Finding the right yoga mat is like reaching nirvana — once you do you’ll be in a state of bliss. Find one you can also travel with and that’s just icing on the cake. We tapped Mandy Ingber, yoga instructor and author of Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover to give us the scoop on what attributes you should look for in your next mat purchase. Ingber, who has been the yogi to several A-List celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale, suggested we make design, comfort, grip, and portability the standards we swear by, noting to pay special attention to things like a mat’s thickness, which if too clunky, can throw off your balance, and whether or not your mat feels like a Slip 'N Slide (not in a good way) or helps you stick your poses with no problems.

Armed with all of this insider information, we tested 40 different mats during multiple yoga sessions, taking careful notes and paying special attention to attributes like excellent balance of cushion and support, great grip, and portable features that made them easy to transport. Check out our favorite yoga mats for travel below.

Best Overall

Aeromat elite yoga pilates mat.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

It has a cushy and supportive feel.

The rubber smell, though slight, was bothersome.

When it comes to thickness, consider the Aeromat Elite Yoga/Pilates Mat to be the “just right” porridge, chair, and bed that Goldilocks commandeered in the classic kid’s fairytale. There’s just enough material to support and cushion your body as you flow from pose to pose, but not so much that it gets in your way or inhibits your ability to make solid contact with the floor. It also boasts a textured finish that ensures a secure grip, especially when things get wet. We were able to work up a good sweat without our hands and feet sliding around during testing. The surface also has built-in mesh to help your mat retain its shape. And when you’re ready to pack up and go: sling one of 12 calming hues (think celeste, dusty rose, sea glass green, and chai) across your shoulder (a harness is included with purchase). It’s super lightweight — essential for any portable exercise equipment — so toting it around will be as easy as child’s pose.

Best Overall, Runner-up

Jade yoga jade voyager mat.

  • Design 3.9 /5
  • Comfort 3 /5

The great grip keeps hands and feet in place no matter the pose.

Sensitive to smells? This mat has a strong rubbery one that lingers.

There’s nothing worse than having to constantly flow in and out of a pose to wipe the water away from your sweaty hands or feet. The Jade Yoga Voyager solves for this in two ways: its opened-cell surface easily soaks up excess moisture while the textured natural rubber enhances grip. Also, weighing in at just over 1.5 pounds, this lightweight pick is the perfect on-the-go partner, whether you’re headed down the street or across the country for a wellness retreat . Plus it folds down to the size of a yoga block , which makes storing it in a shoulder bag or a suitcase that much easier. Even better: every time you make it to the mat, you’ll know you’re doing so with Mother Earth in mind because this eco-friendly mat not only does away with synthetic rubbers (that’s right no PVC or EVA), using the natural kind by extracting the latex sap from rubber trees, but the brand also plants a tree for every mat sold.

Best Portable

Nike training mat 2.0.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

A little longer than an average yoga mat, it can accommodate folks up to six feet tall while still being super easy to carry.

While the extra cushion is great for bony joints, it does make balancing poses extra challenging.

Nothing can put the kibosh on a Zen practice quicker or be more cumbersome than a yoga mat that constantly keeps unfurling while you’re on the way to your next class. Thankfully, the convenient, adjustable strap that comes with the Nike Training Mat 2.0 helps manage this issue, allowing us to wrap it around both ends of the neatly rolled mat and comfortably carry this cushy two-pounder without experiencing any shoulder discomfort. Even better, for yogis who do a myriad of floor workouts (think Pilates, stretching, core work, and more), this high-density foam mat stands in the gap, making it an extremely versatile and well-padded option. In fact, it was so cushioned that we thought it could double up as a sleeping pad for camping , but the downside is that it may be a challenging surface for balance exercises.

Best Lightweight

Lululemon the lightweight 5mm yoga mat.

  • Portability 4.9 /5

This mat offers a solid, firm grip without being sticky.

If you’re a heavy sweater, you may want to steer clear because it tends to get slippery.

Don’t let this thin, featherlike yoga mat — which is light enough to take anywhere you want to flow — fool you: it’s still supportive and cushy enough to handle every pose from camel to headstand. The hundreds of mini rectangular nubs covering the top of the mat’s surface will help guide your hand and foot grip so you can easily maintain your balance in each of these poses and beyond.

We found this mat very easy to roll out and roll up, and it was supremely lightweight to carry. One thing to note is that the closed cell design doesn’t allow for the absorption of sweat, which can make this mat extra slippery. However, the mat was easy to clean post practice — simply wipe it down with a damp cloth to keep dirt, stains, and bacteria at bay.

The Details: 26 x 71 x 19 inches | 3.3 pounds | Foam

Best for Hot Yoga

Jadeyoga travel yoga mat.

This lightweight mat, which comes in two sizes, is easy to carry, so you won’t have trouble toting it to and from yoga class.

For multi-hour practice days, this thin mat may lack sufficient support.

When it comes to hot yoga, you should expect to sweat. While this may be good for helping to cool down your body, major water works also leave you open to slipping and sliding across your mat, which is a definite no-no, no matter what the position. Luckily, the Jade Yoga Travel Yoga Mat helps keep you grounded, literally, thanks to its open cell construction, which absorbs moisture, combined with its micro ribbed surface that offers a supreme grip. After testing this mat, we loved it for its exceptional grip that was suitable even with our sweaty palms. We also thought it felt lightweight, easy to carry, and we think it would stay rolled up in transit due to its grippy texture. Feel good environmental bonus: for every mat sold, the company plants a tree.

Best for Beginners

Newme fitness instructional yoga mat.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5

If you routinely deal with sweaty palms, this moisture-wicking mat will help rein in that excess water.

This mat molds to your body, leaving an imprint that doesn’t instantly go away.

Being a beginner in a room full of established yogis can feel super intimidating, but newbies can practice with more confidence thanks to the NewMe Fitness Yoga Mat. Doubling as an asana crib sheet, this handy yoga mat has 70 printed pictures of poses (think crow, cow face, corpse, among others) with their corresponding names in both English and Sanskrit emblazoned across its expansive surface. So, whether you need a quick refresher mid-class or help decoding what move the teacher is asking you to perform (we’re talking about you Chaturanga Dandasana!), this mat has got your covered. We also thought this affordable mat had a great grip that kept our hands in place and felt just as grippy as mats twice the price. It was very easy to roll up and carry around as well.

The Details: 68 x 24 x 0.2 inches | 2.6 pounds | PVC

Gaiam Premium Reversible Lunar Wave Yoga Mat

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

It features an antimicrobial, waterproof layer that is moisture-wicking and nonslip.

This mat is on the thin side, so if your knees or wrists need extra cushion and support, go with another pick.

The small raised nodes covering this mat’s dual-textured sides gives it a gummy feeling that offers greater traction for hands and feet to keep you steady so you don’t slip. The result: a tremendous grip that verges on almost feeling sticky at times. Don’t let those little nodes fool you, though; they are tiny enough that they won’t disturb those peaceful moments on the mat, not even while you’re letting the day’s work sink in during Savasana. Did we mention we are also moonstruck by the stunningly painted design of moons in its many forms? FYI: if you are a visually stimulated person, a mat with a cool design, like this one, can make your practice more pleasurable, says Ingber. A handy bonus: with this mat you also get access to an online library of yoga content .

The Details: 8 x 24 inches | 6 millimeters | PVC, latex-free

Best Reversible

Manduka yoga mat.

There’s an alignment stripe down the center of one side, which can help better guide beginner’s with hand, foot, and overall body placement.

The mat’s surface is closed-cell, which means it won’t absorb your sweat or any bacteria, so you’ll have to be diligent about wiping it down post flow.

We love that this eco-friendly Manduka mat is not only free from harsh chemical substances but makes you feel like you are getting two mats for the price of one, thanks to the dual-hued sides. Regardless of what mood leads your color choice that day (we are super keen on the lavender/fig combo), you can always count on the mat’s firm, textured surface to add stability through traction. This well-designed mat held up in a variety of classes — flow, power, and hot yoga — but we think yogis interested in a more restorative practice might do better with a more cushioned pick. Bonus points: it’s light and easy to roll and fold, which makes it a great portable option for yoga-based travel .

Best Budget

Amazon basics yoga mat.

Amazon

  • Grip 4.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

At half an inch inches thick, this cushy mat is a godsend for those with sensitive joints.

The thickness makes it slightly tricky to transport.

Shelling out big bucks for a mat can be super off-putting, especially if you’re a newbie and unsure if you’re ready to commit to getting downward-dog on the regular. Luckily this mat is very kind to your wallet—without you having to sacrifice on things that really count like durability, grip, and comfort. Those who spend lots of time pressing into their hands (think Crow or Wheel), will find the thick cushioned surface is gentler on wrists. We used it often for handstands against the wall and planks and never felt like we were slipping, even when sweaty. The ample cushioning also makes this a great choice for floor-based bodyweight moves (hello crunches!), too.

Other Travel Yoga Mats We Liked

These yoga mats didn’t make our main list, but they still scored well and had a few key standout features that placed them in a league of their own.

YogaAccessories 1/4-inch Deluxe Yoga Mat : At 74 inches long, this foam-based mat is longer than traditional ones, which tend to land around 68 inches, making it more amenable to those over six feet tall. It’s also extra thick, making kneeling poses like camel, low lunge, and cat/cow more manageable, especially for those with extra sensitivity in this area. That said, this 3.6-pound pick can be a little unruly when it comes to transporting it, making it less portable for travelers.

Lululemon The Mat 3mm : This barely-there option — it’s only 0.12 inches thick — is dual-sided, boasting one that’s sticky and nubby to keep you stable and grounded, while the other is smooth and cushioned for workouts that won’t leave you drenched (think a couple of quick stretches versus a full-on power flow). While we love that it comes in six gorgeous shades and has an antimicrobial layer that keeps mold and mildew at bay, we weren’t fans of how moisture marks remained long after we finished our last flow.

Blogilates Beginner Lightweight Yoga Mat: This mat — which is lightweight, easy to roll, and comes with its own carrying case — is the perfect companion for on-the-go flows. At 4mm thick, this thinner silhouette is great for those who who may need extra stability during a super active and balance-heavy practice (think: Power Vinyasa). As you flow from asana to asana across this 68-inch surface, you’ll be treated to a super grippy, textured surface (both top and bottom) that eliminates slippage. One drawback: hair and dirt are commonplace when using this mat.

