CPM in the world of YouTube?

To assess the efficiency of an advertising campaign, YouTube uses stats and formulae. CPM is a keystone of measurements and a foundation for further tests and conclusions.

CPM means an amount of money you can get for the promotional material that was placed on this website within your video. Let’s see the deeper essence of this concept and try to shed light on some discrepancies in its rates.

What is CPM?

While YouTube CPC means the amount of money that you get for every click on a certain ad, CPM is an abbreviation for Cost per Mille, where “mille” stands for a thousand views. Thus, you are paid each time when your ad reaches this mark. The more views the ad gets, the more money you earn. That’s why this metric is crucial for your YouTube channel monetization.

However, it’s not that simple: you won’t receive 100% of the promised revenue. YouTube takes a lion’s share of 45% (!) so that you get only $55 out of $100, for example.

Note: That it’s not a reason to give up, but to try to provide as many views as possible.

Keep in mind that the platform will mark a view only if an advertising video has been watched for longer than 30 seconds. The views that are made from mobile gadgets are also meaningless. Besides, you can use YouTube’s special calculator to predict your potential income and see the real picture.

CPM and RPM

CPM is a numerical definition to reflect the income that you share with YouTube. This entails another parameter – RPM (Revenue per Mille) which is used to calculate your personal income considering the platform’s retention. So, the amount of CPM is in direct proportion to RPM. Both metrics are important to assess your future profit. However, CPM is of great importance for advertisers and RMP is crucial for creators.

YouTube is not going to inform you about your possible RPM value, but one can handle this independently.

  • Open “Settings” in your AdSense account to check “Payments.” Look at the numbers for the last month.
  • Enter YouTube Analytics to see the number of views at the Monetized Playbacks (don’t look at the formal number of views because you should remember that not all of them are monetized).
  • Use the following formula to make calculations: Monthly income / Number of monetized views X 1,000.

For example, you earned $200 for the last month and managed to get 50,000 views. So, 200/50,000 x 1,000 = $4. That means you’ve got $4 for every 1,000 views.

NOTE: YouTube pays out 68% of AdSense revenue to its publishers.

How to find out CPM for your channel

It’s a challenge to calculate CPM YouTube ad rates because of its instability. The rates jump up and down all the time during the year. Mostly, the following factors determine the cost:

  • Audience type

Consecutively, the CPM rate depends on many factors, but it is still possible to calculate the value. The formula is similar to the RPM calculation model, but we use the number of people (audience) instead of the number of monetized views. The result is the price for every thousand impressions that an advertiser gets.

For example, an investment of $10,000 into an advertising campaign entailed 4,700,000 views. Thus, CPM is equal to ($10,000/4,700,000)x1000 = $2.13, which is the amount of money an advertiser should pay for a thousand of views. For example, the YouTube average CPM is $2.

Guide to Affiliate Marketing for Travel YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok

How to increase cpm of your channel.

Sometimes CPM rates crash and the situation becomes disappointing. That may happen because of the absence of due work with your audience. For example, if your followers are located in the Middle East, you can hardly expect high earnings for advertising swimming suits. In any case, there’s no need to discuss reasons for decreasing CPM rates, but it’s better to reveal how to enhance them.

Why you need monetized views

You may have a thousand subscribers, but still, don’t get a high income. Their number enhances awareness, popularity, and ranking, but not revenue. Monetization is required to engage the audience in viewing videos.

Note that to start monetizing your channel, you need to meet some requirements. For example, you should become a member of the Partner Program to monetize through Google AdSense. However, for this purpose, you have to have no less than 1,000 subscribers and have reached 4,000 hours of total watching time in the past twelve months:

How to increase the number of monetized views

The following hints are helpful for multiplying your monetized views.

  • Create unique original content. Uploaded clips from other sources are meaningless. You can use other people’s videos for commentary purposes only.
  • Attract followers by natural means (don’t buy them for bonuses/money or in exchange for your own subscription) to make your channel grow. This practice doesn’t work. No artificial inflations are allowed.
  • Get traffic in legitimate ways by means of relevant keywords and tags, sharing your videos on social platforms, etc. Bots and other spam tactics are forbidden.
  • Publish respectable content and avoid placing videos that promote violence, drugs, and so on.
  • Keep your channel active at all times. That means you should upload content regularly. Breaks that are over half a year can provoke demonetization and closure.
  • Audit your channel every now and then. Go to YouTube Analytics and check metrics, such as subscribers-to-views ratio, engagement analysis, audience retention, statistics of suggested videos and watch time of the video. If one of your videos gains a lot of views, try to duplicate its success with other videos.
  • Run competitor research to find their strengths and weak points and refine your strategy accordingly.

Also, here are some recommendations to improve your video’s quality:

  • Introduce valuable information or entertainment.
  • Think of meta tags (title and description) and make them relevant to the content.
  • Try to avoid creating clips that are too long to ensure high audience retention.
  • Include a timestamp in the description and highlight the main topics of the video.
  • Add subtitles and closed captions to improve user experience.
  • Make your videos bright with exotic locations, advanced visual effects, etc.
  • Make a compelling  YouTube intro  that can significantly boost viewer engagement and retention from the first seconds, signaling content quality and relevance, which in turn can enhance CPM by attracting higher-value ads targeted at engaged audiences.
  • Upload end screens to motivate users to watch more videos from your channel.
  • Use playlists to facilitate navigation among your videos for the users and encourage them to watch more.
  • “Decorate” clips with various frames. Use the diversity of angles.
  • Use interesting and suitable soundtracks.

YouTube CPM rates

YouTube CPM rates

As to not harbor false hope about the cost of YouTube ads, study YouTube stats before creating and placing content on your channel. It will help understand the current situation correctly. Besides, it would have been nice to analyze your direct competitors to see their channels’ development.

CPM rates depending on the country

CPM is also dependable on the geographical location. To make more money, target video in one of the top countries with premium rates .

The list of the countries with the highest YouTube advertising CPM are rather stable, but some countries can trade places from year to year. So, here’re the leaders:

  • United Arab Emirates
  • New Zealand

A map of the top ten countries with the highest CPM rates on YouTube

Such countries as Ukraine, Serbia and some others usually have the lowest CPM rates.

CPM rates depending on the type of video

We’ve already revealed the fact that YouTube advertising costs are tied to content quality. However, some external factors are not dependable on the creator’s efforts. For example, if comparing educational and entertaining content, the first boasts higher CPM rates. In this case, CPM is based on the niche.

Why is the type of video extremely meaningful? The main reason is that video advertising is closely linked to consumer demand. To clarify the nuances, let’s consider the example of the UK – one of the countries with the highest CPM rates ($3–$6 on average).

Plenty of British publishers use the Ad Exchange platform to sell media advertising. Its CPM rates are based on a set of factors (location, engagement, etc.) and reach the range of $3–$8. The publisher can choose the type of ad to display. And, the network offers in-stream video ads that can be skipped but saves the same revenue for an impression at the same time.

Pre Roll ads are widespread and rather common. This is a message that you have to watch before the content. In addition, they can be very irritating, because there’s no option to skip it immediately. However, presenting them in a witty and entertaining manner, you can reach CPM of $3–$8. The same is true for Mid Roll ads that are played in the middle of the clip.

Outstream video ads are displayed within the limited ad space between images and other pieces of content. They boast the CPM rate of $4–$8. Such ads are extremely viewable because they have no strict placement.

Native videos can bring $5 or more because they are not annoying and they’re created within the channel concept.

Is CPM the only way to monetize your channel?

There are more ways of getting money from your channel if ads are not attractive to you.

  • Sell products

This method is effective if you’ve managed to build your brand. In this case, you can sell t-shirts, bags, cups, and other merchandise. Besides, you can create and sell original educational courses, e-books, and classes. It’s possible to promote products and increase sales when your goods are presented on Etsy and other similar platforms.

A screenshot of the Etsy homepage featuring different types of products

  • Affiliate marketing

It’s also profitable to recommend goods – not directly – but through the affiliate links to get a decent reward after the customer has placed an order. For this purpose, you should add the associated website to your channel and then get an affiliate link. The next step implies pointing the audience to a URL on your own resource that will redirect them to the affiliate’s website. The last thing is to insert affiliate links in the content. You can look for a proper program, especially for YouTubers, or explore the travel niche.

