Whatever Happened To Hoodie Pillow After Shark Tank?

Robert Herjavec Emmys Statue

As fans of ABC's business investment reality series "Shark Tank" are well aware, winning on-air hardly guarantees a company's sustained success. In fact, long-term growth seems to be determined far more by traditional business planning than any one "Shark Tank" investment. For instance, the owners of grooming product company S.W.A.G. Essentials walked away from "Shark Tank" empty-handed, but were so successful after their TV appearance that they were featured in a follow-up segment on a later season. Meanwhile, despite toy company PopUp Play securing an on-air win, it's no longer in business today.

Hoodie Pillow, which appeared on "Shark Tank" Season 4, achieved a series milestone as the first business with a returning entrepreneur at its helm. Rebecca Rescate initially appeared on "Shark Tank" to promote a product designed to toilet train cats called CitiKitty, and successfully grew that business in her episode's wake. Rescate told Shark Tank Blog that Hoodie Pillow inventor Chris Hindley approached her husband about a partnership, which ultimately led to her return to "Shark Tank."

Hindley and Rescate successfully pitched the Hoodie Pillow — which, as its name more-or-less indicates, was a pillowcase with an attached hooded sweatshirt-inspired hood — and walked away with a $90 thousand promise from Robert Herjavec. However, that was in 2013, leaving plenty of room for Hoodie Pillow to change in the near-decade since the episode's premiere.

Hoodie Pillow shifted its business model and inspired imitators

When Chris Hindley and Rebecca Rescate pitched the Hoodie Pillow on "Shark Tank," they showcased a hooded pillowcase that could be fitted over a standard-sized pillow. Now, however, visiting the Hoodie Pillow website reveals that the company no longer sells what was once its flagship product. Instead, their principal offering is a neck pillow with an attached hood, available in both inflatable and memory foam models. Also for sale are hooded blankets, a hooded beach towel, and a gym bag constructed from a heather gray hooded sweatshirt-reminiscent material.

In fact, it appears that Hoodie Pillow introduced its inflatable travel pillow not long after appearing on "Shark Tank," as evidenced by a 2014 HelloGiggles post about travel accessories listing the inflatable Hoodie Pillow among its recommendations. Perhaps the biggest indicator of the Hoodie Pillow's growth is luxury fashion brand Balenciaga selling its own hooded neck pillow, which a post by HypeBeast reveals the company introduced in 2021. However, whereas the inflatable Hoodie Pillow retails for $29.95, Balenciaga is asking $695 for its travel pillow.

So, while Hoodie Pillow may have shifted its focus, the company seems to now be a big enough success that one of the most well-known names in high fashion is getting in on the action with its own take on the "Shark Tank" company's signature product.

Hoodie Pillow Update | Season 4

Entrepreneur Chris Hindley and Shark Tank veteran Rebecca Rescate, have created a pillow with a hood attached to it! They say people who love hoodies, can’t get enough of their quirky product, but will it earn them a deal on Shark Tank Season 4? Find out in our Hoodie Pillow update!

Shark Tank Hoodie Pillow Update

Hoodie Pillow Update

  • Entrepreneurs: Chris Hindley and Rebecca Rescate
  • Business: Pillow with a hood
  • Ask: $90,000 for 15% equity
  • Result: $90,000 for 20% equity
  • Shark: Robert Herjavec

The sharks were surprised when Rebecca, an entrepreneur that appeared on Season 2 of Shark Tank , walked through the door with Chris. Rebecca had clinched a deal with Kevin Harrington for her product and company CitiKitty, and had returned alongside Chris, as a 30% stakeholder in his brainchild, Hoodie Pillow.

HoodiePillow, great for use while traveling, during long trips or simply at home. Includes two drawstrings to adjust head size and level of hooded comfort. Inflatable inner pillow - deflate and fold for storage between use.

Rebecca and Chris said they had already sold 3,000 units in the past three weeks. In eight weeks of sales, Chris said that Hoodie Pillow had earned $600,000 revenue, all stemming from a single Facebook link that went viral.

Robert Herjavec referred to CitiKitty’s success, stating the product solved a problem. He was not quite sure what problem a hooded pillow would solve. Rebecca shut it down, and said it didn’t matter. The fact of the matter was that 30 million college students in America were an easy market for the product, in her opinion.

