Top 3 airlines flying to Airlie Beach

This time is good . Don’t cancel flight with out early notice .

Very good experience, considering the short flight the meals were served promptly after takeoff.

X class seats in row 3 with the new configuration are very poor in fact I feel 3B and 3E should no longer be considered as X class seat as there is no forward seat pocket available to these seats and greatly reduced leg room due the intrusion of the business class armrests/table module

It was pretty good. Everyone friendly. Like all airlines, the draconian limitations on baggage and weight and not giving even a free soda kind of drags down the experience a bit.

Last 10 minutes boarding they canceled the flight and didn’t organise anything

Estheticly the plane looks great, although the seats are way too upright. If the seats were just slightly more reclined then the comfort level would increase tenfold. I had the stiffest neck after just a short flight due to this. A nap was almost out of the question.

Cabin crew were very professional and welcoming. They certainly appeared to have lifted their game. Congratulations

I know not directly a Virgin "thing" but I hold Virgin responsible for their subcontractors. Had to wait 45 minutes waiting for baggage at PER before the belt conveyor even started. This is unacceptable and hopefully Virgin engages with whoever to pull their fingers out. I realise PER staff are generally slow at the best of times but this was ridiculous. Maybe more seating for those waiting, a cafe in the baggage area for a light meal while we wait or at the very least a troop of dancing girls to entertain the punters while they stare at the conveyor belt start light almost willing it to fire up.

Very poor. Flight was cancelled due to captain exceeding hours. Told to fend for ourselves for 12 hours until a new flight could be done. This meant overnight accommodation in Hobart. Next plane was delayed and no food onboard. No apologies from Virgin. Extremely disappointing.

Flight was cancelled due to a mechanical fault - Virgin rebooked me on a flight 6 hours later so I cancelled and flew with another carrier

Following a marathon flight riddled by delays and changes from Santiago, Chile, my flight to Melbourne from Sydney was on schedule but I was transferred to the next flight. The reason by ticketing and the floor manager was I missed the entry to flight by one minute! That's right, the emphasised that if I was 1 minute earlier I would be on the flight. I asked what was the point them emphasising 1minute overdue and how that helped me or the situation. They didn't care at all. Replying that if it was one minute earlier they would've done something and smirking delivering the information. Australian's do call Australia home, Qantas calls Australian's suckers.

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Qantas cancelled my flight for no good reason and rebooked me into a middle seat.

The flight met my expectations. It left and landed on time

Flights delayed multiple times, travellers requests for updates ignored. Qantas continues to desatisfy travelling basics.

Better food, hotter coffee, otherwise it was a very smooth and reasonably comfortable flight.

Have watched 90% of the movies need to update more movies for the long haul

a constant reminder that you need to work harder so you can avoid this airline

Note that food has to be purchased in flight. No free food. And no entertainment in flight. So I’ve treated these two items as okay which, in this case, means neutral/not applicable.

My Dad needed assistance to board the plane. The Jetstar staff were excellent with him and made the experience a lot easier😁

No food taken so can't rate also no entertainment so can't rate.

Boarding was easy and unstressful, though the early "final call" was a bit off-putting. The crew were pleasant, and the seats were comfortable. The prices for food and drink were reasonable, apart from tea and coffee, where simple percolated coffee was charged at espresso prices. Deboarding was OK, though some Jetstar passengers appear to have a bad habit of pushing forward from their assigned rows, making it more difficult to get out for passengers that have paid a premium to sit up-front. Jetstar might want to look to address this to stop it from spreading.

I got to the airport earlier than I expected, and they let me change to an earlier flight with no trouble.

It was a super crowded time to travel out of Melbourne, but the flight was OK

Worst experience ever flying Melbourne to Phuket. 5 hours delayed! Didn’t land till 1am in the morning. Staff were rude and unhelpful

Plane was late leaving darwin so we didn’t get home till 1130pm 2nd time in a fortnight that has happened. Hard when you have to work the next day

Worst airline ever. No need to go into detail as everything is terrible. Do not do it - whatever the price.

How to Travel to the Whitsundays & Airlie Beach

The great news about the whitsundays is you can fly, drive, take a bus or ride a train to get here.

All those iconic attractions on your ‘must do’ list - the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island, Long Island or your very own island sailing adventure – are within easy reach.

When travelling to the Whitsundays, there are a few things you need to know, so here is our quick guide. And remember, you can always talk to our friendly team at AirlieBeach.com, the Whitsundays Central Reservations Centre.

Flying into the Whitsundays

There are two choices if you are travelling by air to the Whitsundays - Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine), which services the mainland and most of the Whitsunday Islands, and Great Barrier Reef Airport, on Hamilton Island. Both airports offer flights to and from most Australian cities.

Whitsunday Coast Airport

If your holiday is based in Airlie Beach – the main hub for travellers visiting the Whitsundays - you might wish to fly into Whitsunday Coast Airport, just south of Proserpine, and then use one of the many transfer services available to get to your accommodation (about a 30-40 minute drive).

To get from the airport, the best option is a shuttle service, which will take you right to your door. Shuttle services and limousines servicing the airport need to be pre-booked and our team at AirlieBeach.com can arrange this for you, right after you book your flight. There is also a taxi service available from the airport to Airlie Beach, extending through to Shute Harbour.

Hamilton Island also has a domestic airport (Great Barrier Reef Airport), which services visitors to the island itself and also the Whitsunday mainland via ferry transfer. Cruise Whitsundays’ ferries are timed to meet the plane arrivals and go via Daydream Island, arriving into the Port of Airlie Marina, in Airlie Beach. Mackay also has a domestic airport, servicing most Australian cities, 150km south of Airlie Beach.

