where you plan to store the dog food will affect the qualities you need to look for. If you’re keeping the container inside in your kitchen or pantry, then you’ll likely want a secure latch your dog can’t get into and a well-designed container that looks nice in your home. If you’re storing the container outdoors or in a garage, you’ll want to make sure it’s airtight to keep moisture and small critters out, and that the exterior is highly durable to withstand inclement weather.

Generally yes, although you should check to make sure the plastic is BPA free. BPA, or bisphenol A, is a harmful chemical used to make plastics, especially storage for food and drink products. According to Brent A. Bauer, M.D. at The Mayo Clinic, BPA can seep into foods from containers themselves, and pose harm to those ingesting the food. While it’s FDA-safe in small amounts, consistent exposure can negatively affect your health, so it’s best to stay away from it when possible. BPA-free containers will have it marked on the label.

The short answer is no. “The most common misconception I see regarding pet food storage is the container,” says Dr. Luisana. “Most pet owners dump the contents of a pet food bag into a container, but this actually can make the food degrade faster, and can convey old tastes or bacteria to a new batch of food. If pet food has direct contact with the container, fat can separate from food over time which can promote rancidity. Some owners even report seeing their pet become less interested in the food as it gets to the bottom of the barrel. Pet food manufacturers typically create their bag as part of their storage system and may study the food's shelf life in this way.” 

Of course, dog food bags don’t always go with the aesthetic of our homes, and if not sealed properly can contribute to stale food, so a container is still necessary. “I recommend keeping food in the original bag, rolling it down tightly to remove excess air, and then putting this bag in an airtight container. Keeping the bag also allows you to have information you may need in case there is a recall or if your vet has questions about your pet's food,” she says.

Dr. Luisana actually studied pet food handling and storage as part of her postdoctoral studies and co-authored a research article about dog feeding practices . “Most of us wouldn’t eat off of dirty dishes, but we found that 22 percent of dog owners in our study washed their pet food bowl only once weekly (and 18 percent washed less than every three months or not at all),” she says. “Dirty pet bowls can be sources of bacteria and other studies have found pathogenic strains in bowls. This could be especially concerning in households where pets or people are immunosuppressed or those with young children.” 

The same thought applies to dog food storage containers — they need regular cleaning to keep out harmful bacteria and keep your pet (and the rest of your household) safe! The FDA suggests cleaning out the container in between placing each new bag of kibble. “A few other tips for safe pet food handling include washing your hands before and after feeding your pet, avoiding foods that have a high risk of contamination (like raw foods), and not using the same surface to prepare your pet's food as human food,” says Dr. Luisana.

How We Tested Dog Food Storage Containers

To find the most worthy of dog food storage containers, we poured kibble into 26 different containers and put them to the test — looking at design, performance and durability, and ease of cleaning. Our testers considered how user-friendly each container was, how secure the latch was (dog-proof?), and how it looked to rate the design. Then came the physical portion of tests. By shaking, tipping, and dunking these containers underwater, our testers determined which ones would stand the test of time — excited dogs knocking them over, sitting outside in the rain and keeping food dry, protecting against spills, staleness, and other hazards. Finally, they emptied the containers and wiped them down to see how easy or difficult they were to clean. Using all of these insights and considering the price, the testers assigned each container an overall value, and we used those to choose our top seven dog food storage containers.

To find the best calming treats for dogs, we sought the advice of Dr. Hammond and Lisa Lippman, D.V.M. , a veterinarian and director of virtual medicine for Bond Vet , asking them to weigh in on the ingredients they recommend for canine patients. Note that our list omits CBD and hemp dog treats , as our GH Institute nutrition experts don't yet believe there's enough clinical research to recommend them for dog anxiety. While there is some research showing CBD can help dogs with pain, Dr. Hammond says that she recommends using it "with caution and after consultation with a veterinarian." In general, it's good advice to speak to your veterinarian before feeding any dietary supplement to your dog .

Kradle is Dr. Hammond's top choice for calming dog treats. "It incorporates natural ingredients such as passionflower and L-tryptophan [an amino acid], which have been shown to have calming effects on dogs, " she said. The brand's soft Bliss Bars are in a dog-pleasing peanut butter-bacon flavor.

The brand suggests that you give a serving before a stressful event such as you leaving for work (separation anxiety is real!), a thunderstorm rolling in or a planned car ride. These can get pricey, especially if you have a big dog or intend to use these daily. For dogs who like to gnaw, the brand also makes hard chews .

Greenies chicken-flavored calming supplements has the only under-$20 pricetag on our list, and it's also an easy brand to find in many supermarkets, pet stores and mass merchants. The brand touts it for use in times of occasional (but normal) canine stress based on its lead ingredients, L-tryptophan and L-theanine (another amino acid), which may help reduce anxiety and stabilize mood , respectively.

These are relatively new for Greenies so there's not as many online reviews to read, but it's is a trusted brand that also makes some of our favorite cat treats .

Purina formulates this daily probiotic supplement for dogs that display general anxiety in the form of pacing, spinning, whining and/or barking. The brand says its proprietary strain of probiotics can help calm your dog, but there is no clinical study on it. We like that the powder is simple to sprinkle over your dog's regular food.