Kevin O’Leary asked what the plan for the $90,000 would be, and learned that Chris intended to launch low-cost, high-yield marketing on social media platforms before creating a commercial. Daymond asked why none of the invested capital would contribute to production, but Chris said they had production working smoothly already.

At this juncture, Chris also revealed another product in the line– the Hoodie Travel Pillow. Instead of a regular pillow, the Travel Pillow was a neck pillow with a hood which, in Robert’s opinion, solved a real problem.

Kevin needed no further explanation, and offered $90,000 in exchange for 33%. He added one more proviso to his deal– Chris and Rebecca were not permitted to take money from the business unless it was an equal disbursement to all partners, which included him. Rebecca was skeptical of his offer, but Kevin on the other hand, saw no issue, and said that equal partnership protected his investment, especially when he went to “cash out” down the line.

Rebecca honed in on Mr. Wonderful’s usage of the terms “cash out”, and accused him of not adding value beyond money. Kevin didn’t deny that he was not interested in growing Hoodie Pillow. He only sought to finance it. Chris countered Kevin, asking if he would do $100,000 for 25% equity. Kevin declined, stating that he liked his offer, and he thought it was fair.

Daymond jumped in here with the same offer. He said he would offer the $90,000 for 33%, or one-third equity, and, unlike Kevin, he didn’t care about disbursements or Chris and Rebecca taking money from the business as they saw fit. However, Daymond didn’t want to waste time and asked them to make the decision within ten seconds. Rebecca said she felt it would be unfair to take the deal without allowing the other sharks to speak. For that reason, Daymond went out.

Barbara Corcoran made an offer next, stating she trusted Rebecca, but not the Hoodie Pillow. To mitigate her perceived risk, Barbara offered $90,000 in exchange for 40% equity, asked that Daymond come back in and join her, and added a $0.10 royalty on every unit sold. Daymond agreed to come back in, but again asked for Rebecca and Chris to give an immediate answer.

Rebecca felt 40% equity was way too high, and that Barbara’s perception of the risk was incorrect. Kevin tried to weasel in by asking Daymond to throw Barbara under the bus, but Daymond said he would stay with Barbara.

Chris countered Daymond and Barbara, asking if they’d come down to 30%. Barbara said she would meet them in the middle at 35%, which Rebecca thought about, then declined. Robert noticed Rebecca thinking things over, and said it was clear she had a number in mind. Rebecca confirmed Robert’s observation, and revealed that she was hoping to clinch a deal for $90,000 in exchange for 20% equity. Upon hearing this, Barbara went out.

Finally, Robert made an offer for exactly what Rebecca asked for– $90,000 in exchange for 20% equity. He said he missed out the first time she was on the tank, and he didn’t want to miss out on it again. After a brief hesitation, Chris accepted the deal.

Did lightning strike twice for Rebecca? Did Robert help Hoodie Pillow grow to massive proportions? Keep reading our Hoodie Pillow update to find out!

Research for our Hoodie Pillow update revealed fantastic news! While the deal with Robert never did close, the episode drove a big spike in sales for the company. The product that appeared on the show was eventually discontinued, but they expanded their line with a new focus on travel items. You can shop their products on the Hoodie Pillow website, and as well as on Amazon. As of 2023, annual revenue is estimated to be around $5 million!

It fits like a standard neck pillow, but has the unique hood and drawstrings attached. With the HoodiePillow and its travel companion you can sleep anywhere, anytime.

The creators of Hoodie Pillow went into the Shark Tank asking for $90k for a 15% share of the company.  Robert Herjevic invested in this product for a 20% stake.

The Hoodie Pillow Shark Tank Recap

Rebecca and Chris enter seeking $90k for 15% of the business. After the pitch, Daymond demonstrates the product on a couch set up for the presentation. The Sharks find the product a bit comical at first, until Rebecca tells them about the 3,000 sales they made in the first 8 weeks in business. Kevin jumps in and offers $90k for a 33% with the caveat they all “cash out” at the same time. Chris counters with 25% for $100K, but good old Mr. Wonderful won’t budge. Daymond offers $90K for a third of the company and employs a ten second clock for a decision. Barbara then offers $90K for 40% plus a ten cent royalty, but only if Daymond goes in with her.

Daymond wants an immediate answer and Chris counters with $90K for 30%. Barbara asks if they’ll split the difference at 35%, but Rebecca stands firm on $90K for 20%.  Robert soaks all this action up and offers $90K for 20%. He saw what Rebecca did with CitiKitty and he doesn’t want to miss out on Hoodie Pillow. Chris accepts Robert’s offer, and there are smiles all around!

