Guide to the 6-month passport rule — what is it?

It may sound trivial, but one of the best rules you can follow as an international traveler is to remember to check your passport validity before you book flights and hotels.

Why? Because the requirements for entry differ from country to country. In the midst of planning my 2024 travel, I realized my U.S. passport expires in April, which could mess with my plans abroad.

Thankfully, I use a travel checklist to avoid disruptions to my travel itinerary.

I immediately started the passport renewal process online and had my photo taken at my local Walgreens — although you can DIY your passport photo if you prefer — so I could send out my application as quickly as possible. I also opted to expedite the processing time for an additional $60 fee and sent my application on its way.

Note that certain countries deviate from the standard six-month requirement. These findings are also only related to passport validity dates — we're not covering visa requirements here. Those can vary depending on where you're going and where you're coming from.

Schengen countries in Europe

Many European countries are signers of the Schengen Agreement . As a result, they follow the 3+3 Rule, meaning your passport must be valid for three months beyond your three-month entry visa or for a total of six months, regardless of the duration of your initial stay.

While some Schengen countries only require passports to be valid for three months beyond your intended stay, others assume you may stay the full 90 days of your visa validity — thus the six-month time period.

The signers of the Schengen Agreement are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania will join the group March 31, 2024.

The countries listed below abide by the usual six months of passport validity unless otherwise noted.

When examining the rules, note that some countries have a slight distinction: They may require validity to be either six months from the date of entry or six months from the date of intended departure . For simplicity, we've taken the conservative approach and assumed that for any country with a six-month rule, like most of the ones above, you should ensure your passport is valid six months past the date of intended departure just in case.

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.

If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.

Traveling in Europe

If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:

• Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
• Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
• Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
• Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
• Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.

• Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
• Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.

An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.

HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?

• With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
• If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.

Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.

I don't need a visa for my trip to germany, but are there other things i should bear in mind.

You can only enter Germany if you have valid identity papers. On the planned date of departure from Germany, your passport has to be valid at least for another three months and it has to be issued within the last 10 years.

In certain cases, documents have to be presented that prove the purpose and circumstances of the visit.

Similarly, proof may also have to be provided that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself during your stay and to finance the return trip. The amount of funding depends on the type and length of stay. There are no fixed daily rates.

You are advised to take out health insurance before your trip which also covers return transport to your home country.

In cases of repeated entries and a longer duration foreigners who are not nationals of a European Union or European Economic Area state must bear in mind that visits to the Schengen area are restricted to 90 days in any period of 180 days.

If you still have your place of residence in Germany, please apply for your passport there. The German Embassy Windhoek is not responsible for such cases and can only render support in exceptional circumstances.

Should there be exceptional circumstances (such as a loss of passport during travel) that means that you cannot apply for a new passport in Germany, the German Embassy in Windhoek will be able to render support.

In addition to the passport fees, you will need to pay a non-responsibility recovery fee (Unzuständigkeitszuschlag) as well as other necessary fees such as telephone costs. The processing time will take longer , since the Embassy will need to receive an authorization from the responsible authority in Germany.

The fees for the passports need to be paid at the application in Namibian Dollar . The below mentioned fees will be converted into Namibian Dollar according to the exchange rate of the Embassy on that day. Payment can be done with cash or credit cards (Visa or MasterCard).

German passports are produced by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. Please expect a processing time of 8 - 10 weeks for your application. For an additional fee of 32,00 Euro you can apply for a regular passport also in the express procedure. Processing time then takes approx. 5-6 weeks.

Passports for applicants below 24 years are valid for 6 years .

Passports for applicants above 24 years are valid for 10 years.

Traveling in Germany within 6 months of passport expiration?

My family is taking a trip to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic the first 3 weeks of September. We are entering and exiting the region via Frankfurt. We leave in 9 days. Today I was looking through out travel documents to make sure everything is in order and noticed that my passport expires on February 15th, 2016 -- a little less than 6 months from now. In the back of my head I remembered hearing that some countries have stringent requirements that your passport must not be within 6 months of its expiration. So I did some research, and am reading conflicting things.

