Whether you're a frequent flier or an occasional jet-setter, you'll always be glad to have sturdy, dependable luggage that safeguards your belongings. With a rigid frame, the hardside variety helps prevent things from breaking or crushing. It can also be easier to wipe clean than a softside design and has a sleek, modern appeal.

If you want the crème de la crème of hardside suitcases, you've come to the right place. But what makes a top-notch model? Besides a high-strength exterior that protects your stuff and withstands wear and tear, it's about maneuverability, capacity, standout features, and, yes, style.

The Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including checked bags and carry-ons, to see which ones stack up. During our various luggage tests, we pack the suitcases with clothes, shoes, and toiletries to see how spacious they are; spin them through obstacle courses to test the wheels and handles; and give them a few good whacks with a baseball bat to check durability. We also recreated an airplane set in our lab to lift carry-on suitcases into overhead bins, place them underneath seats, and roll them down carpeted aisles to see how portable and lightweight they are. These are our favorite hardside suitcases.

Best Overall

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Earning perfect scores across the board, this standout suitcase is compact yet spacious, with a high-strength thermoplastic shell and smooth-gliding wheels.

It doesn't have a laundry bag or any smart features.

We tried dozens of suitcases, and while many are worth considering, the Freeform Spinner was an all-around favorite. Earning perfect ratings in every testing category, this hardside carry-on is lightweight and compact but also spacious enough to fit everything you need for a four-day getaway. It expands if you need extra wiggle room, though we were able to pack everything on our packing test list without this feature. While there are multiple pockets in the main compartment and a separator for dirty shoes, we wish it had a removable laundry bag.

We're big fans of the minimalist-modern design, which is available in more than 12 colors ranging from sage to lilac to everyday neutrals. After smacking the Freeform Spinner with a bat during testing, the polycarbonate (high-strength thermoplastic) exterior was free of scuffs, scratches, and dents. We wouldn't worry about spilling a drink on it or accidentally dragging it through a puddle either.

This suitcase is a breeze to maneuver on two wheels or four, and it glides smoothly on both hard floors and carpets. The expandable, lockable aluminum handle feels sturdy, too. Considering the accessible price point, reliable construction, and smooth-rolling wheels, we'd recommend Samsonite’s Freeform Spinner to frequent fliers and anyone in the market for a durable carry-on.

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

This affordable carry-on is lightweight yet sturdy, with a scratch-resistant exterior and an unexpectedly spacious capacity.

There are limited color options, and it doesn't have any smart features or a TSA lock.

For something a little easier on your wallet, look no further than Amazon. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner has an extra-thick thermoplastic shell that promises to protect your belongings and resist scratches. We're pleased to report it showed no signs of damage from our bat hits and drop tests. It's easy to maneuver, even on carpeted flooring and over bumps.

We could fit every last item on our packing list, including shoes, clothes, jackets, and toiletries. There's also an expander that increases the capacity by 15 percent. This wasn't necessary for our test, but we appreciate that there's room to spare. Although this affordable carry-on suitcase doesn't have smart features or a TSA lock, it really exceeded our expectations. We'd love a few more color options but like the pared-down appearance.

Best Built-in Compression

Away the carry-on flex.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

This compact bag holds a lot thanks to its compression straps, zippers, and an expansion feature.

The flex feature adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, but it also makes the bag too large to qualify as a carry-on.

This Away bag has a surprising amount of space for a carry-on, with two large interior compartments (one on each side), compression straps, and dividers that keep your clothing from falling out when you open the bag (everything stayed in place even after we threw the bag multiple times off a table). While we were packing the bag during our lab tests, we loved how all of the interior zippers and pockets helped keep everything organized, allowing us to maximize space even without packing cubes. There is also a handy zipper expansion that adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, which is useful, but it does make the bag too large to use as a carry-on, and you’ll be forced to check it. Even when packed full, the zippers all ran smoothly, and we found it easy to maneuver the luggage over concrete tiles, carpet, and around our obstacle course full of bystanders. The wheels rotated smoothly throughout testing, and the bag will even roll on its own without getting stuck if you give it a shove.

The Details: 8.15 pounds | 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches | 39.8-liter capacity; 46.7-liter capacity when expanded | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Carry-on

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 21-inch spinner.

The Chatelet Air 2.0 is super functional and durable — plus, it's a sight for sore eyes.

Since it's not expandable, it's best for short trips or strategic packers.

Delsey's Chatelet Air 2.0 is our favorite hardside carry-on. The compact yet spacious design features a zippered compartment on one side and compression straps on the other. While it doesn't expand, you can fit a decent amount of stuff inside and have peace of mind knowing everything will stay in place. We also like that there are multiple interior pockets and a USB port you can hook up to a portable charger .

Even when packed full, the zippers open and close smoothly. And the four dual-spinner wheels glide effortlessly across hard flooring, carpet, and even stone pavers. This suitcase also passed our durability test with flying colors, sustaining no visible damage when we hit it with a bat and shoved it off a table. During three months of travels, we even checked this carry-on for two different international flights and it still looks perfect after just a bit of cleaning.

The Details: 7.74 pounds | 22.75 x 15 x 10 inches | 44-liter capacity | Smart | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Checked

Samsonite winfield 2 hardside.

The Winfield 2 seems nearly impossible to damage, plus it's spacious and super easy to maneuver on various surfaces — even gravel.

It doesn't have any smart features and weighs 11.5 pounds when empty.

If you're in the market for checked luggage , the Samsonite Winfield 2 might be your best bet. The polycarbonate shell took our hits, shoves, and drops like a pro, looking just as glossy and scratch-free after the test as when we pulled it out of the packaging. We're big fans of the expandable design; compression system; and zippered divider, which you can use to separate your shoes or clean and dirty clothes. Even when stuffed full, this hardside suitcase maintained its shape and size.

The Winfield 2 was easy to maneuver on two or four wheels and even performed well on carpet and gravel. The handles will also come in handy when grabbing it from baggage claim or lifting it into a car. All things considered, this no-nonsense spinner bag is an excellent choice for overpackers and international trips .

The Details: 11.5 pounds | 31.5 x 20.5 x 13 inches | Expandable | 4 wheels

Best Lightweight Carry-on

Samsonite omni pc carry-on.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.8 /5

The Samsonite Omni PC is just over six pounds, with an expandable capacity and a rigid exterior that won't dent or scratch.

The wheels can get caught in ruts, and it rolls a little better on two wheels than on four.

This lightweight carry-on weighed in at just 6.1 pounds and fit snugly into an overhead compartment. The dual compartments, pockets, and cross straps make it easy to pack and organize your stuff. There's also an expander if you need extra space. After whacking it with a bat, we can confirm its scratch-resistant, dent-defying durability.