The Hoodie Pillow Shark Tank Update

The Monday following the the original air date, Rebecca and Chris report over 4,000 units sold. They project 8,000 units for the month! The deal with Robert wasn’t finalized yet, but the parties were still “in talks.” The deal with Robert ultimately never closed. The company added pillow cases, kids pillows, inflatable pillows, memory foam hooded pillows, hooded beach towels, bags and kids’ Hoodie Pillows with animated characters on them. They no longer sell the version of the product that appeared on Shark Tank.

As of July, 2022, the company is still in business and earns $5 million in annual revenue.

When I heard them describe the product I thought the hoodie would be padded and still part of a sweater. Great, I wear a zip up sweater into the plane and when I get tired and want something padded to sleep on I put on the hoodie without having to shuffle around for a pillow and bother anyone. Nope, not what the product is. Now I have to carry an additional thing into the plane when I’m already taking in a carry-on because of baggage fees? No thanks. And it looks uber silly–both the full size and travel versions–without a sweater attached. The Sharks knew that right away and had laughs about it but suddenly forgot because they thought the lady had the personality to sell you air if she had to. Not buying it.

You do realize that it’s inflatable? So it takes up less space than a t shirt when in a carry on bag.

HoodiePillow Review: An Ingenious Twist on Your Average Travel Pillow

May 3, 2015 By Thither Staff Leave a Comment

hoodie pillow review

The HoodiePillow, best known for it’s appearance on Shark Tank ( season 4, episode 15 ) is basically a “U” shaped pillow with a hood attached to it. Albeit a simple adaptation to a normal travel pillow, the HoodiePillow has benefits that will make you wonder how you lived with a normal “U” shaped pillow.

Watch this video below for a look into using the HoodiePillow:

I am reviewing the memory foam HoodiePillow , although you can also get an inflatable HoodiePillow . My HoodiePillow is heather grey, but you can also get the pillow in several other colors.

  • Unique design
  • Added privacy
  • Warm and cozy
  • Memory foam
  • Soft and comfy

We wear hoodies because they’re comfortable – and that is exactly why you’d wear a HoodiePillow .

The hood of the pillow adds comfort and warmth which is great if you’re bald or get cold in planes.

The HoodiePillow’s hood looks as if it was taken directly off of a sweatshirt, as it is made of the same material. In fact, when walking around the house with my HoodiePillow on, my dad asked me, “When did you get that grey hoodie?”, just for him to later figure out that there was no shirt, just a hood.

wearing the hoodie pillow

It’s the subtle things that stand out in terms of design, and I really appreciate how the HoodiePillow has metal tipped drawstrings. It really makes the pillow altogether feel built to last.

With the HoodiePillow, you won’t need an eye mask since the hood is large enough to cover the eyes and even the nose if you tighten the drawstrings enough. During an overnight flights when your seat neighbor won’t turn their reading light off, the hood will come in handy. Also, since some planes smell weird, the hood’s ability to cover your nose makes for an easy and unobvious way to cover your nose.

The hood as a whole allows you to isolate yourself and get some privacy, without having to upgrade to first class.

hoodie pillow review

As for the appearance of the pillow, I’ve noticed that a lot of people seem to disregard the HoodiePillow as a  young people  thing. True, I kind of feel like a cross between Darth Sidious and Eminem plus a massive neck tumor when wearing the HoodiePillow, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s just for teens with raging hormones. As much as hoodies are associated with teenage rebellion , they are completely practical and the HoodiePillow is well suited for people of all ages.

hoodie pillow covers eyes

  • Not very supportive
  • Not machine washable

Since this pillow is made of memory foam, the HoodiePillow is expectedly bulky. If you’re looking for a lighter weight option, HoodiePillow also makes an inflatable variation , although it may not be as comfortable.

If you’re the type who drools when sleeping, unfortunately the HoodiePillow is not machine washable. This info was taken directly from the HoodiePillow website:

Q. How do I clean my Travel HoodiePillow? A. The Travel HoodiePillow is hand-washable and should be air dried.

Considering you wear the pillow like a hood, I’d feel the need to wash the pillow more often than other travel pillows, so it would be a nice addition if the pillow could be machine washable. The hood and pillow cover should be removable, like that of the Comfort Master travel pillow , so you could easily wash the exterior.