For this article, we looked over results from two different yoga mat tests, in which we tried a total of 40 yoga mats. In the first round of testing we tried 19 mats from notable brands (think Manduka, Lululemon, and Jade) through three to five yoga classes per week over a four-week testing period. During this time, we assessed each yoga mat for its design, comfort, grip, and portability — all features that yoga instructor Mandy Ingber said can make or break a yoga practice. Testers continued putting these mats through their paces for an additional six months to collect long-term insights.

For our second test, we tried an additional 21 yoga mats during a yoga class, paying special attention to mat thickness, cushioning, support, and how easy they were to clean. After the class was over, we rolled and packed up the yoga mats, walking around the building, and going up and down stairs to take notes on how portable they were, if they stayed rolled up during transit, how lightweight or heavy they felt to carry, and how easy (or difficult) it was to reroll the mats and pack them up.

In the end, the standout mats put the kibosh on sweat (at least most of them), weren’t overly cushy but left our joints feeling happy, and offered a stellar grip when flowing through poses. Most of all, we felt they were portable enough to travel with.

Tips for Buying a Travel Yoga Mat

Don’t forget about weight.

Lugging around a super heavy mat can make any yoga feel less than Zen, especially if it saddles you with a heavy baggage fee at the airport. That’s why it’s wise to reach for more lightweight styles (think under 2.5 pounds) so you can easily transport it to your final destination.

Consider stickiness

As far as yoga mats go, stickiness is equivalent to traction.  So if you’re looking to lower your risk of slipping and sliding all over the place, the stickier, the better (PVC yoga mats have a pretty high stickiness factor). Also handy for staying power: mats with a raised texture.

Plan for extra support

According to Ingber, thinner yoga mats make great travel companions, as they fold easily and usually weigh less. She also notes that barely there mats “will often leave you feeling every bit of the floor,” which is why shoring up your practice space with a towel or shirt to counter any pain points (think wrists or knees) or cushion more weight-bearing asanas is advisable.

First determine what type of mat you have, as some are meant to be folded and others rolled. If the former, follow the creases if they are apparent, or simply fold it small enough to fit into the storage space you are aiming for. The latter? Roll it as tightly and evenly as possible. Ultimately, the key is to make it work for the type of luggage you are using, whether that be a backpack, a duffel bag, a tote bag, or something else.

When not traveling, consider rolling up your mat and placing it in a mat bag. This will help you keep the practice surface clean, crease-free, and for the most part unscathed, especially if you have a furry friend roaming around your home.

From Astura Yoga Mat Detox to TreeActiv Yoga Mat Spray to Moxe Yoga Mat Cleaner , there are no shortages of quality sprays lining shelves that can help eliminate sweat, stenches, and bacteria. You can also go the DIY route, mixing apple cider vinegar in a 1:4 ratio and adding a few drops of tea tree oil. No matter what route you choose, proper cleaning will help extend the life of your mat.

Flexible, travel yoga mats are specifically designed to pack down small and not take up too much room (or weight) in your suitcase or backpack. They're often thinner than your standard yoga mat and made from a more flexible material, both of which allow them to be stashed in small places but still provide you some cushioning as you move through asanas.

Our top pick is the Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat ; this mat weighs just 2.2 pounds and is extremely flexible, allowing it to be easily packed while traveling. For a budget mat, we recommend the Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat ; it's compact enough to fit into a suitcase or carry-on, features a grippy texture, and costs less than $20.

With any yoga mat, the thinner it becomes, the less reliable it is, so it's important to look for a travel yoga mat that still has a good grip, is made of durable material to withstand folding and transportation, and is easy to clean. We've vetted the world of foldable, travel yoga mats to narrow in on the four best for every type of yogi and traveler.

If you're looking for a standard yoga mat, check out our guide on the best yoga mats, from yoga instructors .

Best overall: Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

travel yoga matt

Pros: Folds down very small, lightweight, tear-resistant, natural rubber, sticky surface

Cons: Expensive, not a lot of padding

Long-time yogi and Hatha yoga teacher Christabel Lobo and Kasia Gondek, DPT, CSCS, a physical therapist in Southern California, both point to the Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Travel Mat as your best choice for keeping up with your practice while traveling.

At 2.2 pounds and 1.5 mm thick, it's extremely lightweight and flexible, making it easy to fold up tightly and toss in a suitcase. Despite being so thin, the mat is made of a woven scrim so it won't tear or stretch in your suitcase.

It has Manduka's signature closed-cell design which helps keep the surface dry, as well, and creates a strong grip for sweaty hands, so you can even pop into a hot yoga class on your travels. All Manduka mats are made without PVC or potentially toxic plasticizers. --Rachael Schultz

Best budget: Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat

travel yoga matt

Pros: Affordable, very lightweight, meant to be folded

Cons: PVC material

If you only travel a couple of times a year, you don't want to drop too much on a mat. Infrequent travelers will love the Gaiam Foldable Travel Yoga Mat .

This one-pound mat is even more lightweight than Manduka's eKO Superlite but it's slightly thicker at 2mm thick. The whole mat folds down to a 10-inch-wide and 12-inch-long rectangle for easy transportation in a carry-on or overnight duffel bag. It's one of the most affordable options available, too.

I have a full-sized Gaiam yoga mat that's lasted me for several years with regular use, so I can attest to the quality of the brand's goods.

Best cushioned: JadeYoga Travel Yoga Mat

travel yoga matt

Pros: Natural materials, purchase benefits Trees for the Future, more cushioning

Cons: Heavier than many other travel mats, doesn't pack down as small as others

Nearly all travel yoga mats are pretty thin, which is frustrating if you have knee of joint issues. This 3mm-thick mat from JadeYoga is the best you can get for a mat that'll still roll up tight. What's more, the JadeYoga Travel Mat is available in 68-inch and 74-inch lengths, which offers taller people adequate space on the mat.

JadeYoga puts special attention on sustainability, and its mats are made of natural rubber sourced from trees with no PVC or other synthetic materials added. For each one purchased, the brand ensures a new tree will be planted.

A no-slip, open-cell (more absorbent) surface gives you a solid grip, and it features much more cushioning compared to other travel mats. At approximately 3 pounds, it's a bit heavier than others on this list, but that's a small price for more support.

One downside is that, unlike most travel yoga mats, JadeYoga's rolls instead of folds, so it may be harder to fit in your luggage. On the other hand, the quality makes it a great multi-use pick for home practice as well as travel.

JadeYoga makes one of our favorite yoga mats for sweaty yogis , too.

Best reversible: The Reversible (Un)Mat

travel yoga matt

Pros: Reversible with a grippier side for when you sweat, very thin and light, antimicrobial

Cons: Not much cushion

One of the downsides of taking your yoga practice on the road is decreased access to the props and extras that make classes and at-home vinyasa sessions more enjoyable.

The Reversible Mat from Lululemon helps solve that problem with a moisture-absorbing polyurethane-coated layer on one side, and natural rubber on the other.

If you get super sweaty during vigorous practice, use the grippier side to keep yourself from slip-sliding off the mat. For more chill sessions, you can use the rubberized side. The mat also has an antimicrobial additive to help prevent mold and mildew, which makes for more peace of mind while traveling.

6 Best Travel Yoga Mats To Keep Your Practice On The Go

Doing Yoga while traveling is an experience that many are missing out on. Finding a quiet spot and meditating helps you appreciate the finer nuances of nature and understand yourself on a deeper more personal level. An experience so calming and peaceful that it tends to alter your entire perspective on life.

Now imagine that while you are having this peaceful experience, your yoga mat starts to irritate your skin. Or maybe there’s a small tear. Or maybe that sweat smell from the mat just wouldn’t go and your whole experience is ruined.

Picture of me doing yoga in Cyprus

I always believe in choosing the right equipment. I have been traveling for almost a decade now and wherever I go, I use the best equipment. In this article, I will be discussing some of the best Yoga Mats you can take with you while traveling. I have tried many Yoga Mats and the ones featured on this list are my best ones so far. All of them stand out for different reasons and you can choose the one that suits you best.

Table of Contents

Best Travel Yoga Mats

1. amazon basics yoga mat.

Amazon Basics Yoga Mat

Read Customer Reviews Here >>

The Amazon Basics Exercise Yoga Mat is one of the most basic (no pun intended) and cheapest yoga mats you can get your hands on, but do not let that fool you into thinking it might be subpar. It’s durable and is made with foam which helps with the stretchability ensuring it always springs back in shape. The best bang for your buck one may say.

With the extra ½ inch of thickness, your elbows, forearms, and knees will be spared from doing planks and other core exercises. The padding is so comfy that you probably might not even feel the hardness of the floor. And with the elastic strap, you can roll up your yoga mat and carry it everywhere with you.

Extra thick exercise mat

  • Extra Thick
  • Foam Construction
  • Susceptible to tear if used on pointy rocky surfaces

2. Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Mat

Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Mat

With more than 25 years in the market, Manduka has risen through the ranks to be one of the best yoga mat sellers out there. All their products are a testament to great quality. I have been using mine for nearly 4 years and I vouch for their quality.

For starters, you can fold it down to the size of a laptop. You can easily store it in the laptop compartment of your backpack.

But wait a minute. What if it starts to stink? We all know how it can be if these mats are stored in an enclosed area with no room to breathe.

Well, the Manduka Superlite Travel Mat is constructed with a closed-cell structure. What this means is that it prevents the moisture from seeping into the fabric. Yoga Mat won’t be stinky at all even after regular use.

lightweight yoga mat

It has been 25 years since Manduka was launched, and their years of expertise are clearly reflected in their craft. You just can’t go wrong with a Manduka.

Pro tip: To ensure the longevity and cleanliness of your Manduka Superlite Travel Mat, it is recommended to wipe it down after each practice session using Manduka’s Natural Rubber Yoga Mat Restore.

  • Super Potable
  • Prevents moisture absorption
  • Latex-free composition – suitable for practitioners with latex sensitivities
  • Tightly woven scrim resists tearing or stretching
  • Thin mat can be hard on joints
  • It can bunch up during some transitions

3. The JadeYoga Harmony Yoga Mat

The JadeYoga Harmony Yoga Mat

Crafted from 100% natural rubber, the JadeYoga Harmony Yoga Mat excels in moisture absorption and traction, which is pretty essential for maintaining stability during a sweaty session. It also means that this is perfect for an outdoor session even when it is hot.