You can earn on flights, hotels, and other services that are 100% needed by travelers, such as excursions, with partner programs from well-known brands like GetYourGuide, Viator, Tiqets, and many others. After all, people don’t need to go far to visit the sights or listen to interesting stories from a guide. They can be a tourist in their hometown or explore the suburbs. To earn on these services, join the Travelpayouts partnership platform for free today.

  • Branded content

The main task is to produce the content your target customers will enjoy watching. They should get a value that will be increasing from one video to another. For example, you decided to create a series about home renovation. The first clip can deal with building, the second can show the best ways of decoration, then you can tell about gardening, and so on. This example is a bit schematic, but the idea is to involve your audience in watching videos.

  • Channel memberships

Take advantage of paid subscriptions for your channel and offer extra benefits to your subscribers. For example, this can be exclusive content, support, custom emojis and stickers, live chat access, and so on. This option is open to YouTube creators who are part of the YouTube Partner Program, have at least 1,000 subscribers, make content that is not labeled as “created for children”, and meet a few more criteria.

Making the best of your YouTube channel in 2024

To grow a channel, remember to follow the platform rules and restrictions and check with YouTube advertising prices and statistics. Once all the necessary tools have been integrated and promotional means used, they will make your channel more efficient and successful, so that monetizing it in the most profitable way will be a piece of cake.

The Truth About How Much Money Travel Vloggers Make on YouTube, and the Next Generation Changing the Game

I HAD a fascinating conversation with a mate’s son recently. He is 11 years old, a tween, and a big user of social media and YouTube in particular. He told me of his favorite travel channels, and in the process, opened my eyes to the whole next generation of travel vloggers. These millennials grew up with the internet, and they understand social media better than anyone. It is a joy to see that the dream of traveling the world while making money from videos is now well and truly a career path.

I found a unique tool recently called the ‘ YouTube Money Calculator ‘ and thought it would be interesting to work out roughly what the top YouTube travel channels actually earn from YouTube ad revenue. To do this I set a medium CPM of $1.90 — $2.00 USD. Of course, CPM’s will be higher at particular times of the year, but data shows CPM rates are not increasing. I used an average for the travel industry in the last 30 days.

So let’s first look at the new crop of travel vloggers, who are killing it with the tween and under 25 demographic:

By looking at these figures, we can see that only the very top echelon of travel channels on YouTube are making any reasonable coin. For the others, it’s a hell of a lot of work for a small reward — especially when you take into account that google takes a hefty 45%-cut!

The current top travel channel on YouTube is FunForLouis . His videos are positive, aspirational, daily and collaborative. He is very clever in that everywhere he goes, he collaborates with other top YouTubers, thus getting introduced to their subscribers and vice versa.

From a production point of view, I find his work fascinating. He uses small point-and-shoot cameras, which means he can pretty much shoot anywhere without attracting too much attention and he gets the soundtracks to his videos by approaching musicians on SoundCloud and asking them to provide their tracks gratis. And if you watch a lot of the other travel vloggers videos (Ben Brown’s, for example), you’ll see they all have a fairly similar formula — longish videos that capture their daily life, driving, meals, coffee and adventures. It’s all rather safe, happy, never controversial and not surprisingly advertiser-friendly.

How to set up a successful YouTube travel channel

For someone who originally found ‘vlogging’ quite confronting, I’m amused by how easily the next wave take to talking to a camera, particularly when they ‘cockblock’ each other with duelling cameras capturing the same scene.

Getting back to my mate’s son. These channels show him that he too can circumvent traditional media employment avenues, and with a camera, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic, explore the world! And the channels that are doing the best are the ones that sell this dream, showing viewers a lifestyle they too can aspire to.

Ray William Johnson was one of the first YouTube channels to have success using formulaic video. I find it fascinating, and maybe a bit disheartening as a filmmaker, to realize producing the same video format, again and again, seems to work on YouTube. Viewers seem to appreciate knowing exactly what they are getting.

But, as the figures above show, most travel vloggers really aren’t ‘living the dream’ and need to find other revenue avenues to survive on the road. Collaborations with travel business can provide this additional income and is a win/win situation for both parties. But what do business need to consider when preparing an online video marketing campaign?

Travel business and travel vloggers — Perfect match?

A travel brand or business looking at using travel video vloggers to help market their wares really need to first determine their own demographic. There is no point for example, for a luxury cruise company, to team with a travel vlogger, whose main demographic is 11-year-old boys!

In fact, if you look at the audience of Top 10 Travel Influencers on YouTube , a large majority have most of their audience under 19 years old! This would suggest that for most travel business, particularly those targeting wealthy older lifestylers, searching for influencers outside the current crop of popular channels is necessary, given YouTube’s skewing towards younger audiences.

It is also important, despite the popularity of branded content, to make it very clear of any arrangements one has with travel vloggers. Recently biscuit brand Oreo learnt this the hard way, being rapped over the knuckles by the UK advertising watchdog.

If a travel vlogger features your product or business on their channel for payment, I don’t think a business has any right telling them how to do it! They know their viewers and would have the best idea what works. If a business or marketing manager has an idea for what they want done, a better option may be to get a video produced and set up their own channel.

Other options: Doing video in-house

I recently helped initiate such a set up for Yealands Family Wines (New Zealand’s Wine Producer of the Year, 2014) They decided to branch into producing videos after hearing a talk from a California social media expert who stated a business must now operate as if they are running their own magazine, keeping customers up to date with the latest products and happenings. Yealands decided to produce weekly videos, featuring their staff, talking about their wines, sustainability program and upcoming events. They found the videos provided another arrow to their social media quiver.

https://www.YouTube.com/watch?v=H8OA7kGk3ZM

Yealands were never aiming for a viral video hit. They wanted to produce a lot of content, showing viewers who they were and how they did things differently. Many of the videos like the one featured have a long shelf life, whereas others, such as yearly tasting notes, can be updated fairly easily.

This is a clever way to run a video campaign, to not just put your eggs all in one basket, but to produce numerous videos.

Land and improvements comprise real estates, such as buildings, furnishings, roads, structures, and utility systems. Property rights provide ownership of land, modifications, and natural resources such as minerals, plants, animals, and water, among other things.

If you are a realtor, you may use your channel to gain more clients by highlighting local businesses and community events.

37. Dancing

Dancing siblings Ranz and Niana started making videos in 2011 and they are now one of the highest-earning stars worldwide!

They have their little sister, Natalia, joining them too. People would love to see you pursue your passion. Whatever the genre is, dancing is an attractive way to get more followers.

38. Space, Cosmos

Another interesting thing to look into is space; be it about the possibility of aliens, Mars expedition, or UFOs. However, be sure that what you publish online are verified facts from high authority sources.

The obsession to home decoration rose on the onset of the pandemic as people have been spending more time at home than going out.

You can share your home setup and bedroom styles with the public to give them more ideas on how they are going to beautify theirs. However, you do not necessarily have to limit yourself to decorations at home; you can expand to office furnishing, classroom ornament, and many more.

40. Vlogging

This is by far the easiest to come up with. Many present YouTubers simply make content about random things in their lives. If you can create something unique from the others, most likely, you are to excel.

Here’s a quick tip:

One of the most popular vlog ideas is videos such as “Day in a life of…”

Day in the Life of a Young Entrepreneur – The REAL Routine

41. Technology

Tools and machines that can be utilized to solve real-world problems are referred to as technology, a general term that refers to simple instruments like a crowbar or wooden spoon to more complicated devices like a space station or particle accelerator.

Narrow it down and build your YouTube channel about technology niche.

42. Food, Recipes, Cooking

Apparently, you might not need to join famous cooking shows to showcase your world-class dishes. While a lot of people are on the stage of trying to perfect their cuisines and learn about new ones, a YouTube channel dedicated to assisting and inspiring them is an effective way of garnering views. You may share some tips or a detailed procedure on how each step should look like.

43. Social Issues

It’s important to keep yourself and your audience updated on social issues. You utilize YouTube not only for fun and entertainment but also for information dissemination.

As long as everything you publish is a verified fact, there is no harm in sharing your sentiments about it, and encourage a healthy discussion among your followers as well.