This suitcase rolls smoothly and turns on a dime. And stuffing it full doesn't seem to make it any harder to maneuver. Having said that, the small wheels sometimes get stuck in grooves, and it's not as easy to push as most spinners. Still, we think the price is sharp and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to overpackers, frequent fliers, and anyone who doesn't want to worry about premature wear and tear.

The Details: 6.1 pounds | 22 x 15 x 9.5 inches | Expandable | 4 wheels

Best Lightweight Checked

July checked plus light.

This 105-liter suitcase holds a ton while weighing in at under 10 pounds, so it won’t add unnecessary bulk.

The luggage is not expandable.

Hardside bags can get heavy quickly, so we always appreciate when we can find a checked hardside that weighs under 10 pounds. The July Checked Plus Light feels very lightweight for its size and features a curved eggshell design that maximizes space and keeps it durable. Even though this bag is large, it felt slimmer and more compact than some Away checked bags we tested because of the shape while still feeling spacious inside with a generous 105-liter capacity. We also liked how the interior pockets and straps helped keep things in place so smaller items don’t get lost in the larger bag. This suitcase did not dent at all after we hit it several times with a baseball bat during testing, and this particular style of July luggage did not scuff as much as some of the other July models when we threw it off of a counter fully packed, proving its durability. We also like how you can adjust the handle to any height you want, making it comfortable to carry whether you want to glide it on two or four wheels.

The Details: 9.2 pounds | 30.32 x 20.87 x 11.22 inches | 105-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus

  • Durability 4.5 /5

This suitcase has an attractive, vintage-inspired aesthetic, plus modern features for easy packing and organization.

Though it doesn't expand, it's one of the larger carry-ons we tried.

The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus boasts a sophisticated, vintage-inspired aesthetic and modern features. Available in versatile neutrals and statement colorways, it has a polycarbonate shell with contrasting vegan leather accents. The exterior proved durable during our tests, showing only a few minor scuffs, which may not be as noticeable on the darker colors.

Though it doesn't expand, this is one of the larger carry-on suitcases we tried. It has excellent capacity with zippered compartments and a compression pad, allowing us to easily fit all items on our packing list. We also like that it comes with a laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate. Not only that, but it was a piece of cake to maneuver on different types of flooring and around tight corners.

The Details: 8.5 pounds | 23 x 15 x 9.5 inches | 46.6-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Away The Trunk

This 107-liter trunk is extremely spacious, with a slimmer top lid and a deeper main compartment.

Make sure you pack the bag evenly on each side, otherwise it can feel lopsided.

A trunk is a stylish alternative to your typical clamshell suitcase — instead of splitting evenly down the middle, it has a 30/70 design with a thinner top half and a deeper main compartment. This is useful if you have any large or bulky items, making it easier to fit everything inside the spacious checked bag. We put the trunk to the test, gliding it through our obstacle course full of people and found that it maneuvers much smoother than a regular checked bag because of the taller rectangle shape. The trunk is surprisingly lightweight for its large size, but we did notice that it felt a little heavier on one side because of the way we packed it, so we recommend distributing your items evenly on each side so that it doesn’t feel lopsided. This was also the most durable piece of Away luggage we tested, surviving our table drops and baseball bat beating with nearly a scuff or scratch. Bonus points for the included sponge that you can use to wipe off any scuffs.

The Details: 12.1 pounds | 31.3 x 17 x 13.7 inches | 107-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Most Durable

Roam the check-in.

  • Capacity 4 /5

Backed by a lifetime warranty, this suitcase has an extremely resilient shell, water-repellent zippers, and a customizable colorblock design.

It's somewhat small for checked luggage.

When it comes to durability, the Roam Check-in is tough to beat. The rigid polycarbonate shell looks and feels sturdy, and it sustained exactly zero nicks, scuffs, or dents during our tests. For even more peace of mind, the exterior zippers are water-repellent — perfect if you're packing for a trip to London or any potentially rainy location. It's on the smaller side for checked luggage, but the expander gives you an extra couple of inches. While we were able to fit all the essentials for a four-day vacation, we would have appreciated a bit more space.

This midsize suitcase was easy to move around — even on gravel — and the handles come in handy when lifting it. The color block design is cool but not over the top and makes for a great way to spot your luggage at baggage claim . You can customize it if you're not a fan of the pre-curated colors or just want something entirely unique. It's definitely one of the more expensive options, but Roam backs it with a lifetime warranty.

Best Splurge

Rimowa original cabin.

Backed by a lifetime guarantee, this futuristic suitcase is impressively spacious, with a durable aluminum exterior and smooth-rolling wheels.

It's not expandable, and the metallic exterior is prone to scuffs.

When it comes to aluminum luggage , the Rimowa Original Cabin is a worthwhile investment if you can swing the steep price. Though it doesn't expand, this suitcase meets carry-on size limits for most airlines while still offering an impressive amount of interior space. We packed it for a four-day trip and easily fit several outfits, outerwear, and multiple pairs of shoes inside. Not only that, but the dividers help ensure everything stays securely in place.

Thanks to the smooth-gliding spinner wheels, we had no issue rolling this bag over hard floors, carpet, pavement, and even cobblestone. We can't say it's the lightest carry-on, but it's not super heavy, either. We could hoist it into an overhead compartment and lift it into a car when packed full. Our favorite thing about this suitcase might be the slick, futuristic design and high-end appearance. It's remarkably durable, too, sustaining zero damage during our in-cabin travel test. The brand backs the suitcase with a lifetime guarantee, but make sure to register your luggage as soon as you pull it out of the packaging.

The Details: 9.5 pounds | 21.7 x 15.8 x 9.1 inches | 34.8-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best for Staying Organized

Béis large check-in roller.

This checked suitcase has an enormous capacity, and zippered compartments, pockets, and even removable pouches for easy packing.

It's durable, but the exterior is prone to scuffing.

This checked suitcase is one of the biggest we tested. There was easily enough room for double the amount of stuff on our packing list — and that's without the expander, which adds another three inches to the depth. Beyond the enormous 112-liter capacity, the internal pockets and removable pouches helped us keep things organized, while the zippered compartment and compression straps ensured everything stayed in place. It also comes with a laundry bag for keeping your dirty clothes separated while you're away and a retractable strap to make carrying another piece of luggage easier . We did notice, over three months of testing, that the downside to the large size and helpful organizational features is that it's easy to overpack, leading to overweight luggage fees.

Considering how big this suitcase is, the smooth spinner wheels and padded handle make it super comfortable to maneuver. While this bag passed our durability tests without any dents or scratches, it scuffs pretty easily. However, the darker colors should conceal marks better, and you can wipe down the exterior to remove any scuffs as needed.

The Details: 11.5 pounds | 31.3 x 19.6 x 12.6 inches | 112-liter capacity | Expandable | 4 spinner wheels

Best Expandable

Travelpro platinum elite hardside spinner.

