HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M60
As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M60 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.
We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.
Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.
The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!
We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M60 will be reinstated shortly.
If the images are not updating, please check back later.

East boston’s sumner tunnel vulnerable to trucks getting stuck during $160m project.
State transportation officials are warning drivers of oversized trucks to find alternate routes so they don’t become the next transport rig stuck in the busy Sumner Tunnel.
An increasing number of trucks are finding problems while navigating through the Sumner over the past month despite a $160-million project that has closed the tunnel periodically since April 2022, including last summer’s eight-week long shutdown.
A tractor trailer that entered the tunnel early Thursday morning got trapped while trying to pass through, causing backups and gridlock on the streets of East Boston. The incident is the latest in a recent series of tunnel jams.
Highway crews with the state Department of Transportation are working to implement variable-message signs ahead of the Sumner which will “broadcast alternate routes to truckers looking to access I-93 northbound and southbound,” a department spokesman told the Herald Saturday.
“Additionally, new low clearance signage will be posted ahead of entrance portals, and chains will be retrofitted on existing signs to warn drivers of the tunnel clearance,” the spokesman added.
State Rep. Adrian Madaro, from Eastie, is calling for more action to be taken so truck drivers can stop “storrowing” in the Sumner. Getting storrowed has long been a motto in Greater Boston for when a truck hits a low bridge or overpass on Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road in Boston and Memorial Drive in Cambridge.
In an post on X Thursday, Madaro said MassDOT has told him that it plans to investigate “how mobile wayfinding apps, like Waze or Google Maps, can help truck drivers make better navigation decisions.”
“I’m also advocating for the state to consider all possible options to hold drivers accountable for continually ignoring height warnings,” he added. “It is abundantly clear that the current system is not working.”
A driver of an oversized truck on March 26 ignored the clearance signage indicating that vehicles must be no higher than than 12 feet 6 inches in order to get through the tunnel smoothly. Video showed the truck’s roof scraping along the top of the tunnel that shot debris down to the roadway and forced drivers to take “evasive action,” WCVB reported.
A similar scene unfolded on April 5.
Last summer’s work included MassDOT installing massive arches that aimed to strengthen the structure’s worn out ceiling and enhance its ventilation. Work also included removing nearly 4,000 linear feet of ceiling panels and upgrading the lighting, communications and life safety systems of the tunnel.
This summer’s work will focus on replacing two inches of road with new concrete and asphalt, shuttering the tunnel in July and August, mirroring last year’s schedule.
Once fully complete, officials have said they don’t anticipate the tunnel needing another major rehab for at least the next 50 years.
State Sen. Lydia Edwards, representing Eastie, said she’s been in contact with Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt “to urge implementation of signage, starting at the Starbucks location on Route 1A in Orient Heights, through the Airport ramps, to warn all drivers and avoid further traffic jams that impeded travel.”
“East Boston drivers have only two ways into Downtown Boston: the Sumner and the Ted Williams Tunnels,” she said in a post on X. “I am aware that in April, several trucks have become stuck in the Sumner Tunnel due to its low ceilings and to a lack of signage warning truck drivers to only drive through the Ted Williams Tunnel.”

The following traffic incidents and congestion for M62 have been reported by Highways England, Traffic Scotland, Traffic Wales or Transport for London (TfL) in the last two hours:
M62 Roadworks
The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.
The M62 motorway is a major eastwest transportation route through Northern England, connecting Liverpool, Manchester and Hull. It starts at the junction of the M60 and the M62 near Manchester, and terminates at Clifton, near Brighouse in West Yorkshire. It was built between 1964 and 1976.
Safety on the M62 has historically been a concern, with the road having a higher than average number of fatalities and serious injuries. In 2004, the Highways Agency set up a safety scheme on the M62 known as Operation Edgeware, which resulted in a reduction of fatalities and serious injury accidents by around 50%.
In recent years the M62 has seen several improvements in safety, including the introduction of dedicated hard shoulder running systems and an Automated Incident Detection System. In the 2016/17 financial year statistics indicate that the road saw a total of 408 accidents resulting in personal injury, of which 43 resulted in fatalities.