44. Movie Critic

Create a YouTube channel and represent yourself as a movie critic. Create movie reviews without spoils and engage your audience in that way. You might be surprised how many people search for movie reviews.

Furthermore, YouTube CPM is quite high for that niche, so you will earn a decent amount of money.

45. Album Ratings

Similar to food and movie reviews, you can also add your favorite albums, and the most sensational ones to your list. Because music is limitless, you can do reviews endlessly.

To make you more appealing, perhaps having a musical background is necessary so you don’t just bluff things randomly.

If you are musically inclined, you may make song covers of your favorite bands and post them online. Especially if you have the talent for singing, you can have millions of viewers in no time if they find you unique and your songs relatable.

Being too serious about the content is boring. It’s good to add splices of humorous topics adding life to the videos. Get your wit and humor ready!

48. “Favorites”

You can start your YouTube career by sharing your favorites. Just favorites for anything.

In that way, you create your unique image of who you are. People value honesty more than anything. They do not like pretentious people trying to be perfect online. In addition, you also give them ideas about things you put as your favorite.

49. Video Reactions

SSSniperwolf , a famous french YouTuber publishes reaction videos everyday. She watches random TikTok videos and short films and then she films herself watching it.

That way, her viewers can see her actual reaction while she also makes her remarks from time to time.

Random Acts Of Kindness That Restored Faith In Humanity

This niche is highly relatable with other finance niches too. Create videos by sharing main tips for people who will take loans.

Create videos like: “ Why You Should Finance Your Car ” or “ Reduce your Interest on Loan ” or similar. If you are an expert in this field, start your YouTube channel around this niche and then expand in finances in general.

Why Are CPMs so Different Between Videos?

When you make YouTube videos, your videos become available for advertisers to use for ad placement. However, each time someone sees or clicks on an advertiser’s ad, they must pay a set fee.

The price they pay is decided by the amount of competition who want to place advertising on their films. They must compete for the most outstanding fee for their advertising to be broadcast.

The more competition there is, the more expensive it is to advertise.

The Importance of YouTube Niches with High CPM

YouTube is a compelling advertising channel with over two billion monthly active viewers. If you’re a content creator, there are many ways to profit from the network.

If marketers pay to display adverts on your films, you can enhance revenue through CPM. It is a strong indicator that your content is valued, and it can help you identify firms with whom you might wish to collaborate in the future.

CPM is an essential indicator for determining which of your videos are most helpful to advertisers as a YouTube artist. It is a piece of crucial information because advertising is YouTube’s principal source of revenue.

A portion of the money spent on your video is paid to you by advertising. Therefore, you earn more money when an advertiser spends more on an ad.

CPM is highly essential because it depends on how much advertisers are willing to spend rather than how much money you earn.

On average, you could earn $0.18 from YouTube per ad view . Also, note that CPM could change according to viewers’ countries and video language.

Youtube CPM & RPM Rates by Country 2023 [Updated]

Published by Himal on August 1, 2023 August 1, 2023

Youtube CPM RPM

YouTube debuted its Partner Program ( YPP ) in May 2007, a system based on AdSense that allows the video’s uploader to share the revenue generated by advertising on the platform.

Youtube Revenue Share : YouTube receives typically 45 percent of the advertising revenue from videos in the Partner Program, with the uploader receiving the remaining 55 percent.

The YouTube Partner Program has over a million members.

According to sources, a pre-roll commercial on YouTube (one that appears before the video begins) costs advertisers $10 per 1000 views on average.

However, other adverts besides pre-roll ads are less expensive and appear more frequently on the site.

But, how much money can one make on YouTube? It relies on a variety of things.

Factors Affecting YouTube Earnings:

The main factors that affect the revenue or earnings of a user on youtube are:

  • RPM (Revenue Per Mille)

  • Content Niche

What is Youtube RPM?

Revenue Per Mille (RPM) is a measure that shows how much money you as a publisher made for every 1,000 video views. Ads, channel memberships, YouTube Premium income, Super Chat, and Super Stickers are all RPM’s revenue sources.

What is Youtube CPM?

What are the Average CPM and RPM Rates on Youtube?

What is the Good RPM on Youtube?

As I have mentioned earlier, RPM depends upon a slew of factors. There is no such thing as “Good RPM” but if we average the RPM rates of all countries and niches, we can get a good range.

$3 is the good average RPM on youtube for most of the users.

How to increase RPM on Youtube?

When RPM rates fall, the scenario gets discouraging. This could be due to a lack of due diligence with your audience. For example, if your followers are in the Middle East, you can’t expect to make a lot of money. In any event, there is no need to analyze the reasons for lower RPM rates; instead, it is preferable to reveal how to improve them.

CPM is also dependable on geographical location. To make more money, target video in one of the 10 countries with premium rates:

Wrapping It Up

So you fancy yourself a content creator and  YouTube  is your platform of choice? Well, how much are you earning for every 1,000 views?

This is your YouTube CPM, and video creators need to know how it works.

In this post, we’ve laid out all the must-know information to get the most from advertisers, including answers to pressing questions like:

  • How Do You Calculate CPM on YouTube?
  • What Hurts My YouTube CPM and How Can I Improve it?
  • How Can I Monetize My Channel Beyond CPM?

Time to get into it!

What Is YouTube CPM?

CPM stands for cost per mille (which translates to 1,000 in Latin, Italian, and French).

CPM is the cost an advertiser will pay for every 1,000 impressions, or “views”,  their ad receives on YouTube.

It can be used interchangeably with CPT, which stands for cost per thousand.

YouTube gives  55%  of this ad money to content creators.

Video creators should pay attention to CPM because it identifies which topics advertisers find the most valuable and which topics you should be creating content about.

An icon supports an explanation of the ways in which researching YouTube CPM rates can help inform a YouTuber’s content strategy.

Ads are your best friend for making  money on YouTube . Knowing which videos have the most potential plays a crucial role in becoming a  full-time video creator .

An image compares the main difference between YouTube CPM and RPM for video creators.

It’s important for video creators to pay attention to both CPM and RPM, but for different reasons.

CPM is the number that advertisers are most concerned with. It tells them how much it costs to run their ad on a video.

RPM is your revenue per mille. It gives video creators an accurate amount for how much they will be paid for running ads. It’s a lot lower than CPM because it deducts YouTube’s fees.

Understanding the difference between these terms will help you better measure your earnings.

So, How Do You Calculate CPM on YouTube?

Everyone wants to know how much they’ll be making from their videos and YouTube’s CPM calculations are pretty simple.

An image displays the formula for determining YouTube CPM rates.

You can determine how much your video will make from YouTube ad revenue by rearranging these inputs.

(Total views / 1,000) x CPM = Total revenue

So, if your video receives 50,000 views and the CPM is $10, then the total revenue will be $500.

YouTube will deduct their 45% fee and pay you $275, but you’re on your own for paying taxes.

Well, Who Has the Highest YouTube CPM?

Some niches on YouTube are more profitable than others due to the number of views their videos get and how competitive the advertisers are.

Some of the most profitable YouTube CPM rates by niche include:

Just to name a few.

Countries with the most profitable Youtube monetization rates are:

Whether you’re planning a new series, doubling down on what works, or exploring new content territories, knowing your potential earnings can guide your journey on YouTube.

Tell Me, What Hurts My YouTube CPM and How Can I Improve It?

There’s more to managing a successful YouTube channel than simply picking a niche with a high CPM.

You also need to be aware of what can hurt your YouTube CPM and how to avoid these pitfalls.

There are a few factors to consider.

Factors to Improve CPM

Safe content.

If you want your content to be eligible for ads and attract high-paying advertisers, you need to make content that brands want to be associated with.

One way to do this is by keeping your content in the PG-13 range. If your content is too mature, advertisers will likely avoid it to steer clear of controversy.

Audience Age

If your video’s target market is children or your channel primarily produces Made for Kids content , then it’ll bring your YouTube revenue down more than if you target adults.

The reason for this is that YouTube is limited in the amount of personal data it can gather from minors. In turn, advertisers will target markets where they can better analyze their results.

A young girl engaging with kids' content on a tablet while recording herself for YouTube Kids, showcasing a modern approach to interactive learning and content creation made for kids.

Geolocation

Your CPM will also be affected by the location of your viewers. Countries have different CPM averages based on the number of advertisers bidding for that area.