Three airlines fly into Mackay and Hamilton Island - Virgin Australia – Qantas Link – Jetstar

By Road to the Whitsundays

The Whitsundays are very accessible by road and are just a 20-minute drive from the main arterial Bruce Highway, which connects visitors with Townsville and Cairns to the north, and Mackay and Brisbane to the south.

Several hire car companies operate in the Whitsundays – including Eurocar, Hertz and Avis - and usually arrangements can be made to pick up and leave cars wherever is convenient for you.

Camper Vans

You can also hire a campervan from the Airlie Beach ‘Wicked Campers’ depot, in Cannonvale.

Tourist Coach or Bus to Airlie Beach

There are bus services running the length of the Queensland coast that pass through Airlie Beach each day. These services run from Brisbane to Cairns and stop at most major towns and cities along the coastal route. We can assist you with coach bookings. Call or email our team for further information or to book your ticket. Two carriers drop off and pick up in the Whitsundays: Premier – Greyhound Australia

By Rail to the Whitsundays

Queensland Rail Travel offers a fast and comfortable option for getting to and from Proserpine, with the train station just a 20-minute drive from Airlie Beach. There are five northbound stops and five southbound stops each week at Proserpine station, then a connecting bus service will take you to Airlie Beach. Or for that special touch, you can pre-book a shuttle service or limousine with our team at AirlieBeach.com. We can also book Queensland Rail tickets for you.

How to get to Airlie Beach

Aerial view of Airlie Beach and harbour on a slightly cloudy day, Queensland, Australia

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the stunning  Whitsunday Islands  and the  Great Barrier Reef . It's fairly easy to get to with a number of travel options depending on where you're coming from.

The most convenient way to get to Airlie Beach is to fly to Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) in Proserpine. There are daily flights to/from Australia's major cities including Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Cairns. The airport is 12 miles from Airlie Beach (around a 30-minute drive).

You can take a taxi to Airlie Beach (approx. USD $65), jump on the airport shuttle ($14 one way, or $24 return), or arrange a private transfer with your hotel or tour operator.

Below are the average flight times:

  • Sydney - 2.5 hours
  • Melbourne - 3 hours
  • Brisbane - 1.5 hours
  • Cairns - 1 hour

You can also fly into the Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island. From here, you can take a ferry or high-speed catamaran to Airlie Beach. This option is probably better if you plan on using Hamilton Island as your base to explore the Whitsundays before heading across to the mainland.

There are no direct trains to Airlie Beach , but you can take the Spirit of Queensland which connects Brisbane and Cairns via Proserpine. From here, take the RailBus Coach to Airlie Beach. The train runs five times per week and stops at major towns and cities along the East Coast.

The journey to Proserpine takes about 15 hours from Brisbane and 9.5 hours from Cairns. It’s a semi-luxury train with sitting and sleeping berths, showers and onboard dining facilities.

You can drive to Airlie Beach via the Bruce Highway which connects the coastal towns and cities between Brisbane and Cairns. Once you arrive in Bowen or Proserpine, follow the signs to Airlie Beach via Shute Harbour Road. Below are the average driving times from popular cities along the East Coast (excluding stops):

  • Sydney - 22 hours
  • Byron Bay - 15 hours
  • Brisbane - 13 hours
  • Sunshine Coast - 12 hours
  • Townsville - 3.5 hours
  • Cairns - 8 hours

There's no public bus to Airlie Beach, but you can buy tickets with a private coach company such as Greyhound or Premier. They run southbound services from Cairns and northbound services from Brisbane with direct, return and hop-on/off tickets. It's a good option if you don't have a car and aren't on a tight schedule, or if you'll visit multiple places along the East Coast.

Melbourne to Airlie Beach inland road trip: Distance & best stops

Melbourne to Airlie Beach drive: Clermont to Mackay

After Clermont, head north past the Apsley State Forest on the Gregory Highway , but turn east along the Peak Downs Highway.

Fairly soon you’ll come to Wolfang Peak, a rocky outcrop that juts prominently above the grassland landscape. A 2.3km return walk will take you to the top for pretty nifty views.

A little further along in the Peak Range National Park are the Gemini Peaks – Mount Pollux and Mount Castor. These are remnant volcanic plugs jutting out above their surrounds.

Afterwards, the Peak Downs Highway enters dull coal mining country near Moranbah, but things get much more scenic in the Great Dividing Range around Epsom.

The Peak Downs Highway then passes between the Ben Mohr State Forest and Spencer Gap State Forest. The 5km return walk to the Spencer Gap Waterholes is the highlight here.

The highway goes into Mackay, the biggest city in the Whitsundays region. Highlights of Mackay include the crocodile-free Bluewater Lagoon pool, Blacks Beach and snorkelling cruises to the South Cumberland Islands.

Three great Mackay experiences to book in advance

  • (Highly recommended ✅ ) Whitsunday Islands boat cruise – with snorkelling and paddleboarding.
  • Cape Hillsborough sunrise tour – meet wallabies on the beach.
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Finch Hatton Gorge waterfalls tour .

Melbourne to Airlie Beach road trip: Proserpine and Airlie Beach

There’s also the less exciting Mount Martin National Park nearer the junction with the Bruce Highway.

Shortly afterwards comes another worthwhile detour to Cape Hillsborough National Park , where you can see kangaroos on the beach.

The road leading to Airlie Beach comes just after  Proserpine , where you can enjoy a  crocodile-spotting cruise  on the  Proserpine River . You’ll pass quieter  Cannonvale  on the way into Airlie.