Measuring at 3/16 inch thick, the Harmony Mat provides a delicate balance of support and cushioning under hands, feet, and knees, ensuring a comfortable yet stable practice experience.

But what really sets JadeYoga apart is their commitment to the environment. JadeYoga prioritizes the use of natural materials and sustainable production practices. Free from PVC, phthalates, heavy metals, and harsh chemicals, the Harmony Mat aligns with eco-conscious values and promotes a clean, toxin-free practice environment.

It’s not just the product design though. JadeYoga enforces its commitment to sustainability by partnering up with organizations like Trees for the Future, the company plants a tree for every mat sold, contributing to global reforestation efforts and fostering a healthier planet for future generations.

If you are looking for a yoga mat that is not only high quality but is also made with environmentally sustainable practices, then the JadeYoga Harmony Mat is the right one for you.

  • Strong Rubber smell

4. Gaiam Yoga Mat

Gaiam Yoga Mat

The Gaiam Yoga Mat is another budget-friendly option that is not only the best bang for your buck but it is also even more potable than the Amazon Basics Yoga Mat. With a 2mm thickness, you can fold this yoga mat into a flat 10” x 12” square and store it inside your backpack, or even a tote bag.

It also comes with a lifetime warranty and has a slightly sticky surface that will help you hold your poses.

Probably the $20 I have spent so far.

  • Cheap
  • Great Quality
  • Sticky Surface for grip
  • Foldable and very compact
  • Thin Mat may hurt joints
  • Not suitable for hot yoga

5. Liforme Travel Yoga Mat

Liforme Travel Yoga Mat

All of the Liforme Yoga Mats have alignment markings that act as a visual guide. But it’s not just these markings that make Liforme so special. They are thicker than your typical super thin yoga mats and are a bit spongy. Your joints and knees won’t ache and the mat can be used on any rough surface.

Liforme takes the grip of the Yoga Mat seriously. So much so that they coin it as ‘GripForMe’ and claim that the mats made from their ‘GripForMe’ material is one of the most grippiest Yoga mat material currently available on earth. They have even patented their alignment markings and have termed this feature as ‘AlignForMe’.

The downside to the Liforme Yoga Mat is that it is the widest, thickest, and longest than all of the Yoga Mats featured here. Despite all of this, Liforme still maintains a level of portability. You can roll it up and carry it in a yoga mat carry bag.

  • Alignment Markings
  • Great Grip
  • Thick Cushioning for Knees and Joints
  • Comes with a Yoga Mat Carry Bag
  • High Quality
  • Expensive
  • Heavy (weighs 4 pounds)

6. SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat

SNAKUGA Travel Yoga Mat

The Snakuga Travel Yoga Mat is pretty unique. Crafted from a blend of natural rubber and suede, the Snakuga Travel Yoga Mat has a soft texture that not only has a great grip but it also absorbs sweat. A delicate balance between softness and stability. This particular fusion of natural materials not only enhances the mat’s eco-friendly appeal but also provides a tactile experience that connects you with the earth beneath.

However, like any product, the Snakuga Travel Yoga Mat has its considerations. Its minimal cushioning may pose discomfort for practitioners accustomed to more plush mats. While the non-slip surface excels on most grounds, it may encounter challenges on certain surfaces like carpet or hardwood floors.

It does have remarkable flexibility though. Thin and foldable, it effortlessly tucks into compact spaces. The included carrying bag is a bonus. Whether to use it or not, it’s entirely up to you.

  • Minimal Cushioning

How to Choose the Right Travel Yoga Mat

I have always believed that when you travel, you must travel comfortably. Too many inconveniences result in the journey not being satisfactory enough. This is why i penned down How to Travel Lightly for a comfortable and hassle-free travel experience. Comfort can be an important determinant that may or may not break your travel. This is why choosing the right travel yoga mat matters a lot.

You don’t want your yoga mat to be all bulky and inconvenient to carry. Or be made of some poor-quality material that stinks all the time. I’ve written this guide to help you choose the right travel yoga mat. The right one will last you years and is much easier to travel with.

Is it portable?

One of the first things you should look for in a yoga mat is portability. Being able to move effortlessly while carrying the mat is a priority. Some yoga mats can be rolled up and secured to your backpack while others can be folded and stuffed inside the bag.

But that does not mean you get your hands on the first yoga mat you come across. It’s important to get one that is designed for travel and is compact when rolled up or folded. The ones designed for travel are lightweight and easy to carry.

My favorite Yoga Mat when it comes to portability is the Manduka eKO Superlite Yoga Mat. The fact that it can fold down to the size of a laptop is a huge win in my books.

Will the thickness suffice?

Consider the thickness of the mat. While thicker mats provide more cushioning and support, they can also be bulkier and heavier. Thinner mats are lighter and easier to pack but may not offer as much cushioning.

Also, it depends on the location. If you’ll be using the mat on tough rugged pointy terrains, then you’ll need a thicker one for the added cushioning. If you’ll be using it on soft surfaces like sand or a wooden floor then a thin yoga mat should suffice.

Gaiam Yoga Mat has a sticky surface for grip and is very budget-friendly. It is pretty thin which makes it great for use on soft surfaces like the beach or a man-made floor like a terrace or a verandah.

Alternatively, Liforme Yoga Mat has great thickness and some cushioning that feels great on your joints and knees. The only downside here is that it can be a tad bit heavy.

Is the Material suitable for you?

Choose a travel yoga mat made from durable and lightweight materials. Many travel mats are made from rubber, microfiber, or PVC. Consider factors like grip, traction, and how the material feels against your skin.

If you have any reactions or allergies, this is the best time to identify them. It will help you avoid potential reactions or any other issues altogether.

Also, some mats have a strong chemical odor right after you buy them. The smell will wear off upon continuous usage. If you are sensitive to such synthetic or chemical smells, it’s best to stay away from them. This is most commonly seen in rubber mats.

The JadeYoga Harmony Yoga Mat may be of superb quality but it tends to have a strong rubber smell. You can go for it if you do not mind the smell. It will last you for a long period if you can get past the smell.

Test the Grip

Ensure that the mat provides adequate grip and traction, especially if you’ll be practicing hot yoga or vigorous flows. Look for mats with textured surfaces or non-slip materials to prevent slipping and sliding during your practice.

Remember that the yoga mat shouldn’t just be convenient to carry when it comes to traveling. It’s got to be functional too. No point in having a mat that’s great and convenient for traveling but not at all functional.

Liforme Travel Yoga Mat is the grippiest yoga mat on my list.

Is it easy to Clean?

This is a tricky bit. Choosing a Yoga Mat that is easy to clean and maintain while on the go may seem easier but is far from it. All Yoga Mats will have their own instructions to care for and maintain them. But as a rule of thumb, it is wise to wipe down the mat clean after use. You can use a water-dampened cloth, a homemade diluted vinegar solution, or a gentle mat wash, and then allow it to fully dry before storing.

While most yoga mats can be washed in a machine, the stretching and tumbling process can easily tear a PVC or non-rubber mat. Rubber mats generally hold up better in the washer, but they absorb a significant amount of moisture and may take a long time to dry.

If you are in a cold region with little to no sunlight, machine washing a mat can be very tedious. Also, natural rubber and many plastic foams degrade when exposed to UV light. Therefore you have to be cautious when drying wet mats in the sun.

Since choosing a good quality travel yoga mat can be pretty expensive, you need to care for it and maintain it well. And since maintaining it requires quite a bit of effort, it’s best to choose a mat where you can maintain it with ease.

What about Price?

Consider whether the mat is worth it or not. If you’ll be traveling for a short while then it’s wise to go with a cheaper yoga mat for temporary use. The quality won’t be that great but it will serve the purpose. If you’ll be traveling a lot or are an avid traveler, it’s wise to go for an expensive one that will last you for a long time.

Yoga Mat by Amazon Basics is one of the cheapest yoga mats on this list.

The 7 Best Travel Yoga Mats On Amazon

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

Finding a compact yoga mat you love can help you take your practice out of the studio and into the world. The best travel yoga mats are lighter and thinner than traditional mats, and they roll or fold up for easy carrying. When choosing a yoga mat for travel, make sure to get one that is made with a grippy material and a thickness you’ll feel comfortable practicing on.

The material your yoga mat is made of will affect both how nonslip and light it is. PVC mats are generally fairly budget-friendly and light, but they can take a while to break in . And in my personal experience, PVC mats often aren’t as grippy as rubber mats, especially for folks who tend to get sweaty when they do yoga. Natural rubber mats can be a bit more expensive and are heavier, but they can also be super grippy. And while PVC mats are synthetic and are not biodegradable, mats made from natural rubber are biodegradable . Synthetic rubber mats maintain many of the same benefits of rubber mats, but tend to be harder on the environment , which may be a factor for eco-minded shoppers.

While traditional yoga mats are usually between 4 and 6 millimeters thick , travel versions tend to be considerably thinner, which cuts down on their overall weight and allows them to either roll up in a narrow cylinder or fold several times into a small rectangle. The thinner your travel yoga mat, the easier it will be to fold — but keep in mind that a thinner mat may be less comfortable on your knees and elbows, especially if you’re practicing on hard flooring.

The standard dimensions for a yoga mat is about 24 inches by 68 inches . Many travel yoga mats maintain that standard, but you can also find longer mats that are still travel friendly. It will increase your mat’s weight a bit, but it is a good trade-off if you’re tall or would like to have more room.

Practicing yoga can be a wonderful way to exercise, gain flexibility, and calm your mind . Here are some of the best travel yoga mats — as well as a couple yoga accessories to help with comfort — so you can flow anywhere you go, from a hotel room during a hectic work trip to a park on a sunny spring day.

1. A Fan-Favorite Budget Travel Yoga Mat

Gaiam Folding Travel & Exercise Mat

  • Material: PVC
  • Thickness: 2 millimeters
  • Size: 24 x 68 inches
  • Weight: 2 pounds

What makes it great: Touting more than 3,000 ratings on Amazon, this popular PVC travel mat from well-known yoga brand Gaiam is both high quality and budget friendly at just $25. It’s foldable and easy to toss into a tote or carry-on bag. Weighing 2 pounds with a 2-millimeter thickness, it’s right in the middle of the road in terms of typical travel mat measurements — which makes it a solid first travel yoga mat purchase if you’re not totally sure what specs you’re after. Plus, it comes in five colors.