So some sites say 3 months/90 days is sufficient and others say that Schengen countries are changing to 6 months. I'm hoping its the former, obviously. The fact that the US State department page on Germany says 90 days give me hope but then again the state department press release I linked to above says sometimes Schengen countries require 6 months.

If I had discovered this sooner, I'd get my passport renewed, but with only 9 days to go (and only 5 business days) that doesn't seem feasible. Is there anything I can do to make sure I don't run into trouble on this trip?

We went to Germany in April with Passports that expired in August using your second quote above as the basis. We had no problem. Gary

It is not what the State Dept says that matters, it is what the passport inspector at the other end that decides that matters. Also, the airlines will look at your passport when you check in, if the gate agent got a memo from management that says not to let anyone on the plane that does not have 6 months left on their passport, you will not get on the plane. You can get it done using an expediting firm or getting an emergency appointment at a US Passport processing center. You still have time, so get cracking or you will be taking a chance that could be expensive to you if the dice don't fall your way. Edit: OK the German Missions in the United States have the following statement:

So you may be OK. But I renew at 6 months, since just because you are "planning" to return in 2 weeks, doesn't mean you have to. You could legally stay the full 90 days. And then there would be less than 3 months left on the passport. Italy does require 6 months and they are Schengen too.

I have an appointment scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Seattle passport processing center. Hoping they can get me squared away.

One thing I'm slightly concerned about: to apply for a new passport, I have to turn mine in...and is there any guarantee they'll be able to get me the new one in time? As things currently stand, it sounds like there's a possibility of a problem but I'll probably be OK...but I turn in my current passport and don't get the new one by 8/31, I'll definitely have a problem.

The SF office does same day. I would think Seattle could also. Be sure you bring everything they request on website, including air ticket.

I think you'll be fine getting your new one on time, especially since you already have your appt for this week. I made the same mistake once with less than two weeks to spare before departure and they expedited one for me in just 3 days. This was at the Los Angeles office. It cost me a small fortune but it was certainly less expensive than being turned away at the check-in counter at the airport. There is a nightmare story about this that was posted on this forum recently...I want to say it was in the Italy thread? You're going about this in the right way...just relax, tell them exactly what you need when you go in on Tuesday, and they'll take care of it. You aren't the only one!

How much did it cost? From what I've read I thought it only cost $60 extra to get it expedited, which doesn't sound like a small fortune...

I know, but I'm still kicking myself over this. Originally we were going to take this trip in June (at which point I had plenty of time left on my passport...) but then it got pushed back to September and I didn't think to check the expiration date on my passport when we rescheduled the trip :(.

I got my new passport today! They were able to do it in 2 days. It just cost the $60 fee.

We've been lucky to have an emergency passport office in Seattle for a long time, but it's also nice to see that the list of locations has doubled since several years ago.

These countries require six months on your passport before you travel

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Germany set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Germany’s embassy or consulate in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel company or airline for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

Passport validity requirements

If you plan to visit an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements .

Your passport must be:

• issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
• valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

Contact the German Embassy in the UK if you think that your passport does not meet both these requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

If you hold a valid residence permit, passport validity requirements are less strict. In this case, your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay (check the ‘expiry date’). Before applying to extend a German residence permit , you will need to renew an expired passport and present your new passport to the local Foreigners Authority (Ausländerbehörde).

Passport stamping

At German border control, you may need to:

• show a return or onward ticket
• show you have enough money for your stay

Check your passport is stamped if you enter or exit the Schengen area through Germany as a visitor. Border guards will use passport stamps to check you’re complying with the 90-day visa-free limit for short stays in the Schengen area. If relevant entry or exit stamps are not in your passport, border guards will presume that you have overstayed your visa-free limit.

You can show evidence of when and where you entered or exited the Schengen area, and ask the border guards to add this date and location in your passport. Examples of acceptable evidence include boarding passes and tickets.

Visa requirements

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

If you are travelling to Germany and other Schengen countries without a visa, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

To stay longer (for example, to work, study or for business), you must meet the German government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the German Embassy in the UK .

