Travel Nevada hires Cortney Bloomer, Abigail Ortiz to state tourism development team
L to R: Cortney Bloomer and Abigail Ortiz
Travel Nevada’s Industry Development team welcomes two new team members tasked with bolstering the agency’s relationship with the industry’s tourism partners and overseeing the development of the state’s tourism offerings.
Cortney Bloomer joins the team as Destination Development Manager. In her previous roles as the Public Information Officer for Carson City Health and Human Services, Western Nevada Safe Routes to School Coordinator, and the Food Systems Manager at Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties, Bloomer knows the importance of collaborating with stakeholders from rural communities to develop programs and build coalitions to achieve shared goals.
Bloomer studied public health at West Virginia University, where she received her Master’s degree.
Travel Nevada’s industry development department also welcomes Abigail Ortiz to the team as Industry Relations Specialist covering northern Nevada. A Nevada native, Ortiz will work to further enhance Travel Nevada’s relationship with rural partners as she co-manages its rural grants program and annual Rural Roundup event.
“Cortney and Abigail are great additions to Travel Nevada,” said Antonette Eckert, Travel Nevada’s Chief Industry Development Officer. “Both are passionate about Nevada’s tourism industry and bring valuable skill sets to the team. We’re excited for our partners to meet them and forge ahead in fostering relationships and curating projects that impact the overall tourism economy.”

Boulder City Chamber of Commerce Partners with Travel Nevada
October 6, 2023 by Tina Cluver
The Boulder City Chamber of Commerce has been selected by Travel Nevada as one of six destinations in the state to be part of a new program to encourage destination tourism. The program, called Destination Development Destination (3D) , will assist the city in developing a 10-year destination plan. Jill Rowland-Lagan , Chief Operating Officer of Boulder City of Commerce provided the following information:
Boulder City is one of six destinations chosen by Travel Nevada to build its local tourism economy through an innovative new program and ultimately share in a one-time $2 million federally funded grant program. To give residents a chance to weigh in on possibilities, The Boulder City Chamber of Commerce is hosting a 90-minute listening session at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 11, at the Elaine K. Smith Center – 700 Wyoming Street. All are welcome to attend and share their thoughts in a session facilitated by a professional consulting team provided by Travel Nevada. Light refreshments will be served by Chilly Jilly’z. Attendees are welcome to stay afterward to learn more about Travel Nevada’s new Destination Development Demonstration (3D) Project from Cortney Bloomer, Destination Development Manager for Travel Nevada. The 3D Project is providing Boulder City with a customized 33-week planning process to create a 10-year destination plan. Once the plan is complete, the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce will have a chance to apply for hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to bring the concept to life. All six destinations were chosen in a competitive process last fall that attracted 16 applicants. Projects selected for development include guided experiences on tribal lands, a new Carson Valley arts and culture corridor, and a wide range of outdoors and heritage experiences in Nevada’s vast landscapes. Boulder City’s destination plan is set for completion this April. The 3D project jumpstarts Travel Nevada’s brand-new focus on destination development to expand the state’s tourism infrastructure and build rural economies by attracting more traveler spending. “The Destination Development programming will assist rural communities fill in the gaps that currently exist. It will more formally prepare their tourism efforts allowing for everyone to row in the same direction. It will also better leverage Travel Nevada’s rural marketing grant awards meant to attract and extend room night stays in Nevada. The result is a vastly better tourism experience and more responsible use of tax dollars for the entire State of Nevada”, stated Commissioner Jill Lagan, of the State of Nevada Commission on Tourism. To guide the 3D planning work, Travel Nevada selected Better Destinations, a Denver-based consultancy led by former Colorado state tourism director Cathy Ritter. The Better Destinations team also includes Mitch Nichols, president of Nichols Tourism Group in Bellingham, Wash., and Carl Ribaudo, president and chief strategist of SMG Consulting in South Lake Tahoe.
This is an exciting opportunity to showcase our wonderful city and the surrounding area to visitors. We’re looking forward to seeing some of YOUR suggestions at the meeting on October 11!