Tested: 2024 BMW X5 M60i Balances Performance and Comfort Nicely
The X5 M60i provides power and poise while remaining compliant and practical enough for daily driving.
In these times of cylinder downsizing, there's comfort to be found under the X5 M60i's hood. The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 hiding in there produces a meaty 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, which in our testing was enough to shove this 5360-pound SUV to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. That puts it three-tenths ahead of the latest Porsche Cayenne S Coupe , which also rocks a V-8 (albeit one that makes just 468 ponies) and boasts a curb weight advantage of about 250 pounds. The BMW's still that far ahead at the quarter-mile mark, as well, which it reaches in 12.1 seconds at 113 mph.
But stoplight drags only cover a part of what makes the X5 M60i's powertrain so rewarding. Combined with a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, there's never a bad spot in the rev range; even though we found some response delay in our 4.7-second run between five and 60 mph, the X5 still outperformed the Cayenne S Coupe in all three of our passing tests. In commuting situations, it means the only thing standing between a late departure and an early arrival at the office is your tolerance for scofflaw behavior. And, again, the engine practically begs to push the envelope at any opportunity.
.css-1rvrtxn{font-family:Gliko,Gliko-fallback,Gliko-roboto,Gliko-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;text-decoration-color:#DBCA8B;text-decoration-thickness:0.25rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 48rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:2.625rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:3rem;line-height:1.1;}}.css-1rvrtxn b,.css-1rvrtxn strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1rvrtxn em,.css-1rvrtxn i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;} HIGHS: Effortless V-8 power, cushy accommodations, more supple than the X5 M.
Thankfully, braking is equally strong, with stops from 70 mph taking 157 feet and from 100 mph needing 325 feet. Here, the Cayenne S Coupe has the Bimmer beat, but not by much, and that's to be expected given the mass delta. Fuel economy exceeds expectations, with the X5 achieving 24 mpg on our 75-mph highway test loop, 2 mpg higher than the EPA highway estimate.
The X5 M may still be the track star of the family, but the M60i has some pretty good moves around town. Handling is as flat as any other performance-oriented BMW, but the steering's quickness might catch a driver off guard, especially if their second vehicle is something a bit lazier; it's easy to dial in a bit too much angle and point the nose more severely than desired.
LOWS: Twitchy steering around town, too few physical buttons, disappointing skidpad results.
However, the X5's commuting athletics don't really translate to the skidpad, where we recorded an underwhelming 0.86 g and a wave of excessive understeer that stands in stark contrast to the Cayenne S. Perhaps it's alignment, perhaps there's something else afoot with the X5's combination of big wheels—22 inches, in our test car's case—and Pirelli P Zero PZ4 summer tires (275/35R-22 front, 315/30R-22 rear). But either way, disappointing skidpad results are a trend we've noticed on several X5s over the last few years.
Despite those Italian rubber-band tires, the X5 exhibits a surprisingly comfortable ride in daily driving. There's a hint of stiffness making its way through the electronically controlled dampers that make up the standard Adaptive M Suspension, but the manifold road imperfections around our Ann Arbor office never rise to the level of bothersome. Moving through the drive modes will bring more of that feel to the driver, but we think everything is best left in its default Comfort setting; there's still plenty of fun to be had within those limits.
Even if your passengers aren't wowed by the M60i's performance chops, they'll dig the interior. The seats are comfortable, and every single inch of real estate looks and feels like the near-six-figure (for starters) cabin that this is. BMW refreshed the X5 for 2024, but some unfortunate vestiges remain—namely gesture control, which is frustrating to use intentionally and easy to activate accidentally.
The biggest cabin update is that the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster combines with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen in one giant curved installation rising from the dashboard. We love the latest iteration of iDrive, which is info-dense but easy to learn over time, but we dislike that nearly all climate functions require a trip through on-screen menus. The wireless device charger, which is tucked inside the center console behind a sliding lid, could use some additional ventilation, we think; your author's phone heat-bricked itself in there while running wireless Apple CarPlay. Thankfully, time in the open air hooked up to a nearby USB-C port allowed us to juice up while keeping the volume up.
VERDICT: Skip the X5 M's hefty price premium and put that cash toward your tire budget.
As with most German luxo-tanks, the BMW X5 M60i is an expensive proposition even before its countless potential options are factored in. Starting at $90,295, our test car picked up frivolities like a $5000 British Racing Green paint job, a $1950 upcharge for fancier Merino leather, and $1900 for the larger 22-inch wheels. Throw another five packages into the mix that add things like surround-view cameras, four-zone climate control, and the aforementioned cursed gesture control, and we're choking down a $105,745 pill. That's still a far cry from the X5 M's $123,295 pre-options price, so if you're willing to forgo the 617-hp V-8, you can save a fair bit of scratch by sticking with the M60i, which still delivers impressive street performance with fewer comfort-related drawbacks.