Another concern that I have is that the HoodiePillow is not as supportive as some other travel pillows, like the Travelrest or Cabeau Pillow . This is expected since “U” shaped pillows are not always the most supportive and you can’t really lean your head against the sides of it.

hoodiepillow travel

The Verdict:

Though it has some minor issues, the HoodiePillow does a fantastic job at combining the normal “U” pillow and a hood into one comfortable package. It’s reasonable priced as well, on sale currently at $19.95 USD.

The Hoodie Pillow on Shark Tank – 2024 Update

The Hoodie Pillow Before Shark Tank – A Comfortable Investment for a Mini Shark

Rebecca Rescate was no stranger to the Shark Tank. In series two of the show, back in May 2011, she had successfully struck a deal with Kevin Harrington for her product ‘CitiKitty’, a toilet training idea for cats. Alongside the publicity she received from the show, Kevin had helped her catapult her business to great heights with sales figures in the millions annually. Her success and business sense soon brought other entrepreneurs to her door.

Chris Hindley was a work colleague of Rebecca’s husband and approached her with his quirky but clever idea, the ‘Hoodie Pillow’. He wanted Rebecca to become his partner, but she was unwilling initially to invest in the company, instead offering to help Chris to get his business up and running. He asked her again after developing the product and this time she agreed to get behind the Hoodie Pillow. Using her own existing CitiKitty storage and distribution networks she was quickly able to incorporate Hoodie Pillow into her product line with minimal disruption.

The Hoodie Pillow on Shark Tank

When Chris and Rebecca appeared on Shark Tank in early 2013 they were seeking $90,000 for a 15% stake in the company.

Rebecca introduced herself to the sharks. She reminded them of her own successful appearance on the show previously and spoke about the success that CitiKitty had enjoyed since then. She asserted that her own experience had helped her to see the huge potential in The Hoodie Pillow.

Chris’s relaxed pitch spoke of the hoodie as one of the most popular items of clothing, but he mentioned the inherent problems with its design. It was impractical when lying down and the draw-strings pulled at the neck.

As soon as Chris had finished speaking, Rebecca jumped in, the pitched appeared to have been rehearsed extensively. After claiming that they had the answer to the problem of uncomfortable hoodies, the pair revealed their product, the Hoodie Pillow.

There was some slightly awkward laughter from the sharks as they finally saw the product for the first time. A red hood had been attached to a large red pillow, the Pillow Hoodie was appropriately named, that was exactly what it was.

‘Theres no discomfort, It allows you to turn your head into your comfy spot with ease.’ Chris explained. ‘Adjustable draw-strings allow you to block out light and dampen sound.’ he continued before explaining that there was a handy pocket included as well. If there was one thing the constantly grinning Chris knew, it was how to sell a hoodie.

Rebecca asked Daymond John if he’d like to try the Pillow Hoodie on. The stylish fashion guru was more than happy to. ‘I’ve sold a few hoods in my time.’ he commented as he stood up.

Stretching out on a couch, Daymond slipped on the red hood and rested his head back on the pillow. It was a slightly surreal sight to see the immaculately dressed Daymond in such a relaxed pose wearing a red hood. The sharks were enjoying it greatly.

‘I don’t think you could look more ridiculous.’ joked Robert as Daymond pointed a remote at him, perhaps hoping to find a mute button.

‘Or more relaxed.’ pointed out Rebecca, trying to keep things on track. ‘So far we’ve sold over 3,000 units. And we only launched eight weeks ago.’ she continued earnestly, but the sharks barely noticed. They were too busy enjoying the sight of Daymond wearing the hoodie and playing for laughs. Barbara Corcoran was almost choking with laughter.

Daymond modelling the Hoodie Pillow for the amusement of the sharks.

Kevin O’Leary wanted to get back to business, he asked about CitiKitty and how business was going. Rebecca informed him that the company had grown steadily, the current years sales were expected to reach $5 million.

‘Did you invent this product?’ Kevin asked Rebecca. She confirmed that Chris had invented it before approaching her to become a partner.

‘So you just got on board as an opportunist?’ asked Kevin.

‘I think they call me a mini-shark.’ answered Rebecca before confirming that she had bought a 30% stake in the company for a $15,000 investment.

Kevin asked about the valuation of the company, pointing out that when Rebecca had invested in the company it had been valued at around $50,000. He wanted to know how the current valuation of $600,000 had been calculated.