 Amazon

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This checked suitcase has a crack-resistant shell and a spacious capacity with an expander that adds two inches to the depth.

It weighs a little over 12 pounds, and the large size makes it easy to go over the weight limit.

The Check-in Hardside Spinner from Travelpro's Platinum Elite line is nice and spacious, with an expansion zipper that adds a full two inches to the depth. We had no problem fitting the entire packing list and felt like there was room to spare, which is what you'd expect from great expandable luggage . They liked how the zipper panels and cross straps kept everything in place when they opened and closed it.

This large, 108-liter suitcase has an ultra-strong polycarbonate shell that resists cracking and crushing. After pushing it off a table and hitting it a few times with a bat, we noticed only a few superficial marks — no dents and nothing that wouldn't wipe off. It also rolls smoothly over carpet, bumps, and even gravel. We think the price is a good value considering the generous size, high-quality design, and five-year warranty.

The Details: 12.1 pounds | 30 x 18 x 13.5 inches | 108-liter capacity | Expandable | 4 wheels

Best With Removable Battery

July carry on.

This bag comes with an ejectable battery with a USB-C charger, and the telescopic handle features 20 different heights.

It doesn’t have an expander, and we wish there were more internal pockets for additional storage.

This carry-on is appropriately sized to fit in the overhead bin on standard airlines without feeling overly bulky or cumbersome. Though it doesn’t have an expander, it felt like it had a larger capacity than similarly sized carry-ons that we’ve tried. Our favorite thing about this smart suitcase is that it comes with a removable battery so you don’t have to live in fear of your phone dying when you can’t find an open outlet in the airport. While many smart bags have a charger, they don’t always include the battery as well.

The polycarbonate shell feels very durable, with reinforced bumpers that felt like they added an extra layer of protection against our drop tests, in which we threw the fully packed bag off a tall counter from different angles. The wheels rolled smoothly over both concrete and carpet, and the interior Y-strap compression system helped keep all of our belongings in place. We also loved that we could raise the handle to 20 different heights, making it comfortable to walk with no matter how tall or short you are.

The Details: 7.4 pounds | 21.5 x 15 x 8.5 inches | 42-liter capacity | Smart | 4 dual spinner wheels

We've tested more than 450 pieces of luggage in our New York City lab and on our airplane set to assess durability, capacity, maneuverability, design, and overall value. In line with the size of each bag, we packed them with enough essentials for a multi-day trip, including pants, shirts, underwear, socks, shoes, jackets, and toiletries, paying special attention to organizational features. We threw the bags off tables and hit the with baseball bats to test durability, ran them over different surfaces and through obstacle courses to test maneuverability, and lifted them into overhead bins to see how lightweight they felt. Following our lab assessments, we continue testing the bags in our real-life travels over a six-month period (and beyond!) to see how they perform long-term. Every few months, we test even more suitcases, and we will continue updating this article as we discover new luggage we love.

Other Hardside Luggage We Liked

These bags did not make our list of recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Out Of Bounds 28-inch Lightweight Durable Hardshell : This is a stylish, spacious suitcase at a fantastic price. The only thing that kept it from the winners list here is that it did not roll as well on gravel as some others.

Béis The Carry-on Roller : We love the organizational features and sophisticated look of this bag. If it rolled just a tiny bit better it would be up on our winners list.

July Carry-on Pro : Testers really liked this bag, especially the standout maneuverability and good looks. The only real knock on it was that the compression straps could be a little tighter.

Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 International Carry-on : This suitcase is conveniently compact, lightweight, and easy to maneuver. However, we found it to be too small for most trips, and the zippers are hard to close when it's packed full.

Tips for Buying Hardside Luggage

Remember durability is key.

Hardside luggage is about more than a sleek, modern appearance — though this is a welcome bonus. Suitcases with rigid shells are typically made of polycarbonate, a high-strength thermoplastic. This helps protect your belongings from impact, whether your belongings include a formal suit , a robust makeup collection , wine bottles, or camera equipment.

In addition to preventing things from crushing or breaking, hardside luggage is also easy to wipe clean. Having said that, lighter colors and matte finishes are sometimes prone to scuffing.

Don't overlook the interior and organizational features

When browsing options, don't overlook the interior. A suitcase should ideally have a spacious capacity, even if it's a relatively compact carry-on. Organizational features can make packing and accessing everything much easier, too, in addition to using packing cubes . This might include dual main compartments, dividers, zippered sections, a compression panel, various pockets, a shoe separator, a laptop sleeve, a garment sleeve, or a removable laundry bag.

Look for a lightweight design with good maneuverability

We also recommend looking for lightweight luggage, especially when carrying on. Note the empty weight before buying a hardside suitcase, as heavier models can make it harder to lift and roll when packed full. In terms of maneuverability, four spinner wheels are ideal. A locking telescoping handle will make pushing and pulling a jam-packed suitcase more comfortable. And grab handles will make it easier to lift into an overhead bin.

Hardside suitcases are the gold standard for many travelers. Besides the contemporary appearance, lots of folks appreciate how they protect what's inside. However, after testing more than 250 total pieces of luggage, we can tell you that a rigid shell doesn't always point to superior durability. Softside models are often just as resilient, and they tend to be more flexible if you need to stuff more items inside. While textile exteriors can be difficult to keep clean, they typically don't scuff as easily.

As noted, rigid suitcases can scuff, especially lighter colors and matte finishes. But they're generally very easy to clean . You can gently polish a suitcase with mild soap and water or a luggage-specific cleaning spray. If you're on the go or short on time, you can wipe it down with a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe or even a window-cleaning towelette.

Suitcase linings are sometimes removable and machine-washable. If not, you can likely wipe it down just as you would the outside, then leave it open so it can air-dry thoroughly. When in doubt, check the brand's care instructions.

Most hardside suitcases are made from sturdy plastic of polycarbonate that may scuff but shouldn't crack. Some hardside luggage — especially those made from less expensive materials — can crack over time, but durable bags should stand up to your travels. Many luggage brands now offer limited or lifetime warranties on their bags, so be sure to read their policies before buying if you're worried about potential damage.

Migrate 110L Wheeled Duffel Bag

Best Sustainable

Eagle creek migrate 110l wheeled duffel bag.

If you're headed on a long trip or just consider yourself an over-packer, you might need more than one bag for your belongings (not to mention space to overfill with souvenirs on the way home). Instead of lugging around a hodgepodge of pieces, consider a luggage set. There's nothing more chic and put together than carrying a coordinating set of luggage complete with carry-on and checked bags. And if you're vacationing with kids or family, traveling with a matching set is a great way to keep track of all your bags. But with so many options to choose from, including different types of materials and all kinds of organizational features, it can be difficult to decide which luggage sets will look great, hold up to frequent use and really be worth the splurge.