Nevada Says Ditch the Dice, Come for the Outdoors
Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift
April 19th, 2024 at 2:42 PM EDT
Nevada wants people to know that it has more than casinos and entertainment attractions like The Sphere. The state is investing in tourism that supports its local communities outside of Las Vegas.
Jesse Chase-Lubitz
Nevada has set its sights on a different kind of tourism. Rather than tout the famous casinos of Las Vegas, the state’s tourism division, Travel Nevada, is pushing rural tourism and the natural beauty of the state.
In 2022, the U.S. Economic Development Administration began disbursing $510 million in tourism grants to help states invest in marketing, infrastructure, workforce and other projects to strengthen their travel markets. Nevada received one of the largest grants – $13.5 million, of which Travel Nevada received $2.1 million . Over the past year, the state has started to hand out this grant money to rural areas.
“It’s our mission to get people beyond the bright lights, beyond the neons, and get out to experience the heart of Nevada,” said Nicole Orsua, chief industry development officer for Nevada Division of Tourism, also known as Travel Nevada. “Our mission is to increase and improve the quality of life for Nevadans and our rural communities by helping stimulate their tourism economics, which can then help stimulate their local economies.”
The grant was given during Covid, but it is now transforming how the state is marketing itself.
“Pre-Covid, the mantra for so many years was to get heads in beds,” Orsua said. “But Covid was a big jolt to the industry and its partners, and that’s when they started to really refocus on capacity and resilience.”
New Emphasis on Communities
In 2022, the group created a new Destination Development Program that set out a 10-year plan for how the money will be spent. Last summer, it issued grants to three communities:
White Pine County : The gateway to the Great Basin National Park. It has some of America’s oldest trees and darkest skies. People go hiking, stargazing, and mountain biking.
Lincoln County : It is looking to build up its outdoor camping and market itself as a place for themed astrological tours and extraterrestrial tours, cowboy culture, and hot springs.
Black Rock-High Rock : This is home to Burning Man.
It’s still too early to measure the success of the grants, but the program is in the process of giving the rest of the money to a second cohort of three communities this year.
Marketing Experiences
One of the main challenges in the past has been making this kind of travel bookable. Travel Nevada is in talks with GetYourGuide, an online travel agency, to help market the experiences.
“We are always exploring conversations with innovation-minded DMOs like Nevada to drive visibility across different parts of their state, and not just the gateways,” said Anna Cashman, B2B brand and industry insights lead at GetYourGuide.
The project showcases GetYourGuide’s stated mission to work with local governments to make tourism beneficial rather than harmful.
The project has global relevance. Many third-tier markets with niche offerings are looking to draw more tourism, and many are landing on travel experiences.
A case in point: GetYourGuide also partnered with San Antonio, Texas, to make the city more appealing to international markets by focusing on tours, sports, and activities.
But this approach can also work to quell overcrowding, which is becoming a more urgent issue in popular spots. In California, GetYourGuide has helped with a campaign to showcase all the things people can do in the state besides visiting the major attractions.
In Kyoto, Japan, which has a number of popular tourist attractions, the company developed experiences that bring tourists to lesser-known spots and spread out the visits to the heritage sites at off-peak hours.
Other companies have worked with destinations to help distribute tourist dollars across points of interest rather than concentrate them in the best-known and most Instagrammed locations. Japanese hotel group Hoshino Resorts has been building hotels elsewhere than Tokyo and Kyoto to encourage tourist dispersal, tour operator Intrepid Travel has promoted some tour offerings off-the-beaten-path , and travel agency TravelStore has guided customers to consider alternative vacation spots .
Orsua that they want to support the tourism that towns have the capacity to handle. “That’s our residents’ home,” she said. “This is about creating harmony between our communities and the tourists.”
Correction: This article has been updated to reflect that GetYourGuide’s partnerships with several destinations are not ongoing.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel recently completed the fifth year of banding migratory birds on the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge as part of a project to assess the overall status of birds that migrate to southern Nevada to breed and their use of habitat on and adjacent to the refuge. The banding effort at the Moapa Valley NWR is part of a long-term, continent-wide banding project called MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship), which is managed by the Institute for Bird Populations. This is the only MAPS banding station currently operating in Nevada. Over the five years of banding at the refuge, the Service was assisted by volunteers from groups such as the Red Rock Audubon Society, along with staff from the Nevada Department of Wildlife and Southern Nevada Water Authority.