Chris explained that Rebecca had invested in the business when it was just an idea, it was now a proven product with an impressive early sales record. The Hoodie Pillow had also received a large amount of publicity, featuring on Good Morning America and The Today Show amongst other media promotions. ‘People see the Hoodie Pillow and they buy it.’ he asserted.

Robert admitted he could see the functionality of CitiKitty, it solved a problem. He wanted to know what problem the Hoodie Pillow solved.

Rebecca explained that there were 30 million students in America right at that moment who were laying within four feet of somebody else.

‘They’re all looking to spend their money on something stupid?’ asked Mark Cuban.

‘Its only twenty bucks.’ said Rebecca, before explaining the cost to produce it was only five dollars.

Daymond asked if the product had a patent. Chris confirmed that there were design and utility patents pending.

Kevin asked what the $90,000 investment was to be used for.

‘High-cost Low-yield marketing.’ answered Rebecca. When pressed for more details from Robert, she elaborated. It involved social marketing and online promotion in addition to a commercial that was in the pipeline. She stressed how effective a single Facebook video had been at directing traffic to the company website.

Chris announced that the company now had another product, it was essentially a Hoodie Pillow mini, a hood with a padded ring around the neck. Chris demonstrated it and it looked far less cumbersome than the home version of the Hoodie Pillow, smaller and able to be easily stuffed into a pocket. It was fairly cool looking as well, the sharks seemed to like it and made appreciative noises.

‘The reason I like that is it solves a problem.’ Robert said, looking much more interested now.

‘Can you bundle the two products together?’ asked Kevin.

Rebecca confirmed that they could and gave the sharks some more numbers. One and a half billion passengers flew from US airports every year. The Hoodie Pillow not only supported the neck and enabled a more comfortable sleeping experience when sitting down, it could also isolate passengers from their neighbors on a plane. This more streamlined version of the Hoodie Pillow retailed at only $15 and cost $3.50 to manufacture.

Kevin spoke with his usual directness ‘Even though this stuff may be crap, you sell a lot of it, and that’s what matters.’. Rebecca laughed and replied ‘Well thank you.’.

Kevin made an offer. He would supply the requested $90,000 but only in exchange for a one third share of the business. Rebecca and Chris would have to ensure that all three of them, equal shareholders, would pay themselves the same amount, at the same time.

‘When it comes time to cash out, I want to wet my beak at the same pace you are.’ explained Kevin, making it all sound entirely reasonable.

‘I’m hearing cash out, that’s all I’m hearing.’ Rebecca replied. ‘I don’t hear anything about helping us grow the business.’.

‘I don’t want to help you grow the business, I just want to invest in it.’ Kevin explained, ‘You haven’t got another offer so you should be careful.’ he continued, and he was right.

Rebecca however, wasn’t rushing to accept Kevin’s deal. There were a few moments of deadlocked silence until Chris made a counter offer to Kevin, he suggested a $100,000 investment in exchange for 25% of the business.

Kevin dismissed that idea, he liked his offer and made it clear he wasn’t going to be changing it.

‘I’d like to hear if there are other offers’ Rebecca said.

Daymond made an offer at this point, but it wasn’t an improvement. Matching Kevin’s existing offer of a 33% stake in exchange for a $90,000 investment. He liked the product and wanted to help sell it, but he was unwilling to offer more. He added some more pressure to the already harassed looking Rebecca and Chris, putting a ten second time limit on his offer before it would be revoked.

Barbara tried to speak but Daymond appeared to be trying to rush the pair into a deal. Unwilling to let Barbara speak he admitted ‘I’m excited and I do not want this price to go up.’

Rebecca again said that she would like to hear what the other sharks had to say, and that was it for Daymond. He rescinded his offer and dropped out of the negotiations.

Barbara Corcoran made an offer, she would invest the required $90,000 but only in exchange for 40% of the business. She added the additional condition that Daymond would take half of the deal, and the sharks would receive a royalty of ten cents per unit sold. She stressed that Daymond was the shark that was best suited to the product and would be best for the business.

Daymond agreed to join Barbara in the deal but Rebecca still wasn’t prepared to give that much of the company away.

Chris asked if Daymond and Barbara would be prepared to accept only 30% of the business. Barbara suggested a figure of 35% but Rebecca stuck to her guns. A 20% stake for $90,000 investment was what she wanted, and it seemed she wasn’t going to agree to less.