One reviewer wrote: “Wanted a yoga mat to use while on Annual Training for the Air Guard while staying in carpeted hotels. I’m not so comfortable with doing yoga on a carpet that may not be clean, or has been used my many others I don’t know. This mat is thin and is made to fold, fitting easily in my duffle bag. The texture of the mat is not quite like one you might roll—it’s a little stiffer and not quite as squishy—but it serves the purpose well. It suits my needs perfectly. I highly recommend.”

2. This Super-Thin Mat Made With Natural Rubber

Manduka eKO Superlite Travel Yoga Mat

  • Material: Natural rubber
  • Thickness: 1.6 millimeters
  • Size: 24 x 71 inches
  • Weight: 2.2 pounds

What makes it great: Manduka’s travel yoga mat is nice and thin with a thickness of 1.6 millimeters, so it’s easy to fold or roll and bring along anywhere even though it’s a bit longer than a standard mat. Reviewers note that it has great grip with one even writing, “I can easily grip the mat and do everything I do on my regular mat.” It’s available in two colors.

One reviewer wrote: “Great to bring along during a trip. It does indeed fold just like a towel or sheets with no creases left behind after unpacking it. It provided enough cushioning and stability to practice over a cemented floor. I practiced every single day on a recent 8 day trip in Ecuador. I highly recommend it.”

3. The Best Thicker Mat For Travel

Jade Yoga Travel Mat

  • Thickness: 3.2 millimeters
  • Size: 24 x 68 inches, 24 x 72 inches
  • Weight: 2.9 pounds, 3.3 pounds

What makes it great: If you’re looking for a roll-up travel mat that’s still thick enough to provide your knees and joints with some cushioning, think about investing in the Jade Yoga travel mat . While this particular mat is a bit heavier than others on this list, it is 3.2 millimeters thick and made of thick, natural rubber. Jade Yoga is one of my favorite yoga mat brands. Their mats are super-duper grippy and wonderfully textured, holding even my very sweaty hands firmly in place. If you’re in need of a mat that’s lighter than what you use in the studio but don’t need it to fold, this is a great pick. It’s available in four colors and two sizes, including one that’s a few inches longer than standard.

One reviewer wrote: “I love that I can roll/fold this up and carry it easily anywhere I want, and although it is thinner than most other mats, it has great grip and I almost prefer the feel of it over my more substantial mats. I’ve had other yogis comment that they are pleasantly surprised at how good it is for what they were expecting out of a travel mat!”

4. This Thinner Version Of Jade’s Rubber Mat

Jade Yoga Voyager Yoga Mat

  • Weight: 1.5 pounds

What makes it great: If you want a natural rubber mat but need it to be as light as possible, consider the Jade Yoga Voyager travel mat . At just 1.5 pounds in weight and 1.6 millimeters in thickness, this could be the perfect choice for you. It’s foldable or rollable for easy transport and has the same awesome grip that sets Jade’s mats apart. It’s available in green , purple , or blue .

One reviewer wrote: “Perfect yoga mat for traveling. Super light weight and fits in my suitcase without taking up too much space or weighing it down. Has the same feel like the jade harmony mat that I’ve been using for 8 years [...] Great traction on floors and feels great on my finger tips when doing my yoga moves.”

5. A Thick Yet Foldable Mat Under $20

Navaris Foldable Yoga Mat for Travel

  • Thickness: 4 millimeters
  • Dimensions: 24 x 68 inches

What makes it great: This PVC travel yoga mat is super light considering its generous 4-millimeter thickness. Reviewers have confirmed that it is both comfortable to use and easy to travel with, with one describing it as a “great mat, easy to fold, sufficient thickness for comfort.” Choose from five colors: green, light gray, pink, and two shades of blue.

One reviewer wrote: “I would most likely not use this regularly for classes, etc, but it is very handy for when you want a mat with you when travelling. It will sit in the bottom of a suitcase or in an end pocket of a decent-sized holdall style of bag. Good value.”

6. A Folding Rubber Mat That Comes With A Carrying Strap

Yogo Ultralight Folding Yoga Mat

  • Thickness: 1.5 millimeters

What makes it great: For a super portable option, try this thin foldable rubber yoga mat that comes with its own built-in carrying strap. It’s made of natural rubber, and it’s nice and grippy, which makes practicing anywhere easy. One reviewer wrote, “It makes going to practice in Central Park a breeze!” It’s available in two colors.

One reviewer wrote: “This is a very thin mat but the cleanliness and the compactness can’t be beat. The way it folds ensures that the side that touches the ground never comes into contact with the side you stand on. The carrying strap hooks easily to a backpack or luggage when traveling. The mat has good stickiness to it and with a yoga blanket/towel for your knees and hips the thinness is not an issue.”

7. An Extra-Long Rubber Mat For Travel

B YOGA Traveler

  • Material: Synthetic rubber
  • Dimensions: 26 x 71 inches, 26 x 85 inches
  • Weight: 2.2 pounds, 2.6 pounds

What makes it great: I have a regular B Mat that I use all the time at the yoga studio and love it for its smooth-yet-grippy texture that really keeps my hands and feet in place. This travel version of the B Mat has the same texture but is just 2 millimeters thick, making it much lighter. It comes in two extra-long sizes, which is perfect if you’re very tall or simply like a lot of room to practice. It can be rolled or folded, and it comes in eight colors.

One reviewer wrote: “This mat is very sticky, so this is a good choice if you have trouble with sliding on other yoga mats. It is also very thin, so if you use it every day you’ll want to layer it over a thicker mat. For travel, it folds well and was easy to pack in a suitcase. Overall a nice travel or every day mat.”

Also Great: A Small Knee Cushion For More Padding

ProsourceFit Yoga Knee Pad and Elbow Cushion

  • Material: NBR foam
  • Thickness: 15 millimeters
  • Dimensions: 10 x 24 inches
  • Weight: 0.4 pound

What makes it great: If you have sensitive joints, a knee and elbow pad could be a great addition to your on-the-go yoga setup since they’re small, light, and easy to bring along with your travel mat while still providing extra cushioning just where you need it. It’s not designed to roll or fold, but it’s made of a supportive foam, measures 15 millimeters thick, and comes in six colors.

One reviewer wrote: “I like a super-thin yoga mat, so I bought this for my knees and wrists for the extra support when I need it. It fits both of my mats widthwise. It’s pretty thick but not stiff and hasn't worn out in the several weeks I’ve been using it. It doesn’t slip at all no matter what pose or exercise I use it for, which is great. I feel safe, and it is supportive and just the right amount of squishy while still being very durable. I am very pleased with this purchase.”

Another Nice Add-On: A Microfiber Yoga Towel To Keep You In Place

Shandali GoSweat Non-Slip Hot Yoga Towel

  • Material: Microfiber
  • Thickness: Not specified
  • Dimensions: 26.5 x 72 inches (a hand towel measuring 16 x 2.5 inches is also available)
  • Weight: 0.7 pounds

What makes it great: A microfiber yoga towel can be really helpful for staying in place, especially if you’re practicing on a slippery PVC mat in a warm studio or outside on a hot day. One shopper described how portable it is: “It’s also very soft to the touch, rolls up into a very small and compact roll, and really doesnt weigh anything at all.” Some people even opt to use just a yoga towel as your travel mat if you want to, particularly on carpeted areas. This towel is available as a hand towel or a full-length mat towel, as well as six colors.

One reviewer wrote: “I got this for yoga in the summer in LA, when it can be difficult to stay stuck to your mat. This works great for keeping you stable but it's also super handy as a travel mat - I took it away with me for two months and did yoga on it every day, plus it doubles as a quick-dry towel in a pinch. Great space-saver and multi-purpose accessory!”

What to use as a yoga mat when travelling? A travel yoga mat is the best thing to use when travelling. With a wide range of both lightweight and foldable mats available, you can keep up with your practice even whilst on the road. Yoga travel mats are compact enough to fit in your luggage, but durable and sturdy to keep you supported during your yoga flow.

How to fold a travel yoga mat? Traditionally, yoga mats are rolled up. This can cause inconvenience when travelling, instead you could opt for a folding yoga mat which can be folded into a more compact shape. To do this, fold your mat in halves until you reach a size that will fit into your suitcase or bag, this works best with thinner mats.

How to clean a travel yoga mat? To clean a travel yoga mat, we recommend using a gentle cleansing spray and wiping down with a damp cloth. For tough stains you can use a soft and gentle brush in circular motions. Some yoga travel mats are more like mat towels, and can be placed into the washing machine on a gentle cycle. However, you should always check the care instructions of your mat before placing in the washing machine. Additionally, you should ensure that your mat is laid flat to dry before rolling it up, and store it out of direct sunlight.

Is a lightweight yoga mat best for travel? A lightweight mat is great for travelling. If space is not an issue, you may wish to choose a lightweight mat over a foldable mat, as they may offer further support. Many yoga practitioners prefer a lightweight yoga mat when travelling rather than a standard mat, as this allows the mat to be taken to outdoor locations more easily, such as the beach or forest. Lightweight mats can be more easily carried, and some are also foldable so can be tucked away in a backpack or tote bag for convenience.

What is better, a rubber or PVC yoga mat? Which material is best depends on both your personal preference and the type of yoga you practice. For example, PVC mats are more sticky and have a good grip but only when they are dry. For hot yoga, they would need to be supplemented with a yoga towel mat or replaced with a rubber or jute mat may be best. However, rubber mats are usually heavier than other types of material so if you are planning to transport your mat, you might wish to opt for a lighter material.

As a full-time travelling yoga teacher, I’ve had a lot of experience trying out travel yoga mats all around the world. In this guide I pick my favourites and help you choose the right travel yoga mat for your adventures.

Our Top Travel Yoga Mat Picks

While I travel the world teaching yoga , from Bali to Ho Chi Minh City , to Vancouver , to Norway, I often get asked for advice on choosing the best travel yoga mat.

During the last six years of travel, I’ve had a chance to try out almost all of the mats on this list and many more besides. So I feel completely comfortable using the word “best” to describe my favourite yoga mats.

For me, a good travel yoga mat should just work.

It needs to be sticky and sturdy, while also being easily packable and lightweight. It’s also important that my yoga mat is eco friendly, not full of crazy chemicals, and is made by a responsible company.