Samsonite continues to stand out in our Lab evaluations and has wowed our consumer testers , earning it the title of best overall luggage brand . This luggage set includes two of our top-tested suitcases from the brand's Freeform collection — the smaller 21-inch carry-on model and the larger 28-inch checked bag. These suitcases are made of durable hardside material that performed well in our drop tests, resisting major damage after being released repeatedly at different angles from a set 3-foot height.

When we packed the suitcases with a standard load of items like clothing, shoes and accessories, we were impressed by how well everything fit inside with room to spare — even without having to use the 2-inch expansion system. One caveat: Some of our testers noted that the carrying handles on suitcases in this collection felt a bit tight, which made it more difficult to lift or lower the bags. However, the telescopic handles received higher scores for feeling sturdy and comfortable to use. Testers also appreciated how easily the suitcases navigated around twists and turns and said the 360-degree spinner wheels were smooth.

an open and closed suitcase from samsonite

At less than $100 for three pieces, this basic American Tourister trio is an absolute steal and one of the best affordable luggage sets out there. While the softsided carry-on, checked bag and personal item may be simple, they're still full of practical features that make traveling easier like plenty of external pockets, interior mesh pockets and compression straps to secure your belongings.

The brand's bags aren't as durable as others we've tested in the Lab, so I recommend this set for someone who isn't planning to fly frequently. According to one GH analyst who has used this set for nearly a decade, the bags have still held up well to repeated use. She added that the softside polyester material is slightly worn with some fraying and scuffs, but the bags are still useable, and the important features, like the telescopic handles and zippers, are in working condition. When we evaluated other suitcases from American Tourister, testers highlighted the smooth and stable wheels, and online reviewers say they roll nicely, despite only moving forward and backward.

Originally designed by a pilot for other pilots who are always on the go, Travelpro's luggage is the perfect pick for the frequent flyer, and I'm particularly impressed by the brand's Platinum Elite collection. The softside suitcases were some of the top performers in our durability tests , withstanding repeated dropping without dents or damage. The nylon material resisted signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth with our abrasion tester. They are heavier than many of the other bags we tested, but they are durable bags built to last.

The suitcases are thoughtfully designed with a tapered expansion system that prevents the bags from tipping over when full. Self-aligning spinner wheels let you push and pull in all directions, and cushioned handles with contoured grips add a comfortable feel. Plus, they're packed full of extras inside like expandable garment bags, toiletries bags and hidden USB ports to charge electronic devices (power bank not included). Our testers gave luggage in this collection high scores for ease of use and highlighted the sturdiness of the telescopic handle. If you're nervous about committing to the high price tag, the brand offers a 100-day return policy, even for used suitcases.

two samsonite suitcases open and closed

For luggage that looks as great as it performs, I recommend Calpak's Ambeur two-piece luggage set, which offers the best of fashion and function. Available in five fun metallic shades that are sure to stand out at baggage claim, the bags are made of a composite of polycarbonate and ABS plastic that aced our Lab tests for durability. They also proved water-resistant in our evaluations, but did show noticeable markings after we dragged a wire across the surface during our scratch-resistance tests.

The bags are GH-tester favorites and earned top marks for their performance in our luggage obstacle course which had testers pull the suitcases over different surfaces and around sharp turns. Testers especially loved the sturdy and easy-to-use telescopic handle. When we assessed the suitcases in the Lab, we were impressed by the zippers that opened and closed with ease. The spacious interior compartments were able to hold our entire packing load of items including clothing, shoes and toiletries. Both the carry-on and checked bag are expandable and equipped with zippered organizational pockets, compression straps and a removable toiletries bag. For even more organization, you can try Calpak's top-tested packing cubes too.

Not only does this two-piece luggage set from Amazon Basics have more than 34,000 five-star reviews, but it also earned high scores in our Lab evaluations and was loved by our testers. The carry-on and checked suitcase both unfold into two main packing compartments, one with compression straps to keep your belongings in place and another with a full zippered panel for even more security. When we packed the carry-on bag in the Lab, we fit an entire weekend's worth of gear including clothing, shoes and toiletries with room to spare. Plus, both of the suitcases expand for even more space.

The hardside suitcases are made of lightweight ABS plastic that keeps the price low, though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some other suitcases we tested. It did hold up well in our drop tests though, with no serious denting or breakage after being released repeatedly from a set 3-foot height. When testers rolled the suitcases through our luggage obstacle course, around turns and over different surfaces from wood to carpeting, they were impressed by the maneuverability and wheel performance.

As the name implies, these Delsey Helium DLX suitcases are some of the lightest we've evaluated in the Lab. No more lugging around bulky bags or struggling to lift your carry-on into the overhead bin. Despite being so lightweight, these bags are tough. In our tests for durability, the luggage held up well after being released repeatedly in our drop tests, and the softside nylon material showed no signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth 15,000 times by our abrasion tester.

In our evaluations, we found the exterior zippers a bit tricky to use, and the bags received lower scores for maneuverability than other suitcases we tried, but they did earn high scores for their comfortable gripped telescopic handles and for being easy to pack. All three of the suitcases open into one primary packing compartment with compression straps, and the lids of each bag are equipped with zippered pockets and elastic sleeves for additional storage. There are removable bi-fold organizers inside as well. I particularly love that the linings can be unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

Designed with simplicity in mind, this two-piece set from luggage brand Monos has a sleek, modern look that our testers love. Both of the bags opened to reveal two spacious compartments that were able to fit our entire load of items in our packing tests. The carry-on bag features an adjustable compression panel, while the larger checked bag is equipped with compression straps and a larger fabric panel to keep everything in place. What's more, there are plenty of organizational mesh pockets inside the bags, along with additional shoe bags and a laundry bag to separate your dirty clothes.

During Lab evaluations, the durable carry-on and checked suitcase resisted major denting and damage in our drop tests. Both we and our consumer testers noticed prominent scuffing on the suitcases after use, but the brand provides a sponge for cleaning. One GH analyst said the sponge removed most of the marks on her bag. In our luggage obstacle course, testers appreciated the smooth gliding wheels and loved how effortless it was to maneuver the bags around twists and turns. They also noticed how well the telescopic handles locked into place at four different heights for easy toting.

an open and closed suitcase from monos

Popular luggage brand Away carries sets of its best-selling carry-on and large checked bag for a better value — $50 off the full retail price. The hardside suitcases are loved by testers who highlighted the streamlined look and the spacious, well-organized interior. The bags open into two separate packing compartments with zippered mesh panels and pockets for additional space. There's also an adjustable compression panel inside each bag so you can really stuff it full if you're an over-packer like me. When we packed the bags in the Lab, we appreciated how smoothly the zippers opened and closed and how much we could fit inside.