If you stay in Germany with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into and out of Germany . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food and drink into the EU

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries. There are some exceptions for medical reasons, for example certain amounts of powdered infant milk, infant food, or pet food needed for medical reasons. Taking money into Germany

British nationals have been arrested for having counterfeit currency. Only change money in banks or legitimate currency exchange offices.

Since Brexit , the rules on passport validity for British visitors to the European Union have tightened.

Gone are the days when you could travel to the EU at any point before your travel document expired; the UK is now a “third country”, with rules to match.

Added confusion has come in the form of the UK’s own HM Passport Office, which has continued to give out incorrect information regarding child passport expiry dates .

These are the key questions and answers based on EU rules.

What’s changed?

While the UK was in the European Union, British passports were valid up to and including their expiry date for travel within the EU. But since the end of the Brexit transition phase, British passport holders are treated as “third country nationals” with stipulations about passport issue and expiry dates – together with limits on the length of stay almost everywhere in Europe.

For the avoidance of doubt, these are not “new EU rules” – they were decided while the UK was in the European Union.

What is required for my passport to be valid?

The requirements for the Schengen Area – comprising most EU countries plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and a handful of micro-states – are crisply expressed on the Travel page of the European Union’s Your Europe site : “If you are a non-EU national wishing to visit or travel within the EU, you will need a passport:

• valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting,
• which was issued within the previous 10 years.”

(All children’s passports meet this latter condition – see below.)

For the avoidance of doubt, there is no problem travelling to Europe with a passport issued for over 10 years, so long as it is under 10 years old on the date of departure to the EU and will have three months remaining on the date of return.

Why the line about ‘issued within the previous 10 years’?

For many years, until September 2018, the UK had a generous policy of allowing credit for “unspent” time when renewing a passport, issuing documents valid for up to 10 years and nine months.

So a passport issued on 31 October 2012 could show an expiry date of 31 July 2023.

This was fine around Europe and the world for decade – until Brexit, whereupon a longstanding rule kicked in. For non-members of the EU hoping to enter the Schengen Area, a passport must have been issued in the past 10 years.

With a passport issued on 31 October 2012, regardless of the expiry date, you’re not allowed to enter the EU post-1 November 2022.

Until September 2018 the government appeared unaware of the problem. Once the issue was identified, the practice of giving up to nine months’ grace ended abruptly.

Are the “issued less than 10 years ago” and “valid for three months” rules combined?

No. There is no need to have a passport issued less than nine years, nine months ago. The two conditions are independent of one another.

The Migration and Home Affairs Department of the European Commission in Brussels told me: “Entry should be allowed to those travelling with passports issued within the previous 10 years at the moment of entry into the Schengen area.

“The condition that the passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years does not extend for the duration of the intended stay. It is enough if this condition is fulfilled at the moment of entry.

“To give a practical example, a non-EU traveller arriving on 1 December 2021 for a 20-days stay in the EU with a passport issued on 2 December 2011 and valid until 2 April 2022 will be allowed entry.”

If I get wrongly turned away, what are my rights?

For flights: you can claim denied boarding compensation (either £220 or £350, depending on the length of the flight) and associated costs – for example, booking another flight on a rival airline, or for wasted car rental and hotel expenses that cannot be reclaimed.

I’ve just read a report saying I need six months remaining for Europe?

Some news outlets, regrettably, continue to publish incorrect information. Ignore it.

Does that 10-year-plus rule apply anywhere else in the world?

No as far as I am aware. The concern around the date of issue is relevant only for travel to the European Union – not for the rest of the world.

For destinations outside EU, the only significant consideration is the expiry date. And for destinations such as Australia, the US and Canada, your passport is valid up to and including this date.

So with that passport expiring on 31 July 2023, you could be in New York until that very day (though you would need to get a daytime flight back to avoid your passport running out en route.

What about children?

Passports for under-16s are typically valid for five years (plus any extra credit). A child’s passport issued for five years and nine months is clearly within the 10-year limit, and there is no possibility of breaching that condition.