U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos
An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.
Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.
The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.
"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.
"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.
The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.
Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."
The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.
"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.
The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.
The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.
It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."
The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."
The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.
Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.
"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.
"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.
Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.
His case goes to trial May 3.

A Delta Boeing 767 made an emergency landing after its exit slide fell off in midair
- A Delta flight from NYC to LA had to turn back after its emergency exit slide detached.
- The Boeing 767 landed safely at JFK about an hour after taking off.
- It is the latest in a string of safety mishaps to befall the airline industry in recent months.
A Boeing plane was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday after an emergency slide fell off the aircraft.
Delta Air Lines flight 520 from New York's JFK airport aborted its trip to LA on Friday and landed back where it started.
It touched down again at around 8:30 a.m., just an hour into its journey, according to the tracking site Flightradar24 .
A Delta spokesperson told Business Insider that the flight crew had been alerted by a "flight deck indication related to the right wing emergency exit slide, as well as a non-routine sound from near the right wing."
"After the aircraft had safely landed and proceeded to a gate, it was observed that the emergency slide had separated from the aircraft," the spokesperson said.
The airline didn't offer any detail on when, how, or why the slide detached — or where it ended up.

No injuries were reported aboard the aircraft, which had been carrying 176 customers, two pilots, and five flight attendants.
In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said : "Delta Air Lines Flight 520 returned safely to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York around 8:35 a.m. local time on Friday, April 26, after the crew reported a vibration."
"The FAA will investigate," it added.
Delta said it had removed the plane in question from service.
The aircraft was a version of the Boeing 767 and was manufactured in 1990.
According to Flexport , a global logistics workflow company, an aircraft is generally operable for around 30 years before it needs to be retired.
In 2019, an evacuation slide from a Delta flight fell into a man's yard in Massachusetts, CNN reported at the time.
Delta is not the only airline to have experienced such an issue, however.
In 2023, a slide from a United Airlines-operated plane landed in a backyard near Chicago O'Hare Airport.
The FAA said maintenance workers at the airport found an emergency slide was missing on a United Boeing 767 that had landed safely from Switzerland, ABC7 Chicago reported.

Delays in renewing work permits causing problems in Cork, say Indian nurses
Immigration specialist warns ending of visa-free travel for skilled workers from south africa will impact on irish companies.

Growing delays to the renewals of residence permits required by those who come here to live from outside the European Union (EU) are causing considerable problems for thousands of workers and their families in Cork City, according to a group representing Indian nurses in the region.
The group says about 9,000 non-EU citizens are working in the area but delays of between four to six months for the appointments required for renewals are preventing people taking up or changing jobs and hampering family reunification efforts and citizenship applications as well as hindering those who want to travel, sometimes for family emergencies.
They want to see the online renewals system they say has been successfully rolled out in the Dublin region extended to Cork City, or greater flexibility shown with regard to the centres where appointments are scheduled as much of the wider region is unaffected by the delays.
“The problem is that there is only one centre in Cork City and so there the backlog is massive,” said Janet Baby Joseph, president of the Cork Indian Nurses association.

“We have approached local TDs who have said they will raise the issue in the Dáil but extending the online system used in Dublin and allowing people to have their appointments outside of the city could help start to address the situation very quickly,” she says.
Renewals in the Dublin area are handled by the Immigration Service while those in the rest of the country are overseen by An Garda Síochána, who were approached for comment.
Separately, an immigration specialist at Dublin-based law firm Lewis Silkin says any move to introduce visa requirements for those travelling from South Africa to work in Ireland will have a significant impact on companies who have ramped up recruitment there in recent years.
Just 3 per cent of work permits granted to people coming from outside the EU in the opening months of this year, 326 out of 9,832, went to South Africans but the country has become a source of particular skills that are in short supply in the Irish construction and infrastructure sectors.
[ Visa-free travel from South Africa may end under immigration plan ]
The Cabinet, however, is to discuss ending visa-free travel from South Africa three years after it was reintroduced as it is believed people from other countries, including Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have been using South African passports to sidestep immigration requirements.
“The process at the moment of obtaining the permits required for South Africans to come and work here takes about 10 weeks on average but if you add visa requirements to that it could take an additional eight weeks. There might be additional support required and so it all becomes a more onerous task and a less attractive one for companies who need these skills and have invested in their efforts to hire South African nationals,” says Declan Groarke, senior associate at Lewis Silkin.
“These are skilled people like engineers and electrical engineers and there is a traditional labour market shortage that needs to be filled. The Department of Enterprise is working to try to address that market shortage but this could actually work against us in many ways,” he says.