The polycarbonate material is super lightweight — even lighter than some of our favorite softside luggage — and ultra-durable. It performed well in our drop tests, remaining in great condition after being released multiple times from a set 3-foot height. In our scratch tests, the bags showed minimal scuffs and markings. One caveat: Our consumer testers gave the telescopic handle lower ratings for feeling a bit wobbly when fully extended. The bags received high scores for their maneuverability and smooth wheels. If you want to add a personal touch to your luggage set, Away offers monograms of up to three letters for an added fee.

If you're on Instagram or TikTok, chances are that you've come across viral luggage brand Béis . Actress Shay Mitchell's trendsetting travel brand offers carry-ons, checked bags, weekender bags and more — all thoughtfully designed. The suitcases feature details like cushy padded telescopic handles, a retractable strap to hold a small bag or your travel blanket and a built-in weight indicator to let you know if your bag exceeds 50 pounds. I'm especially a fan of the chic monochromatic color options — even the metal of the telescopic handle matches.

When we tested the brand's suitcases in the Textiles Lab, my fellow GH analysts and I were impressed by how well the luggage withstood dents and damage after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. We did note that the material was more prone to scratches and scuffs than other luggage we tested. The suitcases open butterfly style, exposing a spacious zippered compartment and a compartment with a secure compression strap. A few smaller pockets help keep your things organized. You can choose which pieces to include in your luggage set , so the price and number of pieces vary depending on your selections.

Whether you prefer traveling with a duffel, want something that will hold up to your outdoor adventures or are looking for a more sustainable luggage option, Eagle Creek has you covered. The brand's Migrate duffels are sold individually, but I like how you can build your own set with five sizes ranging from 40L to 130L. Each bag is convertible: You can carry it with the attached handles or wear it on your shoulders like a backpack. The larger checked sizes can also be tilted back to roll on the ground with the built-in wheels, while the smaller duffels (like the brand's 40L duffel ) make a convenient carry-on.

All of the bags are made of 100% recycled polyester with a TPU coating that's water-resistant and easy to wipe clean. Plus, it's super durable, and one GH analyst who regularly travels with Eagle Creek duffels says the material holds up well to rough use. The duffels have a wide opening to make packing a breeze, and the large zipper tabs are convenient and easy to pull. Once your bag is packed, you can buckle the outer compression straps to secure your belongings.

How we test the best luggage

line break

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test all kinds of luggage to determine which pieces are worth buying. We evaluate luggage in the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and share it with consumer testers who bring the luggage on their own trips and then provide us with valuable feedback. Here's what we look for when we test suitcases:

  • Size and weight: To ensure that the brands' listed dimensions for the suitcases are accurate, we measure each bag in the Lab. We weigh the bags and place carry-ons in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to make sure the suitcases meet most airline restrictions.

textiles lab executive director lexie sachs opening a piece of luggage

  • Ease of use: We test the luggage to determine how easy it is to open and close zippers and built-in locks, raise and lower the telescopic handles, roll the wheels, grab the carrying handles and more. We then rate and score the luggage for overall ease of use.

  • Packing: We fill each piece of luggage with a standard load of items like clothing, shoes, accessories and toiletries (pictured) to test the capacity. For larger checked bags, we pack them with a week's worth of items and for carry-on bags, we add a weekend trip's worth of items. We then score each suitcase on how much it's able to hold.

  • Drop testing: We fill the suitcases with a standard amount of weight and then load them into our drop tester (pictured). We then release the luggage from a set 3-foot height and repeatedly drop the luggage from different angles, evaluating each piece for any dents, damages or scuffs.

Hardshell suitcases, traveler’s choice wellington.

Traveler's Choice Wellington Polycarbonate Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage, Navy, 3-Piece Set

The Wellington suitcases have  a ribbed shell made from Polycarbonate . It will bend under pressure, so it is less likely to break than a plain plastic shell. In addition to that, the shell has a metallic finish with a brushed texture, that makes all scuffs and scratches less visible.

This luggage features  an aluminum wheel handle that locks into multiple height stages . And the suitcases also have single spinner wheels, which make them really easy to maneuver.

These Traveler’s Choice suitcases also have  a TSA lock – a must for all of you who frequently fly to the United States.  The  i nterior of these includes two packing compartments with expandable capacity. The top one has a zippered divider with two large pockets, while the bottom compartment has elastic tie-down straps and a few pockets.

There’s also something really unique in the bottom compartment of these –  detachable dividers. They allow you to basically separate a packing compartment into two parts, which is amazing for the organization.  The largest suitcase has two of them, while the smaller two feature just one. If this sounds like a feature you would use often, then definitely get a Wellington suitcase.

Traveler’s Choice Tasmania

Traveler's Choice Tasmania 100% Pure Polycarbonate Expandable Spinner Luggage, Purple, 3-Piece Set

The Tasmania suitcases are  Polycarbonate hardshells with lots of useful features.  The design of their shells is one of those – it has  a diamond-cut pattern which really helps make it scratch-resistant. Plus, since it is made from a PC, you expect these suitcases to be very durable and sturdy.

Each one of these Traveler’s Choice suitcases has  four double spinner wheels,  which give you great maneuverability of your luggage. Plus, they have  aluminum wheel handles that you can adjust to multiple height positions.  And with a couple of non-slip grab handles, traveling with these suitcases should feel effortless.

They feature  TSA-friendly combination locks , which give you peace of mind when you travel. And what’s really useful is that  all three suitcases have an add-a-bag strap.  This allows you to attach an additional bag to the top of the suitcase so that moving around with several bags is easier.

Or, if you are actually traveling with all three Tasmania suitcases, you can attach them to one another and maneuver all three with just one arm.

Their interior consists of  two fully lined packing compartments with expandable capacity.  The top one has a full panel divider with two zippered mesh pockets, while the bottom one features tie-down straps and a single zippered pocket. Overall, this is something you see in a lot of other suitcases, so no surprises there.

Traveler’s Choice Barcelona

Traveler's Choice Barcelona Polycarbonate Spinner & Packing Cubes Luggage Set, Grey, Carry-on 22-Inch

The Barcelona suitcases are a really interesting option. They’re not like the other Traveler’s Choice suitcases, since these feature a front-opening packing compartment. These are  made completely from Polycarbonate , so you know that they will be really durable and impact resistant. But they  don’t have corner guards , which is one thing I wish was different.

These suitcases are just amazing for the organization. You can actually use them several different ways – one way is to use them as a standard clamshell suitcase. But you also have the option of separating the bottom and the top packing compartment and using the top one as a separate compartment for your electronics.

Also, you can just turn everything into one large packing compartment, with lots of different pockets.