From 2018 to 2022, the team banded 390 migratory birds representing 47 different species at the banding station on the wildlife refuge. Captured birds are given a lightweight, numbered aluminum leg band and released unharmed. The banding was conducted targeting breeding birds and was typically done from the middle of May until early August. The operators of the banding station collect information on the age, gender, body condition, and reproductive status of the birds. The data collected can be used to estimate key demographic parameters - also known as vital rates - like reproductive rates, survival of individual bird species, and movement patterns.
“The Moapa Valley NWR bands more Abert’s towhees than anywhere else in the country,” said refuge manager Rob Vinson. “We also banded the first cactus wren ever banded in Nevada.”
Banded birds do return to the refuge and are recaptured. For instance, a brown-crested flycatcher that was captured and banded in 2018 was recaptured this year. Other species banded at the station include Lucy’s warbler and phainopepla (silky flycatcher).
All the data collected over the five years is sent to the Institute for Bird Populations in California, which manages the MAPS banding efforts. This data is then accessible for researchers to assess while conducting various research projects on migratory birds. The bands used are supplied by the Bird Banding Laboratory operated by the U.S. Geologic Survey on the Service’s Patuxent Research Refuge in Maryland, and applied by a permitted bird bander.

A Phoenix team had its wheelchairs damaged after a flight. The airline's response? A $150 travel voucher
Members of a Phoenix-based wheelchair basketball team are speaking out after a pattern of what they consider their "freedom," their "livelihood," and their "legs" be treated as an inconvenience.
Players of the Ability360 Wheelchair Suns said they were stuck on a Southwest Airlines plane for more than two hours without their wheelchairs after they took a flight earlier this month from Phoenix to Richmond for the National Wheelchair Basketball Championships.
The problems continued off the plane.
"We watched our chairs come off of the conveyor belt off of the plane and we watched them fall off the conveyor belt onto the ground. Just chair, after chair, after chair," said Justin Walker, a player for the Wheelchair Suns.
Airport workers mishandling and damaging the wheelchairs, delays to travel and apologetic travel vouchers seem to be par for the course, team members told The Arizona Republic.
The experience is not unique to the Wheelchair Suns. Thousand of mobility device damage incidents are reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation a month.
'It's sickening, to be honest with you'
The team communicated with Southwest six months before the April 10 flight, according to Walker. There were three teams on the flight and each player would be traveling with both a sport wheelchair and an everyday chair. The return flight was scheduled for April 14.
On both the departing and returning flights, team members said they experienced long delays to get off the plane and incorrect storage of their wheelchairs that led to damage.
Walker said the airline should have known what accommodations they needed to make.
Despite that they had been in contact with the airline for half a year, not enough employees were there to help reassemble the wheelchairs they had deconstructed, he said.
"It's just sickening, to be honest with you," Walker said. "It's sickening because we know we're an inconvenience when we have two chairs, we know that. That's why we try to communicate with them as much as possible to allow the situation to be as seamless as possible."
Myranda Shields, social media manager for the Wheelchair Suns, said it wasn't like losing bags, luggage or medication. Wheelchairs serve as legs.
"It's not luggage and that is the problem, they don't look at it like, I've got 300 devices people need to live and then 200 bags under there," Shields said. "They look at it like, oh, I've got 500 bags."
In response to the incident, Southwest sent out an email to the NWBA and the coaches, but they have not reached out to the people who were on the plane, according to Walker.
In an email obtained by The Republic, the airline claimed they had been in communication with the cities involved for "well over a month" and failed on its end for "several" of the people on board.
The airline stated in the email it did not communicate with many of the people and their teams about whether it could take the wheels off the chairs, and the intent was to create more space for all baggage by removing the wheels.
For the flight home, the airline said it did not want to disappoint the team on their travel home and asked to zip tie the wheels together with nametags. It also stated it would give players the option of taking their sports chairs to the gate so the wheels could be removed there. The email acknowledged the team would be flying on a "smaller" Boeing 737-700 aircraft, which had a "smaller cargo hold area."