Currently, I carry the Liforme mat , which doesn’t fit in my carry-on suitcase but I do love practicing on it. Jane has had the Yogo travel yoga mat for about two years now. Both these mats are excellent choices, providing everything I look for in travel mat.

I also wrote a guide to the best eco-friendly yoga mats for your home practice , so don’t miss that if you’re looking for a more everyday mat.

Below, you’ll find answers to your questions about travel yoga mats, including whether you need to get one at all! Plus, I give you all the details and my honest opinions of the best mats on the market right now.

Keep reading to find the best mat for your next adventure.

Our 3 Favourite Travel Yoga Mats Stephen’s pick → Liforme Mat Jane’s pick → Yogo Travel Mat Best for hot yoga → Yoga Design Lab Travel Mat

The yoga mat that has earned pride of place in my travel essentials is the Liforme mat . Full disclosure: since we have been stationary for the past couple of years I actually have the regular mat, not the travel mat.

I love the Liforme mats. They are sticky, sweat absorbing, have extra grip in just the right spots, I actually use the alignment marks all the time, and it’s eco too.

For hot yoga fans, we recommend the Yoga Design Lab travel mat , which was made specifically to grip and slide as appropriate during hot vinyasa sessions. When you get sweaty, the Yoga Design Lab mat keeps on performing.

For a long time I travelled without a yoga mat, making my practice work on whatever flat surface I could find, be it the beach, a springy lawn, or a hard, cold marble floor.

Once I started carrying a mat, I noticed how much its mere presence encouraged me to practice. Now, when I roll out my mat (or even spot it in the corner of my hotel room), it sends a signal to my brain that it’s time to practice.

Having a mat prevents slipping and sliding across unfriendly surfaces and helps me feel a little cleaner than placing my hands, feet, and body all over the floor does.

Travel yoga mats are also thin enough that you can throw them over a borrowed mat in a studio, which is a nice homey touch when you’re far away from your home studio.

So, do you need a travel yoga mat?

Not necessarily, but I’ve found that having one makes practicing on the road easier and more pleasant.

( Don’t miss: Want to learn to pack like a pro? Check out our guide to perfect packing the minimalist way!)

An alternative to getting a travel mat is to just bring your everyday yoga mat from home. Of course, that is a perfectly fine thing to do! However, there are several reasons a travel mat might be the better option.

Easier to pack. I’m a firm believer in minimalist packing , which means that I fit all my travel gear in a single carry-on sized suitcase. My small, lightweight yoga mat goes in my suitcase too, which means I don’t have to keep track of an extra item on the plane, on busses, and when moving from hotel to hotel.

Less hassle at the airport. You can usually carry a rolled-up yoga mat onto the plane without it counting as an extra piece of luggage. Most flight crews understand that it’s not going to take up enough extra space to make an impact.

I say “usually” because, sometimes, if the airline you’re flying with has decided to be extra strict with their baggage policy, they might try to charge you extra for your yoga mat. Having a foldable yoga mat that hides away in your suitcase can make things go more smoothly at check-in.

Less hassle at immigration. When I used to carry a rolled-up yoga mat — especially when visiting places like Bali and the US — the immigration officers at the airport would often give me a hard time. They could see that I was carrying a yoga mat and thought it meant I was planning on teaching illegally in their country, even though I wasn’t.

Though they never stopped me from entering the country, there was that one time US immigration took me into secondary questioning for two hours! That extra stress on top of jet lag is pretty unpleasant. Now that I can pack my yoga mat away inside my suitcase, no more hassle!

stephen practicing without a mat in germany

The big disadvantage of a travel yoga mat is that there is not nearly as much padding as you get with a standard yoga mat.

If you have sensitive knees, elbows, or spine, practicing on a travel mat takes some getting used to. It might not be advisable at all, depending on what’s going on with your body.

However, for me, I have found that most of the discomfort from practicing on a thin yoga mat can be solved by improving my alignment — so practicing regularly on a thin mat has actually improved my body awareness when I practice!

Just be aware before you buy that a travel yoga mat is not like your thick, cushiony home mat . And remember that you can always cushion your knees with a towel or blanket to protect them.

1. Mat portability & durability

Most travel yoga mats are designed to be ultra-light and ultra-portable but this sometimes means sacrifices have to be made on durability. If you travel a lot, you’ll want to make sure to get a mat that is both portable and durable, so you don’t need to keep replacing your mat every few months.

2. Stickiness & mat comfort

Travel mats don’t tend to be that comfortable because an ultralight mat can’t be weighed down with padding. You can always use a folded towel or blanket to add cushioning as needed while you travel.

Of course, it’s also important that the mat surface feel nice to the touch and provides the appropriate level of stickiness for the type of yoga you practice.

3. Eco friendly materials and manufacturing

This should probably be point number 1! As yogis, we should always be conscious of the impact of the things we buy on the planet and the people around us. Yes, your practice is for yourself, but it should also be about how you engage with the world around you. Choosing an eco friendly yoga mat make a good foundation for this engagement!

4. Mindful manufacturing

Along with eco friendly practices, we look into how each manufacturer on this list gives back to local communities and the yoga world. If there’s a choice, we always want to support businesses who have social responsibility at the heart of what they do!

Best dual-purpose travel yoga mat Liforme Original Travel Mat , 1.6 kg (3.5 lb), 2 mm thick

green liforme yoga mat with alignment marks

While I think Liforme makes the best yoga mats for home practice, their travel mat is a little heavy for a frequent traveller like me. If you’re looking for a mat to use at home that you can also take on occasional trips, this one is a great choice.

Environmental impact

Before launching the Liforme yoga mat onto the world, Liforme did years of research into environmental best practices, putting together close partnerships with local manufacturers and creating one of the best, most environmentally conscious, and technologically advanced yoga mats on the market.

Liforme manufactures in a no-waste process, which I love. Plus, their raw materials are environmentally sourced and there is no PVC in sight. Their mats are made of natural rubber and eco-polyurethane that is biodegradable in normal landfills .

So if you want to start a new tradition (maybe host a ceremonial full-moon mat burial in your local park?) you’re good to go with this mat! But I jest.

Biodegradability is a serious issue as Liforme founder James Armitage explained to me:

“The main thing is the biodegradability of the mat and the issues with certain other mats. For me, this is the single biggest ‘ethical con’ out there. Those very heavy duty PVC materials, apart from being potentially harmful, take far too long to degrade when they end up (as they inevitably will) in landfills. Those materials can take thousands of years to degrade (and they’re not doing any good for the soil/earth during the process).”

If you’re priority is to get an eco friendly travel yoga mat, then Liforme is the mat to choose.

Portability and durability

Liforme’s Travel Mat is about the same size and weight as the Manduka eKO Lite – so it’s not quite as light and packable as I’d like. But if you’re not a full-time travelling yoga teacher like me, Liforme’s Travel Mat is great for commuting and less frequent travel.

In terms of durability, here’s what Armitage has to say:

“We are proud of how durable the material is, even though they are clearly not meant to last a lifetime. That should be a selling point, not the other way round. Once discarded, all the materials we use in our Liforme mat will degrade within a few years in normal soil conditions.”

Mat stickiness and comfort

I really love the texture of Liforme’s mats, which provides stability and comfort without being overly sticky like some mats. The etched laser markings that offer alignment guidance are a brilliant feature and I can imagine that they might transform your practice.

How they give back

In addition to their commitment to environmentalism in their production, Liforme also gives a part of its profits to Friends of the Earth, Yoga Gives Back, and the RSPCA.

Best mat for hot yoga adventures Yoga Design Lab Travel Yoga Mat , 0.8 kg (1.8 lb), 1 mm thick

yoga design lab blue geometric pattern mat

When Yoga Design Lab contacted us about their eco-friendly, foldable travel yoga mat, we were immediately drawn in by their story. Owner Chad started the company while on holiday in Bali, after seeing a sea of boring single-coloured mats at the Yoga Barn . He created his own line of mats, with a silky-soft texture and gorgeous prints, using recycled materials. The mats are also machine washable, so what’s not to love?

(Don’t miss: My guide to the best yoga in Ubud , Bali) →

Yoga Design Lab mats are made from two layers: one is natural tree rubber and the other is recycled plastic water bottles. In case you’re worried about practicing on plastic, rest assured that the bottles are completely sterilized before being turned into the colourful microfibre layer of the mats. The designs are created using eco-friendly water-based inks.

The Yoga Design Lab travel mat folds up small enough to fit easily into my suitcase. Plus, because of its two-layer construction, it seems to be a little tougher than the Manduka or Jade travel yoga mats made.

The Yoga Design Lab mats have been specifically designed to perform well in hot yoga classes – they stick better when wet. The soft absorbent surface takes the place of a yoga towel when you’re practicing hot vinyasa.

Tips for a Stickier Mat

Since Jane and I don’t really practice in hot studios, we sprinkle a little water at the top and foot of the mat before practice, which turns it from slick to sticky. We’ve also heard that after a few washes this mat gets much stickier. Jane will be folding this up and carrying it in her suitcase, so we’ll update you in a few months!

As far a comfort goes, the silky, fluffy texture of this mat is so different from most yoga mats, it makes just lying on it a pleasure. The mat is a little thicker than most travel mats but obviously won’t provide the cushioning of a non-travel mat.

Best mat for minimalist packers Yogo Travel Mat , 0.9 kg (2 lb), 1.5 mm thick

grey foldable yogo travel mat

When I asked my Facebook fans what travel mat they would recommend, the Yogo name kept popping up again and again. This thin yoga mat is the most packable yoga mat on the list and is the one Jane carries in her suitcase.

Since it’s designed specifically for travel, the Yogo travel mat folds up tiny and even has built-in straps to keep it folded. The straps can also be used to help hang it to dry after washing it in the shower.

As with all the best yoga mats, the Yogo Travel Mat is made with eco-friendly materials. The mats are made with natural tree rubber that is biodegradable and comes from renewable rubber plantations.

(Don’t miss: Our guide to the top eco retreats around the world) →

Portability & durability

Yogo makes much of the tiny proportions of their mat when folded, and it IS small. I do love the inclusion of the straps on the Yogo mat, to keep it compressed when it’s folded. As for durability, the company claims it can be used as a travel mat or an everyday mat — though we can’t back that up since we haven’t been using it every day.