(During 2021, the Home Office’s defective passport checker stripped all extra credit, which was both wrong and unhelpful. The online checker has now been switched off.)

But beware of the three-months-remaining-on-exit rule, which children are more likely to fall foul of because of the shorter duration of their passports.

What about this 90/180 day rule?

For trips to the Schengen area (most EU nations plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and some small countries) British passport holders can stay a maximum of 90 days in any 180. That’s roughly three months in six.

it is tricky to explain, but I shall do my best. Imagine a calendar that stretches back almost six months from today. What happened more than 180 days ago is irrelevant. What counts is the number of days you were either inside (I) or outside (O) the Schengen Area in the past 180 days.

You can easily keep count on a calendar yourself, either printed or digital.

If “I” hits 90, you must leave that day and stay out for almost three months, to accumulate 90 “Os” in a row. Then you can go back in, for a maximum of 90 days.

During the course of a calendar year, it could work like this (assuming no travel to the EU in the previous six months).

• 1 January: enter the EU and stay for 90 days until the last day of March, when you must leave.
• 1 April: remain outside for 90 days, which takes you to 29 June.
• 30 June: enter the EU and stay for 90 days, until 27 September. Then leave.
• 28 September: remain outside the EU until 26 December.

For longer stays, some countries offer visas that allow British citizens to remain for months on end. If you get one of these, then the time spent in that country does not count towards the “90/180” rule – in other words, you can explore other EU countries with a fresh calendar.

What about non-Schengen EU members?

For British visitors to Ireland , there are no limits on passport validity. Indeed, a passport is not legally mandatory for British travellers to the republic, though some airlines insist on it.

Bulgaria, Cyprus and Romania have identical rules to the Schengen Area: passport issued in the past 10 years, and with three months validity remaining on the day of leaving the country. But time spent in any of these nations does not contribute to the “90/180” day total.

Blue Passport

What is a "Blue Passport"?

If you are recognised as a “refugee” (“ Flüchtling ”) or “asylum seeker” (“ Asylberechtigte * r ”) in Germany, you will be issued a so-called “travel document for refugees” ("Reiseausweis für Flüchtlinge"). The travel document is a replacement for the passport from your country of origin or the country you've fled to come to Germany. The “travel document for refugees” is also known as "Convention Pass" ("Konventionspass ") or "Blue Passport" ("Blauer Pass ").

Please note : As an individual entitled to asylum or recognised as a refugee, you cannot apply for a passport from your country of origin . If you do so or visit the embassy of your home country, in principle, you will lose your entitlement to asylum/refugee status and thus your right of residence in Germany.

What do I need to know?

You can obtain a “travel document for refugees” ("Bluer Pass")  if your right to asylum or refugee status has been recognised in Germany. According to  Article 28 of the Geneva Convention on Refugees , you are, in principle, entitled to a travel document. Only individuals who, for instance, have been convicted of membership of a terrorist organisation are not entitled to a travel document.

Those entitled to subsidiary protection or a national deportation ban cannot obtain a travel document for refugees. If that is the case, you must ask for a passport at your home country's embassy. If the embassy does not issue you a passport, you can apply for a Travel Permit for Foreigners („Reiseausweis für Ausländer“) at the relevant Immigration Office („Ausländerbehörde”). Please note : If you have been granted subsidiary protection or have a residence permit due to a national deportation ban  and  are appealing BAMF's decision, you  must not  visit your home country's embassy. If you do so, the BAMF assumes that you are not being persecuted in your home country.

The Blue Passport enables you to travel to all the countries which have signed the Geneva Refugee Convention, i.e. more than 100 countries, a list of which you can find on  fluechlingskonvention.de . To travel to many of these countries, however, you must apply for a visa in advance. Then the respective country will decide whether you must be issued an entry visa or not.

As someone who holds a Blue Passport, you must not travel to your country of origin  under any circumstances. If the Immigration Office or the BAMF finds out that you have visited your home country, your right to asylum or recognition as a refugee will be revoked, and you will lose your right of residence in Germany.

Please note : You do not have any claim to diplomatic or consular protection by Germany outside the German territory.