In a statement to The Republic, Southwest said it apologized if it had not met customer care expectations.
"We have reviewed the situation and addressed it with the appropriate parties so we are able to provide a better experience for our Customers the next time they fly with Southwest," the statement read. "We have a long history of caring for our Customers and apologize any time we don’t meet those expectations."
Walker said they were given a $150 travel voucher in an attempt to compensate for the mistreatment.
"It's a voucher to a place that's already mistreated us. Cool," Walker said. "What is $150 going to get us? Nothing. So, when our stuff is falling down and we're watching our legs, our livelihood, our freedom fall on the ground like no one cares. ... I know about disabled rights. I know if I give you my device, you are obligated by law to bring that chair back to me the way I gave it to you."
According to the Air Carrier Access Act, if an airline damages someone's wheelchair, they are completely liable, regardless of the cost.
Shields said they have not filed an official complaint because she has done it many times in the past. The Republic obtained emails confirming that on at least five occasions, the airline sent vouchers to Shields and Walker for bad experiences she said were "I'm sorry vouchers."
Now, she is taking a different approach and speaking out.
"This is a systemic problem with the airline industry and how they treat people in wheelchairs," Shields said.
"It's unreasonable to expect us to live like this whenever we want to travel and it's also unreasonable to expect us to not travel, not do the things we love to do that we are able to do, because we are in wheelchairs."
Laws are aimed to protect people with disabilities. But is it enough?
The Americans with Disabilities Act was established in 1990 to prohibit discrimination based on disabilities.
The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to provide assistance to people with disabilities when traveling by air, including with loading and stowing of assistive devices. In response to incidents like what the Wheelchair Suns faced, the U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing a rule to strengthen implementation of the act.
According to the Department of Transportation, airlines "mishandle" on average about 1.5% of the mobility devices they transport.
In 2022, airlines carried 741,582 wheelchairs and scooters, and there were 11,389 incidents reported to the DOT. That's an increase from 2021, when carriers transported 553,969 mobility devices and 7,239 incidents were reported, according to USA TODAY.
In the new proposal unveiled by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in February, the definition of "mishandled" devices would specify that any mishandling of wheelchairs and assistive devices by airlines is a violation that is subject to penalty. If an airline does mishandle an assistive device, they would have to immediately notify the impacted passenger of their rights.
The passenger could then file a claim with the airline, receive a loaner wheelchair or scooter with certain customizations. If necessary, the passenger would have access to a complaints resolution official and to choose a preferred vendor for device repairs or replacement.
The proposal is undergoing public comment period through May 13. Many of those comments echoed a familiar sentiment:
"I am appalled by the rampant disregard that airline employees have displayed when handling passengers' wheelchairs."
"Airlines need to be held to account for this by training and retraining staff from baggage handlers to flight attendants."
"When wheelchairs are damaged or delayed, lives are upended due to missed connections, missed experiences, missed employment, and even injuries due to inadequate loaner wheelchairs."
Players watch wheelchairs be mishandled, fall off conveyor belt
After the team got off the plane, Walker said they started to notice their tires and rims were broken.
As they were sitting down at the carousel, a message came over the loudspeaker that said there was an inconvenience with the bags on the flight because of the wheelchairs and 30 bags were left in Denver because of it.
"Now we have every person that was on that flight that was already pissed off because we were late getting there," Walker said. "Now they're pissed off looking at us."
Walker said the airline only escalated the situation and when trusted to take care of the passengers' livelihoods, they did not.
When the team flew home to Phoenix, the airline said they would zip-tie and tag the wheels so the process would flow. The wheels were zip-tied, but during their layover in Chicago, the ground crew cut the zip ties, according to a social media post Walker and Shields posted to Instagram. Players then watched as their wheelchairs fell from the conveyor belt.
On the way back, the team needed an hour and a half to get off the plane so they could match the wheels to the chairs. Chairs and axles were broken. According to Walker, everyday wheelchairs cost between $5,000 and $8,000, and basketball wheelchairs between $8,000 and $12,000.