Mat stickiness & comfort

The Yogo is most sticky when dry, and Yogo say that, “it will stay stickier than other mats in hot yoga up until a certain moisture level — then it is safer to use a yoga towel.” If you’re a hot yogi and you’re using a Yogo mat in class let us know how that’s going.

Comfort-wise, it is very similar to all the travel mats on this list, so don’t expect much cushioning!

The Yogo team partners with the NGO Trees for the Future , with whom they plant a food tree for every mat sold, and they work with impoverished rural communities to help them farm sustainably. The initiative helps support poor communities by creating a sustainable source of food, while also helping to protect and restore the environment.

Best mat if you need extra grip Manduka eKO SuperLite , 0.9 kg (2 lb), 1.5 mm thick Manduka eKO Lite , 2 kg (4.4 lb), 4 mm thick

green and blue travel yoga mats from manduka

Manduka offers two options for travel yoga. First is the eKO SuperLite, a super lightweight yoga mat. Then comes the eKO Lite, which is a little heavier, but adds more comfort. If you’re looking for a non-slip yoga mat, a Manduka mat might be the right choice.

Since I first wrote about yoga mats a few years ago, Manduka has made improvements in their production line as a result of inquiries by customers like me. They now have zero-waste production for many of their mats, including the eKO Lite.

Both the Lite and the eKO SuperLite are made from biodegradable natural tree rubber and no toxic chemicals are used in the manufacturing process.

The eKO SuperLite is totally foldable and will fit snugly into your suitcase or backpack. The eKO Lite is a bit thicker and heavier, so provides more padding but it is a slightly less portable yoga mat. Manduka mats are famously durable, but don’t expect a lifetime guarantee for their travel mats like you get with their PRO yoga mats.

I do love practicing on the eKO SuperLite travel yoga mat. Yes, it’s very thin and light but it provides really good grip on the floor and for your hands and feet. If you’re looking for a really sticky yoga mat, then a Manduka eKO yoga mat is probably the right choice.

There is no padding to speak of in their travel yoga mat, which means that you’ll feel very connected to the floor. On the other hand, if your knees or spine need extra padding, you won’t get it from this mat (or any travel yoga mat).

Bonus tip: I had two students using the eKO SuperLite at a workshop I was teaching in Hamburg and both of them turned their mat over to use the bottom as the top. They said they find the mat slides around on the floor if it’s the “right way” up. Good tip!

iIn the US, Manduka have a mat recycling program . When you buy a new Manduka mat you can send them your old mat, of any brand, to be recycled into new products by The Renewal Workshop.

lululemon Yoga Mats

When I first wrote this post, I recommended the lululemon travel mat — and in fact, I still love to practice on the (Un)Mat. It just feels good for my practice. However, I no longer recommend lululemon yoga mats because there are just so many preferable options out there. The (Un)Mat is too thick to be foldable and honestly, I’d rather support smaller companies who are focussed on yoga — especially those who prioritize environmental concerns and social responsibility.

Gaiam Yoga Mats

Since the Gaiam foldable yoga mat is a popular travel mat, I felt that I should explain why we decided not to recommend it in this post. This is because it is made from PVC.

We’re concerned about the already overwhelming plastic pollution problem on earth — and we think our yoga gear shouldn’t add to that! Gaiam does not provide any information about the eco-friendliness of their products on their website, leading us to believe that the environment is not a priority for them.

Wondering how to travel with a yoga mat? Welcome to our inside guide to help you find the perfect yoga mat to stay flexible on the road.

How to Travel with a Yoga Mat

Nothing beats the feeling of finishing work for the holidays and making your way to the airport to begin your well-deserved trip. Whether you’re travelling somewhere new or you’re heading to your favourite destination, going on holiday is the perfect way to relax and unwind.

However, travel can take a physical toll on the body. From lugging a heavy suitcase around the airport to sitting cooped up on the plane for hours, a lot of travellers choose to travel with their yoga mats so they can recuperate physically as well as mentally.

But if you’re wondering how to travel with a yoga mat, then this article is for you. We will be sharing everything you need to know about travelling with a yoga mat so you can get the most out of your holiday, while still taking good care of your body.

If you book or buy through any of the links on this page, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Cheers for that!

THE BENEFITS OF TRAVELLING WITH A YOGA MAT

Going on holiday is always an exciting time. The chance to explore new places, try new cuisines, experience different cultures, and get away from life’s normal routines. However, with this can come a more sedentary way of life where you sit down more and eat bigger meals than you normally would. To get the most out of your holiday, it’s important to add a yoga mat to your packing list so that you can enjoy the following benefits:

Stay Fit and Flexible: Practising yoga while travelling is a great way to counteract those hours spent lazing on the beach and the extra calories you will inevitably consume. If you want to stay fit and flexible, taking your yoga mat with you on vacation lets you maintain your exercise regime while you’re away so that you’re not playing catch-up on your return.

Mindfulness: going on vacation is the perfect excuse to unwind and relax. Practising yoga whilst on holiday helps speed up the process of relaxation by promoting mindfulness. According to the Centers for Health and Wellbeing , “Practising mindfulness allows individuals to slow down and notice how their thoughts drive their emotions and behaviours, and to observe the many ways that they can get caught up in distraction, rumination and resistance – often running on ‘automatic pilot’.” Practising yoga while on holiday helps you unwind fully so that you can be present and enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

Stretch Your Body: as we’ve already mentioned, going on holiday is an exciting time. However, it can mean you spend hours dragging your luggage around the airport or cooped up on planes or in taxis. As a result, practising yoga can help stretch your muscles when needed most, helping promote a faster recovery.

Reduce the Effects of Jet Lag: nobody likes experiencing jet lag after a long flight. Jet lag can negatively affect your sleep; often, it can feel like the first few days of your vacation are spent recovering from the journey. And it shouldn’t need to be that way. Practising yoga is a great way to get ahead of jet lag and reduce its effects. You will feel refreshed sooner, enjoy better sleep, and have increased energy levels sooner than you expect. What’s not to like about that?

Rolling up a yoga travel mat

How to travel with a yoga mat

So, now that you know the benefits of practising yoga while travelling. how could you not get excited about taking your yoga mat with you on your next trip? The great thing is that travelling with a yoga mat is easier than you might think! Below we share some of the best tips for how to travel with a yoga mat.

Carry your yoga mat separately

Whether you choose to strap your yoga mat to your luggage or tuck it under your arm, learning how to carry your yoga mat properly can make for a smooth journey. If you’re adventuring quite a long way, it can be helpful to invest in luggage that has straps on the outside. This way, you can strap your yoga mat to your backpack and set off without a second thought. Or, if your backpacking days are behind you, look into buying a dedicated yoga travel mat bag to make this easier. Here’s an example of a yoga bag on Amazon.

Protect your yoga mat

Of course, the downside of strapping your yoga mat to the outside of your luggage does make it most susceptible to dirt and grime. Consider how often you have to take your backpack off and rest it on the floor or put it on the conveyor belt to be loaded onto the plane.

There is a lot of dirt your yoga mat could be exposed to while you’re travelling which is why it’s so important to protect your yoga mat with a bag or case. This will ensure your yoga mat is protected while travelling from place to place so that it’s clean and ready to use when you arrive.

Can you carry a yoga mat in carry on?

Unfortunately, the vast majority of airlines will not let you take your regular mat as carry on to store in the overhead locker. Instead, you must check it into your suitcase. Alternatively, if you travel often, you could look into buying a travel yoga mat. These thin mats will still protect your knees from the hard floor and give you a good grip but they fold up small and can fit in your carry-on luggage. But regular yoga mats are not allowed on board most flights as hand luggage.

The best Travel Yoga Mats

If you want to make travelling with a yoga mat as easy as possible, you may want to consider investing in a lightweight yoga mat. What makes travelling with a yoga mat difficult is how heavy and bulky they can be. Carrying so much extra weight can cause unnecessary strain on your muscles and increase your baggage weight limit, while making your journey more tiring overall.

With a travel yoga mat, you get a foldable yoga mat with excellent grip which is perfect for beginners and yoga instructors alike.

According to yoga teachers, the best yoga mats for road trips and beyond are:

The YOGO Ultralight Travel Mat

Smooth and grippy, like the manduka mats, these travel yoga mats are made from renewable tree rubber and come with their own handle. The folding system protects you from picking up germs from the hotel floor during your yoga practice (or yoga studio if you visit a local studio while on the road.)

MANDUKA EKO SUPERLITE TRAVEL MAT

Often regarded as the premium brand of yoga mats, the Manduka EKO Superlite Travel Mat folds up to about the size of a pair of jeans. Some people have reported that it feels a bit thin, so if your knees struggle on a thinner mat then reach for a hand towel to help tolerate certain poses. Also, on first use, you may smell the rubber materials but this feature fades over time.

Mikkoa Travel Mat

This yoga travel mat folds up wrinkle free and is slightly longer than a standard mat. Great for stretching out on the hotel room floor! It has a sticky grip which is perfect for those downward dogs or a hot yoga class.

Jade Voyager Fold Up Yoga Mat

A Jade travel mat has been a favourite for a long time. Jade mats last a long time and you can throw them into the washing machine. The Jade yoga travel mat is another one of those natural rubber mats that is a good choice if you travel a lot.

Choosing a lightweight yoga mat can make your journey easier and more convenient. Whether you choose to pack your yoga mat into your suitcase, your hand luggage, or strapped to your luggage, a lighter weight mat will make everything easier.

Unroll your mat when you arrive

As soon as you arrive at your holiday destination, it is important to unroll your yoga mat to avoid wrinkles, creases, and deterioration. Unrolling your mat upon arrival will help prevent your mat from damage and will mean you’re more likely to do some basic stretches to unwind and relax after a busy day of travel.

Think about a yoga towel

A yoga towel provides great grip, is lightweight and folds up easily. Yoga studios recommend that they are combined with traditional yoga mats to be most effective. It’s worth thinking about one if you’re planning to travel somewhere hot and sticky as you’re more likely to slip.

The Yogi Review: Travel Yoga Mats Compared

by Outside Expert, Sara Quiriconi

The Yogi Review: Travel Yoga Mats Compared

It was a trip to Miami (before I decided to move there) that made me a believer in having a travel mat in my yoga gear arsenal. I packed my regular  Jade Harmony  Yoga Mat for a yoga retreat and slung it over my shoulder like a “travel pro” - or so I thought. When I checked in at the airport, I learned that the mat over my shoulder actually counted as a carry-on item. I attempted to cram that mat into my already stuffed suitcase, which caused my luggage to be overweight. This ended up being a costly lesson learned!