Hypothetically, the videos you make for U.S. viewers might have a lower CPM than videos targeting German viewers.

These rates are subject to change, so you’ll need to stay up to date on which areas have a high CPM.

Seasonal Changes

Some niches see high activity during different times of the year.

For instance, if you conduct product reviews, then you’ll likely see a spike in activity at the end of the year when people look for  gift ideas .

Or if you’re in the fitness niche, you might see spikes in views and CPM at the beginning of the year, thanks to New Year’s resolutions.

But How Can I Monetize My Channel Beyond CPM?

Since  ad revenue  is erratic, you’re probably wondering how you can stabilize your income.

Switching to a  membership platform  where you own your content is the perfect way to get out from under the thumb of advertisers.

Hosting content on your own website creates opportunities to:

  • Create a  subscription model  for viewing content.
  • Sell branded merch or products .
  • Join new affiliate markets.
  • Sell ads  and keep more of the profit.

Ultimately, having your own platform gives you the freedom to create the content you want while earning a reliable, scalable income from your audience through subscriptions.

Understanding YouTube CPM is important for video creators regardless of how long you’ve been creating videos.

FAQs About YouTube CPM

Have more questions about YouTube CPM? We have answers.

Your YouTube ad revenue is subject to a number of factors. Some niches see seasonal changes throughout the year, meaning advertisers are less likely to buy YouTube ads when views are less likely to convert to sales.

YouTube CPM is the price advertisers pay for the ad. Your RPM is lower than the CPM because it deducts the fees YouTube applies for using its platform.

You can boost your RPM by creating evergreen content that is safe for viewers of all ages. The video will be more likely to stay  monetized  throughout the year and your views will stay consistent.

Travel content takes off on YouTube

What do Kobe Bryant, Disneyland and WestJet Airlines have in common? They're all featured in some of YouTube's most-viewed travel videos. In recent years, online video has proven to be a powerful channel for information, education and entertainment, particularly in the travel and hospitality industry, where we've seen impressive growth. According to a recent study Google conducted with Ipsos MediaCT, two out of three U.S. consumers watch online travel videos when they're thinking about taking a trip. What exactly are travelers looking for? What's popular? What content are they watching? Here's what we found.

Travel content has proliferated as people around the world share their experiences and seek inspiration for their next adventure. Every month, more than one billion people visit YouTube to watch more than six billion hours of video, making YouTube an ideal place to explore how travelers interact with video content. 1 According to a recent study Google conducted with Ipsos MediaCT, two out of three U.S. consumers watch online travel videos when they're thinking about taking a trip. 2 But what are travelers looking for? What's popular? What content are they watching? To find out, we analyzed aggregated and anonymized views of travel content on YouTube in the U.S. from early 2012 to early 2014. For the purposes of this research, we define "travelers" as those individuals who engage with or search for travel content on Google.com and/or YouTube. Overall, our findings have big implications for marketers looking to connect with travelers, regardless of category.

Videos influence travel decisions

YouTube data shows that travelers are spending more time watching online videos than ever before, with views of travel-related content up 118% year over year (YoY). According to the data, travelers are increasingly using mobile devices to consume travel-related videos anytime and anywhere; in 2013, mobile devices accounted for roughly 30% of all travel video views, with mobile viewing up 97% on smartphones and 205% on tablets, YoY. 3

Across devices—desktop and mobile—travelers are consuming travel-related videos around the clock. Nearly half are viewed during prime time (3:00—10:00 p.m. PST). 4 While desktop users tend to watch videos throughout the day, smartphone and tablet users tend to tune in during the evening hours.

What's piquing their interest? Eighty-eight percent of YouTube travel searches focus on destinations, attractions/points of interest or general travel ideas. 5

Much like the seasonality we see in the industry overall, travel search activity on YouTube peaks in July, with smaller spikes in March and October. While a large percentage of Google.com travel searches are brand specific and based on purchase-intent activity, searches on YouTube generally occur earlier in the travel-planning process.

Compelling content grabs travelers' attention

While travel watchers on YouTube are interested in community-generated content, the majority of travel-related views (67%) are for brand or professionally released videos. In fact, views of branded videos are up 394% YoY, and we see companies with a strong brand presence, such as Turkish Airlines, Disney Parks & Resorts and Expedia, making the most of this opportunity. 6

Travel Video Views by Content Type

Viewership across travel categories increased significantly YoY. While most are tuning in to watch videos about tourist destinations and attractions (40% of the total travel views), the largest growth can be seen in the cruises and charters category, up an impressive 262%. 7 This rise is due, in large part, to an increase in videos from companies such as Carnival Cruise Lines, Viking River Cruises and Princess Cruises.

Primary Categories of Travel Videos on YouTube

Travelers are looking to sustain a connection

Travelers want to do more than just watch videos on YouTube; they want to connect with creators and brands. In 2014 year to date, subscriptions to top travel channels on YouTube have increased 106% YoY. 8 And these subscribers watch 86% longer per view than nonsubscribers do. 9

They're also extremely interested in hearing real-life stories. Nearly half of the travel subscriptions are to vlogs (video blogs) that feature personal travel experiences.

Percent of Travel Channel Subscriptions by Format

Source: YouTube Data, March 2014, United States.

Travel vlogs, in fact, receive 4x more social engagement (likes, comments, shares, favorites and subscriptions) than other types of travel content on YouTube. 10 Travelers tend to find them more engaging on a per-view basis.

People of all ages subscribe to YouTube travel content. Fifty percent of travel channel subscribers are aged 25 to 64, while 38% fall in the 18 to 24 age range. 11 The younger audience tends to favor travel vlogs, suggesting they have more of an interest in "authentic" content. Perhaps they're living vicariously through their fellow YouTubers, or, at the very least, getting inspired to travel.

The 25-to-64-year-olds seem to be interested in a broader range of content relevant to frequent travelers. Often these are videos associated with decisions further down the travel purchase path, such as brand information, reviews and tips.

Travel Channel Subscribers by Age Group

Going beyond travel content

It's not all about travel for these YouTube visitors, though. Three in four come to watch videos related to their interests, hobbies or particular topic. 12 Travelers often watch content in categories closely related to travel, such as restaurants, spas and food and drink. Compared with the average YouTube user, travelers are 18x more likely to watch videos about restaurants, for example. 13

As we can see from the chart below, they're also interested in viewing videos about categories tangential to travel such as finance, extreme sports, home and garden, and autos and vehicles. Interestingly, they're less likely to engage with content about computer and video games, comics and animation, and hair care.

Likelihood of Watching Videos in Other Categories

Travel videos drive brand buzz

Viral videos aren't just for the twerkers, laughing babies and anything animal related (for those "aww" moments). There's virality in the travel category as well. That's because travelers, like any other YouTube users, enjoy sharing their favorite videos with friends and family.

Looking at travel videos that have gone viral (defined as content created to drive buzz that's not overly transactional and generated 500,000 views or more), we can see that airline companies account for most of the views (76%). 14 Turkish Airlines'  "Kobe vs. Messi" series, Virgin America's "#VXSafetyDance" and WestJet's "Christmas Miracle: Real Time Giving"  are great examples of videos that are engaging, fun and, at times, touching. Airlines have embraced video as a powerful differentiation tool, one that allows their brands to stand out and be creative with a range of topics.

Nineteen percent of viral video views come from destinations, which include brands such as Disney Parks & Resorts. Two standout examples from Disney Parks are "Grumpy Cat Finds Her Disney Side" and "Disneyland Musical Marriage Proposal."

While a viral video can rack up millions of views (if you're lucky), views are just one measure of a video's success. Shares, subscribers gained and other online actions are important as well.