Walker said they were told it was an inconvenience for them to bring their chairs and that they would instead be put in a standard wheelchair, typically provided by airports and hospitals.
"For you to ask me to use somebody else's wheelchair that I don't know, that is honestly like asking you to use somebody else's underwear," Walker said. "We don't know if it's been clean, we don't know what's been happening in that chair, we don't know where it came from."
Players call for 'serious' policy changes
Speaking out about the experience has been part of the team members' way to share their story and their voices, they said.
"That's why we're doing what we're doing right now is because it needs to change," Shields said. "I don't need to be crying in the airport on the way to a national tournament because I've got all these angry strangers coming over and poking at me."
Shields said the airline needs serious policy changes regarding wheelchair storage. She said she would like to be able to remove the wheels herself, attach them to the chairs and make sure they are properly tagged.
She also suggested the airline pick a bigger plane to better accompany everyone and train their staff so they know the difference between an everyday wheelchair and a sports wheelchair.
Christopher Rodriguez, Ability360's CEO, got into disability advocacy work because of his older brother TJ — who has significant intellectual and developmental disabilities.
He said he has spent his career trying to assist in breaking down barriers for those with disabilities.
Ability360 is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Through its comprehensive programs, Ability360 touches the lives of individuals with disabilities throughout Arizona and addresses the disability concerns of their family members, co-workers and employers, according to its website.
Ability360 has three adult wheelchair basketball teams that compete in Division II, Division III and the Women’s Division in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.
"It's heartbreaking to hear about these stories and to understand how frequent they are, despite the fact that our paramount piece of legislation and law that put forth the rights to accessibility, the ADA, was passed over 25 years ago," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said the Southwest incident was disappointing and a horrible situation to put the athletes in.
Education needs to occur so both the workers at the airport and airline employees know the needs of individuals with disabilities and are aware of the challenges they may face, he said.
"If they fully appreciated or understood that a person's wheelchair is literally an extension of their body, perhaps they would have been more sensitive to the situation, but unfortunately, that did not seem to be the case," Rodriguez said.
After placing sixth in the tournament, the D2 Phoenix Suns season came to an end. While the men will not be playing again until next fall, travel will continue.
Shields said she is weary of traveling again but was hopeful that her next flight, which was scheduled for Wednesday, would not be as bad.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — James Karinchak was spotted in the Guardians clubhouse ahead of Thursday’s series finale against Boston at Progressive Field. The right-hander has been on the 60-day injured list since March 28 as he continues to recover from shoulder soreness that he experienced in spring training.
Manager Stephen Vogt said Karinchak will travel during the upcoming six-game road trip to Atlanta and Houston under the watchful eye of Guardians trainers and coaches.
“It’s a good time for our pitching guys to get their eyes on him,” Vogt said. “He’s getting closer to getting to the mound, so we just thought it would be a good time for him to come get with the guys, mix in with them. Also, just a chance for our trainers and pitching coaches to get their hands on him and see where he is at.”
Karinchak has progressed to throwing at 250 feet and is continuing to build toward a return to the mound, Vogt told reporters Tuesday. He is not eligible to come off the injured list until May 30, but will likely need several rehab appearances in minor league games before then.
Karinchak split last season between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus, spending three extended stints on the major league roster. He finished with a 3.23 ERA in 39 innings across 44 appearances. Karinchack was 2-4 with a 3.90 ERA through 32 outings before he was optioned on June 10.
In his August and September stints with the Guardians, Karinchak made 10 scoreless appearances in 12 outings and posted a 1.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Karinchak’s walk numbers climbed in 2023 as he pitched to a 6.46 walks per nine innings and a career-low strikeout to walk ratio of 1.86. Still, the righty held opposing hitters to a .178 batting average and had the third-lowest opponent average among MLB relievers from 2019 to 2013 behind Devin Williams and Josh Hader.

Zurich Classic Betting Preview: Odds, Prediction, Long Shot Bet, Team to Fade and Outright Winner Pick
- Author: Brian Giuffra
In this story:
The only PGA Tour team event of the season (think laidback Ryder Cup vibes) is here and it’s chock-full of powerhouse tandems to consider betting on.