Barbara had heard enough by now, unable to get any form of compromise from Rebecca and Chris she dropped out of the negotiations as well.

The deadlock continued for a moment. The only offer still available for Pillow Hoodie was the one from Kevin. It didn’t look as if it was going to be accepted and he was clearly unwilling to amend it.

Suddenly, from nowhere, Robert Herjavec saved the day for Rebecca and Chris. He offered the originally requested amount, $90,000 in exchange for 20% of the business. He admitted he had missed out on investing in Rebecca once before and wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Chris accepted the offer and Robert shook hands with them both. After a tense and deadlocked round of negotiations, the tough ‘mini-shark’ Rebecca had achieved the deal she wanted.

The Hoodie Pillow After Shark Tank – 2024 Update

Unfortunately, the deal with Robert never went through. Still, the show had a profound effect on the business. Shortly after the segment aired, their sales went up to 4,000 units—a significant increase from what they were doing before appearing on Shark Tank. And by the end of the month, they had sold more than 8,000 units.

Fast forward to 2024 and the company is still up and running. If anything, their popularity has only increased over the past few years. For one thing, their products are now available at a number of retail stores including Bed Bath and Beyond. Not only that but they can also be found on Amazon.

In fact, reviews have been quite positive on the site with many customers praising the product for its sheer comfort. Others have noted that the neck pillows keep the head quite warm during cold nights. Keep in mind, however, that the memory foam version does flatten over time (several people have posted about this issue).

It’s worth noting, however, that they no longer sell the original Hoodie Pillow (the hooded pillowcase that can be fitted over a standard pillow). Rather, it has been replaced by a neck pillow with an attached hood, one that’s designed to block out light so that you can nap on the go.

Currently, there are two different models available—a memory foam version (retails for $39.99) and an inflatable version (retails for $29.95), the latter of which can be stored more easily. They also have a kid’s version that features various animal heads for $24.95.

Speaking of which, they also offer Princess Dress Blankets for $29.95. Currently, there are three designs to choose from- Brilliant Blue, Perfect Pink, and Rainbow Glow.

In addition to that, they also offer blankets—ones that come with a convenient pocket at the front. For example, you can use them for sleepovers or lounging around the house. If you want, you can also use it as a beach blanket. And they’re fairly affordable at $24.95 each.

That’s not all, they’ve also expanded their selection to include bags—travel duffel bags, to be exact. Made from premium sweatshirt material, they can be used as a workout bag, beach bag, or overnight bag and are available for $24.95.

Shipping is also free for all orders in the continental United States. You don’t even need a code – it’ll automatically come up during the checkout process. And for those who are interested, you can join their email newsletter for occasional coupon codes.

Meet HoodiePillow®, the genius patented invention of founder Chris Hindley. Whether you're a light sleeper, night-shift worker, frequent traveler, looking for added warmth or privacy, or just trying to catch some shut-eye while your significant other reads a book or watches TV, the HoodiePillow ® pillowcase and the Travel HoodiePillow ® inflatable neck pillow are for YOU!

Chris Hindley, HoodiePillow ® Founder

Chris Hindley - HoodiePillow Co-Founder

Hindley created the first HoodiePillow ® pillowcase to catch a nap during the day while his daughters slept. Friends and family immediately began asking for their own HoodiePillows after seeing his invention. Hindley quickly realized that the HoodiePillow ® was needed by so many more people than just sleep deprived parents - light sleepers, night shift workers, college students, children and adults with autism who like to feel "cocooned," hospital patients, traveling sports teams... and the list goes on.  Hindley was granted a patent for his invention in 2012 and in June of that year, HoodiePillow ® launched.

In September of 2012, Hindley and HoodiePillow ® co-founder Rebecca Rescate were selected from over 40,000 applicants to fly to Los Angeles to appear in an episode of ABC's wildly popular reality series Shark Tank . In addition to presenting the HoodiePillow ® pillowcase to the Sharks, Hindley and Rescate also premiered the Travel HoodiePillow ® inflatable travel neck pillow in the episode. This episode originally aired on February 8, 2013 and re-aired on June 14, 2013. Curious if the Sharks invested? Visit Shark Tank's site and watch episode 415.

Whatever Happened To Pluto Pillow After Shark Tank Season 12?