Implications for marketers

Across industries, advertisers are increasingly embracing online video to drive awareness and engagement, and this trend is only expected to accelerate. For travel advertisers, online video is a powerful way to convey excitement about a destination, product, service or brand. From 2012 to 2013, uploads of travel-related videos (both brand/professionally released and community generated) grew by 190%, and growth in travel video uploads overall outpace those of other major categories on YouTube. 15

Here are a couple of brands that have recently embraced the video opportunity and found success:

Key findings

Our research revealed that travelers:

  • Spend more time than ever watching videos on YouTube
  • Use YouTube as a primary source for travel inspiration
  • Watch travel videos across devices
  • View content across all of YouTube's travel categories
  • Ages 18 to 24 subscribe to content focused on inspiration for future travel (video blogs)
  • Ages 25 to 64 subscribe to content to help them plan current travel (reviews, travel brands and travel networks)
  • Watch video content in other categories during travel research (restaurants, spas and beauty services, finance, extreme sports, and cooking and recipes)

The bottom line

As digital video becomes an even bigger part of the traveler's journey, it's increasingly important for advertisers to seize the opportunity. A strong video strategy can help brands reach, inspire and engage today's digitally savvy traveler in more ways than ever before.

The Best Travel Vloggers on YouTube in 2022

If you’re anything like me, your YouTube home feed includes a lot of travel stories, with food and travel vloggers, around the world explorers, van life channels, and outdoor adventurers.

Watching travel videos helps me decide where to travel next in the world, and what exactly to do once I get there.

In person travel around the world is difficult with the pandemic right now, so I’ve loved watching travel adventures virtually from my favorite YouTubers. It’s a wonderful way to mentally escape the stress and uncertainty of the last year.

YouTube has more than 2 billion (yes, that’s billion with a b ) monthly logged in users. If you’re a prospective travel vlogger, getting your videos on YouTube can be as easy as filming a video, editing with a video editor , and uploading. Because getting started on YouTube can be so simple, that’s meant plenty of vloggers, with interesting stories to tell, are on the platform.

Many of my favorite vloggers introduce viewers to bucket list travel adventures around the world, while others stay closer to home.

Several travel bloggers on this list, like Kara and Nate, made the transition from around-the-word travel videos to van life during the pandemic. Others have bought and renovated isolated cabins, while others continue their adventures locally.

I enjoy watching their current adventures, but it’s also a great time to dig back in the archives and watch older videos. I even check out a few classic travel TV shows from time to time!

The Best Travel YouTube Channels

Check out some of our favorite YouTube travel channels. We think these are the some of the best travel vloggers on YouTube right now.

Kara and Nate 2.1 Million YouTube Subscribers

I just found Kara and Nate’s channel in the last year. It’s fantastic, and I wish I’d found it sooner! Kara and Nate are a husband and wife team from Nashville Tennessee, who traveled to 100 countries before travel slowed down in 2020.

The production quality of this channel is fantastic, with high quality videography, and great audio as well. These days, they’re making content driving through the USA in a van, with plenty of stops at interesting accommodations and attractions along the way.

Favorite video: We Slept Outside in Antarctica

Eamon and Bec 782K YouTube subscribers

Eamon and Bec are a Canadian couple that I started watching when they were travelling around Europe and Morocco in their self converted Sprinter van. There’s plenty of gorgeous content on here about their travels, their vegan recipes (they even have a vegan cookbook), and life on the road.

These days, Eamon and Bec are vlogging about renovating their cabin in the woods of Ontario, Canada.

Favorite travel video: How to Winter in the Canadian Wilderness

Foresty Forest 245K YouTube subscribers

Foresty Forest is the real deal, if you’re interested in bicycle touring, ascending mountains, and the great outdoors. His crockpot makes frequent appearances, with simple home cooked meals made in the van.

This is old school YouTube, without paid sponsorships, or paid reviews.

You’ll find yourself singing the insanely catchy theme song, “ Foresty Forest, he lives in a van… Foresty Forest! “

I always catch myself smiling when there’s a new Foresty Forest upload.

Favorite video: Living in a Minivan During Freezing Temperatures

Christian Schaffer – 70K subscribers

Christian makes her living as an outdoor adventure and travel photographer, and was a former Abercrombie model and retail manager.

As you’d expect, her travel videography is beautiful, but the channel is also packed full of thoughtful, intelligent tips about van life, making money, and life in general.

Favorite video: Van Life | Parking and Solo Female Safety

The Wild Card: Tom Green 267K YouTube subscribers

Bet you didn’t expect to find Tom Green on this list!

Tom is best known as a comedian, whose career started on MTV in the 1990s. He’s known for quirky and often pretty juvenile comedy like the Bum Bum Song , the Slutmobile , and Hollywood films Road Trip and Charlie’s Angels, as well as being married to Drew Barrymore in the early 2000s.

These days, Green seems a lot more introspective, as he’s vlogging his van life with his adorable dog, Charlie. Green’s still a quirky mix, with gorgeous cinematography, visits to stunning and out of the way places, musical offerings, and rambling, free-form live streams.

Favorite video: Lost Ancient City In America – Tom Green Visits Chaco Culture National Historical Park – Van Life

Slim Potatohead 129K YouTube subscribers

Slim Potatohead is something of an outlier among travel vlogs.

There’s definitely good videography and storytelling here, but this is not the vlog for you if you’re looking for fast paced, high excitement travel. Slim meanders along on his adventures, and it often seems like very little happens in a given blog. That said, he’s definitely an authentic voice that’s well worth checking out.

He travels pulling a small older trailer, spending plenty of time off grid in nature. Older videos feature the USA and Mexico, but these days he’s focusing on travel within Canada. There are videos on frugal camper renovations, camping spots, and plenty of exploring and meandering.

Favorite travel video: Latitude High: The Arctic Circle Campout

Mark Wiens 7.28 Million YouTube subscribers

Enthusiastic and energetic, Mark Wiens is a food vlogger who shares about South East Asia from his home base in Bangkok, Thailand.

I was first introduced to Mark’s Migrationology blog back in 2012, and I’ve loved following his transition to being one of YouTube’s most popular food and travel vloggers.

He features plenty of street food videos, with a strong focus on Thai food and travel.

Favorite video: Extreme Thai Street Food – CRAZY TOM YUM Late-Night Food Tour in Bangkok, Thailand!

Tyler and Todd 77K YouTube subscribers

Tyler and Todd are one of my absolute favorite channels. They’re funny, engaging, and have absolutely gorgeous videography and solid audio.

They’re a Canadian couple who travel with their adorable dogs Charlie and Eddy.

Because of the pandemic, they’re currently not traveling, but I’ve loved following along as they make a home in Nova Scotia, building an off grid cabin.

Incredibly personable and funny, they’re a treat to watch each week.

Favorite video: Gay Couple’s Routine | Living in an RV full time

Vancity Vanlife 145K YouTube subscribers

Vancity Vanlife features Chrome and his adorable bulldog pup, Cruz.

Chrome is a former professional DJ, so this is a fantastic channel if you love great music and great audio. As a former DJ, he has a fantastic voice for audio.

He uploads almost every day, and this channel is a throwback to early daily vlogs of YouTube. Videos are based mostly around Vancouver, British Columbia, but he does sojourn around Canada and into the USA when he’s able. It’s a great channel to get a feel for daily van life realities.

Favorite video: Winter Van Life In The Frosty Canadian Mountains… Is It Lonely Out Here?

Drew Binsky 2.34 Million YouTube subscribers

Drew, an American YouTuber, is definitely an engaging, entertaining presence on YouTube. He’s also controversial, as he continued traveling during the pandemic, and he’s garnered criticism for visiting countries like North Korea.

This is the type of channel that you’ll likely either love or hate.

Favorite travel video: He is the Ice Man (Wim Hof)

Project Amber 57K YouTube subscribers

Project Amber follows the adventures of a UK vlogger and his adorable Spaniel puppy, Lance as they travel in a converted ex-ambulance.

There’s plenty of great content in the archives that features road trips around the UK and Europe.

The man and dog duo just bought off-grid land in Portugal, and I’m looking forward to watching his local Portuguese adventures.

Favorite video: VAN TOUR – Ex-Ambulance Turned Offgrid Home on Wheels, with Log Burner & Upstairs Bedroom

Lost in Europe

Ash Pollard of Lost in Europe is a 27 year old photographer from Leicester/England.

As the channel title suggests, he mostly features van travel around Europe. There’s some gorgeous videography here, and I’ve loved his time in Scotland, as well has his new content on van life in the winter.

Favorite video: Winter Snow Storm Living In A Van / Arctic Van Life

Bald and Bankrupt 2.66 Million subscribers

Bald and Bankrupt follows the adventures of English travel vlogger Benjamin Rich, who mostly focuses on visiting post-Soviet states.