The brand cautions that it might take up to six weeks to see results, which can feel like a long stretch to dog owners, but some online reviewers report seeing much faster improvement. If you just want to calm your dog in a one-time stressful situation, such as a vet visit, you might want something more fast-acting.

Composure is a brand that Dr. Lippman trusts, and these chews are marketed as a way to calm a dog for a single stressful event that pops up from time to time, such as the need for a nail clipping or grooming session, fireworks or if you hear a thunderstorm rolling in.

Vetri Science says Composure will start working in a half hour, so you don't have to wait for weeks to see a behavior change — but these are not meant to be daily supplements, just as needed during stressful events. Like others, its powered by L-tryptophan and L-theanine, but the first ingredient is actually thiamine, a B vitamin, which, when deficient, can affect a dog's nervous system .

If you have a hyper or anxious puppy, this blend may be for them, made for a dog from 8 weeks to 12 months old . It uses chamomile and passionflower, two of the ingredients recommended by Dr. Hammond, plus other plant-based ingredients such as valerian and ginger. The small, soft bites are turkey flavored. Zesty Paws also makes a peanut butter flavor for fully grown dogs, and the supplements have more than 14,000 five-star Amazon reviews.

The right dose of melatonin can make an animal sleepy , so if that's what you're hoping to achieve — your dog napping in the car instead of whining at the window, or resting sleepily while visitors are over for dinner — this could be the calming dog treat for you. These chews also contain plenty of other calming ingredients such as chamomile, passionflower and L-tryptophan.

But note that an incorrect dose of melatonin can sometimes produce the opposite effect and increase a dog's heart rate or cause confusion , so dose carefully. If you want to further promote a calming atmosphere you might also try the brand's herbal calming room spray .

One pet owner with an anxious Spaniel swears these chews work wonders. "It's a vigorous chew experience, and he's always calm and happy afterward ," they said. So as an alternative to giving your dog a treat with calming ingredients, you can give your dog a long-lasting chew treat that will calm his troubles . It keeps a dog busy and distracted! And bully sticks are pricey, but made with just one single, natural ingredient.

How we chose the best calming dog treats

Two veterinary experts weighed in on this story: Sylvalyn Hammond , D.V.M., a general practice veterinarian in South Carolina, and Lisa Lippman , D.V.M., veterinarian and director of virtual medicine for Bond Vet , a chain of veterinary offices up and down the East Coast. We also checked in with Katie Brenner, a compliance officer with the National Animal Supplement Council .

On top of that, we consulted our in-house Good Housekeeping Institute experts on this guide, including Sabina Wizemann , a chemist who substantiates claims and evaluates products for the Good Housekeeping Seal , and Stefani Sassos , a registered dietitian who directs the Nutrition Lab. Last but not least, we interviewed real-life dog owners and sifted through online reviews for a full picture of real-life use of canine dietary supplements.

What to look for when shopping for calming dog treats

"Supplements are not tightly FDA-regulated , and different things may work for different pets," Dr. Lippman says. "So it's really about looking for trusted brands and trying them out to see what works for your pet."

Dr. Hammond agrees. "Every pet is unique, and individual factors such as age, breed, health status and concurrent medications must be considered before starting any new supplement regimen," which is why it's smart to first check in with your vet. Then, when shopping, consider:

• Passionflower: Also a calming herb used for anxiety and sleep issues .
• Ashwagandha: Traditional, medicinal plant used to combat stress .
• L-theanine: A natural amino acid that can promote relaxation .
• L-tryptophan: An essential amino acid that works with serotonin and melatonin to help reduce anxiety . L-tryptophan is not made by a dog's body so it can only be consumed as food or treats.
• Ginger: There is some evidence that ginger can help with motion sickness and vomiting .
• Rosemary: This herb is thought to possibly enhance a dog's mood .
• Valerian: A flowering plant known for its sedative qualities .
• Melatonin: A sleep-regulating hormone that can help with stress .

✔️ Made in the U.S.: Dr. Hammond prefers treats that aren't imported, because the FDA has established Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for American companies to follow that help ensure the safe composition of all dietary supplements, including ones for pets. All the treats on our list are made in the U.S., though some ingredients are globally sourced.

✔️ NASC-Certified: Both vets recommend looking for the NASC-Certified seal on dog supplements. Brands that are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council pay to be audited for quality so they can carry that third-party certification. When to see a vet

If calming treats aren't helping, there is more to try. "There are non-treat products to help calm dogs, like ThunderShirts , which provide gentle pressure to help reduce anxiety," Dr. Hammond says. "There are calming sprays containing pheromones, plus environmental modifications such as creating a quiet, safe space for your dog during stressful events. Regular exercise, mental stimulation and positive reinforcement can also contribute to overall stress reduction in dogs."

Need more help? Consult your vet about a prescription. "When the anxiety is really bad, see your vet because oftentimes, drugs are really helpful," Dr. Lippman says. "Drugs are a big part of a vet practice in that we want to do things that take stress off of our animals. It's better living through chemistry."