I really like this feature, and I think it allows everyone to choose how they want to pack and see what suits them best. It has two locks as well,  but they are plain key-locks which are TSA-compliant.  So, you will need to carry around the key (and hopefully not lose it).

The  wheels on the Barcelona suitcases are actually Dual Cyclone wheels. They are quiet and really smooth, and Traveler’s Choice is actually trying to patent them! Additionally, the telescopic handle is also completely their design – it curves downwards so that it fits the natural position of your arms and puts less strain on them.

Overall, if you don’t mind the somewhat higher price tag, I would definitely recommend these suitcases!

  • Suitcases come with packing cubes
  • Great for organization
  • Expandable capacity
  • Kind of heavy
  • On the pricier side
  • Uses a TSA key lock (as opposed to a combination lock)
  • Barcelona 22”: Dimensions: 21.5” x 14.25” x 10.5”, Weight: 8.25 lbs
  • Barcelona 30”: Dimensions: 30” x 19.5” x 12.5”; Weight: 12.5 lbs

Traveler’s Choice Bell Weather

Bell Weather Carry-On Spinner Rose Gold

The Bell Weather suitcases are a good affordable option. They are  made from Polycarbonate and they have metallic ribbed shells,  which do a great job at hiding all the little scuffs and scratches. Actually, they remind me a lot of the  Rimowa Topas luggage – due to the colors, design, and appearance of their exterior.

These suitcases are actually quite cheap, which is not something you can say about the Rimowa Topas. And these have zippered closures, including a TSA-friendly combination lock and an expansion zipper.

They feature double spinner wheels that roll smoothly, along with a telescopic wheel handle wit h adjustable height.  And one thing I really like about these suitcases is that  they actually have corner guards . These significantly improve their impact resistance and make the luggage more durable.

The interior of these suitcases features  two fully lined packing compartments . With navy blue lining –  similar to the Rimowa Topas , if I might add.

But, back to the Traveler’s Choice suitcases – they have an expandable capacity and two zippered pockets on the divider in the top compartment.

  • Bell Weather 24”: Dimensions: 24” x 17” x 11”, Weight: 9.5 lbs

Traveler’s Choice La Serena

Traveler's Choice La Serena Polycarbonate Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage, Gray, 3-Piece Set

The last, but definitely not the least, hardsides from Traveler’s Choice we’ll check out are the La Serena suitcases . They feature  a polycarbonate shell with a diamond-cut texture that is super easy to clean, and that makes any scratches less visible. If only they had reinforced corners, right?

One interesting feature of these suitcases is the  anti-theft zipper.  It is a  burst-resistant double coil zipper, which stands up well against thieves.

The suitcases also have  a TSA-friendly lock and has double spinner wheels that allow for effortless maneuvering,  especially in combination with the  telescopic wheel handle . Plus, the handle locks into multiple positions, so it should be fairly easy to adjust to fit your height.

The interior consists of  two packing compartments with expandable capacity,  and it’s actually pretty much the same as the interior of the Bell Weather suitcases. The top compartment has a zippered divider, as well as two mesh zippered pockets on it. And the bottom divider has tie-down straps that will keep your belongings in place.

Check the links below to see the La Serena suitcases on Amazon:

Softshell Suitcases

Traveler’s choice cornwall.

Traveler's Choice Cornwall Lightweight Expandable Spinner Luggage, Charcoal, Checked-Medium 25-Inch

The Cornwall luggage is constructed from high-density polyester. The suitcases are pretty lightweight and super durable and reliable, due to their sturdy construction. They also feature  four double spinner wheels that glide smoothly and quietly.  You don’t see these too often on softshell luggage, and it’s always a nice surprise when you do!

All Cornwall suitcases have  add-a-bag straps , which allow you to secure additional luggage on top of your suitcase. But it also allows you to chain several of these together – this is really useful if you travel with more than one suitcase.

The interior of these Traveler’s Choice suitcases is fully lined.  The packing compartment features  padded tie-down straps, which actually have pockets on them. There is also a slip-pocket inside the packing compartment, as well as  a suiter section  on the closing flap of the suitcase.

And if you don’t think that’s enough pockets, you’ll be happy to know that this luggage also features  external pockets . Two of them, to be precise, make organizing all of your stuff super easy. Oh, and the  capacity of the Cornwalls is expandable  – you can expand the capacity of these suitcases by an  additional 30%.

Check the links below to see the Cornwall suitcases on Amazon:

  • Cornwall 25”
  • Cornwall 30”
  • Add-a-bag strap
  • Wheel handle is not height adjustable
  • Do not have locks

  • Cornwall 29”: Dimensions: 29” x 18” x 9”, Weight: 10 lbs

Traveler’s Choice Birmingham

Traveler's Choice Birmingham Ballistic Nylon Expandable Rollaboard Luggage, Red, Carry-on 21-Inch

The Birmingham suitcases are  made from 1680D polyester – a water-repellent fabric, which is highly durable . They are also  padded with EVA foam f or increased durability and improved impact resistance.

The only thing that’s missing from these is spinner wheels. Instead, you have two in-line skate wheels, which means you will have to tilt the suitcase to get them rolling. That’s not really the ideal convenience of traveling, but most people are usually okay with this. And the aluminum wheel handle is ergonomically shaped, so it should feel comfortable in your hands.

You can’t lock it in different height positions though, and that is one downside. But you do get some  comfortable and sturdy grab handle s,  so there’s that. And one thing I really like is the little  plastic feet – they allow your suitcase to stand upright when fully packed, and ensure that it won’t tilt or tip over.

I think you’ll find that especially useful when you decide to expand its capacity and pack more stuff than you should.

The  i nterior of these Traveler’s Choice suitcases is fully lined and it is actually pretty similar to the interior of the Cornwall. Both have padded-tie-down straps with mesh pockets and a slip pocket on the side of the packing compartment.

This suitcase also has a suiter section with a couple of mesh zippered pockets on the closure flap, which makes traveling organized super easy. And there are two external compartments, for all the things you accidentally forget to pack!

Check the links below to see the Birmingham suitcases on Amazon:

  • Birmingham 21”
  • Birmingham 25”
  • Birmingham 29”
  • Lots of pockets and compartments
  • Water repellent exterior
  • In-line skate wheels
  • You can’t adjust the height of the wheel handle
  • Birmingham 21”: Dimensions: 21” x 14” x 8.5”, Weight: 7.9 lbs
  • Birmingham 25”: Dimensions: 25” x 16” x 9.5”, Weight: 9.3 lbs
  • Birmingham 29”: Dimensions: 29” x 18” x 10.5”, Weight: 11 lbs

Traveler’s Choice Silverwood

Traveler's Choice Silverwood Polycarbonate Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage, Brushed Metal, Carry-on 21-Inch

The Silverwood suitcases are an interesting option. They actually come in both a softshell and a hardshell version. I wanted to show you the softshell version because the hardshell one is really similar to the Barcelona luggage. These also have  Dual Cyclone Spherical spinner wheels that roll quietly and smoothly, as well as the T-Cruiser ergonomic handle system for effortless maneuvering.