This channel is much more about meeting everyday people, and getting to know them and their lives, than cinematic scenes and views. It’s great entertainment, and I love that it focuses on getting to know people.

Like Drew Binsky, Rich has travelled during the pandemic. Rich was hospitalized for nine days for coronavirus in July 2020 in Serbia, which was not under lockdown at the time. He admitted that he was “blasé” about the pandemic, and has cautioned his viewers to take the pandemic seriously.

Favorite video: Inside The Belarus Chernobyl Zone

These are just some of my top picks for the best travel vlogs on YouTube channel to follow in 2022! I hope you enjoy watching their videos as much as I do.

Do you have any top travel vloggers suggestions that we missed? Let us know in the comments below.

Some really good travel Vloggers in the list! Thanks for the compilation!

travel vlogging is an emerging activity and i am also thinking of starting it in in dubai visit.

Wanderlust Chloe

From Travel Blog To Business: Tips, How I Earn A Living, And How Much Are We Talking?

Enjoying being out on the water in Antigua

Time to chart the evolution of Wanderlust Chloe the travel blog, to Wanderlust Chloe the business. And yep, I’ll be diving into a few of the all-important numbers, and giving you a few tips too!

It’s fair to say this blog has evolved over the last few years. For better, for worse, it’s gone from a lovely little passion project to errr, a full-time job. While I’ve never sat down and laid out any kind of business plan, I wanted to share a little of how I’ve transformed my travel blog into a business.

If you search for info on topics like this, you’ll find posts with titles like ‘make money travelling’ which, years ago, I would have thought were scams or get rich quick schemes! Surely you can’t enjoy one of life’s biggest perks (travelling) AND earn a decent living?

It turns out, you can.

There are other posts with steps on how to become a blogger, but very few reveal any of the numbers.  I know it’s a bit of a taboo, but I’ve often thought that a little more transparency in this industry would be beneficial.

First up, a bit of background on how I ended up where I am today, then it’s onto some number crunching and tips!

The Passion Project: Starting A Travel Blog

Let me take you back to 2014 for a minute. That summer I quit my stressful job in the music industry and went backpacking around Central America, Mexico and Cuba. Three and a half months of ‘me time’. The clichéd ‘finding myself’ trip. Look what a happy traveller I was!

Arriving in Costa Rica

Before I left I also set up a blog. A predecessor to this site. It was hosted on the easy-to-use Blogger platform, and was a place for me to share stories and photos from my trip. I had no idea it would become any more than that.

At the start of 2015, when I returned home, I got the travel blues. Big time! I started planning more trips, reluctantly found some freelance work in order to earn some money, and wondered what I could do next. I guess that was when I started learning that there were people who made a living from what was essentially my passion project.

Earning Experiences

Wanderlust Chloe - old website theme

My blog was small, with only a fraction of the traffic I have today, so it was exciting to be offered my first press trips. I went on a big blogger trip to Greece where I met a few people who’d go on to be some of my best blogging pals today. I went on a foodie trip to Slovenia and ate more in four days than I usually eat over Christmas! I booked holidays to places I was dying to see for myself, like Istanbul and Cappadocia . I went sailing around Croatia with one of my best friends, in exchange for producing a video and a blog. I started to exchange my work for travel experiences.

Wanderlust Chloe Blogger Croatia

The lifestyle was addictive. New experiences each month, seeing some of the world’s wonders, sharing special moments with friends. It felt a million miles from my previous world, and I felt a million times happier.

I continued to freelance for a production company, but as my excitement towards travel was ramping up, my enthusiasm towards that job was waning. We went our separate ways and I decided to ‘make a go’ of travel blogging.

Is It A Job When You’re Paid In Experiences?

But hang on a minute, is it a job when you’re paid in experiences rather than money? Ermm… well, it’s not a sustainable one!

I had dreams of being nomadic, going from sponsored trip to trip, and wondered if I could make something work with virtually no money coming in. I realised I had my head in the clouds, and while it may work for short periods of times, there’d be gaps. Gaps where I’d need to live at home as I couldn’t afford rent in London. There was a patch where I lived back home, dressed head-to-toe in Primark and couldn’t really afford to go out with friends. It was tough.

It was time to make some money.

Learning How To Make Money From Blogging

Over the last few years I’ve learned how to make money from travel blogging. I didn’t read a guide that taught me everything. It’s been a gradual process, figuring out what worked along the way. Oh and making plenty of mistakes and learning from them.

I’ve understood my value, what I can offer and where my skills lie. I’ve learned that reaching an audience like this one has a value. That my photography and videography (things I had no clue about when I started blogging!) are worth a few £, even if they’re not the polished works of many pros.

I was blind to all of this when I started, but looking at what I do more objectively gave me some core business sense.

Travel Blogging

A crucial part for me? That if Wanderlust Chloe was transforming into a business, I still wanted to keep my passion for travel. While some elements might feel like work, I still wanted to keep my wanderlust – the reason I started this whole thing!

So, you’ve heard my back story… now you want to know how I earn a living? Well, after a few days of number crunching as I tackled the annual arduous job of submitting my tax return, I think I have a pretty good idea!

How Do I Make Money Travel Blogging

Sponsored travel campaigns.

The main way I earn money is through sponsored travel campaigns. I scored my first big campaigns in the summer of 2015 (six months after returning from backpacking) with Busabout and Travel Talk Tours – tour companies I felt were a great fit with my blog. I made video content, wrote blogs and shared my experiences on social media.

Over the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to work on sponsored travel campaigns with Visit England, Visit Florida, Trek America, Visit London, German National Tourism Organisation, Travel Alberta and Visit The USA, to name a few.

There has also been some great brand work, for example producing video and photo content for Lonely Planet about Seville and Turin . Just over a year ago I was named a Lonely Planet Trailblazer (one of their top-tier ambassadors). If you haven’t joined their Pathfinders program, it’s a great way to get on the team’s radar.

Over the last few years, fees for sponsored travel campaigns have ranged from £400 to over £5,000.

Sponsored Blog Posts And Social Media Posts

My blog has a scattering of sponsored posts, which you might spot from time to time. This is basically a post that has been commissioned by a client, to raise awareness of their brand. I’ve worked with clients such as Flight Centre, Intrepid Travel, Tempur and Monzo on content like this.

Occasionally I’ll be asked to do a sponsored social media post, usually on Instagram or Instagram Stories, where I’ll feature a brand in the photo. For example, I recently worked with House Of Marley, an ethical brand, which makes cool headphones and speakers on this post.

View this post on Instagram                     M U S I C ? Listening to jungle music in the jungle? Nopeeee, it’s Despacito on repeat obvs!! I’m so happy I packed my new @houseofmarleyuk Positive Vibration 2 wireless headphones for my trip to Costa Rica. Great sound quality, super cute and I ? the earth-friendly vibe of the brand too. Definitely the perfect travel buddies for this week’s rainforest adventures! ?? AD #LiveMarley A post shared by Chloe Gunning ??? (@wanderlustchloe) on Nov 21, 2018 at 11:55am PST

Apps like Tribe and Takumi give you access to a range of sponsored post opportunities. I’ve found a few things on there, but I haven’t looked in about 6 months!

Over the last few years, fees for sponsored posts have ranged from £30 to over £1000.

One thing I feel is SO important, is that any sponsored content I create fits with my brand. I did one post on Instagram last year which I still feel a bit sad about. I saw dollar signs rather than judging whether the campaign would be a good fit for me. It was a really hard post to get right, as a result it flopped and I felt angry at myself for not listening to my gut and turning it down. As I said earlier – I’m learning as I go!

This has been a relatively new revenue stream for me. In brief, I earn a small commission (at no extra cost to the user) when someone clicks through from my blog to certain sites I have a relationship with e.g. Amazon, Booking.com and Get Your Guide.

For example, if you read my post on hiking Mount Batur , you might want to book a tour to follow in my footsteps. If you do, I earn a small commission.

In terms of money, this changes month to month, but I’m finding it really adds up, and is something I’m hoping to increase this year. On Booking.com alone, I average 30 hotel bookings per month, with my commission per booking ranging from 1.25 EUR to 46 EUR. Meanwhile, one of my top blogs brings in over 200 USD alone, all from one tour recommendation (it was a realllly good tour!)