You can travel to the so-called “Schengen states” if:

• Your stay does not exceed 3 months and
• you do not work there.

You can find a list of current Schengen member states at  auswaertiges-amt.de.

In principle, your residence permit expires if you stay abroad for more than six months at a time. However, such a rule does not apply to people with a Blue Passport. That means,  as long as your Blue Passport is valid, your residence permit will remain valid.  So, you can stay out of Germany for more than 6 months if you wish so. But keep in mind that if you settle permanently in another country or reside there for longer term, that country will be responsible for your residence permit.

The local Immigration Office will issue your passport. In principle, you will receive it along with your residence permit. 

You have to pay for your travel document, even if you are receiving social benefits (e.g. from Job Centre). The amount you pay depends on your age and status and can be as high as €100.

You will also need a biometric passport photo (which you can take in a photo booth or photo studio), a proof of residence ( registration  or „Anmeldung“) and a document acknowledging your asylum rights or refugee status. Usually, the immigration authority takes  six to eight weeks  to issue your travel ID.

Since November 2007, the travel documents are provided with an electronic chip and are therefore called e-Travel Document or e-Pass. For more security, your data is stored electronically in a chip. That is why the Immigration Office takes your fingerprints before issuing a travel ID. This data can only be read with special devices and by authorities. Your fingerprints, in particular, are protected and can only be accessed by the countries that have received special access rights from Germany. You have the right to see this data on an e-Pass reader in the Immigration Office.

Your Blue Passport is valid as long as your residence permit. So, “Travel Document for Refugees” or “Blue Passport” is valid for about  three years . Afterwards, you have to apply for a new travel document.

Apply for a new Blue Passport, preferably two to three months before the expiration of your current passport. Find out more in our chapter " Residence Permit ".

In case you lose your passport, you must report this to the police immediately. Check our  police  chapter to learn how. In case you find your passport again, the police should be informed promptly. You will need to apply for a new passport at the local immigration office. You can find the Immigration Office responsible for you on  bamf.de .

If you move within Germany, you must have the new address entered in your documents (residence permit and Blue Passport). You can find out more about this in our chapter Registration .

Important : If you have a so-called "residence restriction" (“Wohnsitzzuweisung”), you may only move with the permission of the immigration authorities. You can learn more about this in our chapter " Looking for a flat " in the section "Can I move to another city or municipality?".

No. From a legal point of view, the EU Blue Card has nothing to do with the protection provided for refugees, and it is not a passport. The EU Blue Card is a residence permit for highly qualified individuals from non-EU countries who wish to work in an EU country and have already secured a position in a workplace. After your  right to asylum  or  refugee status  has been recognized by BAMF, you will receive a "Blue Passport". After that, you are  not permitted to obtain a passport from your country's embassy  or travel to your homeland; otherwise, you will lose your protection status and residence rights in Germany.

Travelling in general

There isn’t a specific answer to this question. This is because each country has its own entry requirements.

Always check the entry and exit requirements for all countries you’re going to visit before making your plans. Then check your passport to see when it expires. This will tell you whether you need to renew your passport yet.

All countries have their own entry requirements. Read the  travel advisories  to view the entry and exit requirements of each country.

Since these requirements can change, you may also check with the  Government of Canada office  of the country you visit.

You shouldn’t travel with a passport that will expire during your trip or shortly after your planned return. To avoid problems while travelling, you should get a new passport before leaving if your passport could expire around or during your travels.

Some countries won’t allow you to enter if your passport expires shortly after your planned return date. To find out more about entry and exit requirements, consult the:

• travel advisories
• Government of Canada office  of the country you will be visiting

You should make all travel arrangements in the name on your passport.

If the names don't match, you may have problems at border crossings or when boarding flights.

Check with the authorities in the destination country to find out if you need any other documents.

Travelling with children

We strongly recommend that your child carry a consent letter if they’re travelling abroad:

• friends or relatives
• only one parent/guardian

For the purposes of the consent letter, a Canadian child is defined as anyone who is under the age of majority (18 or 19, depending on the province or territory of residence).