Pluto pillow product image

While there are countless customizable mattresses saturating the market, the same cannot be said about customized pillows on a comparable level. With that in mind, entrepreneurs Susana Saeliu and Kevin Li saw a need to fill a gap in the existing market for a truly customizable pillow experience, and thus, Pluto Pillow was born.

With several years of successful sales under their belt and a drive to meet what they believe to be a failure in the pillow industry to capitalize on the success of the personalized mattress industry, Saeliu and Li took their case before the sharks on "Shark Tank" on season 12. While the duo didn't walk away successfully securing a deal with any of the sharks, that didn't stop the expansion of their brand or the continued success of Pluto Pillow. Despite not making an investment deal with their pitch to the sharks, the founders have been busy growing the brand ever since, and Pluto Pillow is still successfully operating.

Why does Pluto Pillow claim to be so special?

There is an influx of pillows on the market, each claiming to scientifically be "the best" for your sleep health. However, what is considered to be the optimal pillow for a stomach sleeper may not be the best for someone who regularly sleeps on their side. Additionally, the fill material, outer material, thickness , and density preferences vary drastically between each sleeper, making what is considered to be the "best" pillow completely subjective based on the person. This is the argument of Saeliu and Li, who insist that choosing the right pillow is a far more personal and individualized experience than many people realize.

Pluto Pillow is hypoallergenic, with each being made with a foam inner core and a more plush, microfiber outer core that surrounds it. The ratio of foam to outer material is part of what Pluto can customize. Pluto Pillow takes each user's preferences into consideration based on an online quiz, which claims to uniquely match you with your ideal pillow based on a specified algorithm. The Pluto Pillow quiz also takes into consideration your body statistics, such as your height and weight, in addition to the way you regularly sleep. It also asks questions about your current pillow and mattress and whether or not you like them, as well as whether or not you prefer foam or fill material. Given your answers, there are more than 35 different possible pillows you can be matched with.

Pluto Pillow on Shark Tank

Saeliu and Li entered the Shark Tank seeking an investment of $400,000 for 5% equity in their company, with the implied valuation of $8 million. While the high valuation left the sharks skeptical, they still managed to receive one offer.

After their initial pitch to the sharks, Saeliu and Li presented each of them with their own customized pillows, specifically crafted to fit each of the shark's individual preferences (that the duo seemingly did some digging to find out beforehand.) During their continued pitch to the sharks, Saeliu and Li explained that they did $197,000 in sales in 2018, $473,000 in 2019, and $490,000 at the halfway mark of 2020 when they made their pitch.

Lori Greiner was the first to drop out, as she couldn't get on board with a pillow company with a relatively competitive market. Kevin O'Leary also dropped out because of the high valuation and asking amount, followed by Daniel Lubeyzky, who didn't feel as though he was the right fit either. Mark Cuban also dropped out, citing concerns he had as to whether or not the company had enough proven success to be considered a good investment.

Ultimately, it was Robert Herjavec who extended an offer to the pair, one of $400,000 for a 20% equity — much higher than their initial asking amount. Saeliu and Li countered at 9%, but Herjavec declined. After some consideration, the founders of Pluto Pillow decided to walk away without accepting the offer.

After not reaching a deal on Shark Tank

View this post on Instagram A post shared by PLUTO (@plutopillow)

Though they were not able to make a deal with any of the sharks, Saeliu and Li have still gone on to find continued success in their customized pillow endeavors. While it was not featured on the episode, Saelie and Li noted on their blog that they already had other investors involved by the time they made their appearance on Shark Tank. So, while they walked away from Robert's offer of $400,000 for 20% equity, it's worth noting that the company's success did not depend on them reaching a deal.

Fortunately for both Saeliu and Li, their airtime on Shark Tank and continued relevance in the media have only further contributed to their success. In fact, CNN Underscored named Pluto Pillow the "best pillow overall" for 2023. It has also been featured in and raved about in Architectural Digest, Cosmopolitan, House Beautiful Magazine, Oprah Daily, and more.

The company is still successfully operating, and you can order a Pluto Pillow for yourself on their official website . An original size Pluto Pillow is 24" x 16", and a longer 34" by 16" king size is also available. The original is currently ticketed at $125, while the king will run you $155. They have also expanded their collection to include PUFF , a companion body pillow, as well as POD , a 360-degree travel pillow with a patent pending design. The company also still regularly posts on its Instagram and Facebook pages.