Advertising

When I started blogging, I quickly installed Google Adsense. I used to earn pennies each day. It was painfully slow to build, and not much of a money earner.

If you’re a blogger, you might have heard of Mediavine – an ad management company that can apply ads to your site. You need to have a minimum of 25,000 monthly sessions in order to apply, but after that it’s very straightforward. I joined over a year and a half ago and earned 77 USD in my first month.

The more traffic you have, the more you’ll earn, so it’s certainly spurred me on to improve my SEO and increase my traffic.

I know bloggers earning in excess of 5,000 USD per month on Mediavine! WOW!

Travel Video Presenting

Some of my favourite and most memorable jobs have been at a little tangent from blogging. I’ve done two video presenting jobs. One was for Royal Caribbean’s tour company GoBe, and involved 10 days in Hawaii. I presented a few videos, showing some of the adventure activities you can go on in Hawaii. It was an incredible experience.

I also presented a video for Lonely Planet all about the food scene in New Orleans. This was another fab experience, and a chance to work with really talented creative people from around the world.

While I still ended up writing blogs and posting social media, I was being paid to host the videos – a very different kind of project to my usual sponsored travel campaigns. In some ways, it was refreshing to take the pressure off capturing so much myself, and let the pros do their thing instead!

Freelance Writing

Occasionally I write for other people. Over the last few years I’ve written several articles for Metro , a few for Skyscanner, a piece for The Telegraph and a mammoth feature for an in-flight magazine. It’s been great experience, and good for my portfolio too. However, this is not where the big bucks are!

Over the last few years, payments have ranged from £20 to £300. I told you it wasn’t where the money was!

Other Random Money Earners

I’ve done a bit of public speaking, including a presentation to the Chile Tourist Board all about my travels there. It was super nerve wracking standing up in front of a room of 100 travel professionals, but a great achievement!

I have around 100 photos available on Shutterstock . It’s not particularly lucrative (often just a few dollars per month) but now they’re on the system, I don’t have to do anything.

Tips To Help You Move From Blog To Business

Build your blog traffic.

Instagram numbers might be great for getting a sponsored post on that platform. Your Facebook page might spark great conversations. But, in order to truly move your blog to a business, you’ll need to reach people constantly and develop a passive income stream.

Start learning about SEO, how to get your posts seen on the first page of Google, understand backlinks and why they’re important. If you write about a destination, find the PR contact and see if they can share your post on social media. Improve your presence on Pinterest (one of my top referrers).

More traffic will help increase your value for sponsored travel campaigns, sponsored posts and hopefully up your affiliate and advertising revenues. Not sure where to start? I’ve found the Make Traffic Happen and DNW – Making Money From Blogging groups on Facebook particularly helpful.

Sign Up To Affiliate Programs

Most programs are easy to sign up to. These are the ones I use regularly:

Booking.com  – I used Hotels.com to start with but I’ve found Booking.com a lot more lucrative. It’s also the one I use to book my hotels when I’m away, so I prefer to recommend what I trust!

Get Your Guide – Only joined GYG last year but it’s a great affiliate earner if you blog about tours and activities. Along with links, there are interactive widgets you can embed in your posts.

AWIN – My main revenue through AWIN comes from Viator, but I used to use it for Hotels.com too. Once you’re registered, select the companies you’re interested in recommending, wait for them to accept you, then start accessing the links and ads.

CJ Affiliate – I barely use this one, but I link to a few Contiki tours on some old posts and that brings in a random lump sum a few times a year. In fact, I checked yesterday and someone booked a £2,000 tour last week, earning me just over £100.

RewardStyle and Shopstyle – If you feature fashion on your blog, then definitely look into these two. With RewardStyle you earn per sale, while Shopstyle is per click. I’ve dabbled in both, but ultimately I don’t feature enough fashion to really spend much time on them. Be aware that RewardStyle can be a bit fussy when you apply. I was accepted on my second attempt.

Shutterstock – Not an affiliate program, but if you want to earn some passive income by selling photos that are sat on your hard drive doing nothing, definitely look into signing up to Shutterstock.

It’s also worthwhile seeing if any brands you partner with have their own affiliate programs.

Shout About Your Strengths

What are you really good at? Can you make a great video? Are you a great writer? Do you get lots of replies to your  Instagram Stories? Are you an expert in one area of the world? Don’t be afraid to shout about it! The blogging community is very supportive, and there’s room for everyone to do their own thing!

Take this to the next level and make a media kit to send to clients. I started doing this around 8 months after setting up my blog. I didn’t have much to ‘shout about’ at that point, but I still found things! It reminds me of the time I wrote my first CV at school and said I was an excellent babysitter! My media kit is quite long as I show lots of examples, but I’ve also got a snappy one-pager available on my work with me page.

Learn From Others

Finally, if you’re reading this post, then you must be keen learn more about developing your blog. I’m the same and find myself constantly learning from my fellow bloggers and content creators. We have Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups and catch up at blogging events, sharing ideas, contacts and discussing dilemmas. It’s really helped! Connect with other bloggers, join some blogging groups on Facebook and build a community.

I found this post so helpful!

I want to take my blog to the next level this year, so will be really working on some of the things you mentioned.

Thanks Jess! Let me know if you have any Qs and best of luck with implementing my tips!

Nicely laid out and honest 🙂 I’m currently playing with 1, Amazon affiliates CPA (targetting specific travel related products), 2, Google Adsense CPM and CPC advertising (although my blog has far too little traffic to earn much – if anything – from that) and 3, Booking.com affiliates CPA to highlight hotels in locations I’m writing about. I reckon Booking.com will work out the winner with its 25% commission rates. Let’s see 🙂

Thanks Steve! That sounds really good as a plan. I’m finding booking.com one of the best out of mine, but definitely be prepared for about 30% cancellation rate. It’s so easy to book and then cancel that I see a fair few bookings disappear. Thanks for taking time to read and comment! Cx

Great post Chloe, I’ve read lots of “how to turn your blog into a business” post but most people skim over a lot and aren’t as honest (it seems that way anyway) I’m very new to blogging but trying to take every opportunity to learn more, thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to read it Rachael. It’s quite scary being this honest, but I also hate all the taboos, so I’m glad I did it! I hope it helps! Cx

So refreshing to read such an honest post. It’s definitely going to motivate me to get my blog making some money too. Thank you!

Thanks Sarah – so happy people are finding this post useful! Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for sharing all these tips! So helpful! One follow up question though… Im signed up to a few affiliates on AWIN too, but apart from adding links into the text of my posts, what do you actually do with all the banners and ads? Are you putting them in the sidebar/footer of your post? Your whole site? And if you have many, how do you decide where to put them? And isn’t manually adding and removing them (lots of the ones I get sent are for special offers) isn’t that very time consuming? Thanks for the post!

Hi Bella! Thanks for your comment. I only use a few text links in my posts for AWIN, mainly linking to specific tours on Viator. If you go to Links >> Link Builder, then create a deep link to a specific tour, I’ve found that can work well. I agree about the ads etc, I avoid those! I’m using Get Your Guide more now. Their widgets are easy to pop together and are specific to what you’re writing about. Hope that helps!

Yes – agree with how natural Get Your Guide’s city guides + specific tours fit nicely into the ‘look and feel’ and context of blog posts

Really useful blog! Thanks.

It’s been so inspiring to read this post. I started out blogging recently and want to turn it into a business eventually. So many people has turned down my dream and told me it’s not possible, but you (and a few others) have proven that it’s possible. And I now know where to start, so thank you so much for that! ❤️

Thank you SOOO much for your lovely words. It’s really nice to hear that you’re inspired to start out too. I hope it goes well and let me know if you have any Qs along the way!

Thank you for the transparency of your blogging business! As someone who aspires to be paid for her writing, I’m so thankful for your guidance. I appreciate your generous advice!

Thank you Vanessa – so glad you found it helpful. A little honesty goes a long way I think!

Thanks for the post! I’ve just started a blog up and it will be ready to go live very soon. I’ll definitely be referring back to this.

Thanks Zak – so glad it’s useful! Good luck with your blog too!