Flash forward to these days, I travel a lot producing content, filming, and leading events around the world. Something that I always bring with me is my yoga practice so that I can stay mentally and physically balanced wherever I go. With that being said, I now have a lot of experience with different yoga mats that are designed for travel so as to avoid the above “newbie” issue that previously I ran into.

So, what should one look for when deciding on a  travel yoga mat? As you'll see in this guide, I like to focus on a few key categories to base this decision off of, including: pack-ability, functionality, weight, and price.

Everyday Yoga Travel Yoga Mat ($7.98)

This is the no-frills, gets the job done, toss in a bag, and let's flow anywhere kind of mat! It folds down nicely and takes up the least amount of space in comparison to the other mats in this review.

Everyday Yoga Travel Yoga Mat ($7.98)

As I mentioned, this mat is good for kicking around as needed. It's ideal for someone who doesn't care too much about the technicalities of a mat, doesn't travel all too often, or prefers to keep it simple when it comes to a travel mat.

Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat ($19.95)

This travel yoga mat is sticky, indeed. This is a great function in the long run, but this mat will require a little breaking in at first.

Gaiam Foldable Yoga Mat ($19.95)

If you're curious as to how well this yoga mat packs up, the answer is right in its title: it's foldable! It fits easily into a bag, like a large notebook. It even has little squares that act as a fold-up guide, just like a mini packet guide map. If you're a beginner, this would be a good mat for you, as you can use the folding lines as a guide for your alignment as well!

Halfmoon Travel Yoga Mat ($25.99)

This travel yoga mat is rolled up when new, but don't be fooled! It can also be folded down into a compact 8” x 12” rectangle to fit into small spaces.

Halfmoon Travel Yoga Mat ($25.99)

It has a good thickness for traveling and is ideal for use in a hotel room or at the gym. This mat is nice and sticky, so you can rest assured that you won't slip when you start to sweat. It will work well for all types of yoga.

Hugger Mugger Tapas Travel Yoga Mat ($17.95)

While the package claims that this yoga mat can be folded as well as rolled, I would recommend unfolding it as soon as you arrive at your destination in order to prevent fold marks.

Hugger Mugger Tapas Travel Yoga Mat ($17.95)

The surface of this mat is textured and grippy. It was a good companion for my morning flow practice with no heat or sweat.

It's a good price for a mat to toss into your luggage for both indoor and outdoor use.

Jade Yoga Travel Natural Rubber Yoga Mat ($59.95)

In comparison to its big brother, the Jade Harmony Yoga Mat , this travel mat has the exact same texture, but is a bit smaller. Although it's half the size of a regular Jade mat, I wouldn't recommend folding this one. Rather, stick to rolling it up to fit into a checked bag or larger, longer carry-on.

This yoga mat has a grippy texture and I didn't slip when using it. While it's not the lightest in the bunch, if you plan to practice on a hard surface, this mat will pad your knees and back nicely.

Manduka eKO SuperLite Travel Yoga Mat ($42.00)

This travel yoga mat folds up nicely. It's light and compact enough to store seamlessly in carry-on or personal bags. At the same time, it functions just like my larger Manduka mat. For these reasons, this is my personal favorite travel yoga mat.

This mat is ideal for practicing on a carpet, being placed over another mat in a studio, or for your wake-up flow to get energized for the day ahead!

Yoga Design Lab Geo Blue Travel Yoga Mat ($49.00)

It doesn't technically say on the package of this mat that you can fold it, but I don't see why not! The bonus with this yoga mat is that it comes with a carrying strap to tote it around when traveling.

Yoga Design Lab Geo Blue Travel Yoga Mat ($49.00)

This mat has a soft microfiber* top layer that gets grippier as you perspire, so it's ideal for hot yoga.

* Here's a good tip when it comes to yoga mats with microfiber: lightly spraying the surface with water prior to practicing will help prevent sliding when you're getting warmed up.

Conclusion There's no shortage of travel yoga mat options out there! To narrow down your choices, it's important to get clear on your needs as well as how much you're willing to invest. Personally, I travel a lot, and know that there's nothing worse than having a mat or yoga gear that under performs when miles away from home. So, do your homework, meditate on what you need, and choose based on what works for you, frequent flyer!

The ancient art of yoga has endured since its origins in India approximately 5,000 years ago, becoming a widely taught and practised activity in contemporary society and wellness-orientated groups to this day.

With its three main tenets focusing on breathing, flexibility and strength, the movement elicited by yogic practices simultaneously allows us to pause and reflect, while flowing through core-engaging movements assisted by the power of our own breath. In teaching us to harness the power of our body’s natural movements and the basic functions which help us to survive, students of yoga learn to be at one with the natural world.

Yoga provides a firm, solid foothold to help boost us into a wellness-focused life, which prioritises mental health and positive movement above all else – it just takes a little bit of practice. Yet despite yoga’s unwavering popularity over the centuries, many beginners find that the activity is often at odds with their modern, fast-paced life.

Rather than waking up extra early to get a sun salutation in, it suits the vast majority of 9-to-5ers far more to run to the office instead. Similarly, many office-dwellers would prefer to take a speedy 20-minute gym break during lunch, during which they’ll likely burn far more calories than they would in a 90-minute yoga class.

However, attempting to turn yoga into a means to lose weight or putting your physical endurance to the test is missing the point entirely. Yoga is all about intuitive movement, so much so that flows and salutations can be learned and rehearsed like dance routines, so they’ll come as naturally as breathing.

As such, you don’t need a studio or instructor to flow while you’re away from home. After a few classes and a little bit of practice, you’ll feel mightily confident on your own – and if you’re still not quite there, you can of course pop on a gentle guiding YouTube video from one of your favourite online instructors (ours is Adrienne, of course).

Whether you’re camping, hiking, travelling or enjoying a relaxing beach holiday, you’ll be surprised by how incomplete your day starts to feel without even a few minutes of stretching, breathing and movement. When you’re on the move, it’s therefore always a brilliant idea to take a portable, travel yoga mat with you.

We’ve rounded up a selection of the best travel yoga mats to help elevate your practice even when you’re not on home soil.

If you’re a yogi who struggles to pack light, you’ll know what it’s like to lug a mat on the underground, or try and squeeze a yoga towel into your hand luggage.

To make life easier (and lighter), we’ve hand picked the best yoga kit on the market for travelling, whether you’re planning on taking your practice to the local park or jetting off to the Bahamas.

  • Get the best: Find the perfect yoga mat for any type of yogi

How to pick a travel yoga mat

A yoga mat is the item you’ll probably end up carrying most, so why not invest in one that makes transporting it easier? With plenty of travel yoga mats on the market though, it can be hard to find one that compares to your trusty mat at home. Here’s what to look for when selecting a travel yoga mat:

Weight: Travel yoga mats are designed to be lightweight, but even the best mats will vary in weight. If you’re a smaller yogi, or going long-haul, be sure to check this.

Size: A lot of travel yoga mats will be thinner and shorter than a normal yoga mat. This shouldn’t be a problem, but if you’re a particularly tall yogi, it might be worth measuring your mat at home first.

Practicality: If you’re a dedicated yogi, you’ve probably already invested in a mat that is comfortable, doesn’t slip and isn’t too sticky, so starting again can be daunting. Most travel yoga mats will, naturally, be a lot thinner than your home mat, so it might be worth investing in a yoga towel too.

Ease of carrying: Another important thing to think about is how you’d prefer to carry your mat. Does your yoga bag have a strap to fix the mat onto, or would you prefer to be able to fold the mat into your bag? There are plenty of different options, but have a think about which would work best for you before investing.

The best for travelling to hot countries

Manduka eko superlite travel mat.

The best yoga kit for travelling

Manduka is famous for its yoga mats and it’s not hard to see why. The mats are designed by yogis and used in over 4,000 yoga studios worldwide, so definitely have the seal-pose of approval. Its eKO SuperLite Travel Mat is a great travel companion – weighing just 2lbs, it’s around 1.5mm thick, making it exceptionally light. At only 68 inches long, you’ll be able to fold it away in your bag with ease.

Made from non-Amazon harvested, natural tree rubber, the mat is sticky even when wet, so despite being thin, you won’t be slipping in downward dog. The closed-cell design means it won’t absorb bacteria, even if you don’t have time to wipe it down before folding it away. It’s also available in a range of colours to suit every style of yogi. The only downside? 1.5mm might be a little too thin for some yogis.

The best for limited space

Yogo ultralight travel yoga mat.

The best yoga kit for travelling

When it comes to portability, the YOGO Ultralight Travel Yoga Mat ticks all the boxes. The attached straps let you fold and fasten the mat up small and pop it, or clip it to your bag with ease. Weighing in at just 2.1lbs, the mat is 1.5mm thick, making it super lightweight. And the origami-style folding means the bottom of the mat isn’t touching the top, making it more hygienic.

Although it’s super thin, it feels supportive and is sticky enough to keep your hands in place, whether you’re practising in a hot studio or on the beach. The attached straps make cleaning the mat easier, as you can hang out to dry on the washing line, or from the shower if you’re travelling. A great buy, the makers of this impressive little mat also plant a tree in Africa for every mat sold.

A good all-rounder

Lululemon the reversible (un) mat.

Not only does Lululemon make the most comfortable yoga pants on the planet, it designs mats and props too. This reversible mat is made to be portable and at just 1.5mm thick and weighing 2.32lbs, it’s as lightweight as the Manduka mat. Each side has a slightly different texture – the top is made of a natural rubber that gives you cushioning and grip in a class that isn’t too sweaty. The other side has more texture to improve your grip in warmer, sweatier classes without the need for a towel.

Made from polyurethane and natural rubber, the mat has an antimicrobial additive to help prevent mould and mildew growing on the mat. The mat can be folded and carried with a strap, or folded into a bag. Again, the only downside here is that it might be a little too thin to be comfortable for some yogis.

The best for eco-conscious yogis

Yogamatters eco travel yoga mat.

Best yoga travel mats and towels for your summer escape

This Yogamatters mat has been designed with the environment in mind. Made from sustainably harvested natural tree rubber and free from toxic chemicals and dyes, you can unfold your mat with the knowledge you’re looking after the earth.