The Traveler’s Choice patented handle system is designed to maximize the space inside the suitcase, while still allowing you to carry a second bag on top of your luggage. Plus,  the handle itself can be locked in several height positions, so you can easily adjust it to fit you right.

These are also  some of the lightest softside suitcases we check out in this review , which gives them a big advantage. And they also have  rubberized corner guards, which improve their overall durability. I would definitely recommend these suitcases if you’re looking for some high-quality softshells!

Their packing compartment is pretty spacious and it has expandable capacity.  There is one pocket inside the actual compartment, and several zippered ones on the closing cover. Oh, and  a bunch of external pockets and compartments,  that really make it easy to organize all of your stuff.

Check the links below to see the Silverwood suitcases on Amazon:

Traveler’s Choice Amsterdam

Travel Select Amsterdam Expandable Rolling Upright Luggage, Gray, 4-Piece Set

The Amsterdam suitcases are a great choice if you want to get a set. For about $100 you can get an 8-piece luggage set, which includes three suitcases, packing cubes, and a rolling under-seater. I  think that’s excellent value for money, especially considering all the rave reviews this luggage has.

The suitcases are made from 1200D two-tone Polyester, which is a pretty sturdy material. And they have EVA foam padded front panels, for improved protection and impact resistance. The overall exterior of the luggage is actually pretty durable – apart from  the in-line skate wheels , that is. They are generally less durable than spinner wheels but are luckily really easy to fix.

One thing that’s really useful about this luggage, especially if you actually decide to get the set, is that  all three suitcases have an add-a-bag strap. This makes traveling with multiple bugs much more convenient and frees up your hands. You can maneuver your luggage with just one  telescopic wheel handle that locks into the extended position.

The  capacity of these Traveler’s Choice suitcases is expandable.  They have a single packing compartment with tie-down straps, which is pretty normal for softside luggage. Plus, they have  multiple pockets.  Two slip internal pockets and a large zippered one, and then also at least three external pockets, depending on the size you get.

  • Wheel handle doesn’t lock in multiple positions
  • Amsterdam 21”: Dimensions: 21” x 13.5” x 7.5”, Weight: 7.75 lbs

Traveler’s Choice Conventional II

Traveler's Choice Conventional II Expandable Rugged Rollaboard Luggage, Black, Carry-on 21-Inch

The Conventional II suitcases are a good option if you want to get some professional-looking luggage. These are simple, sleek, and yet really practical. They are made from 1200D Polyester, so they are actually pretty durable . Also, the  hardware on this luggage is industrial strength , which tells you a lot about how sturdy they are.

They feature  in-line skate wheels,  which is a bummer. But at least they are  quiet and roll smoothly . However, that still means you will need to tilt the suitcases to get them rolling and your arms might not like that.

But at least you have a sturdy telescopic wheel handle that locks into position when extended, for smooth maneuvering.  And all suitcases have  add-a-bag straps , that make traveling with several pieces of luggage feel no different than traveling with a single suitcase.

There are two external pockets on these Traveler’s Choice suitcases, which are medium-sized. Perfect for any last-minute items you forgot to pack. Also, their  capacity is expandable by an additional 30% , so you won’t have any issues with bringing back more items than you originally left fit!

What’s going on inside the suitcases? Well, they have  one large packing compartment with tie-down straps  to keep your things in place. There is also a large mesh pocket on the top cover of the suitcase, but that’s pretty much it, in terms of internal pockets.

Check the links below to see the Conventional II suitcases on Amazon:

  • Conventional II 21”
  • Conventional II 25”
  • Several external pockets
  • Just one internal pocket

What To Look For

Hardside or softside.

This is usually the hardest decision. On the one hand, hardsides are more durable than softsides and they last longer. But they are also more expensive. But then again, softsides are better for organization and they are usually lighter. So how do you choose?

Simple. If you frequently check your suitcase at an airport, then you need to get a hardside. No doubt about that. Hardshell luggage handles being thrown around by baggage handlers are a lot better than softshell luggage, and it will last you longer.

For any other use, it comes down to your personal preferences. And I would recommend you consider which features you really want to have – is it an external compartment? Expandable capacity? Multiple dividers and pockets? If you manage to find a suitcase that has everything you want and you don’t intend to check it at an airport, then it doesn’t really matter if it is a softshell or a hard shell .

Which Size Should I Buy?

Depends on a few things. First, it  depends on the length of your trips – if you don’t go really go away for longer than a week at a time, you’ll be fine with a carry-on. But if you are planning a longer trip soon, or need to share the suitcase with someone, then you should definitely check out the larger luggage.

It also depends on how you travel.  If you usually fly places, then there are all those rules and regulations to consider. A carry-on is the easiest option – you won’t have to pay any extra fees and you never have to worry about the safety of your luggage, since it’s right next to you in the cabin.

But with the larger suitcases, overpacking is always a concern. And then you have to weigh your suitcase and make sure that you are within the airline’s weight limit for checked bags. Otherwise, you’re out another $50.

So, if you usually go on shorter trips and don’t really bring a lot of stuff with you, then definitely get a carry-on.  You’ll get more use out of it, and also better value for money. Just keep in mind that  the dimensions I’ve listed in the mini-reviews refer to the dimensions of the entire suitcase, including the wheels and the handle. The actual packing compartments are slightly smaller.

Most of this doesn’t apply to you if you don’t really spend a lot of time on airlines. If you tend to drive places or travel by bus and train, then the one thing you should consider is the convenience of travel. To clarify – I made the mistake of traveling alone by train with a 30” suitcase once in my life. And my arms were sore for the next week.

How Durable Does Your Suitcase Need To Be?

Obviously, you want a suitcase that you can use for years. But you don’t always need an ultra-durable suitcase. And if you are aware of just how durable your suitcase needs to be, then you’ll easily get the best value for money.

If you’re planning on  f lying somewhere and you will need to check your suitcase, then a Polycarbonate hardside is your best option.  Their shells are flexible and impact-resistant, which is exactly what you want out of a checked bag. You will pay more for it now, but it will last you longer than any other type of suitcase would.

On the other hand , if you want to get a carry-on or you don’t really fly that often, then you can settle for a less sturdy suitcase. And ultimately save some money.

The reason why checked baggage needs to be exceptionally durable is that baggage handlers often throw it around. A softshell suitcase is not made to endure that – it will get squished and probably ripped super easily. The same goes for ABS suitcases – even though they are more durable than softsides, they don’t have the best impact resistance.