This is a great article – thank you for sharing – I’m not a blogger but I have always wondered how it works. I’m a pretty clue-y guy – I know how marketing works and can spot a sales pitch a mile away – but 2 marketing endeavors that I could not resist – buying “Fierce” by Abercrombie & Fitch when it was pumped into the aircon of the store – and last week booking a Mt Batur hike after reading your blog on it. As a solo traveler your blog made me feel safe to book through this company and it was amazing and I am so glad I did it. You have a way with words that builds trust and can tell you only work with brands you trust too. Awesome work!!

Hi David, I wanted to say thank you for leaving such a lovely comment. This is exactly why I love blogging and inspiring people to travel! I’m so pleased you loved Mt Batur – isn’t it an incredible experience?

After many many years of people telling me on FB, ‘Why on earth don’t you do a travel blog’ ,I finally am wondering, why I haven’t ??! So here I am, totally new to everything that goes with being a blogger, let alone wondering if my little travels and eats across the world would earn me a penny or more?!! Lol!!

So I asked Google, and your / site has been the most transparent, concise and a feel of genuine foundation to getting started. You have already educated me immensely, and taking note of all you have mentioned, I will ‘start at the very beginning’ !! Many thanks Chloe, and fingers crossed I can too mix business with a lovely travel life ?

Thank you so much!! I’m sooo happy to hear that! I hope you get the chance to set a blog up soon. It’s been an incredible journey so far!

Top 30 YouTube Niches With High CPM in 2024

travel vlog cpm

So, you’re probably looking to start a channel, but you want it to be profitable.

If you identify the niches that pay the most, you will earn more from the ads shown in your videos.

You don’t have to create an entire channel about that niche, you can simply talk about them in specific videos, and you’ll get paid more for that video.

Our business has survived on high CPM ads for the last 10 years, so we have a few things to teach. We’ll explain everything you need to know here.

Table of Contents

The 30 Most Profitable YouTube Niches

What makes a niche have higher cpm, what’s the average youtube cpm per country, how to calculate your cpm, how can i increase my cpm without changing the focus of my channel, how to increase your youtube income without getting higher cpm.

The higher the bid from the advertisers, the higher CPM your video will get. Here is the full list of the most expensive niches for advertisers that we’ve found.

YouTube ads work like an auction for advertisers. The more they pay, the more likely their ads will be shown.

In other words, the higher the average bid, the more CPM your video will have if it’s about that subject.

Low Bid: The lowest amount an advertiser has to pay to have their ads shown in an ad spot.

High Bid: The highest amount an advertiser has to pay to have their ads shown in an ad spot.

There are many more niches like these, but it’s impossible to list them all here. You can find more high CPM niches on your own following this guide .

If you read the section above, you now understand that the higher the advertising competition, the higher the CPM you get.

But what makes a niche highly competitive for advertisers?

Several factors can impact your RPM –and the CPM paid by the advertiser in the first place.

  • Industries where there’s a LOT of money involved.

Basically, markets that are highly profitable for businesses have tons of advertisers outbidding each other, which brings CPM up.

In highly profitable markets, businesses can afford to spend a lot of money on their ads, and still make a lot of money.

These are the niches that earn real money on advertising.

For example, some of the most competitive markets out there are:

  • Financial
  • Relationship advise and dating

However, these markets are too big.

Inside them, there are some golden niches that have CRAZY high CPM. You can find these at the top of the page.

2. Geographic location.

Location matters when it comes to CPM, and YouTube charges advertisers that target people from the highest-ranking countries substantially more than they charge for viewers who live in, for example, impoverished Latin countries.

richest countries in the world chart

As a result, you may find that where your videos are being played has a significant impact on your revenue.

3. How long the viewer watches the ad.

Some ads allow viewers to simply skip the advertisement–and if the ad gets skipped, the ad doesn’t count against the advertiser, which means that you won’t get paid.

4. How many of your video views are actually accompanied by advertisements

Not every viewer you attract will get an ad.

If there’s not an ad attached to a specific individual viewing your video, chances are, you aren’t going to get paid for it.

There aren’t always enough advertisers for every type of video, and advertisers often choose the specific types of videos they want their ads attached to.

Not only that, users who watch multiple videos in succession won’t see ads in front of all of them, which means that you won’t get paid for those views.

Users may also choose to use ad blockers , — or they may pay for the premium version of YouTube, which can reduce the number of ads they view.

For example…

Older audiences don’t use ad blockers as much and also earn more money on average, so they usually mean a higher CPM.

USAGE OF AD BLOCK PER AGE GROUP

All of these factors can have a substantial impact on how much you actually receive when someone views your video.

As we explained above, much of what an advertiser pays per thousand views will vary drastically depending on the country where the viewers live.

YouTube has not told anyone the average CPM per country, but from our experience, the general rule is that first-world — and especially western — countries will give you more CPM because advertisers need to pay more to reach them since there is more competition.

Why is that? Because of GDP per capita. It’s probably impossible for an Algerian audience to earn you as much money as a North American one, just because of the huge GDP per capita difference between these countries.

Americans have much more purchase power, so it’s natural that there are more advertisers competing to reach them so they can get some of that money.

Also, you need a big audience to really know your true CPM.

See, in the following example, the average CPM in Norway hovers around $43.16. In Algeria, that number is $25.

youtube cpm by country

In Canada and the United States, this partner has an average CPM of around $13, while the United Kingdom hovers around $14.16.

In Mexico, on the other hand, the average CPM is just 21 cents, while Georgia and Hungary come in at the lowest CPM, at just .01 cents per mille.

This is for reference only and these numbers won’t look the same for you.

In these examples, Algeria’s CPM was taken from 1 view while the US from 148 views.

So this is not statistically accurate.

And let me warn you:

Don’t expect your CPM to be even near $20.

The best-earning audiences I’ve ever heard of can only generate around $14 CPM — and that’s a VERY specific niche that is highly profitable .

travel vlog cpm

But from my experience, CPM in the US can vary between $2-$14.

Yes, that’s a huge variance. But that’s just because every audience is different.

Nonetheless, each YouTube channel has a different audience and a completely different CPM .

If your channel is for young Fortnite gamers, they will earn you a lot less money than, for example, an audience of lawyers that are looking to start a business — even if both audiences are from the US.

What does that mean for you?

You can’t control which advertisements play in front of your videos, nor can you control where your viewers come from.

You can, however, market heavily to an audience that is more lucrative –and accept that when it comes to video views, your income may be limited by the language you target and your geographic region.

In order to calculate the CPM of an advertisement, the cost of advertisement is divided by the total number of impressions, then multiplied by 1000.

So your calculation might look something like this:

(Cost of advertisement / total number of impressions) x 1000

If you want to calculate your RPM –that is, your revenue per million views–your calculations start by taking your estimated current revenue, then dividing by the current number of video views and multiplying by 1000.

Your calculation might look like this:

(current revenue / total number of video views) * 1000

This won’t give you an exact picture of exactly how much you should expect for each video view or how much income you can expect over time, but it will give you a basic understanding of how much your video is making.

This simple calculation can also help show you which videos are bigger earners, which means you can produce more, similar content in the future.

You can, technically, increase your CPM (or at least the amount of money you make) if you simply play more ads on your videos.

You can choose to make your videos in English or target a country with a higher GDP per capita, but this is not as practical when you already have an audience.

PRO TIP: Want to get more views? Put more ads!

I used to think that putting more ads would be harmful to my channel. I thought that people would get annoyed by them. Thankfully, I noticed that 99% of people don’t mind at all if you put more ads.

This is a secret that YouTube doesn’t tell you , but people that have been doing YouTube for a while have realized that the more ads you put, the more money you make, and the more your video is recommended by the algorithm.

Why does this happen? We can only assume that since YouTube is a business, they will recommend videos that actually make them more money 😉

As a rule of thumb, you should be showing a total of 4 ads per video.

You don’t have to get a higher CPM to earn a lot of money from YouTube.

There are other ways that don’t involve YouTube ad money . For example:

  • Affiliate Marketing : An affiliate link is a special link that can earn you money if people buy the product after clicking on it. One popular way to make money this way is to get products or paid apps that your audience might like, and review them. Give a fair, unbiased review and then add an affiliate link to the product in your video description.
  • Creating your own products and selling them : There are tons of product ideas that you can come up for selling to your audience. The ideal thing to do is to create something your audience would want to buy. It can be either digital or physical: an online course, consultations, premium content, merch, etc.
