Traveltek and Hurtigruten celebrate Travel Weekly Globe award for tech and innovation

The annual ceremony too place in-person in London for the first time in two years

Travel technology developer scooped the Best Technology Provider award the prestigious Travel Weekly Globe Awards held in London last night.

The event, took place in-person for the first time for two years due to the COVID pandemic.

It saw 1,200 travel industry professionals gather at the Grosvenor House for the black-tie event hosted by TV personality Rylan Clark-Neal and featuring performance from operatic singer Katherine Jenkins, comedian Tom Allan and M People lead singer Heather Small.

This year’s Globes was delayed from its traditional January date due to the Omicron COVID outbreak.

Cressida Sergeant, Traveltek chief commercial officer, said that the technology award was down to the hard work it has put in supporting trade partners over the last three years.

“It’s recognition that we have supported the trade through unprecedented times. It’s with a great deal of pride that we pick this award up and it makes all the hard work the effort.”

Traveltek, a leading supplier to cruise and mainstream holiday travel agents, has overhauled its travel booking platform during the pandemic moving to the Amazon Web Services cloud.

The firm has also launched a separate market insights division providing trends analysis from its live booking data.

The winners of the majority of the Globe awards are decided via a voting process among readers of Travel Weekly, the UK’s leading and only weekly travel trade magazine.

Special awards are decided by a panel of expert judges and this year’s Innovation in Travel award went to specialist cruise line Hurtigruten for its investment in sustainable technology.

The Norwegian operator is pioneering hybrid-powered ships and already has two in operation.

Anthony Daniels, general manager UK and EMEA, said the firm’s board was due to visit London, where it is setting up its HQ, this week and the will be “incredibly proud” when they are presented with the Globe.

“Everything we do is about sustainability,” he said. “We are incredibly conscious about the places we visit, and the communities, to make sure we are setting the path for future generations.

“We want to make sure our guests are supporting the places we go to and we are learning about the positive impact we can have.

“To get an award for innovation from the UK travel trade is probably one of the most prestigious we can win. It shows how important the UK market is for us and that’s never wavered even during COVID.”

Journal: TWUK Section: Title: Issue Date: 28/08/00 Author: Page Number: 61 Copyright: Other GLOBE AWARDS 2001 Constant and rapid change within the industry has led to two new categories being introduced to the Travel Weekly Globe Awards. The Travel Weekly Globe Awards 2001 will be bigger andbetter than ever.

The venue for the event – the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel, in London’s West End – has been fully refurbished and extended allowing us to play host to even more guests.

Last year, just over 1,300 people from across the industry attended the event; this year we are expecting more than 1,500 to attend.

As the longest running and most prestigious event in the travel industry, the Globe Awards recognise excellence among suppliers, from the cruise and ferry industry to tour operators, car-rental companies and many more. It is also the only event in the industry where travel agents get to vote exclusively for all the categories.

So whether you work for a multiple, consortium, miniple or independent agency, this is your opportunity to have your say in which companies will receive a Globe Award by voting for the suppliers who provide you with the best service or products for your clients.

There is a total of 35 categories spanning the core products and services of the industry (see page 73 for a full list) – two of which are new for this year.

In recognition of the growing importance of Web-based travel products we have launched a Best Web Site (travel trade) category.

This award will recognise the Best Web Site provided by a supplier to help agents make the sale.

Another development for 2001 is the introduction of the Best Recruitment Consultancy – a reflection of the increasingly important role that recruitment consultancies now play in the industry.

A survey of 106 companies conducted by NSM Research on behalf of Travel Weekly, 62% of respondents said they have used the services of a recruitment consultancy.

We have also redefined the Best Reservation System category, which this year will apply specifically to business travel agents.

But the Globe Awards are not just about voting for the best companies in the industry.

The night itself is an opportunity for everyone to give themselves a pat on the back for the previous year’s work and to look forward to another hectic year. You’ll have a chance to catch up with friends, network and make important new contacts. But most of all, we’ve got a fantastic night of entertainment lined up with a live band and disco, plus a casino with opportunities to win some brilliant prizes.

It will be a night to let your hair down and have a ball.

What’s more, we are giving three lucky agents an opportunity to make the Globes even more special by entering a competition to win free tickets to the event.

All you need to do to enter is fill in the voting form and you and a friend could spend the night at the awards as VIP guests of Travel Weekly.

The prize includes overnight accommodation and transportation to and from the Grosvenor House Hotel.

You will also get £250 in cash to spend on your visit to London. So what are you waiting for?

Get your thinking caps on and fill in the voting form. The winners will be notified by Travel Weekly in plenty of time for you to get your glad rags ready and decide who you are going to take to London on January 17 next year.

On top of the world: last year’s winners celebrate at the Globe Awards 2000, accompanied by TVcelebrity Mary Nightingale, left, who will be presenting the awards for the second year running