So, definitely check the materials that the luggage you are eyeing is made from. If you need super durability,  go for a hardside that’s pure Polycarbonate or at least an ABS/PC mixture.  But if your suitcase won’t be thrown around ruthlessly, then you’re fine with a plain ABS hardshell, or just some classic Polyester softshells.

Are The Sets Really Worth It?

They usually are. If you need to buy more than one suitcase, then I would definitely recommend a set.

Sometimes you’ll see that buying a set of three suitcases is actually cheaper than getting two individual suitcases. And I think that’s great value for money, even if you don’t really need that third suitcase. You can always gift it to someone, or just sell it and earn some money back!

Take a look at  the Wellington luggage – for $130 you can get two individual suitcases. But for an additional $10 you can get a set of all three.  And if that’s not really good value for money, I don’t know what is!

Sets are also the better option if you’re traveling with a friend or a partner and you both need new suitcases.

Traveler’s Choice Luggage Reviews: Our Top Choices

Still not sure what your best options are? Well, let me tell you about my four top choices.

Let’s start with the hardshells.  My overall favorite suitcase was definitely the Traveler’s Choice Barcelona . It has some really unique features that make it stand out, and that actually seem really interesting.

I love how you can transform the interior of the suitcase however you please – it can be two regular packing compartments, a giant one, or a small packing compartment and multiple additional ones. Plus, it has innovative wheels and a handle that make it effortless to move around the airport with it, which is exactly what you want!

  • The push-button mechanism and multi-stage locking feature allows you to adjust the height of the handle to maximize comfort
  • Patent-pending dual cyclone spherical spinner wheel system provides wide wheel base for better traction and stability

Traveler's Choice Barcelona Polycarbonate Spinner & Packing Cubes Luggage Set, Grey, Checked-Large 30-Inch

And if you are looking to get the best value for your money, I would definitely recommend the Traveler’s Choice Wellington set . It includes three suitcases, and it is actually really cheap.

Also, the suitcases themselves are really interesting – they have detachable dividers, which allow you to divide the main packing compartment into smaller sections. So, if you like traveling organized, these are the top suitcases to pick up!

  • Brush-textured finish features a beautiful metallic sheen.
  • 2-inch expandable feature offers extra packing capacity

And now  about the softshells – overall, my favorite suitcase was the Silverwood .  It has the same Traveler’s Choice patented features as the Barcelona hardshell, which is pretty amazing.

Plus, its corners are rubberized, and that significantly improves its durability and impact resistance – perhaps what you worry about the most with softside luggage. These have lots of different pockets and compartments, so they are also really good for traveling organized.

  • The wheels features a 5mm shock-resistant materials that assure smooth maneuverability and quiet rolling experience

Traveler's Choice Silverwood Softside T-Cruiser Expandable Spinner Luggage, Gray, Checked-Medium 26-Inch

  • Expansion gusset boosts extra packing capacity by 2 inches.
  • Top, side and bottom carry handles for easy lifting.

Traveler's Choice Silverwood Softside T-Cruiser Expandable Spinner Luggage, Gray, Checked-Large 30-Inch

But in terms of value for money, the Amsterdam 8-piece set is without a doubt the winner here. You get three suitcases, a travel bag, and four  packing cubes for a little over $100 – how cool is that? Also, the Amsterdam suitcases are actually the lightest softshells by Traveler’s Choice, and that’s pretty amazing. They have several different pockets and compartments and a convenient add-a-bag strap.

Travel Select Amsterdam Expandable Rolling Upright Luggage, Burgundy, 8-Piece Set

  • Deluxe set includes four packing cubes to help organize your belongings while offering luxury and durability
  • Luxurious superior two-tone polyester fabrication with PVC backing , Deluxe internal retractable push-button handle system

Head over to Amazon to see more photos of these suitcases and check out their prices! And if you don’t think this is the right luggage for you, be sure to check out some of our other reviews – your ideal suitcase might be waiting in one of them! RELATED POSTS:

Customer reviews

I took the medium sized suitcase on 2 flights. on the first one, a rubber strip on the suitcase broke. on the second, one of the wheels broke. It’s now unusable. Total junk.

Luggage had to replaced after the 1st trip, then the new set fell apart on the 2nd trip. Macy's stop selling this garbage.

Can’t wait to use

Awesome luggage. Good price and durable.

Did not review comments before purchase and too late to return. After reading didn’t know what to expect and if my luggage would be safe. From LAX/Sea/Alaska round trip and it worked well with no breakage/problems. I only used one time since purchased:)

This was a perfect gift for a college student I bought some time ago and my grandchild loves it

This is a horrible product ! I took it on 1 trip and the zipper started messing up and the bag started tearing inside . DO NOT BUY

Awful luggage. Wheel broke on first trip. Had to carry it around because it would not roll. Lots of dents put into it too after first trip. Not worth it. Find something better.

* We will be carrying 2-3 bags (large size, the kinds one carries overseas, but with l+b+h < 180cms each) weighing 15kgs per bag. What is the luggage storage facility on the train for such heavy baggage?

* Is there an option to "check-in" the baggage so that they can be transferred to the luggage- car , like we do with air travel?

* I understand that the luggage weight limit per person is 36kgs. Can this be across 2 suitcases or does it have to be 1 piece only?

' class=

There is no separate luggage check-in. The amount of luggage is basically limited to your capacity to carry it, so 36 kg per person would be any amount of bags you can handle yourself.

In Nevskiy express there are two types of seating - open-carriage seats and 6 person compartments. In both cases there are overhead racks, able to keep large suitcases. Enjoy your ride and stay in Russia!

Thanks a lot, Vasily. This is super helpful.

Vasily, one more question - on the rzd.ru website, I see that some times seats available are tagged "Seat for disabled passenger". Can ordinary passengers choose these seats or not, at the time of online booking?

' class=

Of course, no. They are for disabled.

They are bookable to those who have a registration as disabled in the government system. Non-disabled pax cannot book them.

Thank you both.

Also, would you know whats the luggage allowance on Sapsan trains? Its not clear from the rzd.ru website. Tia!!

See reply # 1.

Same as for all Rissian long-distance trains, 36 kg or 50 kg in first class. The fact is noone checks and weghtens your bags, unless they look really bulky. The rule here is "what you can carry yourself" is fine...

travel select naples hardside luggage

The cabin is shared by 6... and therez not much place for big bags. Unless all others dont have any

Thanks everybody, for your responses. We completed our journey on Sep 16 and had no issues with two large bags. We were able to place them both in the overhead bins. And small carry-ons / backpacks under our seats.

Edit: Our return was on the Saspan where too we did not have any issue. Our luggage was easily stowed away in the luggage hold area (racks) at the end of our coach and small bags/backpacks went on the overhead shelves. There was sufficient space.