The mat itself ticks pretty much all of the travel boxes – it’s extremely lightweight, weighing just 750g and at just 1mm thick, it’s easy to fold away into your backpack. The non-slip rubber surface is grippy enough to prevent slipping, but you might want to use a yoga towel if you’re travelling anywhere too hot. Plus it’s available in a number of great colours.

The only downsides here are, like other mats this thin, it might not be as comfortable on the joints as your usual mat and that the colours of the mat might fade over time due to the lack of chemical dyes. It’s also worth noting the mat has a very plasticky smell when new, but this does fade.

The best for those looking for comfort

Jade yoga travel mat.

Best yoga travel mats and towels for your summer escape

Another brand that stands out from the rolls of yoga mats on the market is Jade Yoga. Its travel option is thicker and heavier than the Manduka, weighing 3.3lbs and 3mm thick, but this makes it much comfier. It’s also more expensive than a lot of the other travel yoga mats on the market, but if you’re heading to a retreat, or practising a lot, this will feel more like your mat at home.

Made sustainably with natural rubber tapped from rubber trees, Jade Yoga makes its products with the environment in mind, planting a tree for every mat sold. Although it can be folded, it’s pretty thick, so it’s easier to roll it up.

Available in a number of different bright colours, for every kind of yogi. If you’re worried about the extra weight, Jade Yoga have also made a thinner version of this travel mat, the Jade Voyager, that is lighter and more portable.

The best travel yoga towels

If you are practising on a thinner mat, a yoga towel can help make things more comfortable, as well as helping to keep things from getting too slippery as you sweat. When you’re on the move, a thin, light towel is essential, but unlike the travel towel you might find in a camping shop, a yoga towel will usually be grippy on one side to prevent it bunching up under your feet as you move into warrior three.

The best all-round towel

Yogitoes yoga towel.

The best yoga kit for travelling

With great absorption thanks to the silicone nubs on the bottom, this Yogitoes towel does not slip, no matter how sweaty your hot yoga class might get. Available in a number of different prints, for every style of yogi, this mat is big enough to be comfortable when practising, but small enough to fit into your bag.

Hygienic and absorbent, the towel itself is made from eight recycled plastic water bottles. The towel can be put in the washing machine and used dry or slightly damp to prevent hands and feet slipping.

The best for hot yoga

Yoga design lab the hot yoga towel.

The best yoga kit for travelling

A company thought up when practising in Bali, the Yoga Design Lab has a range of eco-friendly, eye-catching yoga mats and towels. The Hot Yoga Towel is a good choice if you’re traveling somewhere warm, as it can be rolled up pretty small and chucked in your hand luggage.

The mat-size towel dries quickly, doesn’t slip and can be put in the washing machine. The bright colours are treated so they won’t fade in the wash, and it adds a nice layer of cushioning if you’re traveling with a thinner mat.

The best travel yoga props and carriers

Yogamatters yoga mat strap.

The best yoga kit for travelling

A simple, affordable option when it comes to carrying your mat, this Yoga Mat Strap doubles up as a yoga belt for when you’re on the move. The adjustable loops mean this strap can fit any kind of yoga mat rolled up. A yoga strap can also be helpful during practice when it comes to support and alignment in certain postures, no matter what level of yogi you are.

In seated postures, a yoga strap can be especially beneficial when it comes to holding a deeper stretch. Made from cotton, this strap is available in a number of different colours to match your mat.

Yogamatters Pocket-Sized Cork Wedge

The best yoga kit for travelling

A miniature version of a traditional yoga block, if you regularly use one in your practice, this pocket-sized wedge is perfect for travelling. Made from cork, the lightweight block weighs less than 1lb.

Traditionally used in yoga classes to prevent hyperextension, yoga blocks can help beginners to find their way into poses when their flexibility isn’t quite there. This non-slip yoga block will not distort under bodyweight and has rounded edges for comfort.

Sweaty Betty All Sport Backpack

The best yoga kit for travelling

If you’re looking for a practical way to carry your yoga mat with you, this Sweaty Betty backpack has in-built straps for your mat to save you carrying a separate bag. The lightweight scuba-style fabric means you won’t be weighing yourself down and the adjustable straps protect your spine.

The bag itself has six pockets (two on the outside, three inside) to help organise the most disorganised yogi. It’s big enough to take away for a weekend retreat, but light enough to carry on your commute to your after-work yoga class. It’s available in black and grey, but if this isn’t quite enough for your lifestyle, Sweaty Betty also do a larger tote bag that has the same handy straps to fix your yoga mat to.

The best travel yoga accessories

Manduka mat wash travel spray.

Best travel yoga mats and towels: Light, compact and eco-friendly

When you’ve spent loads of money on your dream trip to some far-flung paradise across the globe, spending a bit of extra cash to make sure your mat stays fresh and clean for the whole trip is well worth the investment.

This mini mat wash from Manduka is small enough to stick in your hand luggage and means that you can keep your yoga mat clean and fragrant, regardless of how sweaty your sessions get. Just spray it a few times and leave it to soak for five minutes. Then, using a damp cloth, scrub the surface and leave to air dry.

It also comes in five fragrances and is made from both a biodegradable formula and organic essential oils. Make sure you check the individual bottle to see the type of mat it’s designed for as the different options are best used with specific mat fabrics.

Nabaiji Small Microfibre Towel

Best travel yoga mats and towels: Light, compact and eco-friendly

If you’re heading away for a yoga retreat then the chances are it’s going to be somewhere warm. Instead of lugging around a full-size towel to wipe the sweat off, pick up one of these mini microfibre towels. Not only will it fit in any sized bag you might be carrying but it’s made from an impressively soft material that dries within minutes.

A little fabric loop means you can fold it up and keep it secure while the range of color options means that you can match it with whatever style you’re going for on your trip. Not bad considering it’s the same price as a glass of wine.

What can I use as a yoga mat while traveling?

If you don’t have a yoga mat on hand while traveling, there are a few household items you can use in a pinch. A beach towel, sarong, or even a shawl can work as a mat if you need one. If you’re in a hotel room, lay down a bathmat or towels to create a makeshift yoga space.

And if you’re really in a bind, you can always use the floor! Just be sure to practice caution and avoid slippery surfaces.

Is a 3mm yoga mat too thin?

Yoga mats typically vary in thickness, ranging from 1 – 7 mm. Falling in that range, a three-millimeter yoga mat is not too thin. In fact, it’s a great thickness for travel mats because it’s usually a lightweight mat and easy to pack. However, if you’re looking for a mat to use for everyday practice, you may want something thicker for cushioning and support.

Traveling can be tough on the body and mind. Long hours of sitting, followed by rushed walks through unfamiliar airports can leave you feeling tense and out of sorts .

A regular yoga practice can help to offset the negative effects of travel , but it can be hard to find the time and space to unroll a mat.

That’s where travel yoga mats come in. These mats are designed to be lightweight and portable, so you can practice yoga anywhere, anytime.

So if you’re looking for a mat to help you stay healthy and balanced while you travel the world , check out our list of the best travel yoga mats of 2022. From eco-friendly options to mats with built-in towels, there’s a mat for every yogi.

Namaste friends ! And happy traveling.

Yogis react.

I am so happy that I purchased this mat for travel! It’s lightweight, compact, perfectly sticky, and has a natural feel keeping me connected to the Earth as I practice Yoga in new locations. Thank you Yogo for providing this quality mat to help keep my Yoga practice going with love and ease wherever I am!

Great travel mat! Sticky, grippy mat that is perfect. Truly portable and folds into sling nicely, I bought the large mat and still small enough to put into my luggage.

I like the size and grip of the mat. Perfect for travel.

Amazing compact size! Im excited to use my mat while traveling. Thanks!!

The Ultralight Folding Yoga Mat is fantastic. I wish I had found it sooner. The grip is better than any other mat I have used. It folds up compactly for travel with attached straps/handle. I especially like that it folds back on itself so the downward surface only touches itself, not the top of the mat or inside of my luggage. If you need a light mat for home or travel, do not hesitate - this mat is great!

this is so cute and easily fit in my suitcase. I am hoping to take to Europe in a 19Inch suitcase. It is easy to fold up and clip together. I currently have in my bedroom for any quick yoga at 0300 and travel plan to buy for friend.

As I travel frequently for work I’ve become a minimalist packer. Having the portable and lightweight Yogo mat has been a game changer! In addition of being extremely compact, the Yogo mat sustains a sticky grip both on top and underside of the mat. The mat on the hotel carpet offsets the thin mat and provides a bit of cushioning. Cleaning the mat is a breeze thanks to the hang up straps. I don’t know how I survived this long without the mat! Do not hesitate to purchase, especially if you are a frequent traveller and want a very portable mat.

So excited to have a mat that is easy to travel with and love how the clean side only touches the clean side! Grippy and awesome...

Did lots of research online about travel yoga mats & this one was highlighted as a great one on many of them. I was a bit apprehensive to order as couldn’t seem to order from uk supplier, but I needn’t be worried- fast & efficient deliver from USA (no additional taxes required). Love love love that mat- looks cool, folds up very small & great grip. Everything I wanted & absolutely delighted!

This yoga mat is so easy to travel with! I love that it is made with sustainable materials. It is thin, but it needs to be in order to travel with it. I love that it comes with its own carrying straps. Well made, and you can tell the company really cares. Highly recommend.

This mat is great, I tried it at a retreat center for an entire weekend, it's the perfect size and I got the slightly bigger one. The grip is good, I like that the floor side never has to touch the top side. I quickly got the hang of folding it back up. The attached straps did not get in the way, I thought they might but they didn't. I also got an excellent deal because I bought one with a "damaged box". I have to say the box was barely dinged, but it shows that Yogo cares about offering a quality product. I look forward to taking this mat on some real outdoor adventures next week.

This mat is incredible. It’s small and sticky. And I have super sweaty palms. I’m so grateful to have found Yogo! Thanks for a wonderful product ❤️

The material is amazing the mat is super “grippy” and I love it. I bought it to take on trips with me and I’ve been using it almost every time I practice lol MUST HAVE

It is super lite but so comfortable and not slippery like most of my other mats.

I have tried several different brand yoga mats in past years, and this is the best. My feet stayed firm and grounded through the whole class. I love the glossy sheen on top of the mat. I even like the way it smells. I placed the Yogo mat on top of a thick mat for cushioning and I couldn’t be more pleased. I am excited to try it in sweaty conditions, and it will be great for travel!!