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, Xander Schauffle and Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala headline the field this week, but we're not betting on them, choosing instead to focus on a team of brothers.
Before betting, it’s important to remember this is a unique format. There are two days of fourball, known as best-ball, played in Rounds 1 and 3 and two rounds of foursomes, known as alternate shots, in Rounds 2 and 4.
Last year’s winning team of Davis Riley and Nick Hardy shot 30 under for the week, so we must pick duos who can go low in each format.
Who are they? Let’s break it down starting with the Top 10 teams in odds, which come from DraftKings Sportsbook, followed by our longshot pick, the team to fade and outright winner.
Zurich Classic Odds
Patrick Cantlay / Xander Schauffele +400
Rory McIlroy / Shane Lowry +700
Will Zalatoris / Sahith Theegala +800
Collin Morikawa / Kurt Kitayama +1200
Rasmus Højgaard / Nicolai Højgaard +2200
Tom Hoge / Maverick McNealy +2500
Matt Fitzpatrick / Alex Fitzpatrick +2500
Taylor Pendrith / Corey Conners +2800
Nick Taylor / Adam Hadwin +3000
Sepp Straka / Brice Garnett +4000
Keith Mitchell / Joel Dahmen +4000
Doug Ghim / Chan Kim +4000
Billy Horschel / Tyson Alexander +4000
Zurich Classic Long Shot Pick: Billy Horschel / Tyson Alexander +4000
There’s no shortage of star power atop the leaderboard, but a team capable of competing this week that’s flying under the radar is Billy Horschel and Tyson Alexander at +4000 odds.
Horschel just won the Puntacana Championship with a 23-under total highlighted by a 63 on Sunday. He’s always been a streaky player and I’m counting on his hot streak continuing at an event he’s had success at before.
Horschel won this event when it was played as an individual tournament and won it another time as a team. He’s placed second twice and tied for fourth once here. Last year, he placed 11th with Sam Burns.
Alexander is not as well known and doesn’t have as strong of a history at the Zurich, but he’s off to a good start this season (has made three straight cuts) and had his best start of the season three weeks ago at the Texas Open. He's also 49th on tour in shots-gained: putting, an important stat this week, especially in alternate shot.
Winning back-to-back events is tough, but Horschel’s hot and he wouldn’t have picked Alexander as his teammate in an event he has a history of success at if he didn’t think they could win.
Zurich Classic Team to Fade: Rasmus Højgaard / Nicolai Højgaard +2200
Nicolai Højgaard was leading the Masters outright Saturday afternoon before a disastrous back nine 40 ended his chances of winning. He followed that up with a 4-over 76 on Sunday and just missed the cut at the Puntacana Championship.
Overall, he’s missed three cuts in his last five events and was T-75 in another with a +5 total score. His run at Augusta seems more an apparition when taking a macro view of his recent form.
Nicolai is playing with his twin brother, Rasmus, who withdrew from the Indian Open after an opening-round 79. Rasmus does have three Top 10s on the DP World Tour this season, but the most recent one came in February.
Recent results suggest both brother’s forms are regressing heading into this one. While being together could lighten the mood and improve their play, the +2200 odds are not good enough to warrant a bet.
Zurich Classic Pick to Win: Matt Fitzpatrick / Alex Fitzpatrick +2500
After fading one brother duo, why not back another, huh?
Matt Fitzpatrick is ranked ninth in total driving on the PGA Tour, 26th in total putting, 15th in birdie average per round and 11th in birdie percentage on Par 5s. He finished fifth at the Players and 10th at the Texas Open, was in contention at the Masters early and just shot four rounds under par at the RBC Heritage.
Alex finished T23 at the Corales last week with four rounds under par including a Sunday 67. He missed the cut at the Indian Open at the end of March, but has been steady on the DP World Tour this season, with six Top 20s in nine events. Like his brother, Alex is a solid driver and strong putter.
Last year, the Fitzpatricks finished T-19 at the Zurich, with two rounds of 62 during fourball and rounds of 71 and 74 in alternate shot. If they can make up some strokes in the latter format, they’ll be in contention this week, because both make a ton of birdies off their own ball.
